INTRO
The Eclipse

It all started with an ordinary eclipse. The sun started to disappear bit by bit until there was but a bright ring shining from behind a circle of darkness. People knew it was coming, the eclipse, but not what followed...

Suddenly the light exploded from behind its cover and washed over the earth like a wave of bright energy. It was something that wasnt supposed to happen and no one saw coming. It caused panic as it started covering the entire planet bit by bit. There were people hit by it all so hard they fell into a coma, some passed out, some were only lightheaded and then there were some that became casualties of the panic and chaos around them.

After the light and world returned to normal people tried to recover. Talk about the eclipse and its results went on for days but eventually died down. Everything went back to normal and people started to shrug off the event as just another anomaly, something odd yet nothing bad either since there didn't seem to be any consequences.

Until there were.

As people started to notice changes in some of the individuals around them fear became a new part of peoples lives. There were some who developed powers, they were feared and hated by those that didn't have any of their own and soon protests and fights broke out on a daily basis. Things went so far that the bigger cities even started banishing those that had powers or arrested them without a reason.

Everything became even more chaotic as Darklings appeared. What people thought was a mutation only those with powers were affected by was changing normal people and animals into something else, something that was closer to being a monster than anything else. Of course those with powers didn't mutate, their powers protected their genes from the mutation (well in most cases, there were some exceptions) but of course, people didn't know that. They started hunting those with powers to banish them out of the cities and the only places they could still live were the now less safe towns or unpopulated and dangerous villages.

Here in one of those towns is where it all begins...

Ethan Abel, on his way to Paxton...
Time: Noon
Season: Summer

? Today, Ethan was feeling rather vain. He was on his way to the town of Paxton, where those of his kind were promised some form of serenity. His travels began from the big city, so he decided to stop by a local diner with his new friend Christian. The audio manipulator was waiting for him outside of the diner, allowing Ethan to use the facilities. Alone in the restroom, he kneeled over the sink, washing water onto his hands before running them through his hair. He looked himself over, a tug playing at both sides of his lips. I'm so grateful I didn't become a Darkling... His thoughts rang in perfect harmony with his soul, though he was brought back to reality as a man entered the restroom. Ethan proceeded to dry his hands, using the damp paper towel to open the door before tossing it. A man with a thick black mustache stopped him before he could make his way outside. His brows were furrowed, and he left little space between the two of them.

"Were you planning on buying anything today?"

"No, I wasn't," began Ethan, stepping away from the man, "I have been traveling. I needed to use your restroom."

This displeased the owner of the diner, his face unchanging, even though nothing kept him from approaching Ethan once more. "I really don't like your kind," he said, unaware of the spit coming from his mouth, "there is a sign outside for a reason."

An overwhelming shock was sent through his entire body, shooting down his spine, and ending in his fingertips. His temperature rose, and his heartbeat became fast and heavy. "You disgusting beast." Ethan lifted his right hand, his sinister gaze averting between his hand and the man several times before he opened his mouth to speak. A spark emitted from his fingertips, though he contained the flame that willed to light. "Tell me why I shouldn't turn your precious diner to nothing but ashes..."

The light from Ethan's tremendous power caught the attention of many people eating, especially the police force. Their instinct caused them to rise, but before they could grab for their guns, Ethan was outside. He grabbed Christian's hand, sprinting for the forest and in the general direction of Paxton.

CHRIS
Chis had a crazy few days behind him and things were only getting worse. On the day of the eclipse, he had been hit with the odd light so hard he didn't know if it was the hangover that caused his headache or the eclipse itself.

Days later he touched a girls arm as they were dancing and his power manifested. He had seen some things he would have rather not. There were some things a person just shouldn't know about someone else. Of course that night ended in disaster as he had to run out of the bar so he wouldn't be arrested or beat up for having a power even if it wasn't an active one.

Just as he got his Psychometry somewhat under control he made a window explode when he was in a fight, apparently he had made it happen with a blast of sound so dense it became an invisible force he controlled (or at the time not controlled to be more precise), it was enough for everyone, even his best friends to shy away from him like he was a monster. All that was the reason he had to run again, this time out of the city he had lived in all his life.

He had contacted his new friend Ethan and they decided to go to Paxton, a town that unlike the bigger cities was inhabited mostly by people with powers. There they would be more or less safe from being hunted or arrested for simply being who they were.

The injustice of it all made him angry to the point he could feel his power stir but he immediately pulled it back in as he waited for Ethan to come out of the diner. It didn't take too long before the guy rushed out of the place, grabbing Chris' hand he started running off towards the woods.

Chris sighed and then chuckled "you did something right? Ah well, we were on the run already anyway." he said as a cop came out of the diner just as they reached the trees.

If you had told Maggie that one day she would be lifting entire tree's over her head, she'd have laughed politely in your face and asked you if you were taking anything. Such prospects never seemed a reality to her. Powers were the product of the wild and vivid imaginations she had late at night while she sang to herself, or listened to a beautiful beat before sleep. Never, ever in her life, however, had she imagined the way she would be torn apart. Both physically, and emotionally. Maggie's journey to Paxton was a long one, considering she came from the major city ? , as humble and rich, to quickly become humble and thriving in her new home. Her days were often filled with work. It got her mind off of her hardships, kept her busy, fit, and let her feel as though she was worth a lot more than others thought. She felt like she could lift skyscrapers when she helped built homes in Paxton. Literally.
Her enhanced strength only grew after the day she continued to break her pencils at university, with every new thing she tried to lift or crush. Only recently had her power begun to meet its threshold. The eclipse had been her down fall and her uprising. Responsible for more heartbreak in a year than she had ever felt previously in her life; but it granted her her strength. She would be damned if she held it against the higher power. Maggie swore to herself she would see it as a gift and not a curse. That she would eradicate darklings, and keep anyone and everyone safe from experiencing what she had to.

For now however, she was sticking to late night watches and tree lifting during the day. Some of the older members of their community had been planning to build a new building, and asked Maggie for her expertise in gathering everything they needed and assembling it. They were lucky to have such resources, even if they were drawing thin. The larger tree's that Maggie pushed over, or watched get cut down, created massive and echoing bangs, something the community cringed at every time. It was a dangerous practice considering the risk of attracting darklings later at night, but with more people moving into the town and need of space, it was a risk they were willing to take. 'Watch out boys!.' Maggie was lucky to have smashed her trunk in half, or she would have been blind to the oblivious boys mucking around in her. They were caught off guard by her voice, but quickly caught on and were out of her way in seconds. No-one wanted to get hit in the head with a trunk. Let alone her's. Maggie had a kind and lighthearted reputation around the camp, but plenty had also seen her bouts of anger get the better of her. 'Thankyou...', she sing-songed under her breath as she continued down the road for the work site. She had been reduced to a plain black singlet tee and a pair of shorts; she wasnt wearing shoes, her feet didn't suffer unless she stood still for too long. She supposed the hot ground kept her moving. The hot sun made her sweat, and what coated her body glistened in the summer sun. She loved the summer with passion, but if she was going to be honest with herself, she just wanted it to be over. When she reached the site she greeted her friends and carefully lowered the trunk to the ground. Shs brushed off her hands, and thanked god they were on grass before picking up an axe, and getting to work.

James Earl Grey

Red and blue flashed everywhere. Sirens blared loudly, people screamed and cried, darklings utter dying screeches as bullets ripped through them - but he barely heard any of that. He felt deafened and blinded, unable to see or hear anything beyond the rubble of the collapsed building. The potential hundred or so lives lost because.... of him. James stood there numbly, eyes flooded with tears he didn't know he was crying as law enforcement and emergency services brushed past him trying to fix the chaos he'd unleashed. All because he'd been too stubborn, too stupid to listen. To understand. He wasn't a hero. He was nothing. No- perhaps even worse then nothing. His foolish bullheadedness had caused this and those poor innocent people had paid the price for his mistake. It was all just too much.

---
James had stumbled home in a daze to find his parents in front of the tv. His mom clutching a handful of tissues, his father looking grim. Both of their heads snapped in his direction when he entered. The expression in their eyes was unreadable and yet James already felt exposed. Accused. His father was the first to speak. "Tell me you didn't have anything to do with that." James, who'd never had a problem facing his father before, looked away. "James. Tell us you weren't there!" The mans voice rose, anger coloring his tone. James closed his eyes tightly and shook his head, but confirmed his involvement verbally. "I was just trying to help..." It was a childlike excuse even to his own ears.
"You call that helping? Son... people died -"

"I know for fucks sake!"
James roared, cutting his father off mid sentence. His mother yelped involuntarily and the idea that she feared him was almost too much to bear. James flopped down on a seperate couch, a solemn expression marring his features. "Christ, I know." He whispered before he head fell into his hands. An uncomfortable silence followed before his father approached him on the couch. The older man sighed heavily and placed a comforting hand on his eldest son's shoulder. "Listen son. We all love you, your mother, brother and I. But you cannot stay here. The people will be after your head when they find out you're the reason that building came down. It just ain't safe." He knew in his heart his father was right but the thought of leaving everyone and everything behind so suddenly was harrowing. Yet he knew it was what he'd have to do. James nodded his head in silent agreement. He would leave.

---

James came to a halting stop mid jog, placing his hands on his knees as he bent over to catch his breath. The bad memories of last months incident hitting him like a ton of bricks. He was used to having these random flashbacks, set off by nothing in particular. Just whenever his brain felt like fucking with him really. Which seemed to be quite often as of late. The memories were still fresh, still haunting so he wasn't truly surprised. It was just shitty to have to relive his fuck up over and over again. By contrast though he could remember the eclipse vividly, he never really recalled the moment. Never really thought about the emergence of his powers either. He knew others who were having a hard time dealing with the change but he had embraced his wholeheartedly. Even attempted to help with some of the chaos that the darklings caused but of course it had gone incredibly poorly. James physically shook his head, attempting to clear his thoughts as he stood upright again.

It was late summer now. Still warm out, nice even. The little hick of a town called Paxton his parents had brought him a bus ticket too was fairly small, populated mostly by others like him and those who were too poor or too sick to travel to the bigger cities. The government had rolled out that decree fairly quickly after everything started. The larger cities were kept for the "normal" people; people like him were forced out to fend for themselves. Or killed if they refused to leave. He shuddered to think of how a lynch mob might have come after him had he not left in time. He just hoped his family was ok as he hadn't heard directly from them since leaving. Part of him wondered if that was purposeful on their behalf. Maybe they had cut ties with him completely.

Either way Paxton had welcomed him with open arms and immediately put him to work on the watch and guard teams. He felt good doing those things, they made him feel useful. Helpful. He was protecting the people who lived here while integrating himself into a new type of community. As far as he was concerned it was a win-win situation for him. James continued on his way, pulling lightly at his grey cotton t-shirt that was beginning to stick to his skin. The heat wasn't too bad but he knew it'd get worse once he started working. He'd been asked to assist the construction team with some heavy lifting as they prepared new homes for the influx of people evacuating to Paxton. Always looking for opportunities to show what he could do James had readily agreed. Though upon arriving to the site it seemed someone else already had his job covered. A woman with smooth brown skin hefted a tree trunk more than double her size in the air with seemingly no effort. It wasn't a surprising sight; he'd heard about her but never had the opportunity to actually meet her. James made his way over as she picked up an ax and began to chop wood.

Not wanting to disrupt her work flow James took to watching her for a moment, impressed by her fluid movements and strength.

Maggie brought her axe down on her first victim, careful to not over do it. If only the axe could take the damage she could. Or if only she had knives for hands. Her strokes were swift and hard, but not hard enough that the tool took a toll. As she continued on for the next few moments, the thought of how easily this could have been avoided if fate granted them a stocked hardware store occurred to her. She laughed under her breath at herself and the silly thought before her axe came down again. She was quickly getting through the wood, even with just a few dealt strokes, uncaring of any splinters or the excess pieces at her feet. When she took a moment to wipe sweat from her brow is when she noticed the male to her side. He looked like he took part in his own fair share of labour, a sweat had covered him nicely, and the facial hair over his cheeks and jaw gave him an oddly attractive Hurculean look under the sun. She was sure he was at the site to work, and for a moment she feared he had spoken to her and she had missed it. Taking the chance on him just watching, and waiting, she turned her head towards him fully, a light smile on her lips that revealed her pearly whites. ."Hi~." Maggie had seen him around Paxton but she didn't know his name. She hoped she would now.
Her axe became embedded in the wood beside her again for just a moment. She pulled it out once more to rest it between her hands with a look over the male. "Like what you see?', she teased, her head tilting to the side at him. It wasn't completely uncommon that someone would watch Maggie work, some were quite taken in the past by the massive amounts she hefted around the community. "Sorry if i just took your work load....' She glanced at the wood surrounding the, suddenly feeling very self conscious. She bit her lip. 'Crap. That's what I did, didn't I?' Her expression turned to one of guilt when she met his eyes again. As quickly as her bravado had risen, it came right back down. Typically.

A small grin teased his lips as she laughed softly to herself, seemingly in her own world with nothing but her ax and the wood before her. She was chopping much faster and more efficiently than he or anyone else in the town could. She also likely looked much better doing it than anyone else. She was quite pretty with her mop of black curls and dark eyes beneath thick eyebrows. Certainly the type he'd have approached in the past. Before he knew it he'd already been watching her for more then a few minutes, more then what was passably comfortable but she didn't take notice of him until she took a break from chopping. When she did take notice of him a slow easy smile brightened her face as she greeted him with a cheerful chirp. He smiled in turn and gave his own "Hey~" in response.

She returned to her chopping momentarily, only stopping to tease him for watching her. He didn't miss a beat, grinning wolfishly in response. "Do I." Naturally he very much liked what he saw though he wasn't sure they had the same understanding of it. "If I'd known you would be here I'd have come sooner." He smiled appreciatively at her, unable to keep himself from engaging a light bit of flirtation. Her appearance was lovely and quite frankly he was rather lonely in Paxton. Even her friendship would be an incredibly welcome thing.

He noted a slight change in her demeanor when she realized she might have taken on his workload in his stead. She bit her lip pensively which some subconscious part of him found absolutely endearing and looked at him with large, guilt ridden eyes. Immediately wanting to ease her conscience James went for the humorous response. "I'm afraid you've put me out of a job." He sighed heavily and shook his head in a dejected manner only to break out in a soft chuckle seconds later. "Kidding- I'm sure they have plenty of other things for me to do around here." He vaguely gestured to the construction commotion going on all around them. Someone would direct him to the next pressing task soon enough. "I'm James by the way. Moved here a couple of weeks ago. Like everyone else..." He trailed off, again rapidly tugging at his shirt to relieve some of the sweaty sticky feeling as the sun bore down on the pair. "And you are?"

Maggie kept her expression, though a smile was begging to break forth again at his equally playful demeanor. Her head tilted again to the other side, her eyebrows now raising slightly at his response. It provoked a laugh from her, as she was caught just slightly off guard. His smile was contagious, she knew that much. Wide and bright and honest. It really did make her swoon. She could tell already by his tone and the look in his eyes that he was appreciating more than just her special set of skills. Not that she minded; she didn't get much of that kind of attention in Paxton, and she felt confident enough to not shy away from it either. Maggie gave a low hum and a knowing nod, even rolling her eyes slightly at him when he gave up his defeated act. 'Funny~', she noted balancing the axe between her hands subconsciously. Despite his dismissal of the fact, she still felt a little guilty. She shook her head again, eyes casting towards her bare feet for a moment. He was quite a character. Someone she knew she would be seeing more often than not.
She too glanced about the worksite again. She spied one of the elder workers eyeing the two in conversation, but ignored her with a tiny roll of her eyes. It wasn't her fault they happened to meet now. When he introduced himself however, she looked back to him, with a smile once again on her face. His name suited his boyish charm and broad shoulders. 'Nice to meet you, James.' She tested his name on her tongue, liking it. Her axe fell into one hand, and the other she wiped on her shirt best she could, her expression becoming slightly embarrassed as she gazed down at her sweaty hand. Maggie shook it off when she stepped forward towards him and held her hand out to shake his with a smile. She figured if they were going to be friends, they should at least act like civilised beings to start. 'I'm Maggie,' she introduced herself. 'Maggie Salazar.' She thought it a shame they hadn't introduced themselves to eachother sooner. He would have been good company in the weeks prior.

Edwin Fear
Connections, like always, saved Edwin. While they had done so just hours before, when a colleague saved his life, just a second ago another one made his life far more convenient, in the forest just outside the town. "Go North. There's a city with your kind-" she always said 'your kind'. It made Edwin vaguely uncomfortable, but he stifled that feeling for now. "...called Paxton. Just follow the road. By the time there's an intersection, you should see it in the distance. Good luck... And good bye." Jenn, as his fair haired associate was named, had a somewhat mournful expression on her face as she bid farewell. Edwin, however, had a wide smile, the exuberance at having his life saved far outweighing the fear of the unknown.

He gave an exaggerated bow, the trees beside them standing still, in spite of the heavy wind a few days ago. Idly, he wondered if it was in mourning, but he couldn't tell for what. "Au revoir, my friend! This reminds-" he stopped, expression flickering to one of displeasure. He couldn't really tell a story at this time. "...Ah, I mean, I'm sure I'll see you again!" he lied, turning around and following her directions.

Like always, Edwin was a touch unfortunate. With naught but some business casual clothing and information, he was on his way toward Paxton, head held high as if he weren't just exiled from home. Jenn was a good soul for giving him advice, in spite of her complex attitude. While she rationalized it as having a valued contact for the future, the chances of them ever talking again was slim to none, so Edwin was fairly certain she had simply done it out of the goodness of her heart.

Which, naturally, brought the man to today, walking on a road, much fewer cars than there would have been a few months ago. That just led to the road being perfectly tarred, a very comfortable walk, and probably somewhat comfortable to sleep on if he decided to chance it. He decided against it, for hopefully obvious reasons. The dirt on his clothes, which so recently had been spiffy as possible, was evident of that, and the blisters on his feet were evident of more.

However, never one to dwell on such things, Edwin kept walking. Each step reinvigorated him, eager to set up shop - literally - in a new location, arms swinging in an almost exaggerated fashion wide grin on his face. And who knows? Maybe he'd meet another traveler, though he could hardly see anyone or anything nearby. He had taken to naming some of the Darklings, but, well, he wasn't very close to them. In the distance, the far distance, he could already see the town, ripe and ready for the taking.

James Earl Grey
KkluLpG.jpg

He could see he had amused her somewhat by the roll of her eyes at his antics. So hopefully she wasn't still feeling like she'd put him out of place. He followed her eyes down to her bare feet, raising and eyebrow at the discovery. She seemed wholly unbothered by the heat of the ground and it made James wonder what sort of upbringing she had. In any case her barefoot nature suited her image. She felt very wholesome and natural in the few minutes he'd spoken with her. Different from the city goers he was used to.

James' mouth quirked up into a smile when she extended her hand for his to shake, only after she wiped some of her sweat off first. Truth be told he wouldn't have minded but she appeared to be very conscious of courtesies. James took her hand and gave it a firm shake briefly marveling at the warmth before letting go. She introduced herself as Maggie and he continued to smile. Even that was fitting. "It's nice meeting you too Maggie."

"You gonna socialize all day or actually get some work done?"

The woman in charge had apparently had enough of their chit chat, watching them pensively with her hands on her hips. James rolled his eyes humourously at Maggie to indicate his annoyance, out of the womans view before turning to address her. "Sorry about that. What you got for me?" She scoffed before directing him to assist with transporting the logs that Maggie had finished cutting to another area of the work site. James was delighted with the task as it'd give him more time to get to know his new acquaintance. "On it." He affirmed, moving to grab and arms load of logs. Naturally he couldn't heft as much as Maggie in his human form and he'd be far too slow in his metallicized form but a nearby wheelbarrow would make the job easier. He dumped the logs in the wheelbarrow and rolled it over to the drop off area before returning back to Maggie. "See? There's work for me after all." He nudged her playfully with his shoulder as he passed. At the rate she was chopping she'd finish her task long before he would. He wondered how long she could endure.

"Anyway, how long you been here?" A bland question but they were both too busy to really have anything more than passing conversation at the moment. There was more he wanted to ask, to know but he'd start with the basics for now.

It wasn't likely Maggie would crush his hand, as she was in good spirits, and he was no threat. It might have been the sweat coating his hand, or just her underestimation of him, but his hands had a softness to them she didn't expect. She shook his larger hand with a firmness that rivaled his before she was back to holding her axe comfortably in both hands. It felt odd knowing her smaller one held a greater strength than his, but also slightly comforting. Her head turned to the woman in charge, her eyes widening slightly after she followed James' line of sight. She stifled a laugh at James' roll of his eyes, but stopped when the woman sent her own exclusive look of annoyance. Maggie looked away with a look of feigned innocence and allowed her to speak to James about his newest chore. In the time he took to gather his bearings, she had the axe lodged into the trunk a few good times. Her body began to grow heated again after the brief intermission, and her eyes began wandering. Sneakily as she could, she followed James' movements, becoming impressed by the weight he wheeled about the sight. His arms were something she just could not ignore. With a shake of her head at herself, she went back to bringing her axe down on the quickly withering tree. What had started as a trunk was only very small now. Her eyes lit up a little when she smiled at James. Her nod affirmed his words. She might've looked relieved. 'Well, thank God for that then, huh?', she chuckled, not very phased by his nudge as he passed her. The longer she was in his company, the more comfortable she became around the happy go lucky guy, even if it has only been a few good minutes. He had a presence that you couldn't help but smile in. His small talk got her thinking, as she brought her axe down one more time before coming to a stop and once again taking a few even breaths to level herself out. She looked over at him as he re-filled his barrow. 'About two and a half months by now i think. I could tell you exactly but I don't have my calendar~.' Something she promised she would try to keep track of, to remember. 'I used to live in [the capital city]....' She could tell he was already comfortable around her, but she secretly hoped her being from their biggest and baddest city didn't change his opinion of her. 'You?' she asked, wondering where he was from. To not anger anyone she began lining up her axe for another swing.

Alex had been driving for a while now. He had no idea where he was going, but he knew he was going in the right direction of this
community as the closer he got, he was hearing more and more of people flocking to the area. It was around 2 days later that he found the town
he had been looking for. He was exhausted both mentally and physically. Parking the car up, he got out and began to look around for any place that
looked like somewhere to get some food.

Finding a small diner, Alex killed the engine and got out, lifting his tired but slightly fussy son out of his car seat. As he locked the car and began to
get to the diners entrance, he could her the multiple murmers and voices begin to assault his mind. He would have to get this under control so he could
live among people again. With a tired sigh he sat down in a booth with his son sitting in his lap, thoroughly fascinated with the bright and colourful menu.
Alex gave a tired smile at his sons antics.

He sat there looking at the menu when he picked up thoughts that talked about having powers. Acting like he did not know what was going on, he pretended to
not know what was going on. Trying to pick up what information he could.
