  • the plot.

Maureen and Oliver Nelson have always wanted the world for their twelve-year-old child, Saffron. They want her to have the best things in life, the best clothes, the best toys, the best education – and so on. So, it was no surprise that the married couple decided to take a trip to one of the most pristine universities within their area to scoop out the bar their daughter needed to reach to be able to attend. That’s where they met Rohan; a twenty-three-year-old student who was on his way to completing his Masters in Education. What made Rohan stand out from all the other students? Well, Rohan was riding on a scholarship. His time spent at the university wasn’t because Mummy and Daddy paid their way through; he got there through will power and brains.

And it inspired the Nelson family.

Luckily for them, Rohan worked as a private tutor to help pay the bills at home. They exchanged information and within a week, Rohan was on their doorstep and ready for their first private tutoring class together. And he has done so for almost a full year now. Tutoring Saffron three times a week for two hours each day, Rohan has slowly become part of the family. Even when he’s not technically working, he is willing to spend time with Saffron. Whether it was playing basketball with her and the neighbour kids or jumping onto the X-Box to play some games, Saffron was like a little sister to him.

As Rohan became more apart of the family, spending additional time around the house, it gave him the opportunity to get to know Maureen. He also began to pick up on the tension between Maureen and Oliver. In saying that, Maureen also took more notice in Rohan. She began to learn more about his home life, noticing and picking up on subtle injuries along the way. But that’s not all she’s starting to notice about him… And the feelings are mutual.

The house was silent.

A rather odd occurrence in Nelson household until Rohan Lui arrived into their lives. Saffron Nelson was an thirteen-year-old girl, and who had ever heard of a teenager (or any child, to be honest) living in a house without making some sort of noise? Whether it was running around with her friends, singing on the top of her lungs, doing the latest tiktok trend, playing his video games, or exploring the outdoor area. The girl was always on the go and always full of energy. So, whenever Rohan Liu entered the household, the maids treated him like some sort of God. For whenever Rohan was in the house, it meant the Nelson household was calm for at least an hour or so, and one could finally relax.

A wide grin fell upon Rohan’s face, proudly gazing at the girl as Saffron was going about figuring the problem the correct way. He wondered if this was how his own mother felt when he finally got the knack of maths when she had tried to teach him. In a way, Rohan could see himself in the young girl before him. She was determined and somewhat stubborn, and also very hard working. She wanted to make sure she got all perfectly; just like Rohan would do. He would always want things to be perfect even if it meant stressing himself out beyond repair. And right now, was a perfect example of that.

β€œUgh!” a large groan fell from Saffron’s mouth as she allowed her hands to drop her pencil, and her arms to fall to her side. β€œI’m no good at this!”

β€œYou’re kidding me, right?” Rohan asked, his brows raised as he looked down at the piece of paper the girl had been working on. β€œYou’ve improved so much in such a short time! You got the right answer!”

Saffron’s eyes narrowed as she glared at her teacher. β€œYou’re just saying that so my Mum will pay you.”

A wide smile fell on the tutor’s face, followed by a chuckle. β€œSaffron… I get paid regardless if I’m nice to you or not.” he said, nudging the girl’s shoulder with his open palm. β€œI really mean it. You’ve improved a lot.”

An embarrassed, humble smile fell on the young girl’s face. β€œThank you, sir.”

β€œYour parents aren’t around. What did I tell you about that?” he responded, frowning lightly.

β€œHuh, ah yeah… I’m uh, sorry…” Saffron paused, his cheeks becoming rosy β€œβ€¦ Rohan.”

β€œYou’re such a nerd” Rohan responded with a breathy laugh, bringing his hand up and ruffling the girl’s hair. Saffron chuckled, pushing her teacher’s hand away before her eyes peeked over towards the clock on the wall.

β€œOh! It’s almost dinner time!” the young girl noted before looking back at Rohan. β€œCan you stay for dinner this time? Plleeaasssee. I’ll go and ask my Mum now. Hold on – Muuuuuum!” And before Rohan could politely refuse the offer, Saffron was off like a lightning bolt; racing out of her bedroom and towards the kitchen while screaming out her mother’s name. Slowly placing the maths book that was laid upon his lap onto the table, the male released a soft sigh before standing to his height. Well, I suppose a free meal isn’t something I should turn down? he thought to himself as he placed his hands into his jean pockets and followed the path in which Saffron had run off on.

The smell of meatballs in the oven filled the house, all was quiet at the moment as Rohan was upstairs tutoring Saffron. It was really the only break that Maureen got while at home. She was always at work or attending after school activities, taking care of her family filled up her schedule constantly, so there was rarely any time for herself. Her train of thought drifts off to how life would be if she could just run away from it all, leaving the town with her family and just living on the road, but that wouldn't be beneficial to Saffron, who both parents wanted to succeed in life just as they did. Her only goal was to provide a life that was fulfilling to her daughter and helped her become satisfactory with the path she was on.

DING!

The sound of the timer for the oven goes off, snapping the woman out of her thoughts and back to reality, she jumped slightly as the sound was unexpected, how long was she zoned out for? It really didn't matter, all that did was that the food wasn't burnt, it would just make things harder on her as she already had enough stress to deal with. Carefully, Maureen reaches into the oven with mitted hands, and retrieved the baking dish which contained the meatballs that had been cooking for the last 30 minutes, the pasta wasn't too far behind either. As she began to plate the dinner, a voice could be heard coming down the stairs,

"Muuuuuum!”

Maureen turned around to see her daughter, Saffron, standing in front of her with pleading eyes, there was a question coming next and so she prepared herself on whether or not she would say yes or no. Typically, this look was only given when the young girl wanted one of her friends to come over, or vice versa, but this time it was a different request. "Can Rohan pleeeaaassseeeeee stay for dinner?" A sigh escaped the woman's mouth as this is a much simpler request than one of her friends coming over for dinner. "Well, of course, dear." Just as she had given this answer, she sees Rohan make his way into the kitchen, he wasn't too far behind Saffron. "We'd love to have you join us for dinner, Rohan. Obviously this is only if you would like to, we have plenty of food for us all."

A smile spread across her face towards the boy that was standing behind her daughter, not soon after he had entered, her husband came into the kitchen as well. "Glad you could join us, Oliver. Rohan will be joining us for dinner tonight, if you don't mind." She continued to plate the meal and set them down at the table for the four of them. A glass of wine is poured for into three glasses for Maureen, Oliver, and Rohan, if he so pleased to have it. Saffron received a glass of water, and then it was time for everyone to eat.

Saffron’s excitement and zealous determination to have Rohan over for dinner was quite remarkable if we were being completely honest. A smile spread across the boy’s face, followed by a chuckle as he watched the teenager bounce all over the house in search of her mother, who was cooking dinner. Of course, as he reached the kitchen where Maureen stood, cooking dinner, he dropped the wide grin into a more sombre expression. After all, there was always the chance that Mrs Nelson could say no. He also didn’t want Saffron to think that his smile on his face was greatly relieved at the answer. It would break the poor girl’s heart, after all. So, he stood at the doorway of the kitchen, his side leaning against the door frame and his arms crossed over as he watched the pre-teen ping off the walls as she asked her mother.

His brows raised in curiosity, and quite frankly, he was a bit surprised, too, as Maureen had agreed. Of course, it wasn’t the first time he had been asked to stay for dinner. But there was always something on afterwards, to which he would have to decline the offer kindly. Today, however, there were no excuses. He was completely free, and Saffron knew it. She would often pry into his life, asking him if he had any university study that week, and knew his schedule like the back of her hand. There was no escaping this dinner now.

β€œI mean,” he began, giving a slight shrug β€œIf that’s okay, I suppose. I don’t want to intrude or anything.”

β€œShe said yes! She said yes!” Saffron chanted with excitement, giving a dance of victory on the spot. The dancing, however, came to a pause with the sudden entrance of Mr Nelson. Rohan stood up straight, dropping his arms from crossing his chest and instead placed them behind his back. There was such a difference between Maureen and Oliver. With Maureen, Rohan always felt he could be at least a bit more comfortable, relaxed, and even casual around her. With Oliver, however, it felt like everything was business. That Rohan was nothing more than the help. And it was quite evident with the way his face had dropped as Maureen had mentioned Rohan was joining them for dinner tonight. His brows dropped into a frown, and his mouth began to hang as he tried to collect words of protest. But that changed as his daughter came into the picture.

β€œDad!” Saffron squealed, running over to give her father a firm squeeze. β€œRohan is joining us for dinner!” Her face was full of joy, radiating light.

β€œIs he now?” Oliver chuckled, putting his daughter’s back. Well, how could he say no to his only daughter? He turned to Rohan, giving him a firm nod; as if it was a sign of approval. Well, geez, there was no need for words, apparently. Rohan gave him a small nod in return as if it was some weird code between the two males. Saffron returned from her father’s embrace and made her way to Rohan’s side.

β€œYou can sit next to me!” she said, bursting with excitement, as she took hold of her tutor’s hand and began to drag him over to the table. Sliding into her chair, she patted the seat next to her to indicate where he would be sitting. He chuckled, saying a thank you, before sitting at the table next to the girl. Oh, wine? Rohan thought to himself, his brow raising curiously. It had been a while since he had had any alcohol. It also didn’t help that he was a complete lightweight, and one glass could be the end for him. Oliver sat down at the table, taking a sip of his own wine while eyeballing Rohan from over the rim of the glass. Almost as if he was offending Oliver and the Nelson family for not drinking. Okay, I suppose it’s drinky time, Rohan thought to himself, picking up the glass of wine and bringing it to his lips for a soft sip.

He just needed to get through this dinner without getting plastered but still showing respect to the Nelson family.

It wasn't long after the family had sat down, that she noticed how lovely it was to actually have everyone sat down eating together for once. Typically, Oliver wasn't there by the time Maureen and Saffron sat down to eat, leaving the two women in his life to eat alone, once more. She turns and peers at Rohan over her wine glass, taking note that he wasn't drinking, should she have asked him before pouring him a glass? Regardless if he drank it or not, she wouldn't be too concerned, wine isn't for everyone, but it was a perfect pair with the meal. If it wasn't her, Oliver would for sure drink the rest, and then retire into his office for the rest of the night.

The four sit at the table for a couple hours, joking and laughing, having a grand ole' time, Maureen looks down at her watch to check the time, it was 8pm. "Saffron, it's time for you to get bathed and ready for bed, sweetheart." The mother smiles at her child, "Tell Rohan goodnight, and then off you go." Saffron gives a groan, not wanting to go to depart from the group just yet, but sadly it was time for her to retreat to bed.

Gathering all of the dishes from the table, there was slight surprise when she noticed that Rohan had actually drank the wine she had given him. "I hope dinner was sufficient enough for you, after all, it's very important to keep a full stomach when studying." Maureen spoke to Rohan, her back facing him as she washes dishes in the sink. Once she finished up, she checked her watch again, revealing that it was now 9pm and the buses had stopped running at this point.

"I'm so sorry to have kept you so late, let me give you a ride home, yeah?" She grinned at the boy, wanting to make sure that he got home safe, and maybe, just maybe get to know him just a little bit more than she did before. There was something about him that was different, and she really did enjoy his company, maybe he could help out with more than just tutoring. The house really could use some extra hands on deck with how busy everyone is.

Act sober, act sober, act sober

The twenty-four-year-old was having a great old time trying to act like that wine didn’t just go straight to his head. Dinner had finished, Saffron was off to the bathroom to have a shower and then off to bed, and the master of the house was nowhere to be seen. Maureen was washing the dishes, which Rohan had intentions of asking if she needed help with. But, before asking if she needed any assistance, he thought that maybe cleaning up the study where they had been doing their lesson in was the top priority.

Every time he leaned down to pick something up, he felt like he was about to go head over heels and fall flat out onto the floor. In fact, as a pen fell to the ground, he had attempted to pick it up as if there wasn’t alcohol in his system. He had significantly failed, losing balance and landing on the floor with a thump! The second time something fell on the ground, he had decided that’s it! That’s your fate! Deal with it and pretended as if he had not seen the piece of scrap paper on the floor. What probably should’ve taken fifteen minutes tops to clean dragged out to much, much longer.

Upon returning back to the kitchen with his backpack in hand, he noticed that Maureen had finished all the dishes. Oh…, well, now he just felt plain rude. She spoke, offering him a ride causing his eyes to widen slightly. No, they weren’t widened by shock or excitement; but rather his brain thought that opening his eyes wider would aid in hearing the before him speak and processing it. β€œOh,” he finally spoke, quite unaware of how much time had passed since he had left to go and clean up the study. His eyes quickly searched for the closest clock in their area. Once found, his eyes squinted as he attempted to read the moving device. 9:03 pm. β€œOhhh… yeah… That is late”

Normally, he wouldn’t have minded being out so late, walking the streets in search of buses that ran throughout the night, or even riding his bike from point a to point b. But this time, he was not in any situation to trust himself with any of those methods. He could only imagine how much that wine affected his navigation skills. And so, he turned his gaze from the clock back to Maureen, his eyes widening once more as if it would help with their communication and conversation.

β€œIf it’s not too much of a hassle?” he said to the woman, fiddling with the straps of his backpack that he held in his hands. β€œEven if you just like… drop me off at Saint Jude Cathedral? It can be a bit tricky driving into the area our house is in” Oh, but where were his manners? β€œOh! Your dishes! Did you wash them all already? Did you need me to help dry them and put them away?”
