Trying to understand who So-Hee is like facing a safe box with the most difficult mechanism to open it. Showing just what she wants you to see is the way she rules her way of presenting herself to everyone around her. Shielding herself and locking her feelings is just a way to cope with the storm that she is in her inside.
Confidence, perceptive, and poise are the adjectives that people usually used to describe So-Hee. But in reality, she is more than that with a dedicated nature; she is someone that takes pride in her achievements, someone that values honesty and loyalty as an important core to build her relationships.
She is the type of person to not let her feelings into the equation and reigns her decisions based on facts what her head believes is the best for her while still following her principles. For So-Hee there’s not a thing for second-guessing, so adventuring into something unknown only happens when she is confident that things would turn out well or she feels extremely passionate about it. But even if all the odds are in her favor; there’re instances when she would feel that nothing would go according to her plan and the feeling of failure takes over her clouding what’s really in front of her.
But even if So-Hee seems like the type of person who has everything under control on the inside; she is in a turmoil of intense emotions, trying their best to finally break free and just the idea of showing her vulnerability terrifies her. But with the constant feeling of suffocation of having to live under the expectations of what her dead brother could have achieved; is forming cracks in the perfect facade that she crafted carefully to protect her heart.
Her calm seas hold storms in her depths; clashing waves of expectations and wants — hidden vulnerabilities that could never meet the sky. everything is anchored down, but so is she, and she’s drowning.

So-Hee was born as the second and youngest daughter of Baek Dae-Seong, a cellist, and Cho Hae-Won, a clarinetist, and both were part of The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. Since a young age, So-Hee lived in a world of luxury and privileges thanks to the position of her parents; but despite the status they had. She and her brother were raised to be grateful for what they had and know that all of this was because of hard work.
For as long as she can remember, she and her older brother Jae-Sung were surrounded by music; a discipline that her parents made sure that both of her children become knowledgeable and all the memories she had a violin were always part of them; an instrument that she chose to follow up the steps of her older brother, but that as time passed and she grew up. She realized that maybe it would have been better to be anything other than a violinist.
So-Hee loved playing the violin. It was incredible how that instrument became part of her happiness, but as time passed and music stopped being just a fun activity to do after school and more of a discipline. That’s when she realized how difficult it would be for her; although she was told how talented she was and how she could master tough pieces, she was never enough compared to Jae-Sung who people even mentioned sometimes that he had an innate talent and how he was destined to reach for the stars if he wanted.
But despite the comparisons, the siblings never grew apart and Jae-Sung became one of her biggest supporters that believed that So-Hee would make it no matter how hard it would be. The years passed, and she was accepted into a well-known arts institution. It was there when she started making a name for herself while her brother was already making his way towards the goal of becoming the first chair in The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
Everything was falling into the right place, but that was until the accident happened. She still remembered receiving a text message from her brother telling her he would be home soon, but he never arrived. So-hee’s world crumbled into pieces as the person who was her anchor was gone. His death left an empty space in everyone and the constant voices of how he could have achieved so much if he would have made it. But the time passed and Jae-Sung became just a memory, one that still followed So-Hee as she was now the one to live up to him and the expectation that people had over him.
But in the process of living up two dreams and the unresolved feelings that were bottled inside her, she started losing herself. It wasn’t until she found out songwriting was her way of expressing how she really felt. Sharing her emotions through the lyrics and her voice became therapeutic for her and realized that maybe there was a light at the end of the tunnel that she still loved music. But her path wasn’t to live all her life in an orchestra despite her passion for the violin.
She started writing and composing songs and became an independent artist while still holding her place in the orchestra. But it didn’t take long until the rumors of her second choice of career and once again all the eyes were on her, hoping that she would break down and leave the position. The suffocation inside her became almost unbearable but when a scouter reached out to her with the proposition that the entertainment company was interested in her and the possibility of participating in the ost of a movie. So-Hee accepted in a blink of an eye, and for the first time in a long time she felt alive.

So-hee's relationship with her father was never actually a close one; growing up he was always the one that was stricter and less expressive of her parents; making his priority being able to provide a successful future for his children and making sure they had everything to make it out in the world. After the accident, their relationship became strained as he started to pressure So-hee even more to fulfill everything he once pictured for her brother. With the unexpected change of path of So-hee, he has made it clear that he is not happy with the idea of his daughter leaving everything to become a singer. While he hasn't taken drastic measures to make his daughter go back to be a classical musician, he has done enough with the silent and disinterested treatment that hides the real words that she is just a disappointment to him.
Cho Hae-Won
So-hee for sure was closer to her mom while growing up, while they weren't exactly the tightest duo of mother and daughter, she believed her mother was someone she could trust and would be next to her no matter what. But after the accident, she became numb at everything around her, she tried her best to cope with the loss of her own son but the pain and sadness took away the kind and loving mother she once was replacing her with a pretender with a painful smile that while is trying her best for her daughter, the sorrow was bigger than their relationship and they grew apart while still caring deeply for the other. While she is not completely against So-hee's dream of becoming a singer, she can't exactly be her biggest supporter, as deep down she wants So-hee to continue being a violinist to reminiscence her lost son.
baek Jae-Sung
Jae-Sung was once So-Hee's biggest confidant, the pair of siblings were there for the other no matter what. Her older brother was her anchor in everything while growing up, from telling her that she shouldn't be discouraged because she wasn't playing a piece in perfection, to sneaking snacks together when her mother said they couldn't eat them, to even punching the guy that broke for the first time So-hee's heart. With a tight bond, the siblings believed they would be part of the other's achievements until they were old but none of them expected that a car accident would end their relationship in the blink of an eye destroying everything and everyone around them.
hong ji-ah
A stranger that became a familiar face in So-Hee's life at least through social media after they meet for the first time in one of the concerts that the orchestra she was part of was having, the two of them kept in touch sporadically not really keeping updated what the other was doing. While they are not the closest of friends So-Hee was happy to see someone she knows in this kind of place.
jang hakju
A reminder of the past, So-Hee has known Hakju since high school when they happened to be in the same art institution, although they were in different departments, his name wasn't unknown to her as she heard about him through her classmates and friends they had in common, despite all of this they never became close, but the girl admits that Hakju was one of the most talented of his department when they studied together.

found out some interesting things about myself today!

an optimistic fool; there seems to be no other good explanation for a girl as kind and unbattered by life's troubles as hong ji-ah. you might argue she's simply gotten extremely lucky, even if her fortune has been anything but such, though the true nature of her almost-there-success lies in unfalteringresilience. an undying pursuit of her dream, even as she trips constantly over the rough roads of life, all with a beaming smile on her face.
(there's something fake about her smile these days, even if ji-ah knows she's feeling genuine joy...)
exceptionallykindandbrightby nature, ji-ah is the type of girl to light up any room. she seems to navigate every conversation with ease, but seems practiced inholding everyone at arm's length, as if she is far too accustomed to being self-sufficient to even entertain the concept of an ally. there seems to be nothing that could dampen her sunny disposition, save for a closed door. it's not completely a front, but it sure is worn out. an undeniablepeople-pleaserbecause she loves seeing a smile, but also because she despises conflict— she'd always been particularly tuned to sensing anger and irritation, and perhaps it is in her nature to belittle her own feelings.
yet, despite the showers of praise she receives these days, ji-ah's measure of her own self-worth has plummeted over the years. even the strongest boulders will eventually be eroded by a constant wave, and it seems every word of criticism weighs infinitely more than the most boundless compliments. despite her penchant forself-doubt, she adamantly clings on to her dreams and chases itearnestly; that even if her talents aren't acknowledged doesn't mean they're not there. there's no denying thebitternessthat has emerged, if just barely, through it all, but her gentleness won't allow anything to come out of it.

she was a girl with her life all set out for her. on the cusp of graduating with a most prestigious degree, only to be unceremoniously thrown out of her house when she fell for the sweet lies of the wrong man. he promised her a brilliant, amorous future if only she would take his hand— she did, and plunged headfirst. kwon ji-ah is three months old when she becomes hong ji-ah, and in the desolate little apartment remains only mother and daughter.
for much of her time growing up, ji-ah didn't know what happened to her father. he was as real to her as the monster in her closet, an existence that plagued her mind but must be kept secret: the mention of it would only upset her mother, who was already so terribly tired from work. her mother didn't have much energy to even listen to her daughter on most days, much less deal with such needless questions. ji-ah practically raised herself, in that sense, spending most of her pre-school days alone and doing what she could around the house, wordlessly avoiding her mother when she was home, in case she proved an even further eyesore.
the stuffiness of the house eased up slightly when she started school. her mother had finally found a new, stable job, and with their finances at least somewhat settled, her tone softened alongside her smile, her hand just that bit more inviting even as ji-ah worried to reach out. school began as a welcome change of pace, a breath of fresh air amidst the confines of her desperately lonely home, though the classrooms offer no consolation. the whispers of a single mother had been spreading through the small community since she was a toddler, and ji-ah should've known better, considering the struggle she had with the shopkeepers every time she went out to buy groceries. she kept her head down and ignored the sneers and jeers that followed her through the hallways, focusing on doing well even as the teachers questioned every good grade. living as if she were invisible.
her mother was called to the office once, and once only. ji-ah had pushed someone at the playground, and the other's parents were furious. "how are you raising your daughter? if you're going to have children before marriage, at least do it well."
her mother had slapped her in the hallway outside of the office, any of ji-ah's protests falling on deaf ears and returned in threats of kicking her out if she talked back more. nevermind that her legs were covered in scratches while the boy who had called her mother a whore had come out reasonably unscathed. her mother tended to her wounds in silence, and ji-ah knew the tears that she struggled to keep from flowing weren't caused only by the stinging alcohol on her kneecaps. "don't do that again, dear. don't get hurt over something trivial." her mother's words were soft, exhausted.
it was anything but, but ji-ah muted the words that threatened to slip with a choked sob.
come high school, still stuck in the confines of her bitterly small town, ji-ah took solace in the world of theatre. the bullying rescinded with age, though ji-ah got neither apologies nor company from her peers, old or new. she played the rightful part of a fool, smiling her brightest even as the only exchanges she had throughout school days never went beyond the most basic of interactions, save for a senior in the theatre club who seemed unaffected by the rumours surrounding her family. the only time she wasn't listless in school was during her time on stage, crying her heart out as lady macbeth to lines so carefully penned by han tae-sook.
every time the lines blurred between her and her character, ji-ah felt free— released from every trouble that plagued her reality until the curtains fell once again. an oasis of lies so blissful she wished the lights stayed on forever and the applause never came. it always did, as performances tend to go, but ji-ah loved it anyways, in all of its transience and breath-taking beauty. she didn't sleep a wink the first night of the performance she was finally cast as lead, her stomach still churning from the exhilaration.
this was it; it, like nothing she'd ever felt before and everything she'd ever come to love.
she had been expecting more of an outburst from her mother when she told her this was what she wanted to pursue, but her reaction was surprisingly mellow, because her mother had a revelation of her own to share. she'd met a man— a nice one, this time. she didn't know if they were going to get married, or anything, but they were seeing each other. in a committed relationship. ji-ah had sat uneasily in her chair the first time she met him, (though he was as nice as her mother had made him out to be), because it would no longer be just the two of them; because her mother's smile looked so bright compared to any of the tired ones she ever offered to her.
perhaps it contributed to how quickly ji-ah took off. she bid farewell to her mother and her senior and headed to seoul focused solely on achieving her dream. bright-eyed and possibly far too tunnel-visioned didn't make for a good start, nor a good middle: ji-ah spent most of her years under the first no-name company who offered to manage her, fighting to stay motivated amidst the numerous rejections and constant relegations to smaller roles. it's one thing to be rejected once or twice, it's another to unwillingly expect a rejection after each audition— and each failure struck at her confidence repeatedly, until all that was left of her drive was desperation and fear. even as the others signed to the company started to realise their situation and leave, ji-ah stayed on, unwilling to even entertain such thoughts, because the moment she gave up, it would be as if every second of those past years meant nothing.
it would turn out leaving wouldn't be her choice either, when the company inevitably went bankrupt from an embezzlement scandal or another. it seemed life was determined for ji-ah to plummet towards rock-bottom before it would send her a lifeline in the form of a hg&fine scouting agent. one contract later and a nerve-wracking audition later, ji-ah lands her first significant role in her lacklustre career. it's not a breakthrough, but it's something, and it means so much to her she nearly cried the first time she held her script.
the horizon finally begins to glitter again, and with her newest casting in a lead role so dear to her heart; this was it. the it she'd been waiting years for.
tl;dr
raised by a single mother, bullied throughout her schooling years, found a love for acting in high school, moved to seoul to pursue her dream ♡, signed on to a shitty company and ended up not getting a single significant role for ~4 years, signed with hg&fine ent. and finally, finally made progress.

ji-ah and hakju are represented by the same agency, and the two met for the first time when ji-ah first signed a contract with hg&fine. they've unwittingly fallen into a buddy-buddy type system with their roles, with her first big-ish role as a supporting character on a drama where hakju had played the lead, and it seems fate has paired them together again. they're not really friends, but ji-ah respects him greatly as a sunbae and cherishes his advice and company.

ji-ah is a long-time fan of so-hee as a classical musician. she chanced upon the other girl's concert while on a wholly disastrous date and fell in love with her artistry instantaneously, doing her best to catch up on her shows as much as she could amidst brushing up on her acting and trying to pay rent. ji-ah and so-hee met face-to-face at her third concert attendance when she managed to catch the violinist after the show for an autograph, where the two ended up trading social medias. they're still mutuals, but aren't quite familiar with the other's activities— it's a bit of a shock to run into one another on set.

jang jiwoo was a capable woman, a woman of purpose and calculation. she did not make mistakes, and if she did she never made them again. this was a trait she took pride in having, a reputation she'd fought hard to create and maintain.
the result of the pregnancy test, therefore, stung her like a slap in the face. because under the low lights of the hotel room and the influence of well-aged wine, led on by that man's smile, she had done a terrible thing. not once, not twice, not even thrice. and now here was the consequence staring back at her; an error, she realized, that she could neither overwrite nor erase.

it was mutedly accepted in the jang household that hwiseung was a harbinger of bad luck. this was the excuse they used to explain why his father treated him like a ghost (didn't you know? they almost got a divorce when he was born) or why he rarely spoke a word at family reunions (he's so different from his siblings, so gloomy).
at seven years old, hwiseung had begun to vaguely understand that this was his problem, his fault. that must be why his parents didn't come to his school recital (it's okay, honey, you can watch the video with them instead) and why they loved his siblings more (just let your brother have it, hwiseung, don't be so selfish).
he googles the words he overheard and realizes that he can't fix himself, because an omen is something you just are.

jang hwiseung was bullied and a loner. at home, his brother gave him hell, constantly flaunting his self-proclaimed superiority and taking advantage without a care. at school, people thought he was weird; he's too quiet, and he looks like a girl.
staying out of people's way was the only thing he did actively and well. one day, he failed even at that. hwiseung hadn't meant to push his classmate that hard, but he did, and the boy hit his head again the edge of the lockers. both their parents were called in, and among them the most furious was not the guardian of the injured party, but dr. jang.
that night, unable to sleep from the remnant pain of the cane's strikes, he walked down to the kitchen with thoughts of a warm glass of milk. downstairs, however, was faintly lit. harsh whispers floated up to his keen ears, and he snuck toward where his parents were arguing, heart clenched.
"stop," his mother cried.
"he's your son." the words sounded like an accusation, "you know better than i do."
"he's your son, too!"
"no, he's not," the man hissed, "he's an intruder, just like his real father."
their fight continued, and perhaps that was why they never noticed the rushed patter of feet headed to the front door or the sound of it shutting behind a fleeing figure. their son had run away.
hwiseung's panicked sprint turned into an aimless wandering as time passed on, the city lights pulsing in the middle of the night. eventually, he came to a stop, curling up in a hidden corner of a narrow alley. he sat and he waited, his thoughts going wild with fear and confusion. but nobody came looking for him, because nobody cared about jang hwiseung.
nobody wanted to know where jang hwiseung was. nobody loved- no, nobody even liked jang hwiseung. gloomy, quiet, timid, weird jang hwiseung. the omen, jang hwiseung. intruder, jang hwiseung.

as the line left his lips, he mistook it for a lesson; an absolving of his guilt for pretending to be something that he wasn't. the audience applauded as if in agreement, and the lights gave him one final embrace before fading away.

he agreed. even as he lay in bed that night, he couldn't forget the feeling. all the time he'd spent trying to be a different version of himself couldn't compare to the catharsis of that single moment when he, standing alone on the stage, became truly someone else. the dizzying high, the ecstasy of the escape, when he was free from the bonds of his identity, even if it were only for a fleeting second.
it would be two weeks of melancholy before he saw an advertisement for the local theatre club, and one more until he skipped his night classes to pay them a visit. but it would be the rest of his life that this choice changed.
the club, too, would be speaking of it for a while to come. about the boy who showed up one day in his school uniform, a cute, curious kid that they cheerily took under their wings. about how they never thought he would become such a star, but how it seems obvious looking back, because they'd never seen a person who was so much more at ease being somebody else.

with the card in his hand, the phone number right there waiting to be dialed, he acted on a moment of impulse. it wasn't long until he was sitting in an intimidating office, accompanied, miraculously, by his mother. he signed the contract on the same day, marking the start of a decade-long partnership.
the only issue he really faced... or, rather, that the company faced regarding him around this time was his stage name. they couldn't decide on one. they went back and forth between options, talking about fortune, trends, attractiveness, and more. he didn't particularly care. to him, it was all the same. whatever the name they chose, it would be the name of someone whose job it was to leave it behind. but when they finally came to a decision, he found he rather enjoyed it, that the sound of it felt far more comfortable to him than the one he was born with.
and so, exactly one year and three months later, in the cast list of a critic-beloved indie movie, jang hakju makes himself known to the world for the first time.

mr song, however, knew. he could tell. the man must've known all along; hakju resembled his mother. he greeted the man silently as he passed by. they exchange a few words later, about his mother, but it was a shallow conversation that hakju hardly remembers. he waited the entire day for himself to feel something about meeting his real father, and it never happened.

a man who learnt to forgive his cheating wife but never her innocent son. strict and skeptical, nothing hakju does ever really comes across positively to dr. jang. his father only talks to hakju to criticize something or to force him into showing up at family events, and at this point hakju only goes along with what the man says just to avoid exhausting conflict. while they keep up something like a relationship for manners' sake, it's clear that if there had ever been any love between them, it has been long worn down by harsh words.
jang jiwoo (deceased)
guilt may not be a great thing to feel towards your child, but it is at least better than resentment. while she can't be described as a good mother to hakju, she took pity on him occasionally and went against her husband to get him the few things he asked for. though they rarely talked ever since he started living on his own, hakju had the most things to say to her. it's hard for him to say he loved her, but her death upset him greatly. it served as cold water in his face to wake him up and pull him back from the breaking point he'd been tethering on.
Jang Wooseung
as a result of their upbringing, wooseung, who was 3 years older and received far more praise from his family, naturally grew to be at odds with his younger brother. one of hakju's worst bullies when he was younger, jealousy and pent-up frustrations have always and still run rampant between them. the brothers now have a hostile relationship, in which wooseung still remains the purposeful aggressor, only kept from going out of hand by their sister.
Jang Sojin
the only one who really bothered to keep in contact with him after he moved out, hakju's older sister is, as middle children tend to be, the hidden peacekeeper in the family. whenever tensions arise in family gatherings, she's the first to break it apart and tries her best to reset the mood, if for nothing but to pass the day peacefully. though they aren't close, she's a figure hakju is grateful he at least had to soften the blow of the rest of his family's venom.
Mr. Song
though the famous ceo is hakju's biological father, he knows little about and feels little towards the man. though he expected himself to feel some sort of resentment, the few times they met have proved different. perhaps, it's because he'd managed to get success and wealth on his own by that point that he doesn't feel like he missed out on much. regardless, mr. song is an acquaintance at best in hakju's eyes, and he suspects it's the same vice versa.
The Dove
hakju has only met his half-sister once at his mother's funeral, where they only exchanged greetings. as far as he knows, she isn't aware that they're at all related, and he isn't intent on telling her. he was pretty surprised, in fact, to hear she would be part of this cast; not that she got a role, considering her father, just that an heiress would want to join on as a minor supporting character.

[the swan] is a colleague from the same agency, who has worked with him on multiple sets. netizens wonder if their company has put the two of them on a buddy system, which hakju finds rather amusing. though at first she was just a new artist he was asked to help out in her first big role, he's grown to admire her persistence and optimism after getting to know her.

hakju and [the nightingale] were students of the same performing arts high school at around the same time, though they were in different departments. he's mostly heard of her through school events and mutual friends; while he's never talked to her, he generally has a good impression of the singer.

Yena is a very shy woman, which often clashes with her outwardly excited and bubbly personality, this often leads her to either over or under react when she feels nervous. She almost always nervous. However she has been working on opening up more with others, and is one of the reasons she applied to be in a movie despite her poor acting and general people skills. Under pressure from her fathers influence everyone around her simply praised her despite her lack of skill, which she is completely oblivious to. She doesn't believe in or of have much confidence in herself to begin with and is rather dismissive of such praise and compliments but the constancy has started to convince her that she might actually be as good as everyone keeps telling her. Blind to the sarcastic and forced nature of the people she trusts the most. This also gets mixed up with genuine aknowledgment, meaning she's almost never faced with any criticism from those around her.
As such Yena's mind is constantly going back in forth between dismissive suspicion and blind faith. Either everyone is telling the truth or everyone is lying to her. There's no middle ground, that would be too confusing.
I wish I could fly... Because sometimes I want to jump
Yena's inner turmoil is something she generally keeps to herself without fail, often leading to her therapist having to trick the girl into opening up and has been pushing for medication against Yena's father's wishes. There has been progress but it's been worryingly slow as stated by her therapist. Yena is only two birds and one stone throw away from completely collapsing in on herself, but there's still hope for major improvement.
One of Yena's outlets that's not fishing for compliments on social media after a needlessly expensive shopping trip is one of her favorite hobbies; pole dancing. A private gym near her home is a frequent spot for many wealthy and famous patrons to go for all kinds of exercise or training. Yena had been going for a few years now, after her father was sleeping with an old instructor before having her fired for some reason or another. The replacement instructor had noticed something was off, and approached Yena when she visited with her father once; inviting her to take private classes which she accepted not knowing how to say no, nor even knowing what she was signing up for. Though in truth the instructor simply has suspicions and didn't know it was her father. Cautious of a bad actor, the instructor just wanted to make sure Yena was safe.
After the situation was cleared up, the instructor could easily see how much Yena was struggling and introduced the young woman to pole dancing. Something she found herself rather talented in. Keeping her body strong and healthy while being a incredible form of personal empowerment. The feeling of flying with her own wings for the first time. Even just as a hobby it has been one of her few sources of inner strength to keep going. She still goes rather frequently and her instructor has since become one of her closest and most trusted friends.

Yena's life has been one of luxury and loneliness. Many of her early memories were simply of sitting alone in a vast yet empty high rise apartment, playing with her dolls while waiting for her father to come home. It had been two days already, he usually got back before the third, and right on cue the door began to open and she quickly got up to hide. It wasn't because she was in danger or was fearful. Simply he had brought home another woman. Yena never knew her real mother was, but she did know a bunch of random ladies who kept coming by. Though she spent most of her time hidden away in her room staying quiet just as he had taught her, though it wasn't like she wasn't taken care of, often left with a babysitter. Usually one of her father's frequent hookups, but most took to the quiet adorable little girl who was always going on rambling off the stories she wrote to herself in crayon. Still, no one ever stayed in her life, other than her father who seemed to try or at least had used to before seemingly giving up. It was either work or an affair, and Yena would have to take care of him herself the times he was actually home as she grew up. While they could afford chefs and maids, her father had a very obvious hiring practice and had a habit of firing people he slept with even if they didn't work for him. So Yena took it upon herself to cook and clean, help with his hangovers, make sure he went to his meetings on time, etc.
To give some credit he felt like he owed his daughter something, especially after all she had done for him. His absence meant he couldn't give her quality time so the man instead did what he did best and manipulated strings from afar. Everything she wanted she got, anything she tried out for she got accepted. Yena was spoiled rotten, and it wasn't until she attempted to act on her own that she found herself to be lacking in many critical ways, but having been gaslit for most of her life she could still never tell what was real and what was simply her fathers involvement.
At some point she had started acting lessons, wanting to attempt to be an actress. Yena was taken aback when her acting coach broke into tears one day during a session after asking if she was ready to audition for an upcoming film, however she never saw the woman again. Her replacement instructor was more than happy to help her with the process and next thing she knew Yena was lying awake in her bed the night before the first day of shooting, trapped between overwhelming giddy excitement and a deep well of unease threatening to swallow her whole. This was it. Either she got to the otherside soaring freely through the sky, or she'd find herself trapped back in her cage with clipped wings.

- first stage of lifejunjie lived a rather public life since birth because of his celebrity parents who were known world-wide for their multi-talented ness and ability to adapt to their surroundings with little to no problem — at least that’s what they wanted their fans to know rather than the truth behind their success. junjie has been filmed since he was just a toddler with many adoring fans ( but who doesn’t love a cute baby on television ). he was the child his parents adored yet didn’t. the child that received attention from hundreds but none from his parents, whereas his brothers were thrown away like trash. he was their star-child. a child born from the heavens. he was going to become a star no matter what.
junjie was born in xi’an, china to two mixed-parents ( his father was half chinese / half korean whereas his mother was tawianese ). his parents had bumped into each other on the airplane after realizing they were sitting next to each other ( chen was returning home to visit his parents after another successful movie whereas xia was looking for a new muse / a new start in life ). the two hit it off as they talked into the night, laughing at his horrible jokes to her heart fluttering at his handsomeness. it was love at first sight. as they exchanged phone numbers, a sea of reporters and news articles with the headlines “are they together” soared.
in a matter of a few years, the two found themselves married, living in south korea with their first child ( guiying ) and they couldn’t have been happier. until their second child after a romantic evening in shanghai who they believed would do wonders the second he was born. when the two had their third child only a year later ( by accident ) xia wasn’t the mother she used to be. with thousands of eyes on her and the pressure to be a good mother to sing until her throat grew sore, she was done with pleasing others ( at least behind closed doors ). the once tender woman was nothing more than a nightmare to her three children and her husband wasn’t much worse ( maybe even worse ). the boys lived in fear for most of their childhood, bouncing back and forth to xi’an and seoul until they naturally picked up mandarin and korean from their parents / exposure to others.
throughout his career from child actor to where he is now with millions of adoring fans that have accumulated since his childhood with his authentic acting and ability to capture the hearts of many with his handsome face and indifferent personality. many had crushes, while others wanted to be him. he was handed everything on a golden spoon ( whereas they ignored his brothers ) but he grew up without a spoiled personality ( despite the public’s shock and what happened behind closed doors ). sadly, everything changed when he developed a simple crush. a crush untouched by humanity’s grasp.
junjie came home, grinning from ear-to-ear in utter bliss. he kissed his crush! a sweet but simple kiss under the moonlight. a kiss that sent him over the moon. he had his first kiss at only seven! seven-years-old! he wondered how jealous everyone would be when he told everyone in an excited, child-like voice with animated hands waving in the air at fifty miles an hour.
thinking back on this one moment, junjie wondered why did he tell his parents? he couldn’t give you a solid answer. he wasn’t sure what his little mind was thinking after the constant pressure his parents put him under to the point he was constantly sick from overworking and stress.
what if he never told them? would things be better? would he still be greeted with warm expressions and gentle hugs instead of the cold glances and looks of disgust when he came home? the dirty remarks his father threw at him whenever he came home from school to being treated like trash when the camera wasn’t pointed at them.
he did an unforgivable sin. a sin that would change his relationship with his family until he died. a sin that he would take until his grave.
despite being born in xi’an, china junjie grew up in ulsan, south korea while living in busan from time to time ( his parents had three homes but he never really knew where their third home was ).
junjie had developed a child-like crush on a boy not much older than him. the two were close-friends ( later becoming best friends ) as they did everything together. the two were curious. what was it like to kiss someone on the lips? did it matter what gender they were? the two eventually kissed under the moonlight. a simple kiss shared between two innocent children unaware of society’s views as they gently pecked each other’s lips with pounding hearts. a simple kiss that brought giggles to their plump lips with a child-like glow glistening from their wide hues. a kiss that brought bright smiles to their faces as they hugged each other, listening to the crazed pounding of their hearts at their little secret shared under the moonlight.
despite their happiness, junjie’s world will turn into one of bittersweet memories and a horrible fear of thunderstorms. the minute he had told his parents with a flutter of his wings that he kissed! his parents couldn’t have been happier only to find out it was a boy. a boy?! the both of them thought with horror-stricken faces. how could their precious son become a cutsleeve? looks of utter disgust became apart on their faces as the smile slipped off his lips as a fearful expression took hold. did he do something wrong? why did they look so angry?
his father roared in anger, throwing the tv remote across the room while his mother dropped the freshly made kimchi in horror. the fermented cabbage flying everywhere, creating a haunting picture that seared into his brain.
the sound of a harsh slap rattled the walls of their large home, shocking junjie as tears welled up within his hues at the pain of the bright red handprint forming against his small cheek.
his mother, ignoring their interactions, cleared up the mess she made with indifference. blatantly ignoring her husband beating their second child until he was curled up on the floor — sobbing his heart out. a great sense of pity rose within her chest as she cleaned the dishes while glancing at her husband and son. why? why was it her son? why did it have to be her son!?
“get the hell out of my house you ... you damn cutsleeve!” his father shouted until he was red in the face. finger pointing to the door, uncaring that his son was huddled on the floor covered in blood as thunder rattled the walls. he didn’t care if his son died out there. he wanted nothing to do with this… this thing. this wasn’t his son. his son was straight.
the rumbling sounds of thunder rattled deep within junjie’s small bones as he stumbled to the front door. tears gathering up within his hues as he glanced back at them, hoping they were kidding. but in the end he knew his parents weren’t kidding, and that this was reality. “if you ever tell anyone about what… what you did — i’ll make sure your life will become a living hell.” chen snarled in a fit of anger with hues blown far out of proportion, giving him a crazed look that brought terror to the seven-year-old boy. junjie laid, huddled against the front door as he nodded meekly before finding himself standing in a massive thunderstorm.
the small boy wanted to ask them: why are you so angry? what was a cutsleeve? why was he being kicked out? what was happening to them?
unaware of the prejudice. unaware of the hate and disgust it caused others as he sat there, huddled into his body to preserve the little warmth he had while his brothers stood there with sorrowful expressions — faces pressed up against their bedroom window at the sight of their pitiful brother. although neither one of them would admit it, but it felt good to see their brother like this.
the sound of thunder rattling his bones as he shivered underneath the little cover he found. the rain pelting against his bruised skin until he felt feverish as an icy chill went up his spine.
the sound of footsteps broke him out of his feverish haze only to see his best friend with a swollen eye and busted lip, arms wrapped tightly around his body hoping to keep what little warmth he had. junjie thought he was dreaming, but when those familiar arms wrapped themselves around his bruised frame, he knew this was real. a broken sob escaped his lips as his emotions came crashing down and the two cried together under the pelting rain.
his friend mumbled, voice quivering as he pulled junjie back to stare at him in the eyes. “p-promise me we’ll always be … be together.” junjie without hesitation, nodded weakly while they curled up, sleeping in each other’s familiar embrace until the next morning.
when junjie awoke, he found his friend gone, leaving him all alone once more than he knocked on the front door. xia opened the door, ushering her son into the warm house to change his clothes and send him back out saying nothing.
until that moment, junjie promised to never become a disappointment to his family. to always strive for the best until he became a puppet for them to manipulate later on into his teen years. junjie was a shell of what he once was, a part of himself vanished that night and he doubted that would ever return. he would never show weakness to his parents or anyone ever again. he was a broken boy hiding behind a smile, waving to the camera as if nothing had happened. a boy with no emotions. a boy many wanted to be, but he hated what he’d become.
upon returning to class that day, junjie later discovered that his friend hadn’t shown up and would be absent for the next week. greeting everyone with bruises covering his body acting as if nothing happened the previous night. with a heavy heart, junjie joked with a smile upon his lips, claiming he ran into a pole.
“junnie is so clumsy!” everyone laughed, joking around while he nodded, grinning as he played with his schoolmates.
second stage of lifejunjie began his high school years off with a kick after gaining a role in his first major historical drama as the main lead ( he looks rather good in long hair as mentioned by many of the girls at his school ). his popularity soared after his targeted audience shifted to teens and young adults.
life was perfect ( as much as one’s life is when their parents hate their own child ) but junjie was finally seeing his life turn around for the better. he was finally staring in a drama as the male lead! a historical drama at that! he was beyond ecstatic and what was even better was that he was going to school with his childhood best friend! the same boy that shared a moonlight kiss with.
despite his all but perfect life, junjie lost his older brother in his first year of high school. guiying wanted nothing to do with his parents ( and brothers ) that he got up and left with a note saying that he was legally changing his name and cutting ties with them. junjie was beyond heartbroken to see his older brother leave with a brief explanation to travel around south korea with his indie band until a label picked him up, becoming a semi well-known soloist. despite the two having a semi-close bond, Junjie couldn’t help but be jealous at guiying’s ability to cut all ties, becoming free like a bird.
while his career finally took off, which left him little to no time for classwork, but he was a diligent worker. refusing to give up, he plowed ahead despite his somewhat poor attendance during filming and stations asking him to appear on their show.
as his career took off, so did his popularity in school, from love letters to girls giving him small gifts and yet he refused to date for the sake of keeping his stardom scandal free. as junjie tried his best to please both his parents and managers / staff, his best friend had come out to the school as gay. becoming the most hated person in school, they forced his best friend to suffer countless beatings and demonic slurs that left him sobbing for hours in the bathroom with nothing but the company of empty promises.
junjie didn’t know what to do the second he came home to see his parents packing his things while tossing everything that reminded him of his best friend in the trash. his father was livid. beyond the point of convincing as he burned every memory he ever had with his best friend.
he was being shipped off to america to finish out his high school. far away from south korea and everything he came to see as his home.
with confusion swirling within his dark hues as he questioned what they were doing with a quivering voice that tampered off into nothing. A silent plea, begging them to let him stay. to be there for his best friend, but sadly, that never happened.
his father stood there with arms crossed, hues blazing with anger as he seethed, “didn't i tell you … to stop associating yourself with these … freaks?” he asked his middle son — the star-child with murderous intent.
“you worthless cutsleeve. i want you to tell this … this friend of yours that you’ll no longer associate yourself with him. are we clear?”
junjie wanted to fight back. to tell off his father off, but he couldn’t say a single word. too terrified of what his father could do if he lashed out against them. with a sinking heart and flared nostrils, junjie nodded silently all while nabbing a few close items like the sweatshirt his best friend lent him to the photos they took at a carnival.
the following day, he stood in front of the very person who brought him happiness with tears of anguish streaming down his face. with a heavy heart, he told him they couldn’t be associated with each other, but junjie didn’t know that would be the last conversation he would ever have with his best friend.
the next day, he sat on an airplane heading to new york to attend highschool there. just before he powered down his phone to airplane mode, a text message came through claiming that his best friend was dead. the very person who brought him joy now was nothing more than great sadness and regret. he was the reason. he killed his best friend. his cowardice murdered his best friend. his first love. junjie cried in utter agony the entire flight until he passed out with a throbbing headache and puffy eyes.
with a heavy heart, he finished his first year in an entirely unfamiliar country all while learning the language. finishing his freshmen year with flying colors despite transferring in the middle of the year with little to no passion. guilt weighing heavily on his shoulders, he auditioned for an american-based drama in his second year of high school as a main cast member in the final season of glee ( 2015 ) as well as a supporting cast member in teen wolf ( season five ) which began his popularity in america all while finishing his sophomore year of school / training in stunts ( giving him an upper leg in competition ). starting his third year as a junior where he could become a member of the well-known american drama “the vampire diaries” on their last season ( 2016 ) as a supporting cast member, but nothing would ever feel the same. not after losing his best friend and first love. as his career rose more than ever with a false smile on his face as he did one dangerous stunt after the next to feel something other than numbness.
surrounded by fake friends and popularity when in reality he just wanted to stay invisible during high school but that didn't seem to be the case as his parents forced him to audition after audition.
falling into a pit of darkness unsure of whether he could climb out ( or if he wanted to climb out of this pit of darkness, he found himself in ). with shrunken cheeks and a sense of numbness, but he deserved this. this pain. he deserved to suffer after all he caused to his parents — his brothers that were tossed aside like utter trash — to his best friend.
as he was about to start his final year in new york his parents sent him to great britain where he finished his senior year in yet another unknown country ( at least he could understand english ). starting his senior year before auditioning for wolfblood in their last season as a new character that stole the hearts of thousands. finishing his senior year with a hitch. he wasn’t sure what to do, whether that was returning to south korea or returning to new york where he spent his more vulnerable years in.
while he was contemplating on what to do — his younger brother ( yahui ) landed a humongous opportunity. his little brother was finally becoming a kpop idol! after all his hard work and perseverance, he was finally doing what he loved to do and that was to perform with adoring fans. after years of being a trainee, he was finally getting the chance to debut with a group called aeonian.
junjie applied to the american academy of dramatic arts in new york as well as applying to korea national university of arts but before he could attend college, they pulled him back to south korea.
having been rising to stardom, junjie landed many roles after high school from historical dramas to modern ( mostly historical ) and junjie was thriving. despite the many up and downs throughout his younger years, it was what strengthened him.
third stage of lifehe was finally living alone! something he dreamed of doing without the help of his parents. with no one’s help. other than his not-so-nice landlord that may or may not be selling drugs.
during his time living alone, junjie ended up having a "friends with benefits" of sorts with the flamingo which lasted a while before he dropped all contact with her after starting in a drama in china, wanting to keep his head clear from trying to figure out what his sexuality really was. in the end, junjie finally accepted that he was gay and nothing would change that except for the usually tittering between what the hell was he doing and accepting it.
while starting in a historical drama as the male lead back in china he bumped into a trainee who was currently on a small “retreat” of sorts to gather more practice for the upcoming auditions for a new kpop idol group.
the two hit it off. both becoming lost in each other’s gazes, creating a tornado of emotion that exploded to the surface.
the two eventually started dating as junjie’s drama came to a close allowing him a small break before his next upcoming drama in south korea. the two spent every moment together all while keeping their relationship a secret in fear of destroying their rising career and a career that has yet to start.
sharing kisses under the blanket of the night, wrapped up in each other’s embrace as they danced under the blankets of his small apartment. memories that they would cherish forever, becoming one of the happiest moments in junjie’s depressing life. he was free to be himself around ahn yeong. the very boy that brought on his reckless, dangerous side from skateboarding to dancing in the rain with no one watching.
despite everything, ahn yeong could pursue his dream of becoming a kpop idol as the main dancer. everything was finally falling into place but their secret relationship ended. neither one of them wanted to break up, but they had no other choice if they wanted to pursue their careers. in agreement, they broke up with teary goodbyes and hundreds of hugs, with a promise to never forget what they had.
his minor break was ending as he prepared for his latest teenage drama with the break up still fresh inside his heart. this made him out to be far more imitating with his domineering and cold persona rising to the surface. having far brief communication with his fellow actors and actresses.

he would often give his son the cold shoulder whenever they appeared in the same room, but shortly he couldn’t bear to be near to him, so naturally, chen left the house whenever junjie came to visit.
they left junjie heartbroken. truly regretting that he told his parents about that kiss. wondering if he never told them, would they have been like they were before? he wasn’t sure but when his father gave him the cold shoulder or throws endless slurs at the boy; it leaves him wanting to curl up in a ball and die. why couldn’t his father accept him?
was... was he that much of a monster to them?
did his father truly want nothing to do with him?
with those simple thoughts, it shattered junjie until there was nothing but a billion pieces. he no longer had his father. he was alone.
yang chen refused to let his son ruin his image. an image he worked so hard to gain and the world knowing his son is a cutsleeve? that would truly ruin his career. upon realizing this, chen threatened junjie that if he dared to come out to the public or anyone he would certainly make him vanish. he would do anything to keep his career even if it meant destroying the very flesh and blood he created.
yang chen became a well-known actor, martial artist, film director, producer, action choreographer. he was and still famous in hong kong because of his films like iceman, ip man, wu xia, the monkey king, etc. as he grew his career in china, he eventually became a relatively known actor in america from john wick ( chapter four ), mulan, and rogue one.
his parents were poor, having been raised in lanzhou, china until they eventually moved to south korea for better work, but yang chen dreamed of returning to his home country. while he started his acting career in south korea but without warning he moved to hong kong, china where he took leaps and bounds.
he won the hong kong film award for best action choreography and has been a nominee for the golden globe awards but has yet to win, which is his goal and he’ll stop at nothing until he gets it.

liu xialiu xia has a “decent” relationship with her eldest son, guiying while having a rather… horrible relationship with her youngest; yahui. she certainly doesn’t deserve the mother of the year reward after standing there as her second husband beats her own child without so much as batting an eye.
junjie and her relationship are about as far apart as the earth is from saturn. never a favourable moment other than junjie trying his best not to cry, fearing his mother would lash out at him. she used to adore her second-son as if he were the sun itself but that all changed when he came home after kissing a boy.
with that one moment; everything changed from a kind mother to a mother who ignores him.
her image was at stake! what if this got out to the public? their image would be ruined. she couldn’t afford that. so in order to minimize her contact with junjie, she refused to be in the same room as him unless they were forced to do something relating to the camera.
she would often sit outside, sipping her tea as she questioned the gods. wondering if she did something in her previous lives to receive such a sinful child, but no one responded. would she ever forgive junjie? heavens no. he destroyed that chance of ever having a decent relationship with her the second he came home after that sinful encounter.
even when junjie came home crying after being assaulted, she still refused to comfort him. telling him it was what he deserved. that it would do him good. to straighten him out. sadly, this only further drove the knife until there was nothing but a broken bond left unable to be repaired.
despite her rather… chaotic family situation, she was more than popular all over with her angelic voice and beautiful appearance. she was an angel sent down from heaven, most would say. a beloved singer that came from a common family rising to fame and despite her first husband being abusive, she came back stronger than ever.
all while her singing career was taking off, the taiwanese mother was considered an icon in both taiwanese and hong kong films. she was a lady of multiple talents. she was both a singer and actress with a variety of roles in several films. in the end she gave up her role as an actress and became a full-time singer. she was an icon too many young girls and still continues to be an icon — someone that people look up to for inspiration.
liu xia was born in new taipei city, taiwan until she moved to beijing, china during her early years as a young adult ( ended up buying two homes where she bounced from one country to the other for work ). until she met her first husband ( an american tourist ) and moved to the united states to be with him until their divorce.

yang guiyingyang guiying didn’t have a close relationship with his younger brothers but they had a better relationship than they did with their parents. junjie and yahui grew up relying on their other brother for the compassion that they never received, but this made him despise his brothers without realizing it. why did he have to take care of them? why was he thrown away like trash? weren’t his parents proud of him? what did he do wrong? but guiying was too terrified to ask them so in the end they became nothing more than empty questions.
by some miracle, guiying could gather enough cash to leave and travel around south korea with his indie band. he was finally leaving the nest. after years of hiding his emotions and acting as if everything was fine. he was finally free to do / be whatever.
while traveling, it gave them a chance to become a korean band officially after being sought by a semi-popular label.
junjie and yahui were heartbroken after finding out their older brother left with nothing but a minor note saying goodbye. both felt guilty for driving their brother away, but in the end, they could do nothing but wait for news to see if he was alright.
throughout the years, guiying became a soloist. climbing up the ranks, all while secretly cheering on his younger brothers from the shadows. after all, he was no longer a part of their family.
as a soloist, he debuted under the stage name : hua but not before he legalized his name to “min sooah.”
