Empty Ouroboros

The Den Of Snakes and Soldiers

"Conflict and Strife are Eternal. Empty of The Emotion, Given Meaning By Us. Just as The Serpent Devours Its Tail, So does Conflict Devours The Strife of The Past; To Kindle Our Passions"

Summary and Group Ideals

   Summary:

     Empty Ouroboros is a mercenary group run by multiple handlers, however there a two true captains of the group that call the group their own, but reasons for doing so is what separates the smaller demographics within the group. They range from Anahit Faithful, soldiers who have been cast away by their military and kingdoms in foreign lands, sailors and pirates who seek fortune and battle-born glory, and last but not least a wide range of slaves who have been freed from their bondage and seek to gain a good death in battle. The handler previous mentioned however are more along the lines of clergymen and women who follow the "true" captains. Intermediaries between employers, recruitment, religious induction, and day to day business such as merchant and profit works.

The Anahit Faithful are the original group that one of the leaders banded together after his departure from his old Clergy. He and his cohort took their own flock, with their own ideals, and sought to reap the divine benefit of Anahit's blessing in strife, battle, and conflict. They believe that through strife and conflict does true enlightenment and divinity can be seen. This echelon is built by warrior-scholars. Cunning, Resourceful, and blessed with techniques that are privy to close followers of Anahit. They command a majority of the forces with ferocity and devicive planning. They would raze lands in order enjoy the prospect of war.

Some personally fight on the front lines, like the pseudo-captain and religious leader: Aloysius Amon-Apophis. A man whose bloody fists and ravenous fighting style compare to his cunning and manipulating words aplenty. Another front-line commander is Vritra Dahomey  a gigantic Nomasdae man with a quiet demeanor who closely follows the word of Anahit. Vritra is said to be the only one who can fight on par with Aloysius, or so believed. However if the feats of his strength are true he is a force to be reckoned with. A rather popular rumor is that Vritra's rage is tough to coax out, however on soldier did--and end up with sternum being ripped out by Vritra's bare-hand.

Vritra is not as unorthodox as Aloysius, but cunning and a great sense of battle. He is a worthy strategist garnishes heavy respect from both Religious and the other demographics along with his opponents on the field.

The majority of the group are a mixed bag of young and old and men and women. (Although women are mostly found in the upper rungs of this band of mercenaries, they rarely appear below the religious side of the group).

The group is also viewed in an unsavory light due to their practice of "Merit". Merit within the group is gained for each kill they make on the battlefield. Due to often the lack of proof one has in claiming a kill by word alone--the forces are encourage to take the tongue from their fallen foe. A gruesome rite of worthiness is held after a battle as the men go about cutting out the tongues of their foes; placing the muscles on keyrings and charm necklaces. Some even keep certain tongues of "value", such as nobles or commanders as proof of their accomplishment. Each tongue has an exchange rate, thus for a certain amount of tongues one is paid an amount corresponding to it.  This little game is often popular with the more unsavory members of the group. Another aspect to this "individual merit" law with the group is personalize wounds and ammo being used. Arrows with bits of cloth or specialize weapons that leave distinct (and often brutal) gashes, slashes, hacks, and flays.

  With each body they drop the higher their payment, rank and standing within the group becomes. This Merit is often what chooses who's socially the top dog and get to make choices and decisions for places to go and what tavern they head to. Often it is menial things that affect very little, but when merit decides what spoils someone reaps or what woman (or man) a soldier gets to pick, the idea of merit raises in value. However for those with no merit at all is a damning experience,  and one that Aloysius find proving towards Anahit's desire for conflict, strife, and adversity.

 Much like how Aloysius was sent into battle without arms or armor, so are those who have no "Merit". They are sent into the front lines and the forward charge, near naked and disarmed, hoping that they will kill their foes and reap their tongues for the money the desperately need. Certain rules are held for this group of people that Ouroboros calls "The Low Vertebra", and all further the parallels to how Aloysius was once raised.

Rule 1 || All Soldiers within this group are Prohibited from using any arms, armor, or impromptu weapons they can scavenge from our own forces. Weapons and protection can only be used if they are pillaged from a foe or if they can disarm an opponent. Or even a fallen brother. You will killed on the spot if so otherwise

Rule 2 || One must always be on the forward charge. You must be blessed to face the Rite of passage for Anahit. If you are injured or broken no man from the force may assist you. You will be killed on the spot if so

Rule 3 || You must bring at least 5 tongues in order to escape execution. If you attempt to leave the group you will be killed on the spot.

Rule 4 || You are consider less than human during this time, as such any soldier (be it ours or our foe) can kill you without repercussion. Also you tongue can also be collected.

    Interesting Facts:

 •      Some very special few have been taught the same martial arts technique used by Aloysius and (rumored) Vritra. This fighting style's proliferation within the group is not expansive and seems to be very carefully chosen. Some believe that the reason Aloysius insists on teaching his men this art is so that he can fight greater opponents.

 •     The group's name hails from a concept once taught at the clergy Aloysius and Vritra attended during their younger years. It describes that, despite conflict and strife being aspects of change and chaotic motion forward, these ideas are perhaps set in their own cycle that changes the world around it.

 •    Members often have circles, snakes, reptiles, or dragon iconography on their body. Why is this a practice? It is currently unknown, but perhaps it is to show the loyalty

Mercenary Statistics and Composition

"The Spine of the Snake is What gives It Structure. Each Important. Ultimately All The Same Role. To Keep All That Is What It Is"

Composition: The majority of the force is a mixture of Kildran and Nomasdae. Very rarely is there a T'Odis, if any, and less rare--but still rare in some aspects are Parshumian who hail from old wars wage by T'Odis and Parshum. The Anahit faithful is a Nomasdae-based group, very rarely outside that boundary--however some can be inducted into it. The Anahit Faithful are not greater than any other soldier, but most of them preach and give guidance towards the band as a whole. Most of the group believes in at least a form of Anahit--some are either apathetic, atheists, or a undefined amount of religious sects.

The Anahit Faithful are more or less Aloysius and Vritra's personal guard and operatives, along with old friends and scholars. They usually impose the rules and doctrines of the mercenary band. Along with recon and propagating the groups name in order to gain new members.  Many young Nomasdae join due to this as Anahit is more along the lines of their tastes. Enticing them to prove themselves and even become experts in the art of battle. Many arrogant children don't survive and it doesn't seem to bother a man like Aloysius. Vritra shows more reverence to their efforts, but is ultimately saddened that they couldn't not be reborn through war.

      || Total Size of Forces | Average ||

 Approximately nearing 250 men. 30 or so women. (Whether or not these are comfort women or actually soldiers depends on if they are feeling extra cruel that day--Though Aloysius is disgusted by the idea of rape as a false conquest without any true passion behind it, he does force all that follow the group to fight. Vritra is actually known to enforce  this ideal, as Aloysius tends to Shepard from far away)

    || Threat Level // Expertise |  Dangerous / Advance or Expert  ||

     The harsh training and zealotry of some members breeds a survival of the fittest mentality. The weak are purged and ultimately the end product is that only the strong survive within the group. However to Aloysius's pleasure the cunning and resourceful also prevail--though those who take advantage of the group themselves do not last long. The group is comprised those adept in surviving and battle. Very little diplomacy and refinement is witness. Though structure from some Anahit Faithful prove useful. And through the Merit system an idea of classicism and social Darwinism take helm as well for some members.

    The commanders and leaders are a mixture of what Aloysius finds true Anahit followers should aspire to be. Men and women who not only can destroy their foes on the field of battle, but understand how to survive and how to outright end a foe.

    The group adheres to no single means of fighting (beyond the punishment of the Low Vertebrae), ranging for general ground troops, archers. and cavalry. However when it comes to close quarters combat they are not to be reckoned with. Their skill and outright survivability allows them to withstand extremely harsh bat

The Painted Snakes Collective

Painted Snakes Banner.jpg

Author's note: I, Andolf Hawke, half-brother to Gideon Hawke, have been given the liberty to write the sober booklet that is the brief history of the Painted Snakes Collective and summaries of its subsidiary Companies. My attempt is to write this booklet in an objective manner as to educate others on this Mercenary group but not attempt to fill one's head with propaganda.

The Painted Snakes Collective was a group of mercenary companies which adopted Snakes into their company names and worked together for the benefit of the Collective and its Companies. It was found by two childhood friends Elviron Tarweld and Gideon Hawke, more about them below. The Collective has existed relatively short, 21 years, but in that period of time managed to make a name for itself and achieve great wealth before being disbanded in 365 when all the Companies were either destroyed, settled down for lands and titles or decided to continue on their own after the Fourth Kildran Civil War came to a close. The Collective is now nothing more than a name written in the pages of Kildran history and a memory for those who fought in the Fourth Kildran Civil War on both sides with mixed feelings. The Collective never had a leader above the Company Captains and decisions for the entire Collective were made in a council of the Captains who had to be unanimous in their votes. The Collective had 10 Companies with about 12.000 men at its apex listed in chronological order (note that the number of men at their apex includes recruits and support personnel like camp followers and medics):
<- Golden Snake Company (Elviron Tarweld, 344-363) apex: 1.600 men ->

<- Crimson Snake Company (Gideon Hawke, 344-365) apex: 2.000 men ->

<- Fallen Snake Company (Eren Flynt, 347-363) apex: 1.400 men ->

<- Common Snake Company (Konnuk(d), 347-361) apex: 1.400 men ->

<- Burned Snake Company (Irvan Tai(d), 353-365) apex: 800 men ->

<- White Snake Company (Yetin Froosh(d), 353-362) apex: 500 men ->

<- Tainted Snake Company (Karm Il-Karg, 353-365) apex: 1.200 men ->

<- Noble Snake Company (Jaron Penkalen, 358-365) apex: 1.000 men ->

<- Bleeding Snake Company (Amelia Cairne, 358-365) apex: 1.100 women ->

<- Black Snake Company (Damos Kitiades, 358-present) apex: 900 men ->

((Old version of the faction profile))

In the year 344 of the Kildran calendar Elviron Tarweld and Gideon Hawke founded the Painted Snakes Companies with funds and troops gifted to them by their noble families. Elviron would lead the Golden Snakes and Gideon would lead the Crimson Snakes. The early years were mainly filled with growing their numbers, experience, equipment and contracts. In 347 they allowed two more divisions to be formed and their commanders to join them as equal. Eren Flynt, a bandit leader and his men who have turned from the life of crime to fight as the Fallen Snakes and Konnuk, a commoner and his recently disbanded militia who joined the Companies as the Common Snakes. Grown to four divisions the Painted Snakes Companies were gaining name and fame among their peers and received better contracts. They grew in numbers again and in 353 three more divisions were formed with three new commanders. The Burned Snakes under leadership of Irvan Tai from Indoria, the White Snakes under leadership of Yetin Froosh from T'Odis and the Tainted Snakes under leadership of Karm Il-Karg from Parshum. The seven divisions grew their numbers and skill until they outmatched a few of the older Companies from around Zeldwa and faced bitter rivalry from those companies. In 358 the final acquisition of three more divisions happens. The Royal Snakes join under leadership of Jaron Penkalen who is a distant cousin of king Anthony II and 41st in the line of succession with a large force of commoners. The Bleeding Snakes join under Amelia Cairne and only consists of warrior women who could easily pass for Roadalians. The Black Snakes joined under leadership of Damos Kitiades consisting mostly of commoners, bastards and a handful of poachers and bandits. Now with ten commanders and ten divisions under them the Painted Snakes Companies were a force to be reckoned with on the mercenary market and had a few good contracts in the years that followed until their biggest contract fell right in their lap.

361: King Anthony II was dead, likely poisoned and both the Queen and the Crown prince accused each other of the murder. Opinions about the matter were divided among the commanders until Jaron Penkalen very vocally threw his support behind the Queen and compelled the others to trust him when he said that he knew that the Queen would've never harmed the man she loved. They moved towards the capital and were met halfway by a messenger of the Queen calling them to support her in exchange for a large reward. The Painted Snakes Companies arrived in Kein when the battle between the Black Talon Mercenaries and the Royal Army had just ended. They quickly learned how many Companies the Queen had hired and formally offered her services before joining forces with the Black Talons in the Allied Mercenary Forces and engaging the Kildran Royal Army in the 'Battle of Ozryn'. During this battle under the leadership of the Black Talons they fought hard and then the 'Black Charge' happened, a force of Black Snakes and Black Talons with Damos Kitiades at the front forced their way through the Royal Army's lines and completely shattered it which gave the rest of the Mercenary forces the opening they needed to turn the battle in a crushing defeat for the Kildran Royal Army. After this battle the tactic was initiated several more times and earned Damos Kitiades the title 'Breaker of Lines'. During the first year of conflict Konnuk and half his command staff perished in battle and the Common Snakes were disbanded and the remaining soldiers spread across the other divisions to make up for casualties.

362: After several minor skirmishes the Painted Snakes Companies participated in the Battle of Ocean's Wake with reasonable success. An attempt by the White Snakes and the Tainted Snakes to cut off the retreat of the Prince and his forces met with disaster resulting in the destruction of the White Snakes and the routing of the Tainted Snakes. The Fallen Snakes were redirected to fight bandit attacks on supply lines. Effectively down to 6 division the Painted Snakes had to regroup and recuperate which allowed the enemy some respite as well which made it possible for them to successfully retaliate in the next year. Near the end of the year most of the Tainted Snakes had regrouped and returned to the fray together with their leader thus putting the fighting strength up to seven divisions.

363: The Painted Snakes Companies fought more skirmishes with the Royal Kildran Army throughout most of the year and tried to stop raids on trade caravans without much success. The Golden Snakes, the Crimson Snakes and the Bleeding Snakes moved to reinforce General Artimendes Gilgrend's forces when on the way there the Golden Snakes turned on their fellow Painted Snakes since Elviron Tarweld was bribed and coerced by his family and others loyal to the Prince to turn coat. The Golden Snakes were defeated easily since most of the force didn't feel like betraying their comrades but Elviron Tarweld managed to escape and join his kin on the side of the Prince. After the bloody distraction the three divisions arrived at their destination only to find out that in their delay the army of the General had been attacked and the General had been slain. The Golden Snakes followed Kael Gilgrend in his quest to get revenge for his father and those who survived returned with barely anybody of the command structure still with them, most of them had died or deserted. The Golden Snakes were disbanded and their remaining members spread across the other divisions. The Painted Snakes suffered quite some casualties that year due to military successes of the Prince's forces. The Fallen Snakes fell apart after sustaining too many losses trying to combat bandits and raids from the enemy. At the end of 363 only the Crimson Snakes, the Burned Snakes, the Tainted Snakes, the Royal Snakes, the Bleeding Snakes and the Black Snakes remained.

364: The fighting of the Painted Snakes intensifies as they under the leadership of the Black Talons secure victory after victory and drive the Prince's forces back once more. Nothing of note really happened to the Painted Snakes Companies except for a long list of casualties and new recruits. They did however collectively place a large bounty on Elviron Tarweld's head for his treason to his comrades. Also the Burned Snakes relieved the Kitiades family from a siege that had the inhabitants starving to death.

365: The heaviest and most important battle of the war was coming 'The Battle of Bore's Den' and all the divisions of the Painted Snakes were participating in the Black Talon led force. The battle was long and hard with many casualties on both sides. The Burned Snakes mismanaged some of their firepots and accidentally set the city on fire which cut them off from their comrades and got them slaughtered as they were trapped between rampant fire and the murderous enemy. The Bleeding Snakes saw a chance to strike at the Prince but underestimated the willingness of the enemy forces to protect their Prince and were pushed back with severe casualties. After the battle was over and it became clear that the war was over the Painted Snakes returned to the Queen to receive their reward. When they heard the reward was a title of nobility all the remaining commanders except Damos Kitiades and Amelia Cairne accepted their titles and those of their divisions who wished to could stay with them as their knights or man-at-arms and those who didn't either joined the Black Snakes or went home to their families and help rebuild Kildra. The remains of the Bleeding Snakes reformed themselves and offered their arms to the Queen as an elite all-female order 'Kildra's Sisters of the Sword' in hopes to become her bodyguard and palace guard. Damos Kitiades on the other hand thanked the Queen for her offer but declined and asked rather to have himself and his men paid for their services before they would return to the road in search of more work. He also promised to the Queen to uphold the law in Kildran territory and maintain the law if needed be. Since the Black Snakes were the only remaining Painted Snakes division they continued as the Black Snakes and left the name Painted Snakes to be what it was, a piece of history. At the end of the war Jaron Penkalen was finally able to pay his respects to his deceased cousin in peace before pledging his eternal support to the Queen to help her rebuild Kildra and keep it safe. To this day Elviron Tarweld is still alive and the fourth most wanted man in Kildra.

Kildra's Sisters of the Sword

(other names: Kildran Sword Sisters, Knight Sisters, the Queen's Fists)

The Sisters of the Sword are an all-female military order which answers directly to the Crown (currently Queen Regent Suzanne) and only to the Crown. Most of their members are women from the common populace who'd rather fight as soldiers than becoming meek housewives although exceptions are present. They are known to be fierce in battle and loyal to their last breath but follow a code of honor that prevents them from accepting dishonorable commands. Their primary task is to protect the Queen Regent and her son from harm and assist the Queen Regent in maintaining the peace of Kildra. Their leader is the Sister Maximus and her name is Amelia Cairne. Amelia Cairne was also the leader of the Bleeding Snakes, the precursors of the current order, who fought many battles with unwavering convictions and unknown ferocity.

Amelia Cairne

"We stand here as mothers, wives, daughters and sisters to fight for our motherland instead of letting only our fathers, husbands, sons and brothers fight and die for this country. If you choose to stand in our way we will not hesitate to slaughter you were you stand like the pigs you are." ~Sister Maximus Amelia Cairne prior to the battle of Ozryn.

Order history

The history of the Kildra's Sisters of the Sword order begins in the year 357, a year before the formal founding of the Bleeding Snakes Company, with Amelia Cairne and some other women who wished to fight as an army started a small band of freelancer mercenaries calling themselves the Bleeding Sisters. Among those involved were Karin of Kein, Marie Vollenwald, Amanda Kerwen, Ilisia To'Moon and Ysolde the Maid, most of them still are with the Order as of today. This small group of warrior women got some renown for their furious approach to bandit hunting whilst asking only for supplies from villages as compensation for their services. The Painted Snakes Collective took notice and offered them help with growing their group if they in exchange would join the Collective as the Bleeding Snakes Company. By 358 they had grown large enough to be accepted as a company of the Collective by having more forces than the 500 soldiers minimum.

From 358 onward the women mercenaries now known as the Bleeding Snakes grew in numbers and earned experience from a wide variety of jobs they completed under the Collective. Their equipment status was severely improved as well as soon as they had funds to purchase better gear than rusty chainmails and battered weapons. Through the years leading up to the Fourth Kildran Civil War the company grew to just over 1,000 soldiers strong and Amelia Cairne had befriended Jaron Penkalen (Royal Snakes Company leader), Gideon Hawke (Crimson Snakes Company leader) and Irvan Tai (Burned Snakes Company leader) whilst relations with Damos Kitiades (Black Snakes Company leader) and Yetin Froosh (White Snakes Company leader) were simply cordial. By the time the Fourth Kildran Civil War started and Syler Hazule asked for the Collective's support Amelia Cairne was very firmly in support of the Queen Regent from the get-go as the Collective had their vote over whether or not they were going to join the war on the Queen Regent's side under Syler Hazule's leadership. After half a day of debating they came to an unanimous vote, they would join the war.

After they had joined up with Syler's forces they went on a 4 year campaign to destroy Prince Unger's campaign. The Bleeding Snakes showed ferocity and determination throughout the war without losing their code of honor and had their fair share in bloodshed and casualties on the front lines. Amelia Cairne made very clear to Unger's forces at Ozryn that she and her warrior women weren't playing pretend with swords. Battle after battle they distinguished themselves although their numbers were slowly dropping with every battle they partook in. In 363 the Bleeding Snakes were traveling with the Crimson Snakes and the Golden Snakes to reinforce General Artimendes Gilgrend's forces but along the way the Golden Treason happened, an attempt by the Golden Snakes leaders to turn their men against their comrades. Too bad for Elviron Tarweld and his traitorous officers most of his men didn't feel like fighting their comrades, specially not against the Crimson Snakes and the Bleeding Snakes which caused a mass surrender after some minor clashes. Sadly the Golden Treason bought forces loyal to Unger enough time to ambush General Artimendes Gilgrend and by the time the Bleeding Snakes and the Crimson Snakes arrived it was too late for the general. Afterwards the Bleeding Snakes were sent to reinforce Kein as it was suspected Unger's forces would gain a morale boost and try a risky all-or-nothing attack on the Queen Regent. When the end of 364 came the Bleeding Snakes were called to regroup with the main mercenary force and Amelia Cairne left her most trusted friend and lieutenant Ysolde the Maid with 50 of her most honorable warriors to safeguard the Queen Regent and her son at all costs. Later Amelia Cairne and the rest of the Bleeding Snakes together with what was left of the Collective participated in the battle of Bore's Den and at one point saw a chance to get to Prince Unger and charged the prince's position with full force. The Bleeding Snakes fought like lionesses but in the end had to pull back without the severed head they so craved to offer to the Queen Regent. When the dust settled after the battle of Bore's Den the Bleeding Snakes had lost one third of their remaining forces in the battle. The war was pretty much won after that. When the Bleeding Snakes returned to the capital of Kein they were offered a great reward but denied the reward and instead Amelia Cairne negotiated with the Queen Regent, the royal advisors and Ysolde the Maid to have the Company reorganize into a small military unit which answered only directly to the crown.

After the negotiations were done Amelia Cairne was given some funds and a derelict compound in the capital to house her remaining soldiers and reform them into a true military order. Meanwhile Ysolde the Maid would remain in the Palace as the leader of the 50 women tasked with defending the Queen Regent until the latter would deem the newly formed Royal Guard sufficient enough and dismiss the temporary security detail. Within a year Amelia Cairne had reformed her already disciplined force into the military order that we know today as Kildra's Sisters of the Sword or simply the Sword Sisters. The order had a new banner, clean uniforms, well maintained weapons and armor, clear ranking systems, a completely renovated barracks compound and a small chapel in the compound with women from the clergy providing care for Kein's poor strata. Amelia Cairne had appointed her two lieutenants Karin of Kein and Marie Vollenwald to be the Sisters Superior under her and allowed them to recruit orphaned girls from the streets of Kildra since there weren't near enough Squire Sisters coming from the nobility and they were in high demand. New negotiations with the Queen Regent and the Royal Advisor saw the temporary security detail become an actual force to supplement the Royal Guard in protecting the Royal family and the Palace and saw its numbers rise from 50 warriors to 100 Shieldmaiden Sisters and 100 Squire Sisters to support those Shieldmaiden Sisters, they would only answer directly to the Crown although Ysolde the Maid was appointed as their informal leader to keep things organized for the Queen Regent. After the war there were only 400 members of the group left but through the years they've grown to an astounding number of 2,100 but are now stretched to the limit of what they can maintain in Kein itself and can't expand further since the sexist patriarchal nobility of Kildra don't want to have a permanent presence of the Sword Sisters in their lands. Amelia Cairne is very on edge and always looking out for the Queen Regent and the future King like a hawk.

Order structure and ranks

The Sisters of the Sword have a reasonably easy to understand structure. The top rank is the Sister Maximus who commands the Sisters Superior who in turn command the Knight Sisters who then in turn command the regular Sisters. What follows now is a list of the ranks and what their perks are.

Sister Maximus

The Sister Maximus is the leader of the order and under normal circumstances the only one who directly receives orders from the Queen Regent and the later monarchs. In case the Sister Maximus dies, resigns or deemed unworthy of command it is up to the Queen Regent or the later monarchs to select one of the Sisters Superior as the next Sister Maximus or approve the successor the previous Sister Maximus had in mind. The Sister Maximus usually has a personal retinue of two squires, two shieldmaidens, two scribes and 50 Knight Sisters and their retinues.

Sister Superior

The Sisters Superior can easily be compared to captains of the order, they receive commands from the Sister Maximus or under special circumstances the Queen Regent or the later monarchs and carry those commands out or delegate them to the Knight Sisters under their command. Sisters Superior are promoted to their rank from the rank of Knight Sister by the Sister Maximus with approval of the Queen Regent or the later monarchs. A Sister Superior usually has a personal retinue of one squire, one shieldmaiden, one scribe and 20 Knight Sisters and their retinues.

Knight Sister

The Knight Sisters are the backbone of the order, they serve as lieutenants to their commanding officers and can act as individual agents if needed. They receive order from their commanding officers or those outside the order to whose command they've been assigned. A Knight Sister gains her rank after 6 years service as a Sword Sister or after completing their training as a Squire and is promoted to this rank by their Sister Superior or the Sister Maximus. When they attain their rank they have to swear their loyalty to the Crown (usually in a group with others to spare the Crown time) before they can attain their own retinues and begin their knightly duties. A Knight Sister's personal retinue usually consists of a squire and 10-20 Sword Sisters depending on their veterancy as a Knight Sister.

Sword Sister

Sword Sisters are the foot soldiers of the order and are decently equipped since they are full-time soldiers and not levies. They usually endure a year's worth of heavy training as a recruit before they acquire their rank of Sword Sister and are sent to service. Veteran Sword Sisters usually fill the role of a sergeant under their Knight Sister to increase effectiveness of their unit. A Sword Sister has no retinue but is usually paired with another Sword Sister with whom they always serve in the front line.

Shieldmaiden Sister

The Shieldmaiden Sisters are elite member of the order whom serve as personal bodyguards to the Sister Maximus and the Sisters Superior. The 100 most elite of the Sword Sisters are elevated to the position of Shieldmaiden Sister to serve the Crown as royal guards. It is important not to confuse the Shieldmaiden Sisters with Squires as they are on occasion even better warriors than those they have to protect and usually have a Squire themselves. Shieldmaiden Sisters are usually recruited from the Sword Sisters or the Knights Sisters when they prove themselves in the field of battle time and time again and are loyal to the core. The Shieldmaiden Sister has only a Squire as her personal retinue.

Squire Sister

Squire Sisters are usually girls who are not old enough to be trained as a Sword Sister and are frequently of noble descent. Many an orphan in Kein was saved from the life on the street thanks to the large need for Squires in the order. Squire Sisters' tasks aren't that much different from a regular Squire's tasks, they have to take care of their mentor's equipment, help them in and out of their armors and they have to learn a lot from their mentors. Squire Sisters have one advantage, if they get through their training they're guaranteed to achieve the rank of Knight Sister which can bring prestige to the families of the Squires. A Squire has no personal retinue.

Scribe Sister

Scribe Sisters are members of the order who underwent regular training as Sword Sisters but are also schooled in writing, mathematics and are multilingual in both the spoken and written word. They are rare to find and are only in service to the Sister Maximus and the Sisters Superior and usually never leave their side. Contrary to other scribes around the world and diplomats they can fight and will fight if there is a battle to be fought. Scribe Sisters are usually prime candidates to become Sisters Superior since they're well schooled and have experience with the flow of command. Scribe Sisters don't have personal retinues but do spend plenty of time with Squire Sisters to school them.

Details: The Smiths (or more precisely the Black Smiths) crime family possessed most of the weapon and slave trafficking  networks between Kildra and T'odis. This sophisticated network was composed of underground tunnels, vast bribery of city officials, protection units, kidnapping, assassinating and basically whatever potential opportunities  to facilitate and solidify an unbroken channel in which illegal goods pass through constantly.

The Black Smiths ideology is a feudal-like, master slave themed philosophy. Though  Nomasdae in race, they nevertheless harbor a similar ideology as to those who enslaved them once with the main difference being their indifference to the race of those they enslave. They believe every man and women who is born into this world, as a collective existence, either harbors attributes of a master or those of a slave. Therefore it makes no difference whether you are black and white, your right is what you take and what you "Can" take depends on those attributes.

The Smiths family was wiped out by their rival the RedMight Legions and the leader Arcsidian is known to be dead to all of those who knew him. The RedMight legions scourge of the Smiths began as they exploited a weakness into the Smiths  mansion, at a peace treaty celebration between all rivals. Most of the Smiths guards were killed and were replaced by an enemy soldier. The attack began by executing the remaining guards and assassinating all captains of the rival clans. Similar operations were carried out all across Kildra and near T'Odis as they wiped the competition off the map.
