clawing at scraps, hiding from the very dark itself humans lay in wait. Hoping every night as they went to sleep for revenge as their numbers were slaughtered and their briefs soiled from the very monsters they faced. As the time went by, about 116 years since the first onslaught of attacks from the avatars, humans have reached where they are today.grasping scraps and any who could build they formed cities around the world, hubs of temporary safety. As time went by they grew, people flocked and society learned how to live until the day they could return to the top of the food chain. Nature reclaimed the past around them as they pushed through the areas they could hold.
where you are is in one of three major hubs in North America. You are located admits the runes of Toronto, Canada. While your city has encompassed a portion of the city, much still remains outside your steel walls torn from buildings. outside the walls controlled by the government, plants and avatars run free, overtaking the ruins and lying in wait to attack the city when they get the chance.
while humanities technology has degraded, some still remain. The internet has become an extremely dangerous pile of avatar habitats and thus is extremely maintained and worked on by the government to try and salvage it. Electricity has returned to the City and lights in most areas are never turned off despite the waste. Guards are equipped with guns and assortments on the walls and regulate the law under the governments orders.
food has become a struggle for many years, however, some trading roots mixed with greenhouses have loosened up rations and let for the last 74 years for food to be allowed with restaurants and bakeries. Cars are no longer used inside the city and are only used by solider outside the wall who scavenge for more supplies for the city.
despite humanities success in surviving the beasts who live on their fear, there are many difficulties for those who do not get let into the city. Families are only allowed 2 children each, any more requires a hefty fine. Everyone in the city is required to work if they are outside of schooling, and schooling after high school is very hard to get into to discourage studies.those who are unlucky enough to have not been born in the city or close enough to it when it was born are left with few choices of where to go to. Small settlements exist but are unsafe and prone to attacks by bandits and avatars. The ruins of once great cities and towns still exist, ripe with loot, but many find it hard to survive long on their own.
for those looking to enter cities, they would have an easier time breaking into the highly defended walls. Only those who have required skills are allowed in, those like children or elders are not allowed in unless they have someone with skills to add them as one of their 2 family members when they enter. They do not want sick people or anyone with a disability unless they have some other form of use to the city. This has left many to die by themselves out in the wild.
while the world has downgraded substantially things like class and money still exist. Anyone who is not a solider or a scholar is most likely poor or living in one of the 'homeless' areas. They are usually builders or simple workers who do not offer much to the city. They generally live in small half apartments where they share kitchens and bathrooms with another family. Those who are soldiers are middle class and usually have their own apartment that can fit a family with them if they have them. Some scholars also have these houses as well as merchants can have anywhere from poorer houses than these or expensive houses depending on their merchandise. Those who are doctors, scientists, or anyone who provides an extreme benefit to the city have their own apartments that are far better than the others and can easily fit a family. The richest can have penthouses and huge apartments, these people are usually government workers or scholars who have provided something essential for the existence of the city.
society hates nothing less than avatars. May they be humans turned or animals mutated and formed into monsters, they hate them all. Someone being found out as an avatar is a death sentence. People are ready to blame anyone they can for the state of the world and many have died innocently because society decided that they were guilty. Even still avatars slither their way into society, blending among humans as best they can. No where is truly safe, no matter how thick the walls, how much guns humans make, fear will always exist. And where fear exists, avatars lurk.
when did you become an avatar, shouldn't be more than one or two weeks since the longer you have it the harder it is to resist its control)
