i'm not sure if this is what you were looking for, but if so, then you were missing the background tag. and you didn't need the [/url] at the end.

Ever time I replace an image with another one, I get it all set up just like you guys have it, press post reply, and it shows up with the beginning tags gone, the link highlighted in blue and the rest of the code in black.

you need to use this tag to set a background as an image. i'm not sure what it is that you're doing wrong, but it doesn't seem like you're putting the beginning of the tag from the code you've shown above.
