Races –
Humans
: Humans are the most abundant and most naturally diverse race that inhabits the land of Astoria. With their appearances often influenced by their environments, those from the cost are often darker-skinned and built for swimming, while those further inland are fairer and made for hard work that comes with caring for horses. In the north, once again they're often darker-skinned, most of the time stockier or plumper to deal with the cold. They are also no strangers to natural magic, as humans like any other race (with the exception of dwarves) can learn any magic. Typically they are limited to a few rather basic spells unless they decide to spend their lives learning a magical discipline. Crossing magical types for Humans is inherently hard, which means often if they know multiple spells they are most of the time, from the same school. The youngest race in Astoria, Humans are rather industrious and extremely resilient, they have over the past 200 years claimed territory from the other races, which makes almost every other humanoid race wary of them. Especially during the current reign of King Sebastian and Queen Amalia. (5 spells max, though it’s hardly common to meet a human who knows five)

Elves: Elves are the second most abundant race on Astoria, elves all follow a few different but all very similar appearances. They’re shorter than most humans, fairly lithe, with light hair. But there is certainly a reason people call them beautiful, an almost ethereal look that changes with each type. Snow Elves are pale, white hair and striking blue eyes and cold aura, whereas elves more akin to heat and the forest are darker, often brilliant hazel eyes and gorgeous curls. Some types of elves are rarer than others, an entire subspecies of elf disappearing almost 1000 years ago if you believe the stories. Magically gifted, elves find the easiest time learning magic. And with their extended lifetime, they have plenty of time to do so. Different types of elves have a natural inclination to different types of magic (Snow Elves find ice/frost magic much easier, Forrest elves find natural magic such as spells that do with plants and animals much easier, etc, etc.) Crossing classes is a bit easier for them as well, though you rarely find an elf that does so. The oldest race, tired with the dwarves, in Astoria they are a refined people. It’s not uncommon to see them in every type of job and social class, the other races often find them snotty or uptight when in reality…well, that's true most of the time. (6 spells max)

Goblins (Non-Player): These are ugly, very common creatures that come in one of three shades. Green, gray, or blue. Very short, with a habit of snatching shiny stuff, nobody actually knows where they came from. They’re just here to cause chaos. Well, the males of the species are, the females are a little better. Often they’re seen as quite cute, much smarter than their male counterparts, and end up in service jobs, such as barmaids, or prostitutes. Goblins also cannot breed with anyone outside of their species. Anyway, male goblins are often causing trouble and when they form large enough groups, it’s common to see posters up for the counter hunters or town guards who want some extra coin asking for their disposal. Goblins are also, somehow, capable of magic. Reserved for the shadowy type of magic for quick getaways and the ability to sneak into places they aren’t supposed to be, they’re also commonly seen using a rogue's skill set.

Orcs: Tall, muscular, and loud, Orcs came from across the sea about 75 years ago to negotiate staking a claim of their own in Astoria. Seeing as how they're here, they were successful. Not a very diverse race, either being green or brown and always with dark hair and eyes, Orcs are a very proud people. While not many live here, their few settlements housing between 200-600 of them each, they have quickly gained respect as a people. Strong, sturdy, human and elves have both made agreements with them that in times of danger, the orcs are seen as protectors. And savages. They are not as well developed as some of the other races, semi-nomadic, and with views people see as wrong, they are simultaneously looked up to and down upon. Orcs are also capable of having crossbreed children with other mortal races (although those pregnancies are successful 1 in 1000) and find magic somewhat difficult. Those who have the ability can use one or two spells and crossing schools is impossible. (2 spells max)

Half-Elves: Diverse in appearance like their human parents, and blessed with good looks and an extended life like their elven parents; these half breeds shouldn’t exist in the eyes of either. Half-elves are seen as a blemish on elven society, and humans dislike them simply because they aren’t human. Half-elves are rare for this reason and often kept a secret from the public when they do appear. Forced into lines of work such as mercenaries, brothel women, or lowly work, you almost never see one in a seat of power. They are seen as exotic prizes to slavers and beautiful people to have around but are never valued much. They are little more than a novelty. Half-elves are capable of magic easily, however, limited to only being able to learn four spells. They can learn whatever spells they wish to thanks to the human, though their elven parent can make some easier or more difficult. And, crossing classes is much easier for them to do than it is for humans. (4 spells max)

Tieflings: Large, grey horned creatures with hair that while typically dark in color, can be white or blonde. Tieflings are not native to Astoria and arrived 200 years ago with the humans. They are often feared by the humans and other mortal races for their size. There’s actually a rumor that they are related to the dragons themselves…but that’s just a story. Right? They are naturally stronger than humans, elves, and dwarves, which means they’re often found in physically demanding jobs. Building, bodyguards, mercenaries, you name it. As feared as they are, the tieflings are finally well respected. While it’s rare to see them as nobles, they are certainly not blocked from gaining status. They’re secretive about what their their ways were back before arriving in Astoria, but given how many of them follow one of the many religions in Astoria, it’s safe to say they were and still are a deeply spiritual folk. (3 spells max)

Faye: Ranging from small bug sized pixies to large four-legged moss beasts, the Faye are even more diverse than the humans. And once, they were large in numbers and roamed Astoria freely, they have since retreated into the forests, mountains, and the dark places of Astoria to avoid them. Often Faye are hunted down for their body parts which can be used as alchemy ingredients or medical components. Magically inclined people have an easier time finding them, but these creatures are wary and hate humans, orcs, and goblins. They distrust elves, but are more welcoming of them. Magic comes easy to them, mostly natural, water, and fire magic, crossing schools is extremely difficult based on the type of faye. Those with human intelligence find it about as easy as humans do, whereas those with less intelligence can't cross schools even if they can perform magic. And all Faye, no matter what type, how big or small, are weak to iron. (3-6 spells depending on level of intelligence and type of faye, I will let you know)

Dwarves: Short, stocky, and very proud of facial hair no matter the gender (facial hair competitions are a favorite past time of theirs), they are a proud and very old race. Inhabiting Astoria for just as long, as the elves, perhaps longer, the north is their home. Those gorgeous mountains you always see in the distance are filled with tunnels and intricately carved cities. These are people who mine the precious gems and metals that all of Astoria uses, there is not a single race who looks down upon them…in a metaphorical respect kind of way. Unlike many of the other races in Astoria, Dwarves are completely incapable of magic. It’s an oddity that nobody has yet to be able to explain, but they make up for it in combat prowess and the inability to get hungover. (No magic, no exceptions)

Demons (Non-player): The opposite of Faye, demons are rare and dark forces of nature born from malice and dark rituals. They come in many different forms, from mindless shades and shadows, ghouls in the forms of dogs and vultures, to the incubuses and devils. While not all demons give into their true nature, some even going against their nature for good; like goblins finding demons on wanted posters or in job requests are not an uncommon sight. There are a few demons mages can enter a contract with, but these mages are looked down upon. Anyone who uses the dark arts is. Fear is a powerful mistress.

Dragons (Non-Player): Dragons have been hunted to near extinction, with the hunts stopping nearly 25 years ago when the last 7 disappeared beyond where the humans could reach. Large winged creatures who speak an ancient tongue nobody remembers even existing. They are hidden well, and distrustful of every race. Some are even willing to kill on sight in order to protect themselves. Those that have met the dragons will find highly intelligent creatures who remember the dawn of man, who possesses an immensely powerful presence. Should anyone ever see the dragon’s shadows in the sky again, they should prepare for death.

Giants (Non-Player): Just as rare as the dragons, the Giants have all retreated into a lost portion of Astoria behind the Emerald Mist. That’s a place no mortal dare go, the creatures grow strange and morbid, magic grows weak in the most races, and once you enter, you may never leave. All times on giants have been lost, an ancient library lost in the mist, but all across Astoria, you can find their ruins. Large vaulted ceilings and immaculate artistry in old castles and tombs, many people believe they've all died off. Whether that's the truth or not, nobody knows.

The continent of Astoria is widely populated by the different mortal races. Large forests, expansive plains, and a gigantic mountain range on the northmost part of the continent. Small villages and brand new settlements dot the landscape, but there are many different towns, city’s, and camps you should know about. We will most likely not be stopping at all of them, but this makes it easier to pick a birthplace. And do keep in mind that I am listing what makes each town special. Just because I have not outright stated how many farms there are, doesn’t mean the town/city has none. Each town has at least two farms (produce and livestock), a blacksmith, an inn, a public bathhouse, and other basics that the people would need to survive. It also doesn’t mean that each town or city is lacking in certain specializations, each location has its own reason for being known.

  • Terberis: Unsurprisingly, Tebreis is the largest of the human cities…It’s the capital. The second oldest city as well, the first their old capital being Liomura. It was accidentally burnt down after some guards let a game of poker get out of hand. Just outside of the walls are a few farms, both livestock, and produce. The slums are just inside the city walls, and slowly the buildings and way of life will get better and better. The market place sells goods from all over Astoria and even a few products you can’t get in any other market place such as specialized furniture, expensive artwork, and goods from the other kingdoms.

Reaycaster: The second largest and sister city to Terberis, Reaycaster is the home of the Lucien Magical Academy. The largest, and safest place for humans to learn any form of magic. There’s a large library closed to the public, plenty of practice space, and once you graduate after 12 years, you have the choice of leaving with a sigil to prove you’ve gone to the Academy, or you can chose to continue your studies and eventually gain the rank of master and go on to teach other mages. There are a large number of nobles in this town, the slums being outside of the city walls with the farms. Every year during the summer, a masquerade is held at one of the Lord's manors.

Grayport: The largest port there is in Astoria, Grayport is known for three major things. The large fish market that sells plenty of fresh fish and sea creatures. Building large ships to help build the human navy. And the black market. The people of Grayport and those that live in the surrounding area are taxed higher than the other citizens of Liomura thanks to the sudden demand for new ships. Then, if you exit the city and walk two miles west into the woods, you'll find a crypt. Enter, and head down on the third of each month and you'll find traders with illegal wares. Magic books of forbidden spells, armor and weapons civilians can’t buy, goods other races do lot want the humans to get their hands on. Everything down here is expensive, but if you want it bad enough, the price shouldn’t matter.

Roalon: While not a major Astoria supplier like Odelun is, but Roalon was built around/on a very large deposit of gold. There are quite a few blacksmiths and small foundries that mint human currency and create gorgeous jewelry. The more common designs are sent off and sold in other cities, while the more intricate designs are only sold in Roalon. The people from Roalon are often very good with their hands, and find the roguish acts much easier to pick up.

Fayvain: Producers of paints, chalk, and ink, Fayvain is a major stop when making your own runes or just buying them. Using shells and plants that grow both around the city naturally and ones they grow themselves for color, waxes, oils, and some sort of powdery mineral for bases, and hand made ceramics and glass-blown bottles for storage. Like with the rocks from Rockwater, any chalk, paint, or ink can work for making funds but the products from Fayvain have a higher rate of success. But Fayvain has a darker secret. For the past 10 years, there have been a series of unexplained murders, and nobody knows who is behind it or why they keep going. They are young women, mostly in their 20s, and their bodies are often arranged in such a way that copies local works of art. They will often be missing organs or all of their blood, which have led the locals to believe there’s a vampire in their midst. Of course, that’s a load of nonsense.

Viermont: Founded by Reginald Harmont, Viermont is a large city based on clothing and non-forged armors. The things these people can make out of silk, wearable masterpieces, are very impressive. Nobles from every race come to Viermont in hopes of getting one of their many tailors and seamstresses to make them something special to wear. And their cloth, leather, and armor accessories are certainly something every adventurer light on their feet desires. Armorers from Odelun even come and sometimes ask for the quality leathers they use, and this is the human city dwarves like the most.

Westmont: This city was founded by Reginald Harmont's younger brother, Barnaby Harmont (which means the cities are in a never-ending sibling feud and epic prank war) Westmont is where most of Astoria's human cosmetics come from. They are expensive but well made, nobles usually being the only ones who can afford them. On the cheaper end of Westmont, products are war paints. Even if you tend to make your own, Westmont products are still in high demand.

Halamead: This is a small town up near the Osharian Mountain range that is famous for one thing, and one thing only. Alcohol. Beer, Mead, Wine, you name it, Halamead makes it. These people grow every ingredient themselves, and use a very special water that comes from the mountains. The soil around Halamead is especially rich, and the people here think it’s because when the town was founded, most of the forest was lift undisturbed and the Faye are respected, unlike other places. The nearby city of Roalon, in exchange for extra alcohol, provides most of Halamead's other necessities for a very low price.

Starmere: Also known as the town of fallen stars, in the town square sits a large meteor. There’s a weird energy about the place, more mages being born here than anywhere else, they also have a lot of luck when it comes to fishing and hunting. Catfish, Salmon, and large trout are common in the rivers that surround the town, and they stay year-round, unlike other places. Deer and gamefowl are the most common things to come back with when hunting, and never seem to be in short supply. It was here, the breakdown bow was invented.

Bleakshear: As the name would imply, it’s pretty bleak here. It’s mostly bandits and mercenaries. But, they have a sturdy set of rules. A code that they have to follow or else you’re kicked out of the town. It’s almost like a democratic society, everyone looks out for each other and such. They have no outstanding imports or exports, though the shoes made here are of expert craftsmanship and the soles don’t wear out as quickly as other shoes.

Swiftwood: Founded by an old bandit nobody actually remembers that much, built on the bones of his old camp. Another one of the many coastal towns, Swiftwood is known for making shell-based jewelry and accessories for weapons and other handmade trinkets. There are also a large number of prostitutes here in Swiftwood, the founder loved the ladies after all.

Freyford: An odd, dark place to live, the landscape and creatures getting more obscured the closer you get to the Emerald Mist. It always smells like rain, you can always hear bullfrogs in the distance, and there’s a permanent sense of dread in the air. There’s a dark forest surrounding the town, which houses a menagerie of rare creatures and demons, so the townspeople here host hunts and sell the parts or captured creatures to other towns for the goods Freyford needs.

Houndhelm: A small town close to the coast, Houndhelm is known for breeding war dogs. It rains a lot down there, the ground is almost always muddy and winters are harsh. But the people are strong and sturdy. A lot of what they have was made by hand, so people here often have a lot of small skills, fishing and sewing being the big two. But above all, everyone knows how to handle dogs, and often the war dogs are treated better than the humans here since the breeders (which is a good chunk of the Houndhelm population) always put the hound's wellbeing above their own.

Dewgate: Dewgate is a very simple fishing village on the southern coast of Astoria. Close to Matlock and Fayvain, Dewgate produces sea salt. On either side of the town is fairly large expanses before reaching the rivers, are large buildings where seawater is brought in buckets and boiled off so the salt is left behind. The salt from Dewgate is transported to every city, which then allows the people to buy it. Those who are born here often find the sea calling to them.

Antiva: A very small town, a village really, near the end of the human territories on the Eve Thelmar border. Fishermen are just as common here as archers and rogues. Antiva ends up being where Elves stop to rest on their way home or after crossing a large forest and the river that splits into three separate parts. They also have a lot of elven textiles and weapons given their close proximity to Eve Thelmar. On the town's eastern border, is a large apple grove, which allows for them to sell the apples straight or make cider which is very popular in Grayport, Terberis, and Odelun. On the small island where the river splits, sits an unmarked grave. If you sit out there long enough at night, it’s said you can hear the spirits giving you advice.

Tavila: This is a town in a fairly similar position to Antiva. Downriver from the main Eve Thelmar, a lot of elves first visiting the human empire end up here. So, Tavila is a very welcome and open community. And have perfected the art of drying and curing meats. Hunters and adventures like the stop here and exchange their kills and gold for dried meats that last a long time. They also have river traders that regularly go up to Antiva, Marzon, and Mythsari.

Ambergarde: Antiva may have the apple orchard, but Ambergarde has it all. One of the larger towns, they have a lot of fruit trees and some other farms that cover what else they need in order to survive. Based on the season, the fruit they sell changes, and during the winter Ambergarde puts their energy into making baked goods people willingly travel hundreds of miles for. Their blacksmiths make tools just as often as they make intricate pie tins.

Farcrest: Farcrest is a fairly new town, born from a few small villages and nomadic people in the area, it helps with the large distance between Fayvain and Grayport. It has a large inn and tavern, it’s mostly a place for travelers to rest. The people here though have retained their traditions, often holding large festivals or community dances for various reasons. Visitors are welcome to join should they ever be in town when one of these festivals happen.

Clearborne: A large town that isn’t big enough to be a city just…spread out, Clearborne is famous for raising horses. Warhorses that are transported to the capital to join the military are raised on the east side of town, trained to obey the various commands they'd face in the military. Workhorses are raised on the other side of town, and while a few are kept to help work the few produce farms in Clearborne, the others are transported to the other town and cities as they pay for them. Bandits are often a problem here, so while Farriers and other people who work with horses are very popular, warriors/guards are the second most common occupation in Clearborne.

Eldergrove: This small island town sits on what used to be a large elder wood cluster, nothing much happens here. It’s always muddy, cold, and rather unpleasant smelling. But that is probably just the shellfish. Oysters, muscles, and clams caught on the coastline of Eldergrove. When transported to the capital, an old mage travels with them to help keep them cold. Rockwater and the two elven towns get them as well, but much faster since the island they’re all sat on is fairly small. In the middle where the territories split, someone sat up a small field where once a month, those who know how to fight show up and train together before having a large party.

Rockwater: You know sometimes humans are pretty uncreative when it comes to names, Rockwater is the home of a large quarry and a very uninspiring name. It’s nowhere near the producer Odelun is, the quarry here produces a special type of rock that can be smoothed out and used for runes. While any type of rock or surface can be used for runes, these rocks from the quarry here have a proven higher rate of success. Because of the coastline, the people of Rockwater also have a very interesting past time. Shark hunting. For three months during a large migration of fish, the people of Rockwater board some boats and hunt sharks. The skin and shark teeth are popular aesthetic for swords and bows.

Matlock: A small town nestled in a forest that grew over a large cliff. Either side of the cliff slopes down to a coastline, though Matlock isn’t known for the fishing. It’s known for three things. On the west of town, technically just outside of Matlock town limits, is one of the oldest human churches in Astoria. The cliff it’s built on is technically an old giant ruin, some sort of castle maybe. Nobody can read what the writing on the walls say. And furniture. The forest Matlock resides in is full of a menagerie of different types of trees and the carpenters here make very sturdy furniture. It’s transported to most of the cities and while the furniture isn’t cheap, it’s worth it.

Magic -
Magic is an abundant resource in Astoria, pretty much every known race is capable to some degree. Though there’s a question as to where it comes from. Some say it’s a gift from the gods, wanting their creations to help them survive the harsh world they had previously created. Other's believe it’s a natural connection to the elements, or in the wildest theories, say the humans of old made deals with demons and Faye to take their power temporarily but never held up their end of the deal. Regardless of how it came to be, magic is a normal part of everyday life. Anyone who has magical ability knows at least one spell. Some sort of fire spell is a popular choice. So, there are seven main schools of magic that range from common to rare disciplines. And each school draws different people to study.

There are seven main schools of magic. Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Natural, Light/Divine, and Dark/Demonic. The first four are the easiest to learn by humans, fire especially. There are spells in these schools you use in everyday life, and normally have to spend years before being able to learn very powerful spells. Fire and Earth are favored by warriors, some of the most combat-ready spells, whereas water and air are favored by the classes lighter on their feet. Natural magic, involving plants, animals, and other beasties, is the magic favored by elves. Shapeshifting comes from this school and is typically a rather difficult magic to learn and seen in advanced studies, though not impossible for new mages. Light/Divine magic deals with buffs, healing, clearing cursed areas, etc, etc. It takes a very specific type of person to wield this type of magic, very caring with deep empathy for others. Clerics, Healers, and Paladins are held to a much higher standard than other classes, almost revered. Dark/Demonic magic is on the opposite side. Spells that deal with fear, shadows, curses, and the dead, mages who learn from this school are looked down upon, typically these mages being evil or will ill-intent. The mages who practice the dark arts are often easily corrupted by demons.

There are spells that do not fit in any school as well, these are combination spells. Very powerful combination spells like calling a meteor shower or creating a fiery tornado are not commonly seen in the everyday folk of Astoria. But, there are some combination spells that are very, very, very common. Spells like Lighting, which combines fire and air, ice, magma, poison, etc, etc.. Or above mentioned Fire Tornado. Anyone capable of a combination spell can usually only learn one, in very rare cases, two. But those capable of powerful combinations are always older. At least, 35 or older.

Enchanting weapons and armor, a rather recent development in magic circles, but have quickly proven its use. Enchantments are not able to be performed by just anyone, a hard process that requires great will and concentration, there are currently only a select few people who can do so. Which makes the process rather expensive. Fire, Electricity, and Frost enchantments have so far been the only ones that work, and each one has a set amount of uses before needing to be recharged with magical energy. Luckily, should you know a spell that relates to your enchantment, recharging is a simple process of focusing magical energy into the weapon. Arguably a much sought after magic tool, the commonplace to see enchantments are with warriors who wear the crown's colors. While Enchantments are limited, your weapons may still be doused in poisons, holy water, or oils to cause additional damage.

While most spells are active, and you must take time to cast them, elves often have a passive spell that does not require to be cast. Half-Elves profit from this as well. Like every other magical ability, these passive abilities need to be developed, and you can only have one! Other races do not experience passive abilities, which makes it a rare skill. If you use a large amount of mana, your passive ability weakens almost to a state of not being there, no matter what it is. And only return once you’ve had enough rest to regain your mana. Most of the time, passive abilities deal with sensing things through the ground or trees, speaking to animals, or being able to know exactly what a plant is without much training.

Technology/Advancements -
Astoria is a land where almost everything is still set in the ways of swords, shields, and buckets. Horses and other ridable creatures are the main way of transportation. Carts, carriages, and wagons are used as well and are a very common sight on many roads. Now, smaller villages and towns have very little in terms of technological advancements. Normally the most advanced thing is a public bathhouse to keep everyone clean. Larger cities however are the opposite. Sewer systems and indoor plumbing for the rich, experimental electricity powered by runes and magic, as well as access to prototypes for new inventions. While currently things like this are required for the capital of Astoria, Reaycaster the second largest city is beginning to see some of these advancements.

Blades, bows, and shields are still the main weapons in Astoria, though gunpower has been discovered and experimented with, guns are a very rare weapon. Flintlock style guns that can only fire a single bullet before needing to be reloaded in a very long process that's still not streamlined for battle. However, gunpowder is still a useful tool for distractions being combustible, and fireworks are used in festivals and other celebrations. One advancement that is a little more common is takedown bows. Made of steel or wood, these bows can break down into two parts for easy concealment and often come with a protrusion for close-quarters combat.

Armor comes in all types, made from any different materials. Some more common than others. Iron, Cloth, Leather, and Chainmail are the most common and worn by pretty much anyone. Adventures and Bounty Hunters just starting out are often wearing one of these types of armors because of the availability. Steel, Platemail, Elvish and Dwarven crafts are all much more expensive and typically reserved for skilled warriors and soldiers. These armors are stronger than the common types, so definitely worth the extra money you have to pay in order to use it.

Runic Magic is also a useful tool, and since its discovery about 80 years ago, it has become an integral part of Astoria hardware. There are many different types of runes, ranging from traps you bury in the ground to create land mines, to large barriers than can trap or repeal certain magical creatures. There are some you can use as flashlights. Making them, however, requires a few special steps. You need magically infused ink or chalk, magical abilities, and above all else, knowledge of the runes. It’s temperamental magic, and those who have no idea what they’re doing can end up seriously hurting themselves or others. Shops that sell ingredients for alchemy normally have the supplies to make them on sale or sell premade runes which quickly became a very lucrative business for those who survived learning how to make them. Most everyone has access to basic runes, while combat-focused ones are reserved for guild warriors, military, and royal guards. Embedding them in weapons has recently started to be experimented with, and unlike enchantments, has so far been unsuccessful.

While Runes can’t be placed on weapons, the connection too unstable, and the runes more likely to break and fail, they can be placed on accessories, like necklaces, collars, and belts. Typically these runes don’t do much, the nobles often wearing them for emergencies or party tricks. But some are used as wards. Slavers and lords put them on certain people who “work” for them. It keeps them from running, using magic, or harming a certain person. It’s a type of ward rune that the person forced to wear it cannot remove it. High profile and profitable targets are typically the one’s forced to wear these runes, as well as people who would typically very easily break free and turn on the one’s that put it on them.

Religion -
There are many different religions in Astoria, each race worshiping what they wish to. Differences cause problems just like they would everywhere else and are another reason that while nobody is at war, but never agrees fully on anything.

  • The humans are monotheistic mostly, but still worship a select few major spirits they believe work for their main god. The humans see Enone as the creator of all and protected of their world. Their religious tomes tell that while he is benevolent, Enone has very little mercy and listens to prayers rarely. You must grovel for what you need, and live your life completely in his service before even having the smallest of chance of ascending after death for an afterlife full of luxury. Should you disobey Enone, your soul is cast I to a shadowy abyss where you can’t tell one thing from the next. Enone has four main servants the humans will still occasionally pray to in order to help Enone make his final decision. After all, Enone loves to see his underlings praised. The Tieflings that live in Astoria often worship Enone as well given how integrated they are in Human society. But many stray and practice different religions.
    • Sariel, Angel of Safe Birth: This is the spirit humans pray to when they are with child. They believe Sariel watches over pregnant women, and certain offerings such as strawberries or daggers can influence their babies gender
    • Hasmal, Angel of Death: Hasmal is the one humans call upon when their time is near if his name didn’t give that away. They pray for safe passage to the other side and peaceful death. Warriors carry Enone's symbol mixed with the Scythe of Hasmal for good luck in sending him souls. Some people call upon his and Enone's name to curse their enemies to a torturous afterlife.
    • Adoel, Angel of Harvest, and Good Crops: Humans have a festive in the fall shortly before the final farm harvests that they believe Adoel will bless them for the next year. During the winter, they believe Enone lets Adoel leave until spring to enjoy a nice vacation.
    • Gadeil, Angel of Riches, and Good Fortune: Gadeil is the one more favored by the rich. They pray to her and Enone in hopes of maintaining their wealth. Warriors will sometimes carry a token with her likeness for luck like they do with Hasmal. Most people leave offerings of bread and beer for her to help increase their luck.

Government and Political States -
On the continent of Astoria, there are four main governments. The one you follow depends on which nation you were born under, but you must respect the rules and leaders of each nation. If you were not born into that nation, you are merely a guest in their territory, and breaking laws typically don’t end well.

  • The human nation built on the ideas of aristocracy. It was founded 200 years ago when the humans first arrived in Astoria, Liomura being their first town. It has since been reduced to rubble, but the ideals set in place of King Lucien and Queen Genevieve all those years ago have persisted. The royal family sits on top, under them various nobility, then warriors/soldiers, merchants, artisans, farmers, the lower class, and then tieflings. It’s very hard to rise above the class you’re born into, often luck or marrying up are the only two hopes someone may have. The human empire is currently the largest in Astoria, having very quickly claimed land from the elves and territory that had been left alone due to high monster presence. They have now, however, tried to intrude on the ancestral homes for the Elf and Dwarven capitals. The human military is a very large and very strong force of nature made up of people from every walk of life. Men are the only ones allowed to serve in active combat during war, but seeing female medics, intelligence officers, and mages among them is not an uncommon sight as those roles are mostly support. The human cavalry soldiers are the strongest, with a small budding navy. The current rules are King Sebastian and Queen Amalia. They took the throne about 10 years ago after King Jordan the Third passed away. He left no children behind and named Sebastian, a trusted friend and popular noble, his successor. At first, they were popular rulers, but slowly their high taxes, unfair policies against everyone who was not a noble, and a sudden band on certain things like using magic in public and guildless bounty hunters, trouble is slowly brewing.

Currently, there is no war. But as the human king and queen slowly try and claim more and more land, tensions are growing higher. Over the past ten years, there have been many, many changes. Mages who are not registered with the Lucien Magical Academy or have some sort of symbol from the elven kingdom are forced into the academy for study. There has been a very sharp increase in bandit and slaver activity in every region of Astoria save for Odelun. And any rumors of rebellion, stealing the throne, or anything that could threaten the power of King Sebastian is immediately snuffed out. The people see King Sebastian as a tyrant, a monster, and cannot understand why Queen Amalia would still stand by him. She is the one who reads to children in the orphanage, who has been fighting with her husband for the tiefling rights and pushing for more protection, the one who wants what's best for the people. While King Sebastian has slowly grown to be a hated man, Queen Amalia is still loved by the masses.

Calendar -
For the sake of keeping everything simpler, all of Astoria follows the same 12 month calendar. First created by the humans, but then adopted by the other races after their empire grew, it’s now the only calendar system in widespread use. The months are named after great kings and warriors, and the women who stood besides them whether as comrades in arms or as their wives. There are 360 days a year, 5 weeks for each 30 day month, and each season (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter) lasts about three or so months. They follow six day weeks, the names based on the humans' gods, angels, and first king in their recorded history. And each race has their own holidays, though I will not be naming all of them as they more than likely, will not be important to the RP. Astoria also follows an 11 step lunar cycle that lasts the entire month, the full moon and new moon alternating between ending up in the center of each month.
