The sound of the communicator turning on and crackling, finding its frequency in this thick fog brought a huge sigh of relief to Sabrossa. She saw the yellow light of the device and began to speak through the communicator.

"Hello...Hello?" She said, the cracking sound of the communicator made her a bit wary if anyone understood her btu she continued on, "This is Sabrossa Sarapa Umaire, R&D Staff of the Crimson Raiders ID:2345xxxxxxxx xxx xxxxxxxx. If anyone can hear this, I request rescue. I repeat, I request rescue. We were attacked while about to land by--" She stopped as she looked around her, feeling like time was running short once more. Running and hiding has been her daily routine since she woke up in this forest, and it seems like she had to do it once more.

"I will explain in a bit. However, I am sending the coordinates to this area. Please dispatch someone to send for help. Area is toxic and there are no predatory animals, however---" She stopped as that thing had come from above, and she had little time but to let go, watching it get smashed into pieces.

Dammit. At least the coordinates were sent.

Time was up however, and she had to start running again.

The sound of the chopper could only be heard as a soft rumble from within the transport. High above the clouds, the transport was making its way to its destination. The coordinates where the forest was. Outside, you could see nothing but the blue sky above with the clouds hanging below, it almost seemed empty.

"We're almost there," Rudolph, the pilot who introduced himself earlier before departing, said to the soldiers behind him, "I admit, being in this part of the place makes me a bit nervous. Sgt. Umaire was the type who liked to pressure us pilots into bringing her farther and farther from the territory. Higher command kept rejecting her requests though." He commented, but there was a slight bitterness in his voice that was tempered by the casual way he delivered his words.

In the distance, tips of mountains could be seen, the trees growing radiantly in the sunlight. But before you could take a closer look, the chopper began to descend.

"Before we left, command had placed markers for us to land on. The hostile seems to only attack within the forest so we're going to have to land a bit farther from it." He said, explaining the sudden landing. The chopper began to go down the thick clouds that swirled overhead, before entering an area with such thick fog. What you can see in the distance was the forest; tall, sickly looking trees grew with little leaves on their branches but the tip seemed to pierce the clouds and reach the sky. There was no sound the moment the chopper landed and shut of its rotors. The wind was dead, but you could feel the coolness pass your suit and touch the hairs of your skin.

The place was quiet. So very, very quiet.

"I'm going to hang here until you guys return. Inform me through the communicator if you're close." Rudolph said as stretched his legs on to the other side of the seat. "Good luck finding her, stay safe."

The Forest

As you near the trees, you notice what Filosofia had mentioned: Poor, rocky soil that seemed in desperate need of water, and small mushrooms that grew beneath the trees. The forest itself seemed to stretch on and on, leaving no clue if there was an end for the forest. But if your eyes are sharp, you can see certain things: pieces of metal and plastics that looked similar like the chopper you rode on, small footprints that looked like it came from a woman, and nicks on the trees, forcefully carved then abandoned as if they had been found.

A shiver of excitement ran up Evie's spine as she looked down on the fog, despite her nervousness. The rising sun made the fog beautiful, albeit a bit creepy. As they flew Evie sketched a bit in her notebook, slipping it back into her MOLLE when Rudolph began the descent.

The first thing Evie noticed was the oppressive silence that reigned in the gloomy forest. Without the whir of the helicopter, the air felt cold and breathless.

Like death, Evie thought. How Sgt. Umaire could survive out here, she wasn't sure. She didn't know how anything survived in the dry forest, actually. Not enough water, no sunlight or green leaves for photosynthesis...

If this was how it always was, the trees had to be getting nutrients some other way. Evie amused herself by thinking of ways as the others unloaded. Maybe underwater lakes? Nutrients in the ground? The mushrooms seemed to be doing fine, and those usually grew in wet areas. Strange.

@CoconutLeaves

Randus grunted as he stood inside the chopper. He rummaged through his MOLLE to find his octopede drone and its controller.

"What do you think?"

He said to Evie, as he turned the drone on and made it crawl around the floor of the chopper for a bit. He didn't get much chance to use it, and now seemed like the right time.

"I think I'll use it as a scout. Maybe crawl around few meters ahead of us."

He said. He checked the camera function. Perfect.

@Musical Dragon @CoconutLeaves

"That's a nifty drone you got there." Rudolph commented as Randus tested his drone.

Far into the forest, where you can see the trees slowly rise up among the others, you can see a red light rise up in the sky and pierce through the thick clouds of monoxide. It was the same light that comes from a flare gun, and you can see it stay in the air before dimming and going down.

"Guess the sargeant's alive." Rudolph commented after whistling.

@Commissar Darman @randomizedrp @Musical Dragon

"Nice. Just what I wanted to hear."

Said Randus, as he calculated the distance with his not-so-professional mathematical skills. He placed a marker on his hud, which didn't have much to show. He crossed his fingers for a short time and put his drone back into his MOLLE, and hollstered the controller on the outer part of the bag. He then prepared to explore, and waited for others to get off the chopper.

"That's brilliant!" Evie said with a smile as she watched the drone. "The more eyes we have looking, the better. If Sgt. Umaire is out there, we need to find her as soon as possible." Evie wasn't so sure they'd find her alive, but finding her either way was important.

As they landed and Evie watched the trees, she saw a red light flash up high in the fog. "Look!" she called, drawing everyone's attention. Amazingly, it looked to be a flare from what could only be Sgt. Umaire. She's alive.

"The fog must have carried the sound of the helicopter," Evie mused. "If she's smart, she'll stand still." Already the light was fading, but not before Evie marked its direction. With a little luck, they could keep heading in that direction until they found her.

@CoconutLeaves @randomizedrp

Komodo Rhino leaped down the chopper and immediately scanned their surroundings, thermals on and rifle up ready for combat.

He ignored the heat signatures of Evie and Randus before him and focused on the areas where the fog was thickest. He followed the foot-prints a little ways away from the squad and found a way-mark in the trees and pinned the location in his mini-map; the rest of his comrades were green little arrows in his HUD.

"Found her trail." said Komodo Rhino.

The endless trees coupled with the thick fog being the only thing you could see could have made you think you were lost.

Again, there was no sound, save for the soft footsteps that you make with your teammates. There seemed to be no other creature, and you wondered what Sgt.Umaire could have been attacked by. As you keep going, you finally see something.

It was a group of insects, the size of german shepherds. They were crawling around the ground, some climbing on the trees, trying to reach for the few, green leaves that existed on the trees. They noticed the team, but did not attack. They merely continued, biting on the mushrooms and the leaves.

One looked at the team and began to fly to them, curious at the creature it has never seen before. It's wings were translucent, almost invisible were it not for the white edges that gave as the outline for the insect. However, you can't help but notice, even as it was close to you, that there was no sound that came from the flapping of the wings. If you hadn't seen it, you wouldn't have noticed it was there.

Sarah was trailing the rest of the group acting as rear guard. The moment she got off the chopper Sarah just didn't like how quiet it was. it was so eerily quiet that her suit was only picking up the rest of the squad which got her thinking. Why was everything so quiet? catching movement in her peripherals Sarah spun around with her carbine raised. Lowering her weapon, Sarah watched the bugs with mild interest as her suit recorded everything. after about a minute or so and with one of them flying towards them Sarahs smile disappeared. again, deathly quiet, Why? they seemed to be plant eaters so why be so damn quiet? shutting off her external speakers Sarah radioed the squad. " Hey, This might be Paranoia setting in. But watch how much sound you put out."

Sarah's voice seemed unreasonably loud, making Evie start. She had been focused on the bugs the size of dogs who, like everything else here, seemed to move without sound. Eerie.

"Rodger that, Sarah," Evie responded in a whisper, turning down the volume in her suit. With everything so silent here, loud noises would attract unwelcome attention.

As she walked by, one of the bugs turned to watch, its antenna waving. Suddenly it stiffened, sensing something she could not, then sped away into the fog. The others followed suit, making no noise and leaving behind little sign of their existence. What startled them? Evie wondered. If we didn't scare them, what did? Feeling even more cautious, Evie scanned their surroundings once more.

@Commissar Darman

"Copy, Sarah." said Komodo Rhino who switched his rifle into two-handed plasma axe mode.

He ignored the bug and moved forward cautiously.

"I heard you studied Biology-or something like that, Evie," said Komodo Rhino, quietly, "what kind of creatures you think are in here?"

@Commissar Darman , @Musical Dragon

(OOC: @CoconutLeaves , does the bug show up in Komodo Rhino's thermals?)

The sound came quickly, like a knife slicing into the air. It landed on each of the team members, mere inches from their bodies, and slamming strongly into the ground that dust rose up. Once the dust has settled you noticed that what landed near you was the tip of the tree. You look at the source and see that the tree had bent, so to speak, like a flexible tentacle. Near Evie, the tree had skewered a insects with its sharp tip, and near Randus it skewered the drone, and slowly the tip of the trees rose up and a rumbling could be heard on the ground.

Dust puffed up and fell to the side as a hole opened before the team. The moment it did, insects from every direction swarmed to it, their legs silently but quickly bringing them to the middle of the hole. If you decide to look at the hole you see two wooden basins. The drone and the beetle that had been skewered were dropped into the right basin filled with bird carcasses and insect carapace. The basin began to produce a greenish liquid that began to rise higher and higher, and you can see the carcass of the birds slowly dissolve. In the other basin was a large pool of crystal clear liquid. If you were familiar with the sight, you would realize that it was a large pool of pure water. The insects gathered around both basins, picking of remains and taking enough liquid.

(It depends really. The insects here are cold blooded. Also, apologies, there was a blackout here, no electricity for two hours.)

"Yeah I did Earth studies for four years," Evie said to Komodo. "If this is like the marshes and wetlands of old, then we can expect some larger creature that these bugs scavenge from. But there are no easy nutrients here. Whatever-"

She was cut off as the trees seemed to suddenly come alive. Evie screamed as a tentacle branch slammed into the insect beside her. All the bugs were now returning, swarming around a hole opening before them. Like flies to fresh meat, the bugs covered the tree's new hole, giving Evie only glimpses of what lay below.

The process made her think of a Venus Fly Trap from Old Earth, which dissolved its prey before drinking it. The green liquid seemed to work the same way, plus it collected precious water. No wonder the bugs were swarming.

Evie backed away from the hole, watching the tentacles carefully. If the trees decided they should be added to the acid soup, they were in big trouble. "What do we do?" she whispered into her comm, trying to locate the others. The landscape had changed with the shifting of the trees, plus the fog made visibility low. "Guys?"

@CoconutLeaves @Zer0

Komodo Rhino backed away silently, taking note of the reaching distance of the tree. He marked its location on the mini-map. He wondered if the tree would automatically jab at something that came within that reaching distance.

Picking up a boulder, he tossed it to the side of the tree.

@CoconutLeaves

Randus grunted.

"Crap."

He complained. He stayed still, and made as few movements as he could to grab his gun.

"If we get back with a lot of new data, I deserve another drone."

He said through the comms. As the place was silent, he found making noise not a good idea. He then looked at his gun. Noisy.

"Any advices on firing a minigun silently?"

He asked.

The tree's strength smashed through the boulder as soon as it made a sound on the ground, crushing it into two. Every noise uttered, even through whispers, seemed to make the trees tense; pinpointing, accurately checking before deciding to strike. It wasn't long before the insects scattered as the hole had closed, dust trailing along and covering the spot once more as if nothing was there. The insects however remained in their area, continuing their activities.

Sarah nearly blew the tip of the tree off that skewered the insect. It happened so suddenly that she was caught completely off guard. Now she was watching a hole open up right in front of them. intrigued by it, Sarah quietly walked up to the edge and observed what was below. "oh the boys back home are gonna love this." She stated, forgetting her comms were open. before she could attempt to do any deep scan though. Sarah was once again caught off guard by the trees strikes. followed by the pit disappearing. Rapidly looking between where both the boulder landed and where the pit used to be, Sarah finally processed what just happened. "Damn it Guys, Can you warn a girl before doing something like that?" she radioed while throwing her hands into the air. " I could have sworn i said try not to make noise."

"This forest seems impassable . . ." said Komodo Rhino, watching the trees tense up to even a whisper. There was no way they could go through a forest of either sound or vibration-sensitive trees without making a noise, unless they burned everything. "I'm going to look for a cave, maybe there's an underground path through this mountain."

@CoconutLeaves

Randus grunted. Again.

"Why don't we throw a small rock to a tree and duck?"

He suggested, as he looked around. Damge must be minimal, but as long as they could survive. Right....?

"Uhh..... I'll cancel the suggestion, on second thought."

He said. The fog was obscuring their vision. It was a wonder how their rescue target survived. It would be more like them rescued by her.

If one has sharp eyes, one can make out an image somewhere among the trees, a small little hole big enough for a person to fit. In a land full of trees, fog, and dirt, the small hole stood out from among the rest. Could it be like the hole from earlier, or was there something within it that could make the rescue all the more easier, like a cave?

In the crushed boulder, you see the tree has not risen like before, and notice that a good portion of the tree had been crushed from the impact of the boulder. The trees among them suddenly seemed to waver, as if wincing from pain and wondering what had afflicted them. Even the whispers didn't seem to register among the trees. They seemed distracted. Much ground could be covered in their pain.

"I'm checking out that hole." said Komodo Rhino. He sneaked his way to it, plasma axe ready in case he blundered and crawled inside.

The hole was a classic dark abyss. One could not see anything inside it. But perhaps that is a good thing. A dark hole means it is a deep hole, and that something leads to it.
