ep.1 - The Place That Hates Light

The metal floor rumbled underneath her feet; she held onto the console, barely keeping her balance in the sandals she’d been so excited to find sitting perfectly in the middle of her closet. She assumed that they had been put out for her on purpose- the Doctor had said the TARDIS was fond of her, and who was she to argue with the time machine towing her around space? Cassie was finding it hard to believe that the TARDIS cared about her, though, considering she and the Doctor were currently being tossed around the console room like wet rags. Maybe she was trying to break her ankles…

The breaks screeched upon landing and the Doctor looked at her expectantly. “Ready to head out?”

She smiled back, bee-lining to the doors in lieu of an answer, excited to see the dazzling beach on the other side-

But stopped abruptly in her tracks upon seeing the view, causing the Doctor to bump into her back. There was silence for a moment while they took in their very not-beachy surroundings. They had landed somewhere eerie; somewhere unfortunately dark. A foggy moor without a soul in sight. Cassie finally broke the quiet; “What kind of beach is this!?”

The Doctor took a moment, replying in a subdued tone, “Planet. Veran 4. Very much not a beach.”

Silence fell between them again.

“...I’m gonna put my sneakers on.” Cassie said; she ducked around the Doctor and headed for her room.

The Doctor leaned against the console, pretending to be doing something that actually made sense. He was not a man of anger but there was no denying this situation made steam blow out of his ears. Sixth time was three more than three and he swore to himself that he wouldn’t let the girl go through this more than three times. He failed and all he wanted to do was throw the wrench sitting on the console; scream and shout and apologize; fix it.

But it was obvious that this would lead to nowhere but a seventh time and then the girl would be even more wronged than she already had been.

Instead, the man took a deep breath in, let out a large sigh and a forced on smile before making his way to the doors. His smile didn’t last long because, for some reason, Cassie thought they were going to a beach.

Now, Veran 4 was no beach; in fact, it was a largely rocky planet with most of its water in rivers and cloud storms. Despite it, or perhaps because of it, Veran 4 was always the most beautiful planet in its bisolar system, and the two suns it was orbiting would always give the colonies on the planet more than enough energy to sustain life.

What the Doctor and Cassie were looking at was a void of darkness. Pure and utter darkness as if the TARDIS managed to materialize in an undiscovered cave.

“But…Hm.” He contemplated saying anything and decided against it. A glance at the monitor told him that they weren’t in a cave and that there wasn’t a secret visual impairment force field—they were on the surface of Veran 4, right outside of the Zeta Colony.

The light from inside of the TARDIS revealed yellow, shriveled, dead grass on the floor and a suspicious mist low on the ground that was slowly making its way inside. Everything else was hidden by the darkness.

While Cassie looked for her sneakers in her room, the Doctor made his way to and rummaged under the console until he found exactly what he was looking for: a helmet with a light on it, and a flashlight. When Cassie came back he promptly placed the pink helmet into her arms and exited the TARDIS, not wanting to hear any complaints and hoping this would cause her to accept the arrangement he decided upon.

Cassie appeared back in the console room, converse on and double-knotted. “‘Kay, I’m good now- oh-”

There was a neon pink helmet plopped in her arms. She noted the flashlight in the Doctor’s hands but didn’t get to ask why he didn’t want to match with her. She hadn’t been traveling with him long (maybe a month close to a year at best), and he didn’t seem like one for fashionable eccentricities, but even so…matching was fun.

Putting the helmet on her head, she messed with it until the light came on. The smoke trickling in and around her ankles at the TARDIS doors was strange; she almost hesitated stepping onto the dead grass outside. The blue door shut on its own behind her. Catching up with the Doctor, and distractedly trying to take in their badly lit surroundings as she clumsily avoided tripping over rocks and sticks on the ground, she asked “Are you not gonna wait for me- and what’s Veran 4? Where are we going?”

“You did say you wanted to see a planet, did you not?” The man looked at the girl, shining the flashlight right at her face, observing it for a moment, and then turning back around and pointing the light towards the seemingly endless darkness everywhere around them. “Now, it’s understandable that you might be disappointed because, well, because you can’t see anything.” The man laughed at his own words but quickly stifled his laugh and continued. “But me, you see, I’m not disappointed. I’m confused. And I don’t like being confused.”

After his monologue, he continued stepping forward on the dormant, yellow grass, through which more and more holes seemed to be scattered the further the two got away from the TARDIS. The large man watched his step carefully, yet walked as if he weren’t even paying attention. “So…” He turned back around after stopping, and once again pointed the flashlight at the girl’s face. “What do you reckon all these are?” He asked, obviously referring to the palm-sized holes in the ground.

He didn’t know if the girl could feel it, but he definitely could—this darkness had a presence, it wasn’t just darkness in the full sense of the word. It was darkness that made the small hairs on the back of your neck stand up; the darkness that filled up your lungs halfway and made your breaths erratic and shallow. It was the darkness around the campfire after a scary story where you think anything and everything is out to get you.

Slowly, it creeped up, and giggles could be heard in the distance.

She squinted as the Doctor shined his flashlight on her face, quickly reaching forward to redirect the beam somewhere else. “I dunno, ‘m just trying not to trip on them…”

Since they were stopped, she took a moment to properly observe their surroundings. More dead grass, more holes appearing, more darkness. She looked back in the direction of the TARDIS; it occupied her attention for a fleeting moment. The light on its roof could just barely be seen from where they were standing. She was telling them to come back.

“…uh. Groundhogs?” she replied to the Doctor’s question as she turned to face him again. They obviously lived in holes in the ground, and it was a much happier solution than the holes being home to the giggling she could hear in the distance- wait.

Suddenly, it seemed to get impossibly darker. Her arms erupted into goosebumps. Either she was losing her mind, or they were in trouble. “Please tell me you don’t hear that.”

But the look on the Doctor’s face didn’t look very promising, and Cassie felt herself tensing as she asked, “…run?”
