Clockwork Heart

[1] You seem to know quite a lot about what happened and what will happen - if I need answers in the future, is there a way to contact you?

We went with the love-interest theme - might as well try to get a phone number or something along those lines.

The girl was ready to leave. You could tell by her stance. One of her foot was almost lifted above the ground, the other a step forward, as if she was a professional marathon runner preparing for a hundred meter dash. You knew you won’t be able to catch once she leaves, after all, you still are sluggish due to your previous state, not to mention the beating you received a few moments ago.

Thus, you decided to stop her.

As soon as she lifted her foot behind and arched forward, you grabbed her by the arm, forcefully stopping her before she could take off and sprint away.

“Wha-”, she gasps. Then, she took at look at what had stopped her and caught sight of your arm, slowly leading to you. Turning around, to face you, she shrugged off your arm with such ease. “I thought you won’t let anyone know I’m here?”

“I won’t.”, you say. “It’s just…”

“Just what?”, she asks.

“You know a lot of things. About what’s happened to me, and what will happen next.”, you continue. “Do you, perhaps, have the same strange ability that I do?”

“Are you serious? No.”, she answers imprudently, as she turns away from you. “Is that all? Then, goodb-”

“Then, at least give me a way to contact you. I want, no, I need to know what is happening to me. And why. I need to know everything about it. The ticking noises, my death - everything. If what they said was true, that I’m dying, then I at least want to know if I can fight this disease I carry.”, you say, your resolve emanating from you like water overflowing from a fountain.

“If you think I’m giving you my number out of pity, I won’t. You don’t need to sweat that stuff, you won’t die. Besides, I’m quite sure we’ll meet again soon.”, she says.

“At least, your name?”, you insist.

“Roxy.”, the words ring through your ears, as she rushes off to the distance, leaving you alone in the empty room.

After a few moments, you hear the door slowly creak as it open. You hurried back to where you came from, but you were too slow. The moment you arrived there, the two people from earlier - your seatmate and the blond boy, along with the nurse. They were surprised to see you standing, let alone walking once again. After all that’s happened, you should be staying still on the bed. Your recovery time, for some reason, is far quicker than that of an average person.

Of course, they’ll need some explanation from you first.

[1] Make up an excuse.

[1] There is no need to talk about Roxy - at least not with the nurse present. If the other two know us as well as it seems like, throw in a hint for them that we'll be telling more later on - just to make sure that when they understand it's nothing more than an excuse, they won't be completely pissed off. They care for us, we shouldn't snub them right away.

You laugh awkwardly, as you inch back to the bed. Then, the thought finally came to your mind. Why not just tell them the truth that you found out about Roxy? Nah, that’s a pretty bad choice. She’s beaten you up before, what makes you think you won’t be wrecked by that girl the second time, especially when you’ve broken your promise - to not let any know about her and what transpired in your encounter earlier.

So, you’ve decided to go the less riskier way - to lie and try to get away with it.

“I’m not gonna lie.”, you say. They paid attention to you with great detail. “I was trying to get out of here, but I couldn’t find the door.”

The girl puffed and tried to hold back her laughter. Somehow, she found it funny. The blond boy sighed. “Seriously, dude?”, he said. The nurse, however, kept her eyes on you. She seems to be a bit suspicious of you.

After a short moment, the three approached you, with the nurse coming in first.

“How are you standing already?”, she says curiously. “Your entire body took a strain when you passed out earlier.”

“I guess I recovered quickly.”, you say jokingly.

“Let me take take a good look at you.”, the nurse says. You have no qualms about that, and comply to her every order. After a number of tests, the results showed that somehow, you’ve become quite well, aside from the beating your received from Roxy earlier.

“That’s unusual.”, the nurse continues. “A normal person, let alone a young man such as you, won’t be able to recover from such a state so quickly.”

“If I heard it right, I’m better now.”, you say. “So, can I leave the infirmary and go back to my regular activities?”

“But these results, these readings…”, the nurse stared at the tests’ results. “These are not normal! Something might still be wro-”

“He’s ok, and that’s what matters. R-right?”, the girl interfered.

“Well, yes.”, the nurse answered. “But these results are unbelievable. And there’s still the unidentified ailment he carries. He should-”

“Then how about this...”, the blond boy says, backing both you and the girl up. “You let Victor here go back to his regular activities, but he’ll go back here frequently for check-ups. Let’s say once a day. That way, he won’t be left behind in the infirmary doing nothing for days, and you’ll get to clarify and validate your test results.”

“Hmm.”, the nurse responded. Silence filled the air for about a minute, until the nurse decided to agree to this condition.

Finally, you get to leave the infirmary. You walked for a while with the two, and had random chatters with them along the way.

Then, all of a sudden, the school bell rang. It must have been an hour already. The girl tapped you, which in turn, caused you to face her. She looked as if she needed to say something.

“Yes?”, you asked.

“I’ll be leaving now for my Music class.”, she says as she pointed to the blond boy beside you. “If you need to contact me, Carl knows my number.”

“O-ok.”, you say, confused by what just occurred.

“See you!”, she says as she hurries off to the distance.

“Bye.”, you and Carl say in unison. At last, you knew the name of one of these people you’ve been with. Carl, the blond boy. Wait a minute. What is exactly the girl’s relation to this Carl? No, better yet, what is your relation to him?

You were frozen deep in thought. Of course, Carl noticed this, and didn’t take another second to ask you.

“What’s the problem?”

[1] "Its Nothing, just wandering through some thoughts. Shall we go?"

If Roxy is as dangerous as she seems, it wouldn't be smart to reveal her. After all she does  have a bit dirt on Victor that I'm sure all will agree not to be common knowledge.

[1] "Everything's fine, really - just a bit thought-provoking to see her that worried. Thanks for getting me out of the infarmery, by the way, almost thought the nurse would chain me to the bed to keep me in reach."

No need to talk about Roxy or our lost memories (yet) - but talking about our greenish-speaking friend and the infarmery might provoke him to say something of interest to us. In fact, pretty much everything he says should be interesting at the moment.

“Thanks for getting me out of the infirmary, by the way, almost thought the nurse would chain me to the bed to keep me in reach."

Carl taps you on the shoulder, and smiles. “Don’t worry about that. It’s what friends are for.” He then, inches towards you and his smiles turns into a malicious smirk. His eyes now shimmered in greed and glutton. His voice, now in a menacing tone, said, “And by that I mean you’re gonna have to pay me back.”

You take a step back. Surprised by the sudden change of this person, you exclaim, “What?”

Carl chuckles. He gazes at you once more, his look turning back to normal. “Come on. At least treat me to lunch.”

You shook your head. “Nah. I’m not spending my money to satisfy your hunger.”

He, then, arced his head side-wards. His eyes were now showing his seriousness. Once more with a menacing tone, he spoke. “It’s either that or you tell me what really happened back there. I know when you’re lying, Victor. We’ve been roommates for five years now.”

Finally, the big reveal. This Carl was your roommate for five years? That’s strange. You certainly don’t remember anything about him. He does seem familiar, however. Maybe your mind’s just messed up because of the ticking noises, and it will soon get better. Hopefully that’s the case, and you’ve not lost your memories due to some strange occurrence. Daily Check-up - You must now do daily check-ups at the infirmary.

Step 1): First of all: check if we have any money with us to pay for lunch. If yes, continue with step two. If not, repeat step 1 twice before ashamedly asking Carl if he can help us out, we'll give him the money back later on. We'll have money somewhere, right? Then (hopefully) continue with step 2.

Step 2): Treat Carl to lunch, though admitting that we weren't honest so far. Promise him to tell everything at a later time, with fewer people and possibly the girl (do we have a name yet? If not, scratch that comment, would be a bad idea to mention her not by her name) around, as it doesn't really seem to make sense yet. If he's really our roommate, he'll be fine with that. If not, let's hope we had to do step 1 thrice.

The way Roxy spoke earlier, we sadly won't have the opportunity to ever tell him the whole thing, at least in the near future. But I'd like to be as honest as possible at this point, without revealing our meating. Roxy said herself that we should prepare, and our best preparation at the moment might be to keep her hidden while keeping those close around that care for us.

As you think on what to do next, you insert your hand into your rear pocket, searching for something. A wallet perhaps? A phone? Close enough. It was your eCard, a specially designed bank card that is able to show you your current balance. You took it out of your pocket and placed it just in front of you.

The eCard is blue and slim, and obviously, glossed as ever. The front, instead of having the info on the owner, only has the bank logo as well as the account number. The owner’s signature is located and engraved on the lower right portion in a very small size. The back, on the other hand, seems to be a touch-triggered screen, which displays the account’s current balance, the last expense, as well as the last deposit.Obviously, the back of the card is facing you. And your fingers were touching it. Details began to slowly appear on the small screen.

Current Balance: $50,431.76Last Expense: $10.00 (02-23-2041)Last Deposit: $105.00 (02-21-2041)

You give off a sigh of relief. “Alright, Carl. Let’s go get some lunch.”, you say as you placed the card in the pocket of your shirt. Your blond roommate smiles and happily goes along.

The two of you savor your food, but Carl seems to be enjoying it more than you do. Why wouldn’t he, it was free. A few minutes after you finished, Carl leans towards you, but not in an intimate way, rather in a somewhat sinister manner, like how two shady people whisper secrets to each other.

“By the way, Victor.”, Carl says. “How did you meet Sarah?”

“Who?”, you ask, confused for a short moment.

“You know? Sarah? Sarah Sullivan? The girl who was with us in the infirmary?”, Carl continues.

“Ah.”, you reply. “She’s my seatmate. She’s kinda cute, isn’t she?”

“Well, yeah.”, Carl answers. “She’s top-tier, Victor. Lucky you.”

“Top tier?”, you say curiously. “What do you mean?”

“Don’t spread the word. Most of the boys have been ranking girls of our batch. And Sarah one of those at the top.”, Carl says.

“Huh.”, you say. “Guess I am lucky indeed. But won’t we get in a bad situation if any of the girls find out about this?”

“That’s why you gotta keep it secret.”, Carl leans away from you, with a wink.

The two of you stand up, and prepare to leave for your next classes.

“Carl.”, you say. “I gotta tell you and Sarah something. It’s about the infirmary. But it’ll have to be at a more private location. Can’t risk others knowing about this.”

Carl, however, was already rushing away. “Alright!”, he shouted. “I’ll hear it later in the dorm after class!”

However, as you slowly walk on the school grounds, heading towards the dorm, which is a few minutes away, you began to have second thoughts.
