Witches
Unlike humans, witches have the unique ability to use magic to achieve many fantastical feats: summoning and communing with the spirit of the dead, memory manipulation, healing, mind control, spatial manipulation, and much more. The potency of their magic depends on a myriad of factors, such as their age, bloodline, and the difficulty of the spell in question.
Although male and female witches alike are capable of witchcraft, some discrepancies exist between the two sexes. Males' powers tend to mature when they reach 16 years of age, but the same occurs several years earlier in the case of females.
At their peak, male and female witches of comparable bloodline are equal in strength. However, the latter's powers do not wane, and they will maintain their youthful appearances for as long as they live. This is only given if they do not have children. Should they give birth, their powers and beauty will begin to fade as their child matures. Male witches, on the other hand, age just as humans do (though many may utilize witchcraft in an attempt to stave off the process), and their powers begin to wane in their mid- to late 40s.
It should be noted that there is no such thing as “half-witches” or the like. Witches commonly produce offspring with humans, and their children are also considered witches. So long as they have a single drop of witch blood in their veins, they are capable of using magic.
Grand Witch
The most powerful of all, the Grand Witch is the de facto leader of the witches in Wesland. Throughout history, her title and power has always been passed down within the Corvus clan. To ensure the loyalty and obedience of the witches under their jurisdiction, it has become tradition for the children of the Corvus to be raised by the pope’s family.
Noble Clans
Witches aligned with the Holy See are typically descended from one of the seven noble clans, and they are all able to communicate with the animals of their clan namesake. Each of the clans excels in a specific type of witchcraft, with their respective heads being particularly powerful.
Familiars
Notably, most witches do not seem capable of using spells that are directly offensive in nature. They may brew lethal poisons or cast slow-working curses, but do not expect fireballs or lightning bolts to be flung around. They make up for their limited combat capabilities with their familiars– demonic beings that dwell in their stomachs or wombs. Most witches are only capable of housing one familiar in their body, who refers to their host as “mother" or “father”. A handful of more powerful witches, such as the heads of the noble clans, may be able to host an extra, but familiars tend to reject the idea of sharing their nest with their “siblings.” The sole exception is the Grand Witch, whose immeasurable power allows her to comfortably host countless in her womb.
When summoned, a familiar will bring their host and opponents into their “room,” a pocket dimension where it holds the ultimate authority. Contrary to the name, a "room" is not necessarily an indoors space. Depending on the familiar, it could be outdoors, or it may completely defy the rules of physics. Should two familiars be summoned to battle, they will fight for dominance in an attempt to drag the other into its domain.
The strength of the familiar is entirely separate from that of the witch. As such, it is possible for witches less powerful to struggle to rein in their familiars. Regardless, it is rare to find a familiar who would betray and leave their parent’s side. For one, familiars who lack a host will gradually lose their powers and sanity, as they sustain themselves with "meals" from their parents. These meals are not tangible, but are derived from something related to the witch’s personality, emotions, mentality, etc. Some examples include: the witch’s feelings of affection towards the people around them, happy memories, conscience, memories of people’s faces, etc. Additionally, while familiars can be weakened, they cannot be killed. In the event that they sustain a "fatal" injury, they will retreat into their host and recover through rest and meals.
While all familiars are expected to have a host, not all witches have familiars. Familiars are typically passed down, and it is not uncommon for only the most talented witches in a clan to receive a familiar.
Supervising Priests
Unlike most members of the clergy, supervising priests undergo rigorous training in hand-to-hand combat and the use of firearms and other weaponry before they are ordained. Their skill set is meant to allow them to restrain witches when necessary. Aside from investigation of supernatural matters, supervising priests are also required to monitor their assigned witch on a daily basis. Through reports of irregular behaviors or potentially hazardous use of witchcraft, the Holy See can nip disloyalty in the bud. Due to the taxing demands and risks associated with the job, not many choose to become a supervising prist. Those who do will often choose to change career paths or return to regular priest duties.
The relationship between a supervising priest and their witch varies greatly. For some, the partnership can feel akin to a casual friendship. For priests less fortunate, they may have to deal with snobby and unruly witches. On the flip side, a witch might find themselves paired with a stuck-up and conservative coot. Regardless, their relationship does not change the fact that they must work together during investigations.
Binding Box
Familiars who lose their “parent” are likely to become violent as they search for a new host, whether they’d be a witch or a human. To deal with this issue, a member of the Ouroboros clan invented the Binding Box, a pocket-sized contraption that is capable of sealing away frenzied familiars. Supervising priests are required to carry at least one on their person during investigations. A drawback of the Binding Box is that a witch must infuse it with his or her magic to activate the sealing feature. Otherwise, the invention will be little more than an ornate wooden box.

magnolia
Gender: Female
Age: 20
Role: Grand Witch
Seven years ago, Magnolia took on the mantle of the Grand Witch after the passing of her mother and predecessor, Daisy. In spite of her tender age, Magnolia has always handled her responsibilities with stoicism. While aloof toward her fellow witches, she is far from apathetic or callous. Her disposition is in direct contrast to Daisy, who was known as a rather jovial yet lackadaisical woman.
Having been raised by Augustin, the previous pope, Magnolia holds fond memories of the older gentleman who treated her as one would a granddaughter. On the other hand, she is rather frosty toward Edward, who has always acted frivolously toward her. She is only begrudgingly civil both to keep up appearances and to honor Augustin's wishes.
Edward Accardi
Gender: Male
Age: 45
Role: Pope
Grandson of his late predecessor, Augustin. Though Edward cares greatly for the clergy and the people of Florana, the sentiment does not extend toward witches. As a relatively young and newly elected pope, he is eager to assert his authority by enforcing stricter regulations on rogue witches. And while courteous on the surface, he is also wary of Magnolia, who has been working as Grand Witch for far longer than he's been the pope.
Ellis Sylvester
Gender: Male
Age: 32
Role: Supervising Priest
As one of the longest-serving supervising priests, Ellis is charged with overseeing all magic-related cases that get passed to the Obsidian Tower. Understanding and agreeable, he is well-respected by his fellow priests. He seems to have an endless well of patience toward witches as well, being able to tolerate most of their shenanigans in the tower.
Primus
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Role: Witch
Clan: Anura
Much like Ellis, his supervising priest, Primus is generally affable toward priests and witches alike. However, his flighty nature and lack of tact have gotten him into trouble more often than not. Prior to Ellis, Primus had been partnered with three other supervising priests, but, in his words, they had all been “dour old pricks” who saw him as a mere annoyance.
Wynn Clair
Gender: Female
Age: 23
Role: Supervising Priest
A rookie supervising priest. What Wynn lacks in experience, she makes up for in spirit. Helpful to a fault, she often volunteers for missions regardless of the dangers associated. Thankfully, her sweet charm and people skills help her get through even the most stubborn of witches and conservatives. Wynn is also a doting priest to her partner, Layna, whom she views as the younger sister that she never had.
Layna
Gender: Female
Age: 21
Role: Witch
Clan: Scorpio
Understanding the Scorpio’s precarious relationship with the Holy See, Layna is reserved and politely distant in order to stay out of trouble. As a result, most members of the Obsidian Tower only know her superficially. Wynn is one of the sole exceptions. Layna indulges in her priest’s desire to act as an “older sister,” and can become oddly possessive toward her at times.

florana, wesland
As both the headquarters of the Holy See and home to numerous witches, Florana makes up for its modest population by attracting countless tourists each year. Visitors can entertain themselves by visiting the city’s commercial areas, or by taking commemorative photos by the Obsidian Tower and Ivory Tower. A way off from the bustle of the tourist hotspots are the residential districts, where one can find the abodes of the pope, clergy members, and witches.
Most, if not all tourists come to Florana either to complete their sacred pilgrimage, or to catch a glimpse of the elusive witches. The juxtaposing reasons for visiting leads to a distinct clash in the atmosphere of the city. On one end of the spectrum, there are fanatics who adore witches as though they were celebrities. On the other, you have deeply religious individuals who would turn their noses up at the mere mention of witches. Most of Florana’s residents are wedged somewhere in the middle– tolerant, but coldly indifferent.
Obsidian Tower
True to its name, the Obsidian Tower is a magnificent building painted pure black. Supervising priests and their witches can be found working on their cases here. While the exterior of the tower appears to be no more than 50 meters tall, the interior is a boundless space, with doors and rooms that seem to continuously shuffle around. This was achieved by the Arachne clan’s witchcraft, and only authorized personnel or those with a guide can navigate through the tower’s halls without losing their way.
Ivory Tower
The official workplace of the pope and clergy members, located at the heart of Florana. Unlike its sister, the Ivory Tower is not imbued with magic, and thus appears as a regular building both inside and out. Unlike her sisters and brothers who work in the Obsidian Tower, the Grand Witch can only be found in the Ivory Tower.
