ROYAL FAMILY

open

The weight of your country on your shoulders. The royal family is not held to a high regard by Maritria, yet the burden is on you to decide the best outcome for your nation.

Maritria's people tend to feel a mellow love for their nation; their royals aren't particularly popular, since the country is struggling. These traits might not be true for your character.

Are you the crown prince(ss)? Perhaps one of their siblings? Maybe you're a consort? The royal family could have an ailing ruler for a parent or maybe they've already passed & Maritria's ruled by a regent until the crown prince(ss) marries. Maybe there's plans to usurp the throne. Whatever the circumstance of the family is, do you shoulder the burden of your country or will you play puppet to its advisors? Are you want for this duty or does a peaceful life call to you?

These role slots are for anyone who want to be a part of the royal family, but aren't necessarily in positions to be rulers. For now. If you're extended family, please consider the reason why you'd regularly find yourself within the royal court. Are you particularly liked by the immediate royal family? Are you involved in politics? Additionally, it's possible that members of the royal family have other titles, like duke or knight; things like that.

Moreover, how do you feel that your political enemies have forced their way into your home?

Extra information: If you're interested in taking Maritria's crown prince(ss) role, understand that there's only one crown prince(ss).

Alternatively, if you're reading this role & thinking, "I'd like to be in Rhonne's royal family," also let me know! That character would be part of the "Delegates" role. The implication of the empress sending a family member over to carry out this duty means that you'd likely be the head of the Rhonne delegation; it can definitely be seen as a bit aggressive on Rhonne's part. Or maybe you just ran off from your empress' watchful eye; who knows. Just give me a heads up, whatever you decide.

For now, please refrain from claiming roles like king or queen, unless you have a really interesting idea for a king/queen character! I'm more interested in the stories of a royal court's pawns, more so than one about rulers.

MARITRIA NOBLES

open

Though most in the court live within the palace, some don't! The palace entertains countless visitors who come to do business. This role encompasses peerages. The following are the ranks in descending order:

Duke / Duchess
Marquess / Marchioness
Count / Countess
Viscount / Viscountess
Baron / Baroness

DELEGATES

open

The primary members of Rhonne's delegation. These are people well-versed in public relations & handling delicate situations, personally hand-picked by the Empress herself. Their walks of life themselves can range widely from officially assigned diplomats to simply being notable nobles of Rhonne with prowess in navigating high society. Their talent with social situations means they know precisely when to push & pull in order to sway opinions in their favor. They're manipulative in the ways most relevant to the Empress & they're here to stir the pot.

Rhonne's representatives can be characterized by a fervent devotion to their empress who, for the purposes of the story, should stay a vague idea but have loyal followers. Some see her as a gentle ruler & others a ruthless monarch; many see her as both.

For periphery members of the delegation, like valets or ladies-in-waiting, see following roles! This role is for the assigned ambassadors of Rhonne's delegation.

ATTENDANTS

open

For both parties: Rhonne & Maritria.

This encompasses courtiers, ladies-in-waiting/valets, squires, & other auxiliary roles. These are people who are rather close to the royal family by purpose of being their most confided assistants. These are usually the young children of nobles who were selected by a family of higher standing to serve a particular person or the general house; it's an honor, for the most part, to move up from your own rank. Parents of these children often apply pressure to accept the offer & find themselves opportunities in high society.

It wasn't unheard of for people in this position to manipulate their charge for their own political gain. On the other hand, these assistants may be used by said charge to carry out their bidding.

HONORARY MEMBERS

open

The miscellany! Royal astronomers, artists, poets, jesters, musicians, scholars, etc. As a result of honorary position, it's often that they're exempt from societal norms, within reason. They may have their own attendants, assigned to them by the court. The scholars running about the academic wing of the palace, searching for solutions to solve the country's issues would fall here, particularly.
They can come from all walks of life, but would be now referred to by their royal court title.

SERVANTS

open

You've found yourself employed at palace, serving the court as they see necessary. This role can extend to maids, manservants, butlers, chefs, etc. All who serve the court but are without noble birth & instead earn a pay. It's very possible they have homes outside of the palace that they send money back to. Nobles often don't regard these servants, putting them in excellent positions for reconnaissance & underhanded tactics. However, if caught, the repercussions for them are severe; trial is often neglected & they're hastily sentenced to imprisonment or death.

extra information.

Approved characters are welcome to post!

You're free to use your own codes, but my favorite are these: here & here.

Extra information is welcome! As long as the skeleton is filled out, anything extra is alright.

As a reminder: applications should be posted in the interest check by March 10th.

Dorian is unapologetically
loyal
to his family. Despite being apart from most of them for his entire life, he is willing to do anything for them. Due to his family situation, this often meant that most of Dorian's salary is sent back home. He is a
determined
and
hardworking
and is known to be in the courtyard most of the time to tend to it. He is steadfast in his duties and will let very little deter him from doing them.

He is
excessively polite
towards those of higher position to him or otherwise unknown to him. There were very few people around the palace who he outranked so it was always better safe than sorry. He would often keep his head down and keep quiet until he was acknowledged or given permission to speak. To those he is friends with, they know him to be a
goofy
and
well-meaning
person who found themselves in quite an unfortunate and desperation position. Whenever he makes promises, he does his best to uphold it as best as possible as to not break someone's trust in a deal or engagement with him.

h

istory

Born to a long line of Maritria Palace servants and groundskeepers, Dorian had always been destined to take over his father's position. As such, as soon as he was able to walk, he was brought to the palace alongside his father to begin his training. His childhood memories practically started in the palace instead of his home and he was forced to grow up faster than his siblings. Still, he understood why it had to be that way. It was almost their family tradition— just as the princes and princesses born into the royal family had a duty to take over the throne, their own children were handed over to serve under them. The royal family gave good pay and they needed it anyway due to his mother coming down with an illness that required continued medical attention. There were others like him, young generational servants who he had come to befriend and think of as his second family.

Dorian grew to enjoy his job and gardening had even become his passion. While his father tended to do the more rigorous jobs, Dorian was often put in charge of trimming plants and taking care of the greenhouse. This was the time when he had gotten into some interactions with the crown princess and where they had established a connection— a mutually beneficial partnership. From then on, she taught him how to read and write while he kept an ear out for what the court talked about when she wasn't present. He wouldn't consider them 'friends', their societal difference made sure of that. Dorian is keen on keeping their relationship in a positive light.

At the age of sixteen, an incident occurred. While the princess had visited the greenhouse, Dorian and his father tended to the plants. His father had been the first to notice the underlying smell of oil among the fragrance of flowers and dirt. Before they could really process and figure out what was happening, a fire had erupted from somewhere and quickly surrounded them— oil and plant material aiding its sudden and explosive growth. Knowing their duty was to keep the princess safe and healthy, they immediately began to search for a way out that was safe enough to pass through. They did manage to get out with most of the injuries going to his father— who was both burnt and left with a permanent leg injury after one of the debris had fallen onto him and pinned him down— and himself— where the left side of his body was left burnt with permanent scarring. He recovered well, however, and he went back to work once fully recovered and took over as the main groundskeeper due to his father being unfit to serve.

While the incident was burned, literally and figuratively, into him, Dorian had returned much the same. Though he begrudges the fact that he did not have his father around anymore, he continues to be a loyal servant in the palace and his interactions with the crown princess continue.

Name: Alix Des Œillets

Age: 38

Title/Position: Baroness of the Western bank of Maritria

e208938c-555e-41c5-9d0d-1b264ed30e61.jpg

Personality:
  • Addictive - A taste for vice permeates the Œillet lineage. In particular Alix, who openly indulges in things commonly reserved for the ‘lower’ classes. Namely drugs, animal baiting, and drink to excess.
  • Dour - Icy and unhappy, Alix is often miserable to be around when not in her preferred company. Prone to needling and purposefully misinterpreting words to sew dissent.
  • Matriarchal - Having birthed several children and raised even more, Alix has something of a been there, done that attitude regarding younger individuals.
  • Criminal - While supposedly the protector of the river and their line tasked with upholding the law of transport, the realm is broke and money has to come from somewhere. Alix engages with and funds multitudes of criminal activity and treat the law with a great deal of lip service.
  • Provider - Despite a great deal of flaws, Alix sees to her people and ensures that bellies are full and coins continue to flow through her lands by any means. If there is blood to be wrenched from a stone, she’d be the one to do the twisting.
History:

• Inherited the lands of the Western bank some time ago from her Father.

• Lost 2 of her siblings at a young age in a tragic boat sinking, a third was rendered near comatose.

• Made her mark on the world fairly young, managing to bring the Western bank under pseudo Œillet control through a combination of while unsavory, nearly totally non-violent means.

• Retains a significant amount of popularity in her lands, mostly attributed to her ability to maintain a semblance of a status quo.

• Her lineages hold, the ancient castle of Berth, is a derelict. Mostly ruined, Alix and her people live in a series of largish manors, moving between them seasonally north to south.

• Holds a great deal of sway with parties moving illegal goods back and forth across the river, often letting anyone with enough coin or favor to offer her a way through various blockades. As suspected, she keeps elaborate notes on the comings and goings of whoever uses this service.

• Widowed nearly a decade back, Alix maintains a harem of men she perpetually drifts between but has remained unmarried since. This has led to a series of disappointed suitors.

• Has three children
  1. Emeric Des Œillets - 2985B8AD-755C-407F-A9FF-83E3379FFFEF.pngA large man of 20 years, built like a bear, swims like a fish, currently involved in multiple criminal scandals, voracious appetite for life, women, and wealth. Of low traditional intelligence, he is quite cunning and wily, with a mind for numbers and engages in multitudes of criminal enterprises, including loan sharking, whoring, and smuggling.
  2. Rémi Des Œillets - 5EB1CC5C-2F6E-473D-9C6C-BA7452F6F9E8.pngWhile not the bearish, looming figure of his older brother, the 18 year old is built out of iron with strong arms and legs from his years spent swimming and mucking around in rivers and swamps. An expert in fish and wildlife, he is more scientist than ranger, building a large library of his own scientific research on the local wildlife. A penchant for going missing for months at a time to study and live off the land.
  3. Noémie Des Œillets - D8CC612E-A923-41B6-9903-57D3E8B9E3D0.pngThe youngest of the three, 12 years old, Noémie sticks close to her mother, haunting the halls of their manors and studying proficiently under various tutors. A sharp eye for value, she is a skilled antiquarian, even at her young age and enjoys collecting things. Fairly shy, she has still performed more than a few times on stage, displaying her lovely voice, quite comely, taking most of the dark features of her lineage, she is currently being valued and perused by other young men of the lesser noble families.

Interests (Like/Dislike):

- Likes:
• Brewing, fermenting, and growing

• Games of chance, statistics and analysis of odds and probability

• Technology, a fondness for the latest in inventions, innovations, gizmos and gadgets

• Order through the chaos, non-established status quo

• Smoking and stimulants

• Fish, nuts, hunted meat

- Dislikes:
• The Royal family, a general distaste for pomp and circumstance

• Warfare, a distaste for massive scale disruption and stately violence

• Grazing creatures and grains, food for those getting fattened up

• Self righteous individuals

• Things done soley for the sake of tradition

Fears:

• Doctors - A general fear of hospitals, death, dying

• Incapacitation and becoming brain dead

• Harm to her children

• Total warfare

• Lampreys and leeches, blood suckers with those nasty mouths

To the eye of general public opinion - Bright-eyed and perceptive. Graceful and generous. A lady of character fair, her qualities only rivalled by her beauty.

To those of noble court and standing - Charming yet ambitious. Silvery laughter to pull at many a Lord’s heartstrings mirrored by an equally silvery tongue to beguile even the sternest ears.

To an unfortunate few - Under the surface of exquisite porcelain skin, lies a ruthless succubus, cruel to those she deems beneath her and that stands in her way, a manipulative puppetmaster who would use honeyed words and her knowledge of poisons & potions to bend many to her will and bidding.

Defiled Innocence

H

istory.

✿ House de`Valliere had always been counted among the younger Houses of the Rhonne Noble Courts. Founded when the Duchess’ great-grandfather, then a lowly Apothecarist, successfully cured the Plague of Crownsickness that had been scouring the Northern regions of Rhonne. For his feat, the then Monarch of Rhonne granted him the title of Duke and bestowed him ruler of Arrlenstadt, a duchy in the Northwest of Rhonne. The Duchess’ grandfather, together with his ambitious son (Bainholdt - Amiecia’s father) later expanded on the business and together they founded the Rhonne Apothecarist Guild. While the lands of Arrlenstadt are comparatively small, the de`Valliere’s exponential rise to power came from the Apothecarist Guild. In a time when most businesses operated independently, the guild opened its arms to apothecarists all across Rhonne to join under their banner. In doing so, they could now centralise apothecaries all across the country, consolidating the entire supply chain of potions, ointments, salves and other such materia from sourcing of raw materials, research of new elixirs, production and distribution. They are also currently one of the main patrons of the Royal Institute of Apothecary in the capital city.

Much of Rhonne’s prosperity in not just medicines but farming was also due to the Guild’s continued research efforts in maintaining the fertility of the land with their elixirs.

✿Ironically, for all his accomplishments, Duke Bainholdt was said to be rather impotent. Much to his chagrin, he and his wife, Countess Emeline Ivonglass only had one child. A daughter at that. Amiecia.

✿In her early years, Amiecia appeared to take more after her grandfather, in that she was more interested in being an apothecarist than a businesswoman; this deepened Bainholdt’s frustration who’d hoped for a son or at least a child whom he deemed worthy of becoming heir apparent to his business empire. Though very much aware of her father’s vexations, Amiecia had never let it affect her upbringing. She was precocious and intelligent, well-studied and practised in her art of apothecary. But she was also naive and innocent. That was, until a certain ‘incident’ when she was about 23 years of age.

✿Something dark, scandalous and utterly vile would befall House de`Valliere. One that was rooted in Bainholdt’s deep seated frustration at his wife for he blamed her for the lack of what he deemed a worthy heir. Much of what happened was never made public, with lesser details known to a very few, and nigh to none who actually knew what had happened except the de`Vallieres; two out of the three which were now dead. It involved unfaithfulness, a bastard son and the Duke’s attempt of redding himself of his own flesh and blood. But failing. All the public would know is that, essentially the duke’s wife’s health would deteriorate, eventually leading to her passing. This in turn led to the Duke suddenly becoming hysterical, spewing irrationalities and incoherent thoughts, accusing his precious daughter as a taint upon his bloodline as he became bed-ridden, sick in mourning for his wife. He sustained in a state of depravity over two years before eventually passing on, leaving behind Amiecia as the sole heir to the vast business empire.

✿For her part, the new Duchess would quickly grow to the delight of the public eye. From the mourning orphan to the determined heiress. Gaining fame as the guild cured numerous sickness outbreaks throughout the country with affordable elixirs. The bright-eyed, kind and generous duchess rose through the ranks of public opinion and the court with fine business acumen and significant offerings to the ruling class of Rhonne (not just elixirs and medicines, nor even in agriculture, but also in better building materials through advancements in stone binding cement). Through Amiecia’s leadership, the Rhonne Apothecarist Guild thrived in business and technology. The Duchess had become the Darling of Arrlenstadt.

✿With her growing influence, she would become a natural choice for the Queen of Rhonne as a delegate as the Guild had much to offer to the ailing nation: ‘Allow us in and we will share our technology with you’.

✿ ✿ ✿
Opinion of the Queen: Duchess Amiecia affords her the courtesy and respect as is deserving of the Queen’s stature, though a more perceptive individual might mistake the glitter of her eyes on the duchess’ comely face as something more akin to determination and envy.

Interests:
Likes: Botany, alchemy, dyes, potions & poisons, fine cloths, perfumery, underdogs.
Loves: Puppet shows.
Dislikes: Snot driveling toe-kissers (though she is surrounded by them), sour food, pompousness.
Fears: Unbroken mirrors (all the mirrors in her household are cracked), love and losing control.

n

otable NPCs.

Lady Corentin Elderwake The sole survivor of a minor noble family with no heir apparent, she was once lady-in-waiting to Countess Emeline. Ever since the Duke and Countess' passing, Lady Corentin has shifted her focus to aiding the young duchess as the Head Housekeeper of the de`Valliere estate. A stern and astute woman, she is capable of running the de`Valliere empire in the absence of the Duchess (when the latter is called on various duties) with many attributing credit to her for Amiecia's rapid rise to power.

Master Wren Also known as The Duchess' Hand. Not much is known about Wren other than the fact that he had been Amiecia's playmate and man-servant during her childhood years. Said to have been picked off the streets by the Countess herself to serve the de`Valliere household. In recent times, Wren shadows Amiecia wherever she goes, an aloof and enigmatic figure that answers to no one but the Duchess, protecting her with the threat of hidden blades beneath his cloak and answering to her every beck and call.

S

candals & Rumours

✿ While still young, there have been many nasty rumours regarding the Duchess' ethereal beauty. Many kitchenmaids and haughty jealous noblewomen accuse the Duchess of imbibing a concoction made of the blood of virgins to charm men and attain her exceptional allure.

✿ Many nasty scandals surround Master Wren's close presence to the Duchess. From them having an affair to him being a hired assassin who runs around doing her dirty work.

BIO ;;

name: Sacha Girout
age: 24
affiliation: Delegate of Rhonne
position: Son of the Duke of Charente

Likes: Loyalty, bluntness, the ocean breeze, boating, painting, casual parties
Dislikes: Boredom, wasting time, being wrong, too much attention on himself
Fears: Responsibility (Hypengyophobia)
Character Theme: Egotism and responsibility

PERSONALITY ;;

Sacha is someone who fancies himself an enigmatic figure. A permanent smug expression rests on his face, and an air of confidence is felt in each step he takes. With his focuses mostly honed in on passing trends and mirages of vice, those with preconceived notions about the nobility would perceive Sacha as a contemptible human being. Such people haven’t the chance to spend much time with the Son of the Duke of Charente, as those who are acquainted with the young noble recognize his lack of malicious intent in all of his actions.

Sure, he’s known to trick his entourage at every available turn (even one resulting in a poor flute player getting lost at sea for a couple hours, with only a wooden plank keeping them afloat), but his goal was always to push (very rarely literally) others to express other avenues of themselves. And just to entertain him. But most in his circle recognize enough of where he’s coming from to put up with his antics. The pay raises after each incident definitely help!

HISTORY ;;

Born into the Dukedom of Charente as an only child, Sacha’s upbringing, for nobility standards, was average. A minor exception to that would be the age of his parents at his conception. They wed right after his mother’s 18th birthday, and started a family shortly thereafter. They seem happy still, confident that their younger selves knew what they wanted. Outside of that, Sacha’s youth was nothing dramatically notable. Few knew this was completely intentional on the young noble’s part.

Sacha was a wunderkind- gifted in intelligence. Nothing in his studies ever struck him as perplexing or difficult. It was shockingly easy. When he was younger, he realized his overachieving attracted much attention… too much… an overwhelming amount. Before things got too out of hand, he began to intentionally score lower on exams. Not so low that he would flunk out of the academy mind you, simply enough to always exit with respectable but otherwise no exemplary grade. His efforts were aided by the fact his parents, being so young at his conception, had few ideas of how to properly raise him, so often all he had to do was dupe his appointed caretaker to throw them off his trail.

This aptitude for all things scholarly and understanding carried over to the responsibilities of his duchy. His family’s territory spans a major port for Rhonne, giving his duchy a certain level of attention that duchies with geographical disadvantages would never recieve. Being a major port meant trade was key, and strong relations with neighboring and far away territories was key to his duchy’s, and in many ways Rhonne’s, success. At a young age he’d shadow his father in trade meetings to prepare him for his eventual succession.

Shadowing his father gave him his best chance at forming a healthy father-son relationship, and allowed a young Sacha to become well traveled. He’s been to several territories and countries, and been exposed to many cultures. When he got older, he began commissioning music inspired by many of the locations he’d been to, and gathered an entourage of artists to paint the scenes he’d seen in his travels. These travels also cultivated his love for sailing on the high seas, as boat was a popular form of transportation to certain trade-friendly lands. Sacha is known for his extravagant fleet of yachts with orchestral accompaniment. In another life, maybe he could have sat sail on the high seas until his life was returned to the earth.

The tutelage from his father on the family business didn’t just develop his indulgences, they revealed just how brilliant Sacha really is. By the age of 14, he was more than capable of handling even trickier negotiations successfully. A trick the destined-to-be-duke devised was that of a trap. He’d lure prospecting trade partners in, painting himself a portrait of pure incompetence. Once talks begin, he slowly walks these traders off the plank and into the murky blue waters, in spite of his dramatic fear of the baggage that comes with the responsibility of maintaining these sometimes finicky trade routes.

Heeding the Empress’s call to traverse to Maritria was something Sacha struggled not to dwell on. He had wondered exactly why he was one of few individuals singled out for this specific task. How badly did he “mess up” to have been summoned for such an important meeting? After a handful of restless nights on his way to the tiny nation of mountains, he concluded that his dramatic successes in trade was what the Empress noticed about him. Little does he know, Her Highness has always seen through his dullard façade, and sees Sacha for the genius he truly is.

Katrell is undoubtedly a woman in thought. There is always a sea of calculations and considerations festering behind her eyes. Even as a child when playing card games or chess people would find her incredibly
cunning
. But being cunning does not make friends or a reputation on its own. She has always been known to follow through on a promise and does not take them lightly. Katrell’s word is her honor, she holds it close to her heart. No doubt the quickest way out of her favor is to question her honor. Katrell is
devoted
to her causes and to her people. Beyond her respected and cool front there is something dark yet soft lurking within. Katrell is incredibly
insecure
, she is self-destructive to a certain extent. Never getting close enough to get hurt and pushing anyone who tries away.

h

istory

It was the coldest day of the year in Rhonne when Katrell was born. Her mother labored long and hard for a child they hoped would be a son. Katrell was anything but. A fact that has hung over her entire life like a dark cloud. The Countess was a young and frail woman and lived only long enough to give Katrell her name. From her birth Katrell was deficient in her fathers love and care. The Earl would not be seen with the child any longer than strictly necessary. He focused on finding his next wife and getting his true heir. Thus Katrell spent more time than most of noble birth with her nursemaids. She became well acquainted with the staff of the manor and oftentimes mistook them for her family.
Once her father remarried, a beautiful, young, rich woman, Katrell was sent to live with her grandmother. The Dowager was strict and made it quite clear to her all that was expected from her. Katrell in between classes on etiquette and dancing would learn to fence and to hunt. She learnt with great diligence every feminine duty as well as the masculine counterpart. She hoped, prayed that perhaps her excellence would bring her into favor with her father. But it never did, it didn’t matter how much she knew, how many fights she won, nothing would ever be good enough.
At 14 an aunt requiring a companion brought her to court. She attended to her every need and became quite proficient at dressing and attending to a lady. Katrell ingrained herself at court, to the point that when a delegation was to go abroad it was no question to send her to attend to the delegates. It was the eve before they traveled that Katrell’s father visited. There was no celebration or congratulations, just the promise that if she did not find a husband that he had someone who would marry her. By the time the delegation returned she had better be ready to be married.

P

ersonality.

Lily, thrust into maturity at a young age, has always been poised, and professional. While second-born, she was the older sister to several siblings, all of whom she doted upon.

She lacked a childhood, and the concept of fun and games was lost on her. While she’s useless at such activities, especially ones of physical exertion, Lily excels in all things a woman should know; etiquette, penmanship, etc.

She can sometimes come across as quite stern, especially as she gazes longingly towards those who freely express their enjoyment in games and festivities, but her intentions are good, motherly even. While she’s not inherently mean, Lily is happy enough to correct those who put a step out of line.

Loyal to her Princess, Lily has yet to be swayed by others. While there have been attempts to turn her against the royal, they’ve all proved futile. She’s tight-lipped and trusted amongst her circle but if double-crossed, Lily is an enigma not to be trifled with.

While she exuberates confidence to those around her, the fragility of her mental state becomes painfully apparent when in the presence of her family. Used to being the rope in a tug-of-war, conditioned to reply; 'Yes Sir, no Sir, three-bags-full, Sir.' Lily has had much experience with bowing her head to the whims and wishes of her family, one of which has rendered her freedom obsolete.

H

istory.

Lillian often listened to the stories her mother told her as a child; ones of adventure through the countryside, others of a doomed romance that left her on the edge of her seat. She favoured the colourful dreams, holding her hands so close to her bosom out of fear her heart may spill out. It was during these story times, ones that were hushed in the privacy of her chambers, that she learned the truth of her heritage.

Born out of wedlock, an illicit tryst between a foreign prince of great prestige and her mother, a beautiful wife of another man. They both met over tea- and the rest is history. Lillian was born from the fruit of their affair, the resemblance uncanny to her biological father. While she has never met her father, they both exchange letters frequently- secretly.

Growing up in the Euers' household was a test in itself. While she got along with everyone, for the most part, her father made things difficult. She was thrust into early lessons, taught the essentials at an early age and robbing her, essentially, of the friendships she could've made at the tea parties. It wasn't until she had aged that her father found some promise in her looks, not that he hadn't capitalised on her birth by selling her off in an arranged marriage. Situating Lillian in his meetings, having her serve tea and make small talk about her day, had his investors eating out of the palm of his hand.

To escape the stuffy environment, her leisure time was often spent in the presence of her older brother. The duo often rode horses out into the countryside, their day spent going as fast as the wind would allow and their return? Their return often ends up with a lashing. She met a-many-of-friend from her brother, relishing in the stories they'd produce and joining in the hearty laughs and solemn cries. Lily never blamed her brother for her mistreatment. She adored him and once he took over the house as the head, she knew he'd do great things for the businesses.

Thankfully, with her biological father working behind the scenes and creating opportunities, and the interference from her mother, Lillian remained unwed and, promptly, sent off to the palace to become a lady-in-waiting for the young crown Princess. The years spent in service to the Princess have only solidified their friendship and, with the promise to only return home to wed once the crown princess succumbs to her illness, Lilian has made it her very cause to find a cure and end the vicious cycle.

Aloof & ill-humored. In passing, he's one to avoid if one can help it, however difficult it is to avoid his influence. When the air is light, the royal advisor is known by peers to enjoy a nice, pointless chat with his colleagues, but never anything more. When discussion's on, though, it's on & any memory of cordiality between his contemporaries is forgotten. The king once praised his forwardness & allowed him privileges to speak without regard, but he's since lost that unspoken sponsor what with His Majesty's recent inwardness & has grown reserved. When the expectation of him is low, he doesn’t care to take things too seriously & is known to

. When discussion drags on, he takes to either excusing himself or, if not permitted, attempting to lighten the mood to the point where he will be.

He’s not particularly close to any one individual and is mindful of not making this overly apparent. He prefers to keep his distance if ever possible, as the face he presents towards his peers is a bit of a performance for him. As he’s self-aware and dislikes his nature, but finds it difficult to avoid, he prefers to keep to himself. For him, it’s convenient to be regarded kindly and his true nature is not one for which that is easy.

lack of confidence; confidence stems from his sponsor; has roots in his poverty bc he only ever got up in the world as a result of someone else's influence & doesn't believe he could've done it without recognition

While cruel isn’t the best word to use, it comes close. Speaking venomously comes as easily to him as breathing, especially if there’s nothing to be gained from whom he speaks with. He is easily inconvenienced and tends to regard interactions as either useful or not. His face is rest is that of a leather purse, which is to say wrinkly and perpetually set in a frown. He can’t help but always feel rushed and dislikes those who are idle or generally slow, even in useful interactions.

As he is a prodigious cultivator, having swiftly advanced to great stages by comparison of his peers when he was a disciple and taken pride in this, he has yet to mellow out in his pursuit of immortality. He pursues it rather viciously and grows bored idling. Time spent idle is time stolen elsewhere and he’s rather impatient to learn all he can, as soon as he can.

Towards parents, he was an angel, as he’d look after their children during the day and ensure his friends’ safe arrival home come nightfall. Though he did this, it was only to really ensure they didn’t idle or plot amongst themselves. A bully!

02.

psyche

There are few in the Maritrian world of bejeweled crowns and titles who make a point of pulling their own weight. Bethelmy is a young man who counts himself to be a leading figure of this few. As a bear drawn to honey, he is the type to seek an inherent sense of order and structure above else, to which he will gladly brandish his most precious quality. Dedication. A quiet cup he tilts freely, to satiate the beasts of obligation that from boyhood, he was groomed to fulfill without question or complaint. Yet as valuable as it is, this hardly gets him the eyes or love he secretly craves. It doesn't help that at his core, there is a sly cave of bats full of secret judgments and grudges for a certain few that as a creature of integrity, chafes at the back of his mind and calls to finally be voiced. Instead, it finds itself freely suffocating under the weight of picking up all the slack, shouldering both the triumphs and failures of the Maritrian military for the man who'd taken him on as a burden all those years ago.

Honesty is the best policy is the simple yet effective mantra Bethelmy strives to follow, which has so far made him as many friends as enemies. His way with words is tactfully straightforward, often considering the emotions of others as a means of determining how to best say something. In times of crisis, he is a lake of calm decision-making and practical platitudes, and it is where his patience shines the most. Ironically, what Bethel finds little tolerance for is the sight of those failing to uphold or reach their own standards, feeding into that cave of bats he secretly holds without him knowing it. As deft as he is at catching details, awareness of his own attractive qualities has yet to be a fully-developed habit, often singling him out as fun sport for the more loquacious ladies of the court. Despite his level-headedness in crises, Bethel is an utter lost puppy when it comes to places and situations where chaos is baked into the very framework; brothels and taverns are such establishments. Naivety in the field of romance is a given for this reserved Knight, seeing as an oath prevents him from openly pursuing anything or anyone. It is a sheepish blindspot he does everything but acknowledge, and if it were not for his more savvy and salacious brothers-in-arms, he would be swindled of his money every time he visits.

Mild-mannered as he initially may seem, it would be a mistake to assume no temper lies beneath the polished veneer of knighthood. Explosive outbursts are rare enough, saved mostly for locking horns against his Lord Commander. Bethel's anger is the silent type, preferring to simmer as he quickly tries to dissect the cause of his anger inwardly with as much logic as he can muster. If all comes short, then qualms are not given for the recipient at the end of his harsh and honest tongue, and if push comes to shove, at the end of his sword.

03.

history

The Normandy family was always a troubled one. Misfortune clung to their silks and satins like leeches to skin, sucking dry what little their low nobility and distant cousinship to the crown could afford them. Before Bethelmy could truly grasp what it meant to be heir to the Normandy estate, his widow of a father was found guilty of quiet treason, stripped of his titles and position on the royal council and exiled into the far reaches of Maritria, to serve the rest of his days in debtor's prison. Facing a similar fate within the walls of a common orphanage, Bethel was saved by his father's oldest friend: Ser Taddius Jackalson, at the time newly-promoted to Lord Commander of the Kingsguard.

Being taken under such a fierce yet fair man's wing was like finding shelter under the canopy of a tree out in the storm. Taddius was a boisterous son of Maritria's mountainspeople; his love and pride for Bethel rose tall, but the shadows of his strict discipline loomed just as large. As a boy, Beth broke the one cardinal rule he was forbidden from ever breaching; visiting his father. Beth attempted it anyway, on a chance royal tour near the Gnoa-Maritria border. Tagged along by none other than the frail but feisty Princess Ireath, they did not get very far when a band of Gnoan thieves happened upon them. Stopped short of slaying Beth and stealing away Ireath thanks to the cavalry dispatched after them, the boy had his left eye cut by one of the thieves. Instead of receiving proper medical care, Taddius told to leave it alone and to the gods. The wound indeed healed badly, forever blinding Beth in one eye.

As the years passed and the King himself declined tremendously, the man Bethel once knew to be one of the greatest Knights of all three realms slowly lost himself to the ferocity of a few dozen cups of ale every night. Some said it was thanks to a broken heart; the Queen and him had once been lovers, maids whispered. But she had chosen duty, and in doing that duty, death had taken her only hours after the birth of her second child. Led by a head of military constantly clouded by ale, Maritria's military might began to suffer blow after blow. Despite not nowhere near as wildly respected or having among Maritria's nobility and Kingsguard that deep-rooted fidelity that the Lord Commander still manages to retain in contempt of his faults, Bethel found himself growing into the role of faithful custodian as much as he was a fine Knight of the Kingsguard. Carrying the older man to his bed, stationing a guard to watch over him for the night, being his ear to tug while the man ranted drunkenly, acting as the more diplomatic stand-in for Taddius during royal council meetings, navigating the finer details of the court and across the realm in military matters, and most important of all, watching over his cousins---they were, after all, the futures of Maritria, and it was his sworn duty to safeguard that by any means necessary. Unless of course, the apple that Taddius had plucked all those years ago never did fall too far from a father's treacherous tree. Seeds and whispers; a desire to regain what once was so terribly lost, thanks to a withering King's command and the stubborn wiles of an inebriated, ineffective Lord Commander refusing to retire...

psyche

From the moment she was born, Mirea-Marthe could never hold her tongue. Her first night was full of whale cries, unending and sworn by the midwives to be sweet yet grief-stricken, as if even then as a babe she understood that those few minutes spent in her mother's arms would be the last. As the cries babbled and morphed into words, Mirea found an uncanny talent for them---she would point and exclaim, using big words she hadn't the slightest clue the meaning of. Her observations baffled and bemused the swaddle of staff she had that catered to her every whim, for fear that she would burst into tears, which would not bode well with her sour-tempered, grieving father. Wherever there were ears there too Mirea would be, whispering and burning them off with her unending train of thoughts and fancies. Loneliness, it turned out, was never one of them. Always a companion by her side, went the insistence. But not just anyone; for instance, she could not temper with someone too tall. She was a fast walker; their inherent clumsiness would certainly get in the way throughout the day. Nor too short, too short would not do. Except in the case of a jester's performance of course, where all manner of gags could be done to make her laugh herself silly. She and her statue of a perfect elder sister exchange dirty looks almost daily, and harsh words befitting of a strict schoolteacher and her haughty schoolgirl of a student. Distractive and fickle as she may be, underneath the wilful and spoon-fed facade Mirea carries a bleeding heart, especially for those she sees as unfortunates. Her generosity is genuine, and extends far beyond her words; if she could solve all the problems of her nation (that most assume she knows nothing about), Mirea would gladly give up all the baubles and jewels in the world. Except that one, that string of pearl and jade from Rhonne. That one belonged to her mother.

Duty, family, fleetingness, sacrifice

A presumptively docile and kindhearted woman fated to shoulder the Maritrian crown. The Crown Princess is often described with gentle words by the palace folks. Servants say she's reserved and polite, never one to lose her patience even in the face of the most distasteful of words. The royal tutors claim she's diligent and dutiful, her commitment to the throne evident whenever she'd endure hours of lessons to understand the country's predicament. Ultimately, within the castle walls, she's regarded as the picture-perfect princess - if only she wasn't cursed by a mysterious illness that seemed to be chipping at her year by year.

It's for this reason that people's perspective of her becomes distorted the farther they are from the palace. It's no secret that the royal family is disliked by many of the Maritria citizens, and the Crown Princess' condition is but fuel to the fire. Many is under the impression that the Princess is nothing but a liability, an insignificant figure draining what remains of the kingdom's funds in hopes of a cure. The haughtiest of them believe that the least she could do is wed an influential figure of foreign land to secure an alliance and ensure Maritria's independence.

Nevertheless, beyond the walls of mystery, lies a highly intelligent woman full of plots and schemes. She acknowledges that the world has dealt her with nigh-impossible cards yet she maximizes them to the best of her ability. She employs a virtuous character to garner people's affection, loyalty, and pity - all in hopes of furthering her goal of keeping the kingdom standing and their family's legacy running. She's critical and dishonest, underhanded tactics are her most reliable friends - be it manipulating the people around her, resorting to bribery, or pulling strings to eliminate or impede adversaries. Needless to say, the Crown Princess is someone with loose morals and an objective mind, her concern is the kingdom and her family. The rest are either irrelevant or pawns to the game.

Welcome to the Castle Grounds, the web of Her Majesty.

h

istory

The Kingdom of Maritria celebrated the moment the Crown Princess was born into the world. A ray of light in these trying times, a beacon of hope - many had cheered. Yet, it quickly became apparent that the bundle of joy was but a reflection of their ailing country. The King and Queen were despaired when they found out that their daughter was plagued by an illness that nobody even knew of and hopes for cure were little to impossible. The royal physicians gave the child a decade, but the ruling couple remained optimistic. They gave everything they could to this child. The palace funded medical researches, called for foreign doctors, and even employed mages and shamans all in an attempt to heal their beloved daughter. Sadly, none worked.

Thus, when the child had come to an age where she could understand the lingering whispers behind the walls, she approached her parents and asked for a sibling. She told them it was her greatest dream, and the couple shared a look of understanding. Unfortunately, fate has a twisted sense of humor. At the age of thirteen, a little after her sister had joined the world, the Queen breathed her last. Everything happened so abruptly, and the bright family collapsed in on itself as it lost its pillar. The Crown Princess remembered holding her sister's tiny warm body while watching her father sorrowfully caress her mother's cold one. On that fateful day, she lost both of her parents and gained a heavier responsibility.

She found that being a sister was difficult. Perhaps even harder than being the future leader of an entire nation. In the latter, she has plenty of advisers and tutors to ask advises from but when it came to the former, she found herself scratching on empty air. She couldn't ask her father. Her father preferred lamenting in the recluse of his chambers instead of ruling or raising his children. Instead, it was her who prematurely had to take on the roles he abandoned. She did her best to help keep the kingdom afloat, to firmly educate and be a role model for her sister, and fulfill other duties expected of him as long as her body permitted. Of course, the Crown Princess hated her father. Maybe, until now, she still does, and the flames in her heart would rage every time he'd call her to his bedside and promise a long life. She found it all... foolish.

Then again, what help could sentiments bring? In the end, all she could do was accept the unfairness of life and try to trudge against the tides. Steadily, as the Crown Princess grew older and continuously defied the time limit doctors had given, she built herself an intricate web of connections within the palace grounds. Though her body grew weaker and weaker with each passing year, she knew that her presence has expanded beyond her fragile body. The servants are her eyes, the maids are her hands, and the guards are her swords. She isn't afraid to use everything in her disposal to secure the kingdom's future and her family's legacy.

Survival
| “If it means securing my future, then I will do what I must.” If you ever ask Callie what she wants in life, it is simply to live. She had been through a lot since she was but a mere child, it would be a shame if she had died of such a young age after all that, wouldn’t it? She feels that she has a lot to prove, that she isn’t just some child so easily controlled, so easily forgotten. She’s going to live and leave a mark in this world.

There were reasons as to why Roid Einfeld had taken and named her Carallia Adair Einfeld. Although it wasn't apparent in the first six months of her new life as Cara, the child was
ambitious
, he saw that she was a child who could continue the hard work he had placed into leading the family business to where it is today. She was the child that could live up to his legacy. She was a
quick learner
, aside from the fact that she already had a grasp on how to act like a noble, and she found it easy to learn everything else. A feat that has garnered awe from his staff and jealousy from Roid's relatives. She had always been an
observant
child, a trait that did her well as she grew older. Cara is
calculative
, paired with her former trait, it helped with navigating the world of business and politics, especially when she believes that knowledge can be the greatest power you can have over others. Always needing to be two steps ahead as she believed that was how you play the game, willing to sit and wait if she has to. Seemingly
sweet
and
well-mannered
, her outward appearance towards people, a curated persona that she has been maintaining for years now. But that's not to say that Cara wouldn't be
cruel
with her words, she's very much willing if she needs to and even more if left with no choice. She will do anything that she needs to do to keep the life that she has earned, to stay alive.

Taken from her parents at the age of three as payment for their debt. Once she had fully developed her mind, at the hands of her "Master" she had been trained and taught many things. The lessons were harsh and any mistake she made was answered with punishment. At the age of ten, she found an opportunity to escape. With the help of an elderly butler who took pity on her, she ran through the wilderness until she reached Rhonne's borders. She had lived on the streets for about a year, stealing what she could from marketgoers. Money, food, and sometimes even jewelry. She was caught by the Marquis of Gilnaer. He was more alert than the others, and he saw a spark in their short interaction. He made a proposition, become his adoptive daughter, learns how to become nobility, learn the trade of business, and become his daughter and she could live a more comfortable life. Living with the Marquis was interesting. He appointed tutors and lessons. Every day there was a grueling lesson to be learned but there was no punishment for any mistake that she made, only disappointment, which made her want to do better. After a decade of living with the Marquis, Cara had gained a number of academic achievements. Despite that, the rumors of her being an adopted daughter floated around the halls of her school. No one made a peep about it due to being an official member of the Marquis household. She had entered into a scholarly career all the while helping her adoptive father in managing their land and maintaining the border of Rhonne. At the age of twenty-six, the name Carallia Adair Einfeld had been making a name for herself. The genius daughter of Marquis Roid Einfeld, it’s been an ongoing rumor that she was being considered to become an adviser to the Empress. She was one of the chosen people to go to Maritria, Cara’s sole goal is to get the Royal family of the nation to agree to an alliance.
