Just so I'm on the same page as you regarding the possible retraining of skills, what is the verdict on that? I am going for the ability to do so for me to snag up the new Martial Arts style I'm hoping for before level eight or nine.
 
Cap'n - let me know when you are ready to play Hercules? I will have him simply appear and wake up in the back of one of the veritechs.

Sherwood - Heh. The verdict is I get to go back and look at what I wrote about it already, and make some decisions. Then I need to put those decisions into Shop Talk.

Here is where I am At This Moment (this is Not final; consider this a rough draft).

I am cool with the idea of characters taking away skills they have learned to get a second martial art style.

I'm looking at skills they've learned since second level, and Secondary skills and "Other" skills were the first level. All other O.C.C. skills stay as they are.

I also need to make clear to all of you how multiple martial arts systems work. Save for one unique exception, They Do Not Stack!

While the attribute bonuses accumulate, the bonuses to Strike, Parry, attacks per round, et cetera do not (save for that aforementioned exception).

One declares the system they are using at the beginning of the round. They can then switch between systems at the beginning of every melee round (Not attack). It is kind of similar to transforming a veritech; you have different abilities in one "mode" that you do not have in another. The big benefit being that you have the option of adapting to your situation in a way your opponent (very likely) does not.

If this does not make sense to you, let me know and I'll explain further.

That helps me out with another question I had regarding how the two styles would (or world not) stack in a fight. That all makes perfect sense, and is the same way I'd do it, too.

I will wait on making my changes to Mario until you have made it official on how the swapping out of skills will work.
 
My big struggle was which skill to pick up for fifth level. It was either Gymnastics or Research. One would be a benefit in combat, while the other makes sense for the doctor in her. I went with Research so far, but I'm still torn.
 
Btw Sherwood, I see you went with PB for your level increase. Going to be a pretty boy?

I like the idea of taking Research for Toph. If you have been going for the ace pilot trope for her, the gymnastics would be better, but you have the whole doctor thing going on. I like it.

No real questions; just arguing with myself over my skill for this level. Part of me really wants Gymnastics, but I am thinking that the Research skill will be useful, too.
 
It depends on how you are seeing Toph. Is she a doctor first, or more of a fighter jock? That should help you answer the question of which one to go with.
 
Okies! Psychie Psychie Here goes!

I recommend thinking in terms of your entire squad. Consider what benefits everyone. Not just your character, but the team Toph relies on.

As a Game Master, remember it's part of my duty to throw challenges at you guys. This includes combat challenges (no, we haven't had any of those! Not in this game! When has that ever happened? =) ).

Keep in mind I take every character's overall combat ability into my decisions. What challenges Mario must roughly challenge Elinor, etc.

At this stage in the game and in terms of raw combat bonuses, Toph is already and indisputably the "Top Gun" of the Wild Cards. Not to inflate the ego, but Toph is the Max Sterling of your squad. I believe she can take on anyone else in the squad with good chances of coming out on top.

I kindly welcome any PC to our Characters page if they would like to try to dispute this. Just look through every PC's combat bonuses. Again, speaking in terms of raw combat bonuses, Hercules is at the bottom of the list; Toph is firmly at the top (yes, Toph beats Shirley out too. Though she's a Close Air Support Specialist and a Natural Veritech Ace, Shirley is closer to Elinor's combat abilities).

Go Gymnastics and this gap widens. Sure, Toph gets better and badder, and I'm all for that! However, I want you (the player) to be aware that there will eventually come a point down the road where the baddies you're going up against will either A. Walk all over someone with Hercules's combat stats just to be a challenge for Toph or B. Toph is simply not threatened by the baddies I throw at the rest of the Wild Cards. That might sound fun at first, but I've seen it ruin a game or two in my time.

That point has not yet come, but if you so happen to continue to beef up Toph, the baddies (being perfectly in-character) might start sending things to take Toph on. Then it's up to the rest of the Wild Cards to improvise, adapt, and overcome (but if they win, there is extra XP to be had too. Quite a thing, huh?). =)

Reasons like these are entirely why I set up our Character Creation process and Leveling Guide the way I did. =)

Going the way of Research improves Toph's scholastic abilities, but... you as the player should know there will be times this skill will be of no use whatsoever (say, in combat) or of great value (in exploration or downtime). In my opinion as a player, Research is a terrific skill as it brings answers surer and faster than any other skill in the game (Gradicus has Research). In many cases, the dedicated Researching PC has a serious edge on everyone but a specialist in the field in question (and by this, I mean Dr. Kirin vs. Engineer Hall. Even with Research, Hall has the edge in all things Engineering as well she should, but the same goes for all things Medical for Toph if Hall were to Research medical knowledge).

So choose freely! There are no serious consequences either way.

Oh, and if it helps, Shirley has been having a rough time choosing skills since 4th level! Got any ideas? Hah! =)
 
You and Sherwood both bring up some very good points. Thank you for the input.

I will go ahead and stick with Research.
