A tasty byte of a dark Digimon story.

The year is 2009. Millennials like myself are in our teenage years. In the United States, at least, we grew up in the shadow of 9/11 in a rapidly changing world where online life was becoming more prominent and the ongoing housing crash was something we were blissfully unaware of. Many people think they were simpler times, basking on them with nostalgia and rose-colored classes. But, some know better.

Some know that era was just as rife with sin.

This world did not know of Digimon as real creatures and a real world like some. In fact, Digimon didn't exist in this world; those 90's cartoons many grew up on were stuck without the original adventures. We would just have to deal with Pokemon, Beyblade, and Yu-Gi-Oh on Saturday mornings. Perhaps some other creature-capturing anime took its place. It matters little. This world has no notion of the DigiDestined, and it shouldn't. All it will know is those damned by their destiny. The DigiDamned, if you will.

A handful of young, troubled souls exhibiting one of the six cardinal sins: gluttony, greed, lust, envy, wrath, and sloth.

What are these sins, though?

Gluttony is that insatiable desire for more, whatever that more may be. Whether it is wasted or even self-destructive over-indulgence, gluttony will lead one to do horrendous things in their pursuit of what they perceive as more.

Greed is a total disregard of fairness, equality, and equity. It is for those that are never satisfied with what they possess or how much, hoarding all that exists regardless of whom it harms.

Lust is a different type of urge or desire. A lack of control, a wanton wish; that which makes one throw caution to the wind in pursuit of their immediate desires. Paint it as vanity, paint it as promiscuity, paint it as enticing power; it is all the same regardless of hue.

Envy is that all-too consuming thirst for that which belongs to others. Unlike some sins, it is not the amount or intensity that defines envy, simply the intrinsic nature of wishing for that which is rightfully that of another.

Wrath is perhaps the most clear and known sin. It is destruction, anger, rage, fury, the burning pit inside of your stomach and eyes that glow red with malice. The worst wrath, arguably, occurs when little was needed to incur it.

Sloth is that sin of neglect and apathy. Stagnation like a foul swamp, indifference to the worst of the world, complacent or content with the ails and woes of others. It is the loss of oneself, often so far gone that one need not be distracted from their own unearned comfort.

These sins are often so significant they are etched into the soul so deeply that they remain even when one crosses into another world. That is the story here. Six individuals with their souls etched by a Code Key of sin, brought to the Digital World, and told they were brought as a consequence of a massive war. In the absence of the Holy Dragon Digimon that once kept the world in order, the great Sovereigns have turned to war on each other in the power vacuum. A war that threatens to upset the balance of the Digital World.

These teens would find themselves nearly frozen to death in a vicious snowstorm only to be rescued by what appeared to be an angel. In a way, it was: IceDevimon, one of the many fallen angels. He saved each if the six and brought them to his home in the Liquid Cooled Springs, feeding them, sheltering them, and showing them hospitality in the famous Hot Springs the mountainous area was known for. There, he explained that the system itself chose them due to their compatibility with several partner Digimon, each of which the soon-to-be Tamer was introduced to. The materialization of a D-Tector-style Digivice only further cemented in this fate, effectively proving the six as Tamers.

IceDevimon, with the assistance of his small hoard of Icemon, set out to teach these new Digidestined of their abilities and potential. After basic combat drills with their partner Digimon, they were taken on an assault of a Goblimon scouting party that had been raiding nearby settlements. There, they learned that they could view the stats of nearby Digimon using their D-Tector, if they themselves were close enough in strengh, otherwise it would only read error. They were taught of how they empowered their partners and how they could absorb the code of fallen Digimon to empower their Digimon further. Digimon were creatures, true, but much like the video games of their world, they had levels, attacks, and unique abilities.

Then it was revealed what the true power of their Destiny had bequeathed them: unlimited potential. In this Digital World, all Digimon were born with a set potential. A max level, a limited amount they could grow their stats. This was the way of the world and it had been since time immemorial. It was why such Digimon like the Sovereigns and their Devas were so feared: they were born with far higher levels than the average Digimon. But, the DigiDestined? They had no such limits. They could absorb code and level ad Infinium. Thus, if they wanted to bring balance to the world and return home, they had to do exactly that: level up, absorb code, and fight against the warring factions of the Digimon Sovereigns.

Partner Digimon Lines
In the Interest Check, the original Partner Digimon lines were somewhat constrained. With new sources and to promote flexibility for players, I will allow partner lines from Rookie to Mega to open up to really any reasonable line. I would prefer to avoid Rookie overlap, but outside of that, you are free to submit a character with a Rookie of your choice. What matters most is that they can ultimately Digivolve to the correct Mega, which will be one of the Six Demon Lord Digimon. I am going to go over some following examples of lines. Many of my alternate lines come from video games, specifically Cyber Sleuth, but I will probably accept any explanation from any source material as long as I don't find it super crazy.

Leviamon | Envy Probably the biggest change to the entire line-up. Previously, I was using MarineDevimon as the prior form and that really narrowed down options. Now I will allow the additional previous forms of ShogunGekomon, Dragomon, and MegaSeadramon. This opens up quite a few more Rookies. Otamamon, Betamon are prime examples. There are more, but some do really stray from the core concept here. What this opens up for the most part is the Gekomon and Seadramon line. If someone switches from DemiDevimon, it would also open up that line via the route of IceDevimon.

Daemon | Wrath I would prefer this line to remain as Black Agumon into Monochromon into SkullGreymon into Daemon, but there are other options. Notably, I like the idea of this line being the traditional "greymon" of the group. However, there are other viable lines, such as Goblimon into Ogremon into SkullSatamon. There is also the option of a Black Gabumon route into Black Garurumon which could become BlueMeramon, though I don't find this line as fitting as either of the other two. If you can find another within reason that doesn't overlap, you can ask about it.

Belphemon Rage Mode | Sloth This line doesn't really have another alternative. I think it's pretty clear it was intended to go Phascomon into Porcupamon into Astamon.

Barbamon | Greed If any Digimon opened up more than Leviamon, it's this one. Barbamon being locked into Bastemon was just silly. The three main pre-cursor evolutions all have cool options: Myotismon, Phantomon, and BlueMeramon. I do think Phantomon would probably be the best suited, but the Myotismon into Devimon line up is also iconic. Either way, that would start you out as a DemiDevimon. If you go down the BlueMeramon route, though, there is the option for Black Garurumon (your Rookie stage would be Black Gabumon). This line up, if Daemon remains Black Agumon, could open up options for some type of Warp DNA Digivolution eventually given they're of close-enough lines.

Lilithmon | Lust My original intention for this evolution line was Tsukaimon into Witchmon into Bastemon, but after review, I see other options. If you go the LadyDevimon route, you can go Black Gatmon which opens up Lopmon and Renamon, though I'm admittedly not a huge fan of the latter. There seems to be a lot of interplay between some of these evolutions, too. While I'm not a huge fan of Renamon, I would allow a slightly custom path such as Lopmon into Black Gatomon into Witchmon into LadyDevimon. It seems a lot of the "feminine" Digimon have intersecting evolutionary paths, so I will adapt.

Beelzemon | Gluttony This is gonna be Impon and anything else is fucking blasphemy. The most likely route is Impmon into Wizardmon into SkullMeramon, but I could likely also be flexed on this.
