Ever since the great war, the Sorako have been banned from fishing in the sea. Due to this, they lost their main source of food and to make up for it, the Tsumei run an egg & poultry farm.  All Tsumei children learn to care for the birds and work on the farm from a young age. Many members of the Yosuzume family also take up jobs on the farm, which houses common birds such as chicken, turkey or duck. Those Yosuzume who don't work on the farms are usually in Tsukumoru's library, studying the knowledge of the past. The Haneki family serves as the hunters and guardsmen of the Sorako tribe, but many of Haneki like to travel to the surface and serve as messengers between villagers, tradesmen for the Tsumei, or odd-job helpers for the Tochiko.

Life as an Umiko is always busy. Those in the Amemasu family learn the art of fishing and trade at a young age, in addition to learning the course of life (and death) quickly. Some Shimizu work under the Amemasu, but many are studying about the ocean they live in, the history of their world, and the surface where Tochiko inhabit. After hitting the age of 12, Shimizu begin to focus heavily on politics of the three tribes. As any of them from that family could become the new village chief, it was important that they all understood the value of wisdom and diplomacy. Most of the Hisakawa live away from the main city, but still work under the Amemasu in terms of fishing. Hisakawa often go to the surface and compete for jobs with the Sorako.

Tochiko have existed long before the Umiko or Sorako, and their daily habits remain relatively the same. The Kimura work all day and all night, switching shifts, breaking up fights between the Sorako and Umiko or guarding an otherwise peaceful village. The Nakamura work closely with the Akiba family, both up as soon as the sun rises to open up the market and manage political affairs. One of their main problems is the fight between the other two tribes. First it's fishing, then it's hunting, suddenly there's an issue involving the Tochiko, before the process of conflict begins anew. The Nakamura also work with the Matsumoto, with farms of lifestock and agriculture. They're up before even the Akiba to ensure that food is available for all the other villages. The only family with a relatively easy life are the Suzuki. Many sleep through their mornings, but that's partly due to being awake from day till morning performing at inns, bars, or even in the village center.
