Yesssss <3 <3 <3

I just binge watched the entire TV series because it was just too exciting, and after a brief moment of elation, I was then deeply sad that there was no more.

Aside from anything else, it's so goddamn pretty. The hair, the costumes, the actors, the scenery. But it's not just eye candy. Although there is a lot of eye candy. But the characters and plot are also great.

I started reading the novel translation online but I haven't got very far yet... and also started to read the webcomic.

there are two spin-off movies, the 2nd one just came out this week.
One is about Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui, 'The Living Dead' and the other one is about Nie Huaisang and Nie Mingjue, 'The Fatal Journey'.

Webcomic is not complete yet and it follows the novel pretty closely. So you can read the novel first.
The animation has two seasons so far and is not complete yet as well.

There is also audio drama which is also complely translated and it's amazingly good. And probably the closest adaptation to the novel.

I heard about the movies! I wonder if they will be on Netflix too or I need to raid the internet?
Both of those subjects sound fun. Wen Ning and Sizhui are so cute, but also ... I know people will think this is weird but Nie Mingjue is strangely hot and I have a little crush on him despite all the more exceptionally beautiful characters. XD

I'm not enjoying the comic that much tbh, and I'm sure it's mainly to do with the actors being so beautiful that the comic sort of pales in comparison. I love comics so I will probably read it, but I will read the novel first. :) Go back to the original source.

What is your favourite version? And why?

No idea about Netflix, but they are available on the internet and there are legal sources with english subtitles already.

Have you seen Nie Mingjue in the animation??? XD

Yeah I'd recommend the novel first either way.
The story is different from Untamed in some points, but not going to spoil.

What is your favourite version? And why?
The novel, because it's the source. And I just liked it overall. A detective story with awesome protagonists and a lot of great side characters.
And maybe the animation? Because I started with the animation and it was so good that I went to read the novel to find out what's next, but it wasn't fully translated yet XD Although by the time I got to last chapters it was already completed lol Basically, the animation is the thing to blame for dragging me into this XD
But it's really hard to say. I love them all, they're all unique in their own way.
Maybe I'm less so into the comic though since I didn't read much of it, I'd prefer to do it when it's complete.

Ohhh I've seen a picture of him in the anime now. Definitely lacking the facial hair and lovely braids that I appreciate from live action Nie Mingjue, but similar energy.

Things I liked about The Untamed, aside from the extreme prettiness of everything and everyone:

The clans/sects with their unique aesthetics and different specialisms. It reminded me a little of ATLA, but subtler.
The characters had complex personalities and realistic, complicated relationships. WWX and his adoptive siblings were just ... perfect siblings.
Unpredictable storyline. OK, sometimes it was hard to keep track of what was happening, but mostly it was really exciting waiting to see what would happen next.
Incredible eye-acting from Lan Wangji. He had a stoic face but you could tell everything that was going on behind it in really subtle ways.
Chemistry between the two main leads.
A main character who you are rooting for (despite being kind of a douche sometimes) who has good intentions but makes terrible decisions, yet all of it seems completely in character.
Intelligent characters in general.
Cool women characters. Shame that they ALL DIED.
Music that creates powerful magical effects both good and bad. Such an awesome trope.
Wrapping up almost everything in a way that was very satisfying. The things not wrapped up were good thinking points later, rather than answers you needed to have. For example, what exactly went on in the three months that WWX was in the Burial Mounds.

YES YES THE CHARACTERS <3
the main ones, the side ones, they're all complex and interesting to follow.

He really nailed it. He has so little lines but can say so much with eyes.

Shame that they ALL DIED.
not ALL. there is MIANMIAN! She is important!
Well, tbh the Untamed had female characters stand out more than the original source. But they were cool and important in all adaptations.

Music that creates powerful magical effects both good and bad. Such an awesome trope.
indeed. The soundtracks are available on Spotify and iTunes/Google play now.
I'm learning to play some songs on the flute too XD Love them.

For example, what exactly went on in the three months that WWX was in the Burial Mounds.
Can only imagine, but nothing good. I was just reading some theory about it today.

I agree with everything you said lol
And now multiply all that for every adaptation. While they all follow the same plot, each of them adds something unique.

I'm into this for a year or so (only!) but it still feels as fresh as when I just got into it.

I have to say I really enjoyed it when they met Mianmian again. XD

Ohhh now I want to hear you play.

yes, and how they met her too was fun. XD

Maybe when I learn better lol I only started flute 5 months ago and while I have some progress it's not very good yet. But I'm learning main theme from Untamed anyway XD

If it doesn't come out right yet, claim that you're playing the version that sounds "really awful" from Episode 2. I mean, it sounded great to me but the Lan boys seemed to hate it.

I watched the first two episodes again because I had a feeling there was lots of stuff I didn't remember because I had no idea who any of the characters were before it went into flashback, and lo, I was correct. It was very enlightening. XD

good idea. I'll use that excuse from now on! XD

yeah I get what you mean. Re-watching first episodes made more sense when I knew the characters (and remembered their names lol).

Yeah, it seems much more like you care about what is happening, because you understand the significance, and easier when you know their faces better.

It was so confusing at first when they went to Cloud Recesses in the flashback and literally everybody had the same outfit and hairstyle, and there were loads of new characters, and you had to remember them all. XD

I still don't get whether WWX is supposed to look the same when he is reincarnated in Mo's body as he did when he was alive. Sometimes they make you think he does, and that's why he needs a mask, and other times... not.

in the novel it was mentioned that he didn't look the same, but was still good-looking XD

I think he was wearing the mask in the drama because he pretended to be 'insane', since Mo XuanYu was kinda demented at that time. In the novel and animation, Mo XuanYu was wearing weird makeup. They probably didn't do that in the drama for aesthetic reasons so he was wearing the mask instead.
And they wouldn't change the lead actor because the story takes place in the past and present for significant amount of time XD

The mask was definitely a good choice. The make-up would have been much harder to remove and put on for when the audience needed to see his face.

Ohh as long as he's still good-looking. XD That's the main thing.

I wonder where Mo XuanYu went when his body was taken over?

XDDD In the animation he was also a bit shorter than original body.

I believe he just disappeared. Because he sacrificed his soul entirely for the ritual.

Xiao Zhan is SIX FOOT. D: I heard that's why they changed his hairstyle and also gave Lan Wangji a very high topknot thing. XD

Does that mean WWX can just keep his body forever as long as he doesn't complete the revenge? :/

yes, pretty much XD
and now I'm struggling with Lan Wangji's hairstyle for cosplay. animation hairstyle was so much simpler.

He had to complete revenge to stay in the body. If he didn't complete he would have died too.

When does he complete it? It is it complete when Madam Mo, Master Mo and the dickish cousin get offed? Because it's not really mentioned after the first episode except much later when he looks at his arm and still has one of the marks.

omg Ultimate cosplay!! Those lovely hair jewelleries he has! Are you going to make them?! I love all the hairstyles so much.

I don't remember exactly what they showed in the series, but Madam Mo, Master Mo, their son and one of the servants who was abusing him too. Four people.

I bought one of them (the one he used in the 'past' sequence) and will make the other (from 'present') because one version is not enough. can't be too much of Lan Wangji. but still idk what to do with the hairstyle lol I'll think about it later. I doubt I'll cosplay anything this year given the current situation.

Oh yeah the servant too. Why did he still have the cut later?

Wouldn't you need to get one of those styling blocks and then pin the hair to it? I ain't no expert though. I don't know what I'm talking about. XD

All the more time to perfect it for next year. :3 (And grow your hair extremely long.)

I don't know XD Maybe they forgot about it lol The ritual was supposed to be complete by the time he left the Mo village.

yeah most likely but I didn't think it through yet. I'm not in a hurry. Still learning to play guqin for the most authentic experience XD
I'll just use a wig. No way my hair would be so beautiful lol

It's too perfect. :3 Is it hard to learn?

Do you have anyone to cosplay WWX with you? Or Sizhui?

yes, very 😭 I'm not nearly close to playing the Untamed theme song and don't even expect to play it until next year or later. But I really enjoy playing guqin. it's very hard but also very rewarding. And besides, I just love Chinese traditional music, so the efforts are not wasted at all.

Not at the moment. Who knows what will happen next year.

Walk around with a cabbage patch doll strapped to your leg and call it Yuan.
