The Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and the Seraphites have been at war since 2029. Both wanting control over Seattle ever since the Federal Disaster Relief Agency (FEDRA) was taken down. So what happens in 2035 when a Seraphite saves a WLF? Will these two overcome the hatred between the two groups?

Kaiden was born a year before the world fell apart. He remembered nothing of the world, nothing aside from his parents. His father joined FEDRA when the world ended, and his mother hated him for it. She didn’t like the fact that he was working for an agency that was killing and caging people. But for the first eleven years of his life he was in this apartment building with other families. What made the days pass was the support group started by two men who became father figures to Kaiden. Jacob and Hayden. He enjoyed spending time with Soren although Joshua scared him a little bit at first. When they all moved to the WLF, Kaiden and his mother followed them and left his father behind. His mother was killed in a protest against FEDRA and Kaiden was fifteen. They were close to beating FEDRA and Kaiden was in training to fight when she died.

Kaiden’s father was one of the men who had been part of the fight. And when Kaiden reached sixteen, he was part of the final battle. And he got vengeance on his mother by killing his father. And then the WLF had a lot of control over the city. They moved into the stadium and the war with the Seraphites started. Kaiden, like every other WLF had grown to hate the Seraphites or Scars, and the Scars hated them. They had conflicts, truces and battles. All fighting for control of the city. Kaiden had lost several friends to battles with them. And now, it was 2035, two years had passed since they’d killed the Scar prophet.

Kaiden was a patrol guard, and he had been separated from his group. He was currently trapped by a group of infected, stuck in a small store near the hospital. Close to Scar territory. He was currently crouched behind a counter, checking how many bullets he had and his heart dropped because he didn’t have enough for the amount of infected around him. They were everywhere. Mostly runners and a few clickers. Kaiden moved to the door and stepped onto the street and looked around. A screech sounded and his eyes widened. The runner alerted the others and his face paled. Kaiden turned and took off but he wasn’t going to be able to outrun all the infected. Then pain as he tripped, landing on his knees and he flipped over, aiming his gun. He got one shot off before his gun jammed and he swallowed hard as the infected drew closer.

Daylight touched the eyes of imperfection, and Ezekiel counted it as a blessing that his humanity was still intact. He and six other warriors broke through the trees and silently into the old world of crumbling buildings and plague. As they moved to their destination, his eyes closed, and he pictured Her face as she smiled on them. ‘May she guide you,’ he repeated in his mind. Rebekah touched his shoulder as she did before speaking to each of them. She was a kind and gentle old soul. Sometimes, when she smiled, he reminded her of their Prophet. He missed her presence. Earth did not sing as jovially as once it did after her passing.

A whistle brought his attention back to the present. They were nearing a building that they would cut through in their return home from their long reconnaissance. This war had gone on far too long, and if they could find something that would turn the tides, the elders would be most pleased with them. If they took out some of their enemies at the same time, then all the better. He and the six others slipped into the building without much thought. It was so close to the den of wolves that were not expecting company.

The first to fall was Harlen. Then Marina and Leif. Demons. They were infested with sin. With a bow, Janna shot down one. Another. A third. With a hammer, he bludgeoned one. Two. A third and fourth. Rick, not wanting to use gunfire to draw more, tried to fight them off with various objects around, but he was easily overtaken. That left only Ezekiel and Janna. This was not how he planned for this day to go. When he woke up that morning in one of their camps around the infested city, thanked the Prophet for her endless wisdom, thanked the earth and the world for sparing him each day, he assumed that they would prevail as they always did. Not today. It was not destined. As each of his group fell, he made sure none could turn into one of those demons.

Then he was alone. Or so he thought. As he rammed his hammer into one demon after the next, he heard the sounds of gun fire. Who was close? None of his group survived. Did a group come to their aid when they were gone for so long. He would have to explain to them and the elders why they were delayed. It would not be an entertaining conversation. He slipped beneath one demon and ran as fast as he could into the main room where his eyes grew wide with the realization that there were so many. Too many perhaps. No, never too many. He was a survivor. With the love of his Prophet, all could prevail in the end. He dashed to the other end of the store, kicking an old bottle on the way. All of them came running to that spot, leaving behind whoever it was that came to help. He threw his hammer forward, knocking out a window, leapt out, and threw the Molotov cocktail. Flames erupted. He did not take the time to watch. He picked up his weapon and ran to the other side of the store, a side with an already broken window and jumped back in to find his aid. Not all of the demons were burning, but many were. He could hope that was enough.

Kaiden heard a bottle, and turned his head. Had his patrol found him? Then fire exploded near the store. It drew the attention of the infected and Kaiden scrambled to his feet. The fire had drawn the attention of enough of them for him to grab his shotgun from his pack. He fired at a clicker headed towards him. Then his eyes drew to who had thrown the Molotov jumping in through the broken window. A scar. Kaiden was confused and angry. How dare a scar show up and go after the infected. Kaiden narrowed his eyes as he looked at him. “Why did you do this scar?” He asked, his voice hard and rough as he flicked his head to the several burning infected. Then without any other words, he jumped through the window and onto the street. He turned around to look at the scar, and it was about that time when a runner slammed into his sides sending them both to the ground. Kaiden couldn’t get his gun up, and instead was using it to keep the runners mouth away from his skin.

A wolf? Of course. Wolves were rampant in the territory that the Seraphites had yet to claim. With brown robes swishing behind him, he ran quickly behind some of the shelves of this strange old world building. He did not want to be in the line of fire of an angry monster such as the one he accidentally saved. Scar. The word stung in his mind, bringing back memories of the many times someone called him that. Many, many times. Yes, there were scars on his face. No, they were not what defined him. He was more than that as they all were. To a simple mind such as this, he should not be surprised that one could not see passed this.

His momentary distraction was enough to allow a quick demon to find his location. He kicked it back, thankful for the heavy boots warriors wore, and swung the hammer again. The runner dropped and so did his hammer. That crack was too much for the older weapon, and the handle snapped. He twisted around and ran the other direction. Why do you do this? Why did he do this? Do what? Save the wolf? He did not mean to. Alleviate himself of the demons? Because they spurned the earth. He slipped out of old building and onto the street. He needed to get back to the island and tell the elders of what happened. They would be saddened to hear the news. As he turned to run back, he glimpsed the wolf with one of the fast demons on him. For a moment, he considered letting the demon have his way with him, but that would be wrong. Even the wolves had their humanity still. That must mean that they were better than the plague that walked. Lifting up Janna’s bow that he pried from her dead hands, he shot the demon, hitting his arm, kicked it off of the man on the ground, and shot once more. This one hit the flailing monster’s head before it stilled. Ezekiel turned his attention to the wolf. Why do you do this? He aimed the bow at the man’s face now. He did not have an answer.

Kaiden saw his life flash before him. From his young life in the apartment building with his mom and men who became his family, to joining the WLF and killing the people who caused such destruction to civilians who were trying to live in a scary new world. He heard the runner’s teeth gnashing near his face and neck. This was not how Kaiden saw his life ending. And then the sound of an arrow, the runner was then kicked off him and killed by the other man. The scar. Kaiden’s eyes were wide as he looked up at the bow aimed at his face. “Go ahead. Kill me.” Kaiden told him, he wasn’t afraid of death, at least then he could see his mother again. He was afraid of being infected and wandering the countryside like that. Kaiden didn’t move, his brown eyes watching the brown robed scar. His pack dug into his back, making him clench his teeth as he laid there. Kaiden could go for his gun but he’d probably be dead before he drew it. “What are you waiting for? Several of your people have killed us instantly. Why aren’t you?”

The screeches of demons began to die away as the fire ended its course. Ezekiel would guess that there were a handful left in there. No matter. What he needed to deal with now was the wolf at his mercy. Mercy. This was a mercy. He would not drag him back to be strung up and cut. He did not wish to watch his organs fall out. Perhaps that was the way, but it was not his. He never liked watching. During those rituals, he always found himself elsewhere. He would end this now. Why aren’t you? Was there a reason he waited so long? His aim wavered. This was not his weapon of choice. Janna was so much better at it than he. It was all that he had now.

A piercing scream broke through his thoughts. His head whipped around and he held his breath as the rest of the demons came barreling out of the old building. He did not think. He turned back around, bent down, and yanked the man up onto his feet before twisting around once more and firing off several arrows. He hissed at his poor aim. He hit one several times and it dropped. He wished that he had his hammer. This was why he needed the wolf’s help. There were weapons in that pack.

Kaiden noticed his aim waver a little. A scar that didn’t use a bow? Well that wasn’t entirely unexpected but odd. His head turned as well at the piercing scream, and then he was yanked to his feet. Kai grabbed his shotgun and started firing. Unfortunately this weapon was short range so he moved steadily closer. He watched the scar fire several arrows into one and raised an eyebrow. Shaking his head, Kaiden focused on the infected in front of him. One was headed towards the scar and Kaiden flipped to the side with a ‘watch out!’ And fired, taking it down. He reached into his pack and reloaded his shotgun. A clicker came screeching at him and he had just enough time to dodge, kick its back and knock it down and fire at its head. The last one, a runner was heading towards them, and his shotgun jammed. Seriously?! First his pistol then his shotgun. Okay. Kaiden ducked, and turned to the side and groaned as claws grabbed his arm and raked down. He swung his fist around and punched it away, holding his arm with his good hand, he backed up, watching the runner until he couldn’t back up anymore. His back was against the side of a truck. Kaiden looked around and saw a crowbar, he kicked it towards the scar, maybe he could use it on the runner. Maybe.

He did not like the bow. Ezekiel was trained in it, and he was moderate at a good time. Perhaps he would have been better had he not had to pry it from his friend’s limp hands. Perhaps he would have been better had he not been fighting for his life alongside the enemy. This enemy was a good shot. He appreciated that. He took down many without much effort. Of course, then his firearm jammed. This was why he did not put his trust in those. Granted, he likely could use one of them better than the bow much to Janna’s chagrin. He shot several more arrows, but the more he tried, the more he missed. The more he missed, the more he became frustrated. Finally, he tossed the bow aside. He would fight with his body. It was better than that. But the wolf had another idea. A crowbar. Yes. That was a much better idea. He stopped down and picked it up. This felt so much better in his hands. One more demon, and it would be his pleasure to rid the world of it. He moved up quickly, quietly, and swung the crowbar into the demon without effort. As it stumbled to the side, he swung again, cracking into its skull. He watched it fall. Good. This crowbar was sturdy enough. He turned to the man on the ground and considered. What did he do with him now? Would he be shot in the back if he turned around? Likely. Though, did he have any more firearms? It didn’t appear so. What are you waiting for? He didn’t know. He backed up several feet, head snapping to the side. Was there more around? Perhaps. He should leave. He needed to get back to the island. So he turned and ran.

Kaiden watched as the scar took the crowbar and finished off the last demon. He held his cut up arm with his hand and saw him look at him. He watched him, keeping an eye on the man. Saw him back up several feet, before he turned and ran. He had no idea why he’d been saved, but he took it. Then he heard boots, coming closer. “Kaiden!” A familiar voice hit his ears and he looked up. Joshua and the rest of his patrol came running towards him. “I thought you were dead kid.” Josh said, helping Kaiden to his feet. He looked at Kaidens arm and sighed. “Let’s get you to Jacob. He’ll fix that arm. No bites right?” Josh asked as Kai shook his head. “No bites.” He replied, glancing back at the way the scar had run. Hmm. He turned to the patrol, ready to head back to the stadium, to get checked out by Jacob.

Soren at 57.
portrayed by alexander skarsgård

“Hey, don’t go scaring my good soldiers!” Soren called as he pulled up the truck. He flung a hand over the door and smiled as he leaned back. Patting the door, he jerked his head to the side to call them all back in. He didn’t always bring the truck, but today, his knees were causing more trouble than it was worth. “Hop in, kiddo. The rest of you can walk.” He grinned and shook his head. “I’m just kidding. Hurry up though. I don’t want him bleeding out in my truck. What is it with you boys and the oozing and puking and in general being gross in my trucks? You’re all lucky that you’re cute.”

Yes, more wolves. A whole pack of them. They came on their large machine. Truck. Ezekiel ran quickly and quietly out of sight and back through the old building. So many dead. He took weapons he could find from the dead. This crowbar was nice, but this hammer was better. It was not as good as the large ones that he could retrieve back on the island. This crowbar. The face of the wolf on the floor came back to his mind. The wolf he didn’t kill. Why didn’t he kill him? No matter. He pushed it out of his mind. He gave thanks for his humanity, and he ran. He would make it back to the island within the next few hours.

Josh and Kaiden both looked at Soren and the older man shook his head. “How many times do I have to apologize for that. It was over twenty years ago man.” Josh muttered, remembering when they first met Soren and Hayden had puked in his truck. And several other times since then had one of them injured and bleeding in Soren’s trucks but who counted those? Kaiden chuckled though he clenched his teeth in pain. “Yeah yeah. I’m coming.” Kaiden, Josh and the rest climbed up in the truck. Josh in the front and Kaiden was hauled in the back with the others. “If you don’t want him bleeding out and want to see your husband sooner, let’s get going.” Josh teased Soren as Kaiden held his hand over his arm. The trip back to the stadium was uneventful, and soon they were pulling up to the gate.

“Hey Soren,” Nicki, who was stationed at the gate, greeted as he stopped the truck. “Whatcha got going on there?” Soren pointed back to them before hopping out of the truck. “Mostly good. Kai’s got an ugly arm.” He pointed to another of the group. “Hey, take the truck back, will ya? I’m going to walk in with them.” He moved to Kaiden in case he needed help out, though Josh was more than capable of doing that himself. “You know, other than bleeding all over, you don’t look half bad. So, how did you get all banged up like that? That was a whole lotta dead infected. I knew you were good, but man, that was something else.” He waved to Nicki as they moved through the gates and towards the medical tent.

Kaiden appreciated the help down and off the truck. He walked between Josh and Soren, but his attention drew to Soren. “Well. I used a Molotov, a crowbar and my pistol, shotgun. It wasn’t easy, but I guess my training paid off. Though my pistol and shotgun both jammed. A runner just got a lucky shot in on my arm and knocked me down.” Kaiden said, not wanting to tell them that he’d had help from a scar. He still couldn’t believe that he hadn’t been killed, and he’d run away instead. Kai thought about him for a moment as they walked to the medical tent. His attention was shifted when Jacob came out, arms crossed over his chest. “And here I thought it was going to be a clean homecoming and no injuries. Kai.. come on.” Jacob said, but before he led Kai away, he sent a smile to Josh and kissed Soren real quick. “You two are coming in as well, I’m going to check you out too.” Jacob said, leading them inside the tent and pointing to three empty cots. “Sit.” Jacob said, Josh and Kai each sat down on one while Jacob started cleaning Kai’s arm. The youngest hissed in pain at the feeling of the alcohol. Three long scratches were shown, and Jacob got to work stitching them. “How was your patrol otherwise?” Jacob asked as he worked.

“Well, that’s just unendingly impressive,” Soren responded as they entered the tent. He rolled his eyes at his husband. This was unnecessary. He stood between the cots that Josh and Kai were on. “I understand that you’re like this, and you know that I love that about you, but I’m fine. I’m just the getaway driver.” He laughed and smiled and winked at the boys as he leaned against Josh. “Mm, oh, Kaiden got lost but he took out what looked like a horde of infected all by his lonesome, so I would say we did good. The rest of us had a boring day in the office. No scars came to hassle us or anything.”

Jacob rolled his eyes and grinned at his husband. “Oh Okay, so I guess I’ll just give you your check up in our room then hmm?” Jacob said with a wink and a grin. Josh, looking between them groaned as he felt Soren lean on him. “I don’t want to hear about your room and Jacob, I’m fine too. Nothing got me either.” Josh replied as Kai chuckled, hearing them. Jacob finished his work on Kai’s arm and nodded. “Just be careful ok hot shot?” Jacob said as Kaiden chuckled and nodded. He heard Soren and sighed, yeah. No scars. Except Kai wouldn’t be alive without the help of one and it was so confusing. “Thanks guys.” Kai said, looking between Jacob, Josh and Soren. His family. The only one missing was Hayden, and secretly Kai’s favorite of the four. But he never said that out loud.

As soon as Kai’s arm was finished, Soren slid beside Jacob. “Don’t be jealous, Joshua.” He leaned his forehead against Jacob’s. “We have to listen to you moon about Hayden all the time.” He kissed his husband like he always did, which was like they were still at the beginning of their fairytale story. “Speaking of, he said he wanted to meet us for dinner, and I’m starving. What about you guys?” He turned back at Jacob for one last long specifically for making others playfully uncomfortable kiss, and breathed, “I’ll be seeing you later.” He stepped out and hooked his arm around Kaiden’s. “Let’s go, little bit. Food. It calls to me.” He patted his belly. “Ooh, and you can tell Hayden all about your heroics. He’ll love that I’m sure.”

Jacob glanced at Soren when he slid beside him. He chuckled at the comment towards Josh who rolled his eyes as he felt his forehead against his. Jacob smiled into the kiss and kissed him back. He had a long night ahead of him, he didn’t switch shifts with Mel until ten pm. “Tell Hayden I said hey.” Jacob said before he was kissed again. “I’ll see you later Mr. Smith.” Jacob said with a wink as he watched the three head out. Josh just rolled his eyes at his brother and brother-in-law. “You two are ridiculous.” Josh commented. Kai felt Soren take his arm and he nodded. “I’m starving.” He replied, as Josh led the way towards the cafeteria. He was eager to see Hayden again.

As they left the tent, Soren wiggled his fingers and blew a kiss to Jacob. Was this for show? Sure. Was it also just how they were? Absolutely. Outside the tent, Soren sighed and followed Josh towards the FOB and the cafeteria. “So, anyone know what they’re feeding us today? Because this old belly is going to need more than those tiny little tacos they like to give us.” He laughed as they entered. They were close enough to their group meal, so no one was going to fuss. Besides, no one told Hayden no when he decided they were eating. The cafeteria was moderately crowded as usual. At their usual table, there was the last of their Smith family. He was at the end of the long table, leaning against the large blue pillar. He looked down at several books on the table as he so often did while he was waiting for his boys to return from their outings. Soren patted both the other two on the shoulders. “If you guys wanna sit down, I can get our food. Did he get his yet?” Soren looked over and shook his head. “Nope, whole fam. Got it.” He moved to the line.

Jacob had shaken his head at Soren but the smile on his face remained. Josh made his way to the FOB and the cafeteria, walking inside to see the love of his life and husband leaning against a large blue pillar. Kaiden smiled happily as he saw the last of his family. He looked at Soren and smiled, nodding. “Do you need any help getting dinner?” He asked while Josh kept walking. He came up beside Hayden and immediately wrapped the other man up in his arms. Sure they’d had some issues in their relationship but everything was much better now. “Hello love. How was your day?” Josh asked as he shifted slightly so he could kiss him like it was just the two of them before he pulled away with a smile.

Soren smiled at Kaiden with a big nod. “You know, probably since we’re getting meals for five of us.” Thankfully the line moved relatively quickly. His eyes flicked over to the touching reunion and back to them. “And he complains about me and Jacob?” He snorted a laugh and shook his head. “One day, that could be you, kiddo. Then you wouldn’t have to be so grossed about by all these old guys all over each other.” He laughed as they moved through the line.

Hayden didn’t see him coming, and was pleasantly surprised when there were arms around him. He smiled, a little contented hum encircling him. He hummed again at the kiss and smiled as Josh pulled away. He caught Josh’s eyes with his one remaining working one. Running from nearly to top of his head and down across his eyes and to almost the end of his chin was a scar that dominated much of his face. It was large and pink as it puckered. His eye, though still there, was no longer a working eye. It looked like it cracking. It was duller than its brown counterpart. Those many years ago had not been kind to him. But that was in the past. He wrapped an arm around Josh’s shoulders. “Not bad. Heather and I think we had a breakthrough for a new medicine that could work for some of the illnesses that keep cropping up.” Since marine biology didn’t work out, he shifted to normal biology instead. It meant that he could do things that were less violent than being a soldier and also got to work with Jacob more often.

Kaiden smiled and nodded, as he followed Soren to the line. He looked over at the two reuniting and smiled, before looking back at Soren, hearing his snorted laugh. Kaiden shook his head as he heard Soren. "I don't think so. I haven't found anyone yet, and since those newcomers came two years ago, we don't have any more people joining. So I doubt that. Besides, I don't need anyone." Kaiden said with a shrug of his shoulders. He was just fine on his own.

Josh heard the contented hum and smiled happily as he looked at Hayden. He had his own fair share of scars, one that ran along his right cheek and down his throat and across his neck was the worst, but the one on Hayden's face still made him sad. But he was thankful that Hayden was still alive and that was all that mattered. He never focused on the scar, not like he did when Hayden first got it. He used to stare at it more often than not when it first happened, but not anymore. He felt the arm around his shoulders and nodded, smiling. "That's good to hear, look at you working to create new medicine. Oh and Jacob said 'Hi' by the way." Josh said, kissing his temple gently.

Soren nudged Kai playfully and solemnly. “That’s okay too. I was totally fine being on my own. Really. I had decided I was just going to be me. And then there was Jacob. He came out of nowhere and then I couldn’t stop thinking about him. And that was that.” They reached the front of the line. “Four please. I got the whole crew as usual. ‘Cept Jacob. He’s stuck. I’ll probably come back and grab his in a little bit.” He turned back to Kai. “You know that story though. I don’t need to tell you again. Mm, thanks, Laura.” He grabbed two of the meals and started walking to the table.

Hayden gripped Josh and used him to sit down more easily onto the table bench. His body just didn’t work like it did before he fought with FEDRA all those years ago. He tried not to let this particular injury be noticeable too often. That one came when FEDRA got the better of him. That was the fight against Josh. That was a long time ago, but he didn’t want Josh to feel bad about it. “Uh huh, medicine today. Explosives tomorrow? Ammunition on Thursday? These people have my science brain and chemistry knowledge going full speed ahead.” He leaned his head in his hands. “But I wouldn’t have it any other way. Oh, honey, where is Jacob? Is he working until the end of time again?”

Kai shook his head at that, having heard the story of both Soren and Jacob along with Josh and Hayden more than once. "I know that but I just don't see it happening." He said with a shrug of his shoulders. When they reached the front of the line, Kai grabbed the other two meals and nodded to Laura. "Thanks." He said with a smile as he followed Soren to the table where he saw Hayden sitting with Josh. He sat down at the table and set one meal in front of Josh and the other in front of Hayden before he sat down across from them.

Josh felt Hayden grip him, knowing that it was easier to use him to sit down at the bench. He still hated that the fight had happened, and it was the one that finally drew him from FEDRA to join Hayden. He knew it was a long time ago, but he still felt bad. He had driven Hayden to leave but that was the past. The future was much better now. "They really have you working hard. But I know you like it. Keeps that scientific part of you happy. And yeah, Jacob's working until late tonight." He said as he looked up to see Kai and Soren headed over, and saw Kai set down their meals before he sat down across from him. "So Kai, wanna tell Hayden all about patrol today?"

Hayden sat right up on Josh. Ever since they finally found a way to work everything out, they were the picture of the perfect couple. Or perhaps that was Soren and Jacob. Or maybe the Smiths in general were the kinds of people everyone else wanted to be. It only took years of emotional and physical pain alike. “Oh?” Hayden asked, his hand resting on Josh’s thigh. It was for support and also closeness. “Was it exciting? I see you needed a patching. Josh, didn’t I tell you to keep my boy safe?” Soren placed his second meal in front of Kai and started eating. This would be good a third time. Especially with Hayden? He always gave the most fun reactions.
