In the meanwhile, the bullets coming from Eric and Vincent only resulted in misses, or no effect. From there range they were at, the gangster they were facing had enough time to turn his head to protect his eyes from the bullets. It was abundantly clear that conventional small arms weren't going to do the job. However, the distraction was exactly what Lazarus needed. All the bullets kept the eXceeded gangster from being able to look at Lazarus.

In the brief moment, where Vincent and Eric attempted a reload, the fire breather pointed his head towards Lazarus and bellowed out a stream of orange flames. They were well on track to to swallow Lazarus up and give him some severe burns when Laz opened fire at the fire breather's face. The more powerful rifle cartridges forced the man completely redirect his flames and even drew some blood from the side of his head. While the gangster was still recovering from the bullets, Lazarus slid behind one of the cars. Lazarus' disappearance from the fire breather's field of vision caused visible annoyance in the gangster's face as he halted his flames. Undeterred, the man began to take a deep breath, drawing in the air around him, seemingly preparing for his next attack.

The Raider took advantage of the break in between the flames and made a final dash towards his target. The fire breather noticed Lazarus and halted his preparation to focus on Lazarus. He drew a pistol from his belt and began to aim at the Raider approaching him. However, before the gangster could get a bead on his target, Lazarus already closed the distance, shoving the barrel of his gun into the man's neck with one hand and grabbing the arm of the man with his left hand.

He had already charged his hand with a "Bookmark" with one minute of time. Upon making physical contact with the man, Lazarus placed the "Bookmark" and triggered it, freezing the man in time for the next minute. From there, Lazarus worked quickly and pointed his gun's underslung attachment at the man's side and fired a syringe filled with an NRO solution. It would prevent him from using his powers for several hours at the very least. That combined with a pair of reinforced zip ties will put the fire breather out of commission.

In Abaddon's skirmish with the spider lady, the woman taunted the SERAPH relentlessly, as if she was a predator playing it its prey. Abaddon's lance could not match the range of the barbed tips of the woman's eight spider legs. Jab after jab tore at Abaddon, trying to shred him into pieces. However, no matter how many strikes she landed, Abaddon's skin never broke. "Ma'am, I am going to give you one chance: surrender, or I will kill you."

"That's funny. I was just about to ask you the same thing,"
Neither his words, nor that fact that she could deal no damage dissuaded the woman from insulting his age and inability to hold up during the fight and continuing her strikes. After a while, the woman got tired of playing and charged at Abaddon with her legs in front, intending to drive them right into his face.

However, at the last moment, Abaddon drove his lance into the woman's chest, right before the legs reached his face. That was strange, the lance wasn't long enough earlier, but now it could keep her held back and with room to spare? The spider lady didn't care, letting Abaddon know with a laugh, a smug look, and a snarky reply, "Oh? You finally got it up to land a shot? I didn't expect someone as old as you to be able to, but I'm gonna kill you just the sam-"

The woman's laugh was cut short by a violent cough laced with blood. Looking down at the lance, she saw that several tendrils had sprouted from the lance pierced her. Each one writhed their way inside of her torso and began to use her own flesh to grow the tendrils. She tried to scream, but the tendrils quickly pierced her lungs and spread to her other internal organs. As Abaddon withdrew the lance, the tendrils stayed in the woman's body and began to harden into a chitinous rock hard substance.

Over the course of a few seconds, the chitin erupted from the woman's body, having already absorbed her flesh and bones and now breaching her skin. She was only just barely alive; her body was already shutting down and indescribable pain filled the few nerve endings she had left. Though she could not talk, she does her best to beg for a swift end.

"Too late for repentance." The SERAPH looked at her with cold, unfeeling eyes. He reached out his hand and placed it on her head. He squeezed until her skull collapsed. Upon the woman's death, tendrils shot out from Abaddon's hand and began to wrap themselves around the chitin covered corpse. The tendrils wound themselves tighter and tighter, while seemingly sucking the material up its length into Abaddon. Moments later, the tendrils retracted leaving not a single trace of the body.

The SERAPH turned his gaze to the other combatants. Gabrielle had already killed her target, Lazarus was incapacitating his, but the third one...was someone he didn't know. The woman whom Lazarus described to him to be the leader of Team 73 match her description perfectly-raven hair, pale skin, and black leather. That woman looked to be in an interesting situation, trying to fight an eXceeded by herself without any powers. The slightest slip up would result in her untimely death.

As the boy with the flying swords followed Shilo with his eyes, he got blindsided by Artemis' arrow. However, the arrow wasn't like a regular arrow, instead of sticking into the boy's flesh, it just went straight through his body. He gritted his teeth and grunted. Shilo's next move was anticipated by her opponent, as he ducked under the punch and stumbled back a few steps. Shilo was fast, but the eXceeded was much more desperate to survive. Adrenaline was surging through his system as he made a final attempt to gain the upper hand.

With a look of anger and pain in his remaining eye, the boy pointed his arm towards Shilo. All four of his double edged swords converged on the woman. Each of the four blades pointed themselves at Shilo's neck, with just a centimeter to spare. The teen let out a confident grin, any more moves from Shilo would be the end for the woman.

His confident grin soon melted off his face as he looked around to see two of his allies down for the count and the last one missing. His plan was to kill her, but with the way things were looking, killing Shilo would only result in his own death. He looked at Guardians and Team 73 with his one good eye as he pointed towards Shilo being held at blade point, "Not another move or she dies! Let me go, and I'll let her go!

Eric and Vincent knew and understood that the bullets weren’t going to be doing damage. That wasn’t the point of them after all. So they were undeterred by that and only kept them coming. Unless they were reloading, of course. When the eXeed’s attention turned onto Lazarus completely, Vincent stepped forward. He cocked the gun quickly, advancing upon the enemy and firing a few more shots at his head. He wasn’t as good a shot as Xander, but he was pretty decent. Of course, in what seemed like no time, with little effort, Laz had the fire breather completely under control. Without hesitation, the Team 73 Co-Leader turned his firearm on the eXeed that Abaddon was fighting, only to see her get impaled by his lance and then start to get absorbed.

The man didn’t have time to fully register the sight before he turned toward
Shilo’s opponent. The Team 73 Leader may have been the one in need of more help, but he also knew that she’d be more upset with him if he hadn’t made sure the other eXeed’s were under control before he offered his assistance. Eric had his gun trained on the sword wielding teen, finger off the trigger. He wasn’t ready to shoot yet.

Shilo’s punch had missed. That was fine. She landed easily twisting around to try another attack, only he had stumbled out of reach. Damn it, sometimes it sucked to be short. The woman’s eyes narrowed in anticipation as the swords surrounded her, but didn’t strike. Well that was just a mistake. The woman stood, watching for the right time. There! The teen made the second mistake of looking away for just a moment, gauging what had happened with his allies and to threaten her life for his freedom. Using the extra seven or so inches that the katar blade gave her, Shilo moved quickly. She pushed one of the swords on her right side up, with the tip of her own blade, the tip of the the sword catching her jaw as she didn’t have enough room to move out of the way without stepping into another sword.

In a fluid movement, the moment the sword blade gave her space,
Shilo stepped out of the deadly circle with a graceful twirl, gripped the hilt of the sword that she’d moved with both of her hands, and used the momentum of the twirl the bring the sword around hard against the eXeed’s neck.

The moment that Shilo moved, Vincent was already shooting. He had a few rounds left in his gun as was, and another clip in his pocket in case he needed it. Artemis had drawn another arrow back moments later and loosed it toward the enemy. Following suit with the others, Eric sidestepped until he was on the opposite side of Vincent, both men walking towards the teenage at each flank to draw attention away from Shilo as the Team Leader took advantage of the situation and cocked her left fist back for another punch. Once again, she triggered her katar, (of course she had one on each wrist), and struck toward the teenager’s eyes. She wouldn’t kill him, mostly because she was probably unable to, but unless one of the Guardian’s stepped in, she would fight until the teen surrendered or she was left dead or immobile.

[div class=header]POST[/div] Nightwisher Nightwisher

The sword wielding gangster wasn't prepared for Shilo's move. He didn't expect for her to knock his sword out of formation. He didn't expect for her to get out of his ring of blades without dying. He certainly didn't expect Shilo to take one of his own swords and turn it against him. The blade bit deep into the teen's neck before it struck bone. Normal blades wouldn't have been able to do the same damage, but it just so happened that his swords were a lot sharper than normal blades, which consequently made the task of cutting himself much easier. The strike made him fall to his knees and scream in pain and anger. Though he was beyond human capabilities, a sword to the neck does tend to be quite painful.

With Gabrielle and Abaddon beginning to surround him along Team 73, he was desperate. Very desperate. As Eric and Vincent fired at the kid, the eXceeded countered by arranging the blades around himself and whirling them in a circle to force everyone to stay back. However, with his focus on the two men and their bullets, he was taken unaware by Artemis armed with Gabrielle's hardlight bow. The piercing arrow put another hole in his body, causing him to bleed even more. The damage done still wasn't enough to put him out of commission. As he recovered from the arrow, Shilo had went in for another strike. He wasn't going to die to a measly human.

As Shilo threw her punch, he brought his two of his blades around once more to meet her arm. He wasn't content with just blocking her bladed fist-he wanted to make her pay. The two blade formed a crude scissor cut Shilo's arm just before the katar met his face. The scissor formation wasn't strong enough to completely cut through Shilo's arms, but it did cut into both bones in the arm. It wouldn't kill her, but it sure as heck meant that her arm was going to be out of commission for the rest of her life, even with current medical technology.

The teen wouldn't escape by injuring only one person though. There were the two people that just ended his friends', Gabrielle and Abaddon. He pulled the blades back from Shilo and sent two towards each of mercenaries, going straight from their heads. As the first two swords shot towards Gabrielle, a mirror flew in between her face and the swords. Immediately a pane of white, transparent material was projected from the mirror to shield Gabrielle. She wasn't even fazed by the blades that were struggling to kill her just centimeters away from her face. The other two swords shot straight for Abaddon and tried to embed themselves into his chest. Tendrils shot out from his chest and turned into the same hard chitin that made up his lance. The two plinked against the chitin to no effect as more tendrils shot out and wrapped themselves around the blades.

The two mercenaries gave the teen an apathetic look, as if there wasn't any humanity behind their eyes. In an instant, a tendril sprouted from Abaddon's lance and pierced the teen's chest while a bow appeared in Gabrielle's hands as another arrow made of light was let loose at the teen. The tendrils eagerly consumed the boy's body, turning his flesh and bones into a chitinous substance that violently erupted from the boy's skin, like a monster trying to tear its way out of its fleshy prison. Luckily for the boy, he did not live long to suffer as Gabrielle's arrow pierced through his head. Of course, a simple hole in the head wasn't enough. Gabrielle made sure he wouldn't be getting back up in this life. Her mirrors rearranged themselves to allow the arrow ricochet back and forth dozens of times over the course of just a few seconds. the end result: the boy was now short a head. When the boy was dead, Abaddon absorbed the body just like how he did with the spider woman.

Everything happened quickly, like a blur. But the Team 73 Leader was combat trained enough to gauge it all. She’d made a mistake. She should have backed off, but whether it was her own stubbornness or the idea that she was the only one within distance to do more damage, she wasn’t quite sure. The cost for that mistake was painful. Shilo pulled her arm away as the heavy hitters came in to finish the job, backing up as she felt her hand go completely numb. Her forearm was shrieking in pain. If she wasn’t so focused on Abaddon and Gabrielle doing their thing, she may have been screeching as well. But she had to focus on them, if she didn’t the pain would get worse and she didn’t want that.

“Lazarus,” Vincent called over to the head Guardian, nodding toward Shilo as he holstered his gun and hurried over. He kept back about four inches and made no move to touch her. Blood dripped from her gloved hand, splattering against the ground, staining it. The woman’s teal gaze was still on the scene in front of her as Vincent called Lazarus over to aid her. At the sound of Vince calling to the other group’s leader, Eric and Artemis turned their attention away from the eXeeds and to their Co-Leader, then their Leader. They hurried over as well, sure to keep their distance from Shilo as they tried to assess the situation.

“Damage to the radius and ulna, most likely permanent.” The Leader reported as she tried to shrug out of her leather jacket. Her focus was so stubbornly not on the wound that the rest of the Team knew it was bad, even without the report. “Vince,” the man hesitated for a moment before stepping forward and gently sliding the jacket off of her. Another sign it was bad, she’d asked for help.

Once the jacket was off, the mechanisms for her katar was visible, underneath them were carefully laid strips of athletic tape from her wrist to about an inch from her elbow. She pulled the katar mechanisms off, and then her glove, tossing them to the side before she started to strip the tape from her arm. She was breathing steadily; in through her nose, out through her mouth. But once her arm was bare of everything, she wasn’t quite sure what to do. Her teal gaze finally rested upon
    Lazarus. “Any ideas?”

Lazarus turned away from handling the fire breather just in time to see the scene play out just out of his reach. He sprinted towards scene, visibly disturbed by how they dispatched the final foe. They had even done it in a way that not even Lazarus could bring him back. The Marine reached the scene just as Abaddon devoured the last piece of the sword wielder. He could turn by the clock, but there was no body to turn the clock back on. However, his focus was soon pulled away from his mercenaries and to Shilo. He didn't need Vincent to tell him that something was wrong.

Before the Marine reached Shilo, he took a quick detour to his duffel bag to grab his first aid kit. He quickly sling his rifle over his shoulder to free his hands as set down the box and pulled on a pair of sterile gloves. He didn't touch her immediately, knowing her well enough that she avoided physical contact. From his initial analysis, it seemed that the swords had managed to cut quite deep, enough to expose some bone. It was nothing that Lazarus hadn't seen before; back when he served as a medic, he'd seen guys caught in IED blasts with the entire bone snapped and exposed. Things like this weren't pretty, but it was why Lazarus chose to be a medic. He would be able to help those willing to pay the ultimate price pay a lesser price. Cheating death. Softly, but firmly, Lazarus spoke in his "medic's voice" and told Shilo, "I'm going to hold your arm, Shilo. Don't worry, it will be okay. You'll live. I'll make sure of it. You tried to fight an eXceeded by yourself. You did well. I don't know any humans that could've held out as well as you."

Of course, that was all what he was trained to say. Keep talking to the patient to assess their situation, reassure them, and to remain aware of the patient's consciousness. Shilo was handling the wound better than most people Lazarus had met. He gingerly took Shilo's arm into his gloved hands so he could examine the wound close. It was as he thought. The blade cut to bone, but not all the way through. That was good. It meant that there wouldn't be need for an emergency amputation. "Okay, don't worry. The wound isn't bad. Two clean cuts to the radius and ulna, but I think you can already tell. If I was a regular EMT or Medic, I would put you on morphine and do my best to stop the bleeding, but I'm not a regular medic."

Lazarus smiled at Shilo and charged a two minute "Bookmark" into his hand, placing it onto Shilo's arm, and just her arm. He triggered the "Bookmark" on Shilo's arm and time began to rewind itself on her forearm. "Your arm will be fine. Don't look at the arm, look at me. I'm turning the hands of the clock back on your hand, so-to-speak. Two minutes should be enough; before you engaged in combat. Your arm will be just as it is before the fight. Don't worry about the weird feeling of "lag" that come after it's done. That's just your hand re-synchronizing to your body after I created the discrepancy in their times."

As time wound backwards for Shilo's arm, Lazarus let go of Shilo's hand, not wanting to touch her any longer than he needed to. The cut disappeared after a few moments, as if it was "uncut". Her flesh and skin sealed back up like a Ziploc, leaving no scar behind. It was brand new, like as if the cut had never happened. Lazarus stood back up while peeling off his gloves and closing his medkit. Sometimes, he considered downsizing to a smaller kit, one he could wear on his belt. All he needed were gloves and painkillers most of the time.

Gabrielle, the woman whom Lazarus compared to the raven haired leader of Team 73, gave a brief glance at where the sword wielding teen once stood. She looked at Lazarus, the apathetic haze over her eyes earlier had lifted, replaced by something that indicated that there was life underneath. She knew Lazarus hated it when she and Abaddon took human life so lightly. It was a habit from their past lives that refuses to leave even after so many years. "Sorry, Laz. Three confirmed kills. We could've used less force. I'll handle all the paperwork for you if you want."

Lazarus took a deep breath, remembering what Gabrielle and Abaddon had just done to three eXceeded. The Guardians were meant to incapacitate and capture illegal eXceeded. Killing illegal eXceeded in an engagement was normally a lot of paperwork, but with how "complete" the SERAPHs make their kills, it made the situation even more complicated. Frowning, he readjusted his glasses and looked at his two contractors. Gabrielle meant every word she said. She was sorry, but it wasn't for killing. Neither SERAPH was sorry for killing. They were only sorry for complicating matters for Lazarus. There was no point in reprimanding them in front of Team 73 and especially when the SERAPHs were only fulfilling their purpose. "No. That's my job. You guys have your own share of forms to fill out. Just...watch your force when in combat next time. We'll have to get around to revising your contracts soon."

Nara offered another smile to Oscar, with a nod. Yeah, she was totally fine. The woman stayed close to the nerdy young man as her best friend stepped up to take the ride. “Yeah,” Quincy responded to Hound with a nod. His voice was calm and even, just like his outward appearance. Afterall, the man’s anxieties weren’t really related to social awkwardness. So, Laura would be catching him, alright. The doctor was launched into the sky just like the others had been. It was actually kind of relaxing, moving that fast and not feeling a single thing.

    When the jetstream left him
Quincy made no show of it. He followed the inertia up without fighting against it and allowed gravity to take him without any struggle. He positioned his body in a way similar to that of a skydiver. As the tornadoes caught him, he re-positioned himself to land on his feet. It was nice and simple. “Th-thank y-you,” the doctor offered to Laura.

“Beautiful, as always,” Carmen added, smiling at Hendricks. “And now-,”
“It’s my turn,” Xander pushed himself to his feet from where he sat next to Alpha and stepped forward. “Go easy on me, Hound, I’m delicate.” The man joked, fluttering his eyelashes to emphasize that he wasn’t serious.

At Shilo's thanks, Lazarus gave her a warm smile, clearly glad that she was feeling alright. Lazarus was starting to feeling the drawback of his powers. Some one and a half hours of sleep debt wasn't much, but it hits hard as he used his powers more and more. "No problem, Shilo. You did well. Most people wouldn't even have been able to walk away with their lives in a fight against a guy like that."

As Team 73 made their brief introductions, Gabrielle and Abaddon acted as if they hadn't just brutally killed three people. It was their primary nature. As Artemis began to hand the bow of light back to Gabrielle, the bow dissolved in the blonde's very hands into glittering particles that soon faded out of view. The same went with the mirrors and the bow in Gabrielle's own hand. Gabby had put on her "social face", ready to talk to all these strangers. Pretending to be friendly wasn't her favorite thing to do. It came naturally if they were actually friends, but she understood how her "173" persona could be a bit off putting and callous. Smiling at the team, but looking at Artemis, Gabby said with a bat of her eyes, "Pleasure to meet you. I'm SERAPH-173 Gabrielle. I'm an infiltration specialist and assassin. I go by 173, Akimoto, or Gabby, but you can call me whatever you want."

Gabby cringed a little at how she said those words. She may have came off in a way she didn't want to come off as... Now that the woman was out of combat, she pulled her hair tie off to let her jet black hair flow freely down her shoulders. A frown crept onto Gabby's face when she looked down at her outfit. Her flannel shirt had been torn to shreds in the skirmish and her jeans weren't doing much better. She pulled the remains of the shirt off and tucked it into her belt. She wore a tight white t-shirt underneath that revealed that her right arm was covered in glowing white tattoos with various religious and arcane imagery. In contast, her entire left arm was heavily scarred with bullet wounds, burns, cuts, and other unidentifiable means, as we're the parts of her legs exposed by where her jeans were torn.

"A pleasure to meet you as well. I apologize for such a messy introduction. We encountered a small group of ruffians on our way here. They intended on reappropriating our equipment for their own use," Abaddon quickly spoke as Gabrielle became silent. He pointed to the large pickup truck nearby loaded with crates that were clearly of military origin. The man stood tall above everyone else, dwarfing even Vincent at a staggering 7'3". He was a mountain of rippling muscle wearing a torn t-shirt that seemed ready to burst at any moment and white, military style fatigues with combat boots. Tattoos of every style adorned his bare arms-similar to those that Gabrielle bore, except they were black and red instead of white-all of which did little to conceal the scars too numerous to count or distinguish from one another. The man's left eye was a amber like the kind you would find a fossil while his right eye glowed gold, clearly artificial. His original eye brightened from its apathetic haze to a much warmer color as he began to speak in a friendlier tone, "Ah, introductions slipped my mind. I am SERAPH-097 Abaddon. Explosive ordnance specialist and heavy weapons. I go by Donovan. I look forward to meeting the others. What are the team assignments, Lazarus?"

"Gabrielle is with Shilo, Vincent, Tami, and I. We'll be Team Helios, doing hit and run ops mainly. Abaddon, you're with Eric, Artemis, Void, and Malcolm. You guys are psychological warfare and area denial. Make sure you guys watch Tami and Malcolm; you know how they are with their powers."

The funny thing was, Xander didn’t really have an attitude. He was the most laid back, easy going of the entire group. However, he was very serious about trust. The entire Team was, but him specifically. When Hound has shot down his suggestion only to respond with a similarly deadly trust exercise, he’d been a little annoyed. Of course, everyone knew that as he didn’t really keep it a secret. But now that the situation had been worked out, the sniper was all chill once more.

“See, I don’t think that means- oh, shit, we’re going.” Xander was about to give some sarcastic response, only to cut it off with another non-serious response. He closed his eyes tightly, as if bracing himself, and then opened one in time to see Hound touch his shoulder. The man rocketed into the air faster than any of the others. “What! No fair!” Carmen called, crossing her arms over her chest as she watched her brother fly into the sky. That had been the kind of treatment she was hoping for. Why had Hound gone so easy on her? The pilot scowled, half playfully half not, at the Guardian.

And then Xander exited the jetstream. He tried to inhale but the air felt a bit thin. The man who always like the feel in control, lost it. He flailed against the feeling of rushing through the air until he reached the apex and started to plummet toward the ground. It took him a moment to gather himself and lay himself as flat in the air as possible, similar to how Quincy had. He’d jumped out of plans before, falling wasn’t new to him, but that jetstream had been something else.

Once he was caught, however, the man cheered. Just as Nara had done, he exclaimed his excitement for the roller coaster like ride. Cheers and laughs could be heard as Oscar sent the man around. He was glad that the nerd had caught him and not the girl. Not because Laura didn’t have the ability, no, she definitely did. But this was so much more fun than a tornado. Xander landed on his feet, stumbling just a bit but catching himself easily. “That was fucking awesome,” he chuckled. The man looked to Oscar, grinning. And then the nerd exclaimed. “Yes!” Xander responded, walking toward him, that grin still on his face as he rested a hand on the other's shoulder and another on the back of his neck. “Fuck yes, you did, man. Thank you.” Without thinking, adrenaline still pumping through his own veins, Xander grabbed Oscar on either side of the other man’s face and pressed his lips to the eXeed’s forehead. “You fucking did it, man.” He repeated, patting him on the shoulder before withdrawing and turning to Hound. “Alright, what’s next?”

Nara had watched the interaction, her hand going to her mouth as she laughed at her Teammate’s response to being caught. She knew for a fact that if Oscar hadn’t been excited, Xander wouldn’t have responded in such a way. Nonetheless, it had been entertaining. “You did great, Oscar. You’re really impressive.” The woman stated, offering a kind smile. Quincy, who had stepped back to his friend's side and taken his scarf back, nodded in agreement. “All th-th-three of y-you are.” He stated simply, cracking a small smile of his own. They were rare, and they never stayed long, but Quincy’s smiles were genuine and always seemed to brighten the room. At least Nara thought so. The hacker wrapped her arms around the doctor’s, resting her head against his shoulder. While Laura had been actively trying to avoid looking like she and Oscar was involved, Nara had no issue looking like she and Quincy were together. Mostly because they weren’t, the Team knew that, everyone knew that. However, they were incredibly close, and due to that, it often came off that way. They never thought about it because, well, they never thought about being with one another.

“That was so awesome!” Carmen had hurried over after her brother had turned away, not caring quite yet what was up next. Oscar had been amazing. All his training, even throwing a car off of a cliff, had led to him being able to grab a person from free fall at hundreds of feet in the air. It had been like watching an artist paint a masterpiece. At least, to Carmen, who found the eXeed overall amazing and despite the little time she had spent with the Guardians, really liked all of them (save for Salvo). “Okay, seriously though. You, me, Nara, we have to collaborate on something. Oh, Hound can join too, but whatever. I need to build a car for you. Like, any time, just give me the model you want and I got you.” One, Carmen wanted the challenge of building a car with a more electronic system. It wasn’t something she was particularly used to. Two, she wanted to build something that could handle Oscar’s power, or more, something simple enough that her could control it without much effort on his part.

Just seconds after Gabrielle decided to take off her shirt, the first thing to run through her mind was, Sh##, sh##, sh##. Why did my's shirt have to get torn up so bad? No part of her like showing skin, least of all Akimoto. All parts of Gabrielle agreed that her skin was hideous; scars like these drove normal people away and served as a reminder that she wasn't human. She had always tried to hide her scars under clothing, but now, her clothing had failed her. As if looking like her arm was put through and blender and then set on fire, she was coming off as a fake-a$$ b####. Gabrielle hated 173 right now, as a collective person. 173 was great at many things, but in terms of social interaction, she'd sooner kill than engage in a social situation. She tried to force Akimoto to take center stage, but she didn't want to cooperate. It didn't help that skin was being shown; Akimoto hated Gabrielle's skin with a passion. The awkward situation where 173 tried to pretend to be Akimoto was making Gabrielle look fake. It was fake. She can tell that people noticed. Lazarus was a great guy, but asking her to be friendly at her first impression just wasn't comfortable.

Though her thoughts raged on, none of these thoughts penetrated Gabrielle's smiling face. She wasn't entirely human, but she'd learned how to put on an appearance to seem more normal and more acceptable to humans. Just keep up the act and let the awkward cooperation between 173 and Akimoto handle everything. S###, should she commit to her earlier words? Look consistent or be more transparent? Consistency. "Alright, Arte. You know, it's funny, I know someone who has the same name as you... middle name at least. The name isn't the only thing you guys have in common though. Both of you are solid tens."

Abaddon knew that so much about the situation made Gabrielle uncomfortable. She was trying to be a part of herself that wasn't natural in this situation. He didn't worry about her on the battlefield, but he berry much worried about her emotional health. He'd hurt her and let her be hurt before, so protecting her in this way was some sort of consolation in his eyes. Taking the attention away from her was part of his atonement. "Just a note before anyone gets confused, Gabrielle and I are not eXceeded. Our powers come from wholely different sources. After all, we didn't get our powers on Earth, or even this dimension. Mine is an advanced biological weapon, and hers...well, she killed two gods for it."

"I didn't kill them. Only weaken them. Besides, I had help from an angel both times."

Abaddon realized after what he said that he actually put more attention on Gabrielle. A slight misjudgment on his part. He was proud that she managed accomplish such a task no matter how much help she got. He gave another shot at diverting the conversation, picking up on Eric's comment on Shilo and Vincent's interjection, "I'm sure those are interesting stories. I tend to be quite messy as well, but I always clean up after myself."

Vincent's smile, words, and tone made Gabby cringe a little more on the inside. He didn't seem to be that kind of guy, but she didn't like the way he said it. It made Gabby uncomfortable, 173 and Akimoto both understood why, but made no effort to correct Vincent. The man meant the best, kind of like Lazarus, but he was just unfamiliar. She was glad when Vincent turn his attention to Lazarus.

"Huh?...Oh!" Lazarus was initially confused when Vincent asked the question. The leader of the Guardians wasn't entirely sure what the co-leader of Team 73 was asking at first. It took a few moments to recall what he had in mind. His question for Shilo slipped his mind during the battle. "Sorry, I almost forgot about it. Shilo, if you don't mind, I was just wondering where you learned all of your skills. People with your skill set aren't very common."

Carmen playfully rolled her eyes but she understood what Hound meant. Nonetheless, she was going to drag him back out here sometime so they could do it again. Maybe she could get Mask to catch her...and down the rabbit hole of thoughts Carmen went with that idea. But she was forced from her fantasy when she heard Xander’s excitement, which allowed her to respond accordingly. When Oscar asked Hound if her idea of a custom car was okay, the woman couldn’t help but grin in excitement. “Yes! Okay, get me a make and model you want and I will turn the whole thing into your personal playground. The data,” she turned to Hound with that. “From the Humvee would be great. It’ll help me and Nara set up the system so Oscar could use it at full power without issue. But everything else I should be able to get on my own. I’ll let you know if something comes up.” The woman stepped away for a moment, pulling out her phone and a stylus as she got to work on a list of things she might need off of the top of her head. Nara joined her soon after and the two of them had a list of ideas for items, as well as a system, created in basically no time at all.

“Okay, it’ll be something to do while we’re waiting. It won’t be ready for a minute though… But, it’ll be bad ass once it is.” Carmen pocketed her phone. “Now,” she clapped her hands together and turned to Hound once more. “Are we going to go inside and play with the doohickies and talk about our traumatic life stories?” She smiled in a cute way and Nara rolled her eyes. Out of the four of the Team, the hacker had had the easiest life. Out of the guardians and Alpha, she wasn’t sure how she compared. As a whole, the Team had no issue discussing their experiences in life.
“I thought we were going to play two truths one lie, or whatever.” Xander cut in, quirking an eyebrow.
“Oh yeah! That could be fun too. Either way let’s go! I only have so much time to dig up your secrets."

When Artemis tried to look over Gabrielle, the SERAPH crossed her arms, with her right on top of her left. A part of Akimoto had pushed through the surface; the situation wasn't sufficiently hostile to keep all of 173 in control. Akimoto felt uncomfortable having eyes on her when her skin was exposed. She was very self-conscious about her skin and it was a reason she would try to cover it up as much as possible. Gabrielle bit back her tongue, anticipating 173's response. The likelyhood of 173 getting defensive in response to Akimoto shrinking was almost certain. It took no shortage of will for 173 to be somewhat sociable. Artemis' offer to make clothes was nice, but Gabrielle couldn't help but think part of the deal involved modeling for the fashionista. That wasn't going to happen. "Thank you, but you don't have to waste your time on making clothes for me. I have something more suited for combat...this isn't it. I... appreciate the thought though."

Abaddon wasn't pleased when Eric asked to get a sample of the Horseman's Spire the biological weapon implanted inside of him. From the files, he understood that Eric was a biological and chemical weapons expert, not far off from his own expertise, but who these people were in character, Abaddon wasn't sure. Eric seemed to be of adequate moral character, but in this line of work, one can never be sure. And character wasn't Abaddon's only worry. With the technology of this world, there was no safe way of extracting a sample of the Spire in his spine. In the interest of protecting the host and spreading itself, the Spire would automatically attempt to implant copies of itself into everyone in the room.

An outbreak of the Horseman's Spire was another problem that neither the Guardians nor the city could handle. Every person infected by the Spire had a parasite eating them from the inside out unless they consume biomass to maintain the incredible regenerative properties the Spire provides. It turned infected individuals into monsters that could raze entire cities, colonies, and even planets. It was a mercy that Abaddon was different. His own immune system fought the Spire to a standstill until it adapted to become a symbiotic organism rather than parasitic organism. Abaddon didn't have to consume a person every day to keep living, though it's not like it mattered. He'd killed enough people to cover the remainder of his life time several times over.

The SERAPH's eyes glazed over with the same apathetic haze that was present when he finished off his two victims. Frowning under his beard, Abaddon immediately dropped any trace of friendliness in his voice as he stepped up to Eric and looked down, "Eric Cross, I recommend that you don't attempt to collect any samples or ask me about this again. The Horseman's Spire is a very dangerous biological weapon from beyond this world, one that your world cannot survive if set loose. I am the only vessel in this world capable of safely containing it. It is unimaginable power and catastrophe that no human should possess or have knowledge of."

After his warning to Eric, the haze disappeared from Abaddon's eyes and he stepped away from the chemist. His tone reverted to the friendly one he used to address Team 73, "As for all the stories of gods and angels, I'll spare you the hours of explanation for another time. This world and universe is not the only one, and there are beings that exist between the folds of realities who possess unimaginable power. These are the so called 'gods' that humans have worshiped are not easy to kill, but far from immortal. The powers that Gabrielle and I have received are the product of such beings. In a certain sense, so are the eXceeded."

Lazarus solemnly nodded along as Shilo told her story. A father who turned his daughter to be a killer... Lazarus couldn't imagine what must go through a person's mind to do something like that. When he had children, he would've wanted to taught them how to protect their lives, but also the lives of others. He knew Gabrielle shared a similar early childhood and how much she resented it. The Marine wondered if Shilo resented her past as much as the SERAPH did, especially when she shared about her fear of touch. He'd noticed it when he healed her wound just minutes ago; he always paid attention to his patients and their reactions to what he said. It wasn't just a part of being a good medic, it was in Lazarus' interest to make sure everyone he comes across comes away better.

Once Shilo finished, her story, Lazarus want to just give her a big hug and tell her how sorry he was about her upbringing, but he knew how much Shilo would like that. It was a pretty big public display of affection and he knew he was uncomfortable with Tami's PDAs. He could only imagine how much Shilo would feel uncomfortable and patronized. He kept the hug for another time, and said with a smile, "I'm glad you're on our side. Your father must have been one serious customer if he trained you to be like how you are. I don't remember my father, but our previous leader was like a father to me. Avrum Graves was his name. Changed everyone in the original Guardians' lives in the short time we were together."

Carmen grinned. “A Rimac-,” but then Hound jumped in to be a party pooper. The woman tried to jump back into the conversation multiple times, each time to be cut off by one of the two arguing men. Xander was bracing himself for the outburst he knew was coming. Quincy and Nara glanced at one another and then back at the scene as it played out. Finally Carmen stomped her foot, raising her voice louder than she probably had to in her frustration. “Jesus fucking Christ, can I respond please!” She sent a glare at Hound, since he had been the one to start this entire argument. “This was my idea, and I told him he could get any make or model he wanted because I didn’t expect you guys to provide the car. You don’t have to pay a dime, or else I wouldn’t have suggested it. Now if you want to provide the car, fine, but because this is my idea and my project could you talk to me about it before you go off on your little back and forth and pretend that the person who is in charge of this little thing,” she pointed to herself. “Isn’t right in front of you?” Carmen did not like being interrupted, and she especially didn’t like it when a project of hers was hijacked by bureaucrats, or anyone at all, really. Now that she was in a mood, though, it was less likely she was going to allow anyone but herself to provide the vehicle. “I’m not taking a spare car,” she told Hound. If he would have let her talk, she probably wouldn’t have had such an attitude with him now. “And now, the kid is definitely getting a Rimac.” The mechanic turned away and headed inside, sitting at one of the tables and picking up one of the gadgets while she waited for her annoyance with everyone settled down.

Xander looked at Hound and made an apologetic expression as he shrugged. He followed everyone else inside and sat down next to his sister, wrapping an arm around her as he leaned in and whispered something in her ear. Carmen pulled away and glared at him for a moment, to which he responded by raising his hands in the air and turning to the table to find something to play with himself. As he picked something up, he looked around until he found Hound. “Alright, who’s going to start? Because, I can.” He stated. “But how is this going to work? The person whose turn it is says their two truths and a lie, and then explains the two truths?”

Nara walked along with everyone else, but broke away from Quincy’s side and went to see what Oscar was playing with. “Tell me about it,” she requested with a gentle smile on her face as she looked up at him for a moment then back down at the robot. Quincy followed after Hound, deciding if he was going to be with someone who wasn’t on his Team, he might as well be with someone he could be around with less anxiety. So, the blonde sat down at the table next to the other man and looked over it all. None of it was really something he would play with, but he had spent enough time around Nara, and Carmen for that matter, that he could at least understand most of it. So, he picked something up and started to look over it.

The female SERAPH felt the sincerity behind Artemis' words. Akimoto would appreciate free clothes from a designer like Artemis at any given opportunity. But 173 was not Akimoto...well, they are technically the same person, but that wasn't the point. 173 was on guard, somewhat...afraid that Artemis was going to take advantage of Gabby. She wanted to protect the weakest part of Gabrielle....that was her purpose for existing after all. What would Akimoto say? Looking at Artemis, Gabrielle smiled, but her eyes had transitioned to their unfeeling haze once again. 173 offered the best of Akimoto she could manage with a flirty smile, "Okay, fine. I'll take you up the offer. My only request is that you don't make anything too revealing. In fact, let them cover up as much as possible. I want to let a few special people those parts of me."

What Abaddon said was a threat...in a way. If there were only two things he cared about, it was Gabby and the Horseman's Spire. For Gabby, he knew how vulnerable she was in certain aspects and how much he'd done to aid in their development. It was his obligation to protect her...to try to protect her in ways she could protect herself. The second was a responsibility given to him. There was no way Earth could survive the Horseman's Plague. Even one rogue carrier could mean the proliferation of the Plague across a nation.

Abaddon did not agree with Lazarus' call to involve Team 73. They were human; they were weak. That in no way meant that he hated humanity, it just meant that humans weren't designed to fight. SERAPHs, however...were designed from the ground up to take lives and planets. SERAPH fireteams have come to known for their ability eradicate entire planetary defense forces by themselves. Humans from his universe used to be the most powerful beings in the Galaxy, but then they created SERAPHs. If Seraph PSC existed in this universe, the Ashfall would be a non-issue. But since he and Gabrielle weren't on their home turf, they had to turn to the MRD and other similar organizations to coordinate a defense. Abaddon was willing to accept fighting alongside metahumans, but pure humans? It was waste of life and effort on their part.

Abaddon's eyes met Shilo's teal eyes with his cold eyes as she spoke. Her words started off nice, but he didn't have the luxury of trust with humans. The humans in one universe created the SERAPHs and attempted to steal the power of the gods. The humans in another universe created metahumans and attempted to become gods among men. Humanity wanted power, whether it was good or not was an age old debate. No matter how well defended the knowledge or samples or a weapon like the Horseman's Spire will be, there will always be a way for the power hungry to obtain it. Human inventions are nothing to god's power, and yet humans still made the gods bow to them. "Being bound by multiple contracts, I have an obligation to protect both the Horseman's Spire and this world. I will not hesitate to choose my objective over what humans think is important."

    "That's enough, 097,"
It wasn't like Abaddon to create friction with friendly forces. The SERAPH had become uncharacteristically brutal with his responses, something that only happened when all of his patience was gone. Lazarus understood why that patience that usually characterized Abaddon disappeared so quickly. The few lines that Abaddon's drew were being crossed two at a time. He had clearly picked up on Gabrielle's discomfort, then someone asked him about the Horseman's Spire. In response, 097 surfaced to protect the two things that mattered the most to him, just like how 173 was supposed to protect Gabrielle.

At Lazarus's retort, Abaddon loosened up. He was reminded that he was supposed to work as an equal with these humans. Abaddon did not like the idea of working with those who did not stand with him on equal footing, but that was part of the contract with Lazarus, "I apologize for my harsh words. The Horseman's Spire is a...delicate topic. There is a certain amount of...personal investment involved with the weapon in addition to it's dangerous nature. Humans wanting information on power they should not have has never ended well, so forgive me for being on edge when you attempt question me. There is a certain unspoken law among my associates that whatever belongs in one universe shall stay in said universe. At the moment, I do not trust you enough to divulge information that could endanger worlds beside your own. However, I will refrain from threatening your Team in the future."

"Okay, okay. We're getting off on some awkward footing here, so how about we continue our talk in a more relaxed environment?"
Lazarus glanced over to Abaddon and Gabrielle, who were clearly not getting along with Team 73 very well. Team 73 was unintentionally crossing lines that the two rarely expressed, lines that took the Guardians far too long to become aware of. They dealt with business, not relationships, so incorporating into a team other than their own was difficult. Mask once observed that the SERAPHs were more so weapons than soldiers. Like a weapon, they performed their intended role with a brutal efficiency without an emotion...but utterly fail in any task aside from that. A good way to get the SERAPHs out of that mindset if even for a moment was with food. Whether SERAPH, metahuman, or human, everyone here was a living being that needed fuel. Food was that fuel 99% of the time, and Lazarus was sure that SERAPHs, Guardians, and Team 73 alike would see the value in good food and drinks. "There will be people to handle the mess we made coming soon, and I want to avoid paperwork putting an end to our conversation. Let's go get some boba and have a chat over drinks. My treat."

Carmen was glad that Hound had removed himself from the project, and like a flip had been switched, she was back to her happy self. She looked up as Xander cleared his throat, readying himself to speak loud enough that everyone could hear his two truths and his lie. “Alright, so, I went to FSU, I’ve only had one girlfriend, and I don’t have tinnitus.” He thought he’d start it off with about as least personal as one could get. Just some fun facts about himself. His twin chuckled and went back to fiddling with the parts in her hand.

At Oscar’s question, Nara smiled and gave a nod. She did, genuinely, want to hear about the robot. As the young man spoke, the woman looked over the MAUS, taking in the design and everything about it she could see. “I like it,” she finally stated once he finished. “What exactly would you want me and Carmen to do though? It seems like you have it pretty much under control and I don’t want to hinder your process or anything by getting too many hands into the cookie jar,” she gave another small smile. “How does the operating system work exactly? And your power, you basically just take control of the system? So, what makes things harder to control or easier?” The more Nara knew, the more she could help.

When the woman sat down next to him Quincy froze for a moment, looking too intently at the device in his hands. Out of all of the people to sit with him, Laura was probably the worst choice. Not because of her personality, by any means, he found her to be quite stabilizing for the most part. But, she just looked too much like-, the man pushed away the thought, adjusting his glasses before giving a nod. “I-I-It’s an int-t-t-teresting c-c-conc-c-cept. It d-d-doesn’t l-look lik-k-ke it could be u-u-u-used for m-m-much though,” he agreed with a nod. He set the device down and turned his attention to Xander as his Teammate spoke. He hoped that the game would be enough of a distraction for now.

Gabrielle bit back any remarks she had about Artemis’s wandering eyes. She knew the fashionista meant no harm by it, but Akimoto was getting very uncomfortable. Akimoto kept on pushing against 173 in an attempt to get her to cover up someway somehow, but the latter didn’t relent; she only stood firm against Akimoto’s request. It was some relief to both 173 and Akimoto when it was obvious Artemis wasn’t picking up on the flirting. 173 didn’t have to pretend to Akimoto, and Akimoto didn’t have to be dying of embarrassment every moment Akimoto tried to be suave or coy. A similar relief came on the SERAPH when Lazarus proposed leaving. It was a chance to cover up and recompose herself so that Akimoto would actually want to take control.

Abaddon nodded at Shilo’s response, but it was of little relevance to the man. Understanding the client and their allies wasn’t part of the job...though Abaddon must admit that Lazarus and his friends have become more than just their employers. It made things simpler when there was no attachment. That was what SERAPHs were made for: weapons of war, not human beings, "To avoid confusion in the future, consider me a mere weapon-a tool that doesn’t belong to you-and that will be sufficient to avoid conflicts."

Lazarus nodded at Vincent’s request and let out a little chuckle. Good thing he asked Hound to leave them the Humvee, otherwise, they’d have to cram seven people into a pick up that was already near max capacity. ”No sweat. You and Shilo can ride with me and Gabby, and the twins can ride with Donovan. We’ll have a few minutes to get used to our subteams on the ride there, how’s that sound?”

"I got shotgun," Gabrielle didn’t wait to hear Team 73’s response; she went straight towards the Humvee got in, eager to cover up. Once inside, she went straight for Lazarus’s second duffel in the backseat, where he kept his change of clothes and borrowed his dress shirt. He wasn’t going to change anytime soon, so no harm done. Gabrielle slipped on the navy blue dress shirt that was admittedly a bit big, even for her, but it covered her up, and that was all that she needed. She breathed in the smell of cologne on the shirt as she waited for to Lazarus and the others to join her.

When Lazarus got in the car, he immediately noticed his shirt on Gabrielle. He understood why she did it, but he didn't quite feel entirely comfortable with the gesture. It felt a bit too...familiar for two coworkers, even if they were friends. What would people think when a girl just takes your shirt knowing that you would let her? Lazarus honestly wondered if this was how Gabrielle acted with all of her friends; it was hard to tell, since her only friends were the Guardians. "Gabby, if you need to cover up, I would appreciate it if you asked first. You know how I feel about you taking my stuff without asking. It makes it seem like something is between us. You get me?"

"Yeah...Sorry, force of habit..." Gabrielle offered no further explanation as she sank into her seat and brushed her hair to the left side of her face, playing with the tips of the raven black hair. Absently mindedly, she half-muttered and half-sang in Korean, loud enough for only Lazarus to hear clearly, "~...멈출 수 없는 이 떨림은 *mumble* 내 전부를 너란 불길...~"

Nara’s eyes widened a bit at his question as if she seemed worried she’d offended him somehow. “Oh! I was… I misunderstood. I’m sorry,” she offered an awkward, shy smile as he continued to explain how MAUS worked. “Hmmm,” the hacker hummed to herself as she looked over the robot once more. “It sounds like a pretty cool deal. And it's to be used for recon? Question: if it’s shot from the sky while you’re using it, do you just get smacked back into your body or do you get hurt?” Nara’s gaze flicked back to Xander as he gave his truths and a lie, smirking as Hound and Laura spoke on what they thought her Teammate’s lie was.

Carmen chuckled when Hound said Xander didn’t look like the kind of guy who got girlfriends easily. “I mean, to be fair, no one on the Team has an easy time with it.” Whether it was getting them, or keeping them, significant others just weren’t things that the group really sought to have. Quincy smirked as well, though didn’t say anything. The doctor’s gaze fell to the contraptions in front of him and he just absentmindedly moved them around. Not really looking at them or trying to test what they did.

“Okay, first of all, I said that I don’t have tinnitus, Hound. Rude ass. Most of the other people I worked alongside before I joined Team 73 did, however. So,” Xander gave an awkward point at Hound before going back to addressing the others in the room. “You’re right, though. I didn’t go to FSU. I didn’t go to college, actually. I have only had one girlfriend, we met when I was fifteen and started dating long distance. I proposed to her when I was twenty-two and we were supposed to be married when I got out. But, Kaloh approached me about Team 73 and I agreed,” the man cleared his throat, looking down at his feet as he adjusted his weight and then looked back to the others, though avoided eye contact with everyone. “So, I faked my death and she got a folded flag and I got to act like I’m saving the world.” The rest of the Team fell silent, almost as if out of respect. “But, yeah. Those are my two truths and a lie.”

Abaddon’s pickup, the SERAPH dealt with Artemis and Eric. The living weapon of war was no stranger to the bickering of siblings, but it felt no less a waste of breath. There was a disconnect between the way these people thought and an inability to exhaustively express and understand one’s thought process. It would sound pretentious and be untruthful to claim that SERAPHs were above that, but they had one advantage: they didn’t care about those deficiencies. They shared one purpose, one mind, and one spirit in the body known as Seraph. Difference in opinion didn’t matter when there was a task and guidelines set out before them by the client.

Abaddon let the two speak until Artemis gave him a smile. He gave a brief look of acknowledgement before almost robotically turning the ignition and begin driving. The SERAPH thought of it inconvenient that he had to explain this to the twins; his clients always knew what they were hiring, but Artemis didn’t seem to understand quite yet, "Allow me to elaborate on my statement. I am not human, I am a SERAPH, a being that was designed for war from before our fetuses were synthesized. Unlike humans, morality is foreign to us. The only thing we know how to do is survive and obey orders. We make no moral judgment, that burden lies in the hands of our client, in this case, Lazarus. When you see us in combat, it will be easy enough to stop imagining us as human; it will be better for your soul to do so."

    --------------------

Meanwhile, Lazarus drummed his fingers against the steering wheel as he pulled the Humvee out of the empty lot outside of the warehouse. He blocked out Gabrielle’s voice as he took out his phone and typed out a quick message to the other Guardians. Every incident had to be reported, and Lazarus was not one to let one slip just because it was convenient. Mask, Salvo, and Void can take care of the Battle Damage Assessment and arrest of the surviving eXceeded. Lazarus would do it himself, but building relations with Team 73 took precedence on almost every level.

Lazarus cruised down the road at a cool 40 miles per hour, following close behind Abaddon’s pickup. He placed his attention on the road in front of him trying not to pay attention to the SERAPH beside, so when Vincent spoke, Lazarus welcomed the conversation, "Sounds good. You want to be the answerer, Vincent?"

Gabrielle just sat in her seat, partially relieved that there weren’t so many people...looking. It was an opportunity to recompose herself. She had to remind herself that Lazarus didn’t see things the same twisted way she did. That was difficult, but she’s had years of practice now, "Actually...I’ll be the answerer. I’m not as on edge now," She sat up straight and drummed her fingers on the center console, "I’ll play fair. I’ll think of something that actually exists in this world."

"Glad to see you opening up. Is the object organic in nature?"

    "Nope!"
