| What is Channel 16? |​

Channel 16 is a roleplay created by Jewel and I, following the summer of a few fire tower lookouts and the weird things they keep on seeing, unsure if it’s just the isolation or if there’s actually something out there. More information can be found in the interest check and lore thread.

The rules are the usual ones, like no god-modding or powerplaying. However, there will be different areas in this roleplay, so before a post, it would be preferred that this little form below is included.

This is just to keep the roleplay rolling smoothly, especially since there is the likely possibility that different groups will have different events. A posting order will be implemented, and if a post is not made within two days of the order reaching your spot, you will be passed over and will get the opportunity to post the next time the order reaches you.

Posting requirements are a minimum of 2 paragraphs per post. We will be doing timeskips at points, and if you’d like to continue an interaction, please start a 1x1 thread with that person and post it to the OOC so the main thread does not become a 1x1 between just two people. Other than this, recaps of everything thats happened in and before events will be posted after each event concludes.

Personality: Casey is a big nature enthusiast and she had been her entire life. She loves being outside and exploring the world whenever possible, often going out on long solo hikes in her free time, though when around others they will find Casey to be extremely kind and motherly to almost everyone. Often going out of her way to help her friends and family, as well as being extremely calm even in tense situations but like anyone, she has her limits. Thunderstorms terrify her and will exile the tall girl under the covers or into someone else's arms. Her other major fear is the dark despite her love of overnight camping, usually carrying a flashlight even for short hikes when off duty just in case and sleeping with a solar-powered nightlight.


Why Did They Come to Arborly?: Casey came to Arborley after her first lookout position went out of service after her first summer three years ago due to a fire the destroyed most of the forest and she was relocated to Arboley and has been coming since, making this her third year here

Background: Casey was born in Karlyle, Oregon and raised in a small town by her grandparents while her parents were often at work abroad and such. Her grandparents were very adventurous people and given their environment often took their granddaughter hiking and camping which she loved more than anything else yet. Growing up she wanted to be a pilot like her Dad until she was eighteen and getting ready for college. The tall girl was taking internships at the local wildlife center and National Parks when she wasn't going off on her own, but one day while assisting with bear tracking there was a call on Channel 16; a young woman had broken her leg while on one of the mountain trails and a storm was coming in but most importantly it was getting dark which meant no helicopter assistance. She instantly volunteered to go join the rescue team and headed up the trail with them, it was an expert trail and it pushed her more than her normal leisurely, carefree adventures. The pace was grueling but the injured hiker was a priority to her own pain. Once they got to the woman, bringing her back down was twice as hard as it was hiking up. It was dark and the storm loomed on the horizon which gave Casey terrible anxiety but she pushed through. Even at the lower and more accessible parts of the trail were more park staff showed up to help, she kept going. Many of them had broken down crying, tapping out from exhaustion or lack of mental stamina. Of the eleven of the original rescue team, she was only one of the three to make the full trip without stopping or switching out. That experience made her decide to postpone her dreams of being a pilot. Many things happened on that hike, in the darkness. Casey found herself on that mission, she knew what she wanted to do. Going into college she had switched one of her two majors to Geology, her other being Meteorology. Once finishing her two-year degree she immediately took Basic Training and became a Park Ranger. Taking a month in Winter, two in fall, two in spring and deciding to do ended up on Firewatch during the summer after her friend who was going to take the job fell ill and Casey didn't hesitate to take the position and has been doing it every summer since despite being relocated after her first summer.

His eyes are greenish-grey, and crinkle at the corners when he smiles. He often has bags under his eyes due to lack of sleep, and when he smiles, his dimples show. His skin is olive-toned with a good number of freckles on his face as well as on his shoulders. He's fit, and often wears tank tops to show off a bit. He has stubble along his jawline, and a snake tattoo on his right arm. On the left side of his neck, he has a birthmark that looks similar to a heart.

In regards to his outfit, usually he sticks to tank-tops and cargo shorts, with long socks and hiking boots with extra ankle support. He has a straw-color hat with a wide brim and an adjustable string to ensure he doesn't lose it. On sunny days, he has aviator sunglasses, and attached to his belt is usually a small bag filled with basic essentials, like a mini med kit and the like.

He likes to come up with weird ideas, theories, and conspiracies, and will talk about them to anyone willing to listen. He stays friendly and upbeat most of the time, but on off days will close himself off and seem like he has a lack of energy. These happen every once in a while, usually after prolonged socializing or after an emotional taxing period of time.

He's selfless, but to the point that its almost harmful. He puts others needs before his own to the extreme, seeing this as a sort of penance for himself. Despite this, though, he has a tendency to be dishonest, even about little things. This also extends to himself; sometimes, he isn't even truthful in his own head. Often, if something goes wrong and he's at the center of it, he will attempt to place the blame onto something or someone else, though usually the former. He goes out of his way to cheer people up and learn about them, but is hesitant to share anything about himself, often avoiding the subject entirely. He has trouble sleeping, and if bored enough, will bother people with odd questions at 2 am over one of the frequencies. Either that, or he'll go stargazing. Having time out in the sun makes him noticeably more energetic and, some could argue, more reckless.

He has an appreciation for nature, specifically plants, as shown through his choice of degree, and likes to go hiking on his own to get out of his head for a bit. He's also good with kids, and prefers them to adults, claiming that he likes their imaginations and their willingness to have fun and play pretend. His dream job was to hold an educational position in a park, but has turned to being a lookout over the summers. When given free time, he either likes to explore or work out new music on his guitar. background. Theodore's parents had wanted a girl. Because of this, his middle name was made Elizabeth, what they would've named a little girl but became one of Theo's childhood embarrassments. Not that he ever blamed his parents for it, of course. 2 years later, they ended up having a girl and naming her Veronica, thus completing what would be the Garcia family.

Theo grew up close with both his parents and sister, and had an interest in biology, specifically plants. Over his childhood, he ended up collecting a variety of houseplants and such, ranging from spider grass to succulents. This continued until he was in highschool, specifically near the end of sophomore year, when he fell into the wrong crowd. To make a long story short, he got involved with underage drinking and smoking, as well as gambling.

The last habit continued into college, when he went for his degree in environmental biology and took a year at a ranger school, and he ended up getting into debt and borrowing a lot of money from his parents, who kept giving it to him though they didn't have the income for it. This eventually led to them being unable to pay for some expensive medicine for his mother, and she ended up dying.

This was, of course, a turning point. Theo dropped drinking and gambling best he could, and worked to act in a way that was something akin to penance. However, he never would admit directly that he knew it was his fault. Instead he began to shift blame onto conspiracy theories in desperate hopes that people would agree with him and not be angry with him. The truth was, though, that he was the only person blaming himself for what happened, and everyone else pitied him.

He ended up going to Arborly to avoid the topic and people connected with it entirely. This way, he'd be able to avoid directly facing the fact that what he did was wrong, and even though he's made a change in his life and how he acts, he can't change what already happened.

Personality: Adam Henderson can be and is described as an introvert. He loves to do everything one introvert might enjoy doing, but he is also good at making friends if the other person’s personality fits well with his own. While he is described as an introvert, he can’t be described just as one. He has some characteristics which would put him on the extrovert part of the scale as well. For example, he does enjoy a party here and there, and he doesn’t mind being in crowded areas, like introverts usually do.

While Adam is a person who can talk endlessly about something he cares about, or just a random topic, he is known to quickly shut off or stop talking, as his social battery drains very easily, so he needs time to recharge it by being alone, writing, listening to music, etc.

He can be a different person once you get to know him. When you first meet him, he can be quite shy, and appear insecure, but once you become friends with Adam, he is that talkative person who has something to say about a wide range of topics.

Is This Their First Time as a Look Out for Arborly? Yes, but he did visit the park quite a few times before.

Reason of coming: While Adam might say he came to Arborly purely because he loves to be in nature, that might not be the whole truth. He does love to be in nature more than anything because it helps him write a lot better, but after his older brother died in a car crash, he needed to get away from his everyday life. Now, half a year later, coming to Arborly gave him that opportunity.

Background: Adam was born into a family of three, making it a family of four. His parents, George and Rebecca were thrilled to have another son, next to Israel, Adam’s older brother, who was three years older than Adam. They were nothing, but a perfect family living in the suburbs.

Both of his parents were top notch doctors, his mom, a family physician, and his dad, a surgeon, which meant that him and his brother always had everything the two wanted to have. Everything from the best toy cars for Christmas to a real car once he finally got his driver’s license. While Israel liked to use the money privilege a bit more than Adam, neither of the two boys was ever spoiled, and both of them were fully aware how lucky they were to have successful parents and a nice family.

When Adam started school, he knew that he was pretty smart as he didn’t have a lot of problems with handling the curriculum, which made him the center of attention for bullies. He was aware that the bullies were only jealous, but their words still hurt him a lot, which is why he had to switch schools three times until he finally started high school.

In high school, Adam had a much easier time, as he joined a bunch of clubs, and his high school didn’t have a lot of bullies. The ones who were in the school didn’t focus their attention on Adam because he was just one of the smart kids who would occasionally help them with their homework and tutoring.

It was in high school, in the Writers Club, where Adam was firstly introduced with the passion that is writing. He used to read stories and books, but he never thought he would be able to write his own, and when he finally started, nothing could stop him. He would write word after word, sentence after sentence, paragraph after paragraph, and so on. He would create worlds, characters, creatures, societies, and he loved to do so. He wasn’t much of a writer at the start, but after writing for hours after hours, he got better at it. A lot better at it.

Soon after that, he needed to choose what he would do with his life after high school, and his choice was, no surprise, being a writer. His parents didn’t love the idea since they wanted his son to be successful, but they didn’t stop him from doing it either, as they wanted his son to do what he wanted and what made him happy, which was obviously writing.

Almost two and a half years into college was when the car crash and Israel’s death happened. It was so hard on Adam, but he decided to stick it out in college for a while, before taking a gap year to focus on grieving his brother and just getting the fuck away from his mundane life.

Description: White male, relatively good shape but not overly so. Light brown hair going gray around the temples, short and messy, tends to stick up. Perpetual five o’clock shadow and soft, friendly features. Uniform is typically rumpled and unkempt; casual clothes are a kind of aging rocker aesthetic; jeans and black t-shirts, boots and flannels.

Personality: Jonah means well but can’t seem to get out if his own way. He’s friendly unless he’s in a mood, and tends to take everything in stride. He’s a stand up guy that life has gotten to sit down, and he’s done things in the past out of desperation that he’d rather not talk about. (Petty crime, letting down or betraying friends). All the same he’s still trying, despite being fairly jaded.

Likes: Weed, 90s rock from when he was young, alcohol, horror novels and movies, and loves dogs.

Dislikes: Authority, unwillingness to bend or react to the situation at hand rather than sticking by the rules; people who act tough, and country music.

Fears: Acid, irrelevance.

Skills: Jonah has been around the block and knows a little about a lot. He’s particularly intelligent and quick thinking, and learns very quickly. He has a particular focus on nature and wilderness survival.

Why Did They Come to Arborly? Jonah never stays on any career path for long; and his affinity for the wilderness and preference for solitude drew him to the firewatch. It also sounds like a bit of a vacation from his normal life.

Background: Jonah grew up in the suburbs near the woods; and spent much of his childhood outdoors. He was in boyscouts, where he learned many of his skills. In his teens he found himself drawn to music, and it took him out of the woods and into seedy situations. After unsuccessfully trying to get a music career going and developing some bad habits and worse friends; he tried to join the Marines at 23. He nearly completed basic training but washed out on a disciplinary infraction near the end. He fell into depression and his bad habits, and spent years bouncing from job to job, getting into trouble, and partying with the wrong people. In his early thirties, his friends got heavily into survivalism, and it reaffirmed and built upon his skills, as well as rekindled his love of nature. Now his toxic social circles have broken up, and his partying days are behind him, but he still has trouble holding down a job, and he’s never free from trouble for long. A few months alone in the woods earning honest pay sounds like a great opportunity.

Charlie was born in Olympia, Washington. She has an older sister of three years named Sammy, who is married and has a wolfdog named Shiloh. Charlie, a college dropout music major, wants more than anything to be a singer/songwriter. When she’s home, she works at her local radio station. Other than that, she spends a great deal of her time traveling with her sister and brother-in-law, blogging their low-budget ventures. Sammy is a professional photographer, and her husband is an environmental lawyer. They’re the ones who encouraged Charlie to take a job in Arborly over the summer following a bad breakup. Why Did They Come to Arborly? To prove to a certain someone that she could do it.

Background:
Suki's life, from childhood, was very much planned. There was a lot of pressure to succeed, get good grades, get into a good school, and become a doctor or a lawyer, or some other highly valued job. And for the most part, she followed that plan to a T. Suki had very few friends, dated a few times for the experience, but never for long. Relationships were a distraction that she had learned to not put a lot of weight into. And after what felt like an eternity of schooling, and training, and interning, Suki was finally beginning her tenure as a full fledged doctor in a small hospital in the middle of nowhere, somewhere in mid California. Life was... more or less good.

During her 2nd year of residency, Suki met the woman who would change her life for both the better and worst. They met at a mud run event that Suki was volunteering at. Barb fell hard and sprained her ankle, while Suki simply fell hard. Barb was an outdoorsy adventurous type. She was confident, did what she wanted, and had no qualms about pursuing the things she enjoyed in life, a mirror image of the kind of life Suki had settled for.

They complimented each other well and, after a few years, made plans to take their relationship to the next level in an entirely new state. Suki left her position at the hospital, while Barb was busy back at their apartment preparing for their move. However, when Suki returned home, the only thing she found was a note and an empty closet where Barb's things used to be. The note was long and emotional, it went on about how Barb had been having doubts for some time, and she assumed Suki was as well. She tried to justify her actions by telling Suki that she had to have realized they were incompatible, after all, Barb was a free spirit and Suki was just a city girl that always hated doing outdoorsy stuff. Suki didn't even bother finishing the note, most of what she had read was just Barb trying to make excuses about how it was Suki's fault for not trying harder, and how Barb wished things were different. It was all the usual platitudes from a coward unwilling to take the leap of faith.

Suki sat on their bed for hours, numb, thinking about her situation now that Barb was gone. She was 28, unemployed, single, about to be homeless, and for once in her life, had absolutely no direction. She could go back to the hospital and beg for her job back, but she had been so smug about leaving to pursue her own happiness, that she would rather starve on the street. She looked at the note again, and the more she read it, the angrier it made her. The angrier she got, the more clarity about her situation returned. Suki looked at her situation and realized that she had a pretty substantial savings, very few bills, and a willingness to show someone up. From that moment, Suki vowed that she would spend the next year traveling and doing the outdoorsy stuff Barb was always talking about, that way if they ever met again, Suki could throw that city girl comment back into her face. The year would be full of activities like scuba diving, learning to fish, firearms training, marathons, and so much more, all of it ending with that damn 3 month trip to Arborly National Park to volunteer at one of the firewatch towers that Barb wouldn't stop talking about last year. That would be the ultimate "F U," and she would absolutely enjoy every second of it.

Why Did They Come to Arborly? She needed a job for the summer.

Background: Victoria grew up with her single mother, Amelia May. Her father had left the picture when he found out Amelia was pregnant. Victoria's mother was kind, but not around much as she worked a lot to provide for her. This lead to Victoria being lonely a lot as a child. However, her loneliness didn't last too long. In her early school years she was outgoing and well liked, making many friends. She won many people over with her sense of humor. She was a smart kid, and took a liking to writing. In high school she was head of the newspaper. She wrote a humorous advice column, which was popular among her classmates. She also ran on the track team and continues to enjoy running to this day. She enjoyed being social and popular in high school. Victoria was known as the one you could always come to for a good laugh or count on for an honest opinion. When she was old enough, she got a part time job as a waitress to help pay for her college.

In her college years, she studied journalism. She was still outgoing and well liked, but focused more on her studies. She'd worked hard to get into and be able to afford college, she wasn't going to waste it on partying all night and skipping class. However, Victoria would still talk anyone's ear off in her spare time. She also started dating Harrison Stone. It was a lovely relationship, with frequent romantic dates and small gifts. Later on, it started to fade a little, but they continued on with their relationship. When she got out of college she worked as a secretary for a magazine company. It wasn't particularly enjoyable and she always wanted more, but it payed surprisingly well.

After four years of dating Harrison, when she was 26, he proposed. She was shocked at first, but it made her realize she didn't want to spend her life with him. She declined and ended the relationship. A month after the breakup, she decided it was time for a change. Victoria quit her safe job as a secretary and searched for a writing job. She crashed with friends for the couple months of searching until she got hired to write an advice column for a magazine, just like the good old days. She loved her job, and worked hard at it. She also remained her outgoing self at work, making friends with (and annoying) her co workers. Her life seemed great for the next three years. She had a fantastic job, god friends, she was single, but went on dates pretty often. It was like a dream. It didn't last though. When someone with a large following and more experience said they'd write the advice column, Victoria was fired. She was angry at first, but soon realized that she just needed to get on with her life. She took the first job she could find for the summer, which happened to be a lookout position. This isn't exactly the ideal situation for her, but she's determined to make the best of things. She's especially exited to meet new people. ​

Why Did They Come to Arborly? Growing up in a national forest, she figured this would be perfect for her.

Background: Ramona was born in Mesa, AZ to a Jewish mother and a Presbyterian father. Having been born with Waardenberg's syndrome that she inherited from her mother, she was always deaf in one ear and had mismatched eyes. Having been told that surgery wasn't a viable option to alleviate the deafness, Ramona has had a hearing aid since she was old enough to use one. When she was five, her grandparents passed away, causing both parents to move to back to Michigan where they were originally from. Things were normal until Ramona was 8, when her mother began an affair and her parents got a prompt divorce.

When this happened, Ramona's life fell apart. She was put in the middle and essentially used as a communicator between both parents. Her mother was bipolar, and she often times would refuse to take her medication out of paranoia. Her father moved two hours away and wasn't able to see her much, and Ramona was left to deal with the fallout. Many men came and went during the next year, making her generally very distrusting. Ramona's mother got hooked on pain killers, which turned into a horrible heroin addiction. This addiction led to her mother's death when she was 12, and she was taken by the state and placed with her father. Her father lived in the Huron National Forest in a cabin that was originally built by his parents before the land was declared government property. There are maybe only seven to ten other homes in the area. Here, she was taught how to trust and love again through fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and being one with nature.

In high school, Ramona excelled in reading and writing, as well as biology. She graduated at one of the top three spots in her class of 150, and she was on the track team as a cross-country runner. She got into her dream university and attended four years, graduating with a bachelor's degree in environmental science with a special focus in freshwater ecosystems. For a long time, she worked for the DNR in her home town for the Huron National Forest, however for a change of scenery, she decided to apply at Arborly and get far away from home to meet some new and fresh faces, and maybe even start over again. ​

Description: Adam is an ageing man with bits of white on his brown hair. His skin was well tanned, he's very tall, and he has broad shoulders and a muscular structure, although he has a growing stomach after quitting the police force, choosing to relax and start eating more fatty food. On the right side of his cheek was a scar he got from an encounter with a deranged person who murdered their wife.

Personality: Adam is the basic straight man. As an ex-cop of a harsh and crime-ridden city, he has a rigid outlook on the world and people in general, but always try to see to good in things even if it seems hopeless as his wife always told him. He hates those who break the law and those who have no respect for authority, which he dubs as "Young Punks" as the majority of them he encountered are either teenagers or young adults. This is Adam's first time as a lookout.

Why Did They Come to Arborly?
He wanted a job right after quitting the police force, choosing a job that he believed would lack stress and calm his nerves after years of police works.

Background:
Adam grew up in the city of Detroit and when he was young, he looked up to his dad who was a well-known cop in the city. However, when he grew up and joined the police force, he realised the job wasn't all glamour and being a hero, instead, it was all about keeping in check of sick people and only receiving thanks through being referred to as racist pigs and fascist maniacs.

One of the most traumatic experiences he had in the job was dealing with a cult group when he was only a rookie. The group kidnapped him, stripped him naked and tied him up, dropping him underwater and almost drowned to death until he was saved. Since then he had grown a paranoia around water.

Years of police work had made him grow a hatred for his job, his city and people in general, believing the world couldn't be redeemed and there's no good in it. That was until he met Alyssa, his best friend and his lover. She was the only who was able to bring joy in his life through unconditional kindness and passion, holding a strong belief that there's always good to be found, no matter how miserable it may seem. In a room engulfed in the dark, you could always find light somewhere, you just have to open your eyes and look for it.

His life only got better when he married Alyssa and gave him the best gifts a man could ask for, their two children Anna and Mike. Despite this, however, his outlook on the world was still clouded because of his job and the harassment he receives from these "Activists" slowly getting to his head, forcing him to quit his job for his mental health.

This led him into taking a job as a lookout at Arborly to hopefully take a break from all the hardships from his old job while still providing income for his family. He felt that this was the right job for him as his experience in hunting allows him to effectively traverse the forest and his experience as a cop will help him lookout for anything suspicious.
