Fantasy Eberdeen

Something
For a moment everything was dark, a vast, still emptiness.
Senses slowly began to break the numbing void. Familiar chirps echoed through, beckoning to the character in gentle waves. They stirred with unrest, hands feeling beneath them at damp tendrils. Many of them, all around, tickling their skin from the surface below.

grass..?

The realization woke the figure with a pained inhale, eyes fluttering open to a night sky hanging above. Their lungs burned and struggled to move as if pushing something from their body. They lurched forward with a swell of brown muck soon being expelled ahead of them. Gross.

The metallic taste lingered on their tongue and soiled their breath, a smell that masked the fragrance of a humid forest. Eyes lifted from the unpleasant goo and scanned the moonlit area, taking in a line of trees circling the small meadow. It was difficult to see how far the woods continued on from where they sat, a sense of unease taking over their emotions. Fireflies flickered here and there, fading from their view. The crickets stridulating had given them a false familiarity, they quickly realized. This place is far from recognizable. What could they recognize? They couldn't remember anything, not even themselves. All but one name had escaped them.

Rilean, Rilean, Rilean,

It echoed in their mind as they tried to stand, pulling the grass and roots from their legs. The herbage cracked and churned whilst they got a footing, not bothering to try to dust the dirt from the worn out clothes hung across their frame. Walking proved to be more challenging than they expected at first, gathering the strength and maintaining balance. They hobbled a bit, but was determined to keep going.

Ahead lay two directions Rilean could easily take. The first was a beaten path leading northwest, sounds of life danced through the trees when they neared it and there was the faint flicker of firelight. The second was an opening covered in over-grown foliage that seemed to lead north east, the path was small, barely a trail, as if only used by the occasional child out to play. It was strangely alluring, but Rilean felt the sense of being watched when they got close.

Which direction should Rilean go?
1. Northwest
2. Northeast

Go northwest, off the beaten path, the tried-and-tested path.
The other path northeast seems to be a place that people avoid.
If you walk that path, there is no telling if you will make it out alive.
Save yourself the trouble of dying and walk straight to civilization.
No need to be a victim of that vast wilderness, that no man's land.

Hesitation held them in place for a moment, eyes trailing between the two openings carefully in thought. They decided to take the path less traveled, considering the possibility of hostile inhabitants to the west. Despite their stumbling it didn't take long to reach the northeastern trail. Rilean grabbed at the thick vines and attempted to break them and pull them out of the way. The foliage creaked and shook as it was weakly handled, dropping leaves and twigs onto the figure. It was to no avail, the entangled mass would not come apart or move beyond a few inches. Perhaps if Rilean was stronger they could easily remove this obstacle, but for now they had to find another way. A huff escaped them before they knelt down to look in to the opening, coming to notice they could fit through it at this height.

Moving slowly under the brush, they struggled to keep a footing against the stray vines beneath them. The feeling of being watched hadn't set in until they neared the exit which was much smaller than it looked from the other side. It was as if it had only just shrunk to keep them from proceeding, and Rilean grew more unsettled with each second. Lifting their elbow to push through the entrance, they had to use most of what little strength their gaunt body could manage. The foliage ripped and slid against the pressure, a vine of thorns digging into the flesh of their elbow mercilessly.

The force behind their movements caused themselves to nearly tumble forward as they broke through the heap of greenery with a loud grunt. They managed to catch themselves before they could hit the ground, their hair pulling at their scalp as it tangled between thorns. Rilean had to take a moment to catch their breath. Their lungs burned. ugh.

Crickets played their soft tunes as Rilean gathered the strength to continue forward, pulling themselves up from the dirt. The long hair freed with the movement, their gaze rising to the area around them. While the moon was high and bright, it was darker on this side of the brush. Large trees masked their neighbors in shadows, moon beams dancing through the foliage with a soft breeze. A faint light emitted from further along the path in a steady glow. What little they could see was mostly lit by the fireflies, though they were less in number now. For a moment Rilean considered going back and trying the other path; however, when they took a peek behind them they were met with a set of glowing eyes peering at them from the shadow of the opening. Startled, they kept moving forward, at a faster pace now than before. Their heart beat against their chest as if to urge them to move faster, but Rilean could barely continue the quick paced walk at the moment.

The trail they kept on was hardly there as they went deeper in to the forest. However, Rilean felt more at ease here than in the forest edge. While the sense of being watch still followed, it was lessened greatly, as if whatever had been eyeing them lost interest. It was no longer something they felt they needed to run from for now. The sound of running water quickly caught their attention, pulling their mind from the fear with ease. Curiosity and thirst urged them towards it and off the path. They crept through a wall of hanging vines and ivy, climbing over a bed of thorns just to get to the other side.

Ahead of them lied a clearing substantially smaller than the meadow before. A pooling stream ran through it, giving off the soft trickling noises they found so alluring. Moonlight kept most the environment lit with a soft shade of blue. Around the clearing was more of the same forest with a larger, spiraling tree centered just off the edge of it. It had a hole big enough for a grown man to sit in, but it was placed on the other side of the water. For now, Rilean focused on the pool of water the stream gave life to. They approached it, coming to rest on their aching knees.

From what they could see of their filthy reflection, they were....

C. Listen, it's not about the color of our hair, it's about the way we style it. No color will ever be able to clash with a stylish hairdo. In any case, I think Black is a good choice, but you can try to sway me on this if you wish.

For starters, Rliean was a man- Gaunt and weak, but still male. He dipped his hands into the water and rinsed the dirt from his face, taking in the person who stared back at him. Long white hair, tan skin, dark eyes- What is this?

The reflection was so unfamiliar it was nearly unsettling, but he took it as it was and moved on from the thought with a sigh. It did take him a moment before he decided to clean the cuts on his arms with the running water, removing the dirt from his skin the best he could. They stung and itched as if he had been bitten by something. Rilean took another look around once he finished, eyes scanning the parameter carefully. He could go back and continue trying to traverse the dark forest, or take shelter in the tree across the water for the night.

What will Rilean do?
1. Continue to travel.
2. Try to rest.

Sorry it has taken me so long for such a short post.

2. Try to rest.
Mum told us not to wander around in the forest at night, because what if we... get lost? Run into a dangerous woodland creature? Or worse, discover something straight out of stories and myths, like a kelpie or a random staircase?

It's too dark to deal with anything like that, and since our gut tells us this spot is 100% safe (probably), this is where we're going to sleep off the night.

2.Try to Rest

Rilean took his gaze from the trickling water and stood, placing a foot into the stream to see how deep it goes. His foot sank farther than he expected, taking a moment to enjoy the cool liquid on his shins before crossing. The ground was wet below him when he made it to the other tide, the soil soft and almost muddy. Dark eyes trailed over the tree ahead when he continued forward, ducking under an opening made of massive tangling roots. He took hold of a root near the opening and pulled himself on to it only to walk along it towards the opening. The area grew quiet when he climbed in to the hole, as if the noise of the forest didn't exist. He too one last peek outside of the tree to make sure nothing had followed him and cradled his knees, leaning against the rough bark with relief. He felt like he hadn't slept in ages, and though the tree wasn't a comfortable place to rest, it was better than wet grass. The thoughts racing through his head slowly dissolved into nothing when his eyes closed.

A soft thudding on the side of his face stirring the man, he peeled his eyes open to meet the shadow of the opening. Sight blurred from sleep, he could barely tell if it was still night time. He groaned and felt at the wood below him where small, brown seeds were piling up. Acorns, a voice echoed from the back of his mind. He rubbed his eyes and let them focus before looking out of the hole, matted white hair falling to the side of his face. Just then another acorn flew at him from below, hitting his chin and falling back down. Rilean moved so he could see what, or who, was throwing things at him only to be surprised.

The creature below was small, much smaller than Rilean. It looked as though it was some kind of animal, but it was standing on it's back feet..paws..
Sandy fur and large blue eyes....wearing clothes..

It said something to Rilean, but his mind couldn't register what it was. He was too tired and alarmed.

"What are you?" The thing repeated in an oddly human voice, only louder.

The sun pierced Rilean's view as he crept out of the hole. He shaded his eyes with a hand, taking in what he could of the clearing.

The creature's big ears fell back for moment before popping back up, as if it were thinking when it got a look of Rilean. "What's a human doing here?"

Rilean remained silent, not sure how to respond to this- thing- that was talking at him. He wasn't sure if he could even speak clearly.

The creature came closer and Rilean jumped, falling off of the large root and hitting the ground with a loud thud. His rear hurt now along with everything else.

"Calm down, kid," The creature had moved closer when Rilean fell, only a few feet from him now. It didn't look like it wanted to harm him, but Rilean couldn't bring his nerves down so easily.

He can...
1. Run away
2. Try to calm down and talk
3. Attack the Creature
4. [You choose something else]

Woops I forgot about this
