Active [Eastern Border of the Fae See - M’lynra Village] - One Last Push

Mage of the Fae See
The mage of the Fae See pondered Grubble’s reaction as the group prepared to march, contemplating just what it was about the ridiculous spindle-legged thick-armed man that so intrigued her. He was no TonDen--with it’s brilliant but slow mind, cooly analyzing its surroundings with the slow revolutions of its crystalline thoughts--that much was certain. Neither was he like Bruce, the endearing but mindless mindless murder machine of razored fins and flesh-rending teeth. No, Grubble was a different kind of monster; one made by accident; by the pure and cruel thoughtlessness of a child.
He was also kind of dumb and thought she was “weird.”
What would a bolster to his intelligence yield? She wondered. The mage was not in the habit of aiding others, but would making Grubble more acutely aware of the inescapable horror of his existence really be an aid? Well, of course it would.

As the party moved out and she trailed her escorts, the mage of the Fae See was approached by several of them, the first being the hammer-weilder, speaking that modern perversion of the true language that the benighted elves and other Fae of this land tended to use. Irihi could understand it well enough, though she usually pretended she could not. {{“Why thank you, dearheart.”}} The mage replied to Almeida in somewhat-intelligible proto-Sylvan. She could understand especially well, when what was being said was a compliment. Not so much with questions or misapprehensions.

As they passed through the depths of the wild wood, the astral projection of the sword of the armored fire elemental wafted back to drift by her side. She was an impudent little spirit, asking the mage for a scrying, of sorts. The hooded figure stopped, turning her head until cowl-shadowed pale violet eyes took in all of Seraphina. “Do you really want to know?” the mage rejoined. She noted that Flare had likewise dropped back and now loomed over the two of them, ostensibly to protect the spirit of her weapon. A wise move. The mage thought. They make a cute couple, but that would not have stopped me consuming her soul, once upon a time.

That once upon a time was not now, however. Her powers were at ebb, and she was much reduced. Mortals did not cower and grovel in fear, or snuff their matchstick lives out against her monolith power. Ghosts no longer fled her presence, shrieking in terror. It was peaceful, this world; a sabbatical from the maelstrom of her atrocities.

”Very well. So, a scrying. Well, why not? It was better entertainment than traipsing silently to their doom. The mage leaned her scythe against her shoulder and made a “come hither” gesture with one ruby-nailed hand.

A common woodland sparrow flitted, still chirping its morning song, down from the trees, landing in her palm. It twittered, fluffed its little feathers, and hopped to-and-fro on the mage’s pale hand.

Abruptly, her wickedly thin fingers closed about the creature and she flung it violently against the iron-hard trunk of an oak tree. With a cut-off squawk, the sparrow exploded like a tiny feathery grenade, most of it’s flesh and bones consumed in a burst of witchcraft.

Straightening her robes, the sorceress turned to examine the position and orientation of the few wingbones, bits of skull, feathers, and entrails that had survived being consumed by the blast of mana with which she had imbued the slaughtered bird. As these fated shards of the tiny taken life dripped down the rough bark, she divined what she could from the minor sacrifice. “I cannot see a future for you, dearheart,” she murmured, lost in the scrying, and not liking what she found there. “...only what you are, and what you were.”

The mage’s jaw tightened. Seraphina was not, and could never be, one of the witch’s beloved monsters. She was too close to what the mage, herself, was. “Just another flawed weapon, forged by a lust for power,” she sighed. There were towers of silver and glass--that rivaled even the glory of Karas O’ormel--in this one’s past. But in that shining world she had lived a life of lies and betrayal that those who had forged her had tried--and failed--to erase. The blood was already congealing and the casting became murky before she could divine much. Far greater sacrifice was required for a true scrying.

”Death is a doorway,” the mage intoned. “Forgetting is a gift.” She added. “There is much you have forgotten, little one. I would tell you to thank those who forged you; they tried as best they could, to scour the memories from you with fire--yet some remain. The steel in your heart is tainted by the impurities of them…”

The mage turned her baleful gaze upward, to the glowing grate of Flare’s suit. “Be careful how you wield this one; she is more fragile than she seems, and you could shatter her.” She warned.

Her attention returned to the image of Seraphina. “I would tell you to thank them--your makers--but they murdered you and your loved ones, and that forebears absolution.” The mage had unshouldered her scythe. Now her fingers tightened upon it. “Their deaths were not good; it could not have been easy for you to witness them--slowly disappearing down in that silent darkness.” The mage’s jaw tightened. She hated this. This was why she should not do readings for mortals. When the fog of malice parted, and she remembered empathy, it… hurt. “Forgetting is a gift. I wish I could grant it to you.” She said, for once meaning every word, before the stormclouds of ire again obscured her few pinprick stars of humanity.

“Perhaps with greater sacrifice; the eyes--or maybe the heart--of your fiery companion, I could do more for you.” The mage turned away from Seraphina. “But I will not scry you again.” She said, walking on.

Glim let out a sob at Grubble’s words. The heartfelt comfort he was trying to offer her just about broke her tiny heart. She could barely keep flying, knowing what she knew. I can’t do this to him… to them! But she had to. There was no choice. Oh, they could lose M’lyrna to the bugs; let this minor strategic intersection fall. But the whole front was failing; was in danger of collapse.

If this mission failed, it would not lose the war, but if the company to the north likewise folded, and the fort to the south could not hold out, then these pinprick leaks in the dike would become an unstoppable torrent, and the horrors--the ones that glassed Glim’s empty gaze when she sat alone by herself--would flood into the See and consume everything.

Glim took a deep breath and put a tiny hand on the huge purple shoulder again. ”T-thanks, Grubble. You are helping me be brave,” she said. The corporal came to a decision. ”I would like to be your friend, if that’s okay with you,” she requested. I think I can open the portal wide enough for him. she thought to herself. ”I want you to promise me something, Grubble; no matter what you see, or hear, or what’s happening around us; I need you to stay with me.” She paused. ”I know this sounds like the job I gave you earlier, but I mean it, Grubble; things might get… confusing. Just… wherever I go, you have to come too, okay?” She requested.

And then fucking ghost girl was playing ouija with their mage. At least the annoyance Glim felt supplanted the miniscule knot of dread in the pit of her stomach. As the remains of the unfortunate bird dribbled onto the roots of the old growth tree, Glim flitted over. “Guys, she’s not a fire mage, she’s not a mystic or a fucking palm-reader. She our tank-buster.” The fairy called to the group at large. ”And… I’m going to strongly suggest that you all avoid talking to her any more than is absolutely necessary.”

The corporal turned toward the robed mage. ”Private, I’m going to remind you of you’re one job here--”

“I’m well-aware, Corporal; cannon fodder, just like everyone else.” The mage cut her off.

Glim blanched, her fairy sparkles fading like a dimmed lamp before she opened her mouth to issue a rejoinder.

Bug Outer Pickets
And, abruptly, the squad was in it. Something, perhaps a footfall from the woman walking point, maybe the argument between corporal and private, maybe at an unseen signal that had nothing to do with Fae, construct, or human, two Pincher Bugs and one Thrower erupted from the leaves and forest detritus where they had burrowed. The Pincers were close, the Thrower more distant. Each Pincer Bug chose a different target from the two leaders, while the Thrower took aim at the point woman.

One Pincher bug rushed Almedia, forward claws snapping. It aimed for her legs in an attempt to knock her to the ground with a [Pincer Attack E].

The Thrower Bug used its flexible tail to grab--not dung but--a rock from the forest floor. The rock was more deeply buried than the bug had anticipated, and it took some tugging to pull it free. It then flung the stone at Almedia with the impressive force of a [Ranged Attack C].

The second Pincher bug split from its companion and charged Yunaesa. It stopped short of the chainsaw-weilding skirmisher, arching it’s back to give more range to the poison-barbed tail. The tail lashed forward, aiming to deliver a damaging sting from above to Yunaesa’s head or shoulders.

Summary;

The Fae See mage, the squad is escorting, thanks Almedia for her “compliment” then gruesomly sacrifices a sparrow to divine Seraphina’s past.

Glim feels better (or maybe worse) when Grubble reassures her. She suggests the others not interact with their tankbuster mage.

“[Oh, that'd mean you'd get to command me!]” She realised, when Yuna stressed she was third. That was a weird thought. As for the potential shit throwing and acid... “[Otherwise we'd need yet another bathhouse! I wonder if they have those here.]”

She'd nod sagely. “[We should find a bug-cookbook.]” That should help getting preparing them well. “[An anti-poison bug-cookbook.]” She added after the next consideration.

“{Sticks and stones are horrible weapons. Nothing like Valerius or Zjorn or your cool armour.}” She'd agree with Flare.

She titled her head, as she'd barely gotten the basics of Sylvan down and now barely understood a word all over. “{Thank you...? You're welcome {{dearheart}}!}” She just tried echoing the same word back in the same manner, hoping that was enough to be polite or nice, or something similar enough.

Yawning as the mage was talking lots and lots in a language she didn't get, apparently killing birds for no reason at all, she'd look the others. She titled her head at the tiny fairly calling out angrily. “{What's her problem?}” She asked Flare.

“[Oh, rock smash-back time!]” She would call out, upon the arrival of the enemy bugs. Considering the two bugs seemed to be teaming up, with one trying to pinch attack her from below and another throwing a rock at her from above, she figured the beast way to deal with them was by hitting it all back big-time. “{HAMMER TIME!}”

None of that was what Seraphina wanted to hear or wanted anyone else to hear. She had been telling half truths to avoid it and glossed over thongs to keep those memories in the background. The only good thing was that the illusion of what had likely been her human form was controlled by her. The face didn't move unless she willed it as magic should be. That way the anger, the shock, the sadness, none of it showed on the spectral form. Still she disagreed with the spooky mage about one thing forgetting was not a mercy it was a curse. All those lost to rust only went on in her memory and all those before during her lives had been taken. You might feel a bit better not having sad memories but the good sustained you and if you had none you would crave to know what you lost. Forgetting was no mercy when you lingered on the world.

" I'll find those myself, as you and I see mercy differently " Seraphina stated with a huff before the illusion vanished putting an end to any conversation.

Then came the bug attack, luckly nothing seemed to be heading towards flare so Seraphina with the calm afforded to her thanks to her nit worrying about the actual fighting could think about the best thing to do. Flare didn't need to scare the bugs and the bugs weren't right on her now. That was both a relief and a frustration as Seraphina wanted to vent her rage upon a bug or two. For now however, she needed to be defensive. She decided on a plan and used [ projection group E ] to create an image of seraphina and herself about 2 ir 3 feet fron where they stood while the real pair were made unseen by the illusion. Though it was still a weak illusion and Seraphina had no clue if it would fool bugs.

"[Huh I guess that does mean I'd get to command you! But let's not lose that many people so that needs to happen, we're gonna destroy those bad bugs instead!]" Yunaesa declared confidently.

"[If we can find a bathhouse guess it means we could check another off the list, since we talked about checking out ones around all over.]"

"[Ooooh a bug cookbook I bet those exist! You know I haven't cooked a lot of stuff before except for really basic things but I think It'd be pretty fun to try something more complicated sometime, maybe we could learn about different kinds of bug meat and parts and learn how to best cook them! Yeah the anti poison part sounds pretty important, or at least learning how to neutralize that kinda thing.]"
Yunaesa grinned at the prospect, not put off at all at the idea of preparing or eating bugs from the sounds of things. Meat was meat after all.

Yunaesa was equally confused by what the mage was talking about since she didn't understand any of it, it just sounded like gargled nonsense.
"[Haha Yeah we got the firepower to overpower them!]" She'd say in agreement with Almeida about their superior weapon options.

Yunaesa would sort of zone out at the point there was more talking she didn't understand, instead focusing on the surroundings and on their mission, so when the bugs finally did arrive she was pretty well ready, calling on her if albeit brief military experience.

"[Skirmishing Time! Me and Zjorn got this one!]" She'd call out before counter attacking the tail attack with

Grubble kept his eyes on the path ahead, his thoughts lingering on what he’d just said to Glim. He didn’t notice her reaction at first, but when he felt her tiny hand on his shoulder, a soft warmth spread through him. That touch told him all he needed to know.

"Grubble right," he mumbled to himself, a slow grin creeping across his wide face.

When Glim responded, asking him something about being friends, Grubble blinked in confusion. His brow furrowed as he tried to make sense of it. "Huh? We already friends. What you mean?" He scratched his head, not understanding why a friend would ask to be friends again. But he didn’t dwell on it. If Glim wanted to hear him say it again, he didn’t mind. He shrugged his big shoulders and gave her a thumbs up.

"Yup, Grubble stay with Glim."

He felt good about that. Saying things twice didn’t bother him none, especially if it made Glim happy. When she started talking to the others, Grubble tuned out and focused back on the road. It wasn’t his conversation, and there were a lot of words he probably wouldn’t get anyway. He didn’t mind; he liked focusing on the dirt under his feet and watching the bugs skitter away when they heard him coming.

But then, out of nowhere, the quiet woods erupted into chaos. Grubble saw three large insects bursting from the trees. Two of them charged right at the group, their legs clicking loudly, while a third loomed in the rear, twitching its antennae like it was waiting for something.

Grubble tensed, his instincts kicking in. Without a second thought, he bent down, took off one of his shoes, and held it in his hand like a weapon. He glanced at Glim, mumbling under his breath, "Stay close, Glim," before turning back to face the bugs.

With a deep breath, Grubble puffed out his chest, his muscles flexing under his purple skin. He let out a low, rumbling growl that grew into a full-blown roar. His fangs bared, his shoe held up like a small makeshift club, he glared at the approaching insects.

"Grrrrrr! Shooooo!" he bellowed, stomping one foot for extra effect. He waved his shoe menacingly, hoping to scare the creatures off. "Grubble smash y’all good!"

He couldn’t tell if his roar made the bugs think twice, but they weren’t coming at him or Glim. Still, he kept his guard up, shoe in hand, ready to smack anything that came too close. "Grubble ready!" he mumbled to himself. "Shoe always work."

Second in command? Admittedly, Flare wasn't expecting to be put that high on the hierarchical order... though given their condensation of the plan provided ought to give them at least a few brownie points. Nevertheless, they accepted the role,

Flare kept a very careful eye on Seranphina's conversation with the mysterious dark mage, standing close enough to be able to grab her back at a moment's notice if necessary. They doubt anything would really happen to Sera, but the vibes coming off the dark mage had them reasonably unsettled. Clearly they were no fire mage. If anything, she was the complete opposite of a fiery flame; a dark empty void. Lifeless and uncaring; a stark contrast to the fire elemental's blazing light and upbeat tone. And upon seeing the mage snuff out the life of the harmless sparrow within an explosion. The armored entity's fists gripped tightly, with the metal abrasively screeching against one another as their aura brightened just a bit more. A cruel mistress of the dark arts... they knew they weren't going to get along too well.

"I think that's enough." Flare interjected with a low yet stern tone, as they reached out for Sera to come back to them. They glowered at the mage's warning on how to utilize their friend; not that they thought she was terribly wrong, but their issue heavily stemmed on her tone... something which was not appreciated here. "Stay in your lane." Flare countered with a simmered warning of their own, "She's stronger than you think. As is her potential..." Given time, Flare could see Sera being an extremely powerful entity in their own rank. True, she may not currently be the strongest that she is at the moment, but this could easily change. And while they didn't know too much about their backstory, Sera still was determined to make a name for herself in their own way. Time and experience were all she needed to get stronger... something which applied to everyone really.

The mage's sacrificial suggestion nearly caused Flare to fling a fireball at her while she departed their presence. What an absolutely detestable woman. And thankfully, it appeared Seranphina had the same opinion. As her illusion disappeared and returned to the elemental, Flare gave a frustrated sigh as they focused on the road ahead. "{She's just being a detestable hag.}" Flare muttered in Sylvan as they replied to Almedia's query, "{Best you ignore her. She has issues... LOTS of issues.}" Focusing back on Sera, they'd virtually repeat the same thing to her in common.

As Glim called to everyone about their resident tank-buster, Flare rose their arm and waved a thumbs up. "Way ahead of you!" they called out bluntly.

Suddenly, the squad would be ambushed by three of those nasty bugs emerging from the underbrush. The two "pinchers" raced towards them, with the thrower chucking rocks - not acid as Flare initially believed - at their general direction. "Ambush! {Ambush!}" they called out twice in their fluent languages as their fists combust into flame. While they themselves weren't their current targets, the bugs were heading towards their front and opposite skirmisher - being Almedia and Yunesa respectively. Grubble was coming to assist, unleashing a mighty roar as he attempted to shoo them off. They appeared to handle them accordingly, but the biggest issue now was the thrower chucking rocks from afar. They needed to act quickly. "I'm going after the thrower." Flare said to Sera, "Cover me."

The ghost would comply, projecting an image of the two about two to three feet ahead of them. Perhaps the bugs would attempt to swing at the fake Flare before being hit by the real deal. A sound illusionary proposition. Flare nodded approvingly with a smile, "Let's put it to the test!" With that, the fire elemental charged towards the ranged bug, feeling the leaves crunch beneath their metal feet. Once getting close enough, Flare's armored hand conjured a fireball and hurdled it towards the rock-throwing bug hoping to at least grab its attention if not scorch it to a crisp.

Corporal Glimmerleaf put her hand back on Grubble’s shoulder as he threatened the bugs with a shoe. She needed the contact to keep position as she channeled Mana for a supporting attack. ”Squad! Forward!” She ordered, urging Grubble to advance along with Flare and Yunaesa as the squad shifted from patrol formation to a skirmish line.

Almedia seemed the most powerful of their melee fighters, so Glim took aim at the bug engaging Yunaesa. She launched an [Ice Spike E] and [Ice Spike F] over Grubble’s shoulder.

Bug Outer Pickets Bug 1
The Pincer Bug attacking Almedia was crushed beneath Valerius--it’s own attack overwhelmed by Almedia’s counter blow. One of it’s large claws was smashed flat. The blast from the hammer blow blinded the monster and cracked it’s armored carapace.

Even so, the creature was not dead. Though badly wounded and weakened, the bug brought up it’s remaining pincer to snap at the hammer-weilder even as the shock of the heavy strike sapped its remaining health and strength. Though it was blinded, it was close enough to use it’s vestigial echolocation from its subterranean heritage to target Almedia.

The insectoid monster attacking Yunaesa was about to overpower her with a pincer attack, but found itself at risk of losing its tail as Zjorn buzzed toward the flexible appendage. The bug countered furiously, whipping the stinger-tipped tail at the chainsword.

This proved a damaging mistake, as the teeth of the chain ripped cleanly through the monster’s tail, severing it with a spray of bug ichor, and then biting into the creatures’s carapace, damaging its armor. The bug screeched and backed up, tucking away its tailstump as the severed appendage flopped around on the forest floor.

No sooner had it backed away, then Glim’s ice spikes came winging in. The monster raised its claws defensively, but the magic shattered its defenses, destroying one claw and damaging the other.

Bug 3
The Thrower bug

The thrower bug spotted the incoming fireball. Grabbing a second rock--it whipped it at Flare’s magical ranged attack. The heat of the spell caused the rock to explode in midair, gutting most, but not all, of the fireball’s power. The remains of the flaming magic blasted the insectoid monster, damaging its powerful tail and burning away its armored carapace.

The Thrower seemed cleverer than its two escorts. Rather than stop mid-battle to lick it’s wounds, it instead quivered and heaved. Its flexible tail arced forward toward its mandible-lined mouth. The monster vomited up a strange reddish orb. Abruptly, the tail whipped skyward and launched the orb straight up into the air. High above the forest canopy the orb exploded in a burst of red smoke that slowly dissipated. The smoke was clearly no threat to anyone on the ground, but rather some sort of signal.

Flare's fireball crashed against the stone-cold projectile, exploding into fiery bits as the flaming debris pelted against the ranged bug. It had done significant damage to its tail and armored shell, practically tenderizing it for one last solid attack. And this time, the fire elemental was going in with fists blazing! Storming through the brush, Flare was about to go in for the finishing blow before temporarily ceasing to watch the arthropod caster vomit up a curious-looking orb. "The hell-?" Flare asked audibly, before seeing it fling straight into the air by the bug's powerful tail. They could help but watch it soar into the canopy before exploding into a thick red smoke. While it didn't cause harm to anyone here, it took a moment before Flare could figure out what it meant. Once they did-

"Shit..." they muttered aloud, enough for Sera to hear them, "They're calling for backup!"

Wasting no further time, the fire elemental lunged towards the thrower; getting in range before winding up their blazing fist and unleashing a fiery punch towards their foe's head. Immediately after, they followed it up with yet another fiery jab towards the bug in a quick yet powerful "one-two" hit!

Even with the chaos going on around her, Yunaesa focused on the enemy at hand still, even if they had been pretty beat up by her and the Corporeal at this point, Bug #2 still needed to be put down, so without hesitating, She went in for more attacks, attempting to saw through Bug #2's remaining armor to expose it's more vulnerable under body with Zjorn's Zinger, Zjorn buzzing with energy again.

Yunaesa slashes and or stabs a single target up to 5 ft away from her to try to inflict a wound which is more difficult to heal.- Grade F, 0 Post Cooldown.

She then followed up with two follow up basic attacks to try to deal fatal damage on bug #2, undeterred by any would be bug guts or blood, she had gotten her fill of it with those awful summons which she and Almeida had cut through before, nor was she particularly sensitive to the violence particularly if it was what she deemed a 'bad'.

"[Phew! That was lucky, Really cool attack! Literally too! Thanks Corporeal!]" Yunaesa called out, pleased that Zjorn had managed to cut the tail off and that the ice magic attack had landed true on it's target, this mean that Yunaesa was able to recover.

Yunaesa naturally didn't understand the common that Flare called out, if she was capable of hearing it to begin with, but she might have noticed the red orb flying up, "[Woah! That's not good, I think bugs might like light like that! I don't know why else it would do that unless it's trying to get attention!]"

"[ Follow Any orders?!]"
She'd call out.

Almeida did spot the weird thing that the Thrower bug just did, which seemed to confuse Yuna as well. “[Did that thing just... signal that they're under attack?]” “{Did that bug just warn its allies?}” She'd ask in both languages. “[If we get out of here fast enough, can we avoid its allies and make it to the big one? We could use this to lure them away if we're out fast enough!]” She'd suggest, then in Sylvan. “{Can we run around to dodge its allies and go after the big one instead?}”

As for what Flare said about the mage, she did have some questions. “{You sure? What kind of issues, shouldn't we try help?}” Honestly, this made her only more curious of this supposedly horrible 'hag' of a mage. Enough so to call out to the Scythe wielding mage, wondering if they could get a response. “{Did you see me squash that bug?}” She'd ask, as she had no clue what else to talk about, yet wanted a topic, just because she was curious to interact with this supposedly to-be-hated hag.

“Don’t let up! They’re tough!” Glim shouted encouragement as the squad overwhelmed the bugs with their numbers, speed, and powerful attacks. There was a lot of bug to hew, burn, smash, and freeze through, so Glim did just as she exhorted the others, sending more magic ice spikes winging downrange as she and Grubble moved to back up Yunaesa.

“I’m sorry Grubble, I hope I’m not freezing your ear off.” Glim apologized as she continued to fire (ice) over the large purple man’s shoulder.

The ailing bug facing Almedia didn’t have a chance to respond as it was hammered completely flat, even by the point woman’s flagging strength. As the hammer dropped, it would be difficult to determine whether it was the shock from the first attack, or the massive damage dealt by additional blows of Valerius, that killed the bug.

Not that it much mattered, dead was dead, and this bug was exceptionally dead.

Second Pincer Bug tried to engage Yunaesa with its one remaining pincer. For a moment, it looked as though the powerful limb was matched in strength with Zjorn, but that appearance was only transient as the chainsword weilder doubled and then tripled down on her attack, chopping off the pincer and digging through the last of the bug’s armor. A hail of ice spikes from the corporal erased the bug’s life, blighting its remains with so much ice that it became more frozen sculpture than corpse.

The Thrower bug (thought it) saw Flare approaching and (thought it) was ready. It caught the illusion of their first fiery punch with it’s powerful tail. Both flaming punches smashed through what was left of the Thrower’s armor and fire destroyed what fist did not. The AdversaryAll bugs of the scout/picket group were dead. The mercenaries and Fae See soldiers had a clear path ahead through the rest of the trees and to the edge of the fields that still separated them from the objective.

Corporal Iona GlimmerleafThe corporal did not miss the signal from the Thrower bug. It was very disturbing; something she had not seen them do before. Whatever the smoke signal meant, she doubted it was anything good. She could only hope that they could still proceed with the plan. It seemed like the monsters brought new tactics and skills to the battlefield with each encounter, and that never benefited the forces of the See.

”Almeda’s right! We need to push on the town!” Glim shouted. The patrol formation had become a skirmish line, with all fighters roughly abreast. It was not how she preferred to move; they would have no warning and less ability to shift their strength when coming under attack, but speed was of the essence now that their approach had been detected.

”Everyone, forward! Private Spokelse, pick up the goddamn pace!” Glim shouted over her shoulder to their reluctant robed mage.

Ahead, the trees would thin as they approached the edge of the cultivated land. ”Watch for snipers in the town! Glim called out. Based on their last assault, she did not think there would be more sappers stationed in their path. ”They’ll probably try to hit us with ranged attacks in the open fields. They’ll be weak at this range, but they’ll still hurt! Try to stay near cover; use the fences and hedgerows--don’t get pinned down!” She shouted, and then repeated the same general message in Sylvan.

The Mage of the Fae See watched disinterestedly as the squad flattened the picket bugs. They were weak, some even weaker than the fairy corporal that lead them. Irihi sighed and pushed back her cowl as the hammer-weilder--on of their strongest fighters--addressed her, crowing about having smashed her pincer-bug adversary.

Irihi’s feathery brow quirked as she considered whether she appreciated Almedia’s enthusiasm for mayhem or disdained her lack of discernment.

Both. She decided.

She smiled without a trace of humor. {”Yes, you’ll make an excellent exterminator, some day, dearheart,”} she replied, the sneer in her tone perhaps obscured by the archaic sylvan phraseology she used.

Oh this was intolerably beneath her; being assigned to such a motley cru of mongrels and abominations, led by an ephemeral idiotic will-o-the-wisp. Even had she wanted to, she could not have drawn any connection between this so-called battlefield, and the others on which she had served. Were this D’or Oliim, I would have slain them all and used their souls to blast the town to matchsticks and flinders, she thought, bitterly.

But it was not that lost realm of another world. This was an irritating hell to which she had been banished, her powers reduced to mere trivialities. She might be able to rend these mortal’s souls from their bodies, but what then? Something--something that wizard had done--had caused her to forget how to twine their insignificant lives around her fingers. She no longer had the skill to braid and bow their golden threads into slings of obscene power. Oh she could still wade knee-deep in blood, but she never wanted that would not find purpose in such slaughter. Now, here--in this place--she was just a common footsoldier of some degenerate empire, being lead by an obnoxious sprite.

“Feh” Irihi wrinkled her nose and made a sound of disgust as Corporal Glimmerleaf ordered her forward. But forward she went, nonetheless.

Action 1: Backhanded compliment.
Action 2: Sneer.
Action 3: Follow the squad.

The Adversary: ThrowersNo sooner had the squad emerged from the treeline, than they came under ranged fire from the town. As in the forest, the distant Throwers were hurling whatever they found at hand; mostly bricks, chunks of masonry and fieldstone.

Taking cover behind fence or bush would slow their advance on the town, but it was the safest way to approach the devastated village.

Ahead of the squad (to the East) stretched hundreds of feet of fields, open except for stone fences and thick hedgerows. To the north, the edge of the forest stretched to the North before bending to the East. A destroyed wagon lay on a road that lead from forest to town. To the Northeast a green cloud of smoke--similar to their Thrower’s red signal--was beginning to disperse.

The Adverersary: DronesFrom the Southeast came a distant eerie sound. It was a low buzz, like the droning of bees but lower-pitched and multiplied dozens of times. Specks above the horizon to the Southeast grew larger and soon resolved themselves into insectoid shapes as they passed over the shells of broken and fire-scorched buildings of M’lyrna, tracking from South to North, toward the green smoke.

These creatures--though distant--seemed smaller than Pincer or Thrower bugs. They were rounded with rapidly-flapping wings--reminiscent of giant ladybugs.

When she first heard the droning, Glim flinched. She was still holding onto Grubble, and the large purple man would feel her tiny grip on him tighten. ”Grubble, remember what I said, y-you’re coming with me. I’m…” She said quietly.

But something was wrong; this was too soon. Last time the bugs had held back until they were fully exposed with nowhere to run. As they cleared the last of the scrubby trees, Glim felt as though her heart had dropped into her stomach.

The bug bomber drones--the whole reason for their decoy team--were not heading for Bravo Team--they were bearing north; toward Alpha Team, where a green flare was hanging under the leaden fall sky.

Now the corporal understood the meaning of the bug’s signal--the new tactic the monsters had developed in anticipation of being baited. “No… no No NO NO… FUCK!!” Glimmer didn’t explain, didn’t give orders, didn’t hand over command, she simply took off like a shot, winging past Grubble and streaking across the fields, straight toward town, gaining altitude and flying as fast as her tiny wings could drive her. She left a meteoric trail of golden sparks behind her as she took aim at the flight of drones.

“Not them! Us! Not them!” She panted, straining to close the distance to the drones--to bring them within range of her magic.

It was too far, the drones were too fast and too spread out. They would be out of her effective range before she could close the distance. She could hit one of them--but knocking out one would make no difference. She could hit all of them, but there would be no power in her spellcraft. Even so, she had to try, maybe she could get them to turn back toward Bravo team.

Sparkling blue frost mixed with her trail of glittering gold as she launched a [Ice Storm Flux F], praying that the magic would--at the very least--get the drone’s attention. “I’m sorry, everyone!” She gritted.

Summary;
The group reaches the fields surrounding M’lyrna.
They come under long-range fire from four Thrower bugs in the town.
A flight of bomber bugs appears, headed away from the group. Glim leaves the others to try to attract their attention by attacking them with ranged magic.
NOTE: The Throwers in M’lyrna are 1000’ away and require Range D to hit.

There are more bugs in the town. Recommend against trying to go it alone.

As this is quasi-combat, we will do the crossing to town (and anything on the way) narratively. It will probably take 2-3 rounds (as opposed to the 15 turns it would take at normal-size normal speed with advanced rules.)

If you move without cover, or without preparing to dodge or bat back attacks, I'll use a dice mechanic to determine outcomes.

This is kind of a complex narrative. Thanks for bearing with me. Please feel free to discuss or ask questions on discord.

With the bug deader than dead, like, at its deadest, she'd look around. It seemed like the others were handling their stuff as well, which was neat. The fairy was still shouting stuff in incomprehensible language. It's only when it was repeated in Sylvan, that Almeida got the gist of it, as she'd translate it to Terran for Yuna, Valerius and Zjorn. “[The fairy says there's gonna be ranged attacks coming at us in the open fields, so we gotta stay in cover She also says not to get pinned down, but I thought that was more of a bedroom thing to do to folk.]” She had no clue about the military meaning of the last bit. Perhaps she'd misunderstood the language.

The other Fae mage was still confusing her. “{Exterminator?}” That was a word she had yet to learn in Sylvan. Also, the other word again. 'Deartheart' or whatever. “{Thanks dearheart! You too!}” She decided to try return the presumable compliment.

As appealing as it was to play baseball with all the stuff thrown at them, she'd probably not have time to do so. That said, the fairy commander seemed to panic and fly off after some buzzing in the distance. “{What's here deal?}” She asked, wondering why she went after those flying bugs so panicked.

She shrugged. “[I think the big one's in the centre over there, right? Want to race me to it, Yuna? Any time you get hit by something thrown at you, it adds an extra minute though! Also, the loser has to really thoroughly wash the winner's hair next bathhouse we visit!]” That sounded like a fun game. They'd have to run and dodge alike.

Assuming Yuna was on board (because why wouldn't she be), she got ready. “[Ready! Set! GOOOO!!!]” She shout, sprinting off to the nearest cover. Then to the next. And the next. And so on.

Bug Town Defenses Throwers 1-4
The sparkling gold-and-blue comet streaking toward town could not have presented a clearer, albeit small and fast, target. While the squad approaching from the East had initially drawn a few lobbed bricks, now all four Throwers turned their efforts to knocking out the tiny magicker.

Corporal Glimmerleaf was moving in a straight line without cover or evasive maneuvers, but she was tiny and moving quickly. The Throwers would each have a 30% chance of hitting her.(1-4:Miss, 5-6: Hit)

Bug Town Defenses Throwers 1-4
Three out of the four shots flew true and struck the Corporal. Even so, she was light, armored, and at altitude, making it harder for the bricks and chunks of masonry to deal significant damage.

Damage roll (1:None, 2-3: 1Pt, 4-5: 2Pts, 6:3Pts)

The Adversary: DronesThe [Ice Storm F] was broad and damaging--causing a goodly portion of the flight of drones to lose altitude, their progress slowed as their wings became rimed with ice and their armor cracked from the cold. The magical attack was not, however, sufficient to down even a single drone.

The magic and missiles from Alpha Squad were a different story. Dozens of drones were shot down before reaching the dispersing fighters. Area magic, arrows, and crossbow bolts filled the sky while flaming and exploding bug corpses fell like rain.

Even so, the aerial defenses of the northern team were insufficient and more than a dozen drones reached their targets, exploding on contact with the ground or--sometimes--the warrior they targeted.

Type 4 Bug - Drone: All STR A, PRE B, SPD D, Light Armor C
[Bomb B] - Bomb B + STR A + Tech B = BE 16 - 2 to 3 attacks per soldier
Most* of Alpha Squad are dead

The drone flight had overwhelming numbers--enough to penetrate the air defenses--of one squad, but not two. Even then, it was a near thing. While most soldiers of the Northern team were targeted by at least two exploding bugs, Sergeant Ironfoot had scattered his soldiers, making the bomber’s job more difficult. Further, the northern approach to M’lyrna had better cover. Though the dwarf leader died in the conflagration, one or two of the team might have survived the bombing.

The Adversary: Pincer BugsAs the crumping of the explosions died away and smoke rose from the blasted north road, two pairs of Pincer bugs sallied forth from the town, under cover of the Throwers. One pair headed toward the smoking craters of the north road--looking to finish off any survivors from Alpha Team.

The other pair headed east, toward the leaderless Bravo Team. These two split, with one Pincher bug angling toward where Corporal Glimmerleaf had crashed, while the other positioned itself in a gap in the cover on the approach to town.

If Yunesa, Almeida or any others wanted to make it to town without exposing themselves to the Throwers, they would first have to dispatch the Pincher bug blocking their way.

Two Pincher Bugs look for survivors from Alpha Squad
One Pincher Bug heads for Glim’s crash site.
One Pincher Bug blocks Alemeida’s (and anyone else’s) approach to town.

Attacks on the blocking bug may or may not come under fire from Thrower Bugs, depending on how creative you are. Use ranged attacks or make use of narrative cover to avoi

Watching of Reflection had given his farewells to the fair folk of the Caelia Barony, where it had dealt briefly for a singular morning till evening with the circumstance of an apple incident which grew to very odd proportions of magnitude to where it felt ill-equipped to even really understand what was going on. Perhaps had it a clearer understanding of magics could the events become any clearer, but as it was such wasn't really the case at all there. So it traveled once more, heading further south as it had originally planned.

Yet rather then what it had originally expected, the topography of what was known as the 'Protectorate of Ryke' as it was called did not gradually change. On this end where there was sparse forests mingled together with large agricultural fields, or hills nearest to the Paizu mountains where it walked large swaths of grazing land where the various cattle walked upon. Which was suddenly contrasted by the sprawling woods which grew from the area around here. Trees so tall and filled with lives that it was almost as if it were home.

Fungi, moss, forest floor littered by many a many leaves, ivy and ferns which began to obscure its vision as it struggled to walk through the thick vegetation at moments even. Crossings of creeks and rivers sprawling with animals around it, evident by the many droppings and footsprints which were around the area. It was a comfort to return to such a place once more, as it began to trave alongside the Paizu Mountains making its southward pilgrimage yet still.

Things became clearer as its journey led it further southward through this country wasn't at all times the most welcoming it had experienced in some facets, yet in other ways far more so. Many gatherings of people around groves and sprawling villages whose homes were made out of stone which seemed to have jutted out of the soil as if weaved in its lack of jagged edges, or stocky trees whose interior had been slowly worked upon to grant hospise like one would expect from a bird's or other animal's den. Fae who when seeing it had moments of social unacceptance, however few if not all saw it as a person. An odd mingling of sprawling variety of racial difference within this conservative culture, whose existence was based upon nature and a strange ideology it had never heard about. It had heard from back home the strange concepts the beastkin spread about the divine spirits which inhabited the land, and now it saw iconography made manifest of something entirely different.

It brought conversation where it felt it could, and at times it was warmly recepted, though it could feel the difficulty in communication as apparent as day and night. Many fae did not utter a word of common, some seemed insulted by its attempts at conversation within the common language, and those few who were willing speak with it never spoke common natively. Causing the both of them to fumble around to search for words in a language neither thought in. The idea of how very different commerce was handled within the nation brought upon it curiosity, and such was noticeable by its many inquiries.

But its wonder wasn't to last for long, even those who were brash to not communicate in common warned it out of kindness as it headed further southward. Warnings of not heading further there due to horrible monstrosities, creatures which tore apart the land and erased swaths of homes and nature with it. Upon its night of having to make the decision to head further southward or begin its trek westward instead the little critter earnestly struggled. For it above all else wished not for its own demise as many a creatures, to see its family and home once more was what it yearned for; yet to hear of such carnage and destruction and to do little? It barely could stomach such. I

It began to ask around as it wandered further southward, where the destruction and terror was visible as animals fled as far as they could from here. Moments where it was clear nature screamed out when the only sound was that of rushing water and rustling leaves from the winds above. And found itself in the midst of company who would do everything they could to protect their homeland, it knew naught of this people for long, nor was this not its homeland, yet it would fight for it. That it promised to them. And so for the first time in its long arduous journey it stopped. As it spent the following few weeks assisting in guerrilla warfare against the crawling horde.

A defeaning sound. Its ears rang in pain...

Its vision was blurry. As it could only barely look upon the site of destruction. Its eyes having to gaze upon the scattered remains of the people it had spent time together with.

Torn apart by the explosions to pieces of viscera and blood, if the explosions hadn't reduced it to ash and cinders, laid across and around the large patches of black scorched pieces of earth. Trees felled down or chunks blown to splinters.

As it stood the pace of its breathing quickened, it attempted to shudder the ringing noise out of the back of its mind as it looked out upon the forest clearing, where earth had been scorched and the village of nature which once stood there on its last legs infested by the monstrous bugs which defended such matters. Pieces of debris of what had once been buildings, or which had been thrown by the bugs themselves littering the clearing around it.

It felt sick to its stomach. Death was no foreign thing to it... Such had followed it for its entire life. It's body made up by the many lives it had to claim for its own survival. Yet that did not mean that it felt nothing upon such a sight. But death did not need to follow it.

On high alert, it began to see through the clearing, monstrous bugs whose shapes towered across some of the pieces of debris, began to stampede towards this direction. And another sight higher in the sky, as a barely familiar visage of the smallest of pixies began to fall out of the sky, into the rased field and the sight of an addition lancer bug beginning to make its way toward the direction.

It could still save someone.

Watching began to rush across the forest clearing upon all fours, climbing and sprinting across the various parts of the terrain it needed to, but attempting to minimize the visible height of itself among the debris to attempt to hide its rush towards Iona from the two lancer bugs who made their way toward the northern end of the clearing. In an attempt to intercede the lancer bug which was making its way to Corporal Iona. In the hopes it could still save one life, even with the grueling knowledge of what this mission had been about in the first place which had sat wrong with it for the entire part of this.
