There’s a song for every situation. Or a playlist. At least, that’s how she considered it. In her favourite place, the library, Arielle had kept on loop her exclusive song list she had prepared. The music echoed in her eardrums as she placed the airpods and stood up from her seat, trying to be as quite as possible. For the last couple of hours, she had been jotting down all sorts of annotations on her textbooks, analyzing every single bit of text until she had squeezed every drop of information she possibly could. From the outside, the young female could probably stand out as being calm and collected, since she was surrounded by stressed students who lightly whispered to each other and tried to cram as much information as humanly possible due to their exams coming right up.

Quite contrary to the outside, the information kept thundering in her brain as she read date after date, event after event, and related to her previous knowledge, to the point where she thought she was starting to hallucinate and see the Battle of Yorktown occurring in miniature right in front of her emerald eyes. Pinching her nose bridge lightly as the headache hit like a truck when she stood up, it was clear that she needed to take a break, and she knew that it was no time to be overworking herself. Not today at least...Tomorrow, who knows?

Two pairs of eyes turned to face her as she stood up, surprised by the abrupt movement who disconnected their study trance. Arielle mouthed lightly,
“break”
so that they would not worry. Those eyes, after all, belonged to her closest friends, May and Belkis, who were dealing with their own battles in the political field rather than the historical one like Arielle. Since her high school episode, those two had kept a close eye on her, ensuring, like worried mothers or babysitters, that Arielle kept a healthy level balance of studies and social life. The brunette was thankful of course, but sometimes she did want time for herself, to think about her own things, even if her way of relaxing was still investigating in the area of her career.

Her light steps were barely audible as they slowly made their way up the wooden snail stairs, where the history section occupied an entire corridor of shelves. The music seemed to perfectly match the mood, as a small smile curled on her lips when she finally felt like she was in her habitat.
Her feet, as if they had their own mind, made their way down the corridor, getting lost between the shelves that were horizontally placed in the middle of the corridor, heading for the walls, where the thicker history books were stacked, as well as the ones people tended to go for the least.
Her eyes scanned each year, wondering which one to skim-read about that evening, and her eyes immediately locked with the french revolution, which to her disgust, was on the highest shelf.

Arielle’s head looked from side to side, making sure no one was close enough to see her, since it felt embarrassing to get caught on her tiptoes, reaching for the book in a rather desperate way. With a small sigh, she looked at her feet before getting on her tiptoes and reaching for her objective, “Marie Antoinette” that, in the bookworm’s eyes, glistened like a tasty parfait in front of her. Her fine fingers were just about to reach of the very end of the book-

“just... a bit... more..”
She mumbled under her breath as one of her feet lifted from the floor, trying to get that last inch out of the way.

Just as she finally grazed the book’s mould, a much larger (and warmer by feel the sudden touch) hand grasped it with no hesitation.

huh?

Her heels lightly resonated as she got back to her original height, and quickly turned around to know who had dared to barge into her plans, and most importantly, snatch her book in such a bold manner. Her eyebrows clearly reflected her surprise as when she turned, she was looking up at a handsome blue-haired boy who she had never seen before. Her eyes blinked twice as she quickly scanned his face, before glancing at the precious book in his hand. The female reached for one of her airpods, plucking it away to focus on the stranger.

“Thanks- I was just about to get it”
With one of her hands she tugged from the other end of the book, but saw that the other had no intention on relaxing the grip. So once again, her flaring green eyes searched for his, quite pretty she had to admit, blue eyes.

A polite yet clearly forced smile appeared on her face as she tried to keep her cool,
“um... need this book for anything? I have an assignment to finish”

lie. a big, fat, lie.

Arielle prayed to whatever entity existed in the great beyond to hide her features with a cold façade since her lying capabilities were between 0 and minus 1.

Trying to understand why he should give up this book.

Sometimes the library offered more comfort than his own room, this was one of the rare days when Yuu would head to his University to look at some books. The past couple of weeks he spent reading about historical figures, and he tried to decipher their way of thinking, wrote some essays even. Outside it was rainy, which meant he wasn't going to skate anytime soon, and to make up for this empty time the guy wanted to read some more. He already read a lot of the books in the library, but that was the good part of his university, they always got new books after a while.

With a quick tread, he made his way towards the big doors where the treasured books were waiting for his arrival. His hair was slightly wet from the weather, and he put it behind his ears, some blue strands finding their way back into his face again, luckily he was not bothered by it. Yuu greeted the librarian with a slight smile, then made his way to the history section. There seemed to be another person there who also tried to get a book from the historical branch but the student didn't pay any notice to her. Only when his hand went up to grab the book that got his attention, did he look down at her. His hand brushed against hers when it went to find the book that he longed for. The girl turned around and made eye contact with him, kinda pleased, even thanking him for getting the book. Yuu's eyebrows went up a little, and he didn't let go of the literature when she tried to grab it from him. What was she doing? Was he to give it to her? But he got it first, right? The other person face also looked puzzled, and she tried to explain why she needed it. Not reason enough for him to let go of the pretty cover.
"Okay,"
his voice sounded confused. The student's eyes lingered on her for a bit, then he whirled around and strolled to the nearest table where he could read. He looked back at the girl with a neutral expression, his mouth curled into a smile as he spoke;
"Good luck with that assignment."

It took a hot second for Arielle to get back to reality since she had been so put off by the response, but as soon as her grip slowly slid away holding nothing but air, she knew she now wanted the book more than ever. Was it her need to prove the male wrong? Was it her constant competitiveness? Apart from the true interest she had in the book, that smile the stranger placed on his face was enough for her to keep the lie going, even if she was risking getting caught by her made-up-on-the-spot excuses.

“No no you don't understand...”
It didn't take long for the female to sit next to the male, probably invading his personal space a tiny bit,
“I need the book- for uh-”
She bit her bottom lip for a second before blurting the first thing that her mind decided to fixate on, "
"my history assignment! And it's due, like, in two days or something, so yeah I really need it ”

Her eyes scanned the blue-haired boy, looking for his reaction, impatiently waiting for the book to be given to her. After all, she was sure she hadn't seen him before, so making up excuses about her course was more than convenient, as she was sure the other wouldn't really have arguments to go against her. She lightly fiddled with her thumbs as she awaited a response like a puppy waiting for the treat after being told to sit. Yet her impatience got the best of her and she lightly reached out in slow motion for the book once more as a second attempt.
Arielle couldn't help but be slightly surprised as to why this young male had decided to go for such book out of the average interest in books of guys his age, which shouldn't be far off from hers. Realizing of her probably rude attitude since she always was assertive when she considered something a competition (in this case the precious book), she decided to soothen her faciel features into a smile
"If you're interested in the genre, I can give you other recommendations"
