It was time again the return of students for the start of the year. Students had arrived moments before getting seated in their houses while they waited for Professor Black to get the first years ready to be sorted. The rest of the staff all sat at the front table watching over the students with warm smiles and welcoming auras about them. Once the older students were seated and talking amongst themselves Professor Black walked in carrying a stool and familiar hat placing it carefully in front of the long staff table. “Alright First years this way once I call your name you’ll take a seat here to be sorted into your houses.”his voice rang out calmly as the first years began timidly making their way forward lining up. Professor Black watched them all amused then with a clear voice began calling out the names of the students. With each student the hat rang out their house causing applause and cheers to ring out as new students joined the tables. Once all the students had been seated the headmistress stood up a warm smile upon her face. “Welcome back everyone I hope yours summers were well! Now you older students know the rules but I will announce again that the dark forest is closed to all students. You are to be in bed at the appropriate times and students may not roam the halls during the night. Now there’s a few more things we need to address but those shall wait until after the feast!”she called clapping her hands once as food filled the tables and goblets filled with drinks.

Jason “Jace” Asher had to admit that he was excited. Super excited. Sure, he had nearly fallen off the boat earlier, but that was only because Snitch was being a little too feisty. That wasn’t his fault though. Although he recalled a teacher scolding him for his actions, he didn’t mind. It was alright; after all, Harry Potter himself got into trouble too. As long as he didn’t get expelled, Jace didn’t really mind these type of minor scoldings.

Jace was in awe as he walked down the hallway, gawking at the numerous portraits of former headmasters and headmistresses. He could feel the portraits staring at them, a few of them making snide comments about the first years. The boy gave Dumbledore a sheepish wave, partially because it looked like the old man had a kind smile on his face. Also, it was because Dumbledore somewhat looked like his grandfather.

His grandfather had given him some advice for the train ride, but Jace didn’t really have too much success with the train ride. His grandfather had advised for him to seek out the Flying teacher, to perhaps convince them that he could play Quidditch with the older kids. Jace had practically spent the entire train ride searching for the teacher, but to no avail. As a result, he hadn’t really made any first year friends. That was alright though. He could be friends with his future Gryffindor Quidditch teammates. He wasn’t bothered too much by the lack of company right now.

The crowd slowly came to a halt and Professor Black entered the room, carrying a stool and a triangular brown hat. Jace looked at the hat curiously. It was old and torn, but it had a kind smile on its face. Before long, it began to sing its silly little song. The song soon finished. Then, Jace heard Professor Black call his name.

His feet walked to the stool for him, almost as if he was on auto mode. He was excited for sure, a cheesy grin on his face. He was going to be Sorted into the best house ever, Gryffindor. The house of the heroes. The home of the brave. Sitting down on the stool, he felt the hat on the top of his head.

”Jason Asher, eh? I remember your mother, Renetta, eh? You have your mother’s enthusiasm... But you have your father’s ambition.”

Jace nodded at this remark. Even after his father retired from Quidditch, he had still wanted to stay in the industry, so he had founded a Quidditch betting system of some sort, still wanting to bring in the galleons. The business was currently a decent success.

“I think I have the perfect house for you... Slytherin!” The Sorting Hat declared. Jace froze. Slytherin? The hat had to be wrong. He couldn’t be a Slytherin. That wasn’t possible. He wasn’t evil. He didn’t hate muggle-borns. He was brave, kind and caring. Not mean, selfish and rude. Feeling the hat being taken off his head, Jace trudged towards the Slytherin table, a look of disappointment on his face. What would his parents think of him? While his family had a few Slytherins, they were mostly Gryffindors or Hufflepuffs.

The rest of the Sorting Ceremony passed like a blur, partially because Jace was moping about his Sorting result. Why Slytherin? Was this meaning that he was destined to a life of evil? Jace frowned. That didn’t make sense... His Slytherin cousins seemed like fairly nice people.

Hearing the headmistress list the rules, Jace tuned her out, partially because he already knew them. There was a curfew, going to the forbidden forest was forbidden, no sneaking out after dark...

Watching thousands of plates and goblets appear on the table, Jace lost his sad disposition for a moment, staring at them in awe. Looking at the plate in front of him, he grinned as a plate of roast pheasant appeared in front of him. Taking a piece of meat, he didn’t realize how hungry he was until he finished the piece in seconds. It tasted just as good as his father’s roasted pheasant.

Now in a cheery mood, Jace turned to the person sitting next to him.
”Is the Slytherin Quidditch Team good? Is the Seeker position open? When are tryouts?” He asked, between bites, oblivious to the fact that he might overwhelm his neighbor.

Ah, a new school year - another couple of months spent away from family, but with a huge library available instead... Not that the one back at home had a poor selection, of course, but he had already had a chance to go through everything from it at least once in his life, while the one at Hogwarts still held some secrets... As did the castle itself. Not to mention the portraits - the many, many portraits, some of them very old...

... And Artemis only had two more - guaranteed - years left there.

Pity.

The journey this year went as expected - both the one to the station, and then the one by the Hogwarts Express. While he didn't mind almost any kind of company, at least as long as it wasn't acting actively hostile towards him for too long, he was fortunate enough to find a place among a group of Ravenclaws. Or, well, technically he joined a few of them - and then more arrived... Well, that didn't matter.

What did matter was that he got to relax and work on a new set of cards... Just some sketches for the time being - but the beginning was often just as important as the end, since it gave it shape. In this case literally. Of course there was still a lot he needed to do before he could use them, but in the meantime he had other sets to play with.

Soon, the train stopped at the Hogsmeade station, and - one carriage drive later - Artemis found himself back at the castle, slightly sleepy after all those peaceful hours... But not in a bad way. He managed to say hello to a few portraits before he got herded - along with other students - towards his House's table... And then of course came the Sorting Ceremony.

To be honest, he wasn't all that interested in it, since he didn't really know any of the kids taking it - despite recognising some of their surnames, sometimes with a few pieces of information attached... And so he barely paid any attention to the people approaching the Hat and then going to find their place, both literally and figuratively. He did glance at them from time to time, especially when the Hat itself did something interesting - for example, reacted to someone unusually fast or needed a lot of time to decide - but... Other than that, he let his gaze and mind wander.

He had a few things to check out, after all. One, those twins from Hufflepuff; sitting away from each other for a change. Okay. Two, the flying teacher, still at the staff table; the jury had been out on this one for a while, but the twins were enough of an indicator for which dream was currently playing out. The other one had to be the next year. Or... Technically, any year in the future. Three, the... Oh, there was nobody at that seat yet... But just as he thought that, a freshly sorted girl sat down among their fellow Ravenclaws, and yes, that was the one, right where she was supposed to be. All right. Four...

That went on for a while.

Finally, the headmistress stood up to give a speech - and that got Artemis' attention. Not that he was expecting a sudden surprise in the form of some unexpected and important information, but... It was good to listen to her, just in case. That, and it seemed polite.

He was very selective with his politeness.

The Forbidden Forest, then a reminder not to leave the House areas at night... Standard stuff, really, though Artemis couldn't help but notice that there was no specific hour given to the new student for that last one. Personally, he had his own ideas about appropriate times, despite knowing that the teachers wouldn't agree with those... Well, most of them, anyway... But oh well. The kids would learn, one way or another.

The speech turned out to be short this year - and the moment it ended, the food appeared on the tables. Artemis immediately knew where to look, and so his head moved before it even happened; the new girl - the number three on his list - jumped in her seat, probably surprised by the display of magic, and accidentally pushed a plate off the table, with her neighbour managing to catch it at the last moment...

All was well in the world.

Satisfied and smiling slightly, Artemis focused on his meal, though that did not stop him from still glancing around from time to time, lazily, with no real purpose now that he had already confirmed everything he needed... For the Great Feast, that was.

Welp, it's that season again, Anetta thought upon seeing the crowd already gathering in the Great Hall. She took a seat at the Hufflepuff table with a peace of mind, knowing that her tuxedo cat, Aiiro, had been well-fed and now sleeping in her dorm room. Who knows when that little rascal gonna have his nightly dose of zoomies, though.

From her seat, she could see first-years standing there in front of the professors, waiting to be sorted. It sure reminded Anetta of that one time when she gave the Sorting Hat a hard time to decide whether she belonged to Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. Why? Because it thought that both Helga and Rowena would've gladly welcomed her in their houses. Only after about 3 minutes later did the Sorting Hat ask, "What do you think of flowers and plants?" to which Anetta reminisced of all the time spent gardening in her grandparents' greenhouse (albeit a muggle-style one). That's why she somehow ended up in Hufflepuff up until now.

And then the feast began after both the sorting ceremony and the headmistress' speech had concluded. Loads and loads of food appeared on the tables and they all looked so dang tasty to the point that the hungry Anetta wanted to wolf them all down. But then again, they're supposed to be for everyone. Still no sashimi, so she had to settle with roast beef, mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, and gravy. "Itadakimasu," Anetta whispered to no one before enjoying her meal. She would've said that louder if this were in Japan. But hey, it's Scotland. Some Japanese habits would be weird if done publicly here.

Luka ~ Gryffindor

"Are you fuc...” Luka trailed off as he noticed a group of first years hustling passed him, their eyes wide and shiny staring up at his face and he caught himself just in time. “Fickle... fish...” He cleared his throat awkwardly as they hurried past him, following instructions from the faculty. Luka let out a quick sigh in relief, slumping in his seat. That was close; he hadn’t even made it off the train yet and he was already within inches of getting smacked by Professor Lovelace. He exhaled again, thinking how he’d dodged a bullet and then frowning deeply as he remembered his dripping robes. “Are you kidding me?” he whispered to himself, wanting to get the words out—well, sans one word.
Maneuvering off the train wasn’t exactly an easy affair, even on the best day. It could get crowded, first years got lost, animals running wild. So it was easy to understand how the chaos could create an unfortunate situation. However. When a group of Slytherins had brushed passed him and suddenly there was a loose phial of some kind of potion sloshing around? That shit had been on purpose. At first he was just grateful his skin didn’t instantly start melting off—there was no telling what those lunatics were brewing up on their end and Luka didn’t know enough about potions to even begin to guess what it was based on smell or something. And then the inconvenience of having to sit through a whole opening ceremony in wet robes? That was annoying as hell, and also unfair. But then! He got what the whole point of the potion was when the jet-black of his robes bloomed into a bright, hot pink where the liquid had splashed onto them, like a bleach stain—but so much worse because it only took a few minutes before the wretched pink swallowed all of the black and that’s how Gryffindor’s Team Captain ended up in a set of burn-your-eyes-pink robes.

“Assholes!” he hissed into the empty train car, but there was no one else. Just him and his cats. Although, Kitty did meow loudly in the wake of his voice and he took that as agreement from her. Well. He didn’t really have time to change. But those Slytherins no doubt wanted him to feel embarrassed, so the obvious solution would just be not to be embarrassed. “I’ll walk in there and own this and we’ll see who’s all smug about it then,” he thought to himself with a smirk. “Plus, I bet the rest of Gryffindor won’t be too impressed.” It wouldn’t be the first time Gryffindor had rallied behind one of their own, a martyr pranked by a Slytherin loser. And it wouldn’t be the last. Grabbing up his final belongings, he was extra careful not to jostle around Kitty and Stella as he exited the train car, heading the opposite way from the first years towards the carriages. As usual, he left his luggage at the check point to be taken to the dormitories, kissing both Kitty and Stella on the ears before he headed for the carts, pink robes billowing dramatically around him like he had a localized storm.
Long old enough to take himself to the train station, going to Hogwarts wasn’t a big affair in his family anymore. That was fine, but he’d stayed up a little too late reading articles about Peruvian Venomtooths and how not to waste away in an excruciating, acidic death when encountering one—as a result, he might’ve overslept just a tad. He’d barely made the Express as it was, and hadn’t found any other Gryffindors he recognized. Even now, he was still off from the rest of his house, but that was fine too—it wasn’t like he didn’t know where everyone would be.
In his haste, Luka missed a body in his peripheral vision and bumped shoulders with another boy, jarring tendons from the impact.
“Watch where you’re going!” he growled, whipping around to see Kieran Moon smirking over his shoulder.
“Nice outfit,” the Ravenclaw snickered, continuing on his way. Fire sparked through Luka’s veins as he watched the receding form of the other wizard. A swear rose to his lips but he bit it back down. There was no point. He wasn’t scared of the other boy—he could definitely take him in a fight and he didn’t care who his parents were. But he knew from their few interactions that nothing seemed to get under Kieran’s skin. Yelling after him now would just make Luka look like the erratic one.

“Go read a book or something, loser,” Luka grumbled to himself. The fact that he also liked to read books didn’t occur to him, and didn’t play into his silent insult. From there, he hustled to one of the carriages and one hop, skip, and jump later, he found himself entering the Great Hall. Just one shallow inhale was all he needed to steal himself, and then he walked in like he owned the place, head held high, blazing bubblegum robes and all. There was a seat he’d staked out his first year at the school, when he was still a tumbling newbie who didn’t know anyone and had only the stories of his family to go on. But even now, when he knew pretty much everyone, he kept that same seat and at that point he went ahead and made a subtle beeline for it.
Thankfully, he’d made it in before the start of any proceedings, and he just tried not to think about how obvious his clothes would be to the faculty and staff at the head of the hall. But it wasn’t like it was his fault and who really did care at the end of the day? Luka hunkered down to watch the Sorting, clapping with the rest of his house when any of the new kids were placed into Gryffindor, though his mind drifted a bit while it was going on. Qudditch was mainly the topic—since he was captain, he needed to set a date and time for the tryouts soon. Most of the spots would probably be filled by veteran team members, but technically those positions weren’t guaranteed to them. Still, there were a few vacant slots that needed filling. He pretty much zoned out during the Headmistress’s speech too, having heard it six times now already, and instead came back to reality when the food appeared.
Glee warmed his bones right away when he noticed a plate of cocktail shrimp just a small way from him. Luka hadn’t figured out if someone in the kitchens just knew, or if his suspicion about Professor Lovelace mentioning his eating habits (though he knew the potions prof would never concede to it) to them was the case instead, but either way—shrimp was his favorite.

Kieran ~ Ravenclaw

Kieran had meandered into the hall almost late... because he’d been avoiding coming in. Once, in his fourth year, he’d literally tried to abandon the ceremony. Sneak away up to the Ravenclaw tower and just vibe alone until it was over, not hungry in the first place. But he’d been sold out; by a painting. As he was escorted to the ceremony, late, by one of the castle’s caretakers and then scolded thoroughly after by head of the house, that’s how he’d learned one of the most valuable things he’d picked up at this school. Never trust a portrait with your secrets. And unfortunately, in Hogwarts, they were everywhere.
He knew there wasn’t any point in even trying and had resigned himself to another opening ceremony, though that didn’t mean he didn’t at least think about bailing out—until he saw an old cabinet of wizardly governors giving him the side eye, that was. So Kieran meandered his way through the corridors towards the Great Hall, slipping in like a wraith and picking a seat at the Ravenclaw table randomly. He didn’t miss the way two of the nearest students fell into hushed whispers and then migrated to another bench down the table—that was totally fine because now he had the whole space to himself.
Eyes on the familiar form of Professor Black, Kieran watched with quiet interest as the Sorting ceremony commenced. He’d seen them a lot by now, obviously, but he was interested in how the hat worked and the dog-and-pony show he was witnessing now never really lost its novelty for him. It was an interesting opportunity for character studies, too. Watching each first year walk away from the hat after having their house announced... some seemed happy, others dejected, others still just excited to be there. Kieran sat with his chin propped in one hand, and though he didn’t smile or clap with the rest of the Ravenclaws when a new addition joined them, he didn’t seem totally unfriendly either.
After the ceremony, he listened politely to the Headmistress’ usual spiel, but he did raise an eyebrow at her last statement. Things to be discussed after the feast?
“That’s new,” he thought to himself, reflecting on the unusualness of that suggestion. Even as the food appeared on the tables, his dark gaze quickly skimmed the other seated professors. Did any of them look nervous? Out of place? Any new faces? He was trying to decipher what the Headmistress might want to share, the nature of the news, based on the body language of her staff alone. A few minutes into dinner though and he conceded, knowing he’d find out soon enough anyway, and instead redirected his attention to the usual opening ceremony staples—potatoes, steam vegetables, a weird looking meat.

Greer ~ Hufflepuff

“Welcome to Hufflepuff!” Greer greeted brightly, smiling like the sun each time a new first year passed her side of the table while looking for a seat. Some of the kids beamed back, others just shy smiles. Either way, it was always nice and exciting to have new people joining them in the common room. Again, she continued her good tidings without fail. “Welcome to Hufflepuff!”
Greer liked the opening ceremonies a lot. Meeting the new Hufflepuffs was always fun, and she tried to make sure everybody felt at home. Being muggle-born herself, she remembered how nerve-wracking and scary the whole thing had seemed when she’d first started to attend Hogwarts five years ago. A soft smile curled her lips at the sweet memories. Even if she’d been nervous back then, there was nothing of that sort now. Hufflepuff and Hogwarts were her homes away from home, and the warm, crackling fire and faint earthy smells of the Hufflepuff basement always reminded her of that. She hoped seeing a friendly and kind face would put some of the shyer first years at ease—it had certainly worked for her.
As always, the dark-haired girl kept her attention sharp and focused as the Headmistress spoke, not wanting to appear as if she were being disrespectful by not listening properly. It was the same rules she’d heard before; and the ones she personally always followed. Of course, there were plenty of students who broke them, but Greer herself was not one. She clapped lightly as a show of support when the Headmistress finished and then delightedly turned her attention to the food, reaching straight for the mashed potatoes. Potatoes were one of her most favorite. And being a vegetarian, also a staple at a lot of these fancier feasts since the meat was out. Instead, she focused on choosing the yummy looking vegetables and any flaky breads she saw.
“Are you excited for the school year?” she warmly asked the housemate nearest to her, making conversation.

IMELDA DOHERTY

[Interactions: Artemis Letho Letho ]

As always the train ride to Hogwarts had been an odd mix of chaotic and enjoyable. She and her friends engaged in spirited debates on the adequacy of the newly appointed keeper of Puddlemere United, with Imelda winning the debate about whether Oliver Wood was as good a keeper as everyone had said. Overall, though, talk of quidditch didn't seem to hold the same charm for her as it once had as a little girl.

Increasingly over the years, she had become less boisterous and 'somewhat tolerable' in the eyes of her twin brother Midas. Imelda was not sure whether to count this a compliment or not, when coming from him.

Imelda blinked several times as she felt herself jostled by a few older students on the way to the Great Hall. She'd forgotten where she was again. With a contented sigh, she followed the throng into the hall and found a place next to a vaguely familiar member of her house.

After listening to the speech, she turned to the older boy next to her with a bright smile.
'There's really never anything new to these speeches is there?'

To be honest, Artemis wasn't exactly expecting anyone to talk to him. Not that it never happened - it did, actually, and there was even a small group of students, mostly girls, that followed him sometimes in hopes of having their actual futures foretold... Which he didn't mind doing... But, in general, during the welcoming feast most people tended to focus on their closer friends, and he... Didn't really have those. Colleagues, yes. Classmates, sure. Some that could be very loosely considered friends, he supposed, but not close friends, not best friends, because everyone always had somebody else...

So he was a bit surprised to hear someone talking next to him.

Naturally, at first he simply assumed it wasn't to him, because why would it be. Still, he glanced to the side, out of pure curiosity - to see the person that had spoken. A girl - though the voice alone had told him that much already - and one that he... Recognised. Yes. A year or two younger than him, if he recalled correctly; he had been seeing her around the Tower in previous years. A chess player, he was pretty sure. Her name was... Something starting with an I...

Oh, and she was looking at him.

"She uses synonyms sometimes, actually. Last year it was Forbidden instead of Dark for the Forest, for example. I can't wait to hear the next year's adjective, she's going to have to get creative soon," he said without really thinking about it, because that way his tiny delay from before could be read as just him considering the question... A rhetoric one, it seemed, but that had never stopped him before.

Knowing what he needed to know now, he turned back to his plate - or, more specifically, to his glass, already filled with juice. He took it with his left hand, lifted it from the table, but not all the way to his lips yet... Because there was still more he wanted to say first. He hadn't properly exhausted the topic.

"My guess is that she's trying to lull us into a false sense of security, and then she'll suddenly drop something big and shocking on us. Maybe..." He clicked the fingers of his free hand at that point, before resting his forearm on the table before him. "That she's eloping with a centaur to live in the Forest, and leaving her job to the groundskeeper," he finished, satisfied with his idea and showing it - through the corners of his lips rising just a little bit.

Ah, Imelda. That was the name.

IMELDA DOHERTY

[Interactions: Artemis Letho Letho ]

In truth, Imelda ought not to have been surprised at actually getting a response to her question. However, the older boy hadn't seemed like the type of person to humour her with a response, let alone such a thoughtful one.

A bright smile threatened to break out onto her porcelain features at the mention of synonyms. It almost reminded her of Midas, though without the snark and condescension. It was nice.
'I always thought it should be called The Ominous Forest, or perhaps the Forboding Forest...yes, that has a ring to it.' She had been about to tuck in to the vast array of food on her plate when the boy continued his train of thought.

"My guess is that she's trying to lull us into a false sense of security, and then she'll suddenly drop something big and shocking on us. Maybe...That she's eloping with a centaur to live in the Forest, and leaving her job to the groundskeeper,"

Imelda's bright blue eyes widened in amusement at this. It was not often that people had such wild imaginings, even amongst her house. 'I heard the centaur Firenze had a few admirers in his day when he taught divination here. You might be onto something.' She took a bite of her food, gulping it down quickly before having another fanciful thought of her own.

'It would all be very Lydia Bennett and George Wickham. What a scandal.' Her face fell after a moment, realising that he might not know what she was talking about. As a pureblood herself, it was already odd for her to know of muggle literature, but most muggles in general, as far as she knew, weren't overly familiar with the works of Jane Austen, let alone wizards.

'Uh, never mind. Anyway it's nice to meet you. I'm Imelda.'

That... Was actually not a bad idea at all, Artemis quickly decided. The Ominous Forest could work, sure, it was in the same general family of names as the already existing ones, but - Foreboding. Fore-fore. The Foreboding Forest. Yes, he liked the sound of that. And really, at that point it seemed like a wasted opportunity - after all the Rowenas Ravenclaw, Godrics Gryffindor, Helgas Hufflepuff, and Salazars Slytherin.

"Mm, the Foreboding Forest. Hogwarts likes its alliterations," he commented, but to be honest the other topic was even more interesting - or, well, amusing - to him, and so he abandoned this one easily. After all, who didn't like to think and gossip about the rich and wild love life of their headmistress?

... Literally wild, in this particular scenario.

Surprisingly enough, Imelda didn't disappoint him and his imagination - and the corners of his lips, already raised, twitched in response to her words. He breathed out through his nose in a way that almost resembled a quiet laugh and nodded his head, before finally lifting the glass to his mouth. That bought him a moment to consider the vision spreading in his mind; Firenze... Oh, yes, he had heard that about him as well.

And he had wondered...

Before he could voice his ideas, new and old, Imelda spoke again, mentioning names he didn't know - and that made him take a quick look at her again to better judge the situation. Her expression had changed, apparently, and well... That wouldn't do. Not that he understood exactly what had just happened, but he could still take a wild guess... More or less.

"Not to sound creepy, but I know, I've heard it before. Artemis here. And I have absolutely no idea what you meant just now, but I do like scandals, so keep going if you want," he said, then paused for a moment, purposefully furrowing his brow a bit. "Also, according to my information, that Firenze was... Well, is, a blond. That's a gift, you know. And add to that a palomino body? See, I wouldn't be surprised if it was him personally taking part in that whole eloping business," he said, nodding again.

He was, of course, exaggerating a lot, but there was a seed of truth in what he was saying, too. He did really like palomino horses, for example, even though they were not his absolute favourites. And light hair? Yes, that was, objectively speaking, attractive to most people. A genetic win, mutated - and then kept specifically and only for being pretty.

And, well... They were talking about centaurs. With horse lower halves. Some could definitely like that idea, and he strongly believed that great people deserved great things.

Beatrice Sylvie Dubios was nervous to say the least. While her parents discussed her transfer she was sorted into to Hufflepuff. Just to avoid the awkwardness of being a sixteen year old being sorted with the first years. She kept to herself during the train ride not knowing who was who. Her parents told her she needed to keep to herself to avoid any more accidents.

When she got to the dining hall she sat in the back of the tables by herself. She cheered when ever a first year was sorted into Hufflepuff like she was. Her fingers fiddled as she looked around seeing who she would be spending her years with. She left lifelong friends but was confident she would be able to make some new ones. She listened intently to all the rules and noted them mentally.

The return to Hogwarts was also something that Adalicia looked forward to. Her father’s side of the family would always gather at the main ancestral home before the start of the school year. The next few months would be spent with all of her cousins, aunts, and uncles as they caught up with one another. It was always a bittersweet way to welcome the start of their schooling once again. This year hadn’t been any different. She thought back to her time in Nigeria fondly, it had been eventful to say the least. Before she had left her family had held a feast for the future of their line, their legacies. Together they’d prepared everything, joking and reminiscing while they cooked. The Musas had danced and prayed that night, sending offerings to their ancestors and Orishas in exchange for protection and guidance. Adalicia was sure that she had seen the spirits made flesh right before her eyes as she danced with everything within her.

Her face remained neutral as she thought back, though there was a hint of warmth in her hazel eyes. Adalicia was soon brought back to reality, the look in her eyes gone as soon as it came. She only half listened while Professor Black spoke. Her eyes drifted to the first year students in boredom. It seems as though they were smaller with every passing year. Their faces were a mix of nerves and excitement. Some of them held expressions of bravado, as if unaffected by what was happening. She challenged herself in figuring out which student would be sorted into what house and clapped politely when another snake joined the pit.

Adalicia turned her attention to her plate. One of her favorite dishes, Hachis Parmentier, sat warm on the porcelain. Sadly there was no red wine to enjoy it with, instead she would have to settle for a simple glass of water.

Gavriel (Gavy)

Patronus: Manx Cat

Wand: Acacia, Phoenix Feather

House: Hufflepuff

In celebration of the start of a new year at Hogwarts Gavy had spent the whole train ride talking with her friends and picking out the perfect hair color for their first night back. In honor of her Hufflepuff pride, the young metamorphmagus turned her long naturally platinum blonde hair into her house colors. The top of her head was black and faded beautifully into a smoky gray that became a yellow ombre at the lower portion of her hair. Because of this the bubbly fifth year stood out from the crowd as she had a tendency to do. It was well known that this particular metamorphmagus had a habit of turning her hair and eyes into unusual colors which oftentimes could reflect her mood or inner thoughts. Currently, her eyes were their normal shade of jade green and were burning bright with excitement and laughter as she joked with her friends.

Turning her head Gavy noticed an older girl sitting at the Hufflepuff table that she hadn't seen before. Standing up and moving a few rows down she plopped into the seat beside the girl and smiled. "Hey! Are you new around here? I heard we got some transfers this year." She asked with a smile as she did her best to make the girl feel welcome. "I'm Gavriel but you can call me Gavy, everyone does." She added and held her hand out to give the girl a warm handshake. "I'm sure you'll love it here! Where did you come from? Oh wow, that sounded rude. One sec! What school did you come from?" She spewed before realizing how many words she had just thrown at the girl. "Sorry, I guess I am just excited." She apologized innocently.

Einar

Patronus: Dire Wolf

Wand: Norwegian Oak, Dragon Heartstring

Class: History of Magic

The warmth of the Greathall and the sight of all the students filling the tables gave Einar the sense of once again being at home. When the students were away and he was on his travel there was often the feeling of a void within him, but without fail, come the start of the semester every year, that void filled with warmth and light. This sight before him never failed to make the old man smile as he took a sip of strong whiskey from his goblet and listened to the staff around him. Many of them had been on some form of adventure over the summer and were filling each other in over the feast. Einar himself had been around to some of the greatest wizarding libraries and dig sights during their months off and had even brought a few artifacts back to share with everyone.

Seeing several students waving his way the old Viking of a man raised his goblet in greeting. It was nice that the students seemed to enjoy him and his class, especially since many tended to think of magic history as a boring topic. He of course did his best to make it lively and it seemed he did a good enough job since the students usually seemed to hang onto every word that came out of his mouth. "It is good to be back." He hummed to himself as he took another sip of his drink.

Esfir (Essie)

Essie could still picture the looks of horror and disbelief when she told her family she would not be attending her final year at Koldovstoretz but instead at Hogwarts in the UK. Her parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, basically anyone with blood relations tried their best to stop her. Even members of the Russian wizarding government did their best to persuade young Essie from acting so recklessly and leaving her homeland. None of their words meant anything to her though since she knew it wasn't really her they were worried about. No, they were only concerned that they would not be able to keep an eye on her so far from home, that they would not be able to ensure she was preparing herself properly. They only wanted to keep her close in order to make sure she would not do anything to compromise her role as the host of Baba Yaga, not that she really could without dying which was a tempting idea more often than not. Still, no one had the guts to truly tell her no when she told them she was going. No one wanted to risk the wrath of Baba Yaga and what she might do if she sensed someone was trying to disrespect the flesh suit that would be hers within the next two years.

These were all thoughts that drifted through Essie's head as she sat at the Slytherin table and quietly studied those around her. While she didn't show it she was doing her best to make sure it was she who remained in control. She didn't want any unexpected possessing of her body to occur over dinner and she certainly didn't want Baba Yaga going off on any of the poor souls around her. The closer she found herself to her nineteenth birthday, less than two years, the harder it was to keep the old hag from taking over. She hoped to make this year about what she wants, about tasting freedom if only for a brief time, about her life rather than constantly being reminded of the fact that it would not be her life for much longer. It seemed no matter where she was on the planet she would always be haunted by the fate that loomed over her like a wave about to consume her.

Silently the ebony-haired beauty picked at her plate and sipped from her goblet. Her icy blue gaze flickered from her food to those around her as she did her best to figure out her next move. Would she try to make a friend? What was the point of that if it wouldn't last? She wasn't certain and honestly, she was tempted to leave and find Lev so she could cuddle him close to her. She noticed another Slytherin girl sitting across from her who was also picking at her plate. For a moment she watched the girl, analyzing her features and trying to figure out what was going through her head. She didn't make it obvious and casually sipped the water from her goblet as she did so.

Kenna

Patronus: Hyena

Wand: Larch, Thunderbird tail feather

Class: Herbology

At the staff table, Kenna was currently sitting beside Leon with her hand on his as she offered him a sip of her wine. "Come now, try some." She insisted with a smile as she offered him the strong red which had been stored in a bourbon barrel giving it a special warmth when swallowed. "I'm sure you'll like it." She insisted as she held the goblet a little closer with a playful pleading look in her eyes. On the herbology professor's left hand a rather new piece of jewelry glistened in the soft candlelight with each move she made which, to those who noticed it, was a topic of great excitement. The engagement ring was beautiful much like the couple it represented with twisting gold vines for the band and black diamonds glittering around a moonstone center gem. In Kenna's mind, it was a perfect ring to represent the two of them and she knew Leon must have felt the same when he decided to give it to her.

She had been excited to share news of the engagement with her fellow professors but was even more excited to tell her students. She knew many of them enjoyed gossiping about her relationship with the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor and that ever since they started their flirtation the year before many of the students had made the romance their business. It was so funny how the students had known that Leon and she had had feelings for each other before they had realized it themselves.

Siena

Patronus: Red Panda

Wand: Laurel, Horned Serpent Horn

Position: Groundskeeper

Seeing students and teachers back in the great hall was a beautiful sight in Siena's eyes. During the months they were away Hogwarts felt unusually empty, especially when she was sometimes one of the only people there. While others went off to enjoy a vacation and trips Siena stayed behind to care for the castle and the ground all year round. She wasn't in any way bitter about it since Hogwarts was quite literally her home. She signed a warm welcome to those she made eye contact with and made sure to give her best smile from where she sat at the staff table.

It still felt so odd for her to be sitting here even after two years. Not long ago had she been among the students and now she sat with the members of the staff as one of them. Her seat was where her grandfather once sat during these special meals. When she focused she swore she could still smell the scent of pine and juniper on the chair, the smell of the old man she missed more than anything. Now she was his legacy, along with this school, and with the new semester starting it meant the school was once again as it should be, full of joy and potential.

  • Rhys Nightingale was relieved to be leaving his family's residence and heading back to Hogwarts for another year. It was not easy to live under their captious gazes and authoritarian rules. It was like walking on thin ice when he was in their presence. It was not comfortable as one's home should be. Hogwarts, on the other hand? It had provided a perfect way to escape the pressures of his parents and had given his mind some ease.

If he were to be honest, the dark-haired boy had purposely tuned out most of the yearly Sorting Ceremony and the headmistress's speech. Much of it did not pertain to him anyway, so it was relatively unimportant and perfectly dull to the Ravenclaw.

The legilimens was seated next to a blue-eyed girl who had picked up a conversation with Artemis, another 6th year like himself. Scandals and centaurs. It was an odd conversation, to say the least. Even so, Rhys could not help but eavesdrop a little on it.

Imelda. Ah, yes, that was the girl's name. While he was clearly a few years senior to her, he could vaguely recall hearing that name at some point. He was not sure where he had heard it or if he had picked it up through his ability of legilimency, but he supposed that did not really matter.

Keeping to himself, the Ravenclaw began to sample the meal that had appeared before him.

“Welcome to Hufflepuff!” a warm greeting came from right beside Anetta. She turned to her right only to find out that she had been sitting right beside Greer, of all people. As far as Anetta had seen, this muggle-born senpai had been sporting such a bubbly attitude in every Start-of-Year Feasts. She couldn't help but to smile upon remembering that very same greeting back in her first year. I mean, what was Greer again, a prefect? But there's no way that she was one in Anetta's first year at Hogwarts, right?

And then a question drew the half-Japanese muggle-born's attention, “Are you excited for the school year?” "Welp, Greer-senpai!" Anetta yelped a little, but then returned Greer's warm smile. It did help with her nearly-wrecked nerves back in the first year, after all. "Pretty much, yeah. I can't wait to go back to the greenhouse..." she drifted off, mainly because gardening had been one of Anetta's fortes (her other one being arithmancy).

Interactions: Artemis Letho Letho and Rhys BOKEH. BOKEH.

Imelda was very surprised that Artemis was still talking to her. She was younger than him after all, and most older students simply ignored the younger ones. She was also surprised and delighted to carry on talking about scandals even if he didn't know who Jane Austen was. It appeared that now she had coaxed him into conversation, Artemis was great company.

'You know my name already? Well, I guess that's just from being on the quidditch team. Pleasure to meet you, Artemis. I'm not surprised that you don't know about Lydia Bennet and George Wickham. They're from a muggle book and they eloped to Scotland so George could get a large amount of dowry money in exchange for the damaged reputation of Lydia's family. Eloping with young ladies was frowned upon in the Regency times you know and-'

She stopped herself again. She really didn't want to bore him so instead she though asking him about himself would be more polite. Most people were all too happy to talk about themselves, especially the boys in her year that vied for her attention.

'Do you like books? I think it's presumptuous of all the other houses to assume all of us Ravenclaws are bookworms.'

It was then that Imelda felt distinctly that someone was watching her. It wasn't an uncomfortable feeling, more curious. She turned briefly to her other side to see another older boy trying to be discreet about eavesdropping.
'Oh, hello,' she said amiably. He seemed familiar, like she had seen him in the library a few times, but his name had escaped her.

Sylvie smiled brightly at the friendly soul. “Not rude at all, I transferred from Beauxbatons. It’s nice to have someone so friendly. Oh how rude of me I just started rambling on. I’m Béatrice, but everyone calls me Sylvie.” She introduced herself. At first she was afraid she wouldn’t make any friends this late into school.

Sylvie was very excited to see how things worked here at Hogwarts. She hoped the other students wouldn’t get too annoyed with her questions, “So what can you tell me about the extracurriculars here? Is there anything I should study up on?” She asked leaned her head forward on her hand ready to listen to all the tips and tricks for Hogwarts.

Artemis didn't mind Imelda's assumption at all - in fact, he was more than happy to let her continue to believe that he remembered her name from some or another discussion about their House's team... In reality, he knew next to nothing about it and its members - as well as the matches in general. Quidditch wasn't exactly his thing. When it came to brooms, he preferred racing and acrobatics over playing the actual game... And even that paled in comparison to his favourite means of - flying - transportation.

Still, it did him no harm and probably made the girl just a little bit happier to be known.

And so he listened as she explained to him a bit more about the characters from a Muggle book and their part of the plot. It seemed she was talking about... Historical fiction, then, and that was not his area of expertise, either... Though he did know some things about eloping and how it was frowned upon - not just in the past. He wondered, for a moment, if Imelda was even aware of that fact... Perhaps she would have found it romantic.

His head tilted to the side as he moved his glass a bit - still holding it in the air and making the juice inside it swirl around. It was a mindless gesture, really, though not one performed out of boredom... And while it didn't stop when Imelda paused, he did glance at her again, curious of this slight change in topic.

"Stereotypes can be useful... But yes, I do like them. Mm, perhaps I will write a book one day. I certainly have enough notes to fill at least a few," he said, and wasn't that an idea. To be fair, it wouldn't have been that unusual - a couple of members of his family had already done that in the past, including very distant past, even though usually they had only published their prophecies big and small... Of course after having already profited from the ones that could actually make a difference... Come to think of it, a huge part of his relatives' fortunes was kind of achieved by cheating, as some would have called it. Artemis preferred to consider it a practical application of their natural talents.

He would have been content to continue the topic of books, even Muggle ones, but at that point he realised that Imelda's head had turned to her other side - and towards... Oh, hello. This one's name he remembered - without having to think about it, that was. They did share a room, after all, and many of their classes.

"He likes books, too, you know. We must have lured him in," he said, of course technically still talking to Imelda and even lowering his voice a bit to make it seem like he was trying to be discreet, only... Obviously without really trying, especially since he was openly looking at Rhys now, with amusement hidden in his eyes.

Was he trying to make sure Imelda would stay interested in bringing the other boy into their conversation?

Why, of course he was.

“What, who’s cute?” Luka asked right away, turning a cloudy, honey-brown gaze to Vivian when she spoke. To be honest, he’d been so caught up in his own thoughts about specifically what she came to mention—Quidditch—that he hadn’t immediately registered that he’d even sat down beside his own teammate. “Oh, the kids.” Luka tilted his head to regard the line of first years who were being cycled through the Sorting Hat, contemplating Vi’s question. Were they cute? “Guess I haven’t really thought about it before. But yeah, I mean, maybe they are kinda?” he thought to himself, examining the baby-fat filled cheeks of a couple of the eleven-year-olds. “Yeah, they’re kinda cute, I guess,” he agreed with Vivian, nodding at her statement, though he broke into a grin at the mention of the Q-word, his perfect white teeth shining. “That’d be cool! I was actually just thinking about try-outs and stuff, it’s like you read my mind! I mean, first years can’t try out but who knows, maybe one of them is a future champ? Not that we’ll be playing with them or anything, but you know what I mean.” Unless there was a special exception made, as sixth years, neither he nor Vivian would still be attending Hogwarts by the time these kids were old enough to try out for the house team.
“What, you don’t like shrimp?” Luka asked, scrunching his nose is mock disgust at her before he smiled cheekily. “Shrimp is the best ever.” At that, he happily popped two of the shrimps into his mouth, chewed with a contented look on his face, and then also reached for an apple from the same bowl as Vivian. There was a moment of quiet from him as he got his plate in order, piled with shrimp, steamed broccoli, and two sweet rolls. “So, did you have a good summer?” Luka asked, glancing at Vivian. The longer he sat on the table, the more he forgot his unfortunate encounter with the Slytherins and the pink robes. “I’m excited for school, I think we’re gonna have a good season!”

Sitting up here was one of those things that Calypso didn't think she would ever get used to. Still, it felt a little more like home than it did at last year's feast. Looking out over the crowd of students, Calypso recognized a good number them and even found herself glancing around to search out some familiar pupils. The multicolored hair of the Hufflepuff seeker was easy to spot, though Gavy seemed otherwise occupied so Cali didn't bother waving. Then there was the gaggle of Gryffindor players, Angel and Annie side by side per usual and Vivian was seated nearby. Those girls had real potential to win this year, though it hurt her old Ravenclaw pride on some level to admit it she was excited to see them play.

Then, there were other familiar faces. Faces like Leon Black, her cousin and close friend since childhood... And his fiancé. Calypso cast a quick glance towards Kenna and sighed as she caught an eyeful of Kenna's puppy-dog expression and their locked hands. That would never not be weird. She still thought of Leon as that little kid Oberon pushed out of a tree and she learned to ride a broom with. Don't get her wrong, she was happy for him, she just... She wasn't sure about her new in-law. She and Kenna had never really gotten to the 'get to know you' part of the relationship what with the fact that Calypso only ever saw Kenna when Leon was around and when Leon was around... Lets just say they were an affectionate couple and Calypso wasn't here for third wheeling. She didn't dislike Kenna, she just... Well, she didn't know her and now the practical stranger was about to be family. It was weird. This was weird.

Calypso's chronic state of singleness since she broke it off with her own fiancé three years ago might also have something to do with her mixed feelings about the engagement, but she wasn't ready to psychoanalyze that just yet. Instead she turned to glance over at the other staff members and smiled in welcome at the newest addition. The new groundskeeper seemed more a girl than a woman to Calypso, but that just meant her gaze grew a bit softer when she offered a smile and wave.

Annie wasn't the type to squeal and jump into someone's arms when she saw them on the train platform, but the warm smile on her lips at the sight of Angelique Chimere was about as close as it got. It was always a long summer at Aunt Matilda's and this year had been no different. Though Annie was no lover of school and would likely be moaning over scrolls due and the ridiculousness of learning magical history in a matter of days, for the time being she was thrilled to be heading back to Hogwarts.

The train ride was mediocre. She sat with Angel and glared at anyone under the age of fifteen who attempted to enter their compartment. Then she took a nap, did the mandatory chatting about summer activities, or lack there of, and now they were back at school and settling in for the feast. Annie, per usual, paid no attention to the sorting and only perked up again once the food had appeared across the table and they were free to talk once more.

"Thank Merlin. I swear, that thing gets longer and longer each year..." Annie lamented to her friend as she plucked a few scoops of mashed potatoes onto her plate. "Hey, are you planning on joining dueling club this year? I want to but-" she paused after going through half the motion of standing up to reach across Angel's plate for her food and then sat down again, recalling her friend's previous insistence that it was a rude habit, "pass the chicken," she insisted without pause before continuing onto the original conversation again. "I'm not sure if I can deal with practice dueling with Professor Rose while failing her class." Of course, even Annie didn't get behind that fast, but she was sure it would happen and then it would just be awkward. "I wish she was a dick so I wouldn't feel guilty about ignoring her assignments."

"Aconite, you say? I wanna see it~" Anetta seemed overjoyed (or was it excitement?) at Greer's offer. The only plant she got to bring to school was catnip -- in case either Aiiro or any other Hufflepuff cats wanna get high. Not that much, but she did take care of it like how she would with any other plants.

And then Greer asked Anetta about any particular classes she's looking forward to just when the latter was about to take another bite of her meal. "Herbology aside, I'd say Arithmancy. I wanna dig more into numbers and magic, y'see," the half-Japanese girl mused with a wink.

As the students continued to mingle and eat the staff did the same while keeping their eyes on them. A little while later the headmistress clapped her hands all the finished dishes disappearing in a blink of an eye. “Alright students before you head to bed I have two announcements for you. The first is a joyous occasion our head of house Slytherin Professor Black and head of house Hufflepuff Professor Rose are to be wed sometime this year! So if we would all be so kind to congratulate them.”she said warmly as a thunderous applause filled the air from all the tables. The loudest being Slytherin and Hufflepuff out of the four houses once the cheering settled down Headmistress Raven looked a bit more somber as did the rest of the staff. “I’m sure some of you might have been hearing rumors this summer that Lord Voldemort had a secret child. We have discovered this to be true though there have been no leads on who the child is or where they might currently be. Now please don’t fear while at Hogwarts you all will be safe and protected some parents might not have wanted me to inform you but I feel it is within your rights to know .”she said calmly and firmly as she looked out over the students who now all seemed to be speaking urgently and quietly amongst themselves while looking concerned.

She stood waiting for them to settle down once more before speaking again.”We will continue to go about our days and lives as normal. The staff here are all excellent and will keep you safe. Now tomorrow starts the first day of classes and I expect great things from you all. Now prefects please lead your first years to the house dorms! May you all get a good nights rest.”she said warmly as she dismissed the students for bed. She watched as they all began heading out the Professors also watching before they to headed off to get ready for the next day. She headed off heading towards the headmistress’s office entering it before going towards the two portraits one of Albus Dumbledore the other Severus Snape. “I believe the child is here I just don’t know how to discover him. All the info is murky and warped I’m not sure who all is interfering but they sure are making my job difficult.”she said with a tired sigh as the two watched her. “You two have the most free reign with your help I’m sure we might discover something.”she murmured before settling down in her chair.

TIME SKIP ITS BEEN 6 WEEKS AND HALLOWEEN IS APPROACHING. The students should all be heading to Professor Blacks class that will be held by him and Professor Fawley for a special event! Once we’ve finished up with this event the students will be moving on to Professor Rose’s class which will then lead to some Halloween ball preparations.

Jace’s neighbor seemed friendly enough. It was a Slytherin girl, who unfortunately didn’t know a thing about Quidditch. Jace tried to listen to her drone on about the greatness of Slytherin house and whatnot, but he eventually ended up tuning her out. For goodness sake, she didn’t even watch the Quidditch games! Jace hoped that the other Slytherins were more enthusiastic about Quidditch. If not, his years at Hogwarts were going to be rather boring....

Then, there were mentions of Voldemort having a secret child. Jace froze. If Voldemort was going to have a secret child, the child was probably in Slytherin. Jace was suddenly glad that he had stop talking to his neighbor. Who knew? Maybe she was Voldemort’s child. Jace was suddenly very worried about interacting with Voldemort’s child.

Eventually, the Slytherin first years were led to their Common Room. It was honestly a fascinating place, just like how his cousins had described it. It seemed a bit spooky too, maybe perhaps because the room was dimly lit. Hearing the prefect state the common room passcode, Jace looked around at his fellow first years. Could one of them be Voldemort‘s child? After the prefects left the room, the first year Slytherin boys began to settle in, some of them bickering over whatever. Jace remained distant from them, due to his doubt.

A few weeks passed and Jace soon forgot about the worrisome threat about Voldemort’s child. He was doing alright in his classes and getting decent marks. Well, Flying class was perhaps a highlight at Hogwarts. Jace was confident that he had definitely impressed Professor Fawley with his flying skills. Out of everyone in his Flying class, he had been the first to summon the assigned school broom and the only one who had managed to pull it off with his eyes closed. He secretly hoped that Professor Fawley would put in a good word for him to whoever was the Slytherin Quidditch Captain. From the chatter at the Slytherin table during meals, the captain was a male student by the name of Maverick Thorne? He seemed like a pretty influential student from what Jace could observe. Jace hadn’t gotten the time to greet the Quidditch captain personally, but had sent a few owls to Maverick, inquiring about Quidditch tryouts and the availability of the Seeker position.

Today, there was going to be some special event? It was going to be hosted by Professor Black, who was also the fascinating head of house of Slytherin. Jace had to admit that he was somewhat intimidated by the large man, but still had a decent amount of respect for him. According to legend from the older students, he had been a famous auror known for capturing dangerous dragons. According to one of the fifth years, Professor Black had been tackling a Norwegian Horntail when it had bitten off his leg during a frightening battle. Still, Professor Black had persevered and had slaughtered the dragon with ease, not even complaining about the pain.

Of course, all of this was fake, but Jace believed every word of his older Slytherin peers.

Professor Fawley was also going to be cohosting it as well. Jace was curious about the event. What did Defense Against the Dark Arts and Flying have to do with each other? Were they going to cast spells while riding brooms? Jace grinned upon thinking about it. That sounded like a genius idea. Although, he only knew how to cast a few spells, one of them being Lumos. None of them were going to be very useful in combat...

Checking the time, Jace realized that he was going to be late. Despite the fact that none of his fellow students were rushing to go anywhere in particular, Jace sprinted through the crowd like crazy, until he found Professor Black’s classroom. Giving a sigh of relief, Jace ran into the classroom, almost out of breath.

“Hey Professor Black... Hey Professor Fawley... Sorry I’m late,” Jace said. About to grab the seat closest to the door, Jace looked around. The room was practically empty. Was he early? Jace was confused. He decided that it would be best if he took a seat.

”So what’s the special event for today?” Jace asked curiously, taking out an ink well and quill, setting it on his desk.
