He was already Undead from when you met him (he mentions he is undead and escaped the asylum the first time you meet him). If you don't do the right things (kill the bugs in a shortcut) to save him before you meet him in Lost Izalith, he gets possessed by the bug and attacks you. If you do save him, he doesn't encounter the maggot and rekindles the first flame in his own world after you summon him as a Phantom against Gwyn. If my memory serves me correctly, that is LMAO
