Futuristic Combat Tour of the Milky-Way galaxy(open)

Characters
Here
The planet earth, home to the species known as humanity. This species has been through so much in the past 66-million years, from wars to famine, to extinction-level events and many other catastrophes that would have ripped other species and planets apart. Nope, not this species, these species, these humans have survived for so long and why, no other race in the galaxy that has been observing them for as long as they have existed could tell you that. The only thing they do know is that this species is new to the space-faring and has only barely started establishing its own foothold in the galaxy.

But now the galaxy was about to feel what it was like to have humans roaming about the galaxy in a military vessel no-less, some leaders of other races, just couldn't believe the idea that humanity had managed to get this far and survive long enough to be able to become space-faring, others are happy that the humans have finally reached a league of their own in space-travel, the rest of the leaders try and come together to discourage humanity from continuing its endeavor into space by fighting or denying them access to their planets. They thought that if they could starve out the humans then the humans would not have any reason to continue to be in space, oh how very wrong they would eventually turn out to be.

Meanwhile, at spaceport Athena, docking-bay 36-4 the crew of the United Nations Carrier Ship zero-one Invictus was getting the final stragglers of its crew-aboard as they were going to be the first military ship, representing humanity in the stars and the galaxy are preparing to set out on their maiden voyage of the milky-way. All of the crew was excited, some were nervous, others were frightened of what they might find out in the dark reaches of space. But all had a determined mind to see this through and see what life was like on other planets, some were veterans of wars on the planets, others were freshly-trained recruits out of the academy that had never been away from home, let alone their home planet.
"Oh god, this is gonna be such an exciting moment. I can't wait to see what we get to see when we get to our first planet." One of the officers excitedly says to the officer next to him and quickly falls silent as he and the rest of the crew is called to Attention and the captain of the ship walks out onto the deck and everyone, immediately salutes him, to which he gives the order to stop saluting, which they do and return to a position of attention, it was then that he spoke to all of them.

"I am Captain Rangers, you men, and women of this planet, have all been a great opportunity, to become part of the first-ever military endeavor by humanity, in its history among the stars, to patrol and make our presence to the rest of the galaxy be known, now this isn't gonna be easy for most of you because your all used to the gravity of earth, trust me I was too when I first stepped aboard this ship, but I am happy to report that it will get easier, just remember that you are representing humanity aboard this ship, we are humanity upon the stars, so whatever petty crap you have among each other I do not wanna see it aboard this ship, we're here to do a mission and live and work together without any major diplomatic incidents happening. I do not care about your race, where you came from, etc. None of that will have an impact on this ship's mission, do you all understand this? Good! Now, have a safe tour and let's get back to this planet in one piece Hu'ah?! Good! That is all, you're all dismissed!"

As soon as Arkan was dismissed, he looked around. "I'm really doing this..." He thought to himself. Never before had he been to space, nor did he really think this far ahead when he got there, but he was confident. He knew he couldn't let his friends and family back home down. He then followed the rest of the crew for the tour.

Meanwhile, on the Flight deck of the Invictus, deck crew members and officers were going over their assigned aircraft with a fine-tooth comb, they didn't wanna leave anything to chance when it came to battle as they knew one single mistake could cost them an entire battle and most likely get the pilots mad at them, which would be a hell of a way to start the tour. But for now, they were happy to be able to be a part of the first-ever human-led space expedition, even if it was on a military vessel.
Down below in the area allocated to the carrier squadrons, all the commanders were going over the deployment schedule with their pilots before the first hyperspace jump, once the first hyperspace jump was complete, they had been told that they would be sending up four pilots from two squadrons to do a combat patrol of the area before coming in to land again on the carrier. One of those squadrons was a newly established one, never seen combat before but the 50 pilots and over a dozen support crew that made up this squadron, in particular, had been veterans of many earth battles during their time with surface-based air groups, famous ones that everyone in the surface-military had heard of: the fighting 103, the fighting 27, the fighting 137, the fighting 151, the fighting 154, etc. The list went on and on, but they all knew one thing that they were hoping to see some combat action, if not maybe even a little bit of what other cultures perceived of their species as a whole. This squadron was aptly named "Starburst" While the name sounded dull, the pilots of 'the space fighting 165' did not take their squadron name lightly and took to it with pride and honor.
The commander of "Starburst Squadron" which was designated as a Variable Space Strike Fighter Squadron or VFSA if you wanted to boil it down to a military approved acronym, was Commander or Joseph Kalin or CDR. Kalin if you really wanted to get official. His duties as Squadron commander was to maintain the well-being of his pilots as well as the support crew and make sure that everyone was keeping on top of their assigned tasks. This was everyone's first tour aboard a space-faring military vessel and they did not want to screw it up. His co-pilot was probably milling about, doing all the normal things that a co-pilot would do, not that he knew anything about what that was...He himself had always been at the forefront of military aviation, his family came from a long line of military pilots, ones that had survived and saved others from being destroyed during combat because they knew how their planes worked and the limits it could handle before it started affording them mistakes and that was something that he could not afford to have happened with anyone under his command, because in space, no one can hear you scream, no one will know if you go overboard, luckily the UN also had this thought and decided to try and commission magnetic-gravity boots which stuck to the flight deck so that when others were walking along it, or just happened to be stupidly standing behind a catapult jet blast deflector shield when it was lowered down.
"All right gentlemen and ladies listen up, this is the first combat tour, our first deployment in the history of our species in space, now I don't want anyone to be frightened or scared, just remember what we went over earlier and you will be fine out there, Hu'ah let's see who we got here....um, um, um !@#$ it, I have no @#$%ing clue who I wanna have come up with me so I guess it will just have to be....drumroll please and the name of the wingman selected is none other than our very own new squadron member Ensign Arkane Rastel, Ensign, you'd better be ready for this!, Alright then, let's do this right, ready! Who's the best! as a response from the pilots came starbursts the best! who are we gonna defend!? Humanity, sir! Do we ever quit!? Starbursts Don't Quit! Good job, now, ready! Break!"

(sorry about not explaining that earlier. Well basically he is gonna be doing a first flight once hyperspace clears with the commander so go through like a full set of actions, an example would be like your character walks around the craft he has been assigned to checking for any defects and making sure the mechanic assigned to the craft, etc.

Arkane quickly responds, "Understood, Sir!" quickly examines his ship for any defects, making sure nothing is wrong with it, then checks to make sure it is his assigned ship. After a few seconds, he reports, "My ship is perfectly functional and ready for combat, Sir!". It seems as if he trained hard for this day. He may know much about the aircraft, it's capabilities, how it should work and fly, etc.

Joseph just nodded at this and started on a visual inspection of his craft making sure there were no defects, loose wiring, etc. Once that was done he greeted the mechanic that was in charge of his craft.

Geardog: "commander, I am petty officer Jenkins and i am in charge of this space craft, I am pleased to report that this aircraft has no defects, malfunctions, weapon jams, etc. This craft is loaded with 8900 pounds of spacecraft rated fuel, your hook and holdback bar are functional and have no issues that need to be addressed, however your stick might be a little sensitive on the first ride out, gentle stick motions should do the trick on the deck sir! Your seat parachute is packed and ready to go, sir! If your ready, you may board your craft sir and do a pre-start check, sir!"

Once the crewmen was thanked, he walked away and the commander boarded his spacecraft putting his survival pack where he could reach it and started his pre-flight check which ran in order:
1. Battery power switch to on
2. Alternate power unit switch to on
3. Formation lights switch to on
4. Formation lights set to flash
5. Warning and taxi lights set to full
6. On board Fire suppression system test
7. FLCS system test
8. Radio set to Recieve and send
9. Primary radio channel tuned to Squadron frequency of 104.87
10. Tower radio frequency set to 097.71

Once pre-flight was complete he hopped in and started up the aircraft going through the start-up proceedure
1. Right fuel pump tuned to right engine
2. Left fuel pump tuned to left engine
3. Fuel flow set to master
4. JFS Start flipped to left engine start:
20%
40%
3. 50% engine start, throttle pushed off idle and idle switch toggled and throttle pushed to 50%
4. Once engine has leveled out at 60% space, guidance, payload and targeting system switches all flipped to up position
5. JFS start switched to right engine stary and rinse and repeat for right engine.
6. Once both engines are started, fire control system switches flipped into the up position and throttle pulled back down to idle
7. APU switch flipped to the down position
8. Air source check
9. Radar Warning System flipped on
10. Countermeasure system switch flipped on
11. Virtualized Display system (VDS) switched to on
12. Artificial Pilot Assistance (APA) switch turned to on.
13. Left and right weapon pylon stations switched on
14. Tactical Navigation System (TANS) on
15. Virtualized Helmet Mounted Display (VHMD) on

Once the aircraft was fully powered on and everything was ready, the commander looked to his wingman waiting for him to be ready and threw a thumbs up, letting him know he was ready to taxi.

Arkane did the same as his commander did, prepping his aircraft for the taxi as well. As soon as he was ready, he gave a simple thumbs up to the Commander, letting him know he was ready to go.

The commander acknowledged his thumbs and looked over to his left and then his right to check and make sure his formation and taxi lights were functional and that his formation lights were flashing green and red. He then went into his VDS and loaded up the mission flight plan on his spacecraft and flipped his weapon master arm switch from safe to sim and then back again once the word "Sim" appeared on his vhmd and then toggled the nose-wheel steering and armed his powered ejection seat (PES).

He then turned off his parking brake and held the wheel brake while he gave a remove chocks and chains signal to the crewmen who were still waiting to finish up their jobs with the spacecraft and then would move onto the next. They acknowledged with a thumbs up and the crewmen with the blue shirt ducked under the nose to remove the chains first and then the chocks which held the craft in place and appeared once again and gave the commander the signal that the chocks and chains were removed.

Once that was done, the crewmen moved away from the ship and a yellow shirt crewmen stepped in front of the craft and crossed both of his arms over each other like a x with knuckles showing but with thumbs tucked in while they radioed the tower for clearence to taxi.

"Invictus tower - Starburst 101 and 201 ready to taxi."

"Starburst 101,hold position, wait one. Starburst 201 same traffic."
"Starburst 101 you are clear to taxi to catapult 3, position and hold. Starburst 201 clear to taxi to catapult 4 position and hold."

"taxi to catapult 3 position and hold, starburst 101" He said and switched his focus to the yellow shirt crewmen and watched and waited for the hand signals that woild tell him that he was clear to release the brake pedal and throttle up to 5% to taxi to the catapult.

Arkane responds with "Taxi to catapult 4, position and hold, Starburst 201". He goes through the same process as his wingman. While he waits for clearance, he looks back to the other recruits. Suddenly, a sense of worry struck him like thunder. What if he wasn't good enough? What if he lost control and got lost in space? What if he crashed into something? He looked pale for a moment, but then he remembered, he was doing it for his friends and family back home. He can't back down now. He can't let those who need him down. He quickly snapped out of it and awaited clearance.

The yellow shirts on both crafts give the signal and start motioning to start taxing by cupping their hands together and doing hand signals that looked like they were waving their hands away from their faces. The commander then nodded and released his foot from the wheel brake, disengaged his parking brake and throttled up to 5% and let the aircraft move forward as the crewmen stepped backward and still hand-signaling them to taxi forwards.

"Starburst 201, Fly 3 hold the current position for 1 mike while 101 taxi's out of parking space, then you are clear to continue taxi." The crewmen followed up his traffic by crossing his arms again with his fist closed and waited for a minute or so before he uncrossed and continued the taxi-forward hand-signals he had been doing before.

The commander's craft was passed off to another yellow shirt with a pointing signal and a salute before the first yellow shirt walked away and his craft was taken over by another crewman and he just followed the signals until he reached the third catapult on the deck which was designated as CAT-3 and he put his foot on his wheel brake and slowed down his aircraft while throttling down to 2% and adjusting as signaled before getting onto the CAT and zeroing out his throttle, before flipping the switch for his wingtips to fold downwards so that the craft had a complete wing instead of a half-wing before takeoff. He would also flip the switch for his holdback bar to be flipped onto the cat and the green shirt crewmen went to work attaching his craft to the catapult.

Arkane watched the commander's preparations. He knew that he'd best wait for 101's taxi to leave the parking space. He watched and waited for the all clear...

Yellow shirt: "Starburst 201, continue taxi to cat-4"
The yellow shirt then followed up by releasing their hold signal as she gave Arkane the taxi forward hand signal and stepped back giving his aircraft plenty of room to maneuver on the deck and switched it up by pointing her left hand with her two fingers and thumb pushed into her hand to the left and cupping her right hand and moving it back and forth to indicate that he should rudder to the left as he taxied out and then pushed her third thumb into her palm as she passed his aircraft along to the next crewmen and did a quick salute before walking off. The next crewmen showed that he had control by giving Arkane a goalpost-shaped signal and taxied him along to cat-4 whereby the crewmen maneuvering him onto the cat stopped the craft and gave the signal to release his holdback bar before passing him along to the cat-crew.

Arkane releases the holdback bar. As soon as he does, he looks to the Yellow shirt crew member. He had never seen anyone like her. This whole thing was a new experience for him; About to explore space, Joining a squadron, Falling in love... "what else will happen?" he wondered to himself.

"Starburst 101, final flight check, I'm gonna need you to go ahead and tap the brakes and check flaps and stabs."

"Left side, flaps, and Stabs, green light."
"Right side, flaps and staps green light."
"Brakes, green light."

"Initiating HMD Visor."
"HMD Visor software, all green across the board."
"Switching to cannon, cannon spun up and green."
"Switching to SIM's(Space Intercept Missile) now, HMD Tracking, SIM's are green."
"Countermeasure's check."
"Countermeasures Fired, Countermeasure system and weapon system are green."
"All systems green, Starburst 101, is green across the board, no out lights, all systems check out."

"Copy, Starburst 101, full-military power! Standby for launch."
"Full military power, Starburst 101."

The commander then jumped his throttle up to 100 and his craft lurched forward for a second and it looked like his craft was about to break free of the holdback bar, but it was actually doing the opposite, the holdback bar was doing its job of holding back his craft while attached to the catapult and his craft was angling forward enough to be able to launch safely and keep the craft intact. As the seconds passed, everyone on the deck was anxious.

While this was happening the catapult officer was already in the final salute signal and then kneeled putting his arm out to the left with his hand in a gun signal and the other hand behind his back since he had already saluted the officer for takeoff and waited as he watched the launch control box and soon enough the yellow shirt ducked as the craft went from zero to 980 in less than 30 seconds.

"Silver-hornet shot! Cat 3 clear!"
"Copy, that was an epic shot, great job shooter 1"
"Just doing my job."
"All deck personnel be advised, cat-3 is now cleared, cat-4 is still hot-loaded, stand clear of cat-4, shooter 2, do your stuff."
"Shooter 2 copies, stand-by."

"Starburst 102, shooter 2. Final flight check. I'm gonna need you to go ahead and tap the breaks and check flaps and stabs."

Arkane: "Understood."
"Left side, flaps, and Stabs green light."
"Right side, flaps, and Stabs green light."
"Brakes, green light."

"Initiating HMD Visor."
"HMD Visor software, all green across the board."
"Switching to cannon, cannon spun up and green."
"Switching to SIM's... HMD Tracking, SIM's are green."
"Countermeasure's check."
"Countermeasures Fired, Countermeasure system and weapon system are green."
"All systems are green, Starburst 201 is green across the board. No lights out, all systems check out."
