Pride, courage, zeal - these make up Battojutsu's core. He hides beneath a veneer of quiet reserve for most of the time, however, in favor of the lies he tells to keep himself safe and hidden. He is at times whimsical, and at other times given to bouts of thought and contemplation on his craft and life purpose. When not on a mission, he devotes his time to meditation, art, and practice for tasks that lay ahead. He is a samurai warrior, his honor found in his duty above all.
Battojutsu, named for the renowned style of swordsmanship that his parents wished for him to train in, was born to a great samurai clan in the far-off empire of Yamatai. It was a time of strife and tumult - the time of the great war of unification that raged all across the continent, leaving no soul unaffected. The war was short but brutal, and the peace it had won was not to last.
Battojutsu was just coming of age when the recently unified empire was beset upon by war once again. Only this time, it was a war of extermination. Through multiple tears in the Veil, a great host of demons poured through and immediately set to destroying everything in its path. The experienced warriors of Yamatai were no strangers to demonic invasions, but the scale of this invasion was like nothing they faced before. There was no stopping the bloodthirsty hordes, even had there been a warning. Hundreds and thousands fell even before a proper defense could be organized. The enemy seemed to be coming from everywhere at once. The capital city itself came under siege.
But just as everything seemed about to be lost, in that darkest hour when hope was fading, the desperate prayers of the Yamato were finally answered. The earth trembled and the skies roared with thunder, and in a flash of golden light so blinding that it looked like the sun itself was crashing down, the Hellguard arrived. Without a moment's hesitation, the angels descended upon the legions of Hell with all the terrible fury of Heaven. Awed but encouraged, the warriors of Yamatai retaliated, and before long their enemies were decimated; scattering only to be hunted down and slaughtered one by one. Yamatai had been saved from certain ruin.
It was at that time that the Onislayers, or Demonslayers, were founded; with aid and blessing of the Hellguard, that Yamatai would never again be found unprepared to face demonkind. Battojutsu, barely sixteen at the time, was among the first initiates to be trained. He trained long and hard, honing his skills to perfection, hunting the oni - demons - throughout the islands of the empire. For twenty years he did this, until he rose as high as a samurai could ever rise; his blade as famous as his own name for the deeds he accomplished with it.
One day, Battojutsu was summoned before the emperor. Disturbing news had reached Yamatai from the land of Asgard - talk of not just large demonic invasions, but actual pacts between Men and demons; of a new, dark power rising in the East. Battojutsu's task was simple. He was to travel across the Great Sea to Asgard, investigate these troubling rumors, and deliver his findings to the emperor.
Soon after landing in Asgard, however, the demonslayer learned that things were much, much worse than feared.
