Pre-Requsite to All Augmentation:
The Neural Spike is small piece of bioplastic with one or more ruby chips embedded within, and is typically implanted at the base of the skull in order to directly interface with the brain stem. Some models have exposed caps above the skin, sometimes for quick maintenance or modification, and sometimes for decoration.
Basic Neural Spikes are typically bundled with other augs, their principal purpose being to provide the link between operator neural impulse and the augmentation. This is handled by a few simple spells woven into the spike allowing anyone to rapidly use, for example, a cybernetic limb as if they were born with it within a few days of practice.
The same spike can instead be equipped with a larger piece of ruby and suite of spells to provide the owner with a wireless Mindsea uplink and entopic overlay, allowing them to send and receive data - text messages, voice messages, phone calls, videocalls, or infosite packets. More complex versions allow for perceptual overlays for realtime navigational data, telemetry, vital signs, and even target designation and tactical analysis software.
CPD detectives are required to have a spike capable of data retrieval, communication, and local link. In this way, the detective can receive and update case files, communicate with their team, transmit their vitals to emergency services, access city maps and building plans, and use the CPD network when in range of a node.
You have two choices on this front - allow the CPD to pay for a mid-range spike from their supplier at Morgan Polytech, which can take your whole life to pay off (and may even be extracted if you live to retirement without paying for it), or spend your own salary on a model more to your liking.
Neural Spikes also require either hard carriers or soft carriers. Hard carriers are threads of enchanted wire, installed close to the bone, which link a spike to an augmentation. These are incredibly secure and relatively inexpensive, but it takes longer to recover from the surgery. Even cheaper, some gangs use tattoos as the carriers.
Soft carriers are ruby nodes that transmit signals between spike and aug, which can leave them vulnerable to hacking and outside interference.
Morgan Polytech R-900 series Spikes are secure and affordable, with a basic Mindsea access package and two law enforcement spell suites, with room for a further single civilian mod.
SPIKE UPGRADES
Civilian Options
Cognitive Overclocking - +1 Intellect
Linguistics Module - Activate to gain +1 die on Empathy rolls involving a language you do not natively speak
Optimized Search Engine - Bonus dice to Academics rolls
Nav Module - Realtime GPS and maps to stop you getting lost
Vehicular Interface - Direct link to a chosen vehicle, allowing it to be piloted as if an extension of your body.
Memory Expansion - Store memories with perfect clarity.
Social Enhancement Suite - Use Intellect in place of Bearing or Guile.
Military and Law Enforcement
TacOps - CSI Module: Provides a scene photography and evidence tagging system across a shared net.
TacOps - Conflict Module: Provides vitals, positioning, and target flagging for teams to coordinate an arrest or gunfight.
TacOps - Breach Module: Used by riot teams during breach and clear.
Oracle Lie Detector: Somewhat unreliable barely-out-of-beta social enhancement system intended to increase officer efficacy during interrogation.
HackMaster R9K: A cyberespionage suite with a selection of preconfigured spells for breaching systems.
Manticore: A cyberespionage countermeasure that induces extreme nausea in would-be hackers.
Limb Augmentations
Any standard cybernetic limb is typically slightly more durable than a biological one, but has a harder limit on exertion. If your cyberarm lifts eight kilos, it lifts eight kilos - anything more and you'll need to put your back into it.
Further advantages are available based on manufacturer, since each company preferentially hires or was founded by particular Magi and so pursue some predictable solutions.
Guardian made augs tend to be simple, sturdy, efficient designs in a variety of materials with a particular preference for bronze. While that ought to be too fragile for some, Guardians have an easy time magically fortifying it on a par with steel.
Conflagrant made augs are usually mostly brass and gold over a titanium frame, with an extremely high heat tolerance (and sometimes radiate a little heat). Typically fitted with offensive features such as inbuilt flamethrowers or flamecasters, you rarely see these in civilian usage.
