Welcome to Auverand
575548

A land shrouded in house rivalries, some on the brink of war while others lie in wait, ready to pick up the remains of Auverand once it has been torn apart. Five major houses rule this land, all hungry for a seat in the captial city of Bellguard, eager to rule the land how they please. Dwarven smiths, Dweller mercenaries, it is not just humans that reside in this land. Magic lives here, in the depths of The Wilde, in the mountain passes of The Strands. Life here in Auverand in not for the faint of heart to say the least. Here, you must have your wits about you. Make friends and enemies, make lovers and seek fighters.
Above all, it would do you well to stay alive.

Before entering the country, you may be stopped by some hired mercenaries, courtesy of House Payne. You may want to brush up on your Auverand histories should this happen, which can be found in the Lore section of our library. When you're finished there, don't try to slip past the guards. Fill out their little sheet to keep track of those in and out of the country, otherwise you'll be posted for wanted. Believe me when I say that Millhold's cavalry doesn't take intruders well.

If you have questions regarding lore or character sheets, be sure to send a raven over to txlos txlos

[/div][/div] [div class="Name"] Linota Mercer[/div]
The beginnings of a winter breeze blew thick through the tall wildgrass that grew in the plains between Millhold and The Wilde, giving some similarity to two holds that couldn't have been more opposite. It was in these unruly opens that Linota felt as though she didn't have to uphold her title as a Lady of Millhold, or a Lady at all for that matter. It didn't suit the ginger girl, not to her at least. Anyone who was to come across the girl wouldn't be in question of it though. Her pale complexion clear against fiery orange locks that swirled and twisted down the length of her torso, sapphire eyes shining in contrast to the deepness of her hair. It may have pained her, but Linota screamed to have noble blood in her veins. Luckily, out here she was just a girl of Auverand, an emerald green cloak around her shoulders and a deep brown, heavy material dress keeping her from freezing. Winter was beginning to settle, the signs of an early snow beginning to swirl in the air, but the chill didn't phase her too much. The Eastern side of Auverand always seemed cooler, the men and women bundled in their furs and leathers with ale in their cups and heavy meats on the table. Fireplaces were abundant through the Eastern cities while the West enjoyed warmer, kinder weathers. Growing up in Millhold, Linota was used to the chill, but couldn't help but wonder what the warmths of Westnor or even Bellguard were like.

Reaching down, Linota plucked a wildflower from one of the bushes that lined the traveler's path she had chosen to take, the steed's gait slow and lofty as per usual of their daily rides. The plains were quiet, almost unnaturally so. Not that the ginger-haired girl minded, for it was in these moments of peace that she was allowed to wonder of the rest of Auverand she had yet to see, wonder of the men that built the holds she had learned of as a child, wonder of The Wilde. Linota was forbidden from the hold when she was just a girl, attacked by a wildcat, slit from shoulder to chest. It was no one's fault, though her father and forbid she go near the city again. Yet it still mystified Linota, the magic that seemed to lurk in the woods, the mysteries that were to be uncovered. Maybe one day...

It wasn't until Maud, the girl's beloved mount, began to stamp his feet that Linota was shaken from her day-dreamed state, nimble fingers gripping at the reins as she looked around. The subject of her horse's upset was spotted immediately, and with it came a small ounce of fear that struck into the ginger girl's heart. Men in dark armor carrying the banner of house Payne were cascading over the hillside, some on horseback while others trudged on foot. "It's alright, Maud. They won't bother us," she spoke softly, petting the horse's neck slow in a steady rhythm. Only one of the men was recognizable; the Payne boy. He had visited Millhold once or twice looking for a new horse, and for a pretty pouch of silver, the Mercer's had given him just that.

However this time, the Payne boy was accompanied by mercenaries, trained and bought fighters most likely headed to serve the grime that inhabited Bellguard. With a deep breath leaving her chest, Linota righted her posture, sitting straight in her saddle. A couple of Wildemen weren't going to scare her. At least, not to their faces.

[/div][/div] [div class="Name"] Lord Daegon Payne[/div]
"'Tis bit chilly out 'ere innit mi'lord?" A stout man in shiny knight armor asked the man riding next to him. The man replied to the knight bluntly. "It is." The two were both riding horse-back in front of a large group of mercenaries; specifically warriors of the Payne House under the service of House Vogaul. The smaller man in the front was Lord Daegon Payne, he was the son of Randlor Payne, the head of the House. "Mi'lord, we should stop soon, at an inn! The men here haven't seen a woman in days, much less tasted a drop of Ale!" The Knight said in a slightly pitiful tone of voice. Daegon thinks for a moment and sighs, "Alright Sir Hanock, we shall stop at the next inn we see." Sir Hanock smiles widely, his round rosy cheeks seem to almost pop off of his face like a pimple. "Thank you mi'lord, the men are grateful, I am grateful!" He says. Lord Daegon glances over at his companion. "Sir, you aren't lowborn, stop saying 'mi'lord! It is my lord and--"

Before the young noble could finish his sentence, they spot a figure a few hundred feet ahead on a horse. "Halt! Halt!" Daegon calls back to his troops, holding a fist in the air. "Mi'lord-- my lord, you stay here! I'll approach and see who it is." Lord Daegon shakes his head and dismounts his horse. "No. We shall both go." Sir Hanock continues to protest as Lord Daegon takes his sword off of his horse mount, but his pleas fall to dead ears. As they make their way over to the figure, a cold breeze blows by, causing the young lord's eyes to water slightly; The gods must think it is a great look for first impressions. Upon reaching the figure, they realize it is a woman, this does not lower Daegon's guard however as he rests his hand on the hilt of his sheathed sword.

Lord Daegon inspected the woman, noticing her bright hair and elegant, yet practical, attire; she was obviously high-born. Daegon was also high born, and his armor screamed it as well; it was handcrafted and gifted to him by the Vogauls as an enlistment bonus. It was crafted from dark black-steel and had glorious engravings in it that would strike fear in his enemies and implore admiration from his comrades. Draped around his shoulders and loosely wrapped around his neck was a bear-pelt scarf; a common luxury in The Wilde, these scarves were usually worn by the hunter of the very bear it came from as a trophy of sorts.

After a few moments of observation, Lord Daegon smirked,
"Now do tell me, what is a Lady doing out her by herself, and don't try to say you're not! it would take a blind bastard to not realize that you're high-born." He said with a deep chuckle. He wiped his eyes as he awaited a response from the woman, he grew up in the cold but most of his time has been spent in Bellguard since he started working as a Sellsword; this caused him to un-acclimate to his naturally cold environment. [/div][/div] [div class="Name"] Linota Mercer[/div]
As suspected, the Payne boy, as well as a fellow mounted mercenary, dismounted and departed from their group to greet Linota. Well, one may call it a greeting while another may call it a warning. Both men had hands placed on their weapon's handle, ready to draw at the first sign of danger. The redhead was the farthest thing from danger when it came to the open, unregulated plains, only sporting a bow that she was still figuring out how to use, but still. Linota often found that it was those who were trained to fight that seemed to fear everything.

"Perhaps a Lady is out here alone to do just that, be alone," The answer was cut and coarse, voice lacking of any emotion. These men didn't intimidate her, not when she was on the back of one of the finest horses in Auverand. Maud had only been expelled from the cavalry due to a fear of fire, a fear that the stallion would rarely meet, but I digress. Leaving the thoughts of a quick escape behind, Linota nodded her head to the mare that she would've recognized anywhere, a black horse with a white star on it's forehead. She was a feisty horse, one that the petite girl had picked out for the young Lord before her to try the day he came into Millhold. "The horse," Tone was softer now, eyes less defensive in nature as they fell from the steed back to the blue eyes of the Payne boy. For the life of her she couldn't remember his name, only that he wasn't completely horrid on horseback. "You picked her up more than a fortnight ago. Has she been well with you?" The question was genuine, as the well being of past stable-residences meant the world to Linota. Only horses hand selected by her and her father were put up for sale, and they fetched a fair amount of coin. Therefore, it was only fair that she saw they went to good homes. And from what her eyes could see, the mare looked well-fed, well-groomed, and overall calm.

It took a moment but reluctant eyes went back to the two men on foot before her, Maud beginning to lower his head so that Linota could see them better. The Payne boy looked just how he had the last time they had briefly met. His eyes were slightly sunken in from presumed exhaustion, his armor clean from not yet meeting battle while black hair frayed about in a mess. It made her wonder the type of life those in The Wilde led, how rough it must be to deal with the overflow of creatures that lurked in the surrounding woods. If their upcoming leader of the hold looked so worn, it couldn't have been a sign of a peaceful life. But still, it remained to be none of her business. If the ginger girl's father was to find out that she was conversing with a Payne outside of business she wouldn't be allowed to ride in the plains for many a moon, and that wasn't something she was willing to jeopardize. So, conversation remained minimal, her posture unsinking and confidence unwavering.

[div class=container][div class=image] [div class=title]Diana Fairelan [div class=line][/div] [div class=lil]the fire elemental[/div][/div] [div class=b][div class=lilimage][/div][/div][/div] [div class=info] [div class=post][div class=scroll]Despite the thin, smooth fabrics and sorry excuse for a cloak, the cold winter chill was very much appreciated by a particularly hot-blooded (physically, not metaphorically) individual. The sound of dead leaves crunched underneath her heeled boots as she hummed softly to herself, enjoying the numbing kisses the winter breeze had to offer. With ruddy cheeks the lone dame trekked onwards with seemingly aimless direction, taking her time to move at a leisure pace.

It was much cooler here than it was in Westnor and Diana found she much preferred the wintry season as opposed to the usual dry heat found back in her hometown. Travelling now felt worthwhile and there was that rejuvenating sense of freedom, being able to go where she wanted, do what she wanted, see what she wanted—though, all for a finite amount of time. Her vacation could stretch to a month at most. Diana dare not leave her business and House Quorse alone for long, fearing it would crumble in her absence. (Such arrogance she held in her position).

The downside to her vacation would be the fact that she did most of her travelling by foot. If the gods had not damn her to scare away any animal in existence, perhaps she would've had an easier time moving to and fro. She hated having to walk long distances, and yet that was the only option she had.

Horses would sooner kick her dead than allow her to ride on their backs. It was really unfortunate. Times like these when the soles of her feet were sore and the nearest inn was still miles away, Diana could not help but curse the gods for creating such a ridiculous rift between the Elementals and animals. What have she ever done to deserve this? Nothing, she'd argue.

Thinking about it brought on her usual haughty snort, though her mood did not sour further as her fiery eyes caught sight of a group of people up ahead. A group of people... all on horses.

Well. This was a predicament.

Should she carry on forward and proceed to scare off a whole Calvary of horses or should she take a detour and spare the poor beasts a fright? Diana wasn't a particularly kind lady but she was fickle. Pulling a coin out of her pocket, she decided to let the fates decide what she should do. Heads, she'll carry on forward. Tails and she'd head off in another direction, off route.

Flipping the silver in the air, the coin was caught and balanced onto the back of her palm with graceful ease. The feathery tails of the silvery griffin glinted in the sunlight. Tails it is. What a philanthropist she was. "Those poor soldiers ought to be grateful," Diana thought as she picked up her skirts and began the uphill trek off road. Who would've thought that not too far off from where she was headed were three others, all on horseback... defeating the whole purpose of her detour.

[div class="Image"] [/div][/div] [div class="Name"] Isana Chiari of House Vogaul[/div]

[div class="Line"][/div] Isana was lounging in the study, while her sister Rosalina was poring over a recent trade report between the family and one of their Wildmen contacts. The younger sister had been doodling idly while staring out the window, watching the closet tree swaying in the brisk north wind, the few remaining leaves desperately clinging to the otherwise bare branches. Her muscles twitched involuntarily and she shuddered. Change was being brought in that wind. Yes, there was the obvious change of autumn to winter, but some part of her could sense a deeper shift, though what exactly that meant she didn't know. She shrugged off the intrusion of intuition, stretching her limbs and trying to pop her back against the chair she was seated in. Isana reached into her left sleeve and carefully unwrapped the small python that had been resting around her arm. "Hello my beautiful babe," she cooed at her snake. Elias squirmed in her gentle grasp, readjusting to his new location for a minute before settling into a knot of scales in her hands.

She carefully set the reptile down on the wooden desk in front of her and rifled through her pockets. She found the dead mouse that she'd discovered in the hallway earlier and set it down in front of the snake. "Guess what I have for you, my dear?" Elias uncurled from his knot and sniffed at the object with his tongue. Deciding that it was interesting to him, he sprang forwards and snatched it up into his coils. The snake opened his jaws wide, then wider to accommodate the tiny corpse. Rosalina looked up from her work with a grimace. "That is disgusting," she shuddered. Isana grinned. "I find it fascinating." Rosalina watched with mild horror as the snake slowly forced the dead mouse down its throat, clearly not wanting to watch but being unable to look away. After a moment she finally broke the spell of distraction that had briefly gripped her.
"Isa, I can't get anything done with you and that fiend hanging around!" she snapped. Isana, across the table, was cackling with glee at this declaration. "Then my work here is done!" Rosalina rolled her eyes. "My patience for this work is certainly done." She stood up from the table, ignoring the papers strewn around, and marched out of the room.

The second her sister had fled the space, Isana flipped the documents around so they were now upright and readable from her perspective. Opening remarks, an introduction with nothing of substance... Numbers and figures... Nothing useful! She finished reading and leaned back in her chair to stare at the ceiling for a moment. There had been some rumors about the messengers and traders in her family's employ needing additional security from the local raiders as of late, but there was little in this report to confirm this. As loath as the Count Chiari was to employ such mercenaries to protect his goods, it might become more necessary if events continued as they had been. Isana shifted her weight forward so the chair was flat on all four legs again. She took a final glance at the page. The was a suggestion to initiate talks with the Payne family, which she noted and filed away in her mind. She had not heard about such interactions happening recently, so perhaps that would become more important later. The barbarians, while crude and unpleasant, had their uses after all.

[/div][/div] [div class="Name"] Lord Daegon Payne[/div]
"My horse? What the-- oh! You must be a Mercer, should've known from the hair, you look like your bloody head is on fire!" Daegon laughed to himself, lowering his hand from the sword's hilt letting his guard down slightly. "She's doing well enough, hasn't faltered too much from the weight of my armor." He slaps his bracers against his breastplate a few times causing the usual 'Clang clang' sound of metal hitting metal. The lord turns his attention back to Lady Linota with a puzzled look on his face, "Now why would you want to be alone? These roads are watched by bandits, not just us; and I'm sure you know well what they'd do to a young high-born girl like you." The roads surrounding The Wilde have become rather dangerous as of late, the small and manageable number of brigand camps usually reported in the area has nearly tripled in their amount. This unusual growth must mean that they are uniting under one banner somehow; Brigands usually would never get along with each other, therefore someone smart must be leading them.

"Now tell me, what are you really doing out here...especially with no escort or bodyguard--" The young lord was cut off mid-sentence by the sound of rustling brush to the far right of him. His puzzled expression turned to one of anger, "Are you not alone after all?" He exclaimed as he drew his sword, signaling for his men to aim their bows towards the woods where the sound came from. 'Damn what if it is Brigands, what a shite time for an ambush' Daegon thought to himself before calling out to the mystery in the bushes; "If you want to be sneaky, it'd be best to avoid stepping on fallen leaves! Now show yourself before we show you what an arrow looks like when it is flying towards your head!"

This threat brings his thoughts back to the first time he killed a man; he was at the young age of eleven! Daegon had already mastered the sword, for the most part, and was practicing his archery a short distance away from the Keep. "Alright boy, take a deep breath, and at the peak of that breath, hold it, aim, then release!" Said a slightly thinner and younger Sir Hanock. Daegon followed these instructions the best he could but faltered slightly on the breathing control, causing the bolt to fly past the hay-bale target with a 'whiz!' Sir Hanock grimaced and shook his head. The lord began reloading the crossbow as the knight started lecturing him, "You have got to get that breathing under control boy! If you can swing a bloody blade around you can--" Sir Hanock's criticism was cut short by a club to the back of the head. The attacker came into view as the knight's body fell limp to the ground. "Whadda' we got 'ere? Little lord an' a knight?" The attacker said with a thick wildling accent; she was a brigand!

Lord Daegon gulped and looked onward with fear. The brigand began searching Sir Hanock's unconscious body and pulled out a small pouch of gold and an ornate dagger; it was forged in Bellguard, this was made evident by the Vogaul crest engraved into the hilt. "Heheh, this will do jus' nicely. Don't want either of ya' comin' back for it though." The brigand said as she started walking towards the young lord, dagger in hand.
"S-stay back! I'm warning you!" Daegon said, back peddling slowly and bringing the crossbow up to his shoulder. The brigand gave a deep chuckled and continued pressing forward. "Ya' don't even know how to fire that thing! I saw ya' tryin' earlier, jus' give up boy!" The young lord kept backing up until he ran into a tree; he pressed against it with his back roughly and said under his breath, "Breathe." He inhaled deeply, stopping at the breath's peak. "Aim." He snapped his eyes open and lined up the crosshair with the advancing woman. "Loose!" With that final word, he pressed the trigger. The bolt flew from the end of the crossbow and straight into the chest of the brigand. Blood spurted out of her mouth as she slowly looked down at the bolt that impaled her. After a few seconds, she released the dagger and fell to the ground dead.

Daegon shook his head, bringing himself back to reality. "Alright, I am going to give you to the count of three to come out!" He yelled towards the woods. Whether it was friend or foe, if you grew up in The Wilde or Bellguard, then you know not to trust anyone, especially not a sneaking sound in the trees. "One." He counted off loudly. His mother used to use this method on him when he was a child, he never let her get to three. No one ever gets to three. "Two!" He sounded off even louder this time. After a few long moments of waiting he gave a deep sigh, the uncertainty of who caused the rustle wasn't enough for him to actually fire upon it; it could be an animal after all, and Daegon loves the wildlife of The Wilde "Look I don't know what I'll do if I get to three, no one usually gets to three so just...come out already!" Did she hear that correctly? They'd show her an arrow through her head?

The nerve! She'd like to see them try.

Such vulgar words had her bristling with indignance. That was no way to talk to a lady. The rude behavior was uncalled for and Diana almost wanted to snap back in a challenge. If she had been any less of a lady, perhaps she would've. Taking a sharp inhale, Diana chose to hold her tongue, but out of petty spite, she did not grant the stranger the satisfaction of stepping forward.

Only after his childish countdown did the babe move forward. Her fiery eyes blazed with curiosity and mild annoyance as she walked into the clearing, out from the bramble. Her appearance startled the horses nearby, bringing them to fret nervously. Diana did not blame them. She was an Elemental. It was in her constitution.

She studied the three before her, all towering as they sat on horseback. One of them seemed to be struggling to stay on their skittish horse which made Diana heave an internal sigh. This was precisely why she chose to go off route in the first place.

"Is there something you want from me, kind sir?" she asked the men first, given how it was them who had addressed her. She sounded somewhat piqued that she had to be dragged into the scene. Hopefully they would see that she was no threat and allow her to carry on her merry way...

Her eyes trailed from the two heavily armored men to the other lady with them. Her hair of brilliant vermillion and gold reminded Diana of the sunset over evening horizons, a fiery color which brought her to recall House Mercer. If she remembered correctly, Lord Mercer had a young daughter with crimson hair. Perhaps this was her?

"My lady," she gave a short nod of her head in greeting to the miss. Whether or not the redhead was the Mercer's noble lady, Diana felt it was only fair that she greeted them with the same respect she would've liked to be given.

[/div][/div] [div class="Name"] Linota Mercer[/div]
Linota rolled turquoise eyes at Daegon's insistence. In her mind, there was nothing on these roads that couldn't be handled by the bow that was strapped to her mount's saddle. It was the typical, most common thought that seemed to stretch across Auverand, the thought that a woman would be in danger should she choose to venture out alone. But the red-haired girl despised such ideals. It was suffocating, sitting in a room all day, sewing and being told what was and wasn't appropriate for a lady of the house to partake in. And yet even in her attempts to escape such words, here she was in the plains, being told the exact things her mother would have. Except this time, it was from the tongue of an arrogant Payne.

Just as she was about to speak, scold the man for daring speak to her in such a way, chaos seemed to erupt from thin air. The men before her became hostile, shouting at a rustling brush and claiming that it was something of hers. Linota stood puzzled, wondering if one of the hounds had followed her as they sometimes do, or perhaps it truly was a threat to be concerned with. None the less, the petite girl stepped her stallion a few feet away from the bush in question, running a hand along his neck in an attempt to calm him from his own panicked state. Teal eyes flicked to the Daegon as she did this, brows furrowing as she examined his face. It wasn't the expression of a hunter, ready to claim his kill, but one of confusion and volatile anxiety. The black-haired man almost looked as though he was... scared.

Though the fear didn't last long as the inhabitant emerged in the form of a fair, blonde haired girl. Petite in size, she was rather beautiful with a mischievous look about her. Her eyes glowed a brilliant saffron yellow, holding a slight amusement to them. Linota gave the girl a polite smile towards her, feeling the tension of her horse underneath her seat. Whoever this was, she seemed harmless enough, however it was clear that Maud wanted nothing to do with the girl. "My apologies for the shouting," Linota chuckled, loosening her reins and allowing her steed to reposition himself in the clearing, giving space between her and both parties of individuals around her. "The mercenaries are getting more and more... excited for their work," The words held a stifled laugh, one that she couldn't help. Seeing two burly men, trained mercenaries from The Wilde, ready to aim their weapons at a young woman. It was hysterical to say the least. "And as for you," Linota directed her gaze back to Daegon, eyes squinted in annoyance. Mercers and Paynes weren't exactly chummy with one another, however she was not going to tolerate disrespect from the likes of a bought fighter. "You'd do well to remember who supplies your horses. If I so choose to ride alone than that it my choice. A choice that doesn't concern you."

Aire of House Mercer
Aire threw on his black cloak and started for the stables, it was a cold day, the beginning of winter, and he wasn't happy that he had to work in these conditions. "Whatever brings the coin home" was a saying that repeated in his head every day. Arriving at the stables he started off by just doing a count of the steeds and once all were present and accounted for, he moved to clean the floors of each stable after which in itself took a hefty amount of time, he then brushed the manes of the horses and cleaned any dirt that may have gotten on them and then he filled the feeding troughs with hay and the barrels with water. He took a break after cleaning one side of the stables, the stables were arranged with one row of stables lining each wall as you walk into space, a well sat in the center if the space and bales of hay and a multitude of other tools sat on shelves on the far wall of the walkway. He opened a pack of dried jerky and a waterskin from his knapsack and leaned against the good longing for another job to slay monsters in the forests and plains of Auverand to fall into his lap.

[/div][/div] [div class="Name"] Eavan Mercer[/div]

Eavan did not like when her sister went off without her. It was surely a 'younger sibling' thing-- whatever sister did, she wanted to do too. When they were younger though, this was not always the case. Mother mostly gave them the same duties, and there wasn't much to envy about Linota. Now though? She'd kill for her perfect face and red hair. Eavan felt too plain and mousy to be desired, but it didn't mean she wasn't. 'Must only be good for pushing out children,' she thought with a tinge of bitterness. This role was something she desired, yes. It was surely glamorous and easy to be a lord's wife, but she hated the thought of being seen for only one thing. Luckily she hadn't favored any of the suitors mother and father presented. "Good for me..." Eavan rose from where she was sitting; a muted emerald green ottoman below the window, in view of the grasslands beyond her home. How much longer could she stay here without going mad? Restlessly she'd begin to pace, wondering what it was that she could do to ease her desire to flee. Soon, a small pouch caught her eye. Sitting atop a cherry wood end table in the corner she'd notice an innocent-looking coin purse. Bingo! Taking the bag, she made for her wardrobe and retrieved a riding cloak. Oh gods, she was terrible at horseback, but it would have to do. Where she was going, Eavan was not sure. All she needed was a horse. And a dog. And maybe a bird. Sneaking out of the castle was easy enough. Many times she'd taken shortcuts through the maid's quarters or the kitchen without the watchful eyes of her assistants or guards. They'd get it back to her parents if she was seen. A quick pace moved her into the open, through one of the back corridors and finally towards the stables where a horse was easily acquired. Evie didn't favor anyone in particular, so she mounted the first one she saw: a white mare who seemed less than happy to see her, but obeyed anyway. Maybe it was the familiarity. As girls, they often played together in the stables, and as a result the horses knew them as safe people. Eavan started off with a small nudge to the mare's side, prompting the beast to meander forward, and then trot, gaining pace and leading the girl hastily towards the woods. There was a safe path through the trees she was sure to be undetected on. As they moved Evie began to grow both nervous and excited. She'd made it out, and though father's temper would not be kind later, she was used to it. Scolding was just part of their routine. As she grasslands thinned and they eased into the woods she'd prompt the mare to advance, unknowingly nearing her sister and the gaggle of people that had amassed.

Local Coast, The Wilde / Millhold

Legions of seagulls and avians crowded the ports, where strangers upon a mighty vessel have made for land. The distinct anchor sigil that donned the cerulean ensign were none other than that of the Shippers’. Unruly chatters and shouts grew louder, as the ship drifted idly beyond the azure shallows. The illustrious Iron Maiden, as she was called, had harbored a multitude of personnel and goods, some of those said goods were plundered somewhere along the way. As the light dawned from the blanket of the drifting clouds, a figure in brown and gray departed from his quarters, catching the long-awaited moment of respite he had needed after their expedited journey from the stormy seas. Where the gloomy and thunderous embrace of the high seas had once troubled the crew, was now replaced with reticent groans of men and beast alike. An old man, by his white hair and untended beard, made his way past the main mast, before halting by the starboard side of the ship. With the gray, weathered sails receded and her presence parting the streaming waters, the old man let out a slight sigh, as he eyed the distant port of the Wilde.

Across the deck, another, much younger white haired man was pushing aside several members of the crew who were struggling to lift a crate of gunpowder for the cannons. They somehow weren't able to get it to the hold between the five of them and it had started to irritate the merc how they bickered about why they couldn't put the strength necessary to lift it.

Aboard a ship, everyone had a moan it seemed. Elkin had only ever been on a ship a handful of times but there were moments like this one where he felt like the only one who wasn't a damn newborn fawn and actually acted like a hardened man of the sea.

Two big hands gripped either side of the crate and using his legs, he hoisted the large crate up and onto his right shoulder with what appeared to be little effort. He carried the crate of essentials down into the hold and reappeared moments later after he had set it down for the quartermaster to figure out exactly where he wanted it.

Eyes as blue as the ocean glared at the men who bickered like old women among each other, "If you had enough energy to start pointing fingers on who is to blame, then you had enough energy to shut the hell up and do your damn jobs. I'm a sellsword, not a sailor."

As he walked away, he could overhear them muttering about him and how he probably isn't as tough as Elkin thinks he is. This prompted the swift response of the snow-haired man to turn on his heel and walk directly toward them. Their eyes widened and they began to explain but the words were already said. A raised fist and cringe-worthy Whack! Later, the sailor who he assumed said that was unconscious against the floorboards with a broken nose and missing more teeth than he started with.

That was one universal trait among sailors and pirates he realized. If you didn't show them why they HAVE to respect you, they never would. Elkin wasn't even sure if that was the right person he just slammed but the message was obviously clear.

The mage looked up and saw Oban, the captain, leaving his quarters looking like he just got out of bed. Elkin wiped the blood on his fist off on his trousers and briefly glanced about for his shirt before remembering it was down in the sleeping quarters. He approached the captain and gave him a respectful nod, "Sir." He said gruffly.

Oban diverted his attention towards the murmuring chatters in the background, before fixing his gray eyes upon the distinct man that stood before him. It brought him comfort to see Elkin being the same as he always been ever since the latter offered his service for the Old Man. A long year ago it seems, yet it felt as if it was yesterday since Elkin joined the ranks. Like many before him, Oban sought neither to break his men into shape, nor did he find it effective to be an authoritarian figure for them to look up to. Long as they did their bit, Oban found nothing better than to make peace with the treacherous tides and the whirling winds. After all, Shippers were known for their unruliness, and perhaps with it, a certain aura of respect every time one comes across a Shipper. Elkin was perhaps one of the most brashest and intimidating one that Oban had came across throughout his time at sea, if not the only one to assert his fearsome aura among the others. With it, Elkin fit right in and made it as boatswain, the old man thought, as he let out a reticent chuckle.

“The wind may howl, but it could not sway good ol’ Elkin. Happy to see land again, bosun?” Oban said, tapping the man’s shoulder, before turning towards the distant, bustling port.

"Ecstatic." He muttered. A new word he had learned. "You know I've never been one for ships…" he turned back to look at the unconscious sailor, "or people." Or that was what he told people. If the man was anything other than human, he might have gotten away by being shoved across the deck rather than pounded into it.

The only human on the vessel that earned some smidge of trust and respect was the old naval soldier that stood before him right now. While it may not seem like much, it was a huge deal for the mage to put any amount of genuine trust into a person. Much less a human.

"So, what are we pulling into this…." Elkin never recognized ports. He didn't bother memorizing what they looked like. "....country for…. Where are we again?" He asked.

The old man chuckled again, this time slightly louder. Oban couldn’t have agreed more when it comes to dealing with people, or crowds. Over the course of the years frequenting keeps and holds of the other houses, it had only served to further Oban’s disdains for daggered words and curtained intents. That was the very thing that kept him at sea for the last few years, eluding the troubles the world, and somewhere along the way, he had picked up Elkin, of whom was more than what he appeared on the outside. The old man saw potentials in him, something that he has yet to decipher. Perhaps Elkin would best be where they were now, sailing and roaming endlessly without being troubled by the politics of beasts that resided within the Keeps.

However, with their supplies dwindled down to a few days end, as well as the recent storm, the Iron Maiden and her crew had sought refuge to the east. The plains that surrounded Newacre would surely be a welcome sight for the sealanders.

“Between us and Newacre to the east - the plains of the Valleyfolks. Home of the Mercers. The last storm left us little choice but East. I’d rather anchor her here than in Baystrands. Besides, I’m sure the lads have earned their furloughs for the brothels and taverns, lest we deprive ourselves of land, bosun.” Oban spoke, frowning a bit, as the sun harassed his eyes.

The younger man grunted in response and turned his gaze to whatever had caught the old man's sight. Certainly was pretty grasslands in the distance but they weren't here for the sights. "Yes, they've been complaining about women and brothels in the recent days. Even a storm can't put out the fire in a sailor's loins." He stated with some measure of disdain. It wasnt that he had a problem with the men wanting to run off and bang women. It was how much they fuckin' whined about it.

"Do you want me carrying the supplies back again? It'd get done faster than letting these weaklings have at it."

“A vagabond’s becoming of a bosun, from words to acts. But every man must earn their pay. Come, you’re obligated for a few pints with this old man. I can’t seem to think when sober.” Oban replied, prompting Elkin to follow him, as the rowboat lowered beside them.

Elkin, despite being a sell-sword, had managed to earn Oban’s trust and perhaps even friendship, as one would perceive thus. The old Shipper had faith in his fists, and the roars of his past deeds. To Oban, it was almost as if he had longed for a friend, something he did not possess ever since becoming the Commander of the Silver Fleet. The price of power for the Old Reliable was neither his blood nor his faith, but solemn solitude. Where he distanced himself from the politics of the court, Oban had sought refuge within the bosoms of his dear betrothed. But now, all he has was the sea.

“Voice your earnest thoughts, Elkin and indulge this old sailor's intrigues. What say you, regarding mages and elementals?” the Shipper spoke, as the two paced themselves along the coast, shortly after their landing. There, they trod the path towards the rise, of which would provide a clear view of the land.

The suspicion that crossed those blue eyes was not lost on anyone. Elkin was a great many things but above all, he was an honest fool. Lying was not something he could do. So, he didnt even try to hide it as his ire flicked to Oban and back to the streets. A human asking that question raised any and all sorts of red flags in the mage's mind.

Did he figure it out? Elkin had given nothing away at any point. Even injuries he suffered during his time in Oban's employ he allowed to heal naturally for fear of being discovered…

Still….

The old man was kind to him all this time. Though it could have been because he didn't know the truth.

He was about to give Oban a harsh answer but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Oban was nearing 60 years of life and Elkin couldn't help but think his own father would be his Oban's age had Elkin not been such a stupid child. It's how he always felt about the elderly. Those could be his parents. The healer had a soft spot for them. Maybe that's why he held his tongue.

"They're just people. Dwarves are short and good craftsmen. Dwellers are practically one with nature. Humans are short lived but great Jack-of-all-trades types. Orcs were great warriors and smiths."

"Elementals simply can use elements with their will and mages can use strange magic. But they're still people. They bleed like any other. They live and they love. Elementals cant have families of their own but that doesn’t stop them from trying. They're just people, Sir. People who are all eating the same giant shit sandwich that's called life that we are."

From there, Elkin watched for the old man's reaction. He couldn’t begin to imagine what Oban's stance was on the matter.

“Profound. If only the world would had the least of your mind, perhaps we could spare our fates from that of violence.” Oban chuckled. He was glad to hear Elkin’s thoughts on the subject. A forthcoming and dogged marine, Oban enjoyed his company among those like Elkin. While he has yet to learn of his bosun's origins, their respect for each other were more than enough for the old man's fondness of company.

The white-haired young man never struck the Old Man as a student of stoicism on the outside. But altogether, he was quite fond of him over the year. Endowed with his elderly seasons, it was fair to say Oban had treated Elkin as if he was a kin, of whom had long been lost at sea. The brief silence befell the two, as they took into view of the land. Perhaps some company would take heed of their idle respite.

Rosaria sat on a bench in the courtyard alone with Bernie her loyal companion at her feet. She was reading a book quietly feeling the breeze blow through her blonde hair and her sparkly soft eyes gazing around once and a while from her book at the beautiful atmosphere. She thought about her brother Lucal and what he was doing. She closed her book getting up from the bench under a weeping willow tree. Her brother was definitely going to be king and she watched his struggle as she stood on the sidelines as the kings youngest daughter and the only daughter who didn't commit treason. It seemed her older sister was not much a part of the family anymore. She could have been queen but her choices ruined her life. The thought of it made her sick to her stomach. Her head costing something to be swiped from the world because of a poor choice. She didn't know a lot about her sister except she was going to be dead sooner or later. She kneeled down and pet Bernie. "oh, what would I do without your company my friend." She said with a sigh as her blonde curls cascaded over her shoulder as she looked at Bernie before standing up. She averted her gaze and wandered back toward the inside castle hall with Bernie following close behind her. Lady's in waiting would curtsy when she would pass by in respect of her class and authority. She would smile gently and wave briefly before looking away and going into the castle library to put her book away. She set the book on a shelf and gazed looking at the window down the aisle in front of her. She walked toward the window and pushed the curtain aside looking out the window seeing the beautiful view. Sooner or later she could be betrothed for the better for the kingdom but for now, she lived calmly in the castle.

Lucal Vogual, Crown-Prince of Auverand

"Me lord, The King will not be leaving his chamber today. His duties fall to you."

The words echoed out from the high terrace, fading into the breeze that swept across Bellguard and the Royal Palace. For a moment it was silent, then all Lucal could hear was the sound of footsteps as the young messenger retreated back into the hallways of the palace. He was alone again, with only his thoughts for companionship. The King's health had been failing in the recent weeks, his time was coming. Soon, perhaps very soon, Lucal would take the throne. The Lords and Ladies of Auverand would assemble in Bellguard, feasts would be held, tourneys and festivals; and then they would all bend the knee. Just as they had for his father, years and years ago.

Admittedly, the Kingdom was far more fractured now than it was then. In Millhold, there were whispers of war and independence. The Wilde was just as it had always been, unpredictable. The Paynes weren't too be trusted any more than the scoundrels of The Ironfort. Westnor was just as bad as anywhere else, the Mage Families stuck to themselves. Lucal was certain that if it came to war, Bellguard would likely stand on it own.

But they would win.

There was no doubt in his mind. Lucal would keep his kingdom whole, even if he had to baptize the streets of Millhold and The Ironfort in fire. He would Bleed every Payne, Mercer, and Bren if he had to. Lucal Vogual would not go down in history as the man who let his kingdom crumble. Auverand and its mighty houses will bend to his will; or Lucal would break them.

The First Men of Bellguard will be the Last Men of the World. Better to be Lord of ash and bones, than to be a King of nothing.

Lucal turned slowly, his fiery eyes sweeping out across the city of Bellguard. His City. His People. His Power. "Boy, to me." Lucal spoke. Though he appeared calm, Lucal was like hot coals. Any moment he may ignite into flames and lay the torch to those around him. Lucal wasn't known for his kindness, or his mercy. He would be a cruel king...But he would be King nonetheless.

The young messenger boy scrambled back out onto the terrace, bowing before Lucal. "Me Lord, I am here to serve..." The words came out in a whisper, muttered from the breaths of a boy who couldn't have been older than thirteen. He had bright eyes, though the were cast down now in fear. One day he might make a soldier or a adviser, but now the scared adolescent was only a messenger.

"Take this..." Lucal paused, rolling up a small piece of paper and holding it out to the lad. "...to Lady Isana. Inform her that she's been beckoned, and I'd like her to find me immediately. It is important." Lucal spoke.

The boy took the paper quickly. "Yes, Me Lord." He choked out before scurrying away, clearly relieved to escape the presence of the Crown-Prince.

Lucal watched him go before turning his attention back the the city that sprawled out below his high tower.

Auverand would bend, or it would burn. Lucal would offer no other options...

She had walked farther down the hall seeing a messager talking to her brother before leaving. She then walked up to him seeing the boy messager leave him overhearing about lady Isana. "Hello, Brother. How is Father?" She asked worried about his health. She didn't know what kind of king her brother would be, but she would be by his side since she was family and you do not turn on family. She looked to him then away more about of curiosity of what would happen soon. "Are you ready for the responsibility...?" She asked knowing their fathers time was soon. She sighed and laid her hand down and pet Bernie's head. She was ready for anything. She didn't know though how the houses would take her brother being king. She tsked glancing at the window down the hall. "I better leave you be. You must have work to do." She commented as she started to walk past him down the hall more. "I am gonna go outside the gates of the castle for a bit to socialize. It gets quite boring inside which was the main reason she would go out. Was more for fun than politics and maybe she would meet someone she had not seen before. She went back down the corridor out to the stables. She climbs up on a horse deciding to go to the plains for a bit. She liked the fresh breeze she started to gallop through the bridge out into the trail. She made it to the plains a few minutes or so later. She found the weather nice as she watched the clouds move in the sky. "How nice," she said out loud. of course, her appearance was obvious she was a princess wearing a nice dress and a crown.

Aire of House Mercer
While in the midsts of enjoying his time on break, sinking his teeth into a pack of jerky and washing it down and being lost in his thoughts, Aire thought that he was alone in the stables completing his duties like normal--this was not the case. A girl came bursting into the stables, she looked like she had just escaped from shackles or something of that sort, she untied one of the horses, a white-haired one, and rode off. Aire was immediately on his feet
"I have to get the horse back," he said looking around the stables and the only viable option that he had was to take stead himself and ride after the girl. He threw on his cloak retrieved his sword and mounted a black steed and thundered off towards the direction of the girl. As he was riding Aire thought if he had seen this girl before and why she came into the stables in the first place, after all, if he didn't bring both horses back to stables by sundown--it was a thought he tried to put out of his mind so he could focus.

He was in the plains now, maneuvering past trees as well as he could for having no jobs as of late and henceforth no practice. These cold winds were bitting at him, he had wasn't wearing his normal armor, he had no need for it working one of the least dangerous jobs in Auverand. Aire knew that he was nearing another rider when he heard, just barely, the sound of another set of hooves striking the ground with ferocity. He spurred his horse onwards and when he came to a stop he was near a group of others. A boy in black steel armor and a girl with fiery ginger hair, he didn't know who either of the people was but again, the feeling of forgetfulness sunk in once more, there was also another girl, a small being with bold hair and look of a mischevious one striken across her face. After observing the cast for a few moments, he approached the group, leading his horse by the reins with one hand and the other rested on the pommel of his blade.

Of course at first she didn't know she was being followed who in god's name would want to. Apparently, though she was. It wasn't like her to have guests spouting around her. She glanced noticing the guy but then a group of people. Great just my luck hope they aren't hostile which she honestly hoped as she got down from the white Maned horse. She noticed the guy get off as well but was not really amused at being followed. She had been in a hurry to get out of the palace mainly because of the sheer boredom. it wasn't the most lovely thing in the world. "Why did you follow me? Is the horse there are plenty of them." She said not acknowledging the others that were there in the first place. She just wanted to get out for a bit well it happened but not how she expected it to of course. She pets the white horse and smiled taking the joy of being around animals more than people at the moment. She was trying to have no interest in guys anyway. She found this one actually cute but it wasn't her place. she sighed to herself attempting not to draw too much attention she climbed back on the horse. So much for time to myself she thought. She walked through the plains on horseback a bit to make some gap between them. It was her best option to not get too drawn in.

"You'd do best to..." The fire-headed lady went on to remind Daegon of whom he owes the luxury of his horse to. The young lord gritted his teeth angrily and spoke through them in an aggressive yet hushed tone: "And you'd do best to remember whom I serve, my lady." He made sure to communicate his sarcasm on the end of his threat clearly. Following that reply, he slammed his blade into his sheath and nodded his head to the bowmen, signaling them to stand down. "Its alright men, just another girl lost in the woods." With that offensive comment, he struts back to his horse, which was currently stamping anxiously; an odd display of fear from the mount that had shown nothing but bravery until now.

"Its alright girl..." He said as he patted her neck comfortingly. Daegon heard from several of the 'crazy' people in his town, they call themselves wargs, that animals can see things that humans cannot, such as ghosts, magic, and many other supernatural occurrences. He glared at the lady menacingly, she looked neither ghostly or magical, so why was his horse acting so strangely? Sir Hanock made his way over and shook his head in disappointment at Daegon, "Mi'Lord, you should've paid more attention to your cavalry studies; if you did then you would've known how to calm your horse down!" The knight opens up his palm under the mount's mouth and displays a small treat. The tan horse snorts happily before eating it out of his hand, visibly much calmer now.

Daegon rolled his eyes as he pulled himself on top of the saddle. "Mi'lord, you should give her a name! They say that horses grow will fonder of you if you give them a name!" Sir Hanock said. The young lord though on it for a moment before smiling to himself.
"Eurydesis!" He exclaimed as he ran his hands through her soft mane. "Guess that makes two companions now..." Daegon said as he looked to the sky and saw a small figure flying towards them. It flew closer and closer, and as it got near, it could be made out as a Crow! Something was tired to its leg that caused it to dip between its wing-flaps. It eventually landed on Daegon's shoulder before giving a loud 'Caw!' directly into his ear.

"Hello again Floki! Oh, a letter?" Daegon said as he untied the note from around Floki's leg and unrolled it. "It's from Bellgaurd; the guards will let us in the gates upon arrival and we are to report directly to Isana Chiari or Rosaria Vogaul once we enter the city!" He said to Sir Hanock with a smile on his face. "They must have some work prepared for us, I haven't had a good fight in weeks!" Daegon says with an almost child-like giddiness in his voice. "Very good mi' lord! Then we will ride at once!" The knight nods towards the rest of the men before mounting his own horse. 'Crack' goes the reigns in Lord Daegon's hands as the horse gives a bellowing 'neigh' before starting forward. "Remember, stay out of the woods girls, there are worse fates than bandits if you venture too far." He says condescendingly as they ride past the two women. How dare he! Diana was a lady, a fully grown one too. While she may have the height of a child, she was no mere girl. Being the person she was, her pride was slighted upon the young man's glare, though she made sure to meet it with a look of equal intensity. Unlike the stranger, Diana doesn't glare (it causes wrinkles around the eyes) but if her eyes could shoot out the flames that flicker in amber irises, they very well be roasting the sir to a crisp.

Rude children should be taught a lesson and any traces of her previous "kind-hearted motive" was shattered. The air around her seemed to drop a few degrees in humidity, becoming dry and crackling against one's skin. Despite the cold, there was an invisible, calidity around Diana and as she directed that aura towards the men, the horses became skittish once more, shifting in steps and more than ready to leave. Before she could do any substantial harm, another person joined the small group. Again, it was one more unfamiliar face on an equine.

"Damn, are horses being bred like chickens now?" Diana wondered, pulling back to compose herself. Still, she felt unsatisfied. Her petty need for revenge had her flicking a flame towards that rude man's direction when his back was turn. The ends of his hair caught flame in a quick singe, perhaps burning the back of his neck. Better his neck than a giant patch of hair at the back of his head, she supposed.

"Hmph," Diana sniffed haughtily in the air, "Was that someone from House Payne? They're so rude!" she scowled, recognizing the banners down below. She did not care if she was speaking aloud, to two other strangers nonetheless. Diana was annoyed.

[/div][/div] [div class="Name"] Linota Mercer[/div]
With a huff under her breath, Linota watched as Daegon Payne made his way back to his horse, her brows knit together in an underlying frustration. The Lord of House Payne was nothing but an ignorant lad with nothing but his father's fame strapped to his back. It was more than slightly annoying, but as she watched the band of bought mercenaries marched onward towards Bellguard, where they would lie in wait of a war that wasn't coming. "Ignore them," The redhead spat with a roll of her doe eyes. Giving the blonde beside her a small nod and gripping her reins, the lady of the Mercer named pulled her blood bay steed to turn around, figuring that this had been enough excitement for one day. Payne mercenaries, random strangers coming out of the woods, it all seemed like exactly what her father warned her of. Though what cerulean eyes fell to next was even more terrifying than any of the above.

The black-haired man almost looked as though he was... scared.

"What in the name of the God's name do you think you're doing out here?" Linota's voice carried on the back of the thinning wind as her younger sister came into view, poorly seated on the bare back of a white mare that was immediately recognized as one of the older mounts in the Mercer cavalry. Eavan wore of mixture of excitement and stricken fear across her fair complexion, chocolate waves whipping through the breezes as they came. Nudging her heel against Maud's side, she brought the horse to a steady trot before halting him in front of the stolen mare. "You must have a death wish being sent to father as we speak, and this-" A sharp finger gestured towards the horse as Linota's face twisted into even more anger. "You have no idea how to control an animal of this caliber and neither do you have the right to!" And while yes, perhaps she was being somewhat harsh, it was true.

Much to her delight, Linota squinted to see one of the stable hands trotting up behind them, seated confidently atop a black stallion known as Dia, one of the breeder horses of the Mercer stables. The boy rode well, his heels pressed down, chest up and eyes locked on his target. If anything, it was refreshing to see that one of the men that handled the horses on foot knew how to handle them in the saddle. A smile set across her lips as she recognized him as Aire, shoulder settling from their previously angered state. "You have no clue how happy I am to see you," Linota sighed, folding her reins into one hand and using the other to twist a hand through her hair. Her gaze flicked to Eavan for one second, nodding at the horse before resting her gaze back to the brunette boy in front of her. "If you could please take her back to Lord Mercer and return both horses to the stables, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm making my way to the tavern in Newacre to meet with a breeder."

With that, the fiery redhead bid both individuals ado, a kind smile given to Aire while a pointed glare shot at Eavan. Her sister was careless and naive, too young and not skilled enough to be outside of the hold alone. It wasn't lost on Linota that all her sister wanted was adventure, but the right to freedom from Millhold was earned. And actions like this? They simply showed that the younger Mercer girl wasn't ready. Another sigh fell from cherried lips before Linota turned her mount towards Newacre and took off at a steady canter, a content smile gracing her lips as the air flowed against her cheeks. KILIAN SLOAN

Rays of unwanted sun found their way into Kilian's eyes as he rode his bucksin into Newacre, the sound of his horse's hoofs beating the ground becoming softer as he approached the gates. The city bustled about more busily than his previous destination of Ebonmere. What a grim town it was, too far from Millhold, to far from the Wilde, an oddity indeed. Kilian had been riding hard and long on his way to Newacre, hearing the town was quite the place for sellswords and brigands alike, perfect for him. He shielded his eyes from the bright sky as he looked into the streets of Newacre and to his hearts delight a friend stood to greet him. A smile crept across his face as Kilian saw the tavern sign, the name "The Black Dog" scratched sloppily across the rotting wood. Outside it had a horse rail, a good sign of a well stocked tavern. His horse trotted slowly up to the rail, instinctively stopping as it neared it. 'Nothing worth more than a well trained horse' He thought to himself as he dismounted and slung the reins around the rail.

Kilian sauntered into the pub as if he had visited before, though he couldn't have been more foreign. His chin was high, his hand rested on his blade's hilt, and his nose took in the familiar sent of spilt ale. The red-headed man caught the attention of a passing maid "A mug of your strongest ale and some brownbread" he ordered, slipping a few coins into her hand as he surveyed the room. He found himself a seat on a log a few feet away from a rowdy band of brigands, mucking about. Kilian couldn't help but laugh at the banter of the group as they argued over who among them lasted the longest with a woman. He found the sort of talk...juvenile in a sense, almost as juvenile as the men themselves. The men took notice of Kilians soft expressions of amusement, and with it offense. "Oy, we gon' have a problem?" Said the closest of them. "Oh no, please continue" He said with a smug grin as the maid placed a mug in front of him.

Kilian sipped his ale as he watched the crowd of the room interact, looking for any sign of one with a bit of gold weighing them down, or maybe even for one that could give him a bit of a thrill in a tussle, either would do.

[div class="Image"] [/div][/div] [div class="Name"] Isana Chiari of House Vogaul[/div]

[div class="Line"][/div] Something smacked into the window and startled Isana out of her thoughts. A crow squawked in pain as it tried to regain its balance, leaving some feathers stuck to the glass with its wild flapping, but finally righted itself and flew away. On a whim Isana unlatched the window and peeled off a dark feather from the pane. It was a nice looking tail feather, strong and sleek but a little bent from its traumatic removal. She smoothed out the fibers so they were neat and arranged properly again, and placed it in her pocket for safekeeping. She could smell the chill on the quiet wind wafting in through the window as she reattached the mechanism to shut it. Isana decided she needed a breath of fresh air.

She scooped up her snake from the writing desk and let him cling to her right forearm, then carefully rearranged the documents back to the positions her sister had left them in, and headed off to her quarters. Her shoes clicked in a solid and satisfying manner over stone and tile floors; sometimes she would make a point to avoid the carpets laid out through the halls to hear the sound of her own footsteps. Upon reaching her rooms she carefully set Elias down into his glass terrarium by the fireplace; he promptly squeezed his body beneath a small rock arch and curled into himself to rest. He'd be much happier here, where it was warm and comfortable. Satisfied that her pet was safe and content, she removed an autumnal cloak from a hook on the wall: a rich mahogany brown with bronze clasps. She draped it around herself to keep the chill out and descended to the estate grounds for a walk.

The atmosphere was as crisp as the dead leaves underfoot; grey skies hung over the dying gardens while a few small creatures scurried by to prepare for the winter ahead. Isana strolled at a leisurely pace, until a streak of black and scarlet crossed her periphery. Isana looked over her left shoulder to see an adolescent boy clad in the servant's garb of House Vogaul sprinting across the lawn. A summons for her father or siblings, perhaps? She made eye contact with the messenger at the same time he did to her, and relief flew across his face. He skidded to a halt to catch his breath a few feet away. She arched an eyebrow at this pause. Why stop here? The house was another dozen yards away.
"Me lady!" the boy blurted out before dropping into an awkward bow, still panting. Isana quickly composed her face into a neutral expression, careful to hide the confusion running through her mind. The princess often requested her company but always sent one of her handmaidens to deliver the message; this was clearly something far different. "His Highness the Prince requests your presence," the youth declared. Her eyes widened in mild shock. The messenger didn't seem to notice. "He says it's important," he continued, and handed her a folded note. Isana accepted the note, and breathed in and exhaled with a cough to briefly recenter herself. "Thank you, and if you see His Highness before I do send him my regards and inform him I will be on my way to meet him." The messenger nodded. "Yes me Lady!" he chirped, then scurried off.

As soon as the messenger disappeared in a black-and-scarlet blur, Isana let out the breath she didn't know she was holding. The Prince? What in the name of the gods did the crown prince want with her? What did she have that her siblings couldn't offer? The thoughts buzzed around her head as she made the walk to the Castle Vogaul seated at the top of the mountain Bellguard was built into. It seemed too private a matter to arrange for a carriage or horse, and the cool air whistling around her ears cleared her mind as she hiked up the incline. She reached the gates after a time, and approached the guardhouse.
"Here to see the Princess this afternoon, my lady?" the guard asked. "Not today. I have... other business to attend to." Isana showed him the written summons. The guard did a brief double-take as he glanced between the note signed by the prince and the figure standing in front of him. "Ah, well, I hope it goes favorably," he replied in a cautionary tone as he let her through the gates. A series of servants and twists and turns in the hallways later, and she found herself waiting for an audience with Lucal Vogaul, for better or for worse.

[/div][/div] [div class="Name"] Linota Mercer[/div]
The ride to Newacre was fairly easy after the incident with her sister, the cold nipping at the young Mercer girl's nose and highlighting it to a rosy red color. The same hue stained the fair skin of her cheeks, making her tug the emerald green riding cloak tighter around her petite figure. Maud was slowed to a steady walk as the pair entered the town of Newacre, Linota looked around at the state of it. Newacre was always somewhat in ruin, perfectly stationed between two of the more powerful holds of Auverand, and was mainly used as something of a half-way home for those making the trek from Millhold to The Wilde. It felt homey enough, not dressed in the finest banners or ruled by those with up turned noses, but welcoming with it's slightly distressed streets and dark, life-filled taverns. Though only one of the many ale-houses that made home here mattered to the redhead today.

The Black Dog wasn't hard to find, given it was right at the northern entrance of Newacre, the tavern rusted and rotted from years of life in the rainy plains, but nonetheless, a favorite among travelers. A smile glinted up into teal eyes as Linota urged her horse forward towards it, hopping off once she was close enough and tying him next to a built stallion that looked to be just as tired as Maud was. The horse looked like something that Linota would scout after, his shoulders broad and muscles built like bricks. Hopefully this was a horse of the breeder she came to see today, one that looked like it could be a serious threat on the battlefield.

Filled with hope, she pushed her way into the tavern, emerald hood dropping to reveal the river of tawny hair that flowed from atop her head. She stood out here, among the sellswords and mercenaries sat for their daily dose of ale and bread, getting drunk off the thought of women and glory, telling tale after tale of battles won and lost. The smell of working men, to put it lightly, filled the dimly lit tavern along with the sounds of chatter and song. A Lady of Millhold or not, this was a place where Linota felt confident in her conversational skills and abilities. As long as no one directly recognized her.

"A pint of ale please," Linota cooed to the woman across the counter, watching the usually riled barmaid soften at her tone, a smile peeling back chapped lips. She could feel the eyes on her across the bar, some darting in from the back of the barroom. It wasn't often a small young lady with sunset hair strolled into a place like this, however, she had business to attend to.

Cup of ale now safely in hand, the little Lady took a small swig, looking around the tavern for an empty seat. Success was found at a dingy table set behind a man whose fired hair almost matched hers, though it was dull and flat from what she could only guess was travel through the plains. He was chiseled, and seemed smug in his seat, as if he too was about to do a profitable business deal with a traveling man. Something about his demeanor peaked Linota's interest as teal eyes scanned him effortlessly, though not without a blush finding home on her face. In passing, she gave the redhead a smile, her cloak brushing his side as she moved past to sit at the table for two directly behind him, awaiting the breeder from Ebonmere and continuing to avoid the eyes of those in the tavern. KILIAN SLOAN

Loud shouts and shuffling feet overburdened Kilian’s ears, his bright hazel eyes darting around the room from one attention grabbing patron to another. Brownbread now filled his belly and ale relieved his parched lips. He had no true intention in Newacre, simply to find something, or perhaps someone, out of the ordinary. Maybe the gods, whoever or wherever they may be, found favor with Kilian in that moment for as he thought about his purpose in that tavern, the someone he had looked for walked in. The girl had hair kissed by fire, just as he did, waves of amber that lit up the bleak room. He had no doubt his was the only pair of eyes giving lead to the girl. She wasn’t entirely out of place, at least not for Newacre. She wasn’t dressed extravagantly, though her pockets no doubt had gold in it judging by the emerald riding cloak that embraced her. Kilian took a final sip of his ale as she left the counter and began to make her way past him.

The girl must have noticed him as he did her, as she gave him a soft and subtle smile as she walked past him. The air of her was sweet, no doubt perfumed, though muted by what must have been a long ride through the crisp cold air of the plains just north of Newacre. Her nose was tinted red in accent with her hair, everything about her from appearance to circumstance surprised him, and Kilian was not easily surprised. He allowed her a moment to settle in to her seat before he contemplated an approach, however his thought was interrupted by the unruly bunch beside him. “Oi miss!” One said as he tactlessly marched his way to her table “ain’t you a beaut” the broad brigand slurred through ale stained breath. Kilian rolled his eyes in disgust, though his spirit peaked in interest at the prospect of the coming event. “I hope that isn’t the best you got” Kilian said taking a bite of brownbread, staring off towards the maid counter, raising his mug in indication. “You got something else to say?” Said the man. Kilian finally looked to him, and a truly horrid sight he was. Dirty caked his knees and elbows, and his short hair was knotted and greasy. He doubted that this man had anything better than he had already given. “Well I did but looking at you I don’t think it worth my time” he said with a smirk, knowing the antagonizing nature of his statement. The man began to reach for the beaten sword at his hip “Why I ought to-“ Kilian swiftly drew his blade from his opposite him and balanced it in the air inches from the man’s neck. With this the tavern went silent and the entire entourage of barbaric men rose to their feet with swords drawn. “My friend, I do hope you’re better with that bit of steel there than you are with speech”. Pride and confidence filled his amber eyes, Kilian knew the answer.

All of the tavern’s patrons now stared at Kilian, no doubt branding him as a troublemaker. In truth, who was he to disagree? And seeing as he had in fact made trouble, he saw no harm in causing a bit more. “Tell me, you talk of lasting with a woman” Kilian rose slowly to his feet, brandishing a smaller dagger “how long will you last against me, do you think?” His blades glimmered in the light, his leather armor taught against his swift frame. He gaze shot from man to man, anticipating their attack, though he doubted they would do anything in truth. “I’d truly appreciate if you left the lady alone” he said towards the man standing between him and the fiery redhead seated, who he thought no doubt frightened. All of the men in the band looked around, they knew wether they won or not, they weren’t getting out of Newacre with blood on their hands, and they didn’t seem keen on loosing any of their own to put Kilian in shackles. Disgruntled the man between him and the girl holstered his sword, and with him the other placed their blades back in their scabbards. They muttered in frustration, shuffling out of the tavern as Kilian kept his fiery gaze glued to their backs, finally putting away his weapons as the bunch exited the tavern.

[/div][/div] [div class="Name"] Linota Mercer[/div]
A few eyes seemed to divert from her figure as Linota took one last look around the alehouse, the place beginning to fill with chatter once more as the shock of her presence seemed to subside. Though said normalcy didn't last long as a dirtied and worn brute decided to open his mouth. Cadet blue eyes lazily slugged their way up the man's figure, meeting his eyes first. It wasn't unusual for strange men to shout petty compliments in her direction, and it was no different from the sellsword before her. The lack of interest was painted clear as day on Linota's features, though something about the man's stature did make her uneasy, a rolling feeling churning knots into her stomach. However, before said feeling could last long, the lad with the apricot hair spoke from his position between the two. The tawny-haired girl raised an eyebrow at his words. "I hope that isn't the best you've got," It was challenging, and incredibly intimidating, as he had no knowledge of her, or the man in question.

It became increasingly clear that the brigand whose body swayed from the river of alcohol running through it was well aware of his public insult, the man's face twisting into unbridled anger. Petite hands clutched at the emerald riding cloak shielding her body as Linota looked between the two, her eyes wide but unwavering. The hazel eyed man was at his feet now, looking the other in the eyes. Something about his gaze was confident and mischievous, his composure contrasting against the mindless rage held by the heftier man. His seemed level and soft, almost melodic yet still frightening somehow. It was intriguing, and somewhat uncanny. It wasn't until a blade was drawn before her that breath seemed to get caught in her lungs.

Shock didn't last long on Linota's face as the leaner, leather armored man began running his insults, his tempered blade threatening the neck of the larger man who quickly decided he didn't feel in the mood to pick a fight. And though she tried to keep it in, a small laugh haphazardly fell from rose petal lips. "Thank you," She managed, looking up at her sienna-haired savior before glancing once at the door. Luckily enough, her eyes caught the barmaid's as well, who gave a gracious nod and went to work filling two horns of ale. "You really didn't have to, but I must say, it was quite the show." A gracious grin lit up the Mercer girl's features as she gestured for the stranger to have a seat, the breeder obviously late and, per her prior experience, possibly not willing to show at all. To her surprise, the man's pulling of his weapon in such an open place didn't come off as an act of idiocy, but one of status. He had proven his point to the band of nitwits that he was faster and far more clever, and it hadn't taken him much to do so.

The barmaid was quick to bring over two fresh pints of ale, setting them down and giving Linota a grin before slipping past the ginger boy to return to her bar. Leaning forward, she pushed a pint in his direction.
"I suppose it's only fair I give you my name for defending the honor of a lady," The sentence dripped with sarcasm as the thought of her being a lady bubbled in her head, rolling her eyes in a playful manner before returning to an airy, appreciative gaze.
