Lenora was apprehensive. Mainly because the kids were Powered and she didn’t know much about what powers they had. She was excited too, because it was her first case. That alone is a massive thing for her. She smiled, but it was faint. She would need to focus on the situation and make sure it didn’t go sideways.

She almost felt sorry for their parents, who would have to deal with the mess the kids left behind.

As soon as she approached the East End outskirts, she hear a loud crunch of glass. Half a block up she could see a body that had been thrown through the windshield of a car. A teenage boy with writhing snakes coiled around his outstretched arms stood on the sidewalk nearby.

Before she could even blink, the body in the windshield leaped into the sky. It was another teenage boy whose woolly knees bent backward, like a goat's.

The East End was home to a large portion of the animalistic Powered population. They were known for forming gangs based on their powers and for not really liking each other. As far as Lenora knew, there was an especially fierce feud between two local Ani-gangs, The Cloven and The Scales, however this could have been just a case of two teenagers fighting over a girl.

As goat-boy bounded through the air, snake-boy reacted. His arm-snakes surged forward, straightening their impossibly long bodies and clamping on to goat-boy's thighs with their teeth. Snake-boy then whiped his arms back, using the snakes as levers to smash goat-boy into the pavement.

The boat-boy was at a terrible disadvantage.

- Jump in and separate them.
- Jump in and teach them both a lesson.
- Hang back and observe.
- Call out to them.

Lenora inhaled sharply, her mind working swiftly. She needed to be careful, but she also needed to make sure that no one else got hurt. They were two very aggressive teenagers with more power than actually should have. She moved forward, her eyes narrowing.
“Hey!”
Her voice echoed across the way and she lifted her arms, using a little of her power to seperate them both.
“What in the hell do you think you’re doing?”

Along with her flight powers, she also had the possibly to create and wield surges of energy, which allowed her to move stuff around or keep someone immobile. However, those powers of hers were never too stable and now, with the fray she got into, they were impossible to control. What she thought was just a little nudge to separate the boys, turned into a full on surge of power that sent the snake-boy flying, knocking against a nearby wall.

The goat boy was already bounding up the street, bleating curses as he fled. Which was just as well - her only goal here was to stop the teens from killing each other.

"They were at it for almost an hour and no one did a thing."

A voice behind Lenora made her turn around to find a mother and her young daughter standing on the sidewalk, both looking relieved. The mother pressed a tissue to the little girl's forehead, against a small cut.

"They were blocking the door to our building." The mother said. "We tried to run inside but got hit with some debris... Anyway, who do I have to thank for stopping them?"

- Introduce yourself, your name should be getting out there.
- Introduce yourself with your hero alias.
- Stay anonymous.

Lenora looked at the two boys as they retreated, making a disgruntled noise as they got away. She had wanted to smack them upside the head, while telling them off for the destruction of other people’s property. She turned on her heel, not entirely expecting the mother and her daughter. With a wide-eyes glance over them both, Lenora cursed softly as she realised that the little girl was injured.

“I’m so sorry for what happened to you and your daughter. I’m...”
She trailed off, unsure of how to introduce herself.
“I’m Quantum, but you can call me Lenora. Lenora Gale.”
She offered a smile to the woman, it was a little nervous, but it was genuine.

"Thank you, Lenora." The mother said.

"Are you a real live Powered Hero?" The little girl whispered, gazing up at her.

"Oh, yes she is." The mother answered instead, offering another thankful look and smile.

With her first job well done in a short period, Lenora had enough time to take her first paycheck from the Agency (it was not really a check, it was a digital transfer of funds to her holo card, but it sounded better) and return to her flat with enough spare time to take a break and make a plan for what she would do until the Agency called on her again.

- You live alone.
- You live with your younger sibling.
- You live with your parents.

Lenora, as much as she loved her family, preferred to live alone. She was free to cook what she wanted (within her price range) and she could keep the flat clean, since it was only her living there. She even had a habit of walking around in basically nothing during the summer months. It was more comfortable for her and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

The flat was small, but it just made it feel cosier. There were multiple book shelves filling a good portion of the space, with various books and knick-knacks. There were pictures of her family floating around, all proudly on display. She smiled when she passed one of her younger brother, with his dyed blue hair sticking out at every angle. Her and Alex had always been close.

She moved to her couch, which was a cream affair and flopped face-down. Lenora kicked off her boots and flexed her toes.

She had to buy groceries and she hoped that she could get that done before her next job.

Once upon a time, Lenora's parents, The Sound and The Fury, were Millennia City's most famous Powered couple. When they met in high school, they discovered that her mother's ability to generate vocal sonic waves perfectly complemented her father's ability to harness sound energy. Almost immediately after they arrived on the hero scene, the public became enamored with their budding romance and their harmonious Power set.

They were the talk of every person in the city and everyone wanted to be them. Until Lenora's fifteenth birthday.

Her parents were at a press conference, as they usually were, when young villainess crashed the event. She was Miss Artillery, one of the assassin academy's teachers and she entered ranting about how The Sound and The Fury had ruined her life. She quickly went on the offensive with her Power to generate weaponry and Lenora's parents moved to apprehend her. But for some strange reason they miscalculated their joint attack.

In what became the biggest news story of the year, The Sound and The Fury murdered Miss Artillery by blowing out her heart.

It was a disaster. The heroes were never supposed to step down to murder. And especially not such role models as them.

- Your parents lost all their money and were forced to live in slums.
- Your parents were sent to prison for Powered.
- Your parents escaped the wrath of the public and went into hiding.

Lenora’s parents had been lucky and they’d escaped the wrath of the public by going into hiding. She remembered all the news stories and the comments made about her parents, who were good people. They had just made a mistake and now they were paying for it, with the price growing heftier with each passing day.

She had watched them be destroyed by it, by the press and the public. By their own guilt. They were lucky, in a way, to avoid prison and even the slums. Lenora had been grateful that her baby brother didn’t have to deal with the consequences of the accidental murder, because she would not wish it upon anyone.

Judge Victon was the one who persisted on the "heroes turned criminals" to be apprehended and taken to the special Powered prison. However, with quick thinking and a lot of sacrifice, Lenore's parents fled the city. Judge was not happy about it and he swore to find them and bring them to justice, but the years passed and the situation calmed down.

Lenora was forced to fend for herself, but she never lost contact with her parents and in the recent years she was able to visit them in their little cottage.

Now she was a grown woman with a decent income, pushing her way through the hero list, hoping to come on top one day. Over the time, many heroes rose to the top and then were either forced down, or retired peacefully, but currently, there were several groups and individuals the public is keeping an eye on. Out of all of them, Lenora found herself most interested in...

- Rebellion, the female hero, the leader of the current most prominent group in the city - The Millennial Group.
- The Millennial Group as a whole.
- The Everymen Brigade, the city's mercenary hero team.
- Black Magic, the male hero, the city's current heartthrob.

Black Magic had captured her interest without much difficulty. He was enigmatic, charismatic and quite intelligent. That was...more than most of the heroes she’d seen rise in the media. He didn’t seem too keen on the attention, but he wielded it as if it was second nature. She admired that skill.

Lenora felt that his powers would compliment hers quite well. Not to extent of her mother and father, but enough to be impressive and effective. She would like to speak with him, just to get firsthand experience of how he actually was to people when the camera wasn’t on him.

Black Magic blazed on to the scene after single-handedly protecting the city from a foreign terrorist incursion last year. Even though his origin remained completely shrouded in mystery, Black Magic was currently Millennia City's most famous solo hero - especially after receiving the most recent Hero of Tomorrow grant, which was the most esteemed honor that could be bestowed upon any aspiring hero.

It didn't hurt that Black Magic was absolutely gorgeous, either.

Lenora had always been fine being alone, especially since she hadn't had much choice in the matter. Still, if given a chance to work alongside Black Magic...

Chapter II - The heist

The next morning brought on a new sense of urgency. She did receive the money for the first job, but she was still far away from making the month's rent. Paid jobs, especially well paid ones, were hard to come by these days. There were many heroes all vying for glory and the line at the Agency was long. It was a good decision perhaps, that she let her name out into the world on her first task, even a little recognition could help.

In fact, Lenora would have been able to afford her rent for the month, had she not splurged on a new upgrade for her hero suit (after all every hero had to have one in order to look the part). So she installed...

- Aerodynamic curves and small wings on the back fro maximum speed.
- A rocket-backpack for more precise and stronger energy channeling.
- Large metal wristbands, that allow better energy blasts.

Lenora had purchased a pair of large metal wristbands, to help better control her blasts. She had always been more unstable with the blasts of energy part of her powers. She decided that having help was a good idea, especially if she wanted to avoid an incident like her parents.

Dressed up and ready for the new day, Lenora had no contract currently going, but she had plenty of time to explore the city and perhaps pick up a thing or two on her own. But, she had an ace in her sleeve too.

When her parents went into hiding, left alone in a huge city, Lenora had one person she could rely on at all times. Jane Radcliffe, a woman slightly older than Lenora, working at the Agency, she took a liking to her right away. She did not have a power of her own, but she was always deeply interested in the lives of powered heroes. She did not have a position that would be of utmost importance so she could secure a job for Lenora at all times, but she could rummage through some data in order to get her something useful on the side.

- Call Jane.
- Patrol the streets of Millennia City.
- Stay at home.

Lenora looked in the mirror, watching as the faintly silver-blue material of her skin-tight suit glistened in the sunlight. The gloves were fingerless, so she could actually use things when she was in her suit. Parts, such as the outer leg panels and her inner thighs, were a royal blue. They had a hexagonal pattern, which showed only when she moved a certain way. The zip at the front was kept just above her cleavage, but she could bring it up to her throat if she needed. She even had a hood, which she kept back from her face.
She even had a mask, which covered her mouth and nose. It looked vaguely like a porcelain doll, apart from the material being pale silver and the lips being painted a dark, almost black, blue.

Lenora smiled to herself, before unhooking the mask and letting it sit against her chest. The soft noise of her black combat boots, which were over the knee, echoed through the small flat as she started to call Jane.

Jane picked up right away, her face appearing holographically in front of Lenora.

Right now, she looked a bit surprised to see her, probably because she had never seen the Quantum costume before.

"I almost did not recognize you there." Jane said, traces of her British accent still present despite years of living in Millennia City. "I meant to call you as well. Check your email for a congratulations-on-finally-getting-started present." She added, looking her over. "And just so you know, that costume makes your waist look bloody enormous."

- Answer.

“I’ll be sure to do that after this call. It’s lovely to see you, by the way.”
Lenora smiled at Jane, before frowning and looking down at her waist. She poked it a few times, stretching this way and that to get a better look.
“Are you sure? I mean...you have any idea how to fix it?”

Lenora shook her head. She couldn’t get distracted by the idea that she didn’t look that awesome in her suit.
“I did call for a reason. I would adore your help in finding a job.”
A charming smile and a cock of a hip.
“And I’ll even take you out for dinner. Just so we can catch up properly. If you’re alright with that, of course.”

"I'm just kidding, El." Jane laughed, placing a hand over her mouth. At Lenora's request, she gave her a look, one eyebrow raised. "Do we know each other so well that we read each other's minds now? Have we come to that point?" She grinned. "I certainly think you have been owing me that dinner for quite some time now. And I do have a very good tip for you." She winked. "I have to run now, but I'll call you back."

And she hung up without giving her a chance to respond. Such was Jane's style, always busy, and always snarky.

Jane's present and her tip turned out to be the same thing. Just when she hung up, her holo projector displayed an email about the most recent open-for-all case.

It has been sponsored by Rexford Schillers, city's wealthiest playboy. Turns out Rexford recently held a charity gala at his townhouse for the Powered Orphan Fund. The party was a smashing success but the next day Rexford woke up to find one of his most prized possessions had been stolen. A party guest managed to get past the considerable security measures and steal a valuable artifact: The Gravitas, a mysterious rod rumored to have hidden powers.

What little was known about The Gravitas made it one of a kind, highly valuable and potentially dangerous. The police were looking into the theft but Rexford wanted the artifact back so badly that he has opened the case up to any Powered Hero…

…with a reward of $150,000.

With such a large reward at stake, along with inevitable media coverage surrounding the high-profile case, Lenora knew the competition on that one was going to be fierce. And she was just a rookie.

- You still want that money.
- You would enjoy the press coverage.
- You want to get the Gravitas back so it doesn't fall into wrong hands.

Lenora looked at the email, her lower lip between her teeth. It was a lot of money and she could help her family with it, but she also didn’t want the Gravitas to fall into the wrong hands. She would do the job without question, because of those reasons.

Even if she was still a rookie, she could do this case. If not for herself and her own needs, but for her family, who could use a good portion of the reward money.

“Well...I’m going to be busy.”
She smirked, before putting on the metal wristbands and zipping her suit all the way up and pulling her hood forward.

She began to head out.

That artifact was a major public hazard and it was her duty as a hero to keep the threat contained.

Unfortunately, the only clue available on this case was a photo of the suspected thief who was an unnamed guest at the gala. The photo featured a man dressed in an expensive suit and wearing a mask themed after a Powered hero turned rock star. To match his mask, the thief's suit was lined with green stripes and his fingertips were painted yellow.

But then a thought hit her heard.

His fingertips were yellow! This was a very important detail that no one else was bound to know the significance behind….

When her parents went into hiding, her mother was desperate to use her sound abilities in a different way. So she started infusing everyday objects with song until she eventually moved to live being, like plants. Under a different name and through her line of trusted friends, she started selling them to support their life out of the view of public. One of her biggest sales was a species of orchids that sang classic operas. It took her years to achieve it, but there was one flaw in the design. If you touched one of these orchids, it turned your fingertips a different color, depending on the opera it was trained to sing.

Lenora's mom sold these orchids exclusively to one downtown high-rise building. This meant that if the thief's fingertips were painted yellow from her orchids, Lenora knew exactly where he lived. Only the penthouse apartment got the yellow Carmen orchids.

That was the reason Jane sent her the case listing - she also knew about the orchid imprinting. She must have seen the thief's fingertips in the case photo and waited on the information, until Lenora was fully equipped to deal with it.

--

Lenora leaped off the roof in the direction of the yellow-orchid penthouse. This was a very big case.

The orchid apartment was in central downtown, so her flight over will be super short. It was also good this thief could afford a penthouse because it will be pretty easy for her to access it by flight.

Her first priority was finding The Gravitas, but catching the thief would be an added bonus. How will she enter the apartment?

- Hover near the window to see if anyone is inside.
- Break into the apartment and search it.

Lenora focused on the window, fingers just brushing the glass as she hovered at the corner of it. She didn't want to break in just yet, because she wasn't sure if there was someone inside or not. She didn't want to be caught, especially not before she pinpointed who the thief was and got the Gravitas back. She focused, watching for any hint of movement.

As the high-rise came into view, she could already see mom's yellow orchids on the balcony.

She dropped down along the wall, trying to keep out of sight - a building like that was bound to have anti-Powered security measures. Hovering close to the penthouse's window, she peered into the living room to see if anyone was home….

And she was face to face with a man standing inside the apartment, inches away from the glass!

It was definitely the thief from the case photo, right down to the yellow-stained fingertips. Currently, he looked far less regal and far more menacing, with overgrown stubble and long, greasy hair. But the thief thought fast - he whipped out a handgun and pointed it directly at Lenora.

- Throw him with an energy blast, if you think it's now stable enough.
- Fly up or down, if you feel fast enough to evade a bullet.
- Form an energy shield around you, though you've never done it before.

Lenora's eyes widened and she started swearing softly as she raised one hand. She wasn't confident in her ability to create a shield, she'd have to practice before she used it against an actual gun. She pressed her palm to the glass and shot out at a blast, before ducking down. She didn't feel like getting shot today.

There was a loud sound as the glass wall separating Lenora from the thief shattered and when she looked through the window again, the thief's gun laid on the floor, melted beyond repair.

A loud alarm begun to sound and the thief made a run for it. Luckily, with the glass window now broken, she was able to fly right after him.

The thief led her into the master bedroom suite and as soon as she entered she saw the teleportation unit.

- Disable the unit with an energy blast.
- Disable the unit by ripping out the cords.
- Disable the thief with an energy blast.
- Tackle the thief to the ground.
