Fantasy Era's End - Return of the Witch

Avatar Arvis

The Last Avatar

When you're a child, it's easy to believe in what can't be explained. The impossible doesn't exist in such black and white terms as it does when we grow older.
I remember as a kid I would create epic fantasies of magic and grandeur in my mind. Always I was a hero willing to leap into danger to save others.
Never did I imagine that one day, those fantasies would become something more...

In a world where science heads the path of humanity's progress, we find a young man living a normal life. Though he no longer dreams of fantasies, his instincts tell him something lays in wait for his future. That realization comes to fruition when by accident or destiny, the young man finds a book in the library. Imprisoned within it for centuries is a witch of great power. Unwittingly unleashing the witch back into the world, the young man allows magic to surge forth once again. With magic slowly returning to the world, creatures long thought myths and legends are stirring. By his actions, the young is granted magical abilities which he must master quickly if he is to survive in the world he changed.

One thing is for sure, the imprisoned witch will be seeking revenge for centuries of torment. What will happen next?

Tyson had come to the library earlier in the day to work on his final project for school. The sounds of San Franciscan traffic could still be heard deep within the library, but only as a low murmur. People moved about, looking for what they needed while others whispered quietly about this and that. Tyson was up on the third floor browsing the books on a short break from his work. The books here seemed so different, older and more random than the ones down below. Their scents of musk and age were very prominent.

His finger trailing along the spines of the books, Tyson read the titles. Most weren't in English, and he could only guess what some of them really were. There was a shook, like static electricity that surprised Tyson as he ran his fingers over a book with no title. The shock causing Tyson to abruptly yank his hand back with a started exclamation. Looking around, Tyson sees that he hasn't garnered attention, and returns his focus to the book. Hesitantly, he reaches forward and touches the book again, muscles tense in anticipation for another shock. It never comes. Curious, Tyson grabs the book and pulls it from the shelf, flipping it over to inspect the back. The book is ancient, the leather faded and worn with no decorations. Tyson doesn't notice the windows near him growing darker as clouds begin to gather unnaturally in the skies above.

Walking to a nearby table, Tyson sits down, and opens the book. As he does, a roar of thunder shakes the library, causing Tyson to look up and out the windows to the dark storm clouds outside. Confused, Tyson returns his eyes to the book. Inside the ink is faded and undoubtedly handwritten. The script flowing with uncanny precision and eloquence. However Tyson cannot make heads or tails of what the writing might mean, as the language is like nothing Tyson has ever seen before. Strange pictographs are drawn on some of the pages but lend no answers to what Tyson might be looking at. Tyson felt a bout of dizziness overwhelm him, and he braced himself against the table, closing is eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose with his finger. When the dizziness has passed, Tyson opens his eyes to see the words and symbols in the book changing. Flowing like wet ink, the writing slowing becomes readable.

A small verse be is the first thing that Tyson sees, and it fills his mind. Suddenly there is a pounding in his chest as he looks at the verse, and electricity seems to flow through his body causing every nerve ending to ache. A strange whispering starts behind him, almost like a forgotten song trying to come to the forefront of his mind. The whispering grows stronger and becomes a chant, echoing around him until it becomes an ocean of noise. Tyson wants to cover his ears but he can't move his body at all. Then as if someone else were in control of his body, his mouth starts forming words he had never heard before, his voice powerful and deeper than he had ever heard it.

Thunder rumbles the library even as lightning strikes from the black clouds in the skies above. Still Tyson can't stop speaking, and then the words he couldn't understand change to English. "Dreadful darkness, hear my cry. Bring back one, who cannot die. Let the witch who perished here, live again and reappear!" Then the writing on the book begins to glow so brightly that Tyson has to shut his eyes or risk going blind. That is when he notices he can move his body once again!

1 - Now that Tyson can move his body, he should run away! Maybe to a mental hospital, as he is clearly crazy!!
2 - Try and close the glowing book! Maybe that might do something!
