Dragons of the Wild

Moon woke later, to find herself wrapped beneath one of her partners wings. He hadn't needed to prove his love, yet he had made sure she knew that he wanted this life with her, and there were no doubts in her mind that he would love their hatchlings with every breath he took, with every beat of his heart. Gazing up at him from where she laid, she smiled, blowing a gentle breath of her mist into his mouth, both to wake him, and help his throat

Cloud stirred from his comfort as something - someone - nudged his mouth open and filled his lungs with cool, sweet relief. Still, he jerked a bit in surprise, eyes snapping open to stare into the silver orbs of the dragonette wrapped in his wings. Giving her a quick, affectionate lick across the snout he reared back and jawned, jaws cracking ominously as he flexed them.

"Thanks," he rumbled, before hugging his mate to his chest again. "That answer your question?" He joked.

Moon watched him wake, watching with pure appreciation in her eyes as he woke and moved, purring warmly at the lick she received on her snout. Curled to his chest, she nuzzled her head over the scales, loving the feel of the hard armour-like items against her own. Whilst his were indeed almost armour like, Moons were smaller slightly, and weaker than his. But she wasn't built for fighting like he clearly was, she was made for agility, for stealth and for defence. She wasn't a warrior like him, she was a gentle healer, who needed her large strong mate.

Giving a happy coo as she was pulled back to his chest, she bobbed her head, "Defiantly" She purred, reaching up to lick at a dirty patch on his cheek, dried blood from their earlier meal, which had been bothering her for a while, seeing as it had been stopping her from admiring his scales properly

"Taste good, do I?" Cloud teased when Moon licked his cheek - and not just a quick affectionate touch, but roughly, thoroughly, like he would lick a salt-rock on a hot day... Or more accurately, the way a mother would clean her hatchlings. Thinking of her, mothering their hatchlings, did interesting things to his stomach - but he forced the feeling down. If he gave in every time she sparked the fire in him, they would never get anything done. Speaking of which...

"Where did the cow end up?"

Moon hummed, "Taste like fire….and smoke…and warmth…" She listed, "And my alpha" She finished, purring as he licked her. She gave a amused purr at that, the lick reminding her of how her mother used to clean her, with sure, rough licks that were full of affection and pride. She realised she'd be doing that soon, cleaning her babies, and it made her purr in happiness at the thought. Jumping as Cloud spoke, she snapped out of her thoughts,

"Over there" She responded, craning her neck, spotting the tail of their prey

Cloud rumbled in amusement as Moon recited his taste, and gave her a couple of thorough licks of his own.

"Spring brook," he declared after the first lick, "rain cloud," after the second, "cool," after the third, and then he nuzzled her behind her ear. "My treasure."

After she helpfully pointed out their misplaced tribute, he rolled on top of her. Careful not to crush her he straddled the smaller dragon and gave her one last nuzzle, before moving off, swaggering after the cow like only a young alpha could.

Moon seemed amused as spoke of her own taste, and made a gentler purring noise in comparison to her mates rumbling. She loved him, and her eyes brightened as he once again called her his 'treasure' as though she was the best find of his life.

Her thoughts were paused when he rolled over her, though she knew he wouldn't hurt her. Her beliefs were assured when he simply nuzzled her. She purred and licked his muzzle, before watching as he moved confidently to their prey, and she followed him, with a happy sway in her movements

Having already walked some distance, Cloud only wandered a few diameters more, basking in Moon's presence all the while, before he began looking for a good place to dig in and build a smoke-pit. All it took was a decent meadow, not too exposed, and once he'd found he dumped the carcass in the middle of it, and quickly blasted it with searing hot smoke, getting rid of the flies which had been starting to congregate around it during the day. Then he turned to his mate.

"We need to pull down some trees. You branch them while I dig." He commanded, trying to get into the role of Alpha - even though, again, a flock of two wasn't much of a flock at all. He considered it practice for when he'd have to keep all their little hatchlings in order - Moon would be a great mother, but she was too kind. He could imagine her trying to discipline the little rascals, only to end up giving in the moment their tails and wings began to droop.

Watching her mate as he moved the carcass to a new position, watching with amazement as he blew hot smoke at it to shoo away flies. She believed he was special, even when able to only breathe smoke out. But doing that itself was different and amazing, like the rest of her alpha. She was so into watching him that she almost missed the order, and nodded.

She hurried over to the closest tree, and began to do her work, tugging at the branches, snarling viciously at them when a few refused to let go of the tree, and these she stood on her hind legs for, slashing at them with her claws. She hoped she was doing this right, for she had never done this before

Smiling gently at his mate's enthusiasm, Cloud moved up next to her, buffing at her with his head.

"Easy, treasure; no rush. 'Sides, should bring them down first, easier to reach." Said and done, he gently shouldered her out of the way, and then reared up against the tree, braced himself against the ground, and started pushing. His blood thundered in his ears and through his muscles, his magic smoldered in his blood and sinews; his breath might be singularly unimpressive, but when it came to raw, physical power, there were few but the oldest and largest of bull dragons that could compare. And if Moon had made him her Alpha, then he was damn well going to prove himself worthy of it!

The tree groaned, then croaked, then cracked, and with a final, drawn-out moan and mighty #CRASH#, fell over. Trying not to show how much effort it actually took, or preen too much for that matter, Cloud pushed himself off the tree with a huff.

"A couple more, then I'll start digging." He grunted. "You can do the smaller ones easy," he nodded towards a copse of younger trees, growing where a mighty old oak had probably stood before falling to age and sickness.

Moons eyes were wide at the raw power her alpha displayed. She watched as his muscles tensed as he leant against the tree she had been struggling with. She knew he was powerful, yet he still amazed her. She was tempted to nuzzle him to see if she could feel the power, but didn't in case she accidentally distracted him.

Waiting until he was finished, she bobbed her head and licked his shoulder, before taking his advice. She trotted over to the smaller, weaker trees, and mimicked his actions. Not knowing how to use her magic like he had, she instead tried to use her weight. She managed to push over the first one, and made an excited noise

Cloud paused in the wrecking of his second tree to watch his mate imitate his actions with a young alder tree.

"Like that," he rumbled in approval, punctuating his words with the #CRASH# of another of the old oaks being brought low. Once it was down, he paused, lying on top of the thick trunk, before moving on to the third. His body protested, but he stoically ignored it in favour of pressing on.

Moon chirped happily, like a little hatchling receiving praise from an alpha, when he told her she was doing it correctly.

With a spring in her step, she moved onto the next tree, repeating her movements. It seemed to make the female happy when it fell, and she pranced in a circle, fluttering her wings with pride. Chirping, she moved onto another tree, again seeming excited when it hit the ground

Cloud remained on top of the oak for a minute, eagerly drinking in his mate's happiness. Still, he had his own part to take care of, and so he forced himself out of his comfortable position draped over the fallen tree, and walked over to the next. Once more rearing up, he placed his fore-claws high on the trunk, and - bracing magic and body both against the otherwise soft and yielding dirt - began pushing.

Perhaps the tree was slightly older and thicker than the other two, or maybe it was younger and stronger, or perhaps it was just that Cloud had already exerted himself twice in the last few diameters, several times more over the past day in an entirely new but even more enthusiastic way, and before that, spent the better part of a month wounded and starving.

Whatever the reason though, when Cloud pushed, his body began protesting, ever more vehemently. Cloud stubbornly ignored it, forcing himself to push harder, to ignore the muscles burning with exertion and the bones and tendons screaming in pain. He couldn't be weak! Not now, that he finally had a mate, someone who recognised him, someone who wanted him! Wanted him to be her -Alpha-! Drawing deeper and deeper of his rapidly diminishing magic to compensate, he began to snarl. The snarl became a growl, the growl a roar, and the roar just continued to grow in strength, until the tree finally gave in with a thunderous #CRASH#-

-followed by a strangely ominous silence, as Cloud likewise collapsed, silently twitching and shaking in pain as his entire body cramped up.

Moon had been trying to push down a third small tree when she heard him roar. She had jumped, wings open as if ready to fly away from danger, before she realised who was roaring, and relaxed, watching him.

She watched him in awe for a few moments, chirping softly as the tree fell.

Then stopped in shock as her mate fell too.

Rushing forward to his fallen body, she panicked, not knowing what to do with his twitching form. He looked to be in pain, but she could see no wound, so she wasn't sure her healing breath would work. But she tried anyway, taking in a deep breath, then releasing the mist over his twitching muscles. This she repeated a few times, before she went to his head and nuzzled him, spare mist leaking from her mouth

Cloud could dimly feel his mate approach, but it was as distant and fleeting as the summer sun in a winter storm. His body was pain, pain wrapped around agony, and it was all he could do to stay conscious, cursing himself for an arrogant fool. Then the pain flared up again, and all thoughts ceased.

Suddenly, a cool breeze swept over him, easing his suffering - not ending it perhaps, but giving him hope, reminding him that the pain was temporary. Again and again it washed over him, each time making just a little easier to think, a little easier to feel. Then he felt a small muzzle nuzzling him, and the last of the pain lifted like a fog, banished by the warmth of the sun.

Which left him ling curled up next to the felled tree, body exhausted and still-twitching with the memory of pain, while his mate - his treasure, his adorable, beautiful, Tiamat-given Moon - breathing tiny puffs of white, near-exhausted mist over his aching neck.

"S'rry, M'nn," Cloud mumbled through gritted teeth, shame and love warring with the pain of his body for attention in his mind.

"Don't apologise Cloud" Moon said softy, not speaking too loud, as she drew in another breath and blew it over his body, trying to help to ease his pain, "Rest... I'll do the other trees" she assured, running her tongue gently over his muzzle, feeling his warm scales before she went back to the trees.

She began to push them down frantically, as quickly as her tired body would allow, staying to the smaller trees. She knew the quicker she finished, the quicker she could get Cloud back to their den, and the quicker she could care for him there. Every so often she'd pause in her work to run over to him, breathing over him again with her mist, hoping to help, before she returned to her work.

Once sure that there were enough trees, she wobbled to her partner, now exhausted and aching herself, and laid beside him, tiredly drawing another breath to blow over her partner, before tucking herself to his side, closing her eyes

Cloud was half-insensate, and only notice Moon telling him not to worry before vanishing off. He thought he could hear her crashing through the forest, though he didn't know why she would do that? Maybe she was abandoning him? But no, she was back, covering him in blessedly cool mist, slowly, ever so slowly relieving the agony of his broken body. And then she was gone again. Why was she crashing through the forest? He didn't know.

The pain made it hard to think, hard to feel anything but shame and despair, and it seemed to continue forever, while Moon continued to crash and smash and huff and puff just out of sight, only to suddenly appear, reassuring whispers, gentle nuzzling, and the sweet mist shrouding him, before disappearing again.

Finally, the silence fell again, and once more she appeared, panting heavily. Tiredly she approached him, and after breathing a single, wispy-thin layer of mist over him, curled up next to him, and seemingly went to sleep.

Cloud felt his heart soar into the sky, leaving his mangled body behind as his spirit flew freely into the sun. A single fat, sizzling hot drop trailing from the corner of his eye as he weakly shuffled closer, wrapping himself around her petite coils.

She hadn't left him. She still wanted him.

Moon smiled slightly as he wrapped his large body around her, shaking her head slightly as she felt something boiling hot and wet land on her head. Shaking it off, not liking too much heat, she turned her tired gaze to Clouds face, realising that it had been a tear. Her eyes saddened, wondering what had made him want to cry. Had he thought she wouldn't come back?

With that sad idea in mind, she nuzzled him gently, wary of his pain, and curled closer to him once more, tucking her head against his chest, listening closely to his strong heartbeat, which filled her mind with joy, and assured her that he was ok.

She fell asleep to the rhythm of it, the gentle sounding thuds relaxing her to the point that she could simply allow her exhaustion to flow through her, as she tucked her tail to her belly, subconsciously protecting her growing babies, falling asleep within seconds

Hours later, Cloud slowly came back to his senses, his body feeling better though still wracked with pain. He was lying in the meadow, next to the last of the fallen oaks, wrapped protectively around the cool, gently snoozing form of his mate. The sky was still mostly blue, but it was getting gloomier - and colder - so night was fast approaching. Fortunately, while the prospect of not sleeping in their lair - especially because of his weakness - offended his sensibilities, there was no reason for them not to remain in the forest for the night.

The perk of being the apex-predators in the forest.

Thus, Cloud merely shifted slightly, quietly wincing at the ache in his muscles, before laying his head back down next to his mate's, and tried to relax. Slowly, Cloud drifted off into slumber again - gently, this time, sussed by the lullaby of Moon's breathing.

Moon seemed to stir as he moved around her a little, as if sensing her hurt alpha was awake. Mist leaked from her mouth, flowing out into the cool air, and swirling around. Some of it curled to her mates body, disappearing when it got close, relieving a little of his pain, whilst the rest spiralled into the sky above the slumbering creatures. She shifted at his side, feeling him move as well, and curled all the closer as she felt his head beside hers, and pressed her smaller body against his warm scales, before falling back into her deep sleep

An unknown number of hours later, Cloud slowly stirred awake to find the sky dark and full of twinkling stars. The forest was full with the noise of the nocturnal beasts that made their home in there - most of them so far beneath a dragon's notice so as to be unafraid of the presence of the two sleeping in the meadow. While his body still ached, it was more the faint, lingering pain of healing, not the acute agony that made him feel as though he was on the verge of death. He stayed where he lay, soaking in the presence of his mate, before gently nuzzling her behind the jaw.

"You awake?" He quietly murmurred, not wanting to interrupt her sleep if she wasn't.

Feeling a gentle nuzzle behind her jaw, Moon slowly opened her eyes, sleepy. She snuggled up to her mates warm body, her own sweating a little. Her cold body didn't do well if she stayed in a heated place too long, but for the moment she was fine, cold mist swirling out of her mouth to cool her body as she nodded to her mates softly asked question. She hadn't been awake before, but it hadn't been his fault that she had woke, she was a light sleeper anyway. Looking up at him, she noticed he looked a little better, "You okay Cloud?" She asked softly

"Been better," Cloud grumbled, before continuing in a softer tone. "But yes. Thanks." He made no move to get up, perfectly content to remain snuggling on the ground for the time being.

Moon nodded, content that he was feeling a little better, or at least seemed to be. She nuzzled closer to him for a few moments, and breathed out a few wisps of her healing breath over his tired body. Most of her magic, that was put into her breath, was depleted, and she barely had enough to make those few wisps. She had used it all before she had slept, trying her hardest to get rid of the trees, and to care for her alpha at the same time.

After a moment she shuffled away, "Stay here a moment… I'll find water" She mumbled, unable to make a ice cube for them to lick. She slowly stood, stretching her lithe body out, trying to get rid of the dull aches of her muscles. She nodded, licking her mate on the muzzle, before she trotted off toward where she believed the river to be. It didn't take her long to find the scent of rushing water, but when she reached it she realised she had a problem. SHe couldn't carry it back to Cloud.

She searched around then, and her eyes brightened as she noticed a large area of moss. That would soak up water, enough for her mate to lap up from it. So, she clawed it up quickly, dipping it carefully into the river. Once it was soaked, she placed it down briefly, so that she could take a few long sips from the river, before she scooped it back up, and ran back toward where her mate was, following her older scent
