Chapter Six: All Hands on Deck

Elinor accepted the Sams and Samanthas' replacement shield with a nod of thanks. After that, and before Mario could jump the gun without any input from his squad leader and fire, she spoke up. "Hold your horses, Sergeant. I want another look at it before you let all hell loose in this hallway again." She waved at him to stand down for the moment. "Brute force is all well and good but if we've got some way to finesse, I'd rather save your missiles. Remember we don't have a base to resupply from. And two, if they don't work and we end up Traversing to talk to it, we'll have a lot harder time convincing it we're friends if we've done our damnest to blow it up."

Captain Hesperus Captain Hesperus (tag!)

Cera, an Ura-Meltrand developed to follow orders, glanced to Elinor from her cover. In her universe, no one put such actions as Mario's into play without the clear consent of their battle-superior, but these were not Ura-Meltrandi among her, nor was this anything but a human situation, inside a human base, on their very own, very human homeworld.

Cera understood that she was more than an Ura-Meltrandi now, she was a Wild Card and a Traverser. She would not make any interventions here. Instead, her Centurion and aegis at the ready, she continued to watch and learn.

Cera paused, interested in Elly Nor's line of thinking. It seemed the engineer and test pilot inside of her dentella wanted action.

If Mario does not hold his fire, let me know. Otherwise, the following takes place.

The energy field glowed, sparkling without being too bright to look upon. Elinor could tell that, if closer inspection were performed, she might be able to see beyond the barrier as perhaps Cera had when she had physically-interacted with the barrier.

Kaerri Kaerri What does Elinor do?

Mario is just about to pull the trigger on the mini missiles when Elinor told him to hold it. Yanking his arm back, he replies, "Yes, ma'am! Holding fire!"

With that, he pauses and waits for his commanding officer to give the next command.

Elinor's character sheet
Action Points: 4/6
Bonus action point: 1

1. Travel to the port city of Veracruz to Chessel Corporation's machining base. About two miles from the base, there is a heavily-armed outpost ("Outpost 5") with a single large reinforced door.
2. Blow your way into the outpost. Expect opposition from the base's automated defenses in the form of drone aircraft and anti-aircraft guns. The outpost's reinforced door should take around 40 total short-range missiles to destroy. This will gain you access to the underground highway the outpost protects. Once in, opposition from the outpost should cease.
3. Park your aircraft just beyond the destroyed door to the outpost. Professor Stein will stay with the mecha and act as your intelligence officer while you are in the base via the polyphonic nexus. Albert has tangled with Chessel Corporation before and can help you. Hitomi will be feeding him information from the Broadsword's bridge via Captain Piper.
4. Detach your Rifleman Cyclones from the aeronautical veritechs and Traverse with them. The Sams loaded your Cyclone-based armament with the Cyclones. Hitomi says, your traversing with the Cyclones means losing your link with the veritechs, so expect that.
5. Use the Cyclones to drive your way through the outpost's underground highway until you reach the Broadsword's Recovery Team in the main base. And, troops, it's a big, big base. The team is trapped inside of the main section. Your Cyclones are fitted with the means to track down the team via their distress beacons.
6. Once you reach them, find a way to open the main door from the inside to free the team.
7. Escort the team to your veritechs, then once in your veritechs, provide escort the Recovery Team to the Broadsword waiting in the Gulf of Mexico.

Seeing that Mario was doing as requested, Elinor approached the barrier. She held the end of her Centurion rifle's barrel against it, then pressed harder, to see what reaction (if any) was made. (Sparks, change in light or sound, or any other changes in appearance it might make). She then did the same with the back of her armored hand -- the back, because when human hands receive an electric shock, they close, and she'd long ago developed the habit of testing potentially dangerous objects in such a way that her hand didn't lock onto it. That done, she peered through the barrier to see what she could make out of what lay beyond it, particularly looking for anything that looked like it would control the barrier, but also anything interesting.

Pressing the barrel of the lethal Centurion rifle against the towering 20 foot by 20 foot emerald barrier is like pressing it up against a wall made of Mega-damage plastic; the barrel does not in any way harm the surface nor does the green barrier "give" in the slightest. It is when Elinor attempts to peer to see what is beyond the green barrier that she discovers something.

Pressing the helmet of her Cyclone against the green energy field, Elinor discerns another barrier beyond this door, except this one is different in two ways - it is a giant sliding metal door with oversized handles, and it is barely open, clearly unlocked - as if it were taunting her from beyond the green barrier. Elinor cannot see inside the crack of the sliding door to tell what lies beyond. She only knows there is a beyond.

What do the Wild Cards do?

"There's another door beyond this," Elinor tells the squad. "Really big, and open, so hopefully that won't be a problem once we get past this thing." She raps the barrier with her knuckles. "So, about that. Way I see it, we can Traverse with it -- as a group, mind -- and see about convincing it to lower itself, or we can let Mario nuke it again and try to overwhelm it that way. Taking votes now, write-ins welcome if you've got an option C."

Mario looks pensive. "We can give the Traversing thing a try, just as long as we all remember that we are in the middle of hostile territory and these Cores are going to be nasty to us. But I'm willing to give it a go."

Captain Hesperus Captain Hesperus (Tag!)

About this time, there came a transmission from Hitomi over the polyphonic nexus Professor Stein had created. She sounded as if she were in a good mood.

"Hey there, Wild Cards! Hitomi here. Mack came out of unconsciousness a short while ago. She's remained conscious and responsive. She..." there was a pause, "...is... making a heart for you with her hands. Yes, Mack, I'm talking to them. Just wanted to share the good news. Do you guys have time for a heads-up? Also, how are you doing in the enemy base?" Her questions carried a different tone than her previous statements. It sounded like she wanted to know as if it were the doctor (and not just the friend) in her doing the asking.

Toph replies, "Great news to hear! Thank you for that, Hitomi! We have found the missing Sam and Samantha units, and have decided to try and do some damage to this facility before we go. We ran into some automated guns and took them out, and now we have come up against a force field of some sort, and are now considering our next course of action on how to bypass it by either using missiles or Traversing it as a group to try and get it down to go past. Once that is done, we will be free to move further into the base and see what Chessel is hiding here."

Mario lets out a deep sigh. He had been so worried, so angry with himself for getting Mack hurt, it was hard to think straight. The need to do some damage to something to get his frustration out was almost overwhelming. After a moment, he turns to look at Toph. "Thanks for being here to stabilize her, LT. And Hitomi? Thank you for helping to keep Mack well taken care of. I owe both of you big time."

Toph smiles at the Italian. "Of course, Mario! Its what I'm here for! We are all Wild Cards, and we take care of our own. I still plan on holding you to the promise of some authentic Italian cooking though! Then you can call us even."

"I'll take you up on that, soldier!" Hitomi replied in a bright and enthusiastic manner. "By way of getting us something to eat besides M.R.E.s if you can? Ah... I'm getting the idea that Captain Piper is entertaining the notion of waking someone important out of cryosleep, and that means more mouth or mouths to feed depending on how many of these someones she has in mind. Oh, Toph? You mentioned some kind of force field, huh? What color is it?"

Toph sends back, "Bright green, nearly opaque, and laser resistant. Mario tried shooting it and we nearly got scorched by the blow back."

( Captain Hesperus Captain Hesperus Tag!)

"You don't say? Looks like you've found what Project Eternity calls a 'nega-field' also known as a 'Green Door!'" Hitomi mused. "Wild Cards, you might as well get out of your Cyclones now. Nothing made of Mega-damage materials or capable of inflicting Mega-damage can pass through a Green Door from either side."

Heya Gang!

I created nega-fields/Green Doors back in 2016 while Broadsword was in its infancy. In our Conversation, I mentioned I really wanted to create a game where all kinds of combat were possible all in the same game, from mecha combat to S.D.C.-based combat. None could interfere with the other. Hence, the Green Doors. Sure, it's been 4 years since I've finally been able to put them into the game, but hey, patience is a virtue! =)

Of course, any of you who have been reading Ricky and Ylva's prologue have seen the Green Door in action. =)

Hitomi continued. "The Anti-Unification League created the nega-field technology and I think this proves the professor's theory that Chessel Corporation has hard ties to the AUL. No one else on Earth has nega-fields. Not the Zentraedi or Meltrandi. Not even us in the United Earth Government. So if you want to get past it, walk right in! Just don't carry anything made of hypercarbon or capable of damaging hypercarbon with you. And don't try fooling it - the Green Door 'knows," the Hawaiian-Japanese doctor added cryptically.

Elinor burst out laughing. "Speak 'friend' and enter, huh? Who'd'a thought?" So it isn't a precise analogy -- the point was, don't overthink and get down to the simple stuff. "All right, gang, who's up for a stroll through the wild green yonder?" She herself started stepping out of the Cyclone and checking her gear for the prohibited items. "Hey, Sam, Samantha?" she called down the hall. "Our friends back on the Broadsword say we'll get through this just fine if we leave the hypercarbon-type gear behind, so can one or two of you keep an eye on that gear for us?"

Half a dozen Samanthas and Sams came running down the hall. As Elinor released herself from her Cyclone, Cera, seeing Elinor's move, did the same thing. Then a Sam unit stepped into Elinor's Cyclone (it's CVR-3 armor being precisely what Elinor and the rest of the Wild Cards were wearing) and transformed the Cyclone she had used into Battloid mode! Another took over Cera's Cyclone and readied her Centurion. They took defensive positions behind what little cover there was.

While they looked threatening enough, none of you had ever seen a Sam or Samantha do anything hostile before. But here, they certainly looked ready!

Mario looks at the Sams and asks, "I don't suppose you have access to a handful of conventional weapons? Standard projectile weapons are fine, or hell, even a knife made of non-hypercarbon materials."

Either way, he begins to unhook the Cyclone from his inner bodysuit, then unbuckles the CVR-3 armor and stands there in his lightweight jumpsuit, waiting.

Hercules followed suit with his fellow Wild Cards, stepping out of his Cyclone and handing it off to a waiting Samantha. He watched intently as Mario suggested a lower tech weapon. If they can provide, then maybe I won’t have to use another chair, he mused.

It was Toph's voice that answered, but it didn't come from Toph. The Samantha unit replied, "We have no weapons of any kind besides yours but... we are allowed to improvise to assist you." "She" pointed down the corridor to two dirty Sam units working on one of their loaders. In moments, and after some testing, a Sam unit approached.

"Forgive us," "he" said with a Japanese accent and a bow of apology which was followed by the others, "but short-range flamethrowers are the best we can provide. We can provide up to 8 flamethrowers, each with a 30 meter range and enough plasma for 3 hours of typical use. We hope this will suffice!"

The Sams, Samanthas, and even the loaders they had taken parts from all stood at attention awaiting your praise, rebuke, or anything in between. They stood dutifully.

These require W.P. Heavy Weapons to use with proficiency. Then again, it's a flamethrower. Besides being safety-conscious, it isn't that hard to use.

Toph shakes her head and sends out the comment, "I will pass on the flamethower, and will go ahead and stick to my knife fighting skills. Besides, the flamethrower may not make it through this green force field, where a simple knife should have no problem."

Cera took a good look at the flamethrowers and replied. "The flamethrowers do not appear to be made from hypercarbon. Sam made them and Sam likely understands our requirements. I believe they shall make it through this... Green Door." Cera, now wearing her UEEF-provided jumpsuit and skein suit underneath seemed to take special interest in the barrier now that the danger had passed.

Hitomi clarified. "As long as the weapon is not made from Mega-damage materials and cannot cause Mega-damage, it should pass through. Every Green Door I've been through worked that way going in and going out."

Mario nods as he listens. "Another benefit of a flamethrower is if we run into any people, there is the psychological effect of getting burned." He glances down at his pistol, and says, "This sidearm is a lightweight pistol, and does not do Mega Damage. It is a decent weapon, and I can turn it over to someone that needs it while I take a flamethrower. Lt. Kirin? Would you like to have something ranged instead of just a knife?"

Toph thinks for a moment, then says, "I am fine with just a knife if someone else wants to take the pistol. Up to you guys."
