Fantasy Fantasy adventure rp

Marasai

Junior Member
Hi. I'm looking for a light (JRPG-inspired) fantasy adventure to in a similar vein to the game Etrian Odyssey, the animes Overlord, Log Horizon, or (the highly divisive) Sword Art Online (without the virtual game elements), but the rps I checked out on here aren't quite what I'm looking for, which is why I decided to post this to see if anyone would be interested in creating a fantasy world together. I know it's a lot of work to create settings and plots and to run a rp so it'll doubtless be something that'll expand over time as our characters move to or learn about new locations. I'll provide more details below, and hopefully plan locations and plots with other people. If anyone's interested, please feel free to join this thread, and suggest ideas.

Hi, and thanks! Please feel free to post ideas if you like. We'll need a starting location, quests, and other stories. I'm writing something right now, and will post them before long.

Not a problem, though many things will be general and open at this stage.

Seeing as this is a world where adventuring is a viable occupation, the areas outside of human settlement must pose a fair amount of danger and mystery. Monsters, and dungeons are pretty much givens, but just the natural environment could be dangerous in itself.

The starting location is likely a verdant human settlement, which is neither too small nor too large, and surrounded by vast forests. Since I particularly like the overgrown look of Akihabara in Log Horizon, the starting location may look like that.

Jobs for adventurers are either listed at taverns as in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, or offered by an Adventurer's Guild as in Overlord, both of which charge a fee for the job's information. Of course, as in real life, not all jobs are posted, and many clients contact adventurers directly, and personal connections are useful for obtaining jobs.

Unlike the JRPG trope though, there likely won't be two nations at war nor would the world be in a particularly turbulent period where monsters are on the rise. Instead, the opposite is likely true with the world having survived radical changes and settling into a more peaceful era. Even so, many ancient magic, ruins, and constructs from former days still exist in the wilderness. Recovering wealth and valuable artifacts from the past is one of the major tasks for adventurers. In cases where a large ruin has been discovered, a patron may hire a team of adventurers to explore the ruin, and recover what they find within.<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_10/57a8c4dc245a9_PossibleStartingLocationLook.jpg.7ae1dd3c725e6f71c70232cf75d0fd0c.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="77918" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_10/57a8c4dc245a9_PossibleStartingLocationLook.jpg.7ae1dd3c725e6f71c70232cf75d0fd0c.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

I'll write a few starter quests on google docs relating to slime killing. Also, what currency will be used? Gold? And how valuable should gold be?

Gold, silver, and copper, in order of decreasing value. Edit: For the sake of comparison, let's say gold is equivalent to the purchasing power of a hundred dollars, silver, 10, and copper, 1.

Also, here's a wonderful resource we can borrow. In particular, check out the town and world creation sheets. Edit: Aside from the town's name, which can come last if we want to make a name that reflects the details of the town, let's go down the sheet and take turns answering a field on the sheet. For example, if I state the town population, Kyzaba, you can name the ruler/representative, and CoconutLeaves, you can fill out the environment then it'll be me again for representative buildings (at least until if more people join). And a different person will get to start each time so that we'll fill out different fields for each town.

Edit: Kyzaba, this may be helpful for the slime quests. http://www.kotohi.com/ryuutama/rt_data/scenario target_fight_v1.01.pdf

Here are two characters I made. One is a major character I'll be playing, and the other, a minor one who may have some influence on quests. Approximate references are in the attachments. The format is a simplified version of Ryuutama's. Please feel free to use them as examples.

Character name: Mir Oakley

Class: Merchant

Appearance:

She has wavy, blonde hair, a honey coloured scarf, navy blue tunic with vertical lines, plum coloured leggings, brown ankle boots, and sturdy, pale brown gloves, and tan breastplate.

Hometown & Reason for travelling:

She’s originally from Clearlake, a town situated by a sparkling, clear lake ringed by mountains on one side and a forest on the other.

Her job is to gather raw materials and supplies for shopkeepers and merchants who sell them to people in towns and cities.

Notes:

Mir is descended from elves who peacefully integrated into human society 200 years ago.

She enjoys reading, travelling, and tending flowers.

She’s a kinesthetic learner.

She doesn’t like being stuck indoors.

She learned swordplay and magic from a famous academy in the city

Her father is a merchant.

Equipment:

Weapon:

Short sword

Armour:

Breastplate

Metal bracers

Traveller's Outfit

Cape

Character name: Kairn Oswald

Class: Holy Lancer

Notes:

One of five great heroes who fought a demon and saved the world years ago. In the last battle, she was betrayed by her comrades and the kingdom she served, and died in despair trying to protect a people from extermination. She's still revered as a hero, but the truth is the hatred of her spirit when she died cursing the world was so strong, it gave rise to many powerful monsters.

Edit: Also, one location using the Town Creation Sheet to serve as an example, and to get us started.

Name: Strongmill

Originally named Wheatley, it was renamed after the town mil was constructed.

Is it too late to join? I am, by all intents and purposes, a rp newbie, but I've been craving a good rp and this sounds right up my alley. If there's anything I can help with as well, feel free to let me know. I do work full time though, so while at work I well check in as long as possible. If this is a deal breaker, I understand.

Of course not. By all means, please join us, and welcome!

Edit: And to help out, please help fill out the town and world creation sheets, and make your own character. That'll be help aplenty at this stage. You can see my characters in my previous post, and the name of a town as well.

Starter Quest

  • Farmer: “Argh… I’ve been sitting around, unable to make process on my farming needs ever since those stupid slimes decided to intrude upon my property. I have mouths to feed and I cannot deal with this nonsense. Can you come and help me with the slimes?”

Departure and Encounter: Starting town bar to back of farmer’s house.

Lol, that's terrific. I really like the sound of that quest.

Also, I want to include a basic system to travel and combat to add a dimension of unpredictability to the rp so I'l look into this.

I just purchased the Ryuutama book (more precisely, the pdf), and I'm flipping through it now. It's a simple system that I think we can adopt (partially). I'll read through some more of it then post the instructions for character making and so on here.

So here's my character!

Character Name: Zeke

Age: 21 years.

Class: Mystic Knight (basically a magic knight, but I think mystic sounds cooler, plus I'm a dragon's dogma fan)

Appearance: 6 ft, tanned skin w/ spiked, jet black hair. His unusual eye color is gold, and being a blacksmith, he has a buff physic. His casual clothing a simple dark blue tunic w/ black pants and black boots. He also has a dark blue apron and black gloves for when he is working at the forge.

Hometown: Zeke is from a little town called Hiddenpeace. It's a simple little town, where the it's townsfolk were always late to know the latest news. Zeke was "adopted" by the town smith, who taught him everything he knew. His father noticed how Zeke has a natural talent for forging swords and shields.

Reason for leaving: Zeke wants to make a sword and a shield that will become legend. They don't have to be the best, be a pair, or even be good or evil, the fates can decide all that. Zeke just wants his creations to be marked down in history. So he decided to leave and gather any and all materials to see what can he forge.

Notes: Zeke is a flirt. He knows he's easy on the eyes, and because he started forging at a young age, has developed a buff, toned physic (he thinks his arms are the best part about him). So he will flirt with any gender and has no problems using his body as well, either to get his way or just for fun. He is pleasant company to have around though. His father happened early retired knight, so he learned how to use fight from him. He also has some skill with magic, but he still needs training. To make money, every town he comes across, he offers his services to the smith, or any odds jobs he finds or hears about.

Equipment: A silver full body plate armor, a silver shield with a white trim, and a silver longsword with a white hilt. (recently crafted his equipment himself)

That's great, and so is the name of his hometown!

In a bit, I'll post some pages from Ryuutama on character creation. The main thing is deciding on our characters' starting stats, and skills.

CoconutLeaves said:
are we starting already? I thought we were still in the planning stage.
No, you're right. We're still planning.

Creating a new character using Ryuutama's system is fairly simple and interesting. I've written a simplified version below. Lemme know what you think.

First, you pick a 'Class'. This can be anything for our purposes.

(Ryuutama only has 7 broad classes, but we can make whatever we want, and mix and match skills from different classes. I'll post class skills in a separate post. If you have a skill you want to give your character that's not on the list, go ahead and suggest it. I wanna keep this flexible.)

Second, you pick a 'Type'. There are 3 types: Attack, Technical, and Magic. They affect your HP, Attack damage, and other aspects. I'll elaborate on 'terms' in the last section

Attack

specializes in combat and using weapons.

Max HP + 4

+ 1 bonus to damage rolls during combat

Gains 1 more 'Mastered Weapon'

Technical

can quickly assess a situation and find clever ways to solve problems.

Gains +1 bonus to any 'check' when using Concentration.

+ 1 bonus to 'Initiative' checks in combat.

+ 3 to Carrying Capacity

And

Magic

enables the use of various types of magic.

Max MP + 4

Acquires 2 Incantation spells per level

Acquire 'Seasonal Magic'

Third, you determine 'Starting Ability Scores'.

You have 24 points to spend on 4 values

:

Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Spirit

, abbreviated as [sTR], [DEX], [iNT], and [sPI]. Your character's Ability Score has to be an even number (i.e. 2, 4, 6, or 8).

[sTR] represents physical power, stamina, and endurance.

[DEX] represents speed, nimbleness, and lightness of foot.

[iNT] represents power of judgment, thought, and memory.

[sPI] represents focus, bravery, and strength of conviction.

Your Ability Score determines which type of dice you roll when that stat comes into play. e.g. A character with [sTR:6] rolls a 6 sided die.

Here are examples of how Scores can be distributed into the 4 values. These are not the only combinations of course.

A jack of all trades who's average in all areas would be: 6 6 6 6

A standard character might be 4 6 6 8

And a specialized character might be 4 4 8 8

Your Ability Scores determines your max HP, MP, and Carrying Capacity.

HP = [sTR] x 2

MP = [sP] x 2

Carrying Capacity = [sTR] + 3

Fourth, you choose a mastered weapon. Weapons fall into 6 categories, and determine accuracy and damage.

One-handed Light Blade: dagger, short sword, wakizashi, etc.

Accuracy: [Dex + INT] + 1

Damage: [iNT] - 1

Blade: broadsword, rapier, katana, etc.

Accuracy: [DEX + STR]

Damage: [sTR]

Polearm: longspear, trident, lance, etc.

Accuracy: [sTR + STR]

Damage: [sTR] + 1

Axe: battleaxe, greataxe, etc.

Accuracy: [sTR + STR] - 1

Damage: [sTR]

Bow: shortbow, longbow, crossbow, etc.

Accuracy: [iNT + DEX] - 2

Damage: [DEX]

Unarmed: unarmed combat, using a stick, etc.

Accuracy: [DEX + STR]

Damage: [sTR] - 2 or [sTR] - 1 when using an improvised weapon

That's it mainly! The rest is just writing your character's story and details, such as a signature item.

Finally, here are some terms that are referenced.

Concentration

is an action your character can perform to give your character an advantage in a situation. Specifically, it gives a +1 to any 'Check' for Initiative, damage, etc. Concentration costs 1/2 of your current MP or 1 Fumble point (Originally, this was "and".)

Fumble

happens when both dice end up rolling a 1. While it means your character failed miserably at whatever they were doing, you gain a Fumble point you can spend on Concentration later. In one turn, you can use Concentration, and spend a Fumble point for a +2 bonus. If you're a Technical type, you can gain up to +3.

Critical

is the opposite of Fumble, and happens when both dice roll the highest value (e.g. 6 on a 6 sided die, 4 on a 4 sided die, etc.).

Initiative

happens at the start of combat. All characters roll 2 dices for [DEX + INT]. Whoever has the highest Initiative goes first, then the second highest, and so on.

Carrying Capacity

is how much your character can carry. For simplicity's sake, this'll count only for items for use in battle, or a recovered artifact on quests.

Size 1 items fit in the palm of your hand.

Size 3 items can be held with one hand.

And Size 5 items must be held with both hands.

Misc. Notes to self:

pg 52 for Type

pg 53 for Acquiring Magic

pg 91 for Check

Hmmm interesting, I wonder how mixing melee and magic (like Mir and Zeke) is gonna be set up. And, is this gonna be a dice rolling rp? Well the only reason I ask is because I can't roll at work hehe

"DICE"[/URL] on the top menu? I tried it earlier to make sure it'll work for us.

I want to keep this a primarily non-dice rolling rp, I think, and keep dice rolling confined to combat, and certain parts of travelling, such as when facing a hazardous bridge. A full dice rolling rp is just TOO MUCH WORK FOR EVERYONE involved. @_@

Edit: I put in a simple system cause I think a rp can get boring if we just write everything that'll happen, and there's no uncertainty or variability. But lemme know if it's too restrictive. I'll accept all kinds of things that can affect the outcome of a roll if you write it into the story.

Well I guess I could always download a dice app if the chance happens and I get to rp on lunch or something.

I'm actually having second thoughts about dice rolling so it might not actually get implemented after all. >_>

Let's plan something for the rp though, like the starting town, early scenarios, and how our characters meet.
