Theme

You are Simon Nadek, a recent college graduate with a degree in history. Your life while not the worst has also not been the best. You did not have the same advantages as some others or found yourself overlooked at times for opportunities. Perhaps this is because of your own laziness or a failure on the part of others to bother to give a damn. In either case, you have your degree and find that perhaps staying in college would have been best. Instead you find yourself doing research into a strange old house the locals call the Ticking House. Some people say it is haunted, others say it is unnatural. Several of the oldest people in the city don't recall that ancient house ever being there, yet younger citizens say it always has been.

Unable to resist the urge to find something worthwhile for your research on this strange home, you have entered it. You sadly did not check about the stability of the floor. You find yourself falling into darkness and unconsciousness. The sound of clicking is all you hear as your consciousness swims about you in a blur. You are in a chair and before you is a desk behind which an odd figure is slumped over. It appears to be a man-sized marionette? It has been carved to be seemingly in a suit, dark lines flowing up into the shadows above from various contact points. It looks worn with time, a quill clutched in a wooden hand as it remains motionless, hanging from its black lines in its seating position, its head slumped and hiding its face in shadow. Light seems to be coming from a few oil lamps that only recently have been lit.

Your eyes are starting to focus as you still hear the ticking. Looking around you see the room is made of shoddy wooden paneling behind which you catch glimpses of clockwork gears ticking and moving. You look around to find there is a door behind you. There is also a door behind the marionette's seat. Neither door seems to have a lock on it as you look around. You could go either way. As you move to stand from your seat, the marionette seems to stir. Its lines quiver and shift to pull it upright to reveal the carved face of a man. His features fixed in an ominous smile as a segment of his mouth like a nutcracker starts to move and it seemingly speaks. Its teeth seem unpleasantly sharp and metallic, having been hidden by wooden lips until it spoke.

"Your name, please?" Its voice was oddly cultured and hollow as its free hand reaches down to pull a book from the desk and set it out, opening a page with names on it. It dips its quill into a dusty inkwell that curiously still had ink in it. Its glass eyes focus on you, glowing with a eerie pale inner green light. It reminds you of a lawyer with its manner and appearance... creepiness aside.
