JERICHO MACE

sweat more in practice, bleed less in war.

Name |
Jericho Mace

Age |
17 ---> (post-training) 20

Gender |
Male

Origin |
Trost

Birthday |
November 11th

Affiliations |
Gangster

Personality
Raised on a diet of bruised cheeks and bloody knuckles, it comes as no surprise to say that Jericho is rough around the edges. More often than not, his mouth crosses the finish line while his mind is still two blocks back. He's quite straightforward and brutally honest, which means that you can always count on him to say what he means, and mean what he says. There's this dangerous game he plays between admirable boldness and plain stupidity, though it's safe to say that most of the time, it's more of a combo. With such devilish charisma and mischief coursing through his veins, Jericho is almost never tedious to be around, with a sarcastic remark or a teasing jab at the ready to dish out. But most of all, Jericho is shaped by his extremes; quick to love as he is quick to hate; quick to anger just as he is quick to forget (though forgiveness is another matter entirely). His arrogance often overlaps with his rugged street-smarts, fueling him with a desire to never back down, and to fight for the freedom and the independence of humanity that he values so much for himself.

Short Backstory
Jericho's life was no pretty picture. His pops had a habit of using his fists instead of his words, and money slipped away like quicksand, prioritizing booze and the gamblers' table rather than feeding and clothing a son. So it was no surprise that a young Jericho would find comfort in the streets of Trost to fend for himself and escape the hell that was his home, joining up with fellow delinquents and dabbling in crime. As the years went by, the severity of laws broken grew in tandem with Jericho, who would often find himself being shoved out of the bailer's office by his grim-faced, senior-ranking Military Police officer of a father.
It was around this time that Jericho faced pressure to conform to his father's standards and pick a respectable career path, which to his father meant the military, where his son's spirit would finally be broken. To Jericho, this meant he would suffer under the boot of his father once more, just like he had as a child, and worst of all, he would lose any hope of independence. His father was hellbent on breaking his son, like a horsemaster would a wild stallion. What was worse however, was that it was a slew of bad timing - all Jericho needed was one big hit, one last big heist, and he would have enough to escape his father, and migrate closer to his true element: the criminal underworld of Wall Sina.
And that was exactly what his father was counting on.

The night before the heist, Jericho was confronted by his father, who, in order to catch his attention, told him that he already had his son's accomplices lined up for arrest. "You'll either obey me," Jericho was told. "Or you will suffer at the hands of the system."
And the system, it turned out, would show no mercy. Crimes from months, even years ago that Jericho had mistakenly assumed were thrown under the rug suddenly reared their ugly faces again, ready to send him down to the pits of prison and labor, where a hefty eight-year sentence awaited him.
The youth was cornered. His father's oppressive will bore down on him, and his own actions pressured him from the sides. The only way out was through the cracks, triggered by the monumental fall of Wall Maria.
So, in a final bid to preserve any sliver of independence and escape the bigger devil, as well as spite his father at his own game, Jericho found himself joining up his father's most hated division: the Scouts.

Likes |
an adrenaline-charged challenge, keeping himself fit, good fights (that he may or may not have helped instigate), the element of surprise, a job done well and efficiently, the thrill of danger, loosening up, wisecracking, inside jokes, taking the piss out of people

Dislikes |
killjoys, hypocrites, holier-than-thou types, tediousness, sitting still, mind games, manipulation, Titans, his father

Quirk |
When he's preparing himself for a challenge, whether it be a good one or bad, he blows a trademark piece of hair away before executing. In the same vein, he has a habit of biting on the inner of his cheek when he's thinking hard, or cracks his knuckles when he's agitated or nervous.

    MISCELLANEOUS
Brew the tempest in a teapot; create a homicidal storm and condition it to a body. Notations of such specific meteorological characteristics belong to Ramiel Diakos. They say you know a man best by his eyes, and if there is one way to judge Ramiel’s character: study his eyes. Ordinarily, his optics are made of gradients of brown, but when they ambush the sun, they are equally blinding as the temporal strike of lightning. Duty bound, competitive, and jaundiced: that is the native temper to both the free-hurtling light of raging storms and Ramiel’s oculuses. As for the rest of his face, it’s plain and simple with a nose that sits on a high bridge and lips that are thin. Easy and soft features do not carry for the rest of his body. He’s not tall nor short, nor outwardly taut. Assumptions as these would make him an easy target, but beneath his attire are carved out pectorals with lean abdominals. He’s agile and flexible like clouds that change shape. Storm-chasing, are you?
    PERSONALITY
Greetings again. Your thoughts, your sorrows, and your erratic emotional way of thinking remain trapped within a 85cm radius.

Black water rafting after taking tylenol is one answer. The other answer would be that Ramiel Diakos, in theory, is made of mixed metaphors. He can be your friend and your enemy. You can make him guilty or innocent, hero or villain, and decide for yourself whether he’s worth heaven or hell. There’s only one ideal that stays fixed to Ramiel Diakos and that is his loyalty. This trait of his is brutally immovable, and one that he’s certain to take to his grave. Dysfunctionally, Ramiel Diakos will wipe away morality and ethics completely when it comes to his promises. He’ll be willing to turn up on any one-way street and forsake even his own credentials to his name and reputation if it means that he’s abiding by the contract between him and the Hildebrand bloodline.

For an aside, don’t mistake Ramiel Diakos to be quiet, antagonistic, and cynical. This behavior is only directed towards the Hildebrand girl he works for, and even then, he only shows her this cold shoulder outside of work hours(9am to 9pm). Primarily, Ramiel Diakos is loud, sarcastic, and has opinions for the advancements of the world. He’s the master of trial and error and refuses to fail. In his mind, everything is a matter of time. What if that game was longer? What if that sparring match was longer? He’s the type of boy who will sit hours to prove theorems to be true and find logic in strategies. To him, there is no gain with no loss, and no loss without gain. Perhaps this makes his character the strongest: he doesn’t let loss taunt him. He goes to taunt it.

VIRTUES. Dignified, direct, honorable, trusting, impressive, independent, innovative

VICES. Argumentative, uncharitable, narrow-minded, moody, miserable

    MBTI. ESTJ
ALIGNMENT. Divided; biased for the safety of Elyse

"May 'ave been born a worm, but that doesn't mean I gotta die like one."

Name: Bianca Hatton ((Actual name is Bee. This crappy name is explained in the backstory))

Age: 15 (younger)

Gender: Female

Origin: The Underground

Birthday: November 1st

Affiliations: N/A

Hair Color:
Dirty Blonde

Eye Color:
Maroon Brown

Height:
5'0

Weight:
110 lbs.

Complexion:
Pale

Body Composition:
Toned

Personality: "Punk" would be the best word to describe Bianca. She has a tough exterior and a resting bitch face because of her years within the Underground. All she knows is that she cannot be seen as weak or she will be taken advantage of. Bianca's toughness also spreads to her words, which she will not hesitate to spit with venom if she feels threatened or looked down on. She also lacks morals thanks to living like a savage for most of her life. Though Bianca does not come off as friendly, she's actually pretty nice once she feels the other person is of no threat to her or her brother and is really easy to please. A good hot potato can usually calm her down.

Short Backstory: Jewel and Bee were both born as fraternal twins to a single mother who died during childbirth due to complications, forcing their father to cut her open to get the babies out safely. However, because of the depression of losing the only joy he had in the Underground and the stress of raising two babies he didn't even want, Jewel's and Bee's father left them with the neighbors "for only an hour" only to be found dead of self made causes. The neighbors raised them as much as they could, despite not knowing a thing about the children. They decided to name the boy "Jewel" because of his shining beauty, and "Bee" after a beetle because of how tough she was. When Jewel and Bee were old enough, it was decided that there simply wasn't enough food to keep all of them and the siblings would have to go elsewhere.

Now on the street, Jewel and Bee were forced to beg for morsels, hunt, steal, and eat whatever bugs and flowers they found. When they were caught, they were beaten, which only made them learn to be sneakier, faster, and to fight back. They became stronger and better at what they did. Jewel eventually learned that he could get much more out of unsuspecting men by taking advantage of his appearance and charming them. When caught, he would be beaten, but that only taught him to do better.

They were eventually smuggled out by a man who was enlisted and took a year to train and help integrate the twins into society. Jewel's revised name became Julian Hatton, and Bee's revised name became Bianca Hatton.

Quirk: If Bianca sees "good eating" (bugs, plants, etc) she will take it and eat it when no one is looking.

Other: Bianca has never had a crush become a romance because they would fall in love with her brother instead. She feels a bit of joy whenever she has to tell them that her "sister" is actually her brother.

"Some folks don't know just how good they have it. Hell, you'd be surprised at how much they're willin' to share if a pretty lady flirts enough."

Name: Julian "Juli" Hatton ((Actual name is Jewel. Crappy name explained in the backstory))

Age: 15 (Older)

Gender: Male

Origin: The Underground

Birthday: November 1st

Affiliations: N/A

Hair Color:
Dirty Blonde

Eye Color:
Hazel

Height:
5'6

Weight:
145 lbs.

Complexion:
Pale

Body Composition:
Toned

Personality: Julian is a deceitful, cunning man able to read other people like a book after spending years manipulating others just so he and his sister didn't starve to death. He has little to no morals at this point, having witnessed the worst of the worst growing up alongside his sister. However, despite his upbringing Julian's heart is surprisingly in the right place. Julian is rather kind and is curious about this new world he resides in. He has trust issues and is, in a way, territorial, but he's working on those two things. Though he's integrated with society, his habits of the Underground still linger.

Quirk: Julian always looks for every exit when he enters a place or an area. This is a survival tactic he learned to keep him from getting stuck in a tight spot.

Height:
5'10

Hair Color:
Dark brown

Eye Color:
Amber

Body Composition:
Muscular / "Dad Body"

Personality:

It is no secret that Hillel gives the Survey Corps a bad name; now a shell of his former reputation as the model soldier, he has fallen quite far from those graces. Though he is a natural leader, he now wears what little soul remains as selfish pride. He often seeks direct combat with Titans as the first answer to problems, and is prone to lone wolf tendencies when he sees a good opportunity to 'reap'. This reckless abandon can, and has, endangered many of the Survey Corps' members and operations, and has nearly gotten him killed on several occasions, which is something that doesn't seem to concern him all too greatly; this behavior is exacerbated by his addiction to alcohol, which has led to the infamous twist of his publically bestowed title.
In the midst of his responsibilities, Hillel is usually a reticent and uncompromising soldier who operates without any questions asked. During the Survey Corps' downtime, he can be seen as a gregarious and fun-loving man who is the stark opposite of his military persona. He makes light of humanity's plight and the ongoing situation, often cracking the serious atmosphere by cracking jokes or the like with some booze. Some may say that he lost sight of the true ideals tied to the wings of freedom; in reality, he is a broken man who relives a life full of regrets every time that sleep claims him. He yearns for the return of the connection that was once shared with loved ones that he will never have again, futily trying to recreate this spark by sharing a bed with many women. He wields alcohol as the weapon to drown away his lamentation, and is known to turn despondent or violent when intoxicated in some instances.
Despite this want for sentiment, Hillel feels compelled to keep himself from others in fear of growing attachments because he is terrified of suffering the same pain once again.

Backstory:
The man infamously known as Humanity's Greatest Drunkard was born into a humble lifestyle on a homestead in Dauper, a village situated in a mountainous forest region south of Wall Rose that is secluded from ordinary society. Hillel Ackerman, affectionately referred to as Gil by personal acquaintances, is the first son among four total children (as of his knowledge); his father, Eden Ackerman, supervised the village's hunting packs, while his mother, Anise Ackerman (née Theroe), bred and cared for the community's horses. From an early age, the boy steadily learned the ropes of Dauper's self-sufficient lifestyle, taught first-hand by his father and managing to secure his first game at the age of seven. As their community was sheltered from everything else, his imagination ran wild as he wanted to see the world outside of their forest. This often put him at odds with his family and the other inhabitants of Dauper, who preferred their isolationist approach to life. He felt that spending his entire life in Dauper without ever venturing anywhere would be a lifetime wasted, and after a confrontation with his parents, he ran away from home at the age of sixteen.
Without any conventional skills or knowledge in a relevant trade to possibly keep himself afloat in civilian life, Hillel chose to enlist in the military, which is where he would first learn about the Walls and the Titans that kept humanity inside. Adjusting to the sudden shift in the dynamics from civilian to soldier was rough; he was ridiculed for his unorthodox mannerisms and his unusual accent by all of the other recruits except for one by the name of Takase Ii, who was also of demeaning behavior because of her Asian heritage. Their similarities ended there, for she would usually give him the cold shoulder upon further interaction. They would share a half-friendly rivalry throughout their years as trainees, trading the top position of the class on several occasions until it was Takase who ultimately placed first among the graduates with him losing out at second. She opted to join the Garrison, while he chose to join the Survey Corps with his idealistic dream in mind.
Of course, reality would set in rather shortly during and after Hillel's first expedition beyond the Walls in the summer of 836, which culled the Survey Corps' ranks by ninety-percent. When the legion passed through Shiganshina District in the aftermath, it was here that he briefly reconnected with Takase since their graduation in the previous year. Seeing that he was visibly shaken after every subsequent venture beyond the realms of humanity, she steadily became more open with him throughout their fleeting interactions whenever the Survey Corps experienced a bout of downtime in their operations. As the years drew on and he mounted up experience through survival, their friendship blossomed into love, and they became seriously involved in 840. A year later, after becoming the Squad Leader of the 3rd Squad, Takase accepted his marriage proposal, and the newly-weds purchased a home for themselves in the district. Though his involvement with the Survey Corps meant that it only took one moment to leave her a widow, he promised that he would always come to see her after each expedition before passing through the inner gate of Shiganshina.
Life was as good as can be for Hillel; despite the Survey Corps' repeated failures, he continued to live on as one of its veteran members, his skillset in dispatching Titans and knowing what exactly had to be done at the exact moment earned him the moniker of Humanity's Strongest Soldier. Together, he and Takase would have a son named Emil Ackerman, with the latter parent granted leave to raise their child while the former remained in active duty. In 843, he was personally chosen by Commander Tyrell to lead the newly-formed Special Operations Squad before the latter's abrupt resignation, and while his responsibilites were only piling up like the numbers of their deceased, he was still able to make time for his family in between each expedition with advance permission. One particular expedition in 845 was to be one of the Survey Corps' largest scale efforts in a long time in terms of resources and manpower invested, but besides the fact, it seemed like any ordinary morning for the wings of freedom as they set off into unknown lands once again.
Though Hillel had long grown accustomed to the widespread casualties that their force suffered in each expedition, there was one individual whose death invoked great emotion from him; the death of the 1st Squad Leader from his early years, one of the few comrades who'd always been with him since his very start in the Survey Corps, and a close friend to Takase. When the broken legion returned to Shiganshina from yet another failed expedition, Hillel couldn't bring himself to bear the news to his wife and the four-year-old Emil, passing through the district without visiting his family. Fate showed its cruel fangs when the Fall of Wall Maria occurred later that afternoon from the actions of the Colossal and Armored Titans, and the inhabitants of Shiganshina District were massacred; among the killed were his wife and child, whom he had refused to see before the event.
His reputation as a soldier and leader rapidly deteriorated as he actively attempted to shirk his responsibilities wherever possible, and combined with the recent events, the Survey Corps fell into a period of disarray that wasn't helped by his discovery of alcohol as solace. Hillel seemingly placed little faith in the wings of freedom as he openly disrespected protocol with his public intoxication, even during the following expeditions to secure a route to the fallen Wall Maria. Over the two years under (13th Commander Name Here), his actions and disregard culminated in the dissolution of the Special Operations Squad after his reckless behavior led to their deaths when they tried to save him during an expedition in 847. He was demoted to his original ranking of 1st Squad Adjutant, and the public twisted his original moniker, now dubbing him as Humanity's Greatest Drunkard.

“If we put our trust in each other and work together, then maybe we’ll make it back together.”

Name:
August Ackerman

Nicknames:
Auggie [his little brother]

Age:
16-years-old

Gender:
Male

Origin:
Utopia District, Wall Rose

Birthday:
August 1

Affiliations:
104th Training Corps (Current)

Appearance Details:
Height:
5ft 8in (roughly 172.72cm)

Weight:
173 lbs (roughly 78.47kg)

Hair Color:
Black

Eye Color:
Bluish Gray

Clothing & Body Type:
When not in uniform, August can typically be found in baggier clothes that often appear a little more worn than anything else. In addition to the added benefit of being comfortable, they help to conceal his physique, to an extent. Many often believe him to be a tad bit on the scrawnier side when, in fact, he boasts a well-toned, lean, and muscular build. Those who choose to challenge him without knowledge of this are generally caught unawares due to this. He is, afterall, a well built young man.

Personality:
Ever cool headed and kind, there is very little that can get to August. Many who know him consider him the model of serenity, patience, and reliability. After all, the young man did take up the role of a caregiver for a time. He approaches everything in his daily life with an air of confidence about him. He prefers to avoid stressing details out of his control especially when there is work to be done. Oftentimes, August will laugh or even shrug off insults, disrespect, and many other manner of belittling toward himself. He simply doesn’t think it’s worth letting get under his skin, especially when he can dish it back out and usually find a more permanent place in the mind of the offender.
This doesn’t mean August is without his own troubles though; and it certainly doesn’t mean he won’t fight back if provoked. He simply tends to put the needs of others before his own in most cases, as is his nature. And, of course, it is possible to get under his skin; his tolerance is just incredibly high. However, there are certain triggers that will get a rise out of him quicker than others. Some of these triggers include: threatening or insulting his family or others close to him; behaving in a manner he believes is unacceptable; or refusing to heed his warnings (if he gets to that point). Push him to his boiling point and you're unlikely to escape unscathed.
In spite of all this, many who spend time with August come to know that he becomes almost a different person in battle. It is almost as though a flip is switched. Training, skirmishes, fights, and beyond see him behaving in a much more ruthless manner. He becomes lost in the thrill of battle, relishing overcoming the obstacles that litter his path. And yet, his allies will know that they can trust him to act as both spear and shield in the wake of danger. Should they choose to trust him, he will trust them and maybe, if they’re lucky, they’ll all return home every time. After all, for him, simply giving in to death’s grasp is not an option.

Short Backstory:
When hearing a name like "Utopia" anyone would expect fine living, collaboration, good people, and many other manner of wondrous things. In truth, to many Utopia was just that. They lived happily and without care. These were those who managed to step over others in order to better their lives. August's parents weren't such people. Try as they might, they never managed to do well enough to do much more than survive.

The colder climate of the Utopia District made farming hard. Snow rarely stuck, but it came frequently enough to be a nuisance to many. The people adapted though. As an area prone to temperature drops and late night freezes, agriculture was a very difficult practice to maintain. So, the Utopia District made its mark primarily as an industrial center for manufacturing. Working in factoring was a guaranteed living, though you wouldn't do very well unless you managed to climb the ranks. These positions, however, were left largely to those with strong connections, noble blood, etc.

August's father, Kieran Verstekt was a man who prided himself on working hard and providing the best life he could for his family. His mother, Edrisa Ackerman, made house and home and watched their children. THey'd fallen in love many years prior. Their first son, August, was named for the month he was born. His mother always looked at him with such love and wonder.

"It was a beautiful warm day," she would say.

August always loved hearing his mother speak. She was kind and so loving. He was happier when he was 5-years old and gifted a younger brother. Misha's birth, however, wasn't as picturesque as his own though. His father was forced to work. If not for the kindness of their neighbor, Mrs. Klein, they might have had much more trouble.

Still, they were happy for a time. That is, until Kieran began spending more and more time away from home. He was working hard, but Edrisa worried. It was too much. THey had more mouths to feed though. It was clear that the stress was getting to their loving father.

One night, his father came home in a drunken stupor. August had been asleep, but was awoken by a slamming door. 8-years-old at the time, he quietly crawled out of the bed he shared with little Misha. That boy could sleep through anything. He moved softly to the door of his room. He could hear shouts. His father was drunk, his mother crying. His father screamed about all the things he'd given up to be with her. He'd come from "noble" blood, after all (a fact August only knew because of the fairy tale-like story his mother and father told him and Misha of how they met).

He'd given up a comfortable life! He'd given up money, a large home, never having to do as much of the menial labor as he was doing now.

A creaky floorboard put had given away their little eavesdropper. Things fell silent. Kieran withdrew to his and Edrisa's room. Edrisa entered August's room to check on him and Misha. August pretended to sleep. He couldn't look at his father the same after that. More often he'd come home reeking of liquor. His mother was at a loss. Things weren't getting worse, but they certainly weren't getting better.

Then, one day, all of that changed. August was 11-years-old at the time; Misha was 6. They were playing in the kitchen while Edrisa tried to decide what to make them for dinner. There wasn't much in the house. Kieran would be home any moment and there was nothing prepared. Except, he didn't come home. They waited, but he didn't come back. One day passed, then two, and three.

Finally, there was a knock at their door. When Edrisa opened, she was pushed aside, knocked over by the door. Two men entered, looking for Kieran. Edrisa tried to tell them that he hadn't been home, but they wouldn't listen. One of the men slapped her. Kieran had wronged a few people and then had just up and disappeared. They were demanding to know where he was. August rushed one of the men. An unexpected punch to the gut made the man cough, but it didn't hurt him much. He simply laughed and lifted August off the ground.

"You're a wild one," he barked as August struggled in his hold, feet dangling off the ground. "Maybe we oughta take you and put ya to work." The man chuckled and pulled out a knight, holding it to August's cheek. "Or we could just drag ya through the streets. Might make daddy crawl outta the woodwork."

Edrisa pleaded for them to stop, but the other man grabbed her by the hair. He told her to shut her damn mouth or he'd do it for her. She was scared. Misha was crying, scared and confused about what was going on. The man holding August growled, telling the other to shut the damn kid up.

Edrisa tried to stop him, but he simply kicked her away. Misha ran to his and August's room, but the man followed. August struggled more. Part of him wanted to call for help, but they had neighbors, neighbors like Mrs. Klein. Sure she or her husband could see something was wrong. Even if not them, surely others could tell what was going on. But nobody came.

August grit his teeth. He didn't know what to do. Time seemed to slow down. Suddenly, everything became muffled. The pleas of his mother, barking orders of the man who was tightening his hold to restrain August, and the manic laughter of the man following after Misha all became so distant. Only one thing reached his ears.

"Help me!" Misha's voice rang out.

Over and over the terrified cry of his brother repeated in his mind. August's breath became ragged. The man holding him looked down. "Givin up already runt?" he asked with a small chuckle. He shook his head. "Shame." His grip barely loosened. He didn't seem to want to take the chance, but it was still enough. August's teeth sunk into the man's arm, drawing blood. The man yelped, dropping August and his knife.

Cold eyes hone in on the man as August turned and swung, slamming a powerful fist into the man's abdomen. Winded and shocked at the power of this child he hunched over, coughing out a cry for help. August didn't waste time. He could hear the hurried footsteps of the other man. He didn't have long. He slammed his forehead into this one's nose and tackled him down. Stone like fists barreled down from August as he straddled the man.

The man was a sputtering mess before his friend could truly process the information. "You little bastard!" The other screeched as he charged August. The one on the ground was incapacitated. He would choke on his own blood without medical attention. The other was frantic. He lunged at August, but it was a mistake. The first man had dropped his knife. All August needed to do was pick it up and use the man's own weight and momentum against him. Blood splattered across the floor and August.

The man still struggled as August pulled the knife from his gut and stabbed it back in. The man yelped, and tried to move, but August followed. They rolled and tumbled as August continued to stab him over and over and over until finally the man stopped moving. August was a mess of blood, breathing heavily. His body shook as he looked down at the man who'd lost too much blood and the other who'd choked on his own.

Suddenly, the severity of the situation had become all too real. He dropped the knife. Edrisa had made her way to Misha, making sure he was okay, but as she looked on in horror at the sight before her, she couldn't help but cry. In just three short days her life had been flipped on its head. No... maybe this had been a long time coming... hadn't it?

Edrisa was at a loss. She didn't know what to do. She was scared, confused, and hurt. As the adrenaline began to wear off, August could feel himself begin to break down. He didn't know exactly how he'd known what to do. Hell, he'd never been in a fight before, but somehow... he knew. Tears streamed down his cheeks, and perhaps that was what snapped Edrisa out of her stupor. She clutched her boys tightly. Somehow everything would be okay. Somehow.

Edrisa repeated this over and over until finally there was a gasp. Mr. Klein stood at the door. He was sweating and out of breath, adorning in his military uniform. He'd been away. He'd been shocked though to find his wife cowering at home, unsure of what to do. Of course, he had questions, none that could easily be answered. He helped August while Edrisa tended to Misha. Though she'd hugged August, try as she might, she just couldn't look at her son the same.

Though questions about Kieran still came up, mostly from Misha, it soon became clear that he'd abandoned them. Edrisa tried to remain strong, but she quickly fell to the bottle herself. Though she had her moments, her responsibilities as a parent quickly fell by the wayside. She was drunk all the time. August found himself assuming the role of caregiver for Misha, making sure he was fed, clean, and as happy as could be. Mrs. Klein helped, often bringing food when she could. She tried to make sure the children studied as well, and while August did as much as he could, his time became more limited when he began doing odd jobs to help support his mother and Misha.

From working in the factories to helping neighbors with chores and even running around in mills, August did anything and everything. It wasn't uncommon for him to get stiffed or get into the occasional scrap, but he managed. It would have been easy to lose himself, fall into a looming depression or grow colder, but he couldn't. Whenever things began to feel like too much, he remembered Misha. He found that if he could keep calm, cool under pressure, and keep going for him, it wasn’t as hard.

Besides, every day he came home and saw the help his mother needed or, more importantly, the happy look on Misha's face. Everything could melt away if only for a moment. He wanted to be a good role model for his little brother. He wanted to be better for him. And he knew that there were other people that might need that too.

At 15, August began to ask Mr. Klein for help. They were already doing so much for him and his family, but he needed more. He wanted to join the military. It would surely produce more for his family and he could find a way to feed this hunger for something more deep within himself. Misha was getting old enough to watch himself a little better. August and Mrs. Klein had taught him some things. His mom was generally useless, but even a broken clock could give the right time twice a day. So, it wasn't that bad.

With help from Mr. Klein, he began working to get himself fit and ready. Some things came naturally, but he didn't just want to do well. He wanted to excel. After about a year or so of learning and training from the Kleins, August enlisted. Perhaps, if he's lucky, he'll manage to make some strong connections, good friends, and build a better life for his younger brother.
TL; DR - August was born to Kieran Verstekt and Edrisa Ackerman in the Utopia District of Wall Maria. Kieran was a former “nobleman” and came from a well off background, but gave that up to live with Edrisa. He began working in the factories of the Utopia District, because it is more industrial than agricultural, in order to provide for her and himself. They had a child, August. For a while they were happy, even though there was another mouth to feed. Then, they had another child, Misha. Things got tougher still. Kieran wasn’t moving up in the industry and he was having to work more.
Kieran started drinking, getting angry, and complaining about his life. Eventually, he got in some trouble with some people and just left. Where is he? No idea. The people in question came looking and found a wife and two kids. Things got rough. August “awakened” when his little brother was in danger and fought back hard. He took down the first man, using shock and confusion to his advantage. He took down the second using a knife and a little luck. A bloody mess, he and his mother tried to explain things when one of his neighbor’s, a military man, came to see what was wrong.
Broken and hurt, Edrisa took to the bottle. August picked up the slack down everything he could to manage and help Misha grow up as happily as possible. Luckily, their neighbors were helpful. Course, it didn’t feel like enough. So, he asked Mr. Klein, the neighbor in question to help him prepare for and eventually enlist in the military. What branch will he join? No idea. He didn’t do all that much research. Mr. Klein has suggested Military Police, but who knows. What lies in store for August as a cadet in the 104th training corps?

  • August has a small habit of cuddling up to anyone sleeping within close enough proximity to him. He’ll simply pull them closer in his sleep if they are within reach. It means nothing. It is simply a habit. Though he’s unlikely to explain that unless asked or it leads to a “troublesome” situation.
  • Whenever August begins to think or is having trouble deciding on something, he sticks the very tip of his thumb in his mouth and gently bites on it.
  • When eating crackers, cookies, or biscuits, etc. August will always break or rip a piece in half, eat one side first, and then the other.

Other:
  • August hates worms and finds them to be exceedingly disgusting. If he sees one he will use the nearest object at his disposal to eliminate it. If he finds one inside, he will terminate its existence, but he will also spend however long he feels is necessary to clean the “infected” area.

Personality:
Quiet serenity. A personage that doesn't level much of an impression. While her words are soft-spoken and tend to not mean much, the actions of Pia Nacht are quite powerful and filled with more vigor than one would expect from such a seemingly cold and distant individual. Pia comes from a noble background, which you'd only know if you pieced it together yourself or someone told you, but it does show. All her mannerisms are filled with poise and etiquette. It was ingrained into her from the day she was born to the day she ran. A couple of years of boot camp and living your life on the wire couldn't drown that out. She is a kind individual but the likelihood of one encountering that side of her corresponds to the number counted on her hands of the friends she keeps in this world. The last time she tried to help a stranger they got scared by her attempt at a comforting smile and ran terrified.

The walls she has built up in her own heart and mind are nearly impossible to scale or breakthrough. But if you get a peek through whether it's because she grew close to you or her actions showcased them then what you'd find is a woman full of passion to chase after her dreams along with those precious few she holds deep within her heart.

Backstory:
The world was dark and quiet. Peacefully the wind rolled by gently blowing by the buildings in the Yarckel District. The only sound that threatened to waken the night came from the home of a noble family by the name of Nacht as their newest daughter was brought into the world crying to all who would listen. As if knowing her life wouldn't exactly be easy the night didn't respond. To better describe her life a preamble describing her family is required. The Nacht family is well-known within Wall Sina and its districts. The reason? For many generations, the members of this family were gifted musicians who performed for the elites of the last remnants of humanity. It was even a precedent that the oldest son had to marry a skilled musician while the other children were prodded into this direction. From the moment they could begin, the family would hire a tutor just for them to train them as musicians. This was the environment Pia grew in. When she was three it was decided for her that she would learn to play the piano.

However, the thing which got in the way of her family's plans was that the girl was a sickly child. Many days and nights wasted laying sick in bed caused her to not be able to practice as often as they liked. Because of this, anytime she wasn't ill she was practicing. This partially balanced out so that she could train as much as her siblings. She was never allowed to leave her house unless accompanied by her parents or tutor, and every day she solemnly watched from her window as her siblings walked to school or played with their friends in the garden or in the halls of their home. No, she had to make up for lost time which she supposedly wasted lying in bed ill. All in all, she ended up practicing much more than her brothers and sisters. When she should have been resting, the young Pia would pretend she was fine and practice hoping one day her parents would allow her to go outside. She would pour her heart and soul into the instrument until she couldn't handle it anymore and pass out from exhaustion.

Luckily for her, she began to get much better as she grew. Unfortunately, her tutor, who was not good enough to be a proper musician, desired fame no matter the cost and influenced Pia's parents to keep the same schedule for Pia that had been set before. As she got better the sessions increased in time and so did the strictness of her teachings. Overtime Pia lost herself completely in her learning. When a normal child should have been playing games with friends or bugging their siblings on a daily, Pia would sit at a piano. Playing endlessly or until it was time to learn something else. Whether it be normal teachings or that of etiquette.

At some point during her fifth year of life, her parents happened to hear her playing and were blown away. She was even better than her Aunt who had been playing the piano for 25 years. They felt they had a prodigy on their hands. Maybe with her skills, the Nacht family would be able to relocate to the capital and play directly for the king himself. Then without much input from Pia, she soon found herself in a grand theater alone on a stage with a piano. The terror and anxiety were clear on the little girl, but she tried to play anyway. It did not go over well and that night she was punished for embarrassing her family. From that day on it was a blurry loop. Practice, eat, sleep, and the occasional performance. When she did well she was praised. When she did bad she was punished. Despite this change, she was still never allowed to be a proper child. She felt trapped. Almost like an animal trained to do tricks. She had no friends. She had no desires. She just played the piano. It stayed this way until a few years later when one of her younger siblings had stumbled into her room.

She was confused. Pia was basically the outcast of her family. She knew all their names and they hers. But she didn't know, well them. She sat up in her bed watching as her younger sister blinked her eyes as if confused. Pia quietly watched as the young girl walked towards her bed. Then she saw as her sister reached out for Pia causing her to recoil in fear. Physical contact was terrifying to her. But her sister held out her hand and waited. Letting the fear subside, Pia soon took her hand only to be ripped out of bed and ran through the halls of their home. The two bolted through the house faster than Pia had ever moved before. They were nearing a door when Pia stopped dead in her tracks. For some reason, her sister was trying to lead her outside. Insecurity rose up within her but her sister told her not to worry. Pia wanted to trust her but she was scared. Then she watched as the door in front of her opened slowly.

Through the door, she saw her other siblings and a table full of food and her siblings' instruments. When she asked what was happening her oldest brother solemnly looked at her and apologized. For years they had neglected her out of fear of their parents, but when they went to watch her play recently they didn’t see a prodigy of a musician. They saw a sister who was sad and alone. Deciding to at least begin to rectify this they planned to celebrate her birthday with her for the first time.

For the first few hours into the night, Pia quietly ate and listened to her brothers and sisters. They even played a special song for her. She had no idea how to feel. The young teenager was extremely overwhelmed. Tears soon began flowing from her eyes. Through bleary, confused eyes she saw as her siblings surrounded her. She looked up trying to but failing to stop the flow from her eyes. As her eyes cleared, the lonely girl for the first time felt the companionship of her family as well as the beautiful night sky. Her eyes were drawn to the moon which she had always thought was alone as in the pictures of the sky never really depicted it with the myriad of stars surrounding it. Looking to the dark void while being surrounded by people who actually cared for her she felt desire growing inside her.

The desire to see more. To feel more. To roam and wander. To make friends under the stars and moon. How could she do that though? She was trapped. An animal in a cage. For now, she reigned in her desire as best she could. Every night after that special one she’d quietly venture out to the family garden and watched the sky. Occasionally her siblings would join her and she’d ask a myriad of questions about them learning more and more. With actual hope and dreams, her playing went to a new level. The young teen was quickly becoming a household name among the wealthy and powerful.

She was fine with being forced onto the stage as long as she was able to go home and look at the stars. All good things do eventually end though. One night during the summer, Pia and her siblings got a little more daring. They decided to venture out from their home late at night. The children went to the top of a hill and to watch the stars which they had been told would be falling that night. The night sky with the soaring stars was a wonder to behold. The biggest smile Pia has ever had was on her face. They were enjoying it immensely until they were caught.

They were being a little too rambunctious when a couple members of the Military Police came to where they were and even though they weren't doing anything wrong took them to holding cells as they didn't recognize nor believed that they were the children of the Nacht family. The people who complained to the MP thought they were just random kids who had somehow found thee way into Yarckel and were causing problems. By the time that everything was all said and done the Nacht parents were incredibly embarrassed and harshly punished all of their children.

The cage she saw as her home became even more constrained. The children weren't even allowed to interact with each other. Before she had no desire. Then she gained a dream and hope. Now that it was ripped away from her, feeling like a puppet, she grew to hate her life in the house. The only place she had fun was under the unobstructed night sky. She had to get back to that view. She was becoming desperate, then one night when she, her parent, and tutor were journeying to the Erhmich district for a performance Pia made her move and ran. When her parents and tutor were celebrating the performance, Pia climbed out the window and fled her caged life. She eventually got lost. Then she got scared not realizing fully what she'd done. Where would she go? Who could she turn to? She had no idea how to live outside of her room.

The next few days all blended together. Anytime she saw someone wearing a military uniform she would hide. The MP seemed to be on the hunt for something. Likely her. Despite how scared and hungry she was becoming she was more terrified of going back. She wasn't dumb. She knew that if she went back her freedom would be gone forever. They'd never not have an eye on her. She would miss her brothers and sisters but her parents and tutor were too frightening.

The next few weeks were hard. She barely ate and switching from a big fancy bed to the concrete was not an easy adjustment. Fortunately for her, not everyone in the district were bad people. She found this out when after collapsing from hunger a couple took her in and cared for her. They knew exactly who she was but instead of instantly shipping her off back to her cage they asked her story. When she told them they felt sympathy. They even took her in and helped her. But she knew that she couldn't stay with them forever. She was still within Wall Sina. The longer she stayed the more likely the MP would find her. That would put the nice couple in very hot water. So, after a few weeks, she came up with a plan on how to get away for good. She left a note for the kind couple and left. Her plan? To join the military. They couldn't take her back from the military right? Either way, her parents would never look there.

The three years were gruesomely difficult. She made friends though that helped her along the way, and out in the middle of nowhere, she could still look at the same skies that her siblings were under. She also found that she was quite skilled. She seemed to have a knack for it. By the time the training was over, she was at the top of her class. Fourth place to be precise. However, the MP was not an option. It was well known that corruption existed and she was certain that it'd be too difficult to hide her identity there. The Garrison wasn't all that appealing either. After coming to the training she realized that the walls were also like a cage. This realization drove her to a strong dislike of them.

So, to the Scouts, she went. Her first encounter with a Titan was terrifying but she was saved by An amazing soldier. Hillel Ackerman. Watching him kill Titans was like watching a pianist tickle the ivory keys. She wanted to one day become as strong as him. That night she told Emile and her other friends few friends from training her story. Her true story. She told them about her dream to see the stars every night with people she cared for. The next few years were the typical fare for a Scout. Expedition, home, train, repeat.

Like others, she beat and berated herself over not being around when Shiganshina fell. But what help would she have been? A single Scout against a horde of Titans and two extra-aberrant ones. Seeing the hordes of people sent despondent from their homes broke her heart. But she had no way of helping them. Even the person she desired to be like was in a horrible state. Years later the news that the entire Special Operations Squad, except for Gil, perished made her doubt her own ambition and strength. If they were defeated so easily what hope did she have?

All the death and despair was building. She decided to finally venture back home. She hadn't been there since she was 13 and she was now 21. They couldn't take her back but all of the broken families made her want to see her brothers and sisters again. Even if she had to go through her parents. She was old enough now that they couldn't force her to do anything and she was now a soldier. When she showed up her father didn't hesitate to let his anger show. They blamed her for the loss of recognition and fame the family had. She told them it was all their fault for staking everything on broken children. He tried to slap her but she took that as an opening to truly put him in his place flipping him over her shoulder and landing him on his keister. He had her thrown in jail for that. Pia didn't stay there long as really it was just 'self-defense'. Even if a little excessive. They certainly didn't want her around but her parents were scared she'd lash out at them when she made her way to her old room.

Pia spent the next few days of downtime catching up with her brothers and sisters. Her family was indeed losing favor as her parents had already booked many performances for Pia in the future. Even though she was the one who left the no show caused many to be angry with her parents. That part made her happy but it did have a trickle effect down on her siblings. She was going to rectify that. Somehow. She gave all her collected funds to her oldest brother which was quite a bit. He would know how best to deal with the situation. From then on, other than what she spent on herself, she would send her salary to him. She also began fighting and training harder to rise in the ranks of the Scouts so she could send more to him.

When her parents learned that she was trying to help her siblings get out from under their thumb they disowned her from the family. Not like that mattered much to her at this point. She had already disowned her parents in her own heart. The name was just what she was born with and she'd continue using it whether they wanted to or not. When she was personally requested to join the new Special Operations Squad she took that as a sign that her work was paying off. She refused to let those who trusted in her down and was going to fight to guide humanity out of the desolation it was in and to their dreams.

TLDR; She grew up in a noble family tied heavily to music. She was a piano protege and her parents greedily used that to their advantage. She was a sickly child for her first few years and was basically caged in her room. When she turned thirteen her siblings snuck her out at night to have a party for her. She saw the stars and fell in love. They keep doing this and eventually get caught causing stricter regulations. Pia eventually has enough of this and runs away when in the south for a performance. A kind couple takes her in and in order for them to not get in trouble, she leaves and joins the Scouts. She is an excellent soldier and eventually goes back home when older to help her siblings break away from her parent's thumb only to be disowned by her parents. She eventually gets accepted into the new Special Operations Squad.

Don't misunderstand him though, he will not throw his life away, but he just tends to believe that as long as you can help others you should. Very sociable and kind he is a people pleaser but he will tell you the harsh truth if you're going down a bad path.

Short Backstory:
Born to a simple, country family within Wall Rose in a town named Ragako, Heiko's life was simple and peaceful. It was a calm and average life. He was the middle son but second child of Henrick and Miyuki Schönfinkel. Being of half-Asian heritage did paint a target on their doorstep but thanks to the close relations with the villagers of Ragako the family was safe. It also helped that both Heiko's father and older brother were large hulking figures. With his father being a former Scout Section Commander and his brother serving as a member of the Military Police, Heiko was instilled with noble ideals and a great desire to serve and protect. Heiko would often take up the role of a soldier when playing with his siblings and the other village kids.

After retiring from the Scouts, Henrick had become a lumberjack. Heiko often wanted to assist his father but the work was too dangerous so he was given the task of being the delivery boy for Ragako. He was extremely serious about his job. One day Henrick had business far away in Shiganshina. Something to do with an old comrade. During this time, Heiko was left as the man of the house. He looked after his younger siblings and helped his mother. The young boy even aided the other villagers.

"I'll sacrifice my life if that's what it takes."
Name: Milo Sauer

Age: 15 -> 18

Gender: Male

Origin: Utopia District

Birthday: 8th November

Affiliations: Before joining the cadets, he worked as an unlicensed merchant’s assistant, making money where he could, selling almost anything he could get his hands on.
Milo is from the Northern division of cadets.

Appearance Details: Milo is 5’9, weighs 156 pounds. His hair is a shaggy cinnamon brown which droops gently over his sapphire blue eyes, tinged with a ring of gold the colour of sweet marmalade.

Personality:

Milo is not very trusting. He can be short and sharp-tongued to protect himself but those who he holds dear know that he has a heart of gold and would give his life for them. Initially, his demeanour is cold and apprehensive, but when people begin to understand his true nature and form a close bond, he never forgets them and keeps them close to his heart with the hope they’ll do the same. When Milo is with those he cares for, his icy disposition melts away into a hot spring, lavished with a dazzling patchwork of light as the sun spools through the trees, landing on his good side feels like the first day of Spring.

Milo hates failing more than anything, not only tasks, but failing those who depend on him crushes his soul and wrenches his heart. He will persevere with every last breath to succeed, constantly testing his own limits in the hope of bettering himself. Many have called him a sacrificial fool, whether he takes it to heart, few get the chance to know.

His resilience has made him strong-natured but also compassionate and empathetic, even to those he dislikes, he can’t help but sympathise, understanding enough to attempt to give others the relief that no one could give him. For him to be unable to forgive someone, they must betray him in every sense and offer no trace or tell of sweet redemption. Milo always attempts to understand every side of the story in hopes of finding a way to forgive those who have wronged him.

One fact about Milo that many are surprised to discover is how Milo values knowledge and a deeper understanding of the world. He once viewed knowledge as the true way to save himself. Now, to save humanity. He may acknowledge brute strength and pure manpower, but without true comprehension and perception of his enemies and challenges in life, Milo thinks there is little chance of victory.

Short Backstory:

Living in poverty within the Utopia District, his parents worried constantly as to where their next meal would come from and how they could afford to take care of their children. Milo would constantly take on odd jobs to help provide for his family, even working for a shifty merchant with some questionable connections.

Barely a teen, he devastatingly lost both his brother and his father, rupturing his idea of family. After this, Milo was relied on to provide for the house, responsible for taking care of his mother and himself at the tender age of 12; because of this he has always been hardworking, and when he didn’t earn enough he was subject to abuse and the sight of his mother's disappointed, incredibly stressed eyes, filled with disdain. The years had not been kind to his mother, with all the recent events her health took a turn for the worse and she fell gravely ill. Milo had desperately tried to fix it, to find a solution, even praying for the knowledge needed to cure his poor mother. When he lacked the means for medicine and comprehension of it to save her himself, he never forgave himself for her death.

This tragedy forced him onto the streets, living homeless and scrounging where he could. Eventually, he decided to join the training corps and become a different man, one he felt his mother would be proud of. Milo wants to forget the past, it haunts his every waking moment.

His hands are moderately scarred due to accidental cuts from a carving knife.

Personality:
A bit sluggish, but hard-working to his own extent. Luka maintains a cool and mature disposition for most of his everyday interactions, but on the rare occasion, he is prone to reverting back to his sheepish tendencies. The years of enduring torment subjected from training and trainees have greatly diminished his sensitivity to slander, and he is no longer prone to tears when the going gets too tough, now opting to confront his dissenters directly; he realized that it was necessary to accept his own shortcomings and leave his adolescence behind in order to survive in the new world. The young man retains his good-hearted, polite demeanor from years past, and is very considerate and empathetic towards others, often attempting to be a voice of reason among his comrades. He hosts a lot of internal pride in his intelligence, being one of the sharpest tactical minds within the graduates of the 104th Training Corps. These qualities indicate great strides being taken in potential as an officer, and though he has a tendency to take the easiest route with the least amount of work possible, he knows exactly when a conversation or situation requires his due diligence.

Training alongside and forging last bonds with his closer friends has bolstered his character in a plethora of ways, and although he doesn't want to lean too heavily on their shoulders like he did in previous years, Luka learned that it wasn't wrong to rely on others even if he strives for independence. He considers Jericho Mace to be his closest friend; he has always looked up to Jericho like a stand-in for his actual older brother, trying to emulate the other boy's carefree and charismatic approach as he is generally seen hanging around the latter whenever possible. Though he has attempted to 'mellow' out the other boy by acting as the yin to Jericho's yang, it goes without saying that even Luka wasn't immune to the bad influences of the other boy. With a desire to seek his own personal freedom through disregarding the opinions of undesirable individuals, he has developed a bit of a rebellious streak, which can greatly alter his usual tone into one filled with abrasiveness when under duress. He isn't afraid to answer insults with his fists, even if he isn't the best fighter.

Though Luka has a soft-side for all of his friends, it isn't as evident or prominent regarding his interactions with Nina Polgar, who is the subject of his childish affections. To him, she was the first person to treat him warmly, and she was his first true friend from the very beginning of their training. He spent much of his free time studying chess under her tutelage; learning all of the extensive concepts and theories indirectly bolstered his intelligence, and he credits her for helping tap into his mental potential. It'd been quite obvious that he was very smitten with Nina from his first introduction, and although his affections were unrequited, he still feels a distant obligation to pursue the sentiment, albeit with conflicted reservation. Regardless of his emotions, he is evidently more soft-spoken with Nina, and shows the most concern towards her during their duties in the military.

Short Backstory:

The Soroka family was rather well-off in comparison to the many other families in Shiganshina District. Luka Soroka is the younger son of Stefan and Dallis Soroka (née Stone), and has an older brother named Seth Soroka who is thirteen years his senior; his family owns the Soroka Company, which oversees the canal operations of the water channels between the Walls and their respective districts, as well as being responsible for constructing the boats that ferry along those channels. The boy had a relatively healthy relationship with his parents, but due to his shorter stature and smaller frame, he was one of the neighborhood's primary targets for bullying and torment throughout his childhood years. It would became far more manageable after he befriended the Vinter twins and, much later, Halvor Verdende, who helped to look out for him. He shared an especially close bond with his older brother, who often came back with various expensive gifts in tow for the younger sibling; however, when Luka was six years old, a criminal scheme soon came to light as their family discovered that Seth had been exploiting the company's shipping operations to help smuggle contraband material into the capital and, by extension, the underground city below Mitras, in order to turn a personal profit. This led to a massive meltdown and falling out between his parents and his older brother, which resulted in the departure of Seth Soroka.

Though it was obviously forbidden, Luka regularly kept in touch with his older brother through exchanging letters, learning over time that Seth had enlisted in the military and, a few years later, joined the prestigious Military Police Brigade. Meanwhile, without a proper inheritory to the Soroka Company after Seth's disowning, Luka was being groomed to take over the family business when it would become necessary, starting to work under associates of his father in the district as a shipbuilder's apprentice. He was eleven years old and one year into his apprenticeship when the Fall of Wall Maria occurred, and though he and his parents managed to survive the invasion, they would leave him an orphan after being among the quarter-million deceased that were conscripted by the military in its faux operation to reclaim Wall Maria. Before his parents left, they implored Luka to find his older brother for guidance, as well as inform Seth that they'd forgiven the latter for his criminal actions. This obligation, further spurred by the resolve of Hal and the Vinter twins, barely convinced the thirteen-year-old to enlist in the military, in hopes of joining the Military Police to find and reach Seth.
Suffice to say, Luka made an embarassment out of the 104th Training Corps in his first year of training. It was very evident that the young boy wasn't cut out for the military, and his status as a target for ridicule was actively encouraged by Instructor Krause as a means of 'proper motivation'. He had strongly considered being among the dozens of trainees to drop out from the harsh conditions, but the world turned upside down when he caught himself staring at a girl named Nina Polgar, whom he'd become immediately smitten with. Building up the courage to approach his newfound crush, his life slowly began to turn around as his relations branched out to a handful of closer friends, all of whom encouraged his growth in many differing ways. Studying with Jo sharpened the latent potential in his mental acuity. He found a brotherly figure in Jericho and, to a much lesser extent, Leon, taking in some of their mannerisms as time passed. Vivian and Laurence were always shoulders to lean on for the boy and his longstanding woes, their calming presence providing him with comfort and reassurance. A number of others assisted in his physical development, from hand-to-hand combat to the omni-directional mobility gear, although his physicality only peaked at a middling range towards the final year. Learning and playing chess with Nina formed a bond that he couldn't possibly find elsewhere, and gave him the resolve to wake up every morning.

When the time came for the remaining trainees of the 104th Training Corps to graduate, Luka Soroka found himself utterly disappointed upon placing 11th, just one rank shy of the Top Ten in order to join the Military Police and find his brother. His sudden change in attitude and approach contributed heavily to his meteoric rise in the placements, but it still hadn't been enough to make the cut. It's heavily rumored that a certain event triggered a downward spiral in his assessment within the final weeks of the training phase; even so, he continues to press onward into an uncertain future, with friends by his side.

Name: Katsu Rutland
Age: sixteen
Gender: male
Origin: Shinganshina, Wall Maria
Birthday: 11-03

Appearance
Katsu has been short all through his adolescence, and having only recently shot up a couple of inches to catch up to his peers is having quite the time adjusting to his new view at 5”8. His skin is ivory and quite prone to sun-burn and obvious flushing as a result, his stubbornly straight, deep-black hair standing in stark contrast from its distinct paleness. Eyes are a brown that often appear just as black as his hair, rimmed by thick dark lashes. Of Asian-descent.

Personality
On the surface, Katsu tends to come across as a calm, detached fellow who is slow to familiarity and even slower to warmth. This somewhat anti-social characteristic is only helped along further by the unreadable expression he dons most times and has great trouble fully shaking off, even when in the presence of friends. A lot of the distance Katsu is prone to putting between himself and others springs not from a natural distrust of people, but rather a fear of rejection that springs from plenty of past experience. Though he’s introspective enough to have recognized this in himself, he has little drive to make efforts to change this. There are so many other goals he has yet to put into fruition, and resolving what he considers to be minor character flaws isn’t of the utmost importance on that list. Deeply ambitious, Katsu’s goals are the driving force behind much of his resilience. Strip those away and he’s not sure what he is underneath.
Though deeply introspective, Katsu's understandings of himself don't tend to translate to understanding others and their emotions very well. Though he will at times put effort into being ‘more’ empathetic, he's a little too self-obsessed at the moment to fully place himself in others shoes at this point in his life. This struggle with compassion is made all the more evident when Katsu feels he is the wronged party in some way. He doesn't take betrayal well being of a loyal nature himself, and when wronged tends to lash out in the most unforgiving of ways.
Though his unreadable expression tends to make him at least appear to be the ‘logical one’ in stressful situations, this is not often the case. In truth, Katsu is driven by his feelings more so than anything else. And he’s quite fine with putting logic aside if it means getting his way. Exceedingly stubborn additionally, Katsu tends towards thinking his way, or his idea, to be the 'end-all be-all', and in the (few, in his opinion) instances where he is shown to be wrong has great trouble pushing down his pride enough to issue an apology if needed.

Short backstory
Katsu grew up under his grandparents roof in the top apartment of their well-respected bakery in Shinganshina. His grandparents were looked at by most as kind for both their donating of the bread (though really, it was just the leftovers) to the district’s hungriest and their decision to take in their troubled daughters 'other-looking' child. But Katsu knew them only for their relentless cruelty, for the blame they heaped on him for their daughter's choices. Though when he was young he did his best to make up for his parent's deficiencies, each passing year came with Katsu learning to better place emotional distance between himself and his guardians. Instead his interests would shift to encompass more of the things his admired brother (or really, uncle) was drawn too, most of which consisted of the outside world the man saw atop his station on Wall Maria.
That curiosity in Katsu was further dampened by a particularly impressionable event in his youth when his uncle secretly took his little nephew beyond the walls one day. Though it was too dark to see beyond a foot in front of his lantern-lit hand, the air out there felt sweeter in his lungs, more substantial even. Fixating on the world beyond, Katsu managed to convince himself that there was purpose to be found beyond those walls, beyond even the titans. Though his observations and the motivations that sprung up behind them were likely psychosomatic in nature, they were enough to lead Katsu to foster dreams of joining the Scout's the first chance he got. When the events that led to Shinganshina's wall crumbling happened, they didn't dampen Katsu's dreams. If anything they only strengthened them as the boy enlisted in the Cadet Corps as soon as he reached trainable age.

Quirks
  • Tends to over-dramatize his stronger emotions at times a bit in efforts to compensate for his oftentimes flat-expressions. They can, at times, come off as quite artificial or comical as a result.
  • A pretty good mimic of others in both facial and vocal expressions. The longer he spends with a person, the better his impressions get.
  • His hair looks 'perfect', no matter the occasion or whether he's had the time to run a comb through it or not.
