Clockwork Heart

Victor Frost

You were walking on the calm streets of Louisiana, in the city of Alexandria. It was just another regular day - the sun was up and shining upon the world, the birds chirped and flew at the clear skies. But somehow, you felt as if it was too good to be true. Too peaceful, to be precise. There was nothing but the warm wind blowing against your skin, giving you the sensation of a calming embrace.

Then, all of a sudden it happened.

You died. Almost.

A stray bullet had pierced your chest, and your heart. You blood gushed out vigorously, as you felt your life flow out of you. You felt no pain, only regret. Regret that you were not able to reconcile. That you were not able to do things you could have done.

Your sight began to turn dark, until you saw nothing but the pitch black realm of silence. The state of being in between life and death, as they would say. There, you remembered everything that had occurred in your life before you got shot. Your kindergarten days, your confession to your middle school crush, the fights you had in your high school days, and the day you became independent. The day you left your home for college.

Ah, yes. Today was supposed to be your last day at your neighborhood. That’s why you were strolling. You had your stuff packed up, and you were leaving in the next three hours. You were basically wasting your time away before you went to the state university.

Then, out of the blue, you got shot. And died. Almost.

In this pitch black, silent realm, an unfamiliar voice began to resonate. The memories you remembered suddenly faded away.

“Hey, wake up.”, it said.

You are confused, and surprised.

“Wake up.”, it spoke once more.

The voice grew louder with every repetition of the same few words - to wake up. You are dead, are you not? You got shot. In the chest. Through the heart. And now you are dead. So, why is there a voice asking you to wake up? Is this just some dream? A nightmare?

“Wake up, Victor.”, the voice said, now with a clearer tone and pitch. Easily identifiable to belong to a female person.

This led to more confusion. How did the voice know your name? Then, you feel shaking - like an earthquake. Your world was trembling furiously.

And then, you woke up. That's good. You very much preferred to be alive and sleeping than to be dead anyway.

You lifted your head from what seems to be a table. You jerked your head to the left, and saw a white wall blocking your way. Then you turned to the right. You were still a bit groggy, but you knew that what was before you was a female. After all, the voice that woke you up belonged to a female.

“I’m sorry for waking you up, but we’re already in class.”, she said.

Your sight finally cleared up. The girl was pretty, but she was not that over-the-top beauties that an entire class would hit on. Her black, silky hair was tied in a ponytail that gracefully traced her smooth, fair skin. Her eyes were of a clear, cerulean color, which stared at you with much concern. Her lips were, uhh, let’s not go there. You’ve just woken up after all, and you still don’t know this girl.

She looked plain, but beautiful. She wore a clean, simple half-sleeved shirt. We won’t go further down, that’s inappropriate somewhat, but we’ll say she wears decent clothing.

“And the professor wouldn’t like to see you sleeping. She’s a bit strict.”, she continued.

You were still staring at her. Intensely, at that. She’s beginning to feel uncomfortable. It would be preferable if you did something about that.

[1] Inquire on how she knows your name and her identity.

[2] Thank her for doing such a thing and carry on.

[3] Flirt with the girl you don’t even know yet.

[4] Laugh stupidly nervously, then turn your attention to the lecture.

Victor Frost

“Thank you.”, you say to her with a short nod, then you turned your attention towards the ongoing class.

There were people fully immersed into the lecture, with them writing notes and even taking pictures. Some were just like you, completely out of it, and had better things to do - they toyed with their phones and other gadgets, and a few were doodling random things on their papers. It seems that they did not have the guts to take a nap like you did.

The girl beside you was somewhat in the middle. She took notes, but she also gave her attention to other things, such as her tablet. You thanking her was somehow unexpected, so she seems to be a bit flustered. The sight was a bit funny, so you held back your laughter. But you were bad at that, so a few snickers got past you.

It only made the situation worse. The girl beside you got distracted and started to feel embarrassed about her being flustered.

And you got the professor’s attention. Wonderful.

“Mr. Frost.”, she says out loud.

“Yes, ma’am?”, you reply.

“It seems like you already know what the lecture is all about.”

“Ah, no ma’am, I-”, you tried to defend yourself from a teacher’s surprise attack, only to be talked down.

“Why don’t you continue the lecture for me?”, she says. You can easily recognize the animosity in her voice. Apparently, you have angered her. The other students were staring at you. Your seatmate was too.

You’ve been put into the spotlight on the first class of the first day. This will certainly affect your life here in the university. You know you have to do something, or else you’ll be constantly verbally assaulted by this professor for the rest of the year.

You take a look at the presentation, and you see a few bits and bobs about world history - exploration, trades, cultures, etc. Some of the words that get your attention are the first circumnavigation, the Spanish and the Portuguese, and something about the eastern and western hemisphere.

[1] Talk about the first circumnavigation.

[2] Talk about the relation between the Spanish and the Portuguese.

[3] Try to talk your way out of the situation.

[4] Apologize for disturbing the lecture.

[5] Talk about the first circumnavigation, talk about the relation between the Spanish and the Portuguese, then, if the teacher is impressed, try to talk your way out of the situation.

(I'm a bit of the opinion that trying to pick more than two options together is kinda like cheating. XD)

You're gonna get in hella trouble for not apologizing like you're clearly supposed to, but you know this shit. [5] Talk about relations between the Spanish and the Portuguese of that time period. If you don't get cut off, continue on to circumnavigation.

If you don't like me voting for 3 options @Reinhardt, just default my vote to this.

You have my vote! I'd make a more detailed write in about this, but I don't think it'd be good for me to try to detail too much what he says. xD

Let's go with the write-in above. Since we disturbed the lecture anyway, we might as well try to share our superior knowledge with the others.

You remain silent for a short moment, as you gather your thoughts. Somewhere deep inside that seemingly big brain of yours, you have info on this matter stored up and ready for use. You just need to be able to use it.

All of a sudden, you hear loud ticking noises. The clock in the room is digital so it would not make such a sound. And you’re pretty sure that nobody would bring a clock that ticks so loudly in school, that’d be just weird. But what’s really weird here is that as the ticking noise plays in the background, you remember all the lessons you’ve had, all the research you’ve done, all the info you’ve learned on this matter.

Then the ticking stopped, when you’ve gathered up your thoughts. You took a deep breath before you spoke.

“Well, dear Professor and classmates, back in the old times, Spain and Portugal had a pretty big competition between them. Portugal was considered as the richest, and Spain was ambitious. So, when the search for the great spices began, Portugal and Spain were one of the first to set sail. Portugal discovered the Cape of Good Hope, with their route to the south east. But things got bad when they tried to go further - they began to have difficulties. Their exploration was delayed.”

You took another deep breath. You tried not to discuss with great detail, because you were lazy to point out specifics and what not.

“Spain, knowing that Portugal has advanced with a route, decided not to take the same path. They set sail to the west - a so-called bad idea. Apparently, during that time, they believed that the world was flat, and that sailing to the east would make you go beyond the boundaries of the world and disappear. Spain discovered the land of the Americans, so it was not really a bad idea. But they did not gain what they wanted - the spices, so they returned to their homeland.”

You took a quick glimpse around. They were focused on you. On your discussion. You need to make this fast or you’ll gain a different kind of fame. You don’t want that either, you just want to be a simple student. So, you’ve decided to end it quicker than you intended.

“When the word spread out about Spain’s discovery, Portugal grew jealous. They demanded the rights over the discovery, assuming that they used their route. A painful struggle occurred between the two until Spain proved the reality of the lands on the west. Then, they formed a treaty which separated half of the world to the two. Spain would get to travel to the west, and Portugal would get the east. The tension between the two lessened, but the competition between them grew.”

You stopped speaking. The professor coughed. “Well, Mr. Frost, I commend you for having studied in advance for the lecture, but you should know that in my class, you should pay attention. I will not tolerate your actions for a second time.”, she said, then continued the lecture from where you left off.

That went well. You were expecting to be scolded.

“Wow.”, your seatmate said to you in a lower volume. “You’re great at world history!”

“No, not really. I just had a grasp on what she was talking about.”, you humbly reply.

“Well, that was still great! I didn’t expect you to do that at all.”, she continued.

[1] Try to end the conversation.

[2] Boast about how great you really are.

[3] Divert the attention towards the lecture.

[4] Write-in.

New Ability Gained!

Boundless Recollection - Gather info from your memory, no matter what the date is.

Hey guys, if there's anything inaccurate or wrong with the Spain-Portugal nonsense I've spouted, please don't get mad over it. I just pulled this out of memory, lol. Anyways, I'll now be discussing how Clockwork Heart abilities work.

There will be occasions wherein the option to use an ability will be presented.

"[X] Ability"

The voting for ability usage will be different from regular votes. So you can both choose an normal option and an ability at the same time. However, ability options will only be done if the majority (50%+1 of group, in this case 4 people) vote for it. There will also be times where there will be no ability option, but they can still be voted for, so always be on the watch.

Alright, that's that for now.

[4] - Divert her attention towards the lecture before using Boundless Recollection to remember who she is. Or at least, find out if we know her at all.

I'll join the group of yours voting for that write-in - well thought-out.

Victor Frost

You don’t want your attention to be called once more by the professor, but this girl - your seatmate will most likely get you there. So, you’ve decided to make sure that such a thing won’t happen.

You turn to the front, and make yourself look as if you are focused on the lecture. You even squinted your eyes once to make it a lot more convincing. “Well, me either.”, you answer back in a rather condescending tone. “I guess paying attention to the lecture is really rewarding. You should do it too, you know.”

“Oh, yes.”, she replied. You could faintly sense some sort of embarrassment from her words. “The lecture.” She turned to the front and began to pay attention to the lecture, that she started to continue her note-taking.

You then, began to wonder. Now, of all times. Who is this girl? Do you even know her? Maybe, just maybe, something about her is hidden deep in your memory. The ticking sound slowly grew in volume as your attention drifted away from the lecture. Your eyes slowly closed on their own.

Various remnants of old memories pass through you. You feel them. You remember them, although not completely and accurately. After all, you were searching for a specific one - a memory which involves your seatmate. However, it seems that you could not find it. Minutes had already passed, and you only could find remnants of random memories.

Then all of a sudden, you accidentally remembered a scar in your life. Your death. It was exactly like the dream you had earlier, but this time, it felt real. You could feel the air brush past your skin, you could smell the scents of the flowers from nearby. And most importantly, you could feel the pain when the shot pierced you. You grasped your chest as you experienced the horrifyingly pain of dying. You couldn’t say a word, nor could you do anything. All that’s left was for the pain to leave, and for your final moment to come. Then, you blacked out.

The moment you woke up, you were lying down on a bed in the infirmary. The girl sat on a chair beside you, whilst the professor was busy talking with the nurse. A young man, presumably of the same age as you, stood on the other side.

“You’re awake. You really had us there, pal.”, he said.“Thank goodness.”, your seatmate added. She, then called the attention of the professor, who checked if you were well, then left immediately with the nurse after warning you of eating health-risky food. Only the three of you were left there. However, you had the feeling that you were being watched. That it was not only the three of you there.

[1] Ask what happened.

[2] Ask who the two people are.

[3] Write-in.
