Flight Captain John Adler

The landing was nothing short of a miracle. The aircraft would never fly again. When they beached it, the landing gear had been ripped off. The bottom of the fuselage was scraped badly and had torn open on rocks jutting out of the ground. Trees on the right side of the aircraft had torn off half the right wing. The left wing had dipped down and cracked badly. There had been some fuel leakage. But no fire. The fuselage had come apart exposing part of economy class. But surprisingly the injuries were minor. Noone had died. All were accounted for.

They had no idea whether their Mayday had got out. They weren’t certain of their position. For one thing, there wasn’t supposed to be any islands in this region. Even if there were, this island dwarfed Hawaii. They were lost.

The good news? They had a celebrity on board. She was the next JK Rowling. The woman’s name was Diane Matthews. And with wealth like hers there would soon be one hell of a search underway as soon as people realized something had happened to her flight. The crash had left her shaken in ways most couldn’t understand. She was suffering a form of PTSD. But she forced herself to cautiously overcome it, grateful for the help of the flight attendants, but asking them to check on her parents. They had been surprisingly fine and kept telling her parents not to worry. Her adoptive parents had been celebrating their 30th anniversary, so she had decided to treat them to a vacation the likes of which they had never been able to enjoy.

One of the second set of passengers to be evacuated were a couple blind women, a man in a wheelchair. One of the blind women and the man in the wheelchair had their hands full with a 6 year old girl despite her 9 year old brother doing his best to console her. She kept going on and on about Falkor - whoever that was. The flight attendants jobs were made far simpler by the fact that their handicapped passengers were doing their best not to slow things down and were more level headed than many of the sighted ones.

++++++++++++++++

It took the crew about two hours of work on the plane before they cleared a small group to go back in and start bringing out carry on items, while a second team went after pets. Then they started pulling luggage. It had been an 11 hour flight, having departed early in the morning. The crash had taken place about an hour out. So they still had plenty of daylight to start getting shelters erected.

The Captain took charge from the word Go. He got everyone’s attention and explained that while it was still early in the day, they had a long way to go to make a camp. He asked for a show of hands for military service members. Then he sought out those with camping skills. Those he put in charge. Everyone - with a very few exceptions - was expected to pitch in - even children. Children would have the task of clearing sleeping areas of rocks, older kids gathering firewood - with adult supervision.

Day 2

Their first day had proven relatively uneventful. The Captain had begun to wonder if they would ever get a camp started. Truth was, they didn’t really. Only about 10% of the group had a lean built. One of the best workers was a 9 year old boy named Atreyu. And he did that while handling his 6 year old sister and a dog. And he did so without the slightest complaint. He also suggested inviting Erika Channing to join them. One less problem for the Crew and Flight Attendants to deal with.

One of the First Class passengers, Diane Matthews, had thought to take a video through the window as they prepared for the crash landing. She had downloaded the video to her laptop to produce a map. This she enhanced and did sketches for the Crew.

Morning brought illumination in more ways than one. There was a very annoying group of man children who created more trouble than they were worth. But they overslept. That was probably the only thing that saved their lives. The survivors spotted their first unusual wildlife. It was a small group of Moa, a prehistoric flightless bird that had gone extinct in New Zealand back around the 1400’s. The good news was that it was an herbivore and served as a wake up call that this island would present dangers they were ill prepared to handle. The bad thing was that it did not like humans.
