Name: Yi Soo Jin (surname subject to change, cuz I am uncreative and just went with the family name of the monarchs for the early Joseon dynasty.)
Role: Fifth Concubine of Emperor Zhang Liwei , Princess of Hangyeol and last known survivor of the Gyeol royal family
Age: 23 (subject to change depending on age of other characters, as I ideally want her between the ages of the two princesses)
Sexuality: Heterosexual, mostly.
I say 'mostly' because I do not think it has ever crossed her mind that she might be attracted to women, anymore than she has ever thought about if she is attracted to men. Genuine romance and attraction is not something that factors into her consideration of her life, though I think that she would not turn away a romantic or sexual gesture from a woman if she thought it might be to her advantage.
Nationality: Hangyeol. She grew up in Ocheon as a child, traveled throughout Hangyeol as a teen, and has spent the last four years living in Chiuming.

She was a princess, yes, but she was also no one of much importance. Her childhood was idyllic, generally speaking. When Piaolang invaded, it became less so. She saw less of her father, and her older brothers no longer had time for her, either. The construction of the new garden she had been so excited about was postponed indefinitely. The food on her table was still abundant and filling, but there was little not grown within Hangyeol's own borders. She didn't get the new dresses she'd been hoping for.
Soo Jin was observant enough to notice these little things, and wise enough to know they meant something. But she was also polite enough to know she wasn't meant to ask- She wishes she had. Maybe, if she'd known how bad things really were outside the isolated bubble of palace life, she might have been more prepared.
Not that there is much that can prepare a 13 year old girl for being smuggled out of her own home in the dead of night, because her father and her uncle and her brothers have been murdered.
Life in hiding was hard for Soo Jin, but she tried not to complain. The secrecy, the traveling, the time away from her sisters- She knew the people who asked these things of her were risking far more themselves to keep her safe.
Her years in hiding were her true time as Gyeong princess. As a child, her visits through the city, as well as her precocious and generous nature had made her popular with the citizens she interacted with. But visiting citizens is very different from living among them. In the six years she spent moving about the country, Soo Jin learned more about her country and her people than she ever would have behind the safety of palace walls.
She learned which roads and routes were passable, and if the danger was in the weather or the multitude of ambush locations. She learned which crops grow best in certain types of soil, and when to start worrying after the rain in earnest. She learned the cost of wares in a merchant's shop, and what caused the prices to fluctuate.
She learned how to talk to people, and when to hold her tongue. How to be invisible in the light of day on a busy street, but inspire hope behind the shadow of a closed door. She learned that when her other family could not be reached, men twice her age who had spilled more blood than she had in her body- They would look to her for the final approval of their plans. She learned to give it and when to withhold it, though not without mistakes. She learned that her mistakes had a cost, measured in lives as well as coins.
Soo Jin learned that no matter how much you wanted to trust someone, you shouldn't. No matter how much you hope for something, doesn't mean it will come true. She'd been meant to be reunited with her sisters, all of them together at last, and instead they were dead. Her own location had certainly been compromised. They would come for her next. She would be killed, to stave off the danger she represented.
So, she would be no danger.
They found her weeping, bound and gagged, locked inside the pantry storeroom of the wealthy trader who'd been hiding her.
What a relief it had been, she told them later, to hear the imperial guard was in the city. At last, her nightmare could be over. Of course she'd gone along with it at first, she admitted tearfully. Her older sister had said that she had too, and she just wanted people to be happy with her, what was so wrong with that?
But it had been six years, six years of her hiding and her country fighting, and it was awful, just awful, so many people dead, wasn't it time for it to be over? And the Emperor just wanted peace, too, didn't he?
In front of his soldiers, she had sniffled, but she was careful not to look too pitiable during her audience with the Emperor himself. She kept it to a few tears- She knew she was pretty, and had no desire to ruin that advantage. Let him think her beautiful, but silly. Malleable, maybe. And useful.
Soo Jin could help encourage that peace, the Emperor suggested. If she were to become a proper Piaoliang lady, a model citizen of the Yazhou empire, perhaps her people would follow suit. Of course, she agreed. Nothing would make me happier, she said with gratitude, drying her eyes and looking up at her new savior with adoration. She buried her rage and grief and hatred beneath the facade, but it still burned on.
In the Chiuming Temple, she continued her learning, but this time with books and tutors and endless tests she never knew she was taking. There was always something she had done wrong- She'd put the accent on the wrong syllable when naming the Emperor's dozens of predecessors, used her napkin incorrectly, offended her hypothetical guests by offering unsuitable refreshments. She bit down every retort. How kind of you, she told her critics,
to be watching out for me to be sure I will succeed.
Someday, she would be deemed proficient, Soo Jin reminded herself regularly. She would be married to one of the Emperor's sons, she assumed, so that what was left of the Gyeol royal family would be tied to that of Piaoliang's. The second son, probably, presuming the first son was named heir- They did not need her as a figurehead so badly that they would waste the marriage of an heir on her. Maybe second wife of the heir, but he would need a first wife first.
But neither was publicly announced as heir, nor were there any marriages on the horizon. On the rare occasion she met the Princes, she was as graceful and demure as was possible to be- A son from either of them would be of great advantage to her, she didn't care which. She would even pretend to be pleased to marry the third son if that was what was asked of her, though she didn't think they would stoop to insult her quite so much.
In retrospect, she would have been genuinely glad to marry that idiot.
Soo Jin smiles, when the Emperor visits, and laughs girlishly as needed. She thinks now that this must always have been his plan, and berates herself for thinking she would be lucky enough to share a bed with one of his awful spawn, instead of the odious man himself. And he did not even marry her- Either he is very confident in his rule of the Gyeol people, or he just enjoys humiliating her.
She wonders how difficult it would be to acquire a suitably sharp object, and plunge it into his throat. The physical act would be easy, she knows. But the cost... She cannot risk the repercussive steps that might be taken against her people.
And besides, her isolation in the palace is extreme. She has no idea of the political climate in Chiuming, much less in Yazhou at large. She knows that though Hangyeol no longer fought against the yoke of imperial rule so publicly, there most still be those among who people who resisted. They will need her someday, even as just a figurehead. She has spent most of her life waiting and watching and learning. She can do so a little longer.

Maturity: While able to act highly mature, a mask which Shusui has spent most of his life wearing, he is in truth highly childlike. This is most shown in which of the acceptable pass-times he pursues. Namely, strategic board games such as Xiangqi. While his victories have won him a reputation as a skilled player within the court, the true root cause of his passion for the game is nothing as grand as seeking reputation or developing military skills. He simply enjoys playing games.
Personal Goals: While the goal set for Shusui by his mother Mingxia is the Emperor's throne (a goal that Shusui pursues with the due diligence of a son), Shusui's own highly suppressed desire is simple. A happy life.
Personality: Shusui is defined by his abilities, prodigious as they are. A truly blessed child, Shusui struggled with few things in his childhood. Once his education reached the point where effort was required, he had a few bumps in the road before he subsequently adjusted and continued to struggle with few things. As such, Shusui is a man with a healthy mixture of justified confidence and slightly less justified arrogance. There are few indeed who ever see anything more then an obfuscating smile from him, for that is how he's learned to meet anyone who has not earned his respect.
While his natural abilities and the arrogance/confidence born of them form a large part of him, there is another fruit born of his court life. Namely, his hedonism. The pressures of being told soon after you're born, "One day, you will be Emperor", are no small burden. And for a son of the Emperor, no form of *ahem* stress relief was ever beyond Shusui. Now as an adult, whenever Shusui seeks to unwind he takes his pick of fine wine, fine food, and fine women, as well as whatever else catches his eye. He frequently leaves the palace disguised to enjoy himself, but there are few who rank highly within his father's administration that do not know of his escapades. But they do not speak of them. Were he any less talented, he would be a pariah of the family for his indulgences. But, as long as he continues to perform well in his studies and tasks, his mother and father are content to merely give nothing more then wise lectures rather then true punishments.
The contrast between Shusui of the court and Shusui the tavern goer is striking. For Shusui of the court is dignified, affable, and responsible. Every word spoken must have wisdom in it. Every movement taken by Shusui of the court has thought put into it, for every movement must be a movement that Shusui of the court would make. There is little emotion ever shown, except for a subdued confidence that at times creeps into arrogance. Shusui the tavern goer is informal, boastful, and irresponsible. Shusui the tavern goer speaks whatever comes to mind, and says what he pleases. Shusui the tavern goer, scandal-of-scandals, slouches and furthermore places his elbows upon tables. Shusui the tavern goer rages, laughs uproariously, and even cries.
