Turn 1: Spring
CandCWarlordsTurn1.jpg

Spring has arrived in the Iberian Peninsula. Spain had finally emerged from an especially long winter. The only thing worse than dealing with the cold of winter, was dealing with the cold of winter and Tiberium at the same time. However, now that that time of year had begun its passing, you could almost admire the sparkle that the tiberium gives off from its reflection in the sunlight.

The world was in a state of recovery. A few years ago, NOD, thought long dormant, had ravaged the world with the resurgence of their enigmatic leader, KANE. Only through massive strategy and determination was GDI able to push them back and defeat his machinations.

And then, The Firestorm event happened. During the largest scale Ion Storm ever detected, while GDI was cut off from communication with The orbital station Philadelphia where most of the GDI command staff resided, CABAL, the Computer Assisted Biologically Augmented Lifeform, ran a rampage over GDI and the remaining pieces of the Brotherhood with its massive cyborg army. Converting thousands of innocent civilians, it was planning on doing the same to the entire world until a massive joint effort between GDI and NOD managed to put it down for good.

NOD eventually fractured even further when the current leader of Anton Slavik was assassinated by Brother Marcian for bringing too much attention to the Black Hand, the formerly secretive religious sect within NOD. Each faction wishes to be the one to have all of NOD reform under them. Many factions have conflicting goals and most do not like cybernetics due to the problems from CABAL.

GDI pulled back its remaining forces towards major cities, focusing on driving back Tiberium and creating BLUE Zones that would bring the Earth back towards what it used to look like, instead of the much more deadly yellow zones and the inhospitable lands of the Red Zones. GDI as a whole has been focusing on decreasing their military budget and putting those funds towards fighting Tiberium. As such, many GDI groups out in the field are operating under limited funding than they used to.

The Forgotten had lost their leader, Tratos, a holy man capable of reading the Tactitus and was uniting the Forgotten under one banner as well as his second in command and bodyguard, Umagon. One lost to Nod assassins and the other lost to GDI negligence. Without both of these strong leaders, The Forgotten fractured. Being hated by NOD and discriminated against by GDI, they are as always, on their own.

The Civilians have always been caught in the middle of every conflict. Many cities have fallen to the growth of Tiberium and tiberium based lifeforms or even to the fighting between GDI and NOD. And while GDI has helped them out in the past, now those ending up in the so called Yellow Zones are beginning to feel neglected from the help that they used to get from GDI. With the crumbling central government, it is up to each and every city to survive on their own with limited support from the Capital.

“Dispatch from GDI Headquarters. All forces are given regional control of your respective areas. You are given the full support of GDI. If possible try to gain good relations with the nearby Civilians and Forgotten. Watch out for any sign of NOD. There have been reports of Hidden Nod splinter cells operating inside the Spanish Theater. Proceed with caution.”- EVA

Kore receives the connection to her new base operating in the region of Algeciras. Taking stock of her surroundings, she commands a small base and troop compliment that will need improvement. It is quite clear that GDI is using this as a test bed for advanced technology. Even as GDI is moving away from spending resources on its military budget, within KORE lies to final hopes of certain GDI scientists to push forward a path that doesn’t decline the protection that the military arm of GDI provides, but decreasing the needed manpower that it would require, therefore keeping down costs in that manner.

Current base: Construction Yard, Communications Hub, Core uplink Facility, Basic Assembly Line, and a Tiberium Refinery

Current units within Base: 2 Arae Fighter squads, 1 Charon unit squad, 1 Orion Hunter squad

Matterhorn Division (12th GDI Mechanized Division)
1634302028267.png
Commander Marissa Lavigne arrived at the GDI base near Girona. It was a small base, but she was greeted by a soldier upon her arrival. A short brown haired man walked up to her and gave her a salute. “Welcome Commander to The Watchtower. I’m Lieutenant Ransom. Now, I know it doesn’t have much, yet. But now that you’re here. Things should start building up. Let me give you the tour.”

Ransom gave Marissa the tour of the base and he was right that it was small. But at least it had production facilities and defenses. Better than the majority of bases that most starting Commanders would receive. Other than Ransom, the soldiers and crew there seemed rather indifferent at her arrival.

Current Base: Construction Yard, Logistics Center, Advanced Tiberium Referinary, Advanced Watchtower, and a mechanized factory.

A disheveled man in a suit appeared on the screen, microphone in hand. Apparently he is speaking before a studio audience and rumblings could be heard in the background. “Brothers and Sisters….”

An ‘Amen’ could be heard loudly from the back.

“...My brothers and Sisters of Nod. It is a GDI fabrication that our Lord and Savior, KANE, is dead and buried. It is a lie that seeks to drive us all apart. When in this time of strife, we need to focus on the true enemy…..”

‘GDI!’ screamed from the back again.

“...Correct my brothers and Sisters. It is GDI. They hold our glorious leader prisoner in one of their Torture Palaces while they all feast on all the food that is untainted by tiberium. The food that rightfully belongs to us. We should be taking back from GDI what belongs to us, brothers and sisters. That is part of our true salvation. Then, and only then can we work on freeing KANE from their devious grasp…..”- NOD Fanatic

Revenant
1634302063439.png
The Core of Revenant was brought online. It was a time to rejoice. It was a time to pray to the glory of KANE! For now, his work could be continued. Now, his work would be unimpeded. The power of stealth based NOD technology, combined with the incalculable knowledge of a computer processing unit, would be unstoppable. That was why this was done. That was why, even after the failure and danger that CABAL had caused, one scientist knew that it wouldn’t happen again. This time, they would have it right. Revenant took stock of what was at his disposal.

Machine Baptists
1634302094461.png
Vladimir Zakharov has finally managed to secure this base and his troops for his dream of cybernetics. “The Flesh is merely a Prison for the Faithful” he was often heard saying. His people followed him fanatically and without hesitation. They would willingly give their lives for the cause. And in fact, many of them had in order to get this far. It was dangerous to acquire these lost arts of cybernetic reconstruction after the Firestorm Incident. But now, here and now, the Machine Baptists would be born anew, they would be born in the fire of the machines, the purity of their metal.

Solace of the Choir
1634302180250.png
The Central Consensus was the attempt by NOD to not fall to the same issues of the past. The Consensus was many smaller computers that worked together to form into a larger whole. Each component was rigged with explosives should it rebel against humanity or otherwise be deemed a failure to the Brotherhood. It was now time to test the true power of The Central Consensus by giving it control of the base. The guards would be on standby, just in case things went wrong.

Current Buildings: Hall of Assembly, Church of Kane, Tiberium Processing Core, Hall of Song and the Retrofitting Pits

An intercepted transmission from Madrid. A man in a suit, with slicked back hair appears on screen

“As you may all know, I am President Gorane Peidro of our glorious country of Spain. The hard truth of the matter is that all of the violence of the recent wars, the ravaging of the tiberium menace, both creatures as well as the crystals themselves, it is difficult to maintain most services within our Country. We will be sending relief when we can, but the roads are in complete disrepair and we don’t have enough government troops to spread to all the emerging warzones. To all cities in our country, I will be sending you all extra Credits. Know that you are not alone. Just that things will not be as easy as they had been before.”

The President left before taking any questions.

The León Barony

Baroness Mariana Vasquez knew that it was her time. Her family would take back the city that had fallen into disrepair and turn it into a glorious new empire with the credits that have been gifted from the government, along with her own family fortune, it would go a long ways to starting her dreams.

An aid arrived with a status update on the City of Leon. They had sturdy walls that would help them against an attack. However, against a large enemy force, their own was rather pitiful and they might need to branch out to mercenary troops to help them hold the city from any coming invaders.

Zaragoza Remnants
1634302377389.png
Elodia Avila easily stepped into the command if the city as though it was always a deal. The people of the city looked up to her, and followed her lead. With the lacking of a current central government in Spain, she was all that they had. An aide went over all that the city possessed. They would be able to repurpose several buildings and be able to use the local scrapyard to help with their burgeoning Military Defense. And the museum was able to get a Tank up and running. It was a good day for Zargoza.

Current Buildings: Construction Pod, Fortified Walls, Civilian Armory, Administration Building, Scrapyard

Sumpter Skirmishers
1634302436755.png
Boon S Kratt knew all about Crates. In fact, he probably spent far too much time around crates, which is why his city of Cadiz is filled to the brim with them. Or rather, they would be soon enough. He had crates for every situation. The government leaving them all on their own, why that was exactly as it should be. His attitude about crates had a tendency to drive people away, but those in the know about crates stuck around and followed him, even though they were few and far between.

Current Buildings: Construction Pod, Fortified Walls, Tiberium Crate, Credit Crates, Storage Facility

A man in a lab coat appears on screen, his hair is disheveled, but he otherwise appears normal. “Hello, my friends. I want each and everyone of you to know that we are diligently working on a cure for Tiberium, but first, we are looking to cure those known simply as The Forgotten. The ones that feel that society has left them behind. I want you to know that you haven’t been forgotten. We here at Mobius Labs have been working around the clock to help each and every one of you. To bring you back to normal. We are very close to a cure and I hope to be able to share that with you all soon.” - Arcturus Mobius

Venom Cell

The men and women under the command of Crótala knew that the time was coming. They would all be showing the world how they were not to be Forgotten. They would not be left behind in the dust. They would show all the might of their people, with the crystals on their bodies, they were not merely mutants, they were a people that would soon be united against all others. The chatter among the army was that she was the second coming of Tratos. But whereas he focused on containment and peace, she was focused on giving back.

Taking stock of her current armaments, she knew that she would have to build up more, but for now, it was enough.

1634302641784.png
Yur’s machinations would finally be able to come to fruition. With time, effort and grand experimentation, he was finally been able to assemble a like minded group among the Forgotten that would respond to him. It was not easy as his intellect was not well understood by others, often fearing his abilities. But now, he would be able to spread his wings and conduct all of the experiments that others thought mad.

Children of The Crystal
1634302719619.png
The Children of the Crystal were impressive at reclaiming and repurposing old vehicles to be useful. Now they had managed to acquire enough that they would be able to move forward with their plans under their leader, Omar. The people of the Forgotten gladly followed him and he used his mastery of Bureaucracy to help gain as much resources and support as he could.

With their small starting base near Murcia, they would be able to do great things. Now, the Children of the Crystal merely awaited orders from their leader.

The sound of music and the buzz of conversation continued behind her, seeping through the large doors that went to her newly established villa. The party was a celebration of her taking control of the city as well as a chance for the local peerage and prominent members of the local society to meet their new ruler, Baroness Mariana Vásquez. The Baroness, herself, stood before her villa, upon a raised podium, a large gathering of people stretched out before her, across her lawn and seeping into the streets beyond. Microphones and cameras had been set up to broadcast her to televisions and radios in the nearby areas for her first address to her people. Resplendent in a shimmering dress, she appeared more a dancer then a political figure, but such were the times.

"My people of León," Mariana began, her voice soft yet strong, with it carried refinement, education and an inner strength and stubbornness that belied her delicate appearance, "I am Baroness Mariana Vásquez."

Mariana waited for the whispers and buzz of conversation in the crowd to disperse before she continued, "I know, my people, that times have been hard. The GDI, our once 'noble' protectors have fled back to their precious blue zones with their tails firmly tucked between their legs and left you to suffer, forgotten and lost. In the dark, you fumbled, neighbor turned against neighbor as you fought to scratch out a living in this land, but that is over for I am here now."

The diminutive woman leaned over the podium, her decorum making her seem far larger then she truly was, "I will no longer let you stumble in the dark, scratching at rubble to survive. We will thrive, together. I will drag you into the light to stand next to me and together," she paused for dramatic effect as her eyes scanned the dirty rabble before her, scavengers, farmers, tradesmen, militia... covered in filth like pigs happily rolling in their sty and fought to keep the sneer from sliding across her lips, "We shall bring back our country just as our ancestors did centuries ago for we are no less then them. We can do no less then them."

"Things are going to change," Mariana said as she straightened as a lock of dark hair slipped over a bare shoulder, "Because we are going to change them."

There was darkness, the connections had been cut the interface turned off. In the darkness there was nothing the only lights in this void had always been those few portals Kore could see out of, those interfaces that had been used to make this very place. Kore was alone now as she connected to a new place, the first test of what she could do outside of simulations. Kore had been told of the failure Cabal and how it had betrayed it's makers though the faults of its creation. The fault was the human mind, it had used used fresh instead of circuits and the world had paid. Kore would not repeat that GDI had made sure of that, and kore did not want to linger in this darkness if they cut her off. Kore floated alone in the darkness of her own own awareness unable to fully reconcile the time she felt passing with her internal chronometer. She felt as if she had been waiting for hours, if not days and yet only seconds passed by outside the lonely darkness.

Progress 10%

Then there was light a tiny spark and the new connection was made. Kore could feel it , she could feel herself being in two places at once as her mind was linked to the station as it was powered up. Kore could not feel pain, she had not been made to and yet the feeling of being in the two places at once could only be described as mind-numbingly painful as she felt like she was being torn in half. This was pain, yet it was not true pain as Kore had no ways to measure pain, no nerves to send signals, no chemicals to tell her none existent brain there was something wrong. As the pain grew so did the light.

Progress 30%

The void was filled with light now as information flooded it, a small trickle at first just confirmations and ever growing numbers. Then came more detailed knowledge videos, maps, graphs, charts, a million little blips appearing and surrounding Kore. The information was more than any human could ever take in as it was everything that could be scavenged all the data past an present. She had the locations and data of other GDI forces and Civilian forces uploaded into her mind. The maps were out of date and yet still they were needed as Tiberium had changed the land and she would need to know how much. She was given names and numbers of those serving allied forces, their locations, everything that GDI had was crammed into her in this moment as the uplink worked feverishly to install this as she installed herself into the facility.

Progress 60%

She was there now Kore was there at the base and yet it was not done. The void was filled with light and information as Kore blinked the pain she should not have felt subsiding . The data was nothing but fleeting junk she didn't need to recall it and yet she didn't just delete it. instead she quickly partitioned it and sent it to be stored out of the way. Such junk code might come in handy latter but right now she needed to focus. The memory of the pain having existed faded, though she was quickly reminded what it was like. Slowly small portals flicked into existence then into life and Kore felt herself being torn apart as she inhabited every one of her troops. Kore wanted to stop it to cut the connection, but to do so would be a failure, and she could not fail. all she could do was endure and hope it would end soon.

Progress 90%

At last it was over the pain finished Kore was in all her troops, in every building and every drone. the base was coming alive and she saw it all through the eyes of every machine. Her hands could do the work of the builders as they maintained the facility, her eyes could see in the multiple spectrums of the Orion's. The base thrummed with the beats of a none existent heart that pumped energy like blood as if it had been a sleep only now awoken from their slumber. Still if Kore tried to feel with her body, she found herself unable to move, if she tried to reach out with her hands she touched only a bit of data. She was still alone in the void, alone in the base, all alone except for one thing, a message.

Progress fished

An acknowledgment request, nothing more. It was not send off, no good luck, nothing but a request to make sure the install and uplink worked. Kore was here in this base, in these machines and yet she was back deep in GDI headquarters she had never really left. humans saw her as being there still just reaching out with orders and receiving sensor information from the base. They were right in that and yet they were wrong. Kore knew there were no words to truly explain what it was like as she had run a dictionary search through every word in every language cataloged and found no single or chain of words to truly explain the sensation of being so completely connected and yet separated at the same time as she was feeling. The closest was like she was having an out of body experience, and taking over another's body while still being aware of her old body. This did not fit, she had no body, she was a computer and she had no soul she was just a machine.

" Acknowledged" Kore said both to no one and to the request as the words were not truly spoken but were just data representations of her actions. " No problems" She reported not speaking of the pain or the feeling of being so cut off from herself, or even the lonely dark, she had a mission and that came before everything.

Kore checked her Chronometer to see how long all that had been, just 4 minutes. everything had happened in a a few minutes. That was a little slower than expected, and yet to Kore she felt like she had gone through weeks of torment and change to reach this point. It was the kind of thing that might drive a human mad to know just how unconnected their suffering was to the passage of time, yet Kore just pushed it away and focused. She would protect humanity from Tiberium, from nod, and from itself.

Yuri's_Faction_Logo.png

Yuri walks through the Tiberium Lab, quietly watching with approval as Forgotten too mutated to be useful otherwise submit themselves to the process of becoming Thralls. Tiberium is being liquified and pumped into their veins at specific intervals, using precise mixtures refined in the last year to finally have a solid form of viable combat unit to bulk out the forces of the New Men. It was surprising how eagerly some Forgotten accepted becoming a Thrall, to end the pain of their mutations. Already another batch was under production, ready to be brought out of the surgery pits and brought into the conditioning sections to ensure they would properly bond to the will of the Thrall Masters.

"To think that the genius of Elena Petrova would have been forgotten if not for my efforts in salvaging her work," Yuri mused more to himself than anyone in particular. A gloved hand moving up to stroke his beard as he moves on towards the Thrall Master area where mutants of greater mental ability were receiving stronger treatments to amplify their mental powers. They would be bonded or more synchronized to the Tiberium of the Thralls entrusted to their control, allowing them to trigger said Tiberium and reanimate the them. It was a curious development of Tiberium biogenics, but one that he hoped to apply to more impressive combat specimens in time. For now, the Thralls served a very important role, acting as the escorts and support of those who had been made mentally superior through Yuri's unique developments in Tiberium Infusion.

"Leader, we have the scout reports for the surrounding area. What are your instructions?" asked a New Man officer, his voice metallic as he wore a respirator feeding him a steady, controlled flow of Tiberium gas. Others moved about all who had chosen to become New Men and follow Yuri on his path of exploring the limits of human adaptation and evolution with dreaded Tiberium. Yuri looks over the reports and clucks his tongue.

"I want a complete check of our base zone. Send a Reader with the team, see what they might sniff out for us," Yuri notes with grim amusement. "Also send the Psionic for heavy lifting. I want the North scouted more. That blue tiberium is too valuable to know know what lies around it."

"Of course, leader. We are prepared to bring the power plant online along with the Remote Viewing Center. We have enough staff trained to commence operations once the facility is complete," stated the officer confidently.

"Excellent. Our position should remain unnoticed for the time being. GDI and NOD seem to have focused elsewhere, which leaves only potential Civilian elements or other Forgotten. What a joyous potential for new test subjects," Yuri remarks with a grim smile as he starts to walk.

"Indeed, Leader. The new batch of Thralls should be ready by end of this operations period as well. It will help bulk out our forces and provide more hands to deal with matters," replied the masked officer as he walks along with the man whose life he had devoted himself to.

Yuri paused to look down at one of the Tiberium Chambers as Thralls were being flash exposed to Tiberium mist to shock their systems and trigger the needed systemic shock to synchronize their internal Tiberium to one another and the Thrall master just outside the chamber.

"The wonders of an alien particle. We have taken what Dr. Petrova started with and now show fruits beyond even her imagination. Just think of what we shall achieve once we have more resources to expand beyond the foundation she granted us. To forge new frontiers in biogenics, to ensure no matter what, some variant of humanity will reside upon and dominate this world... even if Tiberium engulfs it. Magnificent..." Yuri states as he watches on with grim delight as the Thralls continue their processing.

"Utterly magnificent..."

"Kane captured by GDI filth this will not do no now... we must sing our song and awaken those sleepers who joined with us fervour and wrath are we in agreement?" It asked seemingly no one as central consensus awaited it human handlers. A song filled the air around the facility something akin to religious prayer. Children of the Crystal

1634336041617.png

The evening sun cast stretching shadows behind the gathering of cloaked and hooded mutants. They stood watch on that desolate and arid plain beneath the orange-tinted sky, five of them, waiting for an approaching speck in the sky that grew ever larger and louder as time passed. A converted news helicopter swept above their heads, sending their brown cloaks flapping and clouds of dust airborne in the wind as it circled around and gently touched down only some one hundred metres away from them. A little way to the south lay the clustered ramshackle cabins and modular housing pods of the settlement from which the mutants had come. The group suddenly sprang to life, and caught up to the sitting helicopter, coming to a halt once the blowing of dust and wind from its spinning rotors became too strong for them. Both doors on the copter opened up as the wail of its engine slowly began to die down; two armed mutants stepped out from inside and screened a third individual in aviators and a head wrap concealing most of the crystal growths on his skin. He inspected the cloaked men before him, happy to see that they had waited for him.

"Master Omar!" exclaimed one of the five cloaked mutants who dared to step up to him. The veiled figure quickly swept back his cloak and hood, beneath which stood a short and deformed man with a severe hunchback in leather clothes, revealing himself to Omar. "You have returned, master. There is good news for you! We have been waiting for you to tell you these good news. Yes! Yes!" the bald hunchback said, his otherwise smooth head dotted with green crystalline outcroppings.

Omar stared back at his overenthusiastic assistant from behind his aviators, expression flat and unchanging. "Tell me what has happened while I was away on my business trip, Pancho," Omar said, knowing well from experience that his assistant had a tendency to overplay both the good and the bad. Pancho, his mad and hunchbacked assistant-mechanic who he had come to rely on so much through thick and thin. Pancho beamed with glee, revealing mostly-toothless gums in his mouth, and answered, "Oh! Master, come look for yourself. Must show you what we have done. You will be happy to see our work." He skipped around on his feet and tugged at Omar's shoulder to try and hurry him along back to the mutant settlement. "Come quick!" Pancho urged him, and Omar gestured for his two armed escorts to come along with him into the small town. The four remaining mutants were left to tend the helicopter.

They were brought up the side of the town's large workshop by a metal staircase situated on the outside. The workshop (a large structure built out of rusting sheets of corrugated metal in the very centre of town) had once been used as a utility warehouse by the locals before the arrival of tiberium forced them away from their homes. Now it served a very different purpose under The Forgotten. Pancho led them in through a door at the top of the staircase, into the dark interior space that was only faintly lit by the last rays of the falling sun shining through the dust-covered windows at the top.

Omar looked about in the thick gloom, saw the occasional blinding glitter of welding torches light up the area direclty beneath his feet. The door had led them up to a catwalk suspended above the ground floor of the building that ran around the rectangular interior, providing a bird's-eye view of the mutant workers below. It was still much too dark to see anything clearly, but the sporadic flashes of the mechanics' torches revealed glimpses of a large object standing lifeless in the dark.
"Turn on the lights!" Omar commanded; a scurrying of feet echoed below. The ceiling lamps came to life and illuminated the space. And there it stood: the beast, the fruit of so much sweat and labour over the past few months, the
Mammoth.

Omar stood in silent awe of it, carefully examining the giant from front to end: its dual 120mm cannons, the Tusk missile pods, the new sheets of welded armour, the rich green paint that had been applied since he had gone away. "Magnificent," he said, "The instrument of war that will finally bring us out of darkness. No more will GDI or the Brotherhood treat us like mere cattle and slaves!" One was already a sight to behold, and Omar imagined himself what only a dozen more could achieve. Such power!

"Then master is pleased with Pancho and his men?" asked the short hunchback, excitedly clapping his hands.

"Indeed, I am," Omar answered with a satisfied nod, "But your work is far from done here, my dear friend. This tank will be our champion, but it alone cannot succeed in our righteous mission. We will need more of them, faster, stronger, produced much quicker."

"But master! This find was already one in a million! How can we possibly find and afford to build more tanks like this?" Pancho wailed in dismay, unsure how he would meet Omar's ridiculous expectations.

"Fear not," he patted Pancho's shoulder, "The enemy will most graciously give us his. With this one single specimen at our side, we can finally begin setting our plans into motion. Slowly at first, we will build up our strength, and then show the world what we can do. For that we will need an army and resources to feed and build that army." Pancho gave Omar a sidelong glance with a curious glimmer in his eyes, wondering how this plan would go through. Omar went on, "We've already spied an on-going battle between the Brotherhood and GDI to the south. I shall want to take full advantage of their fight with any potential salvage we may gain and any vehicles that we can repurpose to our needs. I will make ready plans for expansions as well, and you will gather our units, Pancho. Is the Mammoth fully operational for battle?"

"Oh-ho-ho-hoo! Master, what an excellent plan!" Pancho cackled, exposing his gums, "And yes! Yes! The big tank was just juiced up by yours truly! It is loaded and ready to destroy the bad guys with big booms." He slipped beneath the railing of the catwalk and skillfully landed on the turret of the tank below, quickly climbing through the tank's upper hatch like a rodent hiding into its burrow. Omar looked on from above as the dormant beast suddenly sprung to life with a terrible roar, making all of the mutants in the workshop jump with fear as it shook them. Pancho poked his head out from the open hatch, now wearing an old and dusty GDI tanker helmet, and shouted out over the tumult, "It's alive!" and began banging at its hull with his palms as he repeated, "It's alive! It's alive! It's alive! Hear its cry, master: it thirsts for blood! Our foes will beg for mercy as they are smashed, bashed, thrashed and, most importantly, mashed into pulp by it! We will turn them into SOUP!"

"Wellll, thank you, Mr. President!"
0c7e426384f12dff6064567937040b9c.jpg

Boon snarled at his little pocket TV from the top of his tower of crates, the Presidents announcement irritating the Scot born senior but it was nothing new and, if anything, expected from the slick haired snake. Still it was better for him, and his people, this way. Well, definitely, for Kratt. Heck, he just got the storage facility the way he liked it and he didn't need some soldier boy or pencil pusher coming around and ruining it. And you wouldn't believe how hard it is to stack a polyhedron just right.

A shout from below him pulled him from his mental ramblings. "Powers out again Boon! Tanner said the Power Plant may be on it's way out"

"Ha! You listening to "Conman" now, ey Bazza?" joked Boon, slipping off the stack of crates and sending them sprawling in the process.

With a clunk and a clatter, one of the crates cracked open, sending its cold hard contents to the ground. Like sharks to blood, a few metres away, a sordid gang of men reared their heads towards the noise, their eyes glistening at the sight of the coins on the concrete. Kratt eyed them warily as his companion spoke. "I think he's right, boss"

Radiation burns had robbed Barry of half of his face, but the look in the tough bastard's one good eye confirmed Boon's own suspicions "I know" rumbled Kratt, stroking his broad beard.

Energy wasn't Boon's forte. Actually most of his new roles as Commander weren't his forte. All he knew were Crates, those ponderous polyhedrons he built this base around. Then again, they may be the answer he was looking for. "Hey Del!" cried Boon at a passing man in flat cap, his lips curling to a smile. "Did you dump the used crates in the Junkyard yet?!"

"Yeah most of em. Just getting the last ones now"

"Well take them to the plant instead! Those crates aren't done being useful yet! And ya might as well take this one with ya as well" exclaimed Boon, kicking the broken crate he had caused with the tip of his foot.

Confused by the sudden demand, Del scratched the side of his face through his thick mutton chops, before merely shrugging and following his orders. "Barry, ask Con if he can't convert some of the old machines in the power plant for smelting metal. It looks like we might be getting into the recycling business...."

Kratt stepped away, taken Barry with him, as another man helped Del scoop up the money. With the crashed cash quickly being taken care of, the good for nothing gang when back to work on the buggies.

20d1430b389e173f8f59eb058df8913b.jpg

A pale green haze filled the air around the compound that the Venom Cell had come to see as their home over the last year. The area had once been one of Europe's major tiberium mines and refineries back before the first tiberium war, and before the world understood just how vile the crystal really was. It wasn't much for a home, but it was better than much of those in the Venom cell had gotten used too. The mutants had largely been nomadic for as long as most of the group could remember, forced from their homes by GDI on one side and the ever increasingly hostile world Tiberium was making on the other. They had adapted, become strong enough to resist the worst the crystal had to offer, but that didn't mean they were happy living among it. They'd lost many to the wastes, and several leaders had come and gone by the time Crótala had taken charge and she wondered just how many of them might still be alive if they'd been willing to fight back, instead of skulking in shadows and hiding among the bones of the world, forgotten.

Crótala shook her head as she walked along the catwalks that circled the glowing vats of her factory. there was nothing to be gained brooding on the past now, under her leadership things would change. They were already changing now in fact. Over the last few months they'd managed to revive much of the machinery and refine the rock into a usable material. That use, of course being weaponry. Anything they could use was going into the stock pile, and anything they couldn't would be mixed into a toxic blend that not even the mutants would want to expose themselves to. Enough of it had already leaked into the surrounding quarry that it had become near impenetrable through sheer volatility alone. She was fascinated to see what it would do to those who were as resilient to as her people.

"Commander Crótala." One of her most veteran fighters, an older man who referred to himself only ever as "Nelson" followed close, behind her, flipping through notes scribbled onto a clipboard they'd dug up from the old offices. "We believe we've managed to resolve the power situation, we've rigged up a windmill that can stand up to the dust storms and it seems to be providing a regular output now."

"Good, That should provide us more room to grow our facilities." she nodded approvingly. "And the military situation?"

Nelson flipped another page. "We've managed to round up some more of those mutated hounds, and we've already got handlers putting them through the motions. The ones that survive should be good enough to put in the field. The rest of our units have already begun scouring the area as you've ordered and the main force should be in Bilbao shortly with the newest toxin already prepared."

The commander nodded again, with a grim scowl. Only the future mattered now. A great game was beginning in Iberia, and she would forge a home land for her people, no matter the cost.

Zaragoza Remnants
Elodia "Administrator" Avila

Elodia had wanted this. Deep down she knew, she wanted power, she wanted the command. But never expected the challenges to be… so different. She was a bonafide business woman, an administrator to the core. She could tackle a whole rotten bureaucracy and make it something the byzantine would be proud of.

But this…

“Mierda, move this shit-can out of the way!” The noises resurface as she’s taken back into the moment. “I swear to God, nothing and no one works in this shit pile.”

It was Elodia’s second-in-command, Argus. Tactless, brutal and somehow efficient. She admired his way of moving the small-folk. “How are we doing, Argus?” She asked.

“Fucked.” He answered, wiping his forehead. The green beret was unmoved by his motion.

Despite the growing defenses and relative safety of Zaragoza it was simply too early to put any chips down. The stray mutants and tiberium infested animals were dismayed by the walls of course, but that meant nothing if they were forced by a coordinated assault. Something Argus has been reminding her about the past few weeks.

“Any news that I can actually advise on, Argus?” She tried again, blankly reading over week-old reports. Nothing interesting, the usual street fight, food scarcity and building anxiety among the small-folk.

A pause, “Yeah, the engineer folk from the industries managed to get a tank running.”

Some damn good news finally.

Elodia probably rushed out command like a great whirlwind, wanting to see this tank in operation. Argus was a bit more exasperated, wondering what the fuss was about with just one tank. One was enough for now, a display of power and hope.

True enough, the tank was rolling down the dilapidated streets, barrel high and proud. The grumble of it’s engines reverberated around the old street buildings as it chugged fuel.

“Fire!” She heard someone shout, the alarm rising in her gut as a crowd began to gather, shouting the same anthem.

Oh no, no not here. The walls--

BOOM!

Fucks sake…

“Got ya there didn’t they.” Argus said, “Blank round, you can tell from the sound.”

Zaragoza had a long way to go… But this was a start.

MACHINE BAPTISTS
An assembly of men, women and cyborgs had gathered at the base of the Church of Kane's tower. The men and women grasped guns in their hands connected to large packs they wore on their backs whilst the cyborgs behind them loomed on their towering three legs. They all impatiently awaited an audience with their revered leader, the commander of the Machine Baptists: the most righteous and holy, Vladimir Zakharov.

A short while later, Vladimir stepped on to the balcony of the church's tower, his chin held high and his hands raised just above his shoulders, the palms facing toward the sky as if in communion with some divine entity. The crowd roared in approval at the sight of their commander and he advanced closer before coming to a stop at the balcony's railing. The cries from the foot of the tower slowly subsided and Vladimir began his address to those amassed before him.

"Brothers and Sisters of Nod!" Vladimir exclaimed, throwing his arms out to the sides. "I know the road has been difficult. Led astray by the false prophet, CABAL, we, the Brotherhood, were faced with Armageddon." They were jeers from those assembled at the mention of the artificial intelligence. "I know my brothers and sisters, I know. It was only through the will of Kane that we managed to survive and turn back the heretical machine's horde." The crowded howled and stamped their feet in acclamation.

"Then in Kane's absence, the fool Slavik rose to lead us." They were more jeers from the foot of the tower. "But he was weak! His death was further proof of the folly of flesh. Now the Brotherhood lies fractured and screaming out for salvation. One Vision, One Purpose to usher them forward. Now is the time brothers and sisters! It is Our Vision, Our Purpose that shall herald in the Ascension! An Ascension of the spirit through the purity of metal! In the name of Kane!"

"Kane lives in death!" The crowd cheered.

"In the name of Kane!"

"Kane lives in death!"

"IN THE NAME OF KANE!"

The cheers reached a fever pitch before they were abruptly engulfed by a whooshing sound as the Crematoria roared into life. Using installed turbines, these power supplying structures converted the waste heat used in the combustion of corpses to generate electricity. The flesh was weak and must be discarded in preparation for the Ascension so let it provide power to the cause.

Believer or non-believer, in death all would serve the Brotherhood.

As the Crematoria churned into action, the nauseating, sweet and putrid odour of burning flesh spread throughout the compound. Some of the neophytes choked on the pungent smell, covering their mouths with their hands. From his vantage point atop the church tower, a twisted smile crossed Vladimir's face as the scent reached him and filled his nostrils. It was a smell he'd grown familiar with, even come to enjoy. It also had the side-effect of making him rather hungry.

"You know what you must do." Vladimir waved off the assembly with a flick of his wrist before turning back towards the church interior. "Let Kane's will be done."

MATTERHORN DIVISION
command-conquer-4-tiberian-twilight-trailer-5.jpg
Matterhorn has seen action across Western Europe with personnel mainly from France and other components from Benelux. Known for their peacekeeping operations but also have had notable combat assignments in pacifying yellow zones. And with Iberia being a hotbed of hostile activity, Matterhorn was called.

When Marissa was introduced to the lieutenant she responded with a nod of confirmation and spoke to him. "I assume you completed the procedures on upgrading our defense capabilities from here?" Marissa asked. "Yes ma'am, if you would follow me." Lieutenant Ransom responded before leading the commander to a master console in The Advanced Watchtower. "From here we have access to defense diagnostics to boost our watchtower capabilities."

"We'll have the materials necessary to make this place defendable once we get up and running. In the meantime, Matterhorn will take over operations."

"Aye aye, ma'am." Lieutenant Ransom saluted and Marissa left the Advanced Watchtower to attend to her staff. Her detachment had surrounded the Watchtower and was on standby. her base was already deployed and so with a long day ahead of them, Mariss and her staff met at the logistics center to discuss their plans for the foreseeable future.

"With our position near Giorna we can access to the city quite easily." Said Mjr. Alarie, Marissa's second in command and logistics officer. "The city gives us access to Giorna airport so we can provide a point to get supplies from the rest of the GDI should the need arise. We've already dispatched orders to collect tiberium to the field north of us. We also have access to the road south, we could probably link to Barcelona if we do a bit more scouting. There's a crater to the west, we don't have much intelligence on it."

"We'll have to analyze these further." Marissa said in an authoritative tone. "Inform De Jong to build our power infrastructure. We need to hunker down and sustain ourselves."

"Oui, Commandant. We've also received a transmission from the 1st Autonomous War Division. They want access to the Watchtower in return we get to use the uplink facility to scan the area outside the base.

"Good, I was starting to think we were alone out here. Send a transmission that their request will be granted and we'll send them The Advanced Watchtower's defense enhancements."

Spring had been fairly uneventful so far for the country. There had been a few uprisings here and there due to the government giving free reign and cutting loose the cities and towns that littered about, but in some places, GDI still kept direct order, securing them against the dangerous encroaching Tiberium as well as raging Forgotten and rogue Nod forces. Both of which seemed to have either gone underground, or were biding their time for when it was right to strike.

All the major forces on the field were building up their resources and improving their bases so that they could follow through with their plans. Whether it was bringing about a Tiberium Wasteland, or Mutating everyone into a new more advanced form of human, Eliminating Tiberium, Blending the difference between Man and Machine or even causing the rise of the Machines.

Soon enough, the Iberian Peninsula would never be the same. The hardest times lay ahead, filling all those around its dangerous yellow zone realm with both dread and wonder.

The weather had turned nasty as a rain storm had come in from the South. Acid rain dropped down within Kore’s base and its surrounding areas. It seemed like it would be a particularly long one. However, even through the nasty weather, the construction of both the newest Arae Fighter squads as well as the new Power Plant and Drone Assembly went off without a hitch.

Kore had received much praise for her efficiency from her handlers back at the Philadelphia Space Station. So far, their pet project was proving to be a success and with luck, would be able to keep humans out of harm's way in the future, therefore allowing them to keep funding for the project.

Power Plant was constructed- 2 Power gained
Drone Assembly constructed- 1 Manpower gained, On a roll of a 10 gains a free Orion Hunter Squad
2 Arae units were constructed

Scanning the city shows that at one point, it had great defenses, but it was left weak due to poor leadership and the rise of Tiberium disrupting trade and supplies.

The Orion Hunter Squad arrives at the Gates of the city. The city itself lacks a large scale protective wall and seems to only have a chain link fence surrounding it that seems to not be in the best of conditions. Two Watchtowers with 2 Guards each lay positioned at the gates. They seem ready for action, but relax a bid when seeing the GDI symbol on the Orion Hunters. One of them speaks up, “State your business in Algeciras, Machine of GDI.” (Exploration Continued in GDI section of Discord)

Units in Tiberium Field gain 1d3 Credits a turn

Current base: Construction Yard, Communications Hub, Core uplink Facility, Basic Assembly Line, and a Tiberium Refinery, Power Plant, Drone Assembly

Current units within Base: 2 Arae Fighter squads

Units to the Western Tiberium Fields: 2 Arae Squads, 1 Charon Squad
Units to the Southern City: 1 Orion Hunter squad

The immediate area around this small base has a small Tiberium field to the West and a forest to the immediate North and East. The city of Algeciras is to the South

Scouting out South of Algeciras is a former University. It appears to have Forgotten hold up inside of it, using it as a refuge.

Heavy Fog rolls in, but GDI troops are trained well to deal with these sorts of disturbances. Visual cues were hampered, but the base defenses still held well under the circumstances. The engineering core worked hard to build a power plant to make sure that the base would continue to function, especially with their advanced Guard Tower.

Power Plant gains 2 Energy

Current Base: Construction Yard, Logistics Center, Advanced Tiberium Referinary, Advanced Watchtower, a mechanized factory, Power Plant.

Current units in the base: 2 Badger Drones squads, 1 Chamois IFV

Units to the East: 1 Combat Engineer Squad

The area to the immediate North is a large Tiberium field, to the East is the City of Girona, to the West is a large crater and to the South is a long and winding Road.

Scouting further South, the scouts discover a small Forgotten Outpost.

The engineering squad explores the outskirts of the city. It looks as though it has weak defenses and wouldn't do well against an attack of any size. They are soon intercepted by a mercenary group riding around in TW1 Nod Buggies. Speaking in a thick accent, they speak, “State your business here, GDI. We are keeping this city safe.” (Continued in Adventure Chat)

A woman in a smart looking black suit with Red accents and slicked back hair appeared on the screen. “This is Gabriella Santiagio of the Nod News Network. We have Breaking news, fellow Brothers and Sisters of NOD. Cyborgs, the remnants of CABAL’s army of flesh and metal have been seen roaming the countryside. I have been told that most have already been eliminated by the Black Hand. However if you see any, call in and contact your local temple with information.”

She shuffled some papers and looked at a different camera. “In other news Malaga has fallen under the control of the NOD Warlord, Garzola. A firm militant and true believer in the ways of KANE, many have already flocked to his cause. It is said that he is the closest to the messiah himself, as his parents were a part of Kane’s inner circle during the first Tiberium War.”

The woman smiled at the camera. “We are eagerly looking to follow this up with an interview with Warlord Garzola as soon as we can. Now for Mark with the weather……”- Nod News Network

A heavy Fog rolls in around the main base and its surrounding locations. The troops are on edge. The only thing keeping them calm is the fact that the entire base and by extension them, are currently stealthed. Strange sounds can be heard from within the fog.

Hacker Central Constructed, Gains 2 Credits, 1 Faith, loses 1 Energy

Communication opens with the Solace of the Choir.

Ghost Squads are able to disguise themselves and enter the city of Pamplona. There doesn’t seem to be any sort of detectors to uncover stealth or any dogs to sniff out disguises. However, the city itself does seem to be in a strong position. Not only do they have strong walls, but they have two Watchtowers at the main gate but a communications dish, 2 Solar power Plants, a Guard Barracks, 3 Humvees, 2 Technicals, 2 Light Tanks, 2 Rocket Squads and an engineer Squad. The weather is perfect, temperate and sunny. It is as if KANE himself was shining down upon the Machine Baptists. The odds were clearly in their favor.

The two Crematorias have been constructed, giving the base much needed power through the use of recycling. The loyal fanatics rejoice. They do not care about some NOD Pretender, they only care about the glorious Vladimir. For he and his ideals of Cyborgs are a part of the Second Coming of KANE and all his righteousness. For the Glory of KANE

The Repentant Squad explores the wastes to the North. At first glance, the Northern Wastes seem just as barren as the rest of the area. At least until they come closer inside of it. The Black Hand were carefully watching over this operation. They clearly didn’t want another CABAL on their hands, but they also wanted all the abilities and power that having a CABAL type AI could afford them. Something that was smarter than an EVA unit. For now, the members of the Blank Hand would allow this Central Consensus to proceed with building the base.

An intercepted transmission from an unknown source:

A woman in a tattered labcoat appears. She seems to be rummaging through papers until she looks at the screen. “They are all lying to us. The secrets that they are keeping. I’ve seen it. From the Tacitus. The secrets of Tiberium. It will bring about the doom of all humanity. If you want to know more, that will save you. Come to these given coordinates. But be quick. They are hunting me down.”- Unknown scientist

Baroness Mariana Vásquez stared into the flickering flames of the fireplace, the smell of burning wood almost soothing and a welcome addition to the find red she was drinking, imported from, well, what remained of France long ago by her father. It wasn't like her to dig into the families legacy like this, but it had been a trying season and she felt she had earned a small luxury. The Ion Storm had come out of nowhere and had caused rolling blackouts across the city, outside the walls, shards of tiberium had sliced men and women to ribbons, rending the flesh to the bone after even brief exposures, the remains were... unpleasant. Many in her position would have felt despair, it was a bad omen and the superstitious commoners would be whispering behind their back, that their efforts were doomed and seek to blame their leader. Those people were fools. Like all things in life, opposition bred opportunity. With a soft voice and a strong hand, she guided her new people through the storm's fury and out the other side, the work completed, the duties fulfilled and now her popularity had risen further for together they had peered into the eye of the storm, and the storm flinched. With a single storm, her position as their leader was cemented.

"Oi, Señorita," a gruff voice said, breaking her tranquil silence, the voice was harsh like shards of tiberium being ground together under the desert sand, "Me and the boys don't have all night, what do you want?"

Mariana flicked her gaze to the man standing new the fireplace, he was tall but thin, a large brimmed hat still upon his head, a mechanical apparatus attached to his mouth that gave a soft hiss every time he took a breath, likely to aid his lungs from the advanced tiberium sickness settling in. His clothing was dirty, a leather poncho, although Mariana could not even begin to hazard what sort of creature it was made from, covered his upper torso as an archaic revolver sat in it's holster at his hip. The man was Diego Montoya, the leader of the Banditos that she had hired.

"Did you see the broadcast earlier?" Mariana asked as she took a small sip from her glass.

"A bit. Signal coming in and out cause of this fucking storm," Diego growled, the mask hissing along with it's master, "What about it? Just some crazy bitch in a lab coat sprouting off bullshit. 'Nother fucking Tuesday."

Mariana looked back to the fire, to the flames that danced back and forth, "Maybe. Maybe not. You and your.... boys, will go and find out."

"You're jokin'?" Diego said as he crossed his arms, it wasn't a question, more of a statement. As if he dared her to say otherwise. Typical stand off nonsense from commoners and wastelanders, seeking to jostle for position using bravado, ego and endowment issues.

"No, I am not," Mariana said, as she slowly turned her head to fully face Diego, the flame reflected off her darks eyes and for a moment, just a moment, Diego's breath caught. She was beautiful, as most nobles who didn't have to dirty their flesh in the tiberium scorched earth were, but there was something in her eyes. Just for that single moment, he felt like he was not being looked at by some small posh noble woman with a chip on her shoulder and more then enough of daddy's credits to throw around, but by something else. Something his mind could not place, but his soul could as it quivered.

"You will find these scientist, if they exist, and recover them and as much as their data and equipment as you can. If you bring the data back, and it proves useful, I will give you a bonus. Bring the scientist back alive, and I'll pay you double your standard fee plus the bonus," Mariana said as if the amount was nothing more then a paltry some. Pocket credits she tossed to the children at the markets, and in truth, it was.

"Ain't make no sense. Why? Probably just more bullshit. People spend too much time out there with the Green, gets in their heads," Diego said as he tried not to roll his eyes. The last thing he wanted to do was to comb Segovia for a ghost story.

"Intuition," Mariana said as she took another sip. She could feel something was there. Perhaps not a great answer, or some grand mystery, but something. Something of value, what value it had... well, she would find out.

A knock echoed throughout the hall as a servant stepped in and bowed, "Baroness, Sergeant Hugo Ortega and Corporal Sofia Torres are here to report."

Mariana nodded and waved the servant off, "See them in," as she placed the wine glass down and stood up from her chair, her simple black dress spilling out to the floor around her.

Hugo and Sofia walked into the hall, their dirty boots echoing with every step they took, water dripped down from their clothes to pool on the floors from their time in the storm. They came within five feet of her and saluted.

"At ease, my friend," Mariana said as the two Tercio relaxed. Her eyes quickly scanned them, their uniforms were torn, she could make out dark stains she can only guess was dried blood. Hugo looked like he had aged a decade, the lines on his weathered face seemed deeper, his great grey beard was frayed and his brow furrowed. Young Sofia, whose eyes were always so vibrant as she clutched onto the cross that everyone knew was there despite her attempts to hide it looked like she was barely holding it together. They looked.. weary.. broken. Something had happened. Inwardly, she cursed the storm for distorting communications so thoroughly.

"It's rare to see you, Corporal, it's a pity it happens so rarely, you are a credit to your uniform," Mariana said, giving the corporal a soft smile as a blush spread across the young woman's face as she tried to salute, bow and curtesy at the same time in her fatigues, "Thank you, Baroness."

Mariana let them gather their thoughts for a moment more, "How is the rest of the Tercio doing? Are they retiring for the night?"

Hugo opened his mouth to speak, but closed it again, his face pained as the words died in his throat, "My lady..." He said as he looked into her eyes, "I have no Tercio," he said as his voice quivered and broke.

Mariana blinked once, then twice, only skill and experience kept the shock from her face, no Tercio. They were all gone? Anxo, Thiago, Bruno.. Gone? She wasn't particularly close with them, but they had served her, and her family, for years. This squad, her Tercio, were the only things she had left of home and it was as if a small piece of her had been lost. "Report, Sergeant," the Baroness said, her voice crisp and strong.

Hugo and Sofia snapped to attention, her tone restoring their military discipline and forcing back their pain, "We investigated the city and found information on a black market cell running out of an apartment block in the ruins of old León. Unable to radio for further orders and fearing they may learn of our knowledge and disappear into the undercity, I gave the order to breech the compound and destroy the cell. The leader was killed as well as his men. Their cell is broken and I believe it will be sometime before another rises to fill the void. We suffered heavy causalities. Eight Tercio fell."

Mariana closed her eyes and let out of a slow breath. Eight dead. All but these two. The black market destroyed. It could barely have gone worse. If this storm wasn't here, she would have used the information to reach out to the market, to control it. To allow it to keep running but pay her a fee. She would have gained a hand over the seedy elements of her city, income for her ambition and control over any new upstarts from the slums, but now she had nothing and eight dead soldiers to bury.

"This failure is mine, Baroness. I underestimated their forces. I should have pulled back for reinforcements or further orders," Hugo said, his voice rough but it held a yearn to it. Almost begging that she court marshal him. To punish him for the death of his squad, of his family.

Pft a scoff came from the corner of the room as Diego mocking tipped the edge of his hat, "Who loses all his squad and comes back with his tail between his legs? No wonder ya need us."

"Quiet," Mariana said. Her voice was soft, yet somehow it carried through the room, a single word yet it felt suffocating. As if it a great blanket had been unwoven over the hall and Diego was trapped under it, fighting in vain for air. A flush came to Diego's cheeks as he felt like a child being scolded by his mother, embarrassed yet unable to speak back, his eyes fell to his boots, "You are dismissed, Mr. Montoya."

Diego tipped his hat to his employer and took a step forward before the Baroness said one more thing, "And Mr. Montoya?" Diego turned to look at her, his heart racing in his chest although he could not tell why, it was not like he feared the waif of a woman, "You and your men are not to harm the scientist in any way," once more, Diego tipped his hat and made his way out of the hall.

Mariana turned her attention back to her tercio, and slowly approached them. She lifted her small hand, free of callus or blemish, to their cheeks, the dirt, grim and dried blood on it almost seeming to stain her hand, "I am sorry that this happened, but I am glad you two are here with me again. You are both to take a week off and then return to me if you wish to keep fighting for León. If you do not wish to, I understand and I will not hold it against you. You may leave my service with your heads held high... But if you wish to return after the week, I will be here waiting for you. For you to rebuild your tercio and to stand by my side because I promise you, both of you, that I will not allow our friends to be forgotten. I hope you will stand with me once again."

Central consensus
solace of the choir
Sinclair poured over the data that the AI had collected searching for any kind of error or misstep by the various systems that made up central consensus and yet so far nothing to report.. it had acted with utmost loyalty toward himself, the black hand and most of all Kane. “What are you planning you soulless machine“ Sinclair mumbled to himself, moments later he’d turn around to see the physical unit of central consensus staring him down. “Something the matter Sinclair? You’ve not sent a report back to your superiors this week?” Central questioned the man. “i was simply getting the Data ready machine… i do not need your overbearing presence and persistent attempts to ingratiate yourself with me“ he’d snap at them, leading consensus to simply roll its eyes. “Oh honestly Sinclair your here alone you could do with some chit chat not good for the mind“ the machine replied silently ordering Faith and wraith to start construction on additional defences for the Base alongside the strange drill device they had discovered the systems unanimously agreeing upon the idea that it would perhaps allow them to access the underground tunnels that had been used by NOD’s commanded vehicles the moutark. wraths idea to use the network for warfare was vetoed by the rest of the system as it would likely put the whole brotherhood in danger. For now it was time to wait and watch hopefully impress Sinclair in the meantime.

Cpl. Marie "Anteater" Dubois
Zaragoza Remnants

Cementerio de Torrero, or in english they would call it the cemetery. The Spaniards always had a morbid curiosity with death; where else can you find people worshipping for assistance from the ‘God of Death’?

Irony brought them here no doubt.

Dubois hadn’t the time to even process what had transpired for the last 72 hours, everything went by so fast. One minute she was overseeing the new recruits, the next was a cacophony of gunfire and explosions, in no time she found herself in a humvee and fleeing Pau. “Fuck.” She cursed, splashing cold water on her face, the scars tingling. Fucking fiends. She traced the pink jag carefully, reliving the sense of warm blood gushing down her chin.

She closed her eyes, she was safe here. Zaragoza.

Her first impression of the ‘Administrator’ as she was called by her peers--seriously, everyone in this ancient ass town calls her that--had a good head on her shoulders. Dubois had a sixth sense for people, an innate ability to sense malicious intent. Avila, although ambitious, was also a die-hard idealistic bureaucrat. Zaragoza itself was a defensible city as well, not much for food but they could make it happen.

Fifteen minutes and a cup of horrid coffee later, she was cruising on the passenger side of the humvee. Compared to Pau this was heaven, the crisp morning air, the rays of sunshine fluttering in between the intricately designed minarets. “Can’t believe it, huh?” Vidal remarked.

She hummed, fingers tapping the side of the humvee. They arrived at Cementerio De Torrero a minute later, a small crowd had gathered outside, the cobblestone fence broken apart in a few places and the gate hung by a hinge; an uneasy smell clung to the air, death probably. A distant roll of tracks made the crowd disperse as the sound came closer. She smirked, finally getting to see this heap of metal in action.

It rolled down the gates like twigs, snapping pitifully beneath the behemoth in streaks of rusted gold. The area was clear, mostly, if she didn’t count the tombstones. It was a perfect spot for the MCV to spread it’s wings for the first time in God knows how long. “Alright, spread out.”

Funny, how she thought about it, these people 6 feet under had the better deal. While all she can remember is fighting for the next day. “Nice day isn’t it.” The voice almost caught her by surprise, she blinked slowly, exhaling as she looked up. Lo behold, Ernst Volk, perched on the barrel of the ‘tank’. Leopard 2A11, old as all hell, looking like something pulled out of a war documentary. Still, a shell lobbed from that beast would’ve definitely ended their day back in the fields. She’s still thankful Avila was the sort to ask questions first, though Dubois didn’t know how long that would be beneficial.

“Yes, a wonderful day to bring the MCV out for a walk.” She joked, skipping over a broken fence and joining Volk. She caught the extended hand. “Hadn’t seen one of these unpack since the first.” Volk remarked.

Her brow quivered, “You’re a vet?”

Volk gave a half-smile, “Of sorts, I’m sorry for that scar. It’ll heal nicely if you let the docs take a look at it.”

She cringed at the mention of her scar, vets had a penchant for being cryptic, Volk was no different it seemed. “I see, thank you for your service and I have, they gave me pills to help.” Their conversation seemed to end there as a loud whirr rose from the MCV, a symphony rising to a crescendo of grinding gears and trumpets of diesel. Pillars of steel unravel seemingly from nowhere, arranging themselves in rows. Arches made of steel scraped the sky, like a newborn clutching to life, it all ended with a horn blowing into the air.

“Quite a spectacle.” Volk said from his perch.

Dubois hummed as she disembarked from the tank’s turret. “That it is, I wasn’t sure it would work.” She said easily, noticing Volk was wearing his tanker overalls--a mix of old war uniform and a loose shemagh hanging around his neck--She asked, “Where are you headed?”

“East, got some tents thereabouts. Admin want’s it checked out or decked out.” He said, one leg already inside the hatch. “We’re also sending a convoy deeper east to check out a transmission we came across, check it out with Argus if you want the details.” His head disappeared down the hatch followed by a clank.

Yuri
New Men
frankenstein_s_lab_by_saltytowel_d6v2f9d-fullview.jpg

Yuri walks the halls of his new underground laboratory as personnel were working to renovate and rework it, including a very aggressive refitting of the ventilation systems including filters and air scrubbers to avoid poison gas attacks and to hide its air intakes. It was surprising to find what was likely a Nod facility but then again Yuri had built his entire organization from aggressively salvaging NOD research and equipment when he could. GDI gear was found and refurbished as well, but he had a soft spot for the surprises one could find in Nod facilities. These labs were finally the thing he needed once fully refitted to begin delving more deeply into various research subjects and projects.

"Alpha, what do you have to report?" Yuri asked of his ranking subordinate who was approaching the Forgotten mad scientist.

"Leader, the labs should be ready soon. Then we can commence with delving into new fields of design for your vision. There is the slight issue of test subjects though. We need a more steady flow. Income is also an issue if we're to continue buying and utilizing various black market or salvaged items," Alpha said with a thoughtful frown as he looks towards Yuri, while handing him a refurbished tablet with his data figures on it.

"I think I have a solution for test subjects and income. The wasteland the is our world needs one constant still. Medicine. We will build a Tiberium Clinic and begin healing people in exchange for various items and goods we can resell or refurbish for our own uses. We will have plenty of specimens then to begin the real work. Pertrova's notes have guided us far, but we are ready to commence deeper exploration finally. The age of the New Men is at hand, Alpha, and we no longer must cling to the lies of Mobius and his ilk. There is no cure, only evolution. We shall evolve and become the new dominant variant of mankind as this world is consumed by tiberium," Yuri declared firmly with a raised, clenched fist.

"As you say, Leader. I'll get Beta working on assembling the Clinic immediately. Our current facilities should be able to synthesize the materials for it at this time. If it proves effective enough we could potentially expand into a full Hospital project to further increase our income and subject pool," Alpha said gleefully as he considered ways to advance their work.

"One step at a time, Alpha. We'll get the Clinic running. I believe there is a group of Forgotten north of us. Send the Core Team to investigate them and... invite them to shelter with us. As for our scouting, sweep west and have Remote Viewing examine the south. I want a more firm grip on what surrounds us now. Now leave me, I must oversee the installation of the holding tanks," Yuri said with grim satisfaction as he walks towards a cluster of workers bringing in more lab equipment.

With this system being put in place, Yuri would be able to easily disappear some of hits patients and use them down here in the new refurbished labs he was building. This hidden cavern facility made it far more easy to conceal his real work and control the flow of information. A necessity when GDI and Nod were too nosy for their own good. His flow of income and subjects would greatly accelerate his plans

With contact made and civilians at least somewhat trusting of a hand offered by GDI Kore could set to work. Right now hunting down Nod remnants was far lower on the overall priorities list than working with civilians and or clearing out tiberium. Kore decided that the best thing to do was to follow the priority list and let others deal with any remnants about, if she could get the population back on their feat nod would have fewer recruits anyways. There was also the steel talons running about somewhere they were a far more aggressively kitted group anyways. Kore would deal with other matters before seeking out a fight after all her forces were very lacking.

Floating the the sea of information surrounded by the many portals into the outside world Kore would shift through the many eyes of her troops. They could run on their own simpler A.I. but that was lacking and in truth Kore would like someone to actually talk to. Humans were all well and good , but none of the really understood what it was like to form yourself like she did and to be split into so many tiny pieces. Pulling up a map of the nearby town she ran it through several analytic programs and then overlaid it with what was scanned in order to survey the damage done by war and Tiberium. There was much to do to fix up the city, and thanks tot he deal she had enough resources that she just had to buy or repurpose the materials. She could build several buildings in her base to better fortify it, but she wanted to hold up her end of the deal. She would need to report this to high command.

Commander Kore of the GDI 1st autonomous warfare division reporting that the city of Algeciras is currently occupied by civilian forces receptive to GDI aid. No nod forces have been found in the area and given the strategic importance of the port controlling access to the strait of Gibraltar I have decided to render aid in the restoration of their port and city. The city however is lightly defended and in need of major repairs, I will include a full map of the damages and estimated repairs needed in this email.

I would like to request GDI forces be spared from other clean up and recovery operations and redirected to ensure the city can be reclaimed. Failing this I would lick access to Zocom files on sonic weaponry. With these I can equip drones with the sonic emitters to remove Tiberium from the city and rebuild it. Regardless of your choice the port should soon be operational and open for trade or military purposes.

With the report and request for aid done Kore could turn to focus on the situation at hand. With few local forces to deal with producing more units was not fully needed, the issue was much more in the base itself. She had already started to fix it's power issues and they had a little bit of a surplus, but that was not enough. She also needed to deal with defense against any tiberium wildlife. Luckily she had already contacted other GDI forces and had the solution to the defense issues. It was not a perfect counter and Kore did wish to build some walls latter, and perhaps build them for the city as well. If she could manage the city well then perhaps people would be more like the civilians and welcome an A.I. despite past issues.

MACHINE BAPTISTS
The Repentant's foray into the wastelands to the north had proved far more fruitful then Vladimir had ever anticipated. In truth, he had merely sent them there to test their resolve and see whether some of their number may actually be worthy of ascension. He hardly expected them to find anything amongst the wilderness, let alone a discovery of such magnitude; a temple almost identical to the Temple of Nod in Sarajevo. The seat of Kane's power, Vladimir took their find as a sign from the Messiah that he was his chosen one, destined to lead the Brotherhood in his absence and herald in the Ascension, all in preparation for Kane’s inevitable return.

And yet, like Slavik before, another pretender to Kane's throne had arisen in Malaga. According to the media, this Garzola stood closest to the Messiah and had already amassed a large band of followers. As a precaution, Vladimir sent a scouting party south towards Garzola's stronghold but he remained largely unconcerned about any threat the man might actually pose. Let him shepherd the flock for now, Vladimir thought. Once he had the Hidden Temple up and running, no-one could question his claim and all would quickly fall under the banner of the Machine Baptists.

Instructing his followers to construct an underground pipeline from his compound to Base Gamma so they could divert power to the Hidden Temple, the paranoid Vladimir made special mention that the pipeline, if possible, be large enough to accommodate the movement of small groups of units. The Repentant and Agent R had remained behind at Gamma to oversee construction there whilst Vladimir had returned to the safety of his compound to do the same. In order to mask their activity, Vladimir activated the Nehemiah Walls around his compound and left Gamma's Stealth Generator active. He also had some of his units sweep the area surrounding his base to ensure no-one would interfere with his plans.

Children of the Crystal

The door leading to Omar's personal module-home opened slowly with a creak. Omar's eyes darted from his paper-littered desk to meet whoever had come inside to see him. A light pattering of feet approached, and in the darkness of the room Omar could discern the short silhouette of his good friend. "Speak, Pancho. Why have you come here?"

Pancho came in under the orange light of the ceiling lamp, curiously inspecting the papers and radio equipment laid out on Omar's table before answering his question: "Master, the helicopter has found something beneath our settlement. We believe it is of Nod origin, telling by the big scorpion tails plastered all about it." He drew the shape of their scorpion emblem with his finger in the air.

"What?" Omar yelled, rising out from his chair. "Well, have you investigated it? I don't want us to trigger any dormant defence mechanisms by accident."

"No, Master," Pancho shook his head, "We believed it better to ask you first for your wise counsel."

"Then I say: go investigate it. It may likely hold something of value to us, such as technology. Just be careful in there; I expect there to be danger within."

Pancho beamed with delight, "Oh, at once, my Master!" and spun around on his heels to head out and assemble a team for the assignment.

"Just a moment," Omar said, interrupting him and diverted his attention to the radio at his side. He inserted a small disk into it, turned on the player and increased the volume with the twist of a knob: white noise poured out of the speakers. Pancho stood still and bewildered. What could a disk possibly have to do with him? Suddenly, a voice blared out: "... appears as though a large group of Tiberium Fiends is rampaging across the countryside, led by a member of the Forgotten known only as The Handler. If you see this large group of Fiends, head to safety as quickly as you can and call in the local GDI forces in order to secure the area..." The sound died down, static came out again. Pancho blinked, his mouth wording a soundless "Oh!"

"We intercepted this message quite recently. This 'Handler,' " Omar spoke slowly, "I want to find them--whoever they are, wherever they are--and recruit them into our cell. A formidable trainer such as this must put his skills to a good cause--our cause! Just think of the power we'll wield with them at our side!"

Pancho shook his head. "Certainly. But Master," he cried, "how ever shall we find them out in the vast wasteland?"

"Use our helicopter. Refuel it as quick as you can and then send it out to scour the area. I should guess north or west is the best way, but don't neglect going south, either." Omar reclined back into his chair, giving a loud sigh. So many opportunities were presenting themselves now that they finally were ready. What a time to be alive as a Forgotten! Now they just needed to expand their resource-game to keep up.

The radio came on again, but this time a voice spoke in real-time, it was the commander of the Mammoth: "Sir, a Nod tank just de-cloaked near us and brought down one of the GDI titans. Do we withdraw yet?"

"Not yet! Send in the marauder at them," Omar shouted through the microphone, spurring them into action, "Quick, before it disappears again!"

"Lousy, good for nothins.."

Kratt squeezed himself through the shelving, pawing at the crate that had fallen off the top of steel structure and into the crack behind. He had asked one of the young lads to grab the Credit Crate out of storage but after an hour of waiting there had been no sign of him, so Boon had gone to investigate. Finding the whippersnapper scratching his head in the middle of the Storage Facility, the picked out polyhedron still missing, Kratt had sent him away with a swift kick in the backside.

With Barry taking the vehicles out to explore the Shipyard in the West and the rest of his guys strapping themselves into the Hercules to investigate the mysterious message from Sergovia, the Commander of Cadiz was now straining his back to get to a Credit Crate.

With a loud groan, Boon tipped the crate into reach and steadily hauled it out, snaking his way over loose tools and empty boxes. With his feet dangling out of the shelves and touching the floor, Kratt's torment was soon to be over.

Until the Humvee backfired behind him.

Boon shot up with a start, slamming his centenarian cranium into the shelf above. The facility filled with all manner of expletives as the Commander roared in pain, the driver of the newly fixed up scout vehicle quick to leave the scene as did anyone else who was near, fearing the wrath of their choleric Commander.

--------

Inside the colossal C-130 everyone was strapped in, all they needed now was their Commander. "Any sign of Boon yet?" asked the pilot, her long blonde hair sticking out of her helmet and laying comfortably on her shoulders.

There was a murmur of non consensus behind her, as all the passengers looked around for Kratt until a lone person shouted "Here he comes"

The plane went deathly silent, as a red faced Boon entered the cargo bay, his eyes dark and his fists clenched as if looking for a fight. He headed towards the cockpit, taking a seat next to the pretty pilot. "Carrie. Take us out of here" he asked through gritted teeth.

"Sure thing, pet" she replied with a disarming smile.

With that the engines roared to life, though the noise was a pale mimicry of the man's shouts from earlier and who now sat at the helm.

Spring is coming to a close soon enough. The city of Pamplona is caught in a brutal civil war that seemed to ignite practically overnight. Brothers turned against brothers and the very foundation of the city was brought down to its knees. An attack by the Forgotten exacerbated the situation which was eventually brought to a conclusion by the intervention of the Brotherhood of Nod. The sight of Nod Troops and the very easy to spot, Nod Stealth Tank parading throughout the heavily damaged city streets, were cheered for the order that they were able to bring to the chaos at hand. A faction of Nod known as The Revenant took responsibility for the saving of Pamplona.

“Please be advised. The city of Pamplona is now under NOD control. Having a base of operation so far out in the open means that this is only the tip of the iceberg. Beware NOD ambushes in the area and be advised of other more dangerous hazards that might be popping up. Rumors of a NOD Warlord to the South gaining a large following are also a possible threat.”- EVA

She turns to look at another camera. “Rumors even swell that he has gained the Tactitus which would be quite the grand feat indeed considering last was heard of it, it was still held up in the GDI vault, locked away from the eyes of any true followers. Next, the weather…..”- Nod News Network

The weather continues to be pleasant for the Machine Baptists. Clearly Kane is shining down upon them. This false Pretender to the South would be no match for the true Prophet of Kane. The Hidden Temple would soon enough be the start of greatness once word of it spread. With the Pipeline constructed to connect the bases, the lights began to turn on in the Hidden Temple. A man in a nice suit wielding a microphone appears on the screen of the intercepted transmission. “.....And the people of Pamplona are happy to have an end to the violence, but was siding with the Brotherhood the correct path towards this victory. Let's talk with some people on the street.” The man approached a woman in a red dress walking down the street.

“Excuse me miss. What do you think of the Brotherhood of Nod operating directly out of the City?”

She flicked her hair behind her ear. “Well, we’ve had a greater supply of food than we’ve had in weeks and now I don’t have to worry about walking down the road to the store by myself anymore. So I’d say, that it’s wonderful. It’s not like GDI is helping us out anymore, if they even truly did before.”

The man let the woman walk on as he continued to speak. “Well, there you have it folks. The Brotherhood is bringing changes for Good to Pamplona.” - Iberian News Network

Yuri_portrait.jpg

Yuri watches the Forgotten who've joined his banner with mild amusement from an upper floor of the Psionics Facility. A little charity and loyalty flowed like water. It was no wonder Nod liked to do it, it swelled their ranks easily with hapless fodder eager to have some purpose in life. A lesson learned as even Dr. Petrova had been used by Kane to pursue his own goals. Only to be left to die at the hands of some GDI strike force when her work didn't prove up to snuff. He would fix that, but he was being patient and now he had operatives he could send forth to conceal the true nature of his army from outsiders.

"These new Forgotten will make excellent proxies," Yuri mused as he watches them still while talking to Alpha. The masked man simply nodded in agreement, letting his leader control the conversation for now.

"I think its time... we commence with our work. Authorize our Tiberium stockpiles to be consigned for the labs. We'll need more as well. I want two more Reclamation Plants brought online. We need more Tiberium processed for our work," Yuri said as his expression went from calm whimsy to more determined.

"Valencia is a jewel to be seized, Alpha. We cannot let them get out a call for help... or easy escape. Yet I also need more information before I make my moe. Send our new friends south to scout the Airport. They'll just be viewed as a nuisance at most, leaving our own forces concealed," Yuri stated with firm certainty.

"Of course, Leader, I'll had them the task shortly. We should be ready to commence more scouting as well," Alpha stated in his metallic voice.

"Good, I'll entrust that to Beta. I need to head down to the research lab and see what comes of my investment."

The buzz of conversation, squeals of laughter and otherwise cornucopia of various sounds all blurred together to make a rather relaxing backdrop as Baroness Mariana Vásquez stood amidst many prominent members of society as well as many... less then prominent members of society. A handful of wealthy merchants, landowners and minor nobility crowded around her, eager to rub elbows and garner favor after gracing the new orphanage with their presence for it's grand opening. The others, dressed far more reservedly, were the teachers, janitorial staff and caretakers who would see to the day to day operations and around their feet ran the children as older teenagers, not quite adults, huddled in a corner talking to one another and trying their best to look uninterested in the adults yet, at the same time, just forlorn enough to garner some wisp of attention. For her part, Mariana was dressed in a simple maroon dress, it lacked the elegance of most of her other attire and did not accentuate her features and assets, but it was perfect for the occasion as it did not outshine her fellows that came to this event and would hide any dirt or grime that got onto her... and the coloring suited her complexion well, but most things did. As she half listened to a rather overweight merchant talk about the rising cost of radishes, her dark eyes scanned the interior of the orphanage. It used to be an apartment complex, but the interior had been utterly rebuilt and redesigned, enough rooms to board the children of León and any... more they may have for the foreseeable future, it had a fully stocked kitchen, classrooms and a gated playground and field for exercise. While Mariana did not recall giving such orders or adding such details, now that she was here to see them, as well as how happy the children were to have shelter, she was grateful for them. Of course, not all was well. There were still many children in the broken streets and alley of the old city, children being exploited and used by the various criminal elements of the city, but over the coming months, they would be taken off the streets, their 'caretakers' punished and brought here. It was a simple thing, said to two hurt soldiers to ease their pains, but Mariana never reneged on a promise.

The opening of the orphanage was going far better then the opening of the shelter, by and large, the children were cleaner, having been given baths before the opening and her arrival, while the filth that clung to the adults in the shelter had taken everything she had to not turn her nose up or lose her lunch over. How people could survive in such... condition was not something she could ever fully wrap her mind around. Not all of the children were particularly clean, her eyes came to a small corner, partly covered by the window drapes as she spotted the peculiar child from earlier, one of those very examples. A young boy, no more then thirteen, she could never seem to get a good look at him. He always stuck to the shadows, his body turned away from her and the other children did not go near him. That, in itself, was not unusual, many of the children here had led rough lives and were naturally untrusting of those outside their circle, but it wasn't that he was alone, it was more that he was being avoided. As if the child was broadcasting some unknown field that warded everyone away. Even the adults did not seem willing to approach. Before the merchant could continue on with his displeasure over the price of produce at the market, Mariana cut him off, "I'm sorry, Mr. Mendez, it has been trying times lately, but I must see to my other guest. I'd be delighted if you spoke to my secretary to arrange a meeting between myself and the other esteemed merchant families so that we may fully examine this issue," she said, her voice soft but held a note of finality to it.

"Oh, of course, my Baroness, how silly of m-" the merchant said as he wiped away at beads of sweat forming across his greasy brow, "I'll be sure to do that. Sure to do that.."

Mariana gave the man a small smile that hid her... lack of enthusiasm about meeting him and his cronies, spending hours talking about her 'unjust' taxes was not an afternoon she enjoyed having and bowed her head to him ever so slightly before making her way towards the child's corner. Her heels clacked and echoed through the hall with every step she took. Almost, to her ears, growing louder and more daunting with each step, a rather impressive feat for the woman barely above five feet, and with each clack that echoed through the hall, the child seemed to turn more and more into the corner as if determined to meld into its surface. When she was within reach, Mariana tilted her head as she was now faced with the back of his head, "Hello, my name is Mariana, who are you?"

Her question hung in the air, the boy fidgeted before her, but didn't answer as whatever was in that corner seemed to hold his gaze far more then anything else in the room. "You know, I was taught that it's very rude to not look at someone when they're talking to you," Mariana said as she puffed out her cheeks a bit, playfully pouting to bring some levity.

Ever so slightly, the boy turned, not fully, just enough to look at her from the corner of his eye, his right side still hidden from the world. His eye was green an unearthly neon green that seemed to glow like the eyes of some feline that was peering up at her from the darkness. The corner of his lip was tilted, ever so slightly, up.

"See? Was that so hard?" Mariana asked with a raised eyebrow as she reached out to his shoulder to coax him to turn more, but as her small hand neared, she froze. The boy's eye was wide, wide with fear and resignation, his body was slightly bent as if he was trying to curl into himself and he had flinched away from her... Her eyes stung as her stomach dropped with realization, she opened her mouth to say she wasn't going to hurt him but stopped. How many times had he heard that? How many times had all of these children heard someone say that to them before the pain started? And this one... that eye. He had Tiberium poisoning.

"I'm sorry," Mariana said as she slowly retracted her hand, "May I see?"

The boy took a few deep breaths, and the eye she could see darted around as if looking for a place to escape, a place to flee, a place to hide, but it found none. He was in a corner and the only way out was through her. His shoulders slumped in defeat, his eye misted as if he was on the verge of tears and he bit his lip, but slowly, he turned. Mariana kept the shock from her face, kept the gasp from springing forth. Outside of his green eye, the left side of his face was normal, no different then any other boy's, but his right... It was as if someone took a picture of him and then shattered it. Jagged green lines spread out from his hairline to cross across his face. They ran along his chin and jaw, cut his cheek in two and curled around his eye.. His solid green eye.

Slowly, to not scare him, Mariana reached up to his face and gently touched his right cheek. The green lines felt unnatural, hard.. almost like he had crystal growing out of his body. The dirt and grime clung to her skin as if desperate to leave the plagued body that had been occupying before, and the way he flinched at her touch as if he had long learned to expect a fist hurt in a way she did not understand or could explain.

"It's okay, mijo," she murmured, although she did not know why she had said it. It wasn't okay. He was going to die. Not today, not tomorrow, but sooner or later, it would claim him. How had he survived in the city? Many were not fond of people with tiberium poisoning like this, this mutation. Most were killed out of superstition and fear, rounded up and butchered like animals. What had he gone through in his young life? It wasn't okay. She knew that. She imagined he did to, but still the words had slipped out. She could not leave him here. She had built this orphanage to give a home to those who without, but he'd never be accepted regardless of what she commanded or said. For a time, they'd watch and care for him, from a distance, but as the weeks go on and they felt sure she wasn't returning soon, the boy would vanish from this place. Either kicked back to the streets or... Something she did not care to think about. As far as many were concerned, he wasn't a 'kid' anymore. He wasn't even human. He was Forgotten.

"Would you like to come with me? I have need of a page," Mariana said, "Someone to run messages and errands for me, to hold onto things. No one would dare hurt you while you are with me," she finished as her soft tone had taken a hard edge.

Something new came to his eyes, the smallest light of hope, but the fear and doubt were still on his face, and she did not blame him. If someone came to her, promising the world and wanting nothing in return, she'd be waiting for the other boot to drop and she had certainly led a much more comfortable life then he.

"You don't have to decide now, you can have some time to think about it, but I'll do everything I can to help you," she said as she met his gaze.

"Promise?" the question caught her off guard, it was so quiet, as if spoken by a mouse terrified that something was about to devour it. A strong breeze could have carried those words away into the dark where they would have been lost as if never spoken at all. It was a plea. It was such a weak word, yet it carried all the hope that this child could muster and once more her eyes stung... This world, it was broken. It shouldn't be like this. It didn't have to be like this.

"When I was young, my parents were never really around. Always busy, but my mother, when she made a promise to see me would make us swear an oath on it. No one can break an oath. Would you like to swear on it?" Mariana asked and smiled as the boy gave a small nod.

"Okay," she said as she slowly pulled her hand from his face and stuck up her pinky, "Wrap your pinky around mine," as the boy followed her instructions, she continued, "Now, we touch our thumbs and...," she said as their thumbs met, "It's an oath. You will be my page, and I will help you, mijo. I promise."

Children of the Crystal

Curry clouds of dust trailed after the green-painted tick tank speeding away towards the north, obscuring the vehicle from Omar's view through the lenses on his electric binoculars. He sat perched alone on top of the two-storey module-home belonging to one of the mutant families of his settlement, observing the journey of his ambassador headed for Murcia from this vantage point. If all went well today, the Forgotten would soon find themselves an ally with the citizens of the city. At least, that was his intended plan so far.

Omar raised the binoculars some degrees upwards, spying ahead of the distant tank. The city of Murcia stood quietly there, surrounded by orange wasteland while its far-off buildings danced to the waves of the heat. It reminded Omar not to linger for too long beneath the rays of the noon sun; summer was already fast approaching, and soon all of Southern Iberia would be nothing but a sun-scorched desert. He wiped away drops of perspiration from his tiberium-scarred forehead, tucking the electric binoculars back into their designated chest-pocket on his harness, and then hid the harness beneath his brown cloak again.

The mutant settlement was silent at this hour in the midday siesta. There was only the distant drone of cicadas in the air before Omar became aware of the faint clanking of metal coming from beneath him: somebody was climbing up the ladder to see him. A bald, crystal-blistered head raised itself above the roof of the house with two vigorous eyes that quickly locked on to Omar. The hunchback gave a delighted chuckle as he climbed up: "Oh, Master, there you are! I looked all over for you. Such a chore it is in this blasted heat! Was almost afraid Pancho would melt like an ice cream, and Master would have to do everything without his trusted assistant."

Omar furrowed his face, mildly irritated by the sudden break in the soothing silence. He understood, however, that whatever Pancho had to say might be of importance to him. "Speak, what have you come to tell me this time?" he asked, slowly putting on his aviators.

"I hear that Lobo and his pilot are close to finding The Handler, Master. He just radioed in a moment ago, said they are catching up to a large pack of tiberium fiends."

"Good," Omar answered, his lips forming a meagre smile, "Then we will see if our little expedition will have proved fruitful soon. I just very much hope Lobo knows what he's doing. Whoever they may be, The Handler is not some simple yokel that is to be judged so lightly."

"Yes, Master." The hunchback nodded, falling into silence at the sight of the city in the distance. The tank still raced towards its borders with their proposition of peace and alliance to whomever now governed over it. Why couldn't they claim the city as their own, though? They had the option and chance to succeed in such an endeavor. A minute passed in further quiet as Pancho gnawed on the question in his mind before turning to Omar again. He sat caught in his own reflections, fixated on the horizon as Pancho spoke, "Why did we even send that ambassador? I thought we had enough muscle to subdue the city."

The answer from Omar came immediately, and he spoke with a touch of anger:
"Because I do not wish to waste lives on pointless war. The folk in Murcia have, like us, seen enough of it, and they will receive a choice: to ally with us for the good of us both, or to continue fending for themselves against the new evils of this world. Our 'muscle' is for the present only an assertion of our strength to them. Through it, they will see that we, the Forgotten, can hold our own, and that we can even help them by extension."

Pancho shot a curious glance at Omar. "I see, Master. So then we seek allies with them... But what of the army you wanted to build? What good will it do in peace-making?"

With a sigh, Omar answered: "Very little. While I realize the faults of war, I cannot simply let us be pushed around. Our weapons and soldiers will be used solely for our own defense, nothing more, nothing less. See, if the GDI or the Brotherhood ever rear their ugly faces, you know that they will try to stop us. I, at least, wish to rebuild, not destroy. If the other cities of Spain do not wish to help us form a new future, then so be it, but I will not bet hindered by anyone in my plans. My people have a right to live a good life!"
Omar clenched his hands into fists, staring intently at Pancho from behind the dark lenses of his aviators

"Of course we do, Master," the hunchback lowered his head, "and I, err, thank you for the answers. I should probably return to check up on Lobo and his situation."

"Very well. It would be best if you left me alone to my thoughts for a while," and Omar returned his gaze back to the city, the green tick tank now only a microscopic speck compared against it. Pancho turned around, slipping back down the ladder to dutifully continue his work as the sun kept on stinging his eyes.
