The 20 Questions

*What clan does your character belong to?

The Crane

*How would others describe your character’s appearance?

If the daughters of the Doji were lined up against a wall, the first thing anyone would notice about about Doji Kiriko is that she stands head and shoulders below most of her fellows. However, as a skilled courtier, she takes every care that very few people meet her for the first time in this manner so that her slight stature does not become the focus of their thoughts about her. If one encounters her sitting, one is far more likely to see the intensity of her light blue eyes and the perfectly arranged white-dyed locks of hair artfully stacked on top of her head. A more astute guest might, however, notice a slight scar on her cheek: the legacy of a youth where she failed to live up to the famous pacifism of her namesake.

*Is your character a bushi, shugenja, monk, or courtier?

She is very much a Courtier, though if her talent for poetry had blossomed at an earlier age, it is quite likely that she would have been sent to one of the Kakita schools of poetry instead of training with her family's famous courtiers.

*What family does your character belong to?

The Doji.

*What is your character’s main motivation?

To leave the world with more beautiful than she found it.

*Who is the person your character trusts most?

Daidoji O-Ushi, a wizened old woman with skin not unlike-shoe leather, and yet still able to act with the grace and artistry one expects of one who has trained and been trained by the finest Courtiers of Crane. While at the School, O-Ushi shielded from the harsh reality of standing out in a crowd of sharp-tongued girls, and taught Kiriko the skills to stand among them on her own.

*What are your character’s greatest strength and weakness?

Perhaps it is because she has never had the long, swift stride of a taller person, but she has gained a strong sense of dedication and persistence. Though it may take her longer to achieve her goals than it would for another, she *will* achieve them.

Underneath the serene countenance of the well-trained Doji Courtier, there rests in Kiriko an extraordinary temper. These days she channels anger and frustration into her poetry, and while she would never admit as much, her best pieces have come out of her worst experiences. As has many, many failed creations.

*What does your character think of bushido?

Adherence to Bushido is evidence of a beautiful soul, and as such violating Bushido is marring something breautiful and treasured.

*What is your character’s opinion of his own clan?

While she admires Lady Doji and aspires to live up to the ideals she set forward at the foudning of the Empire, Kiriko has felt what it is like to be an imperfect flower in the Crane's garden, and as such has rather more sympathy with those her fellows would scorn than most other Doji Courtiers.

*Is your character married?

Kiriko has only just completed her Gempuku ceremony, and her parents have not yet told her anything about their plans for her. Her brother insists that she will be married off to some half-gaijin Unicorn before the year is out, but with her new assignment to the Imperial Court, she personally hopes that she might be able to marry into the Imperial Court.

*Does your character have any prejudices?

PArtly because she considers herself an artist, Kiriko associates the creation of beauty with beauty of spirit. She is more likely to trust someone who can write poetry or do masterful calligraphy, regardless of their moral character.

*To whom does your character owe the most loyalty?

The leader of the Crane delegation to the Imperial Court. Kiriko is determined to prove herself a valueable member of her Clan on this, her first real assignment.

*What are your character’s favorite and least favorite things?

She loves the writing and reading of poetry above almost anything else, and things of beauty in general. Likewise, she is offended at their destruction by others, and perhaps even more by those who refuse to appreciate it and live only for tangible things.

The familiar patterns of a perfectly executed tea ceremony bring her an inner peace beyond that most people draw from it, but the taste of tepid or even cold tea is distasteful to her beyond reason.

*Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?

Since everyone tends to act according to the same protocol and etiquette, the minor and inoffensive details of behavior tend to get noticed more. Does your character bite his lip when he’s deep in thought? Perhaps he has a particular phrase he greets everyone with. When his hands aren’t doing anything, what does he do with them?

*What about your character’s emotions?

Through harsh self-discipline, Kiriko has mastered her emotions, but her anger remains easy to kindle. As a result, she also rarely displays any great amount of positive emotions, preferring to keep everything hidden behind a serene face, and letting it come out only in poetry or solitude.

*How would you handle a subordinate's improper behavior?

Growing up a Crane means growing up sheltered from improper behavior. Throughout her life, Kiriko has been surrounded by beauty and order, and she has no great experience with the violation of either. That said, she would cleave to Bushido when she encounters such a situation, showing compassion to those who have wronged her if they are sincere in owning their mistakes.

*How would your character’s parents describe her?

She is a girl with great potential, but there may come a day when she must choose between her art and her duty, and on that day she will be tested, and they are not sure if she will choose correctly.

*What is your character’s highest ambition?

To recite her poetry before the Empress.

*How religious is your character?

When she was a child and felt great sadness, anger or passion, Kiriko attempted to find solace in the words of the Tao, in her ancestors and in the spirits of beautiful and calm places, but none of those helped her. It was only through her poetry that she could master herself and her emotions, and so she cares little more for religion than is necessary for propriety.

*If you could, what advice would you give your character?

Beauty is useless if you're dead.
