Ghost // Male // Age 18 // Training Instructor // Erudite to Dauntless

“Hey, kid? You all right? Nod if you can hear me, else I’m callin’ an ambulance.”
There was a whisper of cloth and then warm fingers were wedging themselves beneath Ghost’s chin, probing his neck for a pulse. Alarm flared up in him bright as a sunrise. His heart skipped a beat and he instinctively flinched away from the touch, but the suddenness of the movement sent a spasm of pain through his body, starting in his ankle and radiating up the length of his left leg. If he had had a little more control over his fine motor skills, Ghost would have scowled in confusion as he racked his brain in an effort to remember when and how he might have hurt his ankle, and drew up at a blank.
“Whoa, kid, relax. I ain’t gonna hurt you. Just wanted to see if you was still breathin’, is all.”
Ghost attempted to crack an eye open and immediately regretted it when white-hot light flooded in. Scrunching his eyes shut again, he buried his face in the crook of his elbow, but the brief glimpse of his surroundings was enough to determine that he was lying on his back on the stone-cold floor of the Dauntless compound. He wasn’t sure how much time had elapsed since he’d left the lower levels reserved for the training and housing of initiates, but he had, fortunately, collapsed nowhere that an initiate might accidentally stumble upon his unconscious form. He intentionally reminded himself of this morsel of good luck as he attempted to roll onto his hands and knees and a wave of nausea swept through him. Ghost let his head hang limply between his shoulders and took a long, shaky breath of the stale subterranean air, fighting off a dangerous twinge in his stomach.
“Kid, is there somebody I can call for you? A concerned mom or pop, a delinquent friend, or an ambulance maybe? Because you look a lil’ green around—”
“Call an ambulance and die,” Ghost panted in a voice like ground glass. The delivery of his threat would have been decent if he hadn’t dissolved into scraping coughs immediately after. He braced himself and then managed to pry his eyes open. Tears fractured his vision, but through them he caught his first glimpse of his hopeful rescuer, a man with a goatee in the nondescript blue coveralls of a maintenance worker.
The man’s face soured. “Well, fuck you too, asshole,” he sneered as Ghost first pushed into a crouch, and then with some wobbling, to his feet. His head hurting too much to muster an appropriately scathing reply, Ghost turned his back on the man and headed down the first tunnel stretching away into blackness that he encountered. He had no idea where it was going, but he quickly decided anywhere was better than here. The last thing he needed prior to the Parks job was getting in an altercation that resulted in a stranger remembering his face well enough to pick him out of a lineup.
The Parks job! Ghost thought with another prickle of panic. He had no idea how long he’d been out; might his rendezvous time with Blair already come and gone? And here he had spoken so sternly to Blair in the simulation room this morning, certain that if the job went awry it would have been her doing. He folded back the cuff of his coat, where the little silver hands of his watch pointed at 2:03. Relief and urgency battled inside him. At least he hadn’t missed showtime, but he’d still have to haul ass to have everything ready for three o’clock. Ghost felt blessed that last night, after purchasing the truth and memory serums from the same factionless dealers from whom he acquired his lull, he’d had the good foresight to hide them away from his apartment, in the event that Jeremy Daniels did a follow-up search to ensure that it was free of illicit substances. Having to return to his apartment right now would have just about guaranteed that he missed the meetup with Blair.
Ghost followed the twisting, turning corridor until he arrived at a staircase that would lead all the way to the upper levels of the compound, where there were ground-floor exits to the outside. As he ascended, he retrieved a vial from his breast pocket, flipped the cap up, and tipped the translucent liquid contents down his throat. Snorting lull made Ghost feel less than genteel, so he had dissolved the lull into water beforehand in preparation of oral consumption. He swallowed, and the burning sensation that filled his throat was only half due to the astringent taste sliding down it. Ferris Jacobi had been a scared and scarred twelve-year-old boy who had just watched the brutal murders of his parents when he’d promised himself that he would never be helpless again. And here, six years later, he was a slave to a drug that took the lives of the factionless on a semi-regular basis. It was true that Ghost was no longer at the mercy of another human being, but he was just as weak as he had been as a naive and stupid kid. The only difference was that by now he should have known better than to think himself strong and powerful. Self-loathing coursed through him, because Ghost knew that his weakness was the kind that was correctable only through death; his addiction would take him to his grave.
Unlike the previous days of this week, the summer heat was pleasant instead of oppressive. The sunlight was the color of butterscotch, and a warm breeze kissed Ghost’s face when he let the exit door fall shut behind him. Trying not to look too purposeful in his wanderings to any possible onlookers, Ghost began circling the compound building, which stabbed into the sky like a dark dagger. Eventually he arrived at a hunk of wall that had been spray-painted with a gang logo of a heart with devil horns, and he proceeded fourteen paces to the right of it. There, a loose piece of brick gave way beneath Ghost’s prodding fingers, and he unearthed the sturdy cigar box that he had planted there last night, containing the serums that would make his and Blair’s interrogation of Obadiah Parks possible. The security camera of imposing proportions that loomed almost directly above him had been disabled for as long as Ghost had been living in the compound; he knew because he’d been the one to cut the wires himself. This was the door he always reentered the compound through after a drug deal, and he didn’t like the idea of someone being able to track the pattern of his comings and goings.
Ghost replaced the brick, stood, and cast a furtive glance to both sides. The only answer his questioning stare received was that from the wind. Moving at a brisk walk, he headed southeast, toward the intersection of Twentieth and Magnolia Street.

* * *

The only sign of damage on the ZT Valor was a shattered passenger-side mirror as Ghost glided up beside a black-clad figure waiting at a deserted corner about halfway between the Dauntless compound and Baneberry. This was his third driveby in anticipation of Blair’s arrival—stopping for longer than a few minutes would have attracted unwanted attention—and Ghost liked to think that he was finally getting the hang of timing right-angle turns. Embarrassing truth be told, this was the second car that he had hotwired in the space of forty minutes. It had been a humble reminder of his own youth for Ghost to successfully break into a car and bypass the ignition with the help of a screwdriver only to belatedly discover that the car operated on manual transmission. Ghost could barely drive automatic; a stick shift was far beyond his abilities.
And so he had come upon the equally inconspicuous gray Valor, which had admittedly been slightly more inconspicuous before Ghost had clipped the rearview mirror clean off. But considering the fact that he had driven only twice before in his life, Ghost would consider himself lucky so long as he didn’t crash at all today.
He flipped the switch to unlock the car doors, and Blair sprang inside as fast as a spark of lightning, clearly not wanting to linger in plain sight for any longer than she had to. “You’re two minutes and twenty-five seconds late,” Ghost remarked with a surly glance at his watch. In the rearview mirror he met her turquoise eyes and gave a disapproving shake of his head. “Time is of the essence during heists. You’ll have to work on that before you ever entertain thoughts as a career criminal, Miss Avalon.” He looked over her all-black attire with a disapproving eye. “I didn’t realize we were shooting a ninja movie today. Do you think you could try to look any more suspicious if I paid you?” Blair started to retort something about how it would be abnormal for a Dauntless member not to wear black, to which Ghost tersely replied, “We’re a long way from Dauntless, and we’re only going to get farther. Look, if you don’t think you can do this, get out of the car now. If Parks is already on his way to Washington Park under the assumption of meeting with you, then theoretically I can handle everything from here on out by myself.”
It had been two years since Ghost’s last job of this proportion, and he knew that pre-heist nerves were making him irascible. Don’t take it out on Blair. She’s already been so brave in just agreeing to this insane plan, Ghost reminded himself. He closed his eyes and slowly exhaled. “My apologies. I shouldn’t be so hard on you.” His fingers itched to worry at Jarvis’s gold bracelet, but before they could he turned around in his seat so that he was looking at Blair. Suddenly his face lit up like a candle. “If you don’t mind telling me,” Ghost began with a slight twitch of his lips, “how ever did you get Parks to agree to meet with you? I wish to learn whatever I can about my foes prior to opposing them.”

Bloom

Mood: Worried

Location: Testing Center

Interactions: Scotty

Looking at the list of names she had been handed at the start of the day by Ghost, Bloom noted that she had one more initiate to work with and the name made her smile softly. Natalie, or Scotty, was Amity born just like she was. She didn’t know the girl well, but she prayed her time in the faction had not been anything like what Bloom and her family endured. The girl had been around the bar a few times with some of the other initiates and was always polite and kind, but Bloom could tell she also had a fire to her, a drive that Bloom believed could certainly give her an edge. Cleaning up the space from Poppy’s simulation the newest instructor picked up her chart and walked over to the testing room door.

“Natalie.” She called into the crowd of initiates, her eyes locking onto the girl who was pacing the hall. Bloom could instantly tell she was nervous, it buzzed in the air and practically rolled off each of the initiates. As Natalie approached her Bloom gave her a comforting smile and stepped to the side to allow her into the room. Without a word, the young brunette took a seat in the testing chair and leaned back, the soundless signal that she was ready to go. Typing a few things into the program to get it ready for the simulation only took Bloom a minute before she was at Scotty’s side with the syringe. “This is gonna sting for a moment.” She warned gently before injecting the initiate with the serum.

Less than a moment later Natalie was unconscious in the chair and Bloom sat down to watch the screen and all that was happening in the initiate's mind. The scene started out simple enough with Natalie getting dressed and grabbing a suitcase from her closet. “Running away?” Bloom muttered with curiosity. Soon after the simulation took a darker turn as Natalie called out the name Sam and seemed to be being stalked by some unseen figure in the corn. When the girl took off running the heart monitor spiked and Bloom’s gaze shifted between that and the scene before her. She could understand why she was afraid, most people would be in that sort of situation. When she tripped and looked up Bloom’s hand covered her mouth at the sight of the mutilated corpse hanging before Natalie in the simulation. Based on the way the young girl reacted this person was someone she knew and cared for deeply. Bloom’s heart broke for her and wondered who this person was and if they were alright in the world outside of the simulation. For several minutes Natalie sobbed in a ball in her simulation and Bloom was tempted to reach out to the girl but resisted for fear that it might disturb her test. In time, however, Natalie managed to gather herself and got to her feet. She took several deep breaths and wiped away her tears looking like she was ready to keep moving.

That was the final scene of the simulation before Natalie’s eyes fluttered open. Standing up Bloom took a step closer to the young woman. “Careful, don’t get up too quickly.” She advised in a soothing voice remembering that the serum could sometimes make people a little groggy or dizzy when they first wake. She wanted to ask so many questions, find out if Natalie needed anything, but alas that wasn’t her place at the moment. “No need to apologize, you did well.” Bloom attempted to assure her with an encouraging smile painted upon her lips. It seemed that the word brought Scotty little comfort as she got to her feet and excused herself rather quickly. Bloom sighed and leaned against the counter as the door closed behind her.

Thorn

Mood: Regret

Location: Testing Center

Interactions: Charlie

Thorn looked up and smiled sweetly when he heard Charlie’s voice call his name. Fear simulations weren’t fun but getting to be around Charlie was a delight even if it meant facing one of his greatest fears to do so. He slowly set up from where he leaned against the wall, hiding a hiss of pain as he did so, and walked over to her. For a moment as he walked, he forgot about the cuts and bruises that littered his face and body and just focused on her and her kind eyes. However, the concern that shone in her gaze was enough to bring him back to reality and remind him of his injuries from the bar fight with his father and uncle the night before. He knew he looked bad, but he didn’t want sympathy when he knew Randi got the worst of it.

The concern in her voice as she spoke his name once they were alone in the testing room broke his heart. When she took a step towards him, he politely stepped back, he didn’t want her to worry herself with his personal issues for fear that they would somehow end up affecting her in some way. She didn’t need to see the worst of him, not when he could give her a smile and leave her with something positive. That was all he ever wanted to do for Charlie as well as others. “I’m okay.” He told her gently. “It looks far worse than it really is.” He assured though he wasn’t actually certain if his words were the truth or not.

It seemed that the words were enough for Charlie and so Thorn gave her a small smile and moved towards the chair. Sitting down he gave her a thumbs up to show he was ready to start the test and then relaxed himself. Feeling a slight pinch, the young man let out a sigh as he was taken into the world of the simulation.

When his eyes opened again, he was standing in the kitchen of his parent's house. It seemed empty at first and just as tidy as always with his mother always stress cleaning for fear that any mess would upset his father. The memory pained him as he looked around at the spotless surfaces and wished his mother didn’t have to live in such fear every day.

Turning and walking further into the house Thorn was focused on trying to find his mother, trying to make sure she was alright. That tended to be the only reason he ever stopped by these days, to check on her and try to convince her to leave with him. He never understood why she stayed but knew that so long as he came back to check on her, she would be safe because his father would get his kicks out of beating him.

Rounding the corner of the hall that led to the living room resulted in Thorn running into a figure that was absolutely still and unseen up until that moment. Instantly Thorn’s heart began to race as he recognized his father who was now turning with a murderous snarl on his face. Run. Thorn thought but never had the chance as the large man rushed him and slammed him into the wall. Instantly an iron grasp closed around Thorn’s throat as his father began to strangle him. Gasping for air Thorn floundered about for a moment, scrambling against the wall as the grip grew tighter and tighter. The look of murder in his fathers’ eyes told him all he needed to know, he couldn’t look for mercy right now, he needed to save himself.

Throwing his arms upwards Thorn managed to shove his hands between his father’s lower arms and with what strength remained in his oxygen-starved body he began pushing them apart. It wasn’t much at first but each bit of pressure Thorn applied to his father meant less pressure on his throat which would result in more oxygen. As his breathing passage opened up again Thorn shoved his father’s arms completely away from his neck and held them in his strong grasp. The man snarled at Thorn, but Thorn only looked at him before shoving him towards the other wall, not violently but with enough force to make it clear this was not a fight his father wanted to continue.

A heartbeat later Thorn’s eyes flickered open in the testing room with the bright light temporarily blinding him. Slowly he sat up and for a moment he swore he felt different and believed it was due to the simulation. However, upon looking at his arm and the fresh bandage on it Thorn glanced over at Charlie with a look of shame. “I’m sorry you had to see that.” He apologized with the utmost sincerity. He hated that she had to not only see what had just happened in his simulation but also what had happened to him in the waking world as well. “You don’t deserve such troubles.”

Nerdy. Nerdy.

Charlotte "Charlie" Stark || 20 || Medic || Dauntlessborn

Charlie was horrified at the scene that played out in Thorn's simulation. But more than that Charlie's eyes seemed to cloud over and the images on the screen widened into reality. The sounds, images and atmosphere that came from Thorn's fears emanated through Charlie's body like an ice cold wave, she froze in place, eyes misty, body cold. The feeling of hands around her throat tightening each second made Charlie's head throb, and tears threatened to pour out of pain. She could see Jeremy towering over her, his gigantic hand squeezing her neck like a towel, her vision blurred and her heart skipped as it raced faster and faster. She didn't even realize that Thorn's fear simulation had stopped except that he walked over to her, speaking and apologizing that he wished she hadn't seen that. She stammered a reply that was barely intelligible and her body swayed as Jeremy disappeared from her vision and Thorn replaced it. She had gone pale, and a thin line of cold sweat had formed on her skin. Thorn stood before her but Charlie found his body to be swaying to and fro, only to realize that it was in fact her own body that was swaying. Thorn's eyes had narrowed in concern, only to widen as he rushed forward, as Charlie's body swayed a little too far and her body gave up on standing.

Thorn caught Charlie with ease, her body light and his own strong, he stabled her, gently helping her to sit in the chair as her vision finally cleared and her heart beat slowed down. Charlie put a hand to her head. Even though Jeremy hadn't touched her or even come near her in the last few weeks since Ghost had rescued her from him... She saw him in every corner, and the panic that came from seeing him was too much to handle. When she had seen Thorn's fear simulation, it had been an exact mirror of her own. She looked up as Thorn kneeled beside her, passing her a bottle of water. She gratefully took it, and began to sip at it as her head stopped throbbing so much. Thorn was still kneeling beside her when she finished the bottle of water, and she smiled at him, the color coming back to her skin and her body finally going back to normal. She hadn't had a panic attack like that in a while, but she was regretful that it was in the presence of an initiate. She just thanked her lucky stars that it was Thorn.

"I'm sorry. I had a wave of dizziness there." She said, not wanting to say the reason for it. She smiled at Thorn and took his hand as he helped her to her feet, his hand rushing out to stabilise her again as her body wobbled slightly. She giggled girlishly at this, and steadied herself. She breathed in deeply, then out, and turned to Thorn. "Thank you Thorn, I am grateful you were here while I was slightly incapacitated. I would ask that you not mention it to anyone though." She asked, watching as Thorn nodded in return. She turned to the computer and glimpsed at his fear sim time, nodding encouragingly. "Your time was amazing! Good job Thorn." She said with genuine joy as she smiled at the boy beside her. She and Thorn had always gotten along well, even with the age difference, it never bothered the two of them, and there had never been any awkwardness about it. Maybe it was the peculiar kinsmanship of knowing someone had or was going through the same pain as you. Although she would never wish that on anyone, knowing someone understood her pain would be something she would keep deep inside her heart.

Charlie knew she should tell Thorn that he could leave, she was sure he wanted to go find some way to relax after the simulation he'd gone through. But she didn't want him to leave. The idea of Thorn disappearing caused her heart to beat fast again, as she realized the panic it would bring for her to be here alone. Plus, Thorn was her last kid to take through the sims today, so she knew there wasn't anyone waiting for her. "Thorn.." She began to say his name, watching as he turned to look at her, eyes always ready to help. She blushed, feeling awkward at trying to get him to stay for a reason she couldn't really say. "Would you help me clean up the room? I find myself a bit lonely sometimes once all the initiates have finished, and I could use a hand as I'm still feeling a little dizzy. If you aren't busy..." She waited for his answer, hoping that he would accept and stay nearby.

Christian "Chris" Parks || 16 || Initiate || Dauntlessborn

Christian sighed but nodded as Blair asked that he be okay with her going to do whatever it was that she needed to do. He didn't like it, he wished she would just open up to him and let him go along. But he wouldn't interfere with it, as it would be rude and dishonest of him. He simply nodded, and kept his arm around her for as long as he could. He was glad she had at least accepted the offer to stay with him tonight, and he knew if she hadn't he would have struggled not to folow her home, and if he had he would have found it impossible not to attack Ajax on sight. The very thought of Ajax caused Chris's blood to boil and he knew that the moment he saw him he would find his fist flying into the Avalon boys face. However he had made a promise to Blair that he would try and avoid Ajax, and that he would do, but if it was unavoidable... Chris almost hoped that it would be... He would make Ajax regret ever laying a hand on Blair.

Christian found his mind wondering on these things, but was put back into reality as Blair led him back to Poppy, and he felt the warmth in his girlfriend seep through his own shirt to warm his side. He rubbed her shoulder gently, hoping not to aggravate any bruises or cuts she might have, and simply kept her close as the two girls caught up and Blair tried to soothe Poppy's concerns about where she had been the last wee while. Eventually however she turned around, and rising on tip toes to plant a sweet kiss on his lips, she bid him and Poppy goodbye, and made her way to do whatever it was that she had to do now.

Christian sighed openly, shoulders limp in defeat at seeing her leave. It always made him scared that she wouldn't return, or that she would return in worse shape. But he had to trust her. If he didn't, he would be giving her dishonour, as he had always trusted Indira to run her own life, and to not trust Blair would be rude. He loved Blair, he had never loved Indira. He turned to Poppy, "I wish she wouldn't do that." He said as they both watched Blair disappear behind the training room doors. "But if it helps her with all of this, then that's okay, I just miss her." Poppy nodded in agreement, and he knew that she must also have been thinking about others. "Have you heard from Randi at all? She wasn't at training today. Neither was Maverick... Do you think they got into trouble?" He asked although they both knew that it was a high possibility. Both Mav and Randi often got into trouble together. Christian stretched as he stood by Poppy, waiting for Fable to finish her simulation. He found in himself that it would be rude to leave before she came back, as the three of them had been talking before she went in. Chris watched as she finally exited her room, her hair covering her face, and therefore covering the mismatched eyes, and he wondered if she was okay. He motioned to Poppy that Fable had come out, and he began to walk over to her. "Fable?" He asked, his voice unusually gentle as he watched her turn her face to him. He scratched his head awkwardly as he was unsure of what to say next. "I was just waiting for you to come out, I thought that if you wanted we could all go and do something. But if you're busy or would prefer to be alone then I understand. We could go exploring sometime, show you around Dauntless." Christian watched and waited for Fable's answer, before he turned to Poppy and waved at her. "Are you free Poppy? We could go zip lining again if you want." He waited for their responses, and nodded at whatever they replied with, happily content with whether they did or didn't want to come. Either way he had nothing else to do and could use the exercise that it took to get to the building that had the zip line.

He began to make his way towards the exit of the Dauntless building, only taking a slight detour to grab a water bottle to quench his thirst. As he found himself walking outside of the training area however, he saw Leah making her way out as well, and he waved at her, taking her eye-contact as an invitation, he walked over. "Leah, I was wondering if you wanted to join, thought it could be fun to go to the zip line." He again waited to see what the response would be.

Maverick Maddox // Male// 18// Dauntless Born // Instructor
Interacting With: Randi Sanctuaryforall1 Sanctuaryforall1

Maverick turned to look down at Randi, whose head was currently resting on his muscular shoulder. His stomach nearly flipped in his own stomach, a feeling he was not quite used to. What was that? It was unlike the protective pang in his chest he got when Poppy was in danger, so different from the pity he had felt when looking at Bella. Randi didn’t need protecting, she was wild and curious, powerful and beautiful. He swallowed thickly. When had she become so grown up? He still remembered her as the rambunctious little girl that was constantly playing with fire, both literally and figuratively. But it was becoming abundantly apparent to Maverick that Randi was no longer the little girl he remembered. Maverick was so used to playing the hero, the rescuer, it was foreign to him to feel like the one that needed advice and yet here she was… all too ready to offer him the reassurance he so desperately needed.

Before he knew what he was doing he found his fingers reaching across his chest, slowly caressing Randi’s soft, blonde hair. It was almost absent minded but not quite. His touch was gentle, as if he were afraid he might get slapped for the gesture, but he remained steady. He found a certain comfort sitting here with Randi, a stability he hadn’t felt since he was a child. “I feel more like myself when I’m with you…” He said softly, his pale greenish grey eyes slowly falling on hers. “…less afraid.” He finished with a shrug, suddenly pedaling back. He hadn’t meant for the moment to become so intimate and personal; it wasn’t Randi’s job to comfort him. In fact, as an instructor he was supposed to be taking care of her, wasn’t he?

He suddenly cleared his throat as if they had crossed some intangible boundary. Slowly rising to his feet, he offered a hand down to Randi to help her up. Normally, he wouldn’t have handled her so delicately, but the blood on her shirt made him wary that the slightest bump might agitate her wound. “I should probably be getting you back. I’d prefer back to the hospital…” he smirked slightly as he headed back towards the bike, “But if I know you… and I do know you… I won’t get you back there without you kicking and screaming, and I don’t particularly fancy getting kicked by you tonight.” He chuckled softly. Maverick settled back onto the bike, turning at the waist to hand his passenger the helmet again. He may have been a generally reckless person, but he absolutely would not risk injuring Randi.

As Randi slowly laced her arms around Maverick’s waist, he again felt that fluttering feeling in his chest. His brows furrowed, and he didn’t try to hide it, knowing she couldn’t see the confusion in his face while he faced forward. Why did she make him feel like this? He hadn’t felt this way since he was a child, back when a younger version of himself used to watch Randi run around the neighborhood without a care in the world. He had been a boy in love… but that was so long ago. Surely he wasn’t still feeling the sting of a childhood crush…? The drive back to the dorms was unusually slow and cautious. He wasn’t trying to catch anyone’s attention, and he also didn’t want to risk an accident while the blonde was on the bike with him. When they finally arrived back at the dorms, Maverick walked with her slowly, his hands firmly tucked in his pockets. After his sudden caressing of her hair back at the remains of his old house, he wasn’t sure he trusted himself with the girl right now.

“Are you sure you’re gonna be okay?” He asked. Randi began to offer an excuse that she would be fine, but something about it didn’t sit right with him. “At least let me check you out in the med room.” It wasn’t so much a question as a firm suggestion, and when Randi reluctantly nodded he led the way to Charlie’s med room, which thankfully was empty at the time. Maverick paced in ahead of her and patted the table softly, instructing her to sit down so he could get a better look at her wound. He folded his arms as he looked at a seemingly mildly annoyed Randi. “Come on… show me. I assure you I’ve seen worse battle scars.” He grinned playfully.

Fable

Mood: Cautious

Location: Street Outside the Testing Center

Interactions: Mentions Blair, Ghost, and Dante

Her heart was still thumping in her chest as she exited the testing room with her hands balled into fists. She didn’t realize how tightly she had been balling her hands until she loosened her fist to push her hair out of her face and saw the blood in her palms. Looking down at her hands she could easily make out where her nails had dug clean into her palms, the thin lines beading with crimson that threatened to begin pooling together. God, I’m such an embarrassment. How could I think I could do this? She scolded herself internally. Sure, she had done well in the free for all but perhaps that had been a fluke. Reacting this badly to a fear simulation was not only embarrassing for herself but embarrassing for the Dauntless faction she was trying so hard to join. If any real members of Dauntless were to see her now she had no doubts they would think less of her but some primal part of her told her not to give a damn because the pain she had felt in there was so real that she could still feel the whispers of flames floating across her skin.

As she leaned against a pillar and wrapped her hands in fabric, she ripped from her shirt she prayed that Griffon and Cas had done better than her. It was hard enough knowing she had likely failed her fear simulation, she couldn’t bear the thought that either of them had as well. And then there was Dante, she couldn’t help but wonder how he had done. In just a few days they had gone from being each other’s world to barely talking at all and all because Fable had seen a side of him, she wasn’t sure she liked. As her thoughts lingered on the dark-haired boy a movement flashed in the corner of her eye, it was someone dressed all in black, and a few heartbeats after they passed the familiar form of Dante snuck by as well. “What are you up to?” She muttered to herself as she watched the young man she still cared deeply for sneak further down the block.

Sitting up from where she had been leaning and bandaging her hands Fable took a minute to consider if she would follow or not. Sighing softly, she began to move in the same direction the others had gone and made sure to keep her distance as she tailed Dante. Memories of the conversation they had overheard on the rooftop flooded her mind and began to fill her heart with dread. Please don’t let this be it. She begged anyone listening with all her heart. She hoped with every bit of her soul that the person Dante was following didn’t end up being Blair or Ghost but as she casually watched from behind a vandalized bus stop shelter, she felt her heart drop when a car pulled up to the side of the street a few blocks from the training center and the all too familiar face of Blair looked around before hopping inside.

“Dante, you fool.” She groaned as she instantly knew he was going to attempt something stupid. While they might not be talking, she still cared for him deeply and thus wanted to make sure he would be alright as he went on his mission. She also hoped that perhaps she could step in and stop him if she did anything too extreme. He’d listen to me…right? She asked herself as she looked around and spotted a motorbike in the ally beside her with a glittering keychain sticking out from the side bag. Cautiously stepping over to it she flipped the bag open and pulled the keys from inside with a sigh, “Alright Fable, hop to it.” She instructed herself as she straddled the bike, the feeling bringing back memories of her rebellious days in Abnegation.

Thorn

Mood: Regret

Location: Testing Center

Interactions: Charlie

As Thorn voiced his regrets about Charlie seeing such a horrible fear simulation, he managed to finally bring his gaze to her, and his heart lurched the moment he did. Something was clearly wrong with Charlie, she was pale, shaking, sweat was glistening on her skin, and in a heartbeat, she began to sway on her feet. Rushing forward Thorn caught her in his arms, her weight was nothing compared to the tools and metal he worked in his forge during his free time. Cradling her in his arms he managed to ensure that she was in fact still conscious as he moved her carefully over to a chair. With great care, he helped her to lower herself into the seat before he took a small step back to give her space, close enough to be there in an instant but far enough that she could breathe.

Looking around the room the young lad spotted a bottle of water with his good eye and raced over to grab it. A few heartbeats later he was back at Charlie’s side and was offering her the water with concern painted all over his face. “Please, drink.” He insisted with a soft tone of voice as he even made sure to crack the lid of the bottle for her so that she wouldn’t have to waste her strength doing so. It hurt his heart to think that his fear simulation had caused such a reaction in the young instructor. There was only one reason he could think that such a thing would affect her in this way and the reality that she must have faced something similar was enough to break his heart.

Charlie was so good, so genuinely kind, and warm, one of the most genuine people he had ever met. The idea of anyone hurting her or causing her to have this kind of fear made his blood boil. It enraged him enough that Thorn knew that if the person who did it was standing in front of him now he would likely break his own beliefs and beat the abuser senseless. The idea frightened him but he couldn’t focus on that right now, Charlie was the only being that needed his attention. He watched her in silence as she drank the water, clearly wanting to make sure she didn’t fall or get hurt.

Relief began to trickle into his soul as he saw the color return to her features as she finished the water. He couldn’t resist shaking his head when she began to apologize for what happened. He didn’t want her to feel sorry for having such a natural reaction to something like that. When she began to blame it on a dizzy spell, he couldn’t help but look her over once more. He knew good and well that it was more than just a dizzy spell, he had been in a very similar situation countless times growing up in the house he did. “No need to thank me, Charlie.” He assured her as he helped her to her feet. “Just don’t do anything too quickly, we need to make sure you are okay.” He reminded her as she wobbled a bit on her feet. When she asked him not to bring it up to anyone, he nodded his head reluctantly. He knew she had respected his privacy countless times and wanted to do the same for her but that didn’t mean he couldn’t monitor her himself. It seemed that was their role to play for one another, the silent friend who was always there to pick up the pieces after the damage was done. He hated that Charlie had to deal with any form of abuse, and he hated even more that he could do nothing to stop it much like she was powerless to stop his demons. As her praise hit his ears the young man gave her a small nod and looked away. “Thanks.” He replied softly, hating that he was being praised for the thing that had almost caused Charlie to hurt herself.

He knew he should likely exit and give her space but the idea of leaving Charlie after such an event didn’t sit right with him. She still looked like she could go down in the blink of an eye and the idea that she could hurt herself if he left was enough to keep him in his place without hesitation. When she called his name, he looked over at her with a gentle gaze, “Yeah?” He replied as he attempted to hide the relief of the words that followed. “Yeah! Of course! What needs to be done?” He asked as he walked over to help her in whatever way was necessary. “You can sit down and tell me what to do if that helps?” He offered. “And maybe I can grab you some food afterward?”

Randi

Mood: Conflicted

Location: Maddox Mansion / Initiate Dorms

Interactions: Mav

The soft feeling of fingers in her hair was one Randi had always loved, it was a gentle yet intimate feeling that was all too easy to melt into. She didn’t flinch or even glance sideways as she felt Mav’s fingers run through her hair, she welcomed it. Often times when she was touched it tended to be in more aggressive and passionate ways, not that she minded, but this…this was different and felt natural and right coming from Mav even if it was just a gentle and comforting gesture. A soft sigh fell from her lips as she closed her eyes and took a moment to relish the feeling and the person she was with. It wasn’t often that she was so slow and so still and while part of it could be blamed on blood loss, another part of it she felt had to do with just being with Mav.

It was odd to feel this way with someone. Randi usually walled herself off or ran away at the first signs of real feelings. With Jax she had to lay down the ground rules early, she only did casual things, nothing permanent. It had been different with Finn but that was because dating him was more like dating for comfort, both of them giving each other a try just because it seemed like a good idea at the time. It ended just as easily as it began and when it did end, she and Finn were still good friends. He had been the only real exception to her rule but now as she took in this moment with Mav several thoughts and feelings whispered within her. For now, she pushed them back, not wanting to deal with them and what they would mean. She knew Poppy had a thing for Mav and the last thing she would want to do is hurt Poppy, especially when she wasn’t even sure if Mav saw her that way.

When his words fell on her ears and their eyes met Randi found herself for once in her life rather speechless. His words were so genuine, so personal, they made her heart skip a beat. It was hard for her to believe that she could truly make someone feel like that but she could tell by the look in Mav’s eyes that he was speaking the truth. Randi gave him a small smile as she processed the words and the honesty that was found in them. Honesty was a huge thing for her, she was almost always honest to the point it got her in trouble, but she didn’t meet many people who shared that same level of honesty. Seeing it now in Mav, even if just for a moment, meant more than anything to the young blonde.

As the moment passed and Mav seemed to be regretting his words Randi sat up with a wince and hid a look of disappointment. She didn’t want Mav to regret talking to her, she didn’t want him to think she didn’t care or couldn’t handle it, she wanted him to know his words mattered to her. As she opened her mouth to try and express that point, she was cut off by his hand being held out and his comment about the hospital. Changing topics, got it. She thought to herself but mentally swore she would bookmark the subject and return to it at a later date. “Gold star for knowing me so well then.” She replied with a smirk pulling at her naturally pouty lips. “Getting kicked would be the least of your concerns.” She added with a teasing wink as he helped her up and over to the bike. “Really?” She asked with a chuckle as he passed her the helmet again, a genuine laugh followed by a flinch when she saw the look he gave her. “Okay, okay.” She sighed and plopped the large helmet on her head.

Wrapping her arms around him just tight enough not to fall off Randi once again leaned her head against his back. She did this partially out of exhaustion and partially out of some subconscious desire to be closer to him. Even with the wind rushing past them as Mav drove down the streets of the Dauntless Compound Randi could still smell the soft pine scent that always seemed to linger on the older male. She could still remember when they were small, and she would run around causing mischief and that whenever she was caught Mav somehow was always there to bail her out. It seemed that even as they grew some things never changed and Mav was still bailing her out of trouble like her knight in shining armor.

Sooner than Randi would have liked they were back at the initiate dorms, and she had to release Mav so he could dismount the bike. As he pulled away, she felt a stab of guilt when she noticed a red stain on the back of his shirt from where her own blood-stained shirt had been pressed onto him. Slowly the young blonde dismounted the bike and when she heard him ask if she would be okay, she gave a soft chuckle, “Yeah, this is nothing.” She attempted to assure him but the wince as she stood gave away that things were not all sunshine and rainbows for her at the moment. Shit. She groaned internally. She didn’t want Mav to have to worry about her but it seemed he wouldn’t let his worries go as he begged to let him check her out in the med room and she reluctantly agreed.

With his help, they reached Charlie’s med room a few moments later and she couldn’t help but roll her eyes and smirk when he patted the table for her to get up. “Yes, Doctor Maddox.” She replied jokingly as she used a small step stool to get up on the table, not quite trusting herself to successfully boost herself onto it. She didn’t like the fact that she was injured had become such a big deal, but she knew Mav was just trying to be a good instructor when he insisted on checking out her wound. With a slightly annoyed glance, she sighed and lifted her shirt so he could get a look at the blood-soaked bandages that were wrapped around her gut. “Is this your usual method to try and get a girl to lift her shirt?” She inquired jokingly. “Because if it is I would love to see your success/fail rate.” She added as she leaned back for him to get a better look at the injury on her stomach region, her shirt lifted just enough to expose the area for him to see.

Vex

Mood: Sadistic

Location: Vex's Studio

Interactions: Rivate; w/ Bella

TRIGGER WARNING!

Sneaking an unconscious form through the Dauntless Compound wasn’t nearly as difficult as one might believe. While the faction was the security force for the other factions it was severely lacking in real security features on its own turf such as surveillance cameras. The ones that did exist tended to be more focused on the heavier populated parts of the compound so Vex could get Bella’s unconscious form to a far more desirable location with very little issue. She was alert and cautious, making sure that after the incident with Ghost that no one saw her. She knew she would have to try and find out what Ghost remembered of the interaction later though by the way he had been acting she doubted it was much if anything at all.

With relative ease, Vex was able to secure Bella’s unconscious form to one of the hooks she had set up in her pop-up workshop of torture. It was in a building many often looked over, at the edge of the compound, close to factionless territory so those with a faction tended not to go there. The location had served her well in the torture of Ben and now it would do the same for Bella. With practically soundproof walls Vex knew she didn’t need to worry about being heard or found, besides no one had any reason to come looking.

A truly delighted smile painted itself upon Vex’s lips as she looked at her prey dangling in front of her. She wished she could have brought Caspian here and given him such treatment, such special attention as well but alas his death had been part of the job and not for fun. This? This was for entertainment because this little bird in front of her was suspected of being Divergent and that simply wouldn’t do. Vex wanted to please her masters and she knew that ridding the world of another filthy Divergent would do just that.

Reaching forward Vex gently stroked her hand along Bella’s bruised cheek before delivering a harsh slap that brought the young woman out of the realm of unconsciousness, she had been hiding in. “Hello, Little Bird.” Vex purred as she tilted her head, enjoying the fear and confusion in Bella’s eyes. “I do hope you are ready to sing me a little song.” She added with a devious glint in her eye as she strolled over to a table set up with brutal-looking instruments. Glancing back at Bella she casually drifted her hand across the array of tools as she slowly decided which one to use first. The look of fear on Bella’s face was intoxicating, it gave Vex a rush unlike any other that only grew when she saw the redhead attempt to struggle and put on a brave face only to crumple back into pathetic fear the moment she saw the tools.

At the first sound of Bella’s begging Vex laughed, genuinely she laughed and looked at the girl. “Oh, my sweet Little Bird,” She sighed through the giggles. “I’m not going to kill you…yet, not when we can still have so much fun.” She informed her prey with laughter still laced into her voice as she picked up a scalpel in her hand and walked towards the girl who was red-faced and crying snotty tears. “And to think you thought you would last here, or really anywhere at all.” Vex sighed as she pointed the blade at the girl and rolled her eyes. “I mean come on, the most basic animal instinct is to fight to survive, and you can’t even do that right. Divergent or not I am doing everyone a favor.” She informed her prisoner with a sigh before stepping closer and wiping one of Bella’s tears away. “Now my Little Bird…sing.” She instructed as she raised the blade to Bella’s soft skin.

Griffon Mordo || 17 16 || Initiate || Abnegation Transfer

Griffon had been with Cassidy while they waited for an instructor to become free for them to take their simulation today. Griffon had been finding the simulations scary as had most everyone else, but along with that fear he also felt an intense desire for them. Since he had lost most of his memory when he was 10, he could hardly recollect anything, in fact until he had seen Cassie at school he had only been able to remember his name. But when he had seen Cassidy (or rather Cassandra as he knew her), memories that had been dormant in his mind resurfaced and he remembered few but precious moments from their childhood. Slowly but surely over the last 5 years Cassidy had been trying to help him regain his memory, but it didn't seem to work very well. HE could remember random things, like the room they had stayed in as a child, and he could remember things to be true (such as the names of his parents). But he had no idea what they looked like, and memories flitted in his brain like butterflies, often escaping before he could grasp them. He had been grateful at that time to have both Fable and Cassidy to rely on, as he trusted them both dearly. Fable had already gone in for her testing before, but the two siblings sat side by side waiting for their turn.
The truth was, that Griffon almost enjoyed the fear simulations, because as he had learned from Cassie's intense researching, the mind never truly forgets things, but the ability to recollect them is broken or damaged. But they were still there, so when the simulations happened, it was altogether possible that through them Griffon could regain, strengthen or relive moments of his past that he had little to no memory of. This is what he enjoyed. Everything else about it he hated, the fear, the feeling of fighting for survival. Strangely enough he could also feel pain in the simulation, it was a strange sensation for him, one he had not felt very often in his life, and he sort of enjoyed the newness of everything in them. But while he was in the simulation? He wanted nothing more than for it to be over, even though his mind was not apt enough to know that it was a simulation.

Griffon's head turned as he heard his name being called by a cheerful feminine voice. He looked around the room until he saw the face that came with the voice, Bloom. Griffon rose up, and felt his sister squeeze his hand in encouragement. He heard her voice encouraging him to really try and remember the simulation afterwards, even if it was awful, as it might help. He nodded in response and started making his way over to Bloom. Cassidy wasn't stupid, and her theory of the simulations had already paid off, last time he had relived the car crash that had wounded and separated them, and after describing it to Cassidy, she noted that it was almost a perfect recollection of the actual crash that had happened. Griffon could now recall it, but it was more like remembering a scene from a movie than remembering a moment from ones life. He wondered what he would fear today? He nodded politely to Bloom, returning her smile with one just as bright, and made his way into the room, sitting on the chair and making himself comfortable. He suddenly had a small idea. "Bloom, do you record the fear simulations?" He asked, watching as she replied saying that they usually did. "Would it be possible for me to have copies of mine?" He asked, watching as she looked a little lost, not knowing the answer, then replied that she would have to ask someone else about it. Griffon nodded. "Thank you, I would be very interested to have them." He said, before leaning back in the chair as she administered the serum into his neck. He closed his eyes, Cassie's voice replaying in his head, telling him to remember... remember... remember.....

...

Griffon walked through a dark neighbourhood that he had grown up in, it was mostly broken down concrete buildings, ratty trees and bushes, scurrying creatures of somekind and skulking factionless. He recognised a few faces, friendly and not, but he continued to walk anyway. He carried with him a knife that was strapped to his belt, and an empty gun halster. He didn't like guns and didn't want to hold one or use one, the idea of it caused him to feel almost nauseous. He was in a hurry, as he remembered that his parents were waiting for him to come back with the medicine for Cassandra and Luke. He had that tucked into his halster, as it fit quite nicely. As he turned a corner, the neighbourhood went quite dark, and he felt his steps become as loud as gunshots in the night, his breathing heightened and his heart quickened as he felt his nerves erupt on fire with anxious intent. Would he get mugged? The idea occurred to him that maybe he should have brought a gun without any bullets, and then at least he could pretend to threaten someone but not hurt them at all. He grabbed his knife, wielding it in one hand as he walked slower and slower down this dark alleyway. It was as if the world had darkened unnaturally, but he continued on. Suddenly he heard a click clack of claws on a cobblestone floor, and his heart stopped, before racing like a train through his chest. His eyes widened as he heard the claws speed up, and he whisked around, only barely managing to duck as a massive black dog leapt out of the shadows and bared its teeth veraciously at him. Griffon yelped in fear, and as the dog missed him and landed awkwardly on the ground behind him, Griffon ran to a nearby fire escape laddeer in order to try and climb high enough to get away from the dog. However, poor 8 year old Griffon was not fast enough, as the dog caught up with him and with two massive paws he pushed him to the ground, his claws tearing at his chest and his teeth snapping at his face. Griffon screamed for help but nobody came, either because there was nobody around, or because the factionless didn't care about an 8 year old boy being mauled to death by a dog. Griffon pleaded and begged, his hands becoming bloody and pain erupting throughout his body as the dog tore at him. He didn't want to hurt the dog but he was terrified, and he knew that if he died here, nobody would look after Cassie, or Luke. He steeled his facial features and his heart and with the knife that he had dropped, but was near enough to pick up, he stabbed the black dog in the eye.
The dog, not being happy about this, leapt off of Griffon for just a moment, yelping in pain. "I'm Sorry.." Griffon exclaimed as he stumbled to the fireescape, finally getting up. However the dog was not finished and he leaped up, his jaw fully clamping around Griffons calf muscle. Griffon screamed in pain and felt the canine teeth sinking deep into his skin, muscle and tissue. Blood pouring down the ladder and consequently onto the dog, Griffon shook, his grip loosening, before finally making up his mind to try his best to get this dog to stop hurting him. With tears of pain and fear streaming down his face, Griffon screamed as he let go of the fireescape and plunged the knife into the dogs chest.

...

Griffon awoke with a startle, as he sat in the chair blinking at the bright lights that were in stark contrasts to the dark alleyway he had just been in. For a moment he just sat there confused, before remembering Cassie's words. "Remember." He took a deep breath and tried to remember. Factionless. Streets. Big dog. Medicine for Cassie and Luke. He nodded to himself as he logged that away in his mind. Bloom spoke to him, asking if he was okay, Griffon nodded. "yes, Thank you Bloom." He thanked the instructor, as he went to get off the chair. He pulled out a small notebook from his jacket's pocket, and began to scribble down the things he had encountered in the dream, already the memories becoming fuzzy. He noticed Bloom was watching him with interest. "It's a journal for me to jot down memories, I suffer from amnesia and I struggle to remember things." He said, finding there no reason to lie to Bloom about it, she may even be able to help him. "Actually, if you wouldn't mind could you look thruogh what I've written down and tell me whether they were accurate to the simulation or not?" He asked, passing her the notebook and letting her read over that page. Once she had finished, he jotted down anything he had forgotten and smiled. "Thank you." Before exiting the room and looking around for either Fable or Cassie. Seeing that currently neither of them were free, Griffon decided he would make his way back to the dorms. He flicked through his journal as he did so.

Due to his eyes being on his journal and not on the path in front of him, Griffon found himself NOT in the dorms at all, but remarkably outside. He placed his journal in his jacket pocket and looked around confused, trying to get his bearings. That's when he noted that there was someone sitting outside. Griffon felt a bit sheepish but he walked up to her, knowing that she was from the initiation but not remembering her name at all, another symptom of his amnesia. "Hi, I hope I'm not bothering you at all... I was just... well... Wondering if you knew the way back to the dorms? I was meaning to go there and I got a bit distracted, and well... lost." He said, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly and smiling at the girl. ""I'm also sorry, I don't recall your name... I'm Griffon." He said politely.

Bloom

Mood: Curious

Location: Testing Center

Interactions: Griffon

With Natalie’s departure, Bloom took a breath before looking down at the roster in front of her. She still had two names left that were vaguely familiar to her, likely from Charlie talking about them or perhaps seeing them at the bar. The corner of her lips pulled in a slight smile as she read the next name on her list, Griffon, it was a unique name much like her own which she was sure would make it stick out. The image of a young man with longish brown hair and a sweet smile accompanied the name and Bloom knew she had certainly met the boy before. As she looked at his name written in on the list before her she blinked a few times and silently prayed that his fear simulation wouldn’t be too harsh on him.

Turning towards the door the leggy brunette opened it soundlessly and stepped out into the hallway, her hair swaying as she walked and revealing the hidden layer of scarlet locks that lay beneath chocolate brown top layers. “Griffon.” She called out to the remaining initiates and smiled when she saw him sitting closely with one of the other girls, the two looking like dear friends. She gave him a nod of her head to follow her, the smile on her lips soft and welcoming as she led him back to the testing room. She noticed that the girl he was with whispered something to him before he departed and was curious if they were words of encouragement for what he was about to face.

When the dark-haired young man entered the room Bloom stood waiting beside her monitor, glancing up at him with a smile as he looked around. She waved her hand over towards the chair as she moved to the counter to prepare the serum she would soon be injecting him with. The smile he gave her was rather refreshing after the long night and morning she had already endured, a sweet cup of happiness that she didn’t realize she needed. Suddenly Griffon was inquiring about whether or not she could give him a copy of the simulation. Pausing for a moment Bloom considered the question and had to admit that she wasn’t sure. “I’m not certain about that.” She informed him as she walked over with the needle. “But I can certainly look into it for you.” She assured him and gave him a nod as she spoke. With his thanks being expressed Bloom gave him a small smile before pushing the serum into his veins and watching his eyes fall shut.

Taking a step back, Bloom took a seat on the rolling chair next to the monitor she had been typing info into a few moments earlier. Her mint green gaze was fixed on the screen as she watched what she presumed to be a younger version of Griffon braving the streets of what looked to be the factionless quarters alone. She wasn’t sure about all that was happening in the scenario, but her heart ached for the scared-looking little boy she saw. When the black dog appeared, she found it very interesting that his first instinct wasn’t to try and fight it but rather to defend himself. It truly seemed that Griffon did not desire to cause this violent dog any harm and the sight almost brought a tear to her eye as it reminded her of her beloved sister Scarlet who also could barely defend herself when a violent dog attacked her when they were younger. Blinking the tears away Bloom reminded herself to focus on the simulation in front of her and Griffon’s stats as he went through it. Bloom almost flinched when the simulation ended with young Griffon plunging the knife into the dog’s chest and she could tell that the action must have been a hard one for him. She couldn’t help but wonder what had drawn him to Dauntless when he did not portray the usual Dauntless qualities but rather the kind of qualities usually desired by those of Amity.

As Griffon’s eyes fluttered open Bloom stood from her seat and walked over to him to look him over. “Are you alright?” She inquired as he got up. She raised her hand to try and steady him is he needed it but was impressed when he instantly pulled out a journal and began writing down unknown words. She didn’t want to pry so she didn’t try to look over his shoulder, but her gaze did travel across the cover and the binding with great interest as he wrote quickly. Without her saying a word it seemed Griffon caught on to her curiosity because he began to explain his reason for writing to her and even asked her to check his work. Nodding her head, she took the journal when it was passed to her and looked it over carefully. It seemed that the young man had done a grand job remembering all that happened and had recorded it well. “That looks to just about cover it.” She informed him with a nod as she passed the journal back to him. “And don’t worry, I’ll look into a copy of your simulation for you.” She reminded him with a promising smile as he departed the room.

A moment after he left Bloom had the area cleaned up and ready for the next initiate. Checking Griffon’s name off her list she looked at the last name and knew it was the young woman Griffon had been speaking with. Stepping out the door of her testing room she called out, “Cassidy, you’re next.”

Blair Avalon // Female // Age 16 // Dauntless Born Initiate // Divergent
Interacting With: Ghost Aviator Aviator and Dante

The second Blair had entered the relatively beat up looking car she became the subject of an onslaught of insults and harsh comments. She tried not to let Ghost's venom like words get to her as she grit her teeth in the back seat. She could've snapped back at him, and there was no doubt that she wanted to, but Blair was no stranger to biting her tongue. Perhaps she had gotten herself in over her head... was Ghost really someone she wanted to align herself with? She had already taken such a huge risk in trusting him. Blair took a deep breath and reminded herself of her instructors words on the roof top the morning before. If Ghost had wanted her dead, she'd be dead. It was a hard pill to swallow, but swallow it she did. As if the universe were suddenly rewarding her for her attempt at being the bigger person, Ghost apologized, and Blair immediately cocked an eyebrow at that. More surprised than anything as her blue eyes locked with his in the rear view mirror.

Suddenly Ghost whirled around in the drivers seat, turning to face Blair. He looked like a child on Christmas morning as he uttered his inquiry. He wanted to know how she had convinced Obadiah to meet her. Blair didn't break eye contact as she spoke, her answer blunt and rather unforgiving. "I told him I figured out who gave Christian the drugs that put him in the hospital." there was a twinge of bitterness in her voice. She knew she couldn't realistically blame Ghost for Christian's fatal addiction but god did she want to. She wanted someone to blame besides Christian himself, and yet she wasn't particularly hostile with Ghost. She knew there was plenty of blame to go around, but blaming people wouldn't change the fact that her time with her boyfriend was becoming increasingly limited. Ghost seemed to mull over her words like they left a bad taste in his mouth. He was just about to open his mouth to say something before Blair cut him off. "Ghost!" She yelled, as she reached forward, her hand suddenly latching onto the steering wheel and jerking it to left as the car narrowly avoided crashing into whoever had just stepped into the road.

Ghost seemed to slam on the breaks during the chaos, evidently he hadn't seen what Blair had seen. The sudden stop had sent the blonde reeling forward, smashing uncomfortably into the back of the passenger seat as she let out an annoyed grumble. "Jesus Christ. Do you even know how to drive?" She rubbed the side of her head gently hoping that she hadn't just gained another bruise. Ghost was eerily quiet as he stared out the window and Blair slowly followed his gaze wondering what was wrong. She was sure they hadn't hit anybody... so what was the problem? Blair's eyes suddenly landed on a familiar face... Dante? What was he doing out here? Blair reached for the door and suddenly Ghost was warning her not to get out of the car. Blair simply rolled her eyes at this. "It's Dante... he might be hurt." She explained as she got out of the car and immediately made her way towards the taller male. "Hey, Dante what are you doing out here?"

Her fellow initiate did not respond, which caused Blair to slow her pace. Was her hurt? "Are you okay?" she edged closer towards him. That was when she heard an angry Ghost get out of the car behind her. She turned her attention back to her instructor, ready to deal with his scoldings for not listening to him, and that was when Dante spoke. "It's not fair, Blair." Blair's head whipped around to face the dark haired boy, a puzzled look on her face."What...? What's not fair....?" she paused as, for the first time, she really took a moment to observe Dante. He seemed disheveled, like he hadn't slept in days. His chest was heaving with shaky breaths... he was angry, and Blair couldn't piece together why. "Dante-" she was cut off as he continued speaking, he sounded almost apologetic, like he didn't want to do what he was about to do. "I know it's not your fault... but you don't belong in dauntless. I need to tell them what you are... and that Ghost has been helping you cheat."

Blair's heart dropped into her stomach. Her ears were ringing, everything was happening so slowly and yet all at once. She heard a muffled warning from Ghost, but couldn't for the life of her make out was he was saying. Her heart was racing. She was frozen... she never froze like this. How had Dante found out? "Dante... wait..." her voice shook, "You don't have to do this." Blair felt pathetic, pleading like this, and yet she couldn't bring herself to hurt Dante, even as she saw him reach into his jacket. Her mind instantly recognizing the cold and dark metal of a gun, not the ones that they used in training, but a lethal and blood chilling weapon. Ghost's voice rung out again, he was yelling some sort of instruction at Blair. Get back? Run? She needed to protect herself, but she didn't want to hurt Dante. Her brain and her heart battled with each other as she stood there motionless, until Dante was running towards her and all hell broke loose. Dante's solid body collided with Blair's in an instant, knocking the wind out of her as he struggled to restrain her, but Blair was not going to let herself be taken so easily. She slammed her knee up, hard, burying it in Dante's gut as he keeled over in pain.

She scrambled to break free of his grasp, a mess of long limbs and messy hair as she clawed angrily at Dante. By the time she got to her feet, Dante was one again on the attack. Surprisingly, it seemed like Dante was trying to restrain her more than anything. He was intentionally trying not to injure her as he wrapped his arms around her, attempting to lift her off the ground. Blair let out a grunt as she slammed her heel down into his shin, eliciting quite the growl of pain from Dante. She jerked her head back, slamming it into Dante's face. The sickening crunch she heard let her know that whatever her head had collided with had broken under the pressure, she assumed it had been his nose. Blair was about to push free from the male, to run back towards the car and regroup with Ghost, when Dante's voice cut through the chaos. "Enough!" Blair swallowed thickly as she felt the cold metal of Dante's gun pressed against her temple. "Don't make me do this Blair." There was blood running down his jaw as he threatened the blonde, his fingers sickly brushing through her hair as if she was a prize he had just won. But his attention didn't seem to be on Blair. He was staring straight at Ghost, daring the instructor to challenge him when he had Blair in such a vulnerable position. "I can still do this Ghosty." He spat his threat at the older boy. "I'm sure dauntless leadership would love to know about all the trouble you've been causing."

Perhaps Blair shouldn't felt more anger in that moment, but all she felt was guilt. Guilt that her divergency was now putting Ghost in danger, guilt that the simple fact that her existence didn't factor into this society had caused Dante to go to such lengths, guilt that she was probably never going to see Christian again. Her stormy eyes locked onto the dark brown of Ghost's as she shook her head gently. She wanted to scream at him to go, to get out of here while he still could, but the Holy Ghost had always been too stubborn for his own good as he stood there ready to face off with Dante. If these were in fact Blair's final moments, then she resolved then and there that she wouldn't be going down without a fight. Suddenly, she jerked to the side, slamming her elbow into Dante's chest, knocking the wind out of him just long enough for her to wriggle free of his grasp. She nearly tripped into Ghost as she stumbled forward, and then the sound of a gunshot pierced through the air and Blair's blood went cold.

Ghost // Male // Age 18 // Training Instructor // Erudite to Dauntless

Once Blair answered his question, Ghost almost wished she hadn’t. Her voice was as cold as a demon’s kiss, shattering against his ears like icicles and snuffing the tentative smile that had formed on his face. While she hadn’t mentioned him by name, the accusation was impossible to miss. A petulant part of him wanted to steadily raise his gaze to Blair’s in the rearview mirror and inquire as to the conclusion she had formed; he wanted her to call him out right then and there and have out with the impending argument that was brewing between them. But the logical side of Ghost knew that his relationship with Blair was on thin ice to begin with, and to instigate with her now would more likely than not result in her demanding that he pull over so she could exit the car. If he wanted to start and finish the job that they had set out to do today, he would have to keep the peace.
To spare himself from having to answer, Ghost turned the key in the ignition and put the car in gear, fumbling with the parking brake for only a split second. Despite his anger, he managed to keep a cool enough head to ease his foot onto the gas with an excess of caution, supremely aware of the possibility of ramming into the bumper of the car parked against the curb only a few yards ahead. For her own sake, Ghost hoped that Blair had the good sense to put her seatbelt on, because he was only mostly positive that they would make it to their destination in one piece.
The seconds marched interminably onward, and Ghost took a few too-sharp turns that sent both passenger and driver swaying in their seats. Finally, when he could take it no longer, Ghost started hesitantly, “I never meant for my arrangement with your boyfriend to become a long-term thing. I needed big money fast, and opportunity seemed to fall into my lap that one day when I recognized Christian was suffering from symptoms of withdrawal.” His knuckles whitened around the steering wheel, and a moment later a desperate sigh tore from him as he racked his brain for a way to make Blair understand, even though he was not sure he deserved her understanding. “I say these things not to excuse my actions—because they are unforgivable—but to give you some clarity as to why I did them, which you are dearly owed. For what it’s worth, I really am sorry—”
And suddenly Blair was shouting his name and Ghost was cringing away from the trumpet of sound and then it was pandemonium. She lunged forward, reaching between the seats to seize the wheel and jerk it sharply to the side. A horn was blaring, and Ghost was not sure whether it was his own or that of an outraged passerby. With a screech of tires, the white ZT Valor careened toward the sidewalk, where it miraculously avoided a collision with a streetlight by mere inches.
A wall of pressure built around Ghost’s ears, blocking the passage of any sounds. He swallowed thickly once and his ears popped and the wall toppled. Ghost was confronted with the deafening thundering of his own heartbeat, racing with equal parts paralyzing terror and mortification that he had very nearly gotten both Blair and himself killed from a poorly-timed lapse of attention. Ghost’s hands were shaking, and as he watched them, trying to steady himself, a garnet-red bead splattered against one of the joints. A moment passed before he regained the coordination to reach up and probe the line of blood that was cutting down the right side of his face from temple to jaw. A dull throb that Ghost suspected should have been a brighter, sharper pain radiated from beneath his hairline.
Blair’s voice rippled as if she were speaking from underwater, and yet Ghost understood her perfectly clearly for reasons he wasn’t sure why. A sloppy smile painted itself onto his face when he replied, with incongruent calm given the gravity of the situation, “I don’t mean to brag, but I’m something of a veteran at racing games. I’ll run laps around you in Mario Kart any day of the week, take your pick.” Unable to retain his composure beneath the heat of Blair’s glare, he dissolved into a series of incoherent giggles. Ghost decided that, in spite of himself, he rather liked Blair’s company, and particularly the way he felt when she was near.
Gradual awareness that Blair was no longer looking at him trickled into Ghost. He swiveled around in his seat to follow her gaze, ignoring a queasy twist of pain in his stomach. The figure of a tallish man was staring at them through the windshield, his dark gaze as persistent and lethal as a double-barreled shotgun. An icy finger of apprehension slid down Ghost’s spine, snapping him out of his giddy daze. This wasn’t just a random factionless man off the streets, he realized, but a Dauntless initiate. And the fact that he and Blair would run into Dante Aiken so far away from the compound had to have been more than just coincidence.
There was a rustle of movement beside him, and the car chimed merrily as Blair pushed open one of the backseat doors. Ghost reached an imperious hand back to prevent her exit, but she was already climbing from the car and his fist closed on empty air. “The hell do you think you’re doing?” he hissed, shooting her a remonstrative look. “He’s obviously unhurt, so we gotta haul ass out of here before the cops—”
The cops. Ghost didn’t get to finish his sentence before the door slammed shut behind Blair, leaving him alone in the Valor, but he wondered where the cops, should they appear on the scene, would begin with the numerous charges that he and Blair were guilty of. First there was the fact that they had stolen a vehicle, and then Ghost had driven said vehicle carelessly and very nearly caused an accident. Well, with the way he had been taking some of the corners, there had been several close calls, really. And then when the police questioned them on their plans with the stolen vehicle, there was the subject that he and Blair, a Divergent in the flesh, had been conspiring to commit treason by kidnapping the leader of Dauntless for a chat.
A frisson of anxiety pulsed through Ghost as he glanced at the digital clock on the dashboard—3:35. He had no idea when Blair had told Obadiah to meet them, but it was crucial that they arrive at Washington Park first to get into position. Yet as Blair trotted up to Dante and he shifted his feral gaze to her, Ghost suspected that being tardy would be the least of their problems. They had to survive the immediate threat before they worried about the possibility of later ones.
Blair’s back was to him, and the wind flung lemony strands of hair over her shoulder as she conversed with Dante. If not for the cords standing out in Dante’s neck like sharp, hot blades, the exchange would have appeared cordial enough, and Ghost’s chest lifted with hope that it would remain that way. Momentarily the instinct to get out of the car and back Blair up warred with a desire to stay put and trust in her ability to smooth things over, to tell a convincing lie of why she was riding in an out-of-control car with her instructor that had almost skidded into Dante, a pedestrian.
Suddenly a shout belted out. Ghost’s shoulders jumped up to his chin as his eyes locked onto the scene beyond the windshield with renewed horror. Dante’s arms were gripped around Blair’s waist in a deadly embrace as he lifted her off the ground, his face a menacing snarl. Ghost shoved the car door open just as Blair threw her head back and connected with the Erudite initiate’s nose, and Dante’s face erupted in a fountain of blood. His grip loosened enough for her to wriggle free, and Blair’s eyes were wild when they found Ghost’s, that agonizing second seemingly stretching out for eternity.
One of Ghost’s pearl-handled pistols leapt into his hand, but not fast enough.
Sunlight glinted malevolently off the barrel of Dante’s own handgun as he looped an arm around Blair’s throat and pulled her tight against his chest. Blood sluiced down his face and he wiped it with a lazy flick of the back of the hand that held the gun. “Well, well,” he taunted softly as his gaze darted between Blair and Ghost, who still brandished his Beretta. With his nose very likely broken, Dante’s words resonated with a sickening muffled quality, sounding more like web web. “I strongly recommend you set your weapon on the ground, Ghostly, if you want your accomplice to remain in one piece.”
“What is this about, Dante?” Ghost called over the wind in an attempt to get Dante talking, buy some time. If he could figure out Dante’s motive, then maybe he could be persuaded into letting Blair go without any further bloodshed. “What do you want?” How much do you know about us? Ghost thought. A nonviolent negotiation was probably just wishful thinking; Ghost didn’t believe in coincidences, so Dante must have had a reason for showing up at this time and place when he had. For him to have known exactly where to intercept them, he must have somehow eavesdropped on at least one of their prior conversations. And that wouldn’t have been the only thing he overheard. With that being the case, his knowledge was likely enough to sentence both Blair and Ghost to death.
Ghost reluctantly came to terms with the fact that not all three of them would leave this standoff alive. It was kill or be killed, and he would have to shoot Dante while staring him dead in the eye, a boy whose face he vaguely recognized from Christmas parties and football games. After all, they were both from Erudite and had temporarily attended the same academy for children of the faction’s most elite families.
“Yes, yes,” Dante chirped, sounding far too pleased with himself. His broken nose made his breathing labored, yet he appeared to be inhaling the air like it were made of honey and gold, like he had waited a long time for this moment to pass and was savoring it. “Scheme away, Ghostly. That look in your eyes says it all, and hey, that’s what you’re best at, right?” Suddenly Dante’s voice pitched into a growl, and the look in his eyes was savage, like a dog that had caught the scent of a rabbit. “This is your last warning, motherfucker, put your gun on the ground right now or else your lady is about to have an arm that ends in a stump. I don’t have to kill her immediately; I can toy with her for a little while.”
To demonstrate his point, Dante buried the barrel of his gun in the crook of Blair’s arm. Blair grit her teeth, and to her everlasting credit, did not beg or whimper as her captor cocked the gun with a sinister click. Alarm flared through Ghost, and he finally wavered, letting the Beretta clatter from his hand onto the asphalt. “Now kick it away. The other one on your belt, too,” Dante commanded, and Ghost complied, feeling his last sparks of hope burn out.
“You scum,” Ghost breathed, trying to regain some semblance of control over the frenzied hammering of his heart. “You’d drag a defenseless girl into this? Your fight is with me.” Come on, Blair, Ghost thought, but didn’t dare let his eyes flick toward her for fear that Dante would catch on to their silent communications. Do some telekinetic badassery during the time that I have him distracted.
“How admirable.” Dante’s voice was almost literally dripping with sarcasm; he turned his head and spat a mouthful of blood onto the pavement. “And here I thought you cared only about yourself. Your little Divergent pet must be really precious to you.” Blair stiffened perceptibly at the word Divergent, causing Dante’s mouth to slant into a smirk. “Ah, yes. I know all about your juicy little secret, Care Blair. To answer your swain’s question, I happen to be lagging behind in the initiation ranks at the moment, but all will be remedied when I turn over both a Divergent and a traitor to the leadership panel. I’ll be hailed a hero.” Dante’s voice was almost deliriously overjoyed as blood trickled from his left nostril.
Fury and defiance buzzed through Ghost like brandy. “Oh, well, in that case, why not just shoot us both now?” He raised one shoulder in a careless shrug. “I mean, you might as well, because if you turn us over, we’ll meet the same fate. The gun will just be in the hands of someone who has the balls to use it.” Blair’s eyes rapidly ballooned and then narrowed at Ghost. She shook her head in disapproval at his attempts to provoke Dante as much as the gun pressed to her temple would allow, but he was on a roll. “When you look at it like that, Aiken, your threat to shoot my accomplice suddenly loses a lot of its leverage.” Ghost raised a meaningful eyebrow at his discarded pistols, as if debating whether he could reach one of them in the time it would take Dante to shoot Blair and then re-aim his gun.
“A smart-ass to the bitter end,” Dante seethed, his mouth forming a flat, unimpressed line. “But bravado won’t save you now. You’ll have plenty of time to argue with God when you’re standing at the gates of hell, Ghostly.” Dante spat the name, as if it reeked of phoniness.
“Is it really arguing when I’m just pointing out your logical fallacies? Evidently your parents were pissing away their money when they sent you to fancy-ass prep school.” Despite his barbed words, Ghost’s palms were slick with sweat. Dammit, Blair. Do something with your inexplicable but highly convenient superpowers. Toss my gun back to me. Or drop something on this jackass. A rock. A nest of angry hornets. A bloody piano. Anything.
The only advantage Ghost held was the fact that Dante too was starting to look nervous. His tongue darted out to moisten his lips in a reptilian motion, and it occurred to Ghost that maybe Dante didn’t have any set plan, as he seemed to want Ghost and Blair to believe. Perhaps he too was just improvising his whole way through this potentially lethal encounter, because unlike Ghost, it was improbable that Dante had ever been in genuine fear for his life before. Dante Aiken with his posh upbringing of crystal chandeliers and top-shelf wines and designer clothes. If Ghost was chain links, then Dante was a white picket fence.
“If we’re on the topic of pointing out things,” Dante said in an obvious and desperate play for time, “then does Care Blair know what kind of person she’s partnered with? It only seems fair, considering you know her secret identity, Ghostly. A secret for a secret.” Ghost’s heart stopped beating, and he realized that it had been a grave mistake to bring up his and Dante’s shared prep school. “That’s right. Who ever would have thought that a Divergent would team up with the infamous Lost Heir, of all people?”
One newspaper had bestowed that title upon Ghost when reporting his father’s felonious business practices, right after he and Tabitha had been murdered and the company ledgers had fallen into government hands. Ghost had stood to inherit sums of money that most twelve-year-olds did not even have a number for—until his parents had been outed as swindlers in the aftermath of their deaths and Erudite had commandeered their illegally earned fortune. Averill had not come from wealth; he’d been a self-made man, and yet his legacy would not prevail among younger generations, because his son had been stripped of every last dime. Lost Heir, indeed.
Ghost swallowed past the blockage forming in his throat. He blinked several times, and the world slowed in its spinning. “Say that name again, Dante, and I swear I’ll—”
“And you’ll what, Mister Jacobi? You seem to forget that you’re at a loss of bargaining power here. How does it feel, huh, to be powerless? To no longer have the ability to pick and choose which initiates pass and which are thrown into the sea of factionless, to play God, essentially? I would say that I’m sorry for putting you and Care Blair in a bind, but really, I’d be lying. I like seeing you squirm, you overprivileged son of a—”
Just then Blair emitted a wrathful cry that sounded as if it’d come from some avenging spirit in a cautionary tale. With a burst of strength, she tore free of Dante and jabbed an elbow into his ribs. His arms flailed as he scrambled for purchase on the bloodstained asphalt. Blair charged blindly forward and collided with Ghost, sending the two of them sprawling in a tangle of pale limbs and mussed hair as a gunshot split the air.

Charlotte "Charlie" Stark || 20 || Medic || Dauntlessborn

Charlie breathed a notable and yet quiet sigh of relief when Thorn consented to staying with her, and even more than that, the young Dauntless initiate proved to be as caring as she always knew him to be when he encouraged her to sit down and take a break while he tidied up. Charlie let her body relax as she sat in the chair, every now and then nearly wincing as her body had a natural fear response from the panic attack, causing different muscles to cramp up, or tighten, and sending nervous signals to her brain. But she knew she was safe, Jeremy hadn't shown appearance and it seemed he may even have been avoiding Charlie, ever since Ghost's little escapade to Jeremy's house to privately tell him to leave her and Sasha alone. It had been weeks of freedom that Charlie had not felt in years, and she had felt almost as safe as she had before she'd known of Jeremy's existence. But this didn't stop her from experiencing panic, and she knew that it was PTSD. She had never been diagnosed from a doctor but she knew that's what it was, and she dreaded the day it might do more than just cause her to have a fainting spell. Charlie blinked as Thorn reiterated his sentence, asking her if she would like anything done. She nodded, a bright smile lighting on her face as she went to stand up, only for her body to sit her back down again. She nibbled on her bottom lip as she gazed around the room, it wasn't all too messy, so she knew it wouldn't take either of them long to tidy up. "If you pass me my first aid bag I will finish sorting it, and if you wouldn't mind, I would be very grateful if you could pack the unused serums away in that box, and throw any rubbish or used needles into the trash. Thank you Thorn." Charlie said, taking her bag from Thorn she focused on making sure it was all in there, knowing that she had used much of it on Thorn's injuries. She felt a pain in her chest as she looked at him tidying for her, had those injuries happened from his family? Charlie wished she could do something, but she knew that deep down in matters like this she was near to useless. Merely something to get in the way, a pretty face.

Thorn finished the room quickly and Charlie zipped up her medical bag, looping it over her shoulder and slowly rising. Without warning, almost scaring her, Thorn was by her side and steadied her with a gentle hand to her back. The touch sent electric fire up her spine, but Charlie found that the trust and love she held for her dear friend caused it to dissipate quickly. Charlie wasn't a touchy person, or so she had come to the conclusion, and many touches often caused her to feel fear and panic. Even now she felt Thorn's touch like a fire in her lower back, but as she thought it through, remembering who Thorn was and how he cared for her, the fire seemed to calm and simply remained a small warm section on her back. "Thank you." She said softly, dark brown eyes meeting Thorn's own, she watched as he asked if she would come with him and eat something. She wondered if she was pale, and if she was still swaying on the spot, it was true she hadn't eaten, or if she had it had been the smallest amount of food, so she knew that Thorn's request was a smart idea. Something inside of her yearned to rebel from food, and she had to stand there silently fighting her instincts to answer. "I would love to get some food with you Thorn." Charlie smiled, and blushed as Thorn offered his arm, on the side of his good eye, to her, wanting to help steady her while they walked. She hesitated again, not in anyway because of Thorn, but eventually she mentally reminded herself that Thorn had never in any way harmed her or touched her inappropriately, so there was nothing to fear from his touch. She slowly let her arm loop into his and they exited the simulation room, Charlie locking it behind her and then following Thorn as he led them out of the training area, which was very quiet and empty, and towards a food area of Dauntless. She felt her stomach rumble loudly and hoped Thorn hadn't noticed, as the smell of warm baked goods reached her nose and she breathed in a long amount of the deliciously savory and sweet scent. Thorn seemed to notice her reaction to the smell from a nearby cafe and he turned so that they were walking towards it.

Charlie offered to pay, as she knew that initiates got nearly nothing in terms of money, and she knew that Thorn often spent much on his mother - Charlie did exactly the same - and the two got some baked goods and sat down, waiting for their drinks. Charlie took a bite of the buttery croissant that she had chosen and relished as it melted on her tongue, the bread soft and oh so tasty. She laughed softly as she looked up at Thorn, "This was a good idea, I'm glad you convinced me of it." She said and watched as he nodded in return, eating his own food. The two quickly received their drinks, Charlie having ordered a delightful Chai Latte, and she held the cup in both hands, relishing the warmth that the cup provided to her. Thorn and Charlie talked as good friends do, with no particular intention or reason, but with love and care. They smiled, and Charlie found herself laughing much more than she had in a long while. However, good things don't always last, and unfortunately Charlie's time with Thorn was cut short by the unfortunate arrival of Felicia and Terra Parks.

Charlie looked up as Felicia and Terra closed in on the table that she and Thorn sat at, and Charlie smiled, before noting the distressed looks on their faces. "Terra? Felicia? What's wrong.." She asked, a sinking feeling beginning to develop in her chest as a number of possibilities began to make themselves apparent in her brain. Had something happened to Christian? Aubrey? Phillip? Asher... Charlie didn't have to wait long as Terra began to speak, but Felicia quickly interrupted her. "What's wrong? Don't play coy with us Charlotte Stark, tell me this isn't yours." Charlie looked as Felicia slammed a medical instrument, a long needled syringe that had gone missing from the infirmary. "No this is mine, where did you find it?" Charlie asked, confused as to why such a fuss had been made over a lost medical instrument that she must have misplaced. Felicia's face went red as her fist slammed on the table. "Then, Charlotte, you are under arrest for the MURDER of Caspian Maddox." Charlie felt as if time stopped. Her eyes glazed over as the words sunk into her ears and mind. "Caspian's dead? No... I saw him last night! Please tell me you're playing a prank, please... no.." Charlie's hands shook and the chai latte she had been holding fell to the table, bouncing and spilling the hot liquid all over her dress. Charlie didn't even notice as Terra grabbed Felicia and drew her aside, firmly talking to her and then telling her to wait outside. Terra came back to the table, Charlie had not moved, the latte still dripping off of the table into her lap. "I'm sorry Charlie, but you do need to come in for questioning, if nothing else we can hopefully get some information on to what happened. I know how much Caspian meant to you. Felicia's emotions are tied in a little more directly than mine, she and Caspian were seeing each other. I don't want to have to take you in by force, please come with us. Thorn, you should probably leave." Terra addressed Charlie and Thorn politely, and Charlie nodded, too shocked even to cry. She stood up, muttering a barely audible goodbye to Thorn as she followed Terra outside and left with the two Parks girls.

The interrogation was like a dream, Charlie hardly able to grasp the reality that Caspian was dead. Felicia yelled, whereas Terra questioned calmly, but she held no hatred nor annoyance towards either girl, her heart simply breaking in two as she kept thinking about how she had left Caspian at the bar by himself. If she had just stayed with him this would never have happened. She blinked as words formed from Terra's lips. "You are our top suspect, the instrument was yours, and Caspian's will entitled you and your family the majority of his money and belongings, not to mention his life insurance." Terra stated, causing Charlie to gasp, she had had no idea that Caspian had done that.
Charlie was there for a few hours as they asked her many questions, but eventually the reality set in and Charlie began to softly weep. Terra finally sent Felicia out, and gently told the medic that she was free to go, but that they would likely have to bring her back for more questioning later. Charlie nodded, and left hurriedly. She barely managed to get anywhere as she found a seat outside of their office somwhere by itself and sat down, her body convulsing with gentle yet traumatic sobs of pain and sorrow. Caspian was dead.

Aubrey Amber Stark || 16 || Initiate || Dauntlessborn

Aubrey watched as Finn refused her invitation and instead told her he had family business to attend to with Harper. She stood stunned as he said goodbye and left without a hug or even a fist bump. He heart squeezes as she watched him go and she flushed at the fact that it was probably her fault. She had turned him down. And it was probably a good thing since it hurt enough to see him walk away now, how much more if they had decided to date? No, this was for the better, she had more important things to worry about. Such as her rank in. Initiation. And also her sisters well-being. So once Finn had left her field of vision, the tall blonde female bent down to tie her shoelaces, then tighten her pony tail, before jogging to the nearest exit and running as soon as she left the compound.

The run was refreshing and cleared Aubrey's mind like it always did. She knew that it would be this way, and because of the escape from her emotions she ran around the block once, and then twice, and then almost another time before stopping when her mother exited the house to call her in. She waved happily and came over, grasping her mum in a happy hug before entering the house for a cool drink of water. Her eyes however noted the tidiness of the dining room, the extra chairs at the table and the tablecloth spread across. "Hey mum, why is there a tablecloth and extra chairs? Are you having a party without me?" Aubrey joked, kicking at the red tablecloth that lay across the wooden table. Sasha laughed and whipped at Aubrey with a matching tablecloth, causing her daughter to squeal with laughter and pain. "No, well maybe. Charlie is bringing her boyfriend around for dinner tomorrow."

Aubrey froze. Charlie's boyfriend? Her eyes widened as Sasha continued on but her ears had stopped with those last words. This wasn't a dream or a fear sim as it? Charlie really did have a boyfriend just like Jeremy had said, and now Aubrey would meet him! "Can Finn and I come?" Aubrey 8nterrupted her mother, immediately apologising as Sasha shot her an annoyed look. Before saying that they could obviously not come as they were both family. Aubrey silently cheered and hugged her mom as if in excitement, before saying she wanted to go to her room.

Inside her room she barely closed the door before calling Finn. Excitement and adrenaline racing through her veins. But she was met with a cheerful voicemail and she remembered he'd said he was busy. She left him a message telling him to call back, and chucked her phone on the bed. It wasn't a second later though when it called again, and she picked it up, answering and bringing it to her ear. "Finn? You won't believe..."
But it wasn't Finn. But Charlie.
"Aubrey? I'm... I am so sorry. But Caspian... Caspian is dead."
Aubrey froze, shocked and confused at the words. Caspian? Dead? Impossible. Caspian was invincible. Unstoppable. Perfect. She silently listened as Charlie told her that the funeral would be tonight, and she wanted to go with Aubrey. Aubrey never answered, but hung up. Curling up on the bed and screaming into her pillow. Caspian couldn't die! He was her role model, her mentor! Her... Her saviour and she had always thought he would marry Charlie and they would have mini Charlie and Caspians. But no more.

Aubrey didn't notice when Charlie came home, not when she and Sasha came in to comfort her. The only thing she heard was that she needed to get dressed. Aubreybjust mutely nodded. But didn't move.

Christian "Chris" Parks || 16 || Initiate || Dauntlessborn

Christian was sad when Fable left, and Poppy politely refused the offer to zip line, so he walked alone a bit muted and dull, wishing that Blair, or at least someone, was there with him. Even when he saw Leah she was going to do something else and didn't feel like zip-lining. Honestly Christian had about decided to not do the zip-lining and instead go home, but he was stopped by a slender tanned female with dark hair, Cassidy. She seemed very interested in the idea and Chris eagerly began the trip to the zip-lining area. Along the way he noticed someone whom he wasn't very familiar with, and as they passed by Cassidy spoke to him. However Chris was taken by surprise when Cassidy signed all the words she said, and he took a double glance, coming to the conclusion that this boy AZ must be deaf, or hard of hearing. He waved and said a small hello, still unsure if he could hear at all. Cassidy interpreted the answer being that he wanted to wait for his sister.

When the sister came out, Chris was glad to hear that the two were interested in coming along. He had no idea whom any of these people were as he hadn't interacted with them besides a few fights, so as they walked he threw out a simple yet intriguing question to them. "What faction were you guys from?" He asked, out of genuine curiosity. He knew that often people were shy about mentioning it as "Faction is stronger than blood" but Chris was more interested in just knowing. He held no hard feelings towards any faction and found them all interesting. He was not a Dauntless by heart but by breed, and had stayed because of that. Otherwise if he was to follow his aptitude he would have gone to Candor.

Cassidy spoke first, as Des translated the question into sign for AZ. Cassidy said she was from Erudite, whereas the twins, as he noted they were, we're from Abnegation. Although there weren't usually many Abnegation or "Stiffs" in dauntless initiation, there were a fair few this time. Chris only knew Fable, and barely knew her brother Griffon. He nodded, and when asked his previous faction he pointed at the compound around them. "I grew up here, my dad is one of the leaders." He noted, not to show off but simply as a way to let them know. "The zip line is quite the run and climb away, so if you're not up to that today I would suggest heading back now. But it will be worth it." he watched everyone consider it, then smiled when they showed interest in continuing.

Christian broke into an easy jog, mostly to gauge how fit and energetic everyone was today. He felt physically good, other than the constant itch and scratch in his throat since the incident. He ran smoothly with his long legs and muscular figure. He made a decision to use the road rather than the train, ammeaning they had to run further but it was safer and easier to track. They ran for a while, the sun beating down and sweat dripping from Christians brow. Finally they reached the building and Christian noted the doors were locked again. "Don't worry, they're always locked... Just follow me..." He went around the back, and nimbly - which was interesting for a man of his size - managed to jump to the second story window ledge, and pulled himself into the broken window. He leaned out to see if anyone needed a hand, and barely missed getting smacked by Cassidy as she sprung up like a rabbit. He offered his help to Des and AZ, and then they started up the stairs.

Finally, after too many flights of stairs, the zip-line stood in front of them, connected through many wires and interesting combinations of metal, to the roof of the building. Harnessed sat in a neatly packed away box and everything seemed perfect. Chris breathed in the city air and took a good look around, guiltily wondering if he could see Blair and if she would be out here. However he didn't see her, and instead her motioned to the Contraption. "This is the zip line, you strap into a harness and hold right here, don't burn your hands by holding the actual line. Then you may have to avoid certain branches and buildings but it is all part of the ride. I'll go last to make sure everything is okay, who wants to go first?

Cassidy "Cassie" Wickham || 16 || Initiate || Erudite Transfer

Cassidy had spent most of her time at Dauntless just soaking in the fact that her brother was back where he belonged, right next to her. She had fought to make sure they shared a bunk bed, she had always tried to go everywhere with him, spar with him and train with him when possible. Of course she was more than happy to do so with Fable, who was as close to her as Griffon seemed to be, given his amnesia, but she would never be able to have the connection she had with anybody but her brother. Some people teased, not knowing they were siblings, as the secret they held between them stayed within the tight 3 persons of her, Griffon and Fable. But she didn't care about what people said, words were simply a tool for people to use but in the end they had no power unless you gave them power, at least that was how Cas had decided to look at it. So as she sat with Griffon waiting for their tests, she relished in the silence that they held, no need for useless and meaningless words. When they did speak, it was about the simulation coming up. "Try to remember the simulation really well, your last one was a nearly perfect memory of the car crash. You could remember some important things." She spoke to Griffon with encouragement and passion, desperately wishing her brother would remember more than the tiny portion he did. It had been an interesting experiment to go through the fear simulations, Cassie had figured out that she was Divergent when she researched about it in Erudite, having a keen aptitude for psychological and biological studies. When her aptitude test happened she tried very hard to make it seem like she was Dauntless, but to her surprise she had been outwitted by the serum and it had called out her Divergency, though it allowed her to hear the three that she had been - Dauntless, Erudite, Candor. Thankfully the person who had tested her had helped her out, and that record was nowhere to be seen, her own voice stating herself to be Dauntless, and there she went too.

Dauntless. Not Cassie's first choice, and if she had gone to Erudite - which was her first choice - she would have claimed Erudite as her first choice. But alas, Griffon's amnesia had caused that to be a bad idea, as he would never have completed Erudite initiation, whereas Cas was almost positive that she would have aced it. But her brother was more important to her than her faction of choice, so that had left only Dauntless, as Cas refused to live in Abnegation, Amity or Candor. PLus she knew that she and Griffon had what it took to get through initiation, both having been trained to be soldiers for their parents, even if Griffon didn't remember. When Fable had shown interest in Dauntless, it had only solidified the fact, and the three had gone. The training? Easy - Cas had found herself actually pulling her punches and pretending to be worse than she was so that she wasn't standing out. Of course, she took enough beatings as anyone else, and it hurt. Cas felt every cut and bruise much longer than the average person, and her body ached like a broken bone after every fight, thus she was grateful for Griffon, he helped massage her torn body, helped to ease her pain with medicinal herbs, and looked after her during her migraines. She helped him with his memory, and tended to the wounds he couldn't feel. That's why they made such good sparring partners, he would barely touch her and she would cover him in bruises, he couldn't feel them anyway. Cas hated it, but it was better than being bruised herself. She was grateful when she found out about the fear simulations, something she had been unsure of whether it was true when she was joining Dauntless. But it was true, and she had been surprised at the simulations realities. They were very accurate to fears, and seemed as real to the eye as anything else. To her mind though? Cas entered into the simulation clearly, and therefore she had to train her mind to think like a Dauntless, rather than a Divergent. So far, she had managed to stay clear of being caught out, but it was harder than she had ever imagined, she almost wished she could have the fear simulation the way everyone else did.

Cas looked up as Griffon's name was called by Bloom, and she squeezed his hand. "Good luck, don't forget to remember." She said, and felt the squeeze back from him as he nodded and wondered over to Bloom. Cas simply sat in anticipation, and awaited her own call. To her surprise it was the same instructor who called her name, and Cas rose up, barely getting a chance to smile at Griffon before she had to go into the room with Bloom. Cas didn't know Bloom, she had only just arrived as a trainer, same as Maverick, and Cas found this unsettling. Not because she disliked either, but because she had this urge to know who people were and how to act around them. But when people kept joining this training she had to keep adapting and morphing to whatever suited the environment, and that could be exhausting. However from the small amount of Bloom she had seen, she had noted that she seemed very loving and kind, and always wore a genuine smile. Ghost was cynical, thought himself funny, and self-proclaimed intimidating. Charlie was a pushover, gentle, genuinely kind and observant. Harper was stern, actually intimidating, but oddly not assertive. Maverick was a lot harder to figure out, as he had come and disappeared as quickly, but from what she could tell he was similar to Caspian. Seemed to have a good heart and a good head on his shoulders, but maybe a bit flighty and easily drawn after other things. So out of all of these, Bloom was a good one to get. Cas could imagine that if Bloom figured out her Divergency, that she wouldn't tattle. But Cas wouldn't take that option of her own accord, she would try and act as Dauntless as possible in the simulation.
Cas jumped up on the chair and smiled brightly at Bloom as the instructor asked her if she was ready. She nodded her head happily and leaned back so she was comfortable, wincing visibly and almost slapping the needle away, she gripped the arm of the chair as it went in, clenching her jaw, and shivered as it came out. Soon enough though her eyes rolled back and her body fell limp.

----

Cas blinked as the rain fell on the asphalt in front of her. She was leaning over taking in giant gulps of air, and her body was soaked from the rain. It was dark, so nighttime, and she was freezing cold, tired and in pain. She heaved in breaths and finally felt herself ready to continue running, for that was why she was so tired, and she looked over her shoulder. No... not this night. Cas groaned as she saw Griffon beside her, also tired, and he grabbed her hand. "We have to keep going Cas." She bit her lip, but if we do, we will be separated. "Of course, I know, let's go." Cas said those words, mimicking what she had said as that 9 year old child. She tightened her grip in Griffon's and they ran, bare feet slapping on the asphalt, and her foot roaring with fiery pain, Cas began to feel her heart rate soar. This fear, she knew what it was, and she knew how much she feared it. As they neared the dreaded bridge, where the night that had caused her life to become a uniquely different life started, she began to slow her feet, but Griffon wouldn't stop. She tried to yell at him that she was tired, that she wanted to take a break, that maybe they should just go home, but she bit her tongue, a painful experience, and just continued running. She had to face this fear like a Dauntless. But she didn't want to. She wanted to face it like an Erudite, like Candor, like Dauntless, like all 3. She wanted to get out of it, to just wake up. At these thoughts, it was almost as if some things began to disappear from her view, the rain just disappearing immediately. Cas knew this was her fault and she didn't say a word, and thanked her lucky stars that that was all that happened. As they finally began to run across the bridge she let out a groan as her keen ears heard the noise of a far away car, but she knew it wasn't far.

"Come on Cas! We need to run!" Griffon kept saying this, and Cas just kept her mouth shut, not trusting herself to answer him back sensibly. Finally the sound of the motor in her ears was too much, and she ripped her hand out of Griffon's. "No! I.... We... Let's just go back... Please... I'm scared." She whimpered as she began to back away to the beginning of the bridge. Griffon looked confused and began to walk towards her to bring her back with him. Cas heard the car roaring louder and she began to breathe faster and faster, her heart racing. Not this night. No... That's when the headlights hit the bridge, and Cas knew she had to do something. Griffon began to turn to look at the car, and she knew that when he turned around her would push her off the bridge, but she couldn't live that reality again. She ran forward as fast as she could, and as Griffon was just screaming her name and turning around, she used all of her might to leap into him, shoving him and herself down and off of the bridge. The world seemed to go in slow motion as she screamed in fear. The sound of their bodies breaking and hitting the ground was the last thing she heard as her body jolted from the impact and her eyes blinked at the plain walls of the simulation room. She immediately leaned forward, cradling her head. The world spun a little as her eyes adjusted, and her head thumped a bit from the experience. She knew she would likely have a migraine later, as there had been enough symptoms alluding to this.

Bloom walked over, asking if she was okay. Cas nodded. "I'm sorry, that was... terrifying." Cas said, though she knew that what had been terrifying more than anything else was having to let that simulation even go in the first place. Having to remember that moment. She knew she shouldn't have chosen some of the choices, but sometimes it felt like she had no choice, even when she could tell it was just a simulation. She hopped off of the chair and flashed a small smile at Bloom. "Thank you." She said as she walked to the door and let herself out. She didn't really want to know how she did, or hear anything from Bloom, as nice as she supposed the things would be. Cas didn't know if people knowing she and Griffon were siblings was smart or not, and she couldn't trust herself to not tell the truth. Although she was an adept liar, it was not in her nature to do so, she much preferred honestly and straight-forwardness, she was simply brought up to be completely different.

Exiting the room, Cas noticed that Griffon had already disappeared. She sighed, having wanted to stick around with him after the simulations, but she wasn't surprised. Griffon tended to forget things like that, and simply wondered off many times. It was never a selfish thing, Griffon was the epitome of Abnegation and would never do something selfishly, but he was forgetful. Cas looked around for Fable, but the bright haired Abnegation girl was also gone. She sighed, sucking her bottom lip gently and suddenly overhearing Christian Parks saying that he would be going to do some fun activity. Cas's ears pricked at this notion, and she jogged over to him, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
"Christian! You're going zip-lining? I'd love to come with, if that's okay." She said, and watched as Christian shrugged and nodded, showing that he did not mind who came. Cas smiled, and walked happily with him. As they passed by some others she noticed a familiar face. "Az?" She said, slowing down and watching as Christian did also. 'We are going zip-lining, you're welcome to join us, as is Des if she's around, I've heard the zip-line is fantastic." Cas said, signing the words as she said them, having learned sign language as soon as she'd known of Griffon's hearing problem. Although she had not grown up with Des or Azazel, she had grown to know them a little because of Griffon. They weren't friends or good acquaintances but Cas liked them well enough and it was nice to have some faces that she recognized.

This is fucking awesome. Sure, they have to face their fears but Dauntless is just as adrenaline based as he always dreamed. Azrael can't help but look around in wonder at absolutely everything here. Everyone is wearing tight clothes! And he can see himself in a mirror! Somewhere in the back of his mind something is telling him that he's being selfish. His sister didn't want this. Should he want this? Taking a deep breath he forces those feelings down, taking a few moments to people watch.

He's always been interested in tattoos. The idea of another way of showing a story, something even he can understand. It's fascinating. He'd like to get one, one day. He's not sure what he would get. But, he knows he'd like to tell a story. Maybe even his story. Or even, he could get a tattoo for his sister! He can't help but grow excited as he finds her in the crowd, his hands moving faster and his face flushing crimson.

"What's got you all riled up?"
Desdemona signs, making sure to reach across and bump her brother's shoulder.
"Just everything. Don't you love it here?"
He questions her, who simply smiles and shakes her head. Though, Azrael, in his excitement, doesn't seem to take this to heart.

His sister begins walking away, signing bathroom as she goes. Back to people watching he goes!

A few minutes later, Az feels someone approaching him and quickly turns around, expecting it to be his sister. His smile brightens quickly as he recognizes Cassie and Christian.
"We are going ziplining, you're welcome to join us, as is Des if she's around"
    FUCKING AWESOME!

"Des is in the bathroom. Could you two wait a minute so we can go too?"
He signs to them, just as Desdemona approaches the group.

Griffon Nerdy. Nerdy.
Almost as soon as Natalie swung the door open and stepped outside, the heat became too much for her hoodie. She was typically used to spending these summers out in the heat— seventy, eighty, sometimes ninety degree heat— even in long sleeves. Her farm work back in Amity typically required long work outdoors, regardless of the time of year, and depending on what she was working on, she'd need to wear long sleeves. However, the long sleeves were never ever the color of heat-trapping black. Between the temperature outside and the hot flashes that came with the embarrassment of her fear simulation, she was quick to shed that layer and tied it around her waist.

She quickly found the very bench she had been thinking of when she decided to exit the building and plopped herself down with a heavy sigh. She needed a minute to find her mind before she took off on a walk to gather her thoughts. There was just a lot to process. She knew, on some level, that it was just a matter of when she might see Sam in her fear simulation. Her fiancée had been the source of many sleepless nights. Or. Ex-fiancée. The night Sam disappeared, something in Natalie's heart felt wrong. Why would she abandon her like that? Sam loved her. There was no way she'd leave on her own volition. Or so the she had thought. The fear sim was just another reminder that she had no idea where Samantha was.

The initiate looked down at her right hand, where she was still wearing the engagement ring Sam had given her. Maybe the reason she was struggling so much was because of the guilt she felt. Like she was betraying Sam. The ring on her right hand meant she considered herself as having lost Sam. Probably permanently. It was a decision she made a few days after Sam disappeared and hadn't returned. But maybe it was too quick of a decision. What if Sam was out there? Waiting for her to come looking for her? Save her? But she left. She ran away to Dauntless, where she'd probably never find Sam, who she'd already written off as dead. And now Natalie was here, finding new girls pretty. Like Bloom. She was betraying Sam. Cheating. Giving up on her. But what if... What if Sam was really gone? What if she was really dead?

She leaned forwards, resting her elbows on her knees and pressing her face into her hands. She bit her lip hard to try and prevent tears from welling up in her eyes. And, knowing no one was there, she let out a frustrated groan. This world was cruel and unfair.

Hearing the door swing open, she quickly moved her hands to make it look as though she had just been rubbing her eyes. In her attempt to make her seem more put together, she smoothed down the flyaways that were beginning to curl with the July humidity, and leaned down to pretend to be adjusting her shoelaces for her walk. She was expecting whoever it was to take their leave and walk passed her, just as she was planning to, so she didn't bother to look up. But whoever it was stopped short. They were approaching her.

Natalie quickly turned her cobalt eyes upon the boy. She wasn't typically approached by people, putting her in an odd situation where she had no real idea as to how to act. It'd be different if they were at training so that they could talk about what they were working on. Or if they were back at the farm and he needed help, she could help him if they were and even talk him through whatever he needed. But he was choosing to talk via their own discretion. Something she was never good at. She stared blankly at her fellow initiate as he asked for the help he needed and introduced himself. Griffon. She knew who Griffon was. She'd observed him during their training, as every now and then he'd done something that intrigued her.

Realizing it was her turn to talk, she found herself stuck as she was fighting for just enough words to form a fully coherent sentence. At some point, she had sat up straight, and looked painfully stiff at this point. Did she introduce herself and wave him off? She wanted to be alone to gather her thoughts. But, did she really want to be alone with her thoughts? She rose to her feet and gave Griffon a small nod. "Scotty." She introduced herself, deciding one word would be a good enough sentence. Scotty had been Sam's nickname for her. It was the only name she wanted to go by anymore. Natalie had always joked that Sam wouldn't be able to call her that anymore when they got married. They'd both be Hayes-es. Now, she'd probably always be Scotty.

She wordlessly lead him back to the door they had both previously exited, stopping to hold it open for him. Griffon thanked her, both for the door and for helping him out, and once again her response was nothing but a silent nod. She honestly would have been glad to walk the whole way in silence, but a part of her felt obligated to let him know verbally how to get back to their sleeping quarters, so maybe he wouldn't be so lost the next time around. She awkwardly fiddled with her ring, trying to find what exactly to say next. She wanted a little bit more than just telling him how to get back. But she didn't know what to say. The duo approached the stairway and she paused for a moment to speak. "The dormitory is just one floor below the training room and the simulation room." She began the climb, trusting that her tagalong would follow.

She felt bad for not having much else to say. She did want to ask him about his journal. She journaled too, and so far didn't see that anyone else had. It was the only common ground she could currently think of. Minus the fear sims, which, quite frankly, she did not feel like speaking to anyone about. Ever. She slowed her pace so that she was still in front of Griffon, but not so much that she was difficult to keep up with. She was going to try her hand at conversation and wanted to be close enough that they could hear each other, especially since Scotty's back was too him. "What's the journal for?" She asked, trying to project her voice. It came out a lot louder than she wanted it to, but Mother had always criticized her for mumbling and never speaking up enough. She supposed she overcompensated, and quickly quieted down. She became sheepish as she quietly added, "Sorry, that was loud."

Fable

Mood: ...

Location: Street of Dauntless Compound

Interactions: Mentions Blair, Ghost, and Dante

Damn. Despite her best efforts, she had somehow missed a turn Dante had taken and was now cautiously listening to the world around her. She knew there was no way that he had noticed her, and she only lost his trail because a couple of preteens came racing out into the street in front of her and she had to swerve to avoid hitting them. By the time she picked up her bike, which was now pretty messed up from crashing into a brick sidewall, and looked back to make sure the kids were okay Dante and the duo he had been tailing were gone and now she was trying to play catch up.

The front tire on the bike was done for which meant she was on foot from this point forward. The young redhead knew she wouldn’t have the luxury of being able to check multiple directions so she would need to pick her route carefully. Pausing as she stood beside her stolen bike Fable narrowed her eyes and listened well for anything that would signal the direction they had gone. There wasn’t much uncommon noise in this part of the complex and she could hear the kids who almost got flattened earlier playing far away now. “Come on!” She growled as she looked around, keeping herself alert and trying to figure out which road they would have taken.

Suddenly the sound of a car slamming on its breaks, rubber dragging against asphalt, tore through the air from what must have been a street or two over from where she was now. “Got ya!” Fable muttered to herself before she took off running down an alley towards where the sound had originated from. It took her several minutes to jump a few fences and pinpoint the exact location of the action but from the sound of it things had taken a turn from the worse and Fable’s heart was heavy with worry. She could hear screaming and fighting as the voices of Dante, Blair, and Ghost carried into the alley Fable was now racing through. Dammit Dante, what have you done? She mentally screamed at the young man who she had been closer to than any other initiate, not including Griffon.

Her heart stopped when she slowed and peered around the corner to find Dante holding a pistol to Blair’s head and Ghost stood several feet away with no window to escape. Fable was truly shocked to see the situation before her, she knew Dante was desperate to make it into Dauntless, they all were, but this was not the way. He was spitting venomous words at Ghost as he dug the gun into poor Blair’s skin as though to emphasize his point. While Fable didn’t catch every word spoken, she knew Dante was serious with his threat and that he would kill them both if he thought it meant guaranteeing himself a spot in the faction. This gun-wielding psycho standing in the road was so far from the young man Fable had awoken on the roof with just the other morning. The sweet and silly Dante she had come to care about had vanished and a cold shadow of him now stood in his place.

Silently Fable crept closer, her eyes scanning the area around her for something, anything, she could use to stop her friend from going through with his plot. Unfortunately, it seemed that makeshift weapons weren’t on the menu at this point because the alley seemed cleared out of pipes and wood planks. As she snuck behind a pallet just outside the alleyway a glint of light caught the corner of her eye and she glanced over to spot what looked to be the remains of a broken glass bottle. There didn’t seem to be any good angle to pick the glass up and so carefully and with as little sound as possible Fable tore her shirt and wrapped the fabric around her hand before picking up the large shard of glass.

As she worked her way closer the conversation became easier to understand as Dante verbally jabbed at Ghost with venom in his words. Fable hadn’t noticed the two knew each other so well and was surprised that Dante seemed to take such pleasure in verbally abusing the instructor. Fable was about to make her move when the name Jacobi entered the air and she froze. She had only heard that name a few times before and none of them had been pleasant experiences. For an instant, she felt her back sting as she remembered her father beating her when she asked him about that name and now it was one that Dante spoke of in reference to Ghost. G-Ghost is a Jacobi? She internally stuttered as she attempted to process the information but had a great deal of trouble doing so as her hand began to shake slightly. Not possible. It can’t be! Because that would mean…The thought was never finished because it seemed that at that moment Blair had grown tired of being a victim and decided to fight back even with the gun pressed against her.

Fable watched as Blair wrenched herself free of Dante and threw her elbow back into the young man’s ribs. While Dante went down for a second, he was quick to get to his feet and raised his gun to line up a shot on both Blair and Ghost. In an instant Fable was dashing forward from her hiding spot and slammed herself into Dante, bringing the shard of glass down on the hand holding the gun. The glass ripped through his skin as he pulled the trigger but due to Fable’s body-slamming him sideways the barrel of the gun had been pointing towards the ground and it was there that the bullet became buried.

Without wasting any more time Fable began to wrestle with Dante for the gun. The two rolled across the ground as Fable shoved the shard of glass deeper into his hand, blood gushing out and onto the pavement. Her hand was stinging with hot pain as well, the glass biting through her cloth-wrapped hand and into her palm and fingers causing crimson to steadily drip and splatter across the road as the two fought. Dante looked genuinely surprised the moment he realized it was she who was attacking him now. The surprise was quickly replaced by a look of betrayal and fury as he laid a solid punch into her side and tried to toss her off of him. Fable, however, refused to let go as she locked her legs around Dante and dug her fingers and nails into his collarbone in an attempt to keep him on the ground until she could get the gun. She was gasping for air as he landed another punch to her ribs and in return, she quickly buried the glass shard into his arm before headbutting him so that his skull knocked against the pavement.

Dante groaned in pain but still seemed to have fight in him as he struggled to keep his grip on the gun that Fable now managed to have her bloody hand wrapped around. It seemed that despite the injury to his hand he had no intentions of letting go of his weapon. Suddenly Dante’s other hand was wrapped around Fable’s throat and the redhead’s eyes went wide as he forced them over so he now topped her and could hold her against the cement as he crushed her throat with his hand. As soon as they were flipped Fable, despite struggling for air, managed to raise her knee square between Dante’s legs which finally caused his grip on her throat and the gun to loosen. He delivered her a harsh slap to the face as he recoiled from her but couldn’t manage to stand.

Quickly Fable scrambled across the ground, getting to her feet as she swiped the gun up from the side of the road. She knew that Ghost and Blair were still there but right now she couldn’t pay them any attention as she turned the weapon on Dante. “I told you this wasn’t the way!” As she spoke her voice was filled with emotion that made it clear that this was the last position she wanted to be in. She took no joy in fighting Dante, in them hurting each other, in her now holding a gun on him. “Why couldn’t you just listen to me?” She gasped.

When Dante looked up at her her eyes began to water at the sight of him. He was giving her that look, the look he gave her when he was assuring her that everything would be alright, and she just needed to trust him. For weeks now she had taken such great comfort in that look and the boy behind it. Dante had been her anchor when things went wrong and when she doubted herself, they had been each other’s port in the storm. “What they are doing isn’t fair Fable.” He told her in that voice of understanding her used so well. “It is wrong, you know it is.” He added as he attempted to stand as she held the gun a bit higher and steadier.

“Stay down.” Fable told him, her voice firm but also thick with emotion. “Please Dante, stay down.”

Looking up at her the young boy shook his head ever so slightly and gave her a smile. “I can’t.” He told her simply. “We can turn them in together like we planned.” He added as he once again attempted to stand, holding out his hand for her to help him up. “Then we are sure to get in together.

His words sounded so soft, so sweet, so genuine, and in that moment, Fable knew he would never stop. Dante knew too much about Ghost and Blair now, they both did, but Dante wanted to use that information to hurt others and that was something she could not allow. Fable looked at him with teary eyes and shook her head. “That was never my plan, and I am so sorry that you felt it needed to be yours.”

The finality of those words seemed to be clear to the young man kneeling before her. His eyes narrowed and as he attempted to surprise her by rushing towards her the bang of the gun filled the air. Dante’s body slumped to the ground as a pool of blood began to blossom around his head. It took Fable a moment to fully realize what she had done and honestly it took all she had not to fall to the ground. A tear rolled down her cheek as she looked down at the body of her best friend, the gun still in her outstretched arm as though she was frozen in time.

Thorn

Mood: Concerned

Location: Testing Center and Bakery

Interactions: Charlie

He was glad she took him up on his offer to help, truly he was because it meant he could stick around and keep an eye on Charlie. Thorn knew that panic attacks could have some nasty aftereffects and there was no way that he would ever feel right about leaving the kind medic all on her own after experiencing something so torturous. He gave her a nod as he worked to clean the space she had been using in the room. When the brunette asked for her medical pack Thorn gathered in carefully in his arms and placed it in front of her, his freckled face painted with a smile as he did so. “Any time Charlie.” He replied with a warmth to his tone. “I’m always happy to help, even if I might not know what all of this does.” He reminded her with a light jab at himself in the process. He wanted to make her smile and help her move away from whatever she had just been through as quickly as he could so that she would hopefully be able to focus on more positive things.

Several minutes later the work was done, and it was time for the two of them to head out. Thorn, being worried for Charlie’s balance, attempted to stable her as she stood. For an instant, he saw her body language change, his good eye-catching what looked like a flash of panic at the touch. Thorn removed his hands from her, holding them close in case she fell but not directly against her. It crushed his heart and soul that someone or something had hurt the genuinely sweet medic to such a point, but he also understood. He might not be as touch-triggered as Charlie was but certain sounds, certain scents, those could certainly set him off and put him in a terrible state of mind.

His mind was pulled from the harsh memories by Charlie’s soft voice as she agreed to grab food with him. He was relieved that she had said yes because it meant he could make sure she got a good meal that would hopefully help with her current situation. As they departed Thorn offered her his arm, not to pressure her, allowing her to make contact only if she wished. He wanted to make sure she stayed steady but wasn’t going the press the matter if she denied his offer to loop arms. To his relief she allowed the contact to take place and the two departed the testing room with Charlie locking the door behind them.

While Thorn might be blind in one eye his other senses were still in tip-top shape and so as they walked, he couldn’t help but hear the rumble of Charlie’s stomach. He noticed her attention being drawn towards a pleasant scent coming from a nearby bakery and smiled softly as he directed their path there. The young man had every intention of paying for their food, but it seemed Charlie was a bit quicker to get the money out as she had already paid before he had his wallet out of his pocket. “Thank you.” He whispered to her, not ashamed that she felt the need to pay for him but rather to make sure she knew the gratitude was sincere. Once they had their food and sat down Thorn watched to make sure Charlie actually ate and smiled at the look on her face the moment she bit into the croissant. It was clear that the beautiful medic enjoyed the taste of her treat and upon seeing she was eating Thorn took a bite of his own cherry tart. “I’m just glad that you agreed.” He admitted as he lifted his cup to her in cheers. “Though, if you hadn’t, I would have just ordered you a pizza.” He added semi-jokingly, a cheeky smirk pulling at his lips.

The sweet moment between the two ended abruptly when Terra and Felicia Parks approached the table. The interaction that followed was shocking, to say the least. There was no way Thorn believed that Charlie was a murderer, no matter what Felicia declared. He was glad when Terra approached the situation a bit more calmly though it was still a grim situation to deal with. Caspian was dead, murdered. Instantly Thorn thought of Mav, and he felt his heart break for the young man who had lost his older brother so suddenly. Mav however would have to wait because Charlie was in trouble now. Thorn had no idea how anyone could ever believe Charlie was capable of doing such a thing. When her drink spilled across the table the young man sprang into action to try and contain the mess, his body on autopilot as his mind tried to think of some way to help Charlie out of this. When he was told to leave Thorn stayed put for a moment longer, looking over at Charlie, not willing to leave if she didn’t want him to. When she looked at him and nodded the young man waited a moment longer before reluctantly getting to his feet and looking over the trio. “Whatever happened to Caspian…Charlie had nothing to do with it.” He stated firmly before giving Charlie one last look asking if he should stay without using his words. The look the brunette gave him told him all he needed and though it was the hardest thing in the world Thorn departed the scene so as not to get Charlie in further trouble.

Ghost // Male // Age 18 // Training Instructor // Erudite to Dauntless

In his peripheral vision, Ghost saw the telltale shimmer of gunmetal in sunlight just as Blair staggered up to him, and fear drilled into his bones. Her flailing hands found purchase against his shoulders, and Ghost was unsure whether her intent was to steady herself or knock him to the ground while behind her, Dante sighted and cocked back the hammer. Whichever Blair’s intention, Ghost crushed her to his chest and twisted in midair as the asphalt rushed up toward them, so that he was on top when they hit the ground. His back itched in a million different places as he presented Dante with an unprotected target and Ghost clenched his eyes shut, hoping only that the bullets’ momentum would stop when they lodged in his body and not pass through and penetrate Blair anyway.
But only one gunshot peeled off. For an irrational moment, Ghost wondered whether there had been more, but that first bullet had taken him through the skull and killed him instantly, rendering the subsequent gunshots imperceptible to him. Then, belatedly, came the sensation that his arm was prickling where it was trapped between Blair’s supine form and the ground, and he could hear the sounds of a scuffle from behind. Relief melted blissfully through Ghost when he realized that the gods and their cruel sense of humor had spared him—for now. His muscles went limp with it, his face burying itself in the juncture between Blair’s neck and shoulder, and Ghost was too giddy with the mere fact that he was still alive to care much about the way that Blair’s chest was pressed up against his own. She smelled simultaneously smoky yet sweet, like freshly made popcorn drowned in warm golden butter, and one of her exhalations stirred the hair beside his ear.
As the adrenaline fled his body, Ghost didn’t realize until that moment how exhausted he was, and he might have taken a short nap atop Blair if not for two things: her persistent squirming against him and hissing at him to get up, along with the presence of a second female voice, this one more distant. Curiosity pumped through Ghost as he deduced that this newcomer must have been their savior, else why would Dante have stopped firing after only one shot? With a trembling effort, the muscles in his biceps and shoulders worked as he pushed himself up off the pavement and into a sitting position beside Blair.
Across the vacant lot, another of the girls from initiation—Fable—was grappling with Dante Aiken, trying to wrest the loaded gun from his grip. Ghost turned to Blair with a dumbfounded expression. “For Christ’s sake, Blair, did you leave a trail of breadcrumbs behind you? Just how many initiates saw you leave the compound? Is the fucking national guard going to turn up next?” Blair opened her mouth to deliver a hot reply, but just then a short shriek cut through the air as Dante threw Fable to the ground, pinning her throat with his hand. But Ghost and Blair didn’t need Fable to win her fight in order to be saved. They merely needed Dante distracted long enough for Ghost to retrieve his fallen pistols.
Moving low and fast, he skimmed along the asphalt in a half crouch, wanting to draw neither Dante nor Fable’s attention. Fable might have saved Ghost and Blair for now, yes, but he wasn’t about to call her an ally until he knew her motive for being here. Perhaps she had opposed Dante just so that she could get the glory of handing over Blair and Ghost to Dauntless leadership herself. With that possibility on the table, Ghost wasn’t sure what he would do if Dante managed to secure the gun from Fable and hold her hostage as he had Blair. She was a stranger, and maybe a hostile one, but they owed her their lives regardless.
With sweat-dampened palms, Ghost scooped up both of the pistols he’d been forced to kick away, but holstered neither of them. When they were in such close proximity to each other, he couldn’t shoot Dante without fear of hitting Fable, because if Dante moved at the last second Ghost risked killing his and Blair’s rescuer. But his worries were for naught, because just then Fable landed a knee to Dante’s groin and snatched the gun with a decisive motion as her adversary writhed on the ground.
There was a soft crunch of gravel behind Ghost and to his right, and he turned as Blair scampered up beside him. Her hair was a mess of butterscotch snarls and her all-black ensemble torn in some places. The light followed her when she moved, reflecting like embers off her tan skin, and a low warmth at her nearness moved through Ghost. Hoping to learn some of Fable’s reasons for intervening, he directed his attention to her exchange with Dante. Her face was flushed as she admonished Dante for not listening to her, and yet she stared at him as if he were where her world started and ended. Ghost suddenly felt as though he were intruding on an intimate moment, which only fueled his fondness for eavesdropping. “Ah, a tale as old as time,” he said in a low aside to Blair as they watched. “The man discarding the woman’s advice because he thinks he knows better than her.” Blair leveled a vaguely accusatory look at Ghost, as if to suggest that such a comment made him a hypocrite. “Oh no, between the two of us I know I know better. There’s a difference,” he said with an infuriating wink.
Dante knelt in a heap of failure at Fable’s feet, his voice taking on a note of entreaty as she continued to brandish her weapon. Ghost’s lip curled with disgust and resentment. There was something greasy about Dante, a gleam like oil between his fingers, a cunning slickness to his expression even as he paled. Had either Ghost or Blair begged Dante to spare them, he wouldn’t have hesitated to shoot them in the head and collect the bounty he was due. And the little shitbird had the audacity to try to claim the moral high ground, informing Fable how very vile Blair and Ghost’s methods were. “Yes, because the man who threatened to toy with an unarmed girl before killing her is the leading authority on right and wrong.” This time Ghost’s voice was loud enough to carry to the two transfer initiates. Blair gripped his shoulder from behind and snapped at him to shut up. “What?” he asked innocently, pressing a hand to his chest in mock offense. “If there’s a chance that Fable decides to blow us away, I want my last words to be memorable ones.”
Perhaps they would have argued further, but at that moment there was an explosion of sound. Ghost jumped a foot in the air and whirled around to find Dante sprawled on his back in the middle of the parking lot, a neat black hole having appeared between his eyes. The tip of Fable’s pistol smoked menacingly, and a kernel of respect for her formed inside of Ghost. Nonetheless, he discreetly thumbed the safety off one of his own pistols in anticipation of what might come next. Two minutes ago he and Blair had been Dante Aiken’s prisoners; they were not about to go back into the power of someone else who intended to use them as bargaining chips. Ghost would die on his feet with a gun in his hand before he was dressed in chains for a morning execution. Seeing no reason to be coy with Fable, he called over the echoes of the gunshot, “Now what, Miss Morvo? Are you going to let Blair and me retreat peaceably, or are we about to have ourselves a shootout?” Ghost spoke with perfect calm, unworried about his chances in a gunfight against a girl who, as of three weeks ago, had been wearing Abnegation gray and looking at her shoes when she walked.
He didn’t say as much, but there was no way that Blair and he would be going anywhere while Fable was still a conscious witness. Otherwise she would just follow them again or tell the authorities the direction they were headed. Still, they would have to be on their way quickly, because even though they were just inside of Baneberry, which had been practically forsaken by law enforcement, it was the no-man’s-land between a cluster of rival gangs, and Fable had just shot a man dead with no silencer. Someone was bound to come for them sooner or later.
All the warmth in Fable’s fair skin had seeped out like a wilted flower. A single tear track gleamed on one cheek, and a beat passed as she composed herself. She answered that she just wanted to talk, and Ghost noted how she shoved the gun she’d taken from Dante into the waistband of her pants rather than throw it away. “Let’s talk fast, then, because the police or worse will be on their way soon.” Following Fable’s example, he flipped the safety back on his Beretta and started in the Abnegation girl’s direction. Gravel shifted behind him and Ghost spun around, gripping Blair’s shoulders and stopping her in her tracks. “Stay here, please.” She started to argue that she was capable of defending herself, and Ghost countered, “I know that, but should I not walk away feeling whole and righteous, I’ll need someone to avenge me. Please stay?” His words were light and joking, and he forced his lips into a wide smile to match them. Blair finally relented, and Ghost swaggered across the parking lot alone, the wind pushing his long coat out behind him in a way that made him feel dashing.
“Thank you for saving our asses,” Ghost said good-naturedly when he was within comfortable speaking distance of Fable. “If ever you find yourself in a tight spot and need a favor, you know who to call.” Ghost extended one hand as he approached for a shake, or if Fable was cool enough, for a dap. She watched him warily, as if he were a shark circling a submarine, and Ghost knew that she was reconciling herself to the thought that one of her instructors was a faction traitor. He had no idea how long Fable had been watching his confrontation with Dante from afar, so best to assume that she had heard everything.
Another pause, and just as Ghost was about to remark that his arm was tiring, Fable finally clasped his hand with one of hers. “But I’m afraid I can’t have you following us,” he said softly, a note of genuine regret in his voice. His grip on her hand suddenly turned into a deadlock, and while Ghost was not as muscular as Dauntless-born boys like Maverick or Christian, his hands were remarkably strong from years of shooting pistols and dealing cards. As he spoke, his left hand was already moving toward his belt, unsheathing the Beretta and moving it in a deadly arc toward the side of Fable’s head. Her eyes went as round as poker chips, the pupils dilating to the point that the flash of the gun was reflected in them. Unable to wrench free of Ghost’s grasp, Fable ducked low at the last second and bulled into him with a vicious snarl, her shoulder connecting with his diaphragm. Ghost lost his hold on her as he scrambled backward. His boot slid in the expanding pool of blood that enveloped Dante, and he windmilled his arms for balance, but by the time Ghost had recovered his footing Fable already had her gun clenched in both hands and pointed at him.
Laughing at the way that the tables had turned on him, he clapped in respect for Fable’s quick-wittedness, but the sound was muted by the pistol still held between his hands. Fable commanded him not to move, to which Ghost carefully replied, “I would say that you won’t shoot me, but I know if I did those would be my famous last words.” He returned his Beretta to his belt, still disregarding her order. “And here I was expecting you to try to go for the knee to the groin, same as you’d downed Mister Aiken.” Fable gave the smallest of flinches at Dante’s name, and Ghost realized with a lurch that they had been friends. Feeling a thorn of regret at his own insensitivity, he asked more gently, “Truce?” Fable regarded him with obvious distrust, so Ghost solemnly raised his left hand and said, “You have my word that I won’t try anything untoward again, thief’s honor. For future reference, that’s how you know a shady character means what he says. Future being now, so please lower the gun and we can negotiate.” Ghost gave her a dagger smile. Nothing put him in a better mood than breaking the law, cheating death, and putting an enemy in the ground all within the span of a few minutes.
Taking a generous step away from him, Fable relented and tucked the gun back into her waistband. Making progress at a snail’s pace. With any luck, we’ll ride out of here in the Valor, and not in the backseat of a cop car, Ghost thought cynically. Just go, Fable told him. He and Blair were free to leave now—wherever they were going—and she wouldn’t ask questions or follow. “As much as I enjoy being dismissed by an initiate under my jurisdiction,” Ghost said in sunny reminder, “you don’t look like someone who should be alone right now.” That much was true; Fable’s eyes were like windows into a haunted house, somewhere dark and forsaken. But Ghost’s intentions weren’t entirely selfless. Fable had just shot one of her friends in cold blood. In addition to posing a danger to herself, there was the veritable possibility that if she remained on the streets she would be picked up by the police and questioned into giving up Blair and Ghost’s involvement in the killing. After all, it wasn’t as though she had any reason to keep their secrets; she hardly knew the two of them.
“Forgive me, but I must consult with my accomplice at this time. Please stay here, I’ll be right back.” Before Fable could raise any objections or ask questions, Ghost turned and made a beeline for Blair. “Blair,” he said in a loud whisper, even though they were far enough away from Fable that they weren’t in danger of being overheard. “We have to take her with us. She already heard the conversation with Dante and knows most of what we’re planning, anyway.” Blair blinked her cornflower eyes slowly and asked Ghost to repeat himself. He complied, and afterward Blair asked Ghost if he was out of his mind. “Yes, but that’s hardly a news flash,” he agreed. “Just hear me out on this.” And he relayed his fears of Fable being apprehended by the police and snitching on them. It was a godsend that either they or a gang with malicious intent hadn’t appeared already, and Ghost didn’t want to tempt fate, so he spoke quickly.
“There’s something else, too,” Ghost finally admitted when Blair still wasn’t sold. “Valiant and dashing as I may be, hand-to-hand fighting is not my forte... but it is Parks’s, though.” Blair stared at him uncomprehendingly, and Ghost explained further. “This guy is a bit of a living legend. He must have a black belt in, like, five different disciplines. I can’t take him by myself.” Ghost took a sudden interest in his combat boots, his face burning as if beneath a spotlight. “Even with you distracting him.” Blair asked indignantly what Ghost’s plan had been before, and he evenly replied, “Hoping for an improvisational flash of brilliance and an insane amount of luck.”
Two minutes of bickering later, Ghost returned to where Fable was staring listlessly at Dante’s lifeless body, and his belief that she needed to be supervised in the coming hours was strengthened. “Miss Morvo…” Ghost began hesitantly, dearly unsure how to phrase his request. Wanna help us kidnap the leader of Dauntless and interrogate him about his involvement in some pretty shady-as-hell conspiracies? He clapped his hands together. “How would you feel about going on a field trip? Blair and I will explain in the car because we’ve gotta get the hell out of here, like now, but we have a project that we could use some help on, if you wouldn’t mind.”
As Ghost spoke, he idly circled Dante’s body. They couldn’t just leave him here like this, but then again, they couldn’t take him with them, either. The trunk of the Valor was only big enough to hold one body, and today it would need to transport a living one. Ghost hoped that the fact that Dante had been killed in Baneberry would be enough for some lazy cops to overlook his murder; gang violence was an issue more common than it wasn’t in this part of factionless territory, and Dante was the right age to be a hoodlum mixed up in a drug deal gone wrong. There was a lake nearby that perhaps they could dump the body into, but it would inevitably be recovered and when it was, the police would have reason to launch a full-scale investigation. They could also decapitate the body to prevent identification, but that would be too suspicious to overlook and posed the same risk of backfiring.
Or… Ghost returned to the present with a look of renewed intensity in his eyes. Eschewing all the superstitions about stealing from a dead man, Ghost rummaged in one of Dante’s pants pockets and then the other until he turned up the other boy’s wallet. A second of deliberation, and Ghost also took the designer watch at his wrist, a pair of aviator sunglasses from Dante’s breast pocket, and even the braided leather belt that he was wearing. “There we are,” he murmured, giving his work a satisfactory nod. “Robbery turned deadly. Now it doesn’t look so much like premeditated murder in the middle of nowhere.” Ghost was struggling to carry the multitude of items he’d taken from Dante’s person but refrained from asking Fable for assistance. Hopefully when she came back to her senses in a few hours, she’d take half of the several hundred dollars from Dante’s wallet; Ghost was certain that Fable and Blair could use the cash a lot more than he. “Fable, have you thought about whether you would like to accompany Blair and me?” he asked in placating tones. “We could use the extra pair of hands, if you’re willing, and when we’re done we can go get pizza. Does that sound good to you?”

Vex

Mood: Off

Location: Streets

Interactions: Mentions Theo

Getting rid of Bella’s corpse wasn’t as difficult a feat as some might believe. Vex was very methodical about her kills and the fun she has torturing her victims before they take their last breath. While the redhead’s last few hours had been full of agony Vex was smart enough to only hurt her in ways that fit a profile. She had done the same with Ben and many others during her time serving the Erudite faction and Doctor Munro, it was as natural as breathing.

For Bella she chose to create the image that the young girl had ventured too far into the more dangerous section of the factionless territory. She created wounds that fit the vision of a mugging gone wrong, as thought Bella had tried to fight back and been brutally beaten for doing so. Honestly in Vex’s eyes she was doing the girl a kindness, making her out to be far braver in death than she was in life. This was the closest Vex ever came to mercy. The dark haired female left Bella’s body in an alleyway for the rats to pick at until some poor soul stumbled across her. There was no telling how long that would take but people went missing and dropped out during initiation all the time. She didn’t really fear that Bella’s sudden departure would trigger too many alarms and by the time her body was found all evidence of the truth would be destroyed.

A satisfied smirk painted itself upon the young initiates face as she made her way back to the Dauntless compound. She was careful as always not to be seen, to go totally unnoticed and blend in with her surroundings. As she drew closer to the compound a warmth began to spread across the back of her neck and the back of her brain became more and more fuzzy, just a little bit at first but certainly growing. “Shit.” She muttered to herself as she ran her hand across the back of her neck which was beginning to burn. She walked onwards, now safely back in Dauntless territory, until she found herself in need of a rest.

Leaning against the side of a mechanics shop Vex felt warm pokers clawing at her brain. She needed a tune up, she needed one badly, her world was starting to hurt and not in a good way. Looking down at her phone she bit her lip and blinked in relief as she spotted a text from Theo. Doctor Munro must have informed him it was time to tune her up because the young man had sent Vex a set of coordinates in the compound for her to meet him at. Without question Vex put her phone in her pocket and began her journey to meet up with the young ally to her Erudite masters.

Maverick Maddox // Male// 18// Dauntless Born // Instructor
Interacting With: Randi Sanctuaryforall1 Sanctuaryforall1

Is this your usual method to try and get a girl to lift her shirt? Maverick cocked a playful eyebrow at the tease as he slowly approached the table where Randi was currently sitting. His grey eyes danced with an expression that was not quite a warning, but dangerously close. "My tactics for undressing beautiful women usually involve significantly more finesse...." he paused as Randi began lifting up the blood stained garment, his stomach becoming lost in a sea of butterflies for some reason at the thought of the blonde exposing herself. Thankfully, she only lifted up her shirt just far enough for him to see her bandages, any higher and he feared his mouth may have gone dry with nerves. He blinked twice, slowly, to Randi it probably appeared as though he were just gathering his thoughts, but in reality he was carefully ensuring his eyes didn't stray anywhere they weren't supposed to. He was explicitly forcing himself not to cross any unspoken boundaries with Randi... no matter how badly he wanted to.

With barely visible strain, he finally dragged himself back into reality with a quick quip to brush off any questions. "My romantic escapades also usually don't involve this much blood..." he pursed his lips, a smile tugging at the left side of his mouth as he closed the space between himself and the initiate. His proximity to Randi was leaving him nearly breathless. Why did he keep doing this to himself? As if he were testing himself, just to make sure he wouldn't do what he thought he might. He wasn't seriously entertaining the idea of getting romantically involved with Brandish Rose? Better he banish those thoughts from his head and prove to himself he was perfectly capable of teaching her and taking care of her with out god forsaken hormones getting involved. At the "Dr. Maddox" comment, Maverick couldn't help himself. "Had I known you had a doctor fetish I might have suggested that Charlie be the one to conduct this check up." He teased. There it was again! He was flirting with her! What was this? Did he seriously have so little control over himself that he couldn't help but flirt with a beautiful girl? Even if she was an initiate? Even though he was an instructor? Even though he could probably think of a thousand reasonable excuses as to why he should not be getting involved with this girl, it was as if his mouth had a mind of its own.

And of course, Randi's playful reply made him not want to stop. It was taking every inch of self control he had left to prevent himself from locking eyes with her. He was deliberately avoiding eye contact as he leaned forward, deft fingers gently running across Scarlett stained bandages. "We should change those... at the very least." His voice suddenly sounding a bit more serious. He would never forgive himself he removed these bandages to find that Randi had torn her stitches or injured herself foolishly following after him. Randi nodded, giving him a vague sense of permission to remove the bandages, which he did. All the while, he was hyper aware of every single time his fingers caressed her fair skin. He worked painfully carefully, not wanting to aggravate her wound anymore, discarding the blood soaked bandages in the trash can as he removed them. When the angry gash on her stomach was finally revealed in its entirety, Maverick grew quiet, inspecting it, wondering what could have caused it. Letting out a reserved sigh, he moved away to grab some cotton balls and antibacterial wash. "I know I said I wasn't going to ask..." he trailed off as he tore open one of the disinfectant wipes with his teeth, setting down his other supplies next to Randi on the table. "But you gotta give me something here, Sparky." He absentmindedly used her childhood nickname as his eyes narrowed at the crimson gash across her skin.

Before she could protest or come up with some excuse, Maverick removed the antiseptic wipe from its paper casing, "Lay back." his voice was firm, leaving no room for negotiation as he helped Randi lower herself back onto the table. As she laid there, Maverick gingerly began wiping at the stitched up skin, he heard a harsh intake of breath and couldn't help but wince sympathetically. "I know... it stings." He cooed softly as though he were talking to a a child. "Tell me what happened." He repeated again, hoping that, in telling her story, Randi would be able to distract herself from the pain. All the while, he began slowly tearing lengths of gauze with his teeth, ripping them so they were long enough to cover Randi's wound, and gently pressing them against her injured skin. Despite his busy hands, he was listening intently to whatever Randi chose to disclose to him, his grey eyes very occasionally slipping to meet hers for just a moment, but never lingering too long. When he finished, he inspected his handiwork carefully, making sure that no part of her wound was left exposed. "It's a nasty gash, but I think you'll survive." he smiled softly "and I really do need to get you back to the dorms..." he sounded disappointed though, as if he weren't yet ready for their time along together to come to an end.

Contrary to his own words however, Maverick decided to hop up onto the table with Randi, moving the bandages and wipes to the side as he did so. Their thighs were just brushing up next to each other. Maverick had never really had an issue with personal space, and it hadn't occurred to him to ask Randi whether or not this was okay. He hoped it was. He looked down at his hands silently as he sat there next to the blonde girl who had been his first childhood crush. He had watched Randi learn how to ride a bike, was sure at some point they had taken bubble baths together as children, after all their families had been quite close. He had known this girl his whole life, and yet now, as he sat there, he felt like he was talking to a completely different person. "When did you get so grown up?" He smiled softly, his grayish green eyes finally falling on hers with out wavering. Perhaps if Randi had been able to read minds his stare would've given away too much information, it was already pretty intense without any supernatural deciphering.

His hand, as if moving on its own, came to rest on her thigh, just above her knee. It was an innocent enough touch, his thumb gently rubbing over her soft skin absent mindedly. As soon as he realized what he was doing he suddenly jerked his hand away, a hot blush rising to his cheeks as he realized he might've caused a scene. "Sorry I uh... I forget that you're an initiate sometimes..." he shrugged honestly, he knew he wasn't supposed to touch her like that, wasn't supposed to feel this way about her, and yet his instincts seemed to have their own plans. "Gonna get me into some serious trouble, Sparky." He teased, lacing his fingers together in his lap to make sure he didn't accidentally touch her again.

Blair Avalon // Female // Age 16 // Dauntless Born Initiate // Divergent
Interacting With: Ghost Aviator Aviator Fable Sanctuaryforall1 Sanctuaryforall1

Blair had watched the entire interaction with a sickeningly familiar feeling of helplessness. Despite her ability to physically wrench herself free from Dante's grasp, after she had collided with Ghost, Blair began to feel the unwelcome chill of fear leech its icy tendrils down her spine. Everything was happening so fast, and yet all too painstakingly slow for Blair to bare. It barely even occurred to her that Ghost had twisted his body in midair to serve as a shield for Blair, when she landed hard on her back the pair only made rushed eye contact for the briefest of seconds before Ghost was once again struggling to his feet, ever on the offense as Blair tried to still her spinning world. Like an answered prayer, Fable Morvo had fought her way into this chaotic situation. But the scene before them quickly curdled into something much darker, and Blair's stomach felt as though it were trying to swallow itself as she observed the red head battle with something much worse than demons. She recognized the guilt and regret in her fellow initiates eyes before she had fully processed the gun shot. Dante Aiken was dead, and Fable Morvo of all people had been the one to pull the trigger. The group sat there in an icy silence, and Blair found herself once against questioning why the universe had given her the ability to warp reality with her mind if it had no intentions of granting her the courage to use it when circumstances demanded it.

It all felt like a cruel joke to her. That her powers insisted on making themselves known when Blair wished to keep them concealed, yet when she truly needed them the supernatural ability retreated to a dark corner of her mind that she was seemingly unable to access unless she utilized the utmost focus. Blair's mind was taking longer to catch up with her surroundings than her body. By the time the crimson liquid had began to pool around Dante's limp body, Blair's slender fingers were already grasped over her mouth in a painfully shocked expression, as if she didn't trust herself not to let out a whimper of grief and despair at the lost life of her would be murderer. Ghost, however, was much more seasoned with handling sudden death, so it seemed. Barely a minute had passed before he had taken on to more important things, like negotiating with the new enemy, the one currently holding the gun. Blair didn't think Fable was a threat... but then again, she hadn't thought Dante was going to be one either. She felt horrendously and embarrassingly naive for her actions. Perhaps if she had never gotten out of the car, if she had only listened to Ghost, they could've avoided all of this. Dante would still be alive, Fable would not be a murderer... but their shared secrets would certainly no longer be safe. Suddenly Blair found herself questioning how much this secret was really worth. To her, her divergency was simply a risk to herself, but Ghost had made it seem as though the answer to her own inner questions was the answer to a much larger societal problem that was singificantly more important than just Blair herself. This was bigger than all of them, but Blair couldn't quite understand that yet.

It didn't take long for Ghost to pull out of her momentary lapse in reality. Speaking to her as though there wasn't currently a dead body becoming colder by the minute laying mere feet away from them. The first time he spoke to her his voice sounded as though it were muffled through a blanket, Blair didn't process a word of it. With a shake of her head and a blink of her eyes her dazed look must've insinuated that she hadn't even remotely heard him, so he repeated himself. At his proposal, Blair's response was more of a knee jerk reaction than anything else. "Absolutely not. Are you insane?" Her voice was a harsh whisper, a verbal slap to Ghost. She was not about to drag Fable into more trouble than she had already gotten into. Blair was putting her foot down here, she was already endangering enough people as it was, she didn't need the fiery red headed putting her life at risk as well. But Ghost was relentless, and as Blair should've expected, was holding an ace up his sleeve that was about to force Blair's hand. She stared at him blankly for a solid second, her facial features broadcasting righteous disbelief that Ghost had even said what he had. "Are you kidding me?!" Her harsh whisper cut through the air again. Perhaps if this situation hadn't been so dire the interaction would've been comical, Blair's outrage and forced silence were a cocktail for disaster and she wanted to grab Ghost by the shoulders of his expensive looking jacket and shake him. "You dragged me all the way out here putting both our lives at risk to tell me you don't even think you can take Obadiah in a fight? You're insane." she turned on her heel, momentarily facing away from him as a humorless laugh racked her body. "You're insane. You're going to get us both killed. What the hell are we doing? We're gonna die." She threw her arms up in surrender as her stormy blue eyes slowly began to accept that any arrangement she ever came to with Ghost was going to be nothing but chaos.

Whatever self justifying retort Ghost bothered to come up with, Blair was no longer listening. She had began cautiously pacing closer to Fable, who at this moment seemed more reliable than her already established accomplice. She took a deep breath as her mind raced through the dozens of possible outcomes this conversation could reach. Ghost had already shifted targets, his conversation with the red head was proceeding slower than paint drying and Blair knew why. Fable was in shock, of course she was. Blair had been in shock at the mere sight of Ben's mangled body the other day and she had not even been the cause of it... or very close with the victim. Fable had just killed someone who up until moments ago she had believed to be her friend. Her morals were rocked, the ground beneath her was probably shaking, and Ghost was adding more straw to the camels back by trying to convince the girl to continue an even more dangerous journey with them. It would've overwhelmed Blair too. In a very fitting manor, Ghost seemed to be proceeding by the erudite handbook. Justifying his suggestions and trying to get Fable to see ration and reason. Blair had some erudite in her, and perhaps that was why she was able to discern that perhaps one of her other identifying factions would be of more use in communicating with the amity born girl right now. Amity, up until a few moments ago it was what Blair hated most about herself, her amity made her feel weak, but she needed to learn how to see it for what it was, an asset.

While Ghost busied himself with ensuring that Dante's murder looked significantly less suspicious, Blair silently closed the distance between herself and Fable. She knew she was taking a risk as she reached out her hand, slowly looping it with Fable's. She didn't try to justify anything, didn't attempt to implore the girl to see reason. She merely looked at her with a sad smile, a look that communicated gratitude and at the same time deep remorse. "I'm really sorry about Dante." she said calmly, giving Fable's hand a soft squeeze. "Nobody should have to go through that." She shook her head softly. For a moment, she felt boned with the red head. Two young girls who were forced into situations they didn't want to be in. "Fable... Ghost and I could really use your help.... I don't think we can do this without you." She clung to the other girls hand as it was strangely comforting. Despite the fact that Blair and Fable had never been particularly close, she hoped that if this incident did nothing else it would help bring them closer together, unified by their shared trauma. "Please come with us."

Bloom

Mood: Curious

Location: Testing Center

Interactions: Cas

Bloom took a step to the side to allow Cas to pass as the final initiate entered her room for testing. She gave the young girl a gentle smile and thought back to a few minutes prior when she was encouraging Griffon before his simulation. Honestly, Bloom prayed Cas did well in her simulation since it seemed that she was not only having to worry about herself but Griffon as well and she wanted the young woman to be able to celebrate a personal victory. “You’re going to feel a slight pinch.” Bloom warned her as she prepped the needle to inject the serum. “I’m sorry.” She uttered as she noticed Cas wince and her jaw clench when the needle entered her skin. While Bloom was in Dauntless and was a fighter she didn’t like to see others in pain, especially those she was supposed to be looking out for such as her initiates now that she was an instructor.

Her first day certainly hadn’t gone how she would expect but then again Bloom hadn’t gone to her shift at the bar last night expecting to leave it as a new instructor for these initiates. She had witnessed several harsh fear simulations and couldn’t help but wonder how many of them had been based off of real-life experiences. She knew several of hers had during her own initiation and could still picture the harsh adventure of trying to escape crocodiles and bats during her own fear sims as well as a simulation in which she was once again at the mercy of another who hurt her greatly. Her instructor, Ronnie Elwood, had to calm her down after that one and she was still very close to Ronnie after that, the woman swearing to never tell another soul what she had witnessed in that simulation. Honestly, Bloom owed Ronnie a lot and knew she should pay the woman a visit soon as her mechanic shop, and perhaps see if she got the old motorcycle that had become a personal project up and running.

Her thoughts faded as Bloom focused back onto the simulation now playing out on the screen before her. It seemed that in the simulation Cas was racing towards some yet to be seen destination with Griffon running alongside her. Interesting. Bloom thought as she watched the two children running through the rain with gasping breath and felt her heart tighten for them, knowing that what was about to happen wouldn’t be easy for Cas to see since this was a fear simulation. As the simulation continued Bloom’s brow raised slightly as the rain suddenly disappeared out of nowhere. It wasn’t super significant but the former bartender still found it incredibly interesting that the simulation had changed in such a seemingly insignificant way but also some might say to Cas’s advantage. No matter, Bloom wouldn’t mention it in any reports or even to Cas, it would be her little secret. She had no desire to bring unnecessary stress or scrutiny on the young girl in front of her.

Continuing to watch Bloom took mental note of how quickly Cas registered the threat and danger of the situation before it had even fully arisen. It wasn’t an impossible response and she could chalk it up to the dark-haired young woman having a keen intuition but still, it was…interesting. Bloom winced as Cas shoved herself and Griffon off the bridge and the two tumbled to the ground below. She wanted to see if the simulation versions of the children were alright but the simulation ended as Cas awoke beside her.

Getting to her feet Bloom quickly stepped over to check on the young woman. “Cas?” She called her name gently but clearly, so the girl would hear her and hopefully respond. “Are you alright? Are you having a bad reaction to the serum?” She inquired knowing that the serum could sometimes make people ill. When the girl replied Bloom nodded her head in understanding and was tempted to give her a supportive touch but refrained, not knowing how the young woman would react. “You handled it well.” She replied encouragingly as Cas got to her feet. It seemed that Cas didn’t want to hear any more than that because a heartbeat later she was departing the room with a ‘thank you’ and a small smile. Bloom responded with a nod and her own smile before a second later Cas was gone.

Having no more initiates to test for the rest of the day Bloom began to clean her testing space. She placed any remaining serum in a secure area, disposed of used needles, and updates the system with the initiates new simulation scores. As she did so she thought over Cas’s simulation again. It stuck out in her mind for a few reasons but none of which she planned to discuss with anyone else.

Nerdy. Nerdy.

Ghost // Male // Age 18 // Training Instructor // Erudite to Dauntless

Ghost knew he was taking a gamble in inviting Fable to accompany Blair and him; that he was reminding her that they were two criminals on the run from the law with an agenda of their own. For a second, as her expression wavered, he was sure that she would lash out in rage and grief, reminded of the fact that if not for them, her ex-friend would still be alive. Ghost’s pulse kicked up a notch and he subtly shifted forward on the balls of his feet, ready to lunge forward and slap the gun out of Fable’s grip at the first sign of her going for it.
But perhaps Ghost had underestimated her. Because as her gaze flickered between Blair and himself, he saw a quiet, steely strength there, and with astonishing calm given the fact that a gelatinous glob of Dante’s brain matter splattered the asphalt next to her shoe, Fable agreed to help. Ghost wasn’t sure if her dearth of emotion was a good or bad thing as she started toward the white Valor, its idling engine a soft purr from where it slept beneath the lamppost it had nearly collided with. He looked to Blair, nodded in Fable’s direction, then gloated, “You can admit it was a good idea, anytime you’re ready.” Blair simply glared daggers. In response Ghost threw her a bright, charming smile, more dangerous than any blade, and turned and sauntered after Fable.
By the time he got there, Fable was tugging open one of the doors to the Valor’s backseat. Ghost gently cleared his throat and stuck out an arm to slide the door shut before she could get in. “No offense, Miss Morvo, but you’ll be riding shotgun, where I can see you. Unless you’d rather surrender your pistol to me at this time. She’s not an old vehicle, and it’d be such a shame to get blood all over her fine leather interior, you see.” As Ghost had expected, his feeling of distrust was mutual, and Fable was not keen to give up her weapon. She obediently slipped into the passenger seat. Before she could close the door, though, Ghost caught it and said, “Fable?”
For the first time that afternoon, there was a tinge of uncertainty in his voice, as conspicuous as a sour note struck on a piano. He met her two-toned gaze and held it, his expression softening. “Your first kill is always the hardest,” he said quietly. A nameless ache formed in Ghost’s chest, but he kept talking. “You stare into your victim’s eyes so intensely that you see yourself and your gun reflected back at you, and you can’t help but wonder if in a parallel universe, there’s another version of yourself who found a solution that didn’t involve pulling the trigger. And then you start questioning how all of your subsequent decisions from that point forward would have been changed on the basis that the person making them wasn’t a murderer.” Ghost caught himself nervously toying with his gold chain-link bracelet and crossed his arms to keep from doing it again. “But it gets easier after that first kill. And for some people, that’s a good thing, a necessary thing.” He heard footsteps from behind, signifying Blair’s approach, and Ghost quickly turned away from Fable’s open door, feeling oddly guilty.
Blair clambered into the backseat and helped Ghost to arrange the armload of items that he had confiscated from Dante on the floor of the side that she wasn’t sitting on. “Stolen goods in a stolen car, how appropriate,” Ghost mused as he plucked a few bills out of Dante’s wallet and handed them to Blair. “For you, mademoiselle. The fruit of our misdeeds.” The cash amounted to just over two hundred dollars, but Blair hesitated before accepting it. Greed warred with respect for the dead on her face. “Well, he’s not going to use it anytime soon,” Ghost said in an undertone, mindful that Fable was sitting just in front of Blair. With a sigh of resignation, she accepted the money.
Ghost ducked out of the backseat and closed the door behind him, walking around to the driver’s-side door. Thankful that no hoodlums had stumbled along the idling car and claimed it for themselves during the altercation with Dante, he got in and shifted the engine into drive. He looked over at Fable. “You’ll want to put your seatbelt on,” he advised gently, and took his own advice. As soon as the latch of her buckle connected with a metallic snap! Ghost pulled off the curb in a burst of acceleration that flattened all three passengers against their seats and screeched around the nearest corner, racing to reach Washington Park before Obadiah.

* * *

It was a pleasant if somewhat humid day, the sky a cloudless azure and the breeze warm. Washington Park was swarming with people, joggers doing laps around the dirt trail that ran the park’s perimeter and golf carts traversing the rolling hills between holes along the expansive course. Pines and cypresses towered high overhead, producing dark splotches of shade that families picnicked under. Dogs on leashes yipped at one another as their owners led them around the track.
Ghost circled around the small lot populated with sun-warmed vehicles and illegally parked at the base of a small ravine, making sure the Valor was obscured by thick nests of trees and brambles from most angles. “Everyone out,” he ordered, turning the key in the ignition and flinging open the driver’s-side door. Blair and Fable joined Ghost at the trunk, which he opened to reveal a duffel bag, a long coil of rope, a military-grade tranquilizer rifle, and a scroll of paper which, when unfolded, revealed the full layout of Washington Park in detail.
“Time to talk strategy,” Ghost said, weighing down the edges of the map beneath the duffel bag and coil of rope. “Fable, as you may or may not know, the goal of this job is to subdue Obadiah Parks—corrupt politician, leader of Dauntless—long enough to have a chat with him about the growing number of disappearing individuals who are presumed Divergents.” Fable’s expression darkened like a thundercloud, and before she could interrupt, Ghost added, “No, we’re not going to kill him or harm him in any long-term way that he’ll remember, because we have this.” With an elegant flourish of his hands, Ghost pulled a vial of blue liquid from a pocket on the duffel bag. “Memory serum. Don’t ask how I acquired it, because I won’t tell.”
For a handsome fee, anything could be acquired from the factionless, many of whom made their livelihoods dealing illicit drugs, as Ghost was painfully aware every time he added to his ongoing stash of lull. The memory serum, in addition to the truth serum which they would use for the actual interrogation, had cost a pretty penny that Ghost’s bank account was still feeling. The million dollars that he’d earned from Young’s coffers would keep him well fed for a while, but the small fortune wouldn’t grow unless Ghost made it, and he reminded himself to research the latest news on the stock market tomorrow, before he invested.
“Anyway, here’s the deal: Blair will meet with Parks as planned, to discuss a matter of great discretion to the Parks family. Since this is family business and Parks is on friendly terms with Blair, he will call off his bodyguard, Stapes, an ex-soldier who accompanies him everywhere. While Stapes takes a few laps around the area, it will be your job, Fable, to divert the man’s attention from Parks while I make my move on him.” Ghost ran a hand through his hair while he talked, as if preening his feathers. When he swept his bangs out of his eyes, they were alight with the glow of a madman. “Do whatever you have to do to take his eyes off his charge, just don’t make him suspicious. I recommend trying to appeal to his better nature. Point to the oldest, perviest-looking man you can find and claim he violently attacked you. It’s a good thing that you’re wearing all black, because no one will be able to tell a bloodstain from water when it’s wet. Turn it into an Oscar-winning performance; don’t spare the hysterics.”
Ghost withdrew a Sharpie marker from the duffel bag and circled two patches of woods. “This is where we are now,” he said briskly, pointing to the first circle. His finger moved to the second one. “And here is where Blair and I will set up our ambush for Parks. While you talk with the man, Blair, I will be perched snug in a tree with the tranquilizer gun.” Ghost turned away from the map and began to pace in a circle, thinking out loud. “It is of utmost importance that we take down Parks before his bodyguard. Stapes will be stationed within Parks’s line of sight, and if Fable incapacitates him too soon, Parks will realize the ambush for what it is and we’ll scare off our quarry before we have the chance to nab him. I’ll shoot Parks while he is deep in conversation with Blair, and when he cries out for Stapes, the bodyguard will turn to look for him. That’s when you, Fable, go in and put your combat training from Phase One to use. Deliver a strike that puts Stapes down for the count, and Blair and I will be sure to administer some memory serum to him before we’re on our way with Parks.” Ghost looked up at the two girls, his chin resting pensively in one hand, still pacing like a fox in a box trap. “Does everyone understand their role in this operation? If so, then let’s move out and get this show on the road.”

Charlotte "Charlie" Stark || 20 || Medic || Dauntlessborn

Charlie had spent the good half of an hour weeping softly on a lonely park bench outside the police station. People walked by as if she didn't exist and she was grateful for the anonymity, not wishing to converse with strangers, or friends for that matter. She wished she could confide in Ghost about all of this, Ghost and Caspian were roommates and seemed to be good friends, but Ghost had been MIA since the simulations and Charlie had no idea where he was. She looked at her phone, but he hadn't replied to her last messages so she didn't feel the need to message him again. She would talk to him when she saw him next, she didn't think she could stand to have a conversation with him unless he was in a good mood, and she couldn't figure that out over the phone. Maybe he was grieving by himself anyway, or maybe he didn't know Caspian was dead yet. Her heart went out to Maverick, thinking about how Mav and Caspian had only been reunited recently, and now the two would never be reunited again, not unless there were some type of afterlife that they would all go to. Charlie rubbed at her red and puffy eyes, she hadn't cried like this for a long time and she felt tired from the exhaustion of it all. The day just didn't feel real at all, and she had no idea how to process the death of one who was so close to her, the initiates she'd been inspecting recently had been disheartening and awful, but this was different, this was on a totally different level. She pulled her sleeves over her wrists and began to chew on the end of it, a habit she had gotten out of long ago, but one she sub-consciously was going back to now as a coping mechanism. One more thing bothered her, the idea that people thought she had killed Caspian. The idea was disgusting and wrong, in no world would she ever even harm Caspian, not by choice anyhow, and she made sure not to do it by accident as well. The evidence they had given her had made sense but it had broken her heart that someone had done it to frame her. Who had she harmed so badly that they would do something like this? How could she explain to Terra and Felicia that it wasn't her who had done this!

That's when she remembered, after she had seen Caspian, she had bumped into Noah, and then she had gone home in a completely different direction to Caspian's apartment. But Noah could give her the evidence that she needed to prove that she hadn't hurt... killed Caspian. She looked at her phone and flicked through the names, finally landing on Noah's phone number, she took a deep breath, and hesitantly tapped the phone icon. She held it up to her ear, and continued chewing on her sleeve until the phone finally stopped calling and Noah's voice rang over the speakers of her phone and into her ear. "Hello? Who is this?" Charlie bit her lip and took a deep breath. "This is Charlie, Noah, I need to talk to you." She said, there was a notable silence on the other side, before Noah replied asking what for. "I would rather talk in person, can we meet up, now?" Charlie knew that this wasn't a good idea, and that Ghost, Bloom and even Caspian would tell her not to do this, but Charlie felt competent to handle her own business. Noah replied saying that he was free, he suggested the bar, and Charlie shivered at the memory of when he had drugged her. "Not the bar, I was thinking we could just..." Charlie was interrupted by Noah. "It's either the bar or my place Charlie." He replied, and Charlie shivered at the thought of both those options, on the one hand she hated the bar, it's the last place she had seen Caspian and it is where Noah had drugged her and Ghost had saved her. But to go to Noah's place was dangerous on it's own as well. She needed someone to watch her back, but she didn't want to talk to anyone about how she was suspect number 1 for Caspian's murder. "We can meet at your place, this is really important to me Noah." She told him, and listened as the silence droned on before he told her his address and she thanked him and hung up. She took a deep breath and stood up, and began the terrifying walk towards where Noah and Harrison lived.

Standing at the door, she hesitantly knocked on the door, waiting for Noah to come and open it up. However, when the door opened she saw Harrison's tall muscular body in front of her, and she was immediately teleported back to the times of initiation, where Harrison and Noah, Alyssa and Wolf would all beat her to the point of unconsciousness. She felt her skin go cold, and she couldn't breathe as Harrison looked her up and down, his eyes wavering over her like a disgusting pervert. "Is Noah here?" She asked, her mouth dry with fear and pain, Harrison laughed and motioned her inside, she held her breath and walked in, flinching as Harrison slammed the door behind her. She was surprised at how neat their apartment dining area was, she had expected a mess for where two boys lived. Noah sat on the couch and he waved at Charlie, she blinked. This felt like a hazy dream and she was almost certain this was a bad idea, but it was too late to turn back. She walked towards the couch and sat down, leaving a lot of space between the two of them so there would be no likelihood of Noah trying to touch her in any way. She watched as he also looked over her, but his eyes stayed on her own eyes, as if there was something in them that he wanted. Maybe he was simply analyzing the redness, and figuring what it was. She took a deep breath. "Noah, I need you to help me." She said honestly, and watched as Noah smiled, with a disgusting smile, she shivered. He said something along the lines of he would be glad to help, as long as he was compensated. Charlie mutely nodded, not agreeing to anything specifically, but needing his help. The conversation continued, Charlie tried to keep as much under her control as she could. She asked Noah if he remembered the other day when they had bumped into each other and walked together on their way home. Noah was craftier than Charlie expected, his answers quite anonymous, but eventually he admitted to remembering it, and Charlie breathed a sigh of relief. "You've heard that Caspian has died?" She asked, Noah raised his eyebrows. "I heard that he was murdered." Charlie felt a stab at her heart. "Well... You are my one witness to the fact that it wasn't me, because I was with you walking home when it happened. I need you to witness to that. Please." She felt her heart wrench. "And what do I get?" Charlie gulped as Noah shuffled forward and his hand gripped her knee tightly, her head spinning. She tried to shuffle away, but stopped when Noah's grip tightened painfully. She had hoped Noah would just admit to it, she wished she had been recording but she hadn't thought of that before, and now she was stuck in a sticky situation. "I will owe you a favour." She said simply, and watched as Noah thought about it. Finally he smiled, and sat back. "Okay, deal." Charlie said, and ripped herself off of the couch. Walking to the door Harrison again opened it for her, but this time as she walked out he slapped her painfully on her bottom. She yelped, and rushed away with a red face as the sound of the boys laughter faded in the distance.

She picked up her phone and dialled Bloom's number, holding the phone to her ear again. "Bloom? Where are you, I need to talk to someone." She said, a sob wrenching out of her.

Christian "Chris" Parks || 16 || Initiate || Dauntlessborn

Chris looked at those around him and waited for the first person to agree to use the zip-line, he wasn't sure who he expected it to be, but also wasn't surprised when Cassidy put her hand up and jogged up to the zip-line. Chris helped her into the harness and talked her through the way that it worked, showing her where to grip and telling her the dangers of the zip-line. She listened, nodded and grinned at the excitement, and Chris smiled back, happy that she was excited to try this Dauntless tradition. At one point in time everyone had come to do this together, but now people split into smaller and smaller fractions as if there were allies and enemies. He knew that was a dramatic way of looking at it, but even Blair didn't hang out with him or Poppy or Randi, it was like everyone was holding secrets and doing things alone nowadays. He jsut wished they could all do things together again. Even Fable had disappeared today, he had been hoping to spend time with her but it looked like she was just as busy as everyone else. But these people were fun enough, he supposed, he just didn't know them very well. Desdemona, Azrael, Cassidy. Two Abnegation transfers and one Erudite transfer. He stepped back to allow Cassidy to launch herself off of the rooftop, and listened as she did so and made an excited yet terrified scream. They waited for a while, able to watch her half the way before the zipline was too far and too many buildings shrouded their view. "We should know when she's finished, the zip-line tends to twang." He said, and the three of them waited until the zip-line made a noticeable twang from Cassidy reaching the end. He turned to Des and Az, and thought about it for a while before speaking to Des. "I think Azrael should go first, otherwise I won't be able to communicate with him without you or Cassidy here." Christian smiled apologetically to Az and then turned back to Des. She thought for a bit, and translated for Az, before agreeing to Christian's terms. He smiled, and turned to Az, looking back at Des though. "Can you translate for me? Thanks." He then turned to Az, explaining the process of the zip-line to him with Desdemona's help. He finished by letting Az step up and helping him into the harness, before stepping back to let him choose when he would jump off.

Once Azrael had gone, and left their field of view, Christian turned to Desdemona and helped her into the harness. Then when she was in he let her go, watching as she got to experience the adrenaline of the zip-line. It was a mostly enjoyable experience to people, the only person who Christian knew who hated it was Aubrey, and yet she had done it even so, though had sprained her ankle at the same time by leaping out of it before the end. But most people enjoyed it, even those who hated heights, he had always found that interesting. Those who hated the idea wouldn't usually go on, but once people had tried it they usually liked it. He waited for the twang of the zip-line before strapping himself into a harness and leaping off of the building like someone who had done this many times before. He took a deep breath as the air whisked past him, flicking his hair everywhere and stinging his eyes slightly. His eyes scanned the horizon, he avoided the larger parts of the buildings that could easily hit a person as large as him, and only once got hit by the branches of a tall but spindly tree. He finally saw the end coming near and he readied himself to hit the soft padded end of the zip-line, having to brace his legs for the impact. He landed with likely much more mass than the other three, and grunted from the slight pain, but eventually getting down and stretching. The other three seemed to have enjoyed it, though he noted that Cas had a pained look on her face, though she tried to hide it. He walked over to them. "How did you like it?" He asked them, watching as they responded each at their own time. He nodded at their unique ways of describing their experience. "Feel free to go by yourself whenever, but if you need someone who knows the way again I'm usually free." Christian said, before looking at the sky and trying to gauge the time or the weather. "I might head back though, I'm hoping my girlfriend is back from her... trip." He had no idea what to call Blair's little escapades, but he knew that he just wanted to see her and keep her safe. He wanted to strangle Ajax and throttle Ghost, but more than anything he wanted Blair in his arms to keep her safe and to love her.

Christian waited to see if anyone would follow, simply to be polite and for the company, before making his way back towards the Dauntless compound and the dormitories, though he had a sinking feeling that he wouldn't see Blair for quite a while. Cassidy said goodbye as she had to go off and do something, and Christian waved goodbye to her. He made his way slowly but surely back to the dormitories and had a sigh of expected sadness when he saw that Blair was still nowhere to be seen. He sat on his bed and sighed softly to himself as he wondered what he should do while he waited for his girlfriend, he knew that she would want him to do something he enjoyed, but what he enjoyed was being with her. Other than that he really didn't do anything except train. So he decided he might as well do that. He checked to see if anyone was in the room, or if those who had been with him were still there and motioned towards the dormitory doors. "I'm going to hit up the training room, they sometimes leave it open and I could use the break from mental simulation." He said, and made his way out, not openly giving an invitation but having it so that people could join if they wanted to. He walked at a leisurely pace to the training room and looked around, he usually did pull ups or weights, but he wasn't sure what he wanted to do today, he mulled it over in his brain before eventually getting some straps for his wrists and deciding that it would be a good use of energy for him to punch a sand bag.

Cassidy "Cassie" Wickham || 16 || Initiate || Erudite Transfer

Cassidy was quick to offer being first on the zip-line, not only did it feel like the more Dauntless thing to do, but she felt inclined to immerse herself into the Dauntless experience, especially given Christian had said this was a pretty popular Dauntless thing to do. She nimbly leapt up to the stand and let Chritsian help her with the harness. Although she was sure she could have done it herself, she did not refuse the gentle giants help and simply watched what he did to make sure it was correct, only fiddling with it once he had finished putting it on her. She listened to his instructions carefully, and cringed a little when he told her about how she might have to avoid things otherwise they would hit her. That would be an interesting time, as she knew that if something hit her at the speed she would go on a zip-line that it would hurt like hell. She steadied herself and locked her jaw, as Christian stood back to give her space. She took a deep breath, then jumped off of the building, letting out a childish scream of fear and excitement as her body quickly began to build up momentum and she went flying through the air. At first there wasn't anything to avoid, but soon enough the zip-line went past bushy trees which whipped at her skin, buildings that the zipline went through that would easily cut her with broken glass and bricks, and just general things that were around. She knew she was alone enough to screech in pain each time something swiped her, and she could feel the trickle of blood down one arm, and regretted not wearing a heavy jacket. Her body was also freezing, due to the intense whipping of the wind from the momentum. She finally saw the end, and readied herself for the impact at the end, not sure how much she would hurt from this. However, given her very lithe frame and light weight, she was able to bounce off of the soft padded end with just a tad of ground shock to her legs, though it left her so jelly like that she crumpled to the ground as soon as she clipped out of her harness. She giggled slightly, though mostly cringed in pain. That had been a very fun experience, but at the same time she could feel her body complaining from the unnecessary pain that she had put it in. She tried to cut the urge to wish for Griffon's body, which didn't feel pain, but knew that he had his own share of hurt from that. She instead just shuffled to the side and laid on the cool concrete ground, waiting for who would come next.

She hadn't thought about who would come next, but it made sense that it was Azrael, given that only she or Des would be able to communicate with him. She watched as he zipped down and she stood up as he finished and let himself off of the zip-line. "How was that?" She asked, signing happily with him, she watched him answer, her eyes watching his hands as he signed with enthusiasm. "That must have been very different to Abnegation right? I can't imagine there was much exciting things to do there." She said to him, as she thought about her time in Erudite. "The most exciting thing for me in Erudite was watching rich people argue, and that wasn't all too exciting." She said and laughed to herself about the many people she had seen arguing over who was richer or better or more refined. She shook her head and sat down again, waiting for who was next. The next person ended up being Des, and she mostly sat there listening and watching as Des and Az spoke to each other. Soon enough their tour guide finished and he landed with a large hit to the back board, and Cas was immediately grateful for her tiny body comparatively. Once they were all done, Christian went on his merry way to the dorms, but Cas knew she needed to take a different route. "I need to go somewhere else, I'll catch you guys later." She said, waving to them all as she headed in another direction. Once she was out of sight from them, she let the pain she was feeling blossom over her face. Her body throbbed from the impact of the zip-line, her arm stung from the cut it had received, feeling like a fire within her arm, and her head was starting to get a migraine. She felt her vision blur a couple of times and she felt slightly nauseous. She knew she needed to get to the infirmary, and she wished she knew where Griffon was, so he could help her, But alas she had not seen him after their simulations and had no idea where he was.

Cas had to take a break on her way to the infirmary, and took the first bathroom she saw as such, using the toilet as a seat rather than as intended, and she put her head in her hand, groaning as the pain increased. She managed to get under control, and splashed some water on her face before making her way back towards the infirmary. She only hid the pain when people walked by, but as soon as they had she let her self show the pain again, as it made her feel sick not to. Eventually her feet dragged her to the infirmary and she was glad, as she was starting to feel very ill from her migraine, and she wasn't sure how much more time she could stand with the pain her legs and arm were in. She didn't bother to knock, knowing that the infirmary was open to all, but wished that she had, when suddenly upon entering the infirmary, she walked upon Maverick and Randi sitting upon one of the tables. She scolded herself for not paying more attention, and stood up straight, only using one hand to cover the cut on her arm, ignoring the pain in her legs and her head. "I'm sorry, I didn't think anyone was in here. I can leave if you are busy." She said,.

Griffon Mordo || 17 16 || Initiate || Abnegation Transfer

Griffon appreciated Scotty's silence, not because he disliked conversation, but as someone that struggled with memory, he wasn't always very good in conversations. But he also liked conversations as he was happy to socialize and be with people. He was very much a social bunny, having grown up in Abnegation and having had that as his aptitude test, he was someone who liked to have people to live for. He cared little for his own well being, not as someone who hated themselves or anything, but because he desired the well-being of others above himself, and enjoyed watching other people be happy. Therefore, when Scotty finally opened up a conversation he wasn't unhappy in the slightest. He listened, and was surprised when she brought up his journal, he hadn't thought she had noticed it. However he wasn't shy about it, he sped up so that he could walk beside her respectfully, chuckling a little when she apologized for it being so loud. He brought out his journal and turned it over a couple of times, it was a nice looking journal, leather bound and with a pen attached so that he was never without a pen to use, but it was quite obviously worn and used quite a bit, as he had been using it for a long time. He knew he would need a new one soon enough. "It's a memory journal." He said as they walked, trying to think of how much Cassidy would want him to share. He had not thought that sharing their relationship as siblings would be dangerous, but Cassidy always seemed to distrust everyone, so Griffon had agreed to try and not talk about it. But that didn't meant he couldn't talk about anything, just the part where they were siblings. He continued on. "I was in a car accident when I was little, and then after the surgeries I ended up waking up with amnesia. So I try to write things down that I am likely to forget. I like to read back through it, apparently it can help me strengthen my memory." He said, as hep laced the small journal back in his pocket. He didn't say anything for a little while, and thought about what he would say if he was going to have a conversation.

As they were nearing the dorms he came to the conclusion that possibly Scotty also liked to journal, or maybe she had a keen understanding and aptitude towards books and art.
"Do you journal? I admit the Dauntless don't seem the type to journal and read many books but I miss the ones I had in Abnegation. You were a transfer though? I'm afraid I don't remember which faction you came from." He said, realizing that he had asked multiple questions before allowing her to answer one. "Sorry, I should have asked one at a time." He apologized, and waited patiently for her to answer either or both of the questions he had asked her. She seemed very contemplative, and he enjoyed the fact that someone thought before they spoke, it was something he loved about both Cassidy and Fable, and something he occasionally struggled to do. They rounded the corner of the doorway and entered the dorms, Griffon looked around before thinking quickly for a change and bringing out his journal, quickly mapping a crude but accurate representation of a map from where they had just walked to here. He looked up at Scotty. "Would you mind looking at this and telling me if it is accurate? I would like to not get lost in the future and your directions were very thorough." He said, showing her the journal with his rudimentary map. Once she had looked it over and made any changes that might need to have been made, he pocketed it back into his pocket and looked around at the near empty dorms. It seemed like many initiates had other plans today, he had noted that since they had moved to simulations, the dorms were an emptier place, even at night time. A lot of initiates struggled to sleep without terrible nightmares, and because they weren't being physically tested, a lot of people had physical energy to burn, and weren't exhausted already from the training. He wondered where everyone would be though, having only seen Cas and Fable before sims and now having not seem them for a while. He hoped they were okay, and couldn't imagine them in any harm.

Unknowing about whether Scotty was wanting to be alone or whether she was enjoying his company, Griffon stayed nearby to her until she asked him to leave, he really didn't have any plans today and hadn't made any good Dauntless friends to know what to do in the Dauntless compound when you weren't training. He looked at Scotty. "Do you know of anything fun to do in Dauntless?" He asked, perfectly happy for her to say no and choose to do something alone. He had books he could read in his bunk,.

Randi

Mood: Conflicted

Location: Infirmary

Interactions: Mav & Cas

Randi’s jade gaze studied Mav closely as he spoke, his words soft and joking but woven with tones of a warning to them. It was understandable that he would feel like he needed to have some level of caution due to the fact that she was an initiate, and he was an instructor but still, Randi couldn’t help but internally pout. She loved flirting and teasing, it was as easy as breathing for her, but she also didn’t want to make Mav feel uncomfortable or pressured by her comments. She gave him a soft smirk when she heard his reply about romantic escapades and blood but other than that she leaned back, wincing slightly as she adjusted so he could get a better look at the wound.

She hated the hospital and having to deal with doctors poking and prodding her while claiming they are trying to help. Being here with Mav was nothing like that. It was like a breath of fresh air, his touch when inspecting her wound was gentle and warm as it always had been between them. While his gaze remained locked on her wound, her gaze scanned his face and wished she could read his mind. Mav was good at hiding his thoughts and feelings, but Randi was also good at reading people, a useful life skill, and could tell something more was going on with Mav than he would say. Her focus was snapped away from her desire to read him when she heard him mention the idea of her having a doctor fetish. Instantly her soft pink lips rose into a smile as she chuckled and winced. “But then you’d miss out on all the fun.” She replied with a teasing purr.

Instantly she regretted the flirtatious remark as she remembered the micro warning in his tone a few moments earlier. She was so used to flirting with others that she never really bothered to filter herself, but these flirtations felt different. They felt more sincere, more…dangerous. For someone like Randi who knew herself to be more of a one-night stand, flirt for fun, no strings attached sort of gal the idea of her flirtation having any true meaning was a red flag. Mav stirred something within her that she wasn’t sure she wanted no matter how strongly other parts of her argued otherwise. Romance was off the table for her, it was something that was always complicated and tended to get far more messy than just casual flings. Besides, from the way Mav was acting it seemed that her flirtations were becoming less welcome. He probably didn’t mind them earlier when he was so distracted by far more serious matters. Now that he has time to truly process the playful, yet seductive comments Randi got the feeling that he didn’t wish for them to continue for one reason or another. Perhaps she just wasn’t his type, or he had other more promising and emotionally healthy candidates in line for his attention such as Poppy or Bella, ones that would allow a romance to flourish where Randi would try to cut it off. Honestly, Randi wasn’t totally sure why she did that, why she had a constant need to avoid truly romantic relationships, but in the past, she had suspected that it came from a desire to remain her own rather than having a part of herself belong to another. Would it be that way with Mav in the hypothetical world that they gave it a chance? She wasn’t certain but what she did know was that Mav had a lot on his plate already and didn’t need anything else weighing him down or making him more uncomfortable or upset.

As Mav examined the bandages, he mentioned that they should change them and reluctantly Randi nodded her head in agreement. She didn’t really want him to see the wound underneath because she knew it would only lead to questions but after all, he had been through today, she felt she couldn’t deny him this. She held her breath as he peeled the blood-soaked bandages away from her skin, her gaze focused on a cobweb in the corner of the room to distract herself from the warmth of his touch. When the cold air touched the wound, it stung for a moment and Randi blinked a few times, bringing her focus away from the cobweb and back to her current position.

The moment Mav’s eyes fell upon the wound Randi knew there was no way she would be able to avoid being asked for information about how she came to acquire it. As he informed her that she needed to give him some scrap of an explanation and called her once again by her childhood nickname Randi sat up slightly in protest. The movement caused the wound to aggravate a bit and the platinum blonde hissed in pain as she supported herself on her elbows only to be told to lay back down as Mav prepared to clean the wound. “Bossy.” She huffed softly as she lowered herself back down only to gasp in pain as the antiseptic wipe was shifted across her wound. Her gasp turned into a sigh as he once again inquired about the story behind her nasty stab wound and she rolled her eyes. “Fine.” She breathed as she watched him carefully work on redressing her wound. “I was stupid…” She began with a surprising softness to her voice. Randi was never one to lie and this situation was no different but that didn’t mean Mav needed to know the whole story or the names of those involved. “I went out and had a few drinks…some guys invited me to play cards with them and I am really good at cards, so I figured, why not?” She continued with a sigh, feeling disappointed with herself as she remembered the night. “I am usually really careful, no one ever gets the chance to mess with my drinks, but these guys did somehow. I found myself in a bad spot and unable to think and those assholes were clearly cheating so I called a friend.” She said, making sure not to mention Ghost by name. “Things got better after that until those guys got pissed that my friend had messed with them back. They attacked and we fought, and I got stabbed.” She stated as she wrapped up the brief story so that nothing pointed to the fact that she actually wasn’t the intended target of the knife but had taken it for Ghost.

As she told her story she drifted from watching Mav work to meeting his gaze. It was hard admitting she had been in such a vulnerable state, but she found that she would rather her know the truth, at least in some detail, rather than tell him a lie. Lies were never a solid foundation, they crumbled and took everything with them when they gave way or at least that was how Randi viewed them. As Mav finished applying the last of the bandages to her wound she couldn’t help but smile as he told her that she’d likely survive. “Damn, and here I was getting my will ready.” She chuckled in response as she slowly sat up, taking her time and scooting over a bit when Mav took a seat beside her rather than following his own advice.

Leaning back on her palms Randi found herself enjoying the simple moment of just sitting with Mav. Her feet dangled as she sat up on the table, mindlessly moving them back and forth as she took in the moment. It was almost like she and Mav were kids again. She could remember a moment similar to this in which they had been sitting on a porch with ice cream that Mav had bought for the both of them. She never had to tell him what flavor she liked because he somehow just knew. She had been giggling at his little trick of making a spoon stick to his nose as strawberry ice cream stained her face and chocolate ice cream stained his. She hadn’t realized until now how dear that memory was to her, how strongly she had held onto it and recalled it when she needed it most. He was so different from that young boy and yet still the same. That boy had grown up, fought battles, faced challenges and yet still was the kind and generous boy who bought her favorite flavor of ice cream just to make her smile. “When you weren’t looking, I guess.” She replied simply because at some point in time the two of them had begun to look away from one another and missed years of each other’s lives. Internally Randi couldn’t help but wonder what she would have seen if she had never looked away from Mav, if they had stayed as close as they once were. Would they be different people now? She wasn’t certain, but what she did know was that she very much enjoyed the Mav she knew now no matter how much she told herself not to.

When his hand moved to her thigh Randi said nothing, not wanting to ruin the moment. She still wasn’t certain how Mav truly felt and knew she needed to keep herself on a short leash but still she found herself enjoying the warmth of his touch. Her heart sank slightly when the young instructor yanked his hand away as though she were some fire that burned him much quicker than he had expected. As he apologized, she looked down at her lap where his hand had been and tilted her head slightly. She couldn’t help but ponder how often he forgot she was an initiate and what that meant but quickly shut herself down and mentally scolded herself for thinking that way. Glancing over at him she gave him a cheeky grin and declared, “Well that would make use even then.” Her response joking and friendly. She would never actually blame him for any part of the events of the day and was actually grateful to have been able to spend such time with him.

Randi’s gaze snapped away from Mav as the door opened suddenly and she swiftly lowered her blood-stained shirt to cover her stomach. “Cas!” Randi gasped in greeting as she attempted to straighten up but winced at the movement. It didn’t take Randi long to pick up on the fact that the dark-haired girl clearly wasn’t feeling well which was clearly why she had come to the infirmary. “Shit! Don’t you dare leave! What happened? How can I help?” The platinum blonde blurted all at once as she did her best to get off the table and help the girl despite still being weak from blood loss.

Fable

Mood: Hollow

Location: Strategy Meeting

Interactions: Ghost and Blair

Bang. The sound of the gun still softly rang like a lingering phantom in her ears as she listened to Ghost talk. She took in the details of the plan, nodding when she was addressed, listening to her parts as well as the strategy as a whole. She wasn’t sure how she was able to focus on that when all she could feel was numb and yet somehow, she did. Perhaps it was because this conversation was a port in the storm for her mind right now. She was internally drowning in the chaos and grief of Dante’s death at her hands but focusing on this beast of a task gave her something to swim towards no matter how crazy that seemed. She had agreed to go along with the duo, she had driven off with them and left Dante in the road, in her heart she was still there with him.

When Ghost had first approached her after Dante’s death, she wanted to tell him to fuck off, tell him that she didn’t give a shit about any of it because she had just murdered her best friend. She didn’t though. She couldn’t. She had killed Dante to keep Blair safe and she supposed Ghost as well and she couldn’t let that be a senseless death. If she could make it count, then perhaps she could justify it to herself…right? It was what she needed to tell herself as she left her best friend growing cold in the middle of the road, his blood blossoming around him like a crimson bloom. Ghost had insisted she come but truthfully it was Blair who managed to break through the fog of shock that Fable had been lost in when she pleaded for her to join them. She didn’t know either of them well but from what she could tell Blair didn’t deserve to die and, despite him attacking her, neither did Ghost.

Now the hollow girl stood around a makeshift battle map being told her role in the master plan. She was to be the distraction, she needed to put on a show, she needed to look upset and seem hurt. Easy. She was already banged up from her battle with Dante before, her throat was bruised, her clothes covered in his blood as well as her own, her hand was sliced open from the glass, and the icing on the cake was the well-placed bruise from Dante’s backhand. She looked like she had taken a fresh beating and she had no doubts that she had all the sorrow and panic within her to create convincing waterworks, she just needed to open the emotional floodgates she had been holding shut for the past hour or so.

The thought of using her sorrow over Dante’s death as a tool felt so wrong. She should be truly mourning him right now but she hadn’t had the time. She hadn’t even fully processed it and was still in shock though she didn’t realize it. She was just…numb. She couldn’t feel, she almost felt like she couldn’t breathe, she was afraid to let herself slow down enough to truly comprehend all she had done.
Her eyes remained locked onto the map Ghost was drawing on but kept going in and out of focus. She was vaguely aware of Blair beside her and was for some reason grateful for her presence, perhaps because the young blonde had been so kind to her in the moments after she had to put Dante down. Ghost might not have known what Dante meant to her but another initiate like Blair would easily know that the two had been each other’s world practically from day one.

Ghost’s words rand in Fable’s ears again, his speech about a person’s first kill. He told her that she would ponder what-ifs for the rest of her life and Fable didn’t doubt it. If she and Dante hadn’t fallen asleep on that roof the other night, they never would have woken up to find out the truth about Blair and the plans between the blue-eyed girl and Ghost. Dante never would have gotten it in his head to try to turn them in. The two of them never would have fought about it. She never would have spent the last day and a half being annoyed with him. They could be off talking, laughing, having fun right now but instead, she was here, and he was a cold corpse in the street. She would regret having to shoot him for the rest of her life, but she would never allow herself to regret doing it to save someone else. In the end, Dante was becoming a man who would do anything for status and image. Fable had dealt with one too many men like that before in her life and she had the scars to prove it. Still, Fable knew she would carry this sorrow with her for the rest of her days however many they might be.

When Ghost asked for confirmation in regard to understanding the plan Fable nodded her head wordlessly. She knew her role, she knew what she needed to do and since she had already come this far, she knew she couldn’t fail. For now, she would keep herself on emotional lockdown and when the time came she would crack open the walls around her heart and let herself feel again. Blinking a few times she took a step back from the table and looked up at Blair and Ghost with a practically emotionless gaze. “Copy that.”

clicking his tongue as he gave a little skip and a hop down the corridor, jake looked in almost every room as he passed. he wanted someone to talk to, someone to bother, someone to annoy; he was great at that, and he loved doing what he was great at. a grin was etched across his face as he walked, his hands in his pockets. in his head, he had a little tune playing; he couldn't quite remember what the name of the song was, he just remembered a very specific line in it that he kept replaying over and over within his head. it started with a drop and now its pouring! he hummed it to himself, his eyes fixating on a houseplant as he passed. he knew nothing about houseplants, but this one specifically, he had gotten in trouble for messing with before. apparently, you are not supposed to rip out leaves whenever you get bored. that was news to him! he didn't understand how he got ridiculed all the time. he was just doing what he thought was fun! he was keeping himself busy, thats all.

jeez, how long do i have to walk until i find someone to talk to? he wondered to himself, letting out a huff as he shoved his hands into his sweatshirt pockets. he wondered if his mom missed him while he was here. do you think there are people here whose parents just..don't miss them? that was an alarming thought for jake. no, there's no way. his inner conscious mused with himself. yeah, he couldn't believe that either. it was a dumb thought for him to have thunk.

is that someone? his hazel eyes flicked to look into one of the rooms. no, just a shadow. probably his own, too. another huff exited from his mouth, a little more impatient this time; a bit more annoyed. there has to be someone. was everyone just avoiding him? did they know he was coming or something? he wasn't that loud- oh, wait. he had been singing out loud. the hum had gone from inside his head to out his mouth and he hadn't even realized. how long had he been singing? thats embarrassing. but alas, jake was never embarrassed - he was simply a god. hey, was that someone?

his eyes flickered to the other side of the room and - yes, his eyes didn't deceive him - there was someone! he recognized this lady - bloom! "hey! hey! bloom! hey!" immediately he ran over to the glass and began rapping his fist against it to get her attention. "bloom! its me! jake! what are you doing in there! can i come in?"

Ghost // Male // Age 18 // Training Instructor // Erudite to Dauntless
Fable agreed to the plan in the calm, decisive voice of a practiced killer, an intonation that suggested violence. Ghost continued to look at her, expecting her to say more, but nothing was forthcoming. A cold ball of fear swirled in the pit of his stomach. Fable’s agreement seemed to have come too easily when he had been sure that she would put up a fight, that she would at least question the necessity of attacking and kidnapping Parks and his bodyguard rather than immediately accept it as fact. Aware that the silence was lengthening and Blair was looking at him questioningly, Ghost cleared his throat and said placatingly, “Fable, are you sure you feel up to this? There’s really no room for error in the plan, so if you think you can’t incapacitate Stapes, then let us know and we’ll work around it, but—”
Blair’s eyes were molten when she interrupted to point out that Fable knew the risks and had agreed to the plan. Ghost sighed inwardly and consulted his watch. If it weren’t already 4:10, just five minutes until Blair’s scheduled meeting with Parks, he would have argued, but time was a luxury they didn’t have. Stalking back to the open trunk of the Valor, Ghost removed the tranquilizer gun and looped the coil of rope over his shoulder and across his torso. A fraying edge itched against the side of his neck, and he readjusted the rope. “All right, team,” he trilled. Despite the endless possible ways this job could go wrong, Ghost didn’t have to work very hard to interject a positive note into his voice. His tranquilizer was intended to subdue big game, and he’d taken down tougher prey than Obadiah Parks throughout his Baneberry years. “Let’s show Dauntless leadership what a trio of misfits and outcasts can do.”
The three of them scattered away from the Valor in different directions, Fable heading closer to the dirt path while Blair and Ghost melted into the forest. Despite their destination being the same place, Blair and Ghost were mindful to take separate routes to the meeting place, not wanting to risk Parks being a few minutes early and spotting them together. Late afternoon sunlight slanted through tall and imposing pine trees, casting elongated shadows. The grass in the forested section of Washington Park was overlong, tangling around Ghost’s boots as he darted under the cover of darkness between the trees. He moved soundlessly, as if he were stepping across clouds, and the only audible noises were the gentle breeze between branches and birds chirruping from unseen places.
Two minutes later he found Blair standing at the edge of a clearing, waiting, her spine rigid and hands twisted before her in a knot of anxiety. Ghost gritted his teeth, wanting to tell her to relax or else risk giving away that something underhanded was going on, but not daring to call out. These woods were quiet enough that any sound he made would carry, and Parks was very likely already on his way. Ghost’s breathing was a little ragged by the time he circled around the wizened trunk of an oak. He hated running with every fiber of his being, especially when carrying a bulky gun and scratchy coil of rope. However, Blair had chosen prudently; the oak was old and conveniently riddled with hand- and footholds, but was also leafy enough to provide adequate cover. Fortunately for Ghost, years of scaling walls and the sides of houses with intent of breaking in had made him more competent at climbing than he was at running. He secured the tranquilizer around his shoulder by a leather strap and set to quick work shimmying up the oak’s robust trunk.
Still, it had been at least a year since he last climbed, and by the time he settled on a branch high enough off the ground that his location wasn’t obvious to the casual onlooker, a line of sweat had broken out across his hairline. Between the exertion and adrenaline at the upcoming heist emptying into his veins, his heart began pounding like the hooves of a galloping horse. His eyes flickered down to Blair again, where she was standing with her hands on her hips and nervously shifting her weight from foot to foot. Up until this point in the job, Ghost had been stubbornly holding his doubts at arm’s length, sheltering his conviction that all would go according to plan like a small flame against a cold wind, feeding it until it grew into an inferno. But now that he was alone, nestled a vertigo-inducing forty feet off the ground and clammy with sweat, fear preyed on him. What if he pulled the trigger of the tranquilizer and missed his shot? What if Parks suspected that the meeting was a trick and never showed? What if Fable was unable to knock out Parks’s bodyguard and was taken hostage by him instead? Or Blair lost her nerve to attack her boyfriend’s father at the last minute and confessed all they were plotting?
More than anything else, what disturbed Ghost was the ridiculous amount of faith that he was putting in initiates who, until a few days ago—or in Fable’s case, a half hour ago—were little more than strangers to him. Their fates were inextricably entwined together; if one of them fell, they all would. In the past, when Ghost had been making a living from theft, he’d been given numerous opportunities to join with a gang, but he’d rejected them all. Not because he disliked people—in fact, with Caspian becoming more of a stranger to him by the day and still unsure of his new dynamic with Charlie, Ghost was prone to frequent feelings of loneliness—but because he couldn’t bring himself to trust anyone else with his future chances of success. Even when Ghost failed, he had always taken a reassuring pride in the fact that he had failed as a result of choices that he had made independently and of his own free will, not because he had surrendered control or been forced into them by another person.
But now he felt control slipping from his grasp as rapidly as blood drains from a sliced artery. He closed his eyes against the queasy lurch of his stomach. Impulsively, Ghost fished in a pocket of his coat for a cylindrical item and raised the vape pen to his lips. Near the end of the colorful pen was a black circle that outlined the shape of a seven-pointed leaf. When he inhaled, a substance stronger than nicotine filled his mouth. He took three prolonged hits, holding his breath each time to let the vapor better settle into his bloodstream, then decided the rush wasn’t strong enough and went back for two more. By the time that Ghost returned the vape pen to his pocket, the tips of his fingers were devoid of feeling, and he very nearly dropped it. A welcome wave of dizziness washed over him, and he loosely hugged the trunk of the tree with one arm, dimly realizing that there was a possibility of falling but not particularly concerned about it.
He blinked slowly and let his eyes flit down to Blair again, where she appeared to be deep in conversation with a man— Obadiah Parks had arrived, and Ghost did a bewildered double take to confirm this fact. He’s been here for how long, while I’ve been getting high in a tree?! Ghost thought incredulously, unable to fathom that, as the only experienced criminal within his, Blair, and Fable’s alliance, he would be the one to screw up the job. Trying to move quickly without making any noise, he fumbled for the tranquilizer, lifted the strap it hung from over his head, and found a small pocket between leaves to aim through. Parks’s back was angled in the direction of the trunk, and with Ghost being perched up above, he had a direct shot between the man’s shoulder blades. He was outside earshot of the conversation, but he could see Blair’s lips moving and wondered whether she was really informing Parks about his son’s ailment, as she had said she would, and not betraying Ghost and Fable as traitors. Sure, that’d mean Blair too would be apprehended on the offense of being Divergent, but Ghost knew that people didn’t always make the logical decision.
He was in the midst of lining up the shot when something moved in his peripheral vision: a dark streak, humming lowly as it sailed past his ear. For a ludicrous, heart-stopping moment, Ghost thought that Parks’s bodyguard had shaken off Fable, wised up to the ambush planned for his charge, and was firing at Ghost’s discreet location. A spike of fear shot through him, and it took all of his self-control to fight off the reflexes telling him to prematurely pull the trigger, or worse, leap aside and most likely fall to his death. Bracing himself against the branch with one hand, Ghost lowered the tranquilizer and scanned the nearby forest for signs of danger.
There it was again! A small shape almost too fast to see swooped low with an ominous buzzing sound before zipping out of sight again. Ghost’s eyes narrowed on the hornet circling his head, its tiny wings beating so furiously that they blurred into a tremble. As he watched, it settled on the back of his ungloved right hand, its legs briefly drumming across his skin as it crawled around. Then a sharp stab of pain bloomed in his hand, and as Ghost clamped his teeth together to keep from cursing, the hornet took off again. He knew he should feel lucky that the hornet hadn’t stung his other hand holding the gun, but it was hard when already an angry red lump was rising between his thumb and forefinger.
Calm the hell down, Jacobi. Now is not the time to lose your shit, Ghost thought, trying to keep his cool as he hefted the tranquilizer again. “I mean, is it ever really a good time for that?” he muttered in quiet argument to himself. Below, Blair was making a series of wide, rapid gestures with her arms. She was stalling—that much was obvious—and badly. Reminding himself that he had the easiest part to play in the kidnapping with probably the least risk, Ghost refocused on Parks again, who appeared to be wordlessly shaking his head. Either because he didn’t buy any of the bullshit Blair was spoon-feeding him or he was making an internal promise to punish the no-good culprit who had given his son a potentially lethal dose of lull, Ghost wasn’t sure.
Just as he brought the black metal of the scope close to his eye, there was another low droning in the air. This time, the warning came too fast for Ghost to react. Pain suddenly radiated down his thigh and into his knee, heedless of the fact that he was wearing long pants. A startled breath burst from Ghost’s lungs. He swiftly moved to bat the hornet away and knocked his knuckles against the tranquilizer. Infuriated by this show of aggression, the hornet whizzed away, circling once, twice, seeking exposed skin, and during its next circuit a stinger pierced the side of Ghost’s neck. He was unable to fully stop the whimper of pain, surprise, and fear that escaped his lips. From below, Ghost noticed Obadiah Parks’s head abruptly jerk up.
The hornet flew straight at Ghost’s face with a vengeance. He screamed until panic strangled the air from him.
Running on pure instinct, he dove out of the way, forgetting the fact that he was crouched on a slender tree branch in all his wild fear. Suddenly there was nothing supporting his weight, and his stomach rebelled as gravity seized it. Ghost lashed out a desperate hand, and as the tranquilizer gun slipped from his grasp and tumbled to the earth below, he managed to curl his fingers around the tree branch, grounding his momentum to a halt. Ghost craned his neck back to peer up at where his fists were wrapped around the tree branch, breath shuddering through him and his heart racing. A bead of sweat streaked from his forehead, down the side of his head, and disappeared into his obsidian hair.
Below, Ghost could hear a man’s gruff voice barking in astonished outrage. Dread climbed up his throat; unless he intervened fast, Parks would unleash the full extent of his wrath on Blair. Feeling fortunate that he had outgrown his fear of heights over repeated burglaries, Ghost straightened his elbows and stretched down from the branch as far as he could, allowing himself to dangle, then let go. He dropped through the air, carefully aiming his body, and when the ground came up close, he tucked into a ball and rolled. Ghost came up on one knee, feeling moderately sore in his shins from the impact, but it was a damn sight better than being a mess of broken bones, as he would have been if he hadn’t fallen properly.
He looked up to find the deadly slits of Obadiah Parks’s eyes already focused on him. Aware of Blair standing on the opposite side of him, Parks turned to the side and shuffled a few steps back, so he could see both of his enemies simultaneously. “Blair Avalon. You are my son’s girlfriend. I welcomed you into my family and treated you as one of my own. I trusted you.” Parks’s voice had lost its furious edge and was now steeped in what sounded like genuine regret. The man’s thick eyebrows pressed close together in the center of his forehead, as if he had just swallowed bitter medicine. Despite the raw emotion in his expression, Parks bent at the knees, lowering his center of gravity and raising his fists, adopting a fighting stance. Ghost had heard of Parks’s lofty reputation as a kickboxer in his younger days and wondered briefly if Parks did, in fact, have a weapon on him, but had opted not to use it simply because he was more dangerous with his bare hands. “Is this a horribly misguided attempt to try to seize leadership from me, Blair? I trusted you, and you design an ambush for me, you ambitious, treacherous girl.”
Ghost discreetly eyed the tranquilizer that was roughly equidistant between Obadiah and himself. Knowing that it would only weigh him down for what was to come, Ghost slipped the coil of rope over his shoulder and lobbed it in the general direction of the tranquilizer. Then he sauntered a step toward Parks and saw Blair mirror his motion on the opposite side. “Actually, I designed the ambush and just talked her into it.” Blair threw him an exasperated expression as if to say that Ghost was being impossible. “What? Just taking credit where it’s due. This shitstorm of a heist was my brainchild, let’s make that clear.”
Parks’s gaze snapped toward Ghost, his mouth hanging partway open as he stared, as if trying to place Ghost’s face. “You,” he said at last, clearly unable to retrieve the memory. “I don’t know who you are, but are you aware of the consequences of betraying your faction, boy?”
“‘Betray’ is a strong word,” Ghost replied insouciantly. “I’m pretty open about my contempt for Dauntless.”
He barely got the words out before Parks shot forward like a bullet from a gun, thrusting one leg out in a kick as he barreled toward Ghost. Ghost barely leapt out of the way, but didn’t have time to retaliate before a fist was hurtling toward his throat. Ghost turned and absorbed the blow in his shoulder, but it still felt like getting kicked by a mule. He was rocked backward, his boots scrambling for purchase across the long and slippery bed of grass. Parks capitalized on Ghost’s discombobulation, and the middle-aged ex-kickboxer aimed a roundhouse kick that would have in all likelihood connected with Ghost’s head and knocked his lights out if Blair hadn’t delivered a well-timed chop to Parks’s leg.
Parks whirled on her. Ghost was breathing hard and grateful for the reprieve. Knowing that he had only seconds until Parks’s next attack, he cast about for the tranquilizer gun, which lay half hidden in shadow some ten feet to his right. Parks swatted Blair away with an elbow and lunged for the rifle at the same time as Ghost. They wrestled for it, and Ghost’s front teeth clacked together as he was thrown onto his back and Obadiah crashed atop him. Ghost simultaneously yanked on the gun and kicked one of his legs into the air, trying to use the dual momentums in conjunction to lever Parks off of him, but Parks remained firmly seated on his chest. Ghost growled in frustration as pain erupted from the sites of each of the hornet stings. “Sorry, Pops…” he wheezed between tugs on the gun, “but I will shit in my hands and clap before I lose to a man thrice my age… Blair! Where the hell is my backup?”
Ghost released the gun with one hand, and with the strength of his grip halved, it flew back into Parks’s chest. Surprise flitted momentarily across the older man’s face, but before he could turn the weapon around to use it, Ghost’s other hand whipped free one of the pistols at his belt. If at first you don’t succeed… Ghost mused to himself as he swiped the handle of the weapon at the side of Obadiah’s head, just as he had tried to disarm Fable in the parking lot. And just as Fable had done, Parks dodged, diving to the side in time that the pistol passed harmlessly through air. But Blair had already appeared behind him and used Parks’s momentary distraction to pluck the tranquilizer from his grip. Before he could tackle her around the knees, Blair flipped the weapon and fired a single pink-fletched dart into Parks’s flank.
“Heh,” Ghost panted as he climbed to his feet, “and Blair here didn’t believe me when I said you had some real ass-kicking potential, old man.” Parks threw Ghost a single withering glare that was as hard as a fist and as riveting as a thunderclap. Then his eyes rolled up in his head and he slumped forward, his face pressed into the grass. Ghost looked at Blair with a knifelike smile on his lips. “See? That wasn’t so bad, was it? I’ll count ourselves lucky if Fable was half as successful taking care of Stapes. Now help me tie this mook up, will you?” Ghost bent down and picked up the discarded length of rope, hiding a wince as the lumps on his hand, leg, and neck all throbbed in unison. Blair giggled as she watched, teasing Ghost for his scream moments before he fell from the tree. Heat blazed up Ghost’s neck. “Everyone’s afraid of bees,” he said meekly. And then, “There were fifty of them—a whole nest. And they were those mutant wasps from Texas, the venomous ones where if they sting you, you’ll die within the minute.” Ghost was fairly certain the last nest of mutant wasps from Texas had died out almost a decade ago, but it was otherwise a good defense.
He finished securing Parks’s wrists behind his back and gagged the man with a handkerchief. Ghost watched dispassionately as Blair struggled to tie Obadiah’s feet together, the rope fraying as she wound it. “At least I know how to tie proper sailor’s knots,” Ghost said dismissively, shooing Blair away from the mess she’d made of the rope and taking over. “You need to tie the feet in separate loops, otherwise it’s possible he can wriggle free.” With a thick layer of suspicion in her voice, Blair inquired as to where Ghost had learned to tie people up. “Curious, are you?” he responded with a wink. “I am a man with a diverse and often convenient array of skills. Unfortunately, hand-to-hand combat isn’t one of them, so I appreciate your help bringing this one down.” Ghost nudged the unconscious and thoroughly bound Parks with the toe of his boot. “Now let’s get him to the car without being seen and then check in on Fable.”

Bloom

Mood: Concerned

Location: Testing Center

Interactions: Jake and Charlie

As Bloom moved around the testing room straightening things up she pondered Cas’s simulation once more but quickly pushed it to the back of her mind. Whatever she thinks she might have noticed wasn’t something she would want to see and even if she had she wouldn’t bring it up to anyone but Cas. Pushing the thought out of her head Bloom sighed softly and pulled her hair back over her shoulders as she cleared the counters so they would be clean for the next time they were used.

This part of her new job was pretty much already muscle memory for her. After years of working the bar, cleaning the counters between drinks, she was able to get it done quick and easy. With a flick of her wrist, she tossed the dirty towels into the wastebasket beside the cabinet and did a small excited clap when they went in. It reminded her of when she was an initiate and she and her friends would play drinking games involving trying to score points by tossing items into the trash bin. Those days had been fun and she brought her love of such games to the bar during her first few days there. The patrons had such fun watching her make a game out of scoring trash goals that a few regulars actually insisted a mini-hoop be installed behind the counter. The next day Bloom was surprised to come in and see a bright colored ball and the mini-hoop set up at her station so she and the customers could both play. It was a fun little way to pass the time during slow hours and an even more enjoyable game when the wild crowds flooded the bar.

A sweet whisper of a smile pulled at Bloom's lips as she thought of the memories, she had stored away involving her time at the bar. She knew that as soon as initiation was done, she could take on shifts again but it still felt weird knowing she wouldn’t be going back this evening. As she thought about the events starting last night and leading to now it finally caught up with her how long she had been awake and for the first time all day she felt tired. Soundlessly she leaned back against the counter and took a moment to stretch and gently shake her head to make sure she stayed awake. She still had a lot to do today and couldn’t go to sleep quite yet.

As she stood up from her leaning position a sudden knocking on the door and muffled voice caught her attention. Looking over at the door of the exam room Bloom couldn’t help but chuckle as she watched Jake knock on the glass and wave his hand excitedly. The image reminded her of a jumping puppy excitedly pressing itself to the glass of a pet shop window. As his muffled words and questions became clearer when she stepped closer to the door the brunette and scarlet-haired instructor couldn’t help but laugh out loud. “Hey, Jake!” She greeted as she opened the door. “I was just cleaning up after the testing today.” She replied as she grabbed her bag and stepped out into the hallway beside the boy. “What are you doing here so late? Did you just finish your simulation?” She inquired cheerfully as she locked the door behind her, making sure it was secure. “You certainly seem to be in good spirits.” She added with an approving nod as she smiled at the boy.

Suddenly the sharp ring of her phone came ripping through her bag. Looking down Bloom reached into the side flap and pulled her phone out to look at the screen. Charlie. “Hey Jake, give me a minute, please. I need to answer this.” She informed the initiate politely as she pressed the green button to answer and put the phone to her ear. The sound that met her ear when she answered broke her heart into a million pieces. Charlie was upset, it was clear as the sun on a cloudless day, and Bloom needed to help her. “What happened Charlie?” She inquired with genuine concern in her voice. “I’m still at the Testing Center. Where can I meet you? Are you safe?” She asked, wanting to make sure her best friend was at least safe for the moment.

as soon as bloom was turning to look over at him, the smile only erupted further on his face. he was seriously like a dog. if he had a tail, it would surely be wagging in this moment. he was nearly trembling with excitement that he finally had someone to talk to! he had so much to tell her about, like the bird that didn't fly away as soon as he stepped outside his house and the car he saw driving down road! everything he was going to tell her definitely was useful information. there was no way she didn't need to know about what he thought about eating for breakfast versus what he ate instead! he watched as she walked over to the door and opened it, and he waved at her excitedly whenever she stepped outside to ask him about his day and what he was up to.

"oh - no, i had my simulation earlier in the day!"
he boasted to her,
"and then i needed something to do, and i didn't want to go home just yet, so i came back to see if anyone was still around for me to talk to! and i found you! so it all worked out, really!"
he purred along,
"what about you? how did your day go? did you get to see lots of interesting stuff? i think it would be really cool, to do what-"
abruptly, he was cut off by the phone ringing.
"oh~! who is it? is it someone i know?"
he began inquiring.

he definitely wasn't going to give her "a moment" as she had requested. as soon as she answered the phone, he was nearly on his toes trying to listen into the conversation too. he couldn't hear anything, though - and bloom's face said it all. it was clear that whoever she was talking to was going through something.
"who is it? are they okay?"
he frowned too, wondering how he could help. he could make them laugh or smile! or if they needed protection, he could do that too! he was a tough guy.
"do we need to go somewhere? to get him? errr, or her? whoever?"
he had invited himself along. he was invested now.

Shayla

Mood: Tired

Location: Apartment

Interactions: Open

Fear simulations were rough and today had been no different from the two before. Shayla had found herself stuck in a car that was being crushed in a junk yard. She had managed to get out despite being painfully glued to the seat and had lost a good amount of skin in the simulation doing so. Her back still stung slightly from the sensation of flesh ripping away as she pulled herself free from the sea and the car before it was fully crushed by powerful metal jaws. It didn’t hurt nearly as much as it had in the simulation and honestly, Shayla felt sorry for the instructor who had been forced to watch the gruesome scene. She couldn’t help but wonder if they had looked away or kept watching, she wasn’t sure what she would have done in their position but what she did know was that she was glad she managed to escape the car in the simulation before she was crushed to death inside the metal death machine.

Now Shayla sat on the balcony of her apartment she kept not too far from the training compound. She spent the night in the barracks like all the other initiates but during the day she would return to her home and spend time with her beloved Lev. Currently, the sandy ginger cat was batting at a toy mouse on a stick that Shay was dangling above him. He wiggled his back along the balcony floor as he flailed all four paws towards the mouse in a playful attempt to capture it. The ebony haired girl couldn’t help but chuckle as he did so, her smile genuine and loving as she looked down at her cat.

To many people pets were just that, they were pets, but to Shay, this cat was her life. In a world of self-made isolation, she had this one creature who loved her and who she felt she could love in return. Yes, one day she would have to leave him behind, but for now, she could enjoy this time with him and hopefully worry about that fate another day. Her father had brought Lev to her when she moved out of her parent’s home a year and a half after finding out she was dying. Her father paid for the apartment she lived in and kept it secret from her mother. He knew what Shay wanted and what she feared would happen if she let people be close to her and so instead of insisting he be there for her he provided her with something that could, that she would let into her walled off heart.

Glancing over the side of her balcony as she played with Lev, Shay couldn’t help but watch the people going by below. She saw them laugh and walk in groups, enjoying each other’s company as they passed. Her heart ached at the memory of the times like that she used to enjoy but she quickly pushed the longing away. She had made her decision; she had chosen what would be best and easiest for everyone. Did people hate her for pushing them away out of the blue? She was sure of it. Did it make her regret it? No. Hurting them then would save them a lot of pain in the future. It was the lesser of two evils and she decided to help them out by making the choice for them.
