At the Adventurers' Table: Chapter Sixteen

Imma just drop this here, cause I just found it late and found it too funny to not share:

Captain Hesperus

Heya Gang! Just an update here. I don't know when Psychie will be posting next. Her absence is not because of her health (always a good thing!). Given that she's the party leader, I've been delaying my post (mainly because it's Psychie and I don't want her to miss out). =)

I am able to post here and there, and with luck, I'll have my laptop fixed up and running again soon. Feel free to continue on.

Captain Hesperus Captain Hesperus Tag.

Heya Gang!

Looks like I'll be introducing Jaydude's Alisa into the game soon (hopefully this week). Does anyone else have any advice for Jaydude involving Character Creation or any other subject before that happens?

Jaydude? Have you made certain if you wanted to go with the Divine Bond of weapon or mount? If it is a Celestial Stag, do you have a name for her or him? If not, I can make one.

Hmm. I'm feeling more inclined to go with the Stag Mount idea at the moment. Don't really have a name for him right now though.

Well, your Dungeon Master is a longtime Dungeon Master with ADHD and a cup of delicious and smooth dark roast coffee before him. I think I can get something going. =)

jaydude jaydude How's this look to you? Do you like it? It's a rough draft; I haven't cleaned it up.

And no one does that like Enya!
"Storms in Africa"

This but not a light and timid deer, but a heavier and sure-hearted elk with magical chainmail barding made for bounding, adventuring, and doing battle with those who would despoil the forests.

Barding like this with these colors unless Alisa has changed them. The barding is full-plate-like with matching shin and knee guards, but minus that long cape in the back (which would undoubtedly catch on something while bounding between trees, bushes, and all manner of woodsy things with woodsy "fingers!")

Bounder, the Celestial mount based on the Silverthornian Battle-Elk

Perception +11; darkvision 60 feet., detect evil (constant - 60 ft. radius), detect good (constant - 60 ft. radius), low-light vision, scent
Languages Common (cannot speak Common, but is fluent in Beast Speech)
Skills +0; Acrobatics +10, Athletics +10
Str 20, Dex 20, Con 21, Int 10, Wis 17, Cha 13
AC 26, TAC 15; Fort +7, Ref +7, Will +6
HP 50/50 (maximum)

Buck: The battle-elk won’t use this reaction against a creature in control of it, that domesticated it, or that trained it.
Trigger: A creature Mounts the battle-elk or gives it a Command while riding upon it.
Effect: The rider must succeed at a DC 17 Acrobatics check to Maintain its Balance or fall off the battle-elk.

Speed: 80 feet (much faster that of a draught horse and many normal other creatures of its size)
Melee: gore +9 "to hit", Damage d6+5 bludgeoning; hoof +9 "to hit", Damage 1d8+5 bludgeoning.
Gallop: The battle-elk Strides twice. It’s accelerated 15 during these Strides.
Gear: Full Plate Barding +2 of Wilderness Alacrity (does not slow the user, does not possess the Noisy trait, provides Pass Without Trace and Freedom of Movement per the Spells whenever it is worn - a gift from the Highwind Rangers, an intrepid band of wilderfolk who gather information and harry the enemies of Highwind, they are loyal unto death to King Wildegard and the city of Highwind). Note for Jaydude: These traits on the armor means Bounder can just pick up and haul tail through the wilderness with little chance of any mundane creatures catching him.

Silverthornian Battle-elk notes:
Alisa learned that Bounder is not actually a Silverthornian battle-elk, but a Celestial battle-elk from a different plane of existence and the plane of many Finnish gods, The Happy Hunting Grounds. The rules for reality are different there. However, Alisa has gotten by quite well using the same lessons learned from the Silverthornian battle-elks as are touched upon below.

It is the great fool who treats a battle-elk in the same manner as a domesticated horse. In Averlund, the battle-elks hail from a far-off forested city called Silverthorn where human Cavaliers practice great chivalry and heroic deeds on the backs of these beloved steeds, many of them chargers. It is highly unlikely that Alisa will encounter another battle-elk this far north in and around Highwind. They simply don't roam here.

If a race horse is a sports car on the street, then a battle-elk is a custom-made all-terrain sports motorcycle or ATV meant for taking on rough terrain, except that the battle-elks casually dash and spring between trees, over rocks and gullies, and under branches like no other creature on the continent of Averlund. As prey animals, they are sometimes skittish, always aware of their surroundings (even when heavily-wounded or fatigued), and ready to move in an instant. Unlike typical prey animals, male battle-elks like Bounder have strong tempers and will fiercely charge and gore like their larger and heavier cousins, the moose. Alisa has personally seen fully-armored orcs fly through the air and massive, angry ogres stop in their tracks upon being gored by Bounder. He hits with everything he has.

Silverthornian Battle-elk care:
Battle-elks eat about 3 pounds of food for every 100 pounds of weight. Depending on the season of the year, battle-elks typically eat grasses, shrubs, twigs, and sometimes licks for their minerals and their benefits to keeping a strong and shiny coat. As a Celestial creature, Alisa knows without a doubt that should Bounder fall in battle, it is of no permanent consequence as his spirit will simply return to the Happy Hunting Grounds whence he came. This, of course, divides Alisa and Bounder - a fate neither of them desire. Questions have arisen - can Bounder be raised from the dead if slain? Alisa, not being a Cleric, Druid, or Healer, lacks the answer.

Bounder notes:
Bounder is a male elk, about 8 years old, still in the prime of his youth. He answers only to Alisa, but does pay lip service to Mielikki's truly faithful. He seems to have a knack for knowing who is truly loyal to the Lady of the Forest and who is simply feigning to further some agenda. He has never mated. Alisa has never heard him "bugle" as elk oft do during the autumn season. Alisa also knows normal elk (not battle-elk) thrive north of Highwind in the Frozen Reaches where barbarians, giants, and other legendary creatures are quite real and quite dangerous.

Bounder weighs about 900 pounds of mostly muscle and fat, without counting barding and gear, and eats around 27 pounds of food daily. Bounder is one of those who gets pretty irritable when he goes hungry for too long (add +2 difficulty DC to all Survival Skill commands until fed). When Bounder moves, he moves! Because of his temperament, youth, and just being a battle-elk, his take-off speed and acceleration are as powerful as they are sudden. He is not a mount for beginners, but Alisa is no beginner and Bounder is her Divine friend.

Alisa and Bounder's background:
A gift bestowed from one of Mielikki's patrons (a Celestial Angel-hound called Rhu who is closely allied with the Lady of the Forest, brave and loyal Rhu has answered several of Alisa's prayers in her adventures past). Bounder came in answer to Alisa's prayers and deeds. At the time, Alisa simply couldn't keep her hands on a good horse. Nor did she have the coin to keep purchasing fully-geared war horses. Her prayers to Mielikki for aid brought to her a shining battle-elk, a creature no one in Highwind could really help her get to know, but. Alisa and Bounder have been together for quite some time (since Alisa was 5th level, this is indeed the first and only Divinely Bonded creature she ever had - an accomplishment so sayeth the Clerics of Mielikki at Earthhome).

Alisa knows Bounder to be at least of average human intelligence. When she comes across the means to cast the Speak with Animals spell, Bounder comes off as a justice-seeking hot-head, suspicious of strangers who are not clearly allies of the forest. He is a born defender, selflessly putting his body in harm's way of the innocent, and if left to his own devices, he has been known to hunt down and kill evildoers - at least those he believes he can take on alone. Bounder does not suffer fools gladly, but makes great exceptions towards children of all types and people who suffer from mental and emotional disorders. These, he comforts and defends as if they were his own.

Finally, the last time Alisa spoke with Bounder using a Speak with Animals Spell (a Spell that unfortunately is not a Paladin-spell), Bounder alluded to the idea that he was on some form of personal quest here on the Prime Material Plane (the world or "plane" Alisa was born on, also called Sharseya). Alisa learned that it was something dear to Bounder's heart, in the great forests of Shandra's Evergreen where the two often adventured together, the quest involved the past, and could be undertaken at leisure. Unfortunately, as fate would have it, the Spell's time elapsed before Alisa could learn anything more.

Yeah, that definitely works for me.

In related news, Psychie Psychie has been having computer issues and I don't know when she'll be able to post here again. Given that she's the party leader, with this may cause a delay in game.

But if so, just remember - "it ain't no thing but a chicken wing!"

Weapon Focus - Rapier: +1 bonus on attack rolls with one weapon (Prerequisite for Fencing Grace).
Weapon Focus is great by itself, but bear in mind that Fencing Grace is not currently in Sharseya. Dannigan Dannigan -- It looks like it'd be a fun addition, though!

Fencing Grace (Combat)
Source Ultimate Intrigue pg. 83, Advanced Class Origins pg. 27
Your dashing style and fluid rapier forms allow you to use agility rather than brute force to fell your foes.

Prerequisites: Dex 13, Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus (rapier).

Benefit: When wielding a rapier one-handed, you can add your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to that weapon’s damage. The rapier must be one appropriate for your size. You do not gain this benefit while fighting with two weapons or using flurry of blows, or anytime another hand is otherwise occupied.

In addition, if you have the panache class feature, you gain a +2 bonus to your CMD against attempts to disarm you of your rapier while you have at least 1 panache point.
We don't have panache, but just being able to add Dex instead of Str to weapon damage seems worth the feat slot.

Lore (includes Profession from Pathfinder 1.0) - (Intelligence): 4
You need to specify what particular Lore Alisa has ranks in (can be multiple types, but each is "bought" separately"). Some good options are listed here. Yes, that's the Pathfinder 2.0 list, but since we're using the 2.0 skills list I think most of them can apply -- but also note that Sharseya has "Lore: Monsters" which can come in pretty handy, moreso than PF 2.0's "Lore: specific creature or narrow type of creature."

Performance (Charisma): 4
I know in Pathfinder 1.0 we had to specify a particular type of performance for our character (and like Lores, they had to be "bought" with separate ranks). For example, Kaerri has "Performance (Dance)." Dannigan Dannigan -- is this still the case? If so, the list for that here.

It says you have two skill points unused. You can have up to 13 ranks in a skill right now; did you want to raise Religion? (Since it seems Alisa's focusing pretty strongly on that.) Did you want to raise any of those 4s to 5? (Since doing so would place her on a new "tier" of expertise, as it were -- but if it's not in character for her to be on that tier, no worries!)

I'm really liking the concept of a Dex-based paladin. I haven't seen too many of those. ^D^

If the Weapon Focus feat's good enough on its own, I don't mind not having Fencing Grace included in the game. Just to let you and Dann know.

Assuming I don't decide to just drop the skill, I'm thinking about having the Lore be about Highwind. I did consider both Hunting Lore and Mielikki Lore to represent Alisa's focus on those subjects, but I don't know if that's better represented by the Survival and Religion skills, respectively.

Yeah, looking at what Performance seems to be all about, I'm thinking about just dropping the skill entirely, and using the points for something else. Possibly Stealth; I'm not too sure about having the wizard be better at sneaking around than the huntress (though it could admittedly be interesting; Alisa wonders how Luna's able to sneak around so easily, and he replies "I looked it up".)

Dannigan Dannigan
Also, apologies for the change of mind - and making your effort spent on Bounder go to waste - but I'm kinda thinking of going for a Divine Bond with Alisa's longbow, rather than one with a mount. After giving it a bit more thought, I feel like the former's a better fit for my character concept, plus I wouldn't call my current selection of weapons - a longbow and a rapier - particularly suited for mounted combat.

It's the first from a PC I've ever had at my table, virtual or physical, and I've been at this for a little while. I'm stoked not only for the type of Character but to see whom Jaydude has created here! =)

Kaerri-darlin', thanks for the assist and for your valuable perspective, you! =)

No, no, no Jaydude! Nothing I create is considered "wasted." Only if I am not creating are my energies sometimes put to no good use (like when I'm recovering from a headache or migraine - that always feels like a waste. Heh!). Dear Bounder is now locked away safely in My Private Workshop perhaps for some future use. Please understand that the act alone of creating something cool is time well spent for this Dannigan! Really! =)

Now, as for Alisa's longbow, since you're on the road to this change then are you open to giving a cool name and perhaps description for this longbow? Is it a composite longbow? Is it made from a special kind of yew or some other wood maybe? What color is it? What about its string? Does Alisa have any markings, carvings, feathers, or decorations upon it? How did she come by it? Let's have fun! =)

More later. =)

Please someone remind me later to finally get on those Feat recommendations? I've gotten distracted just about every time I've tried to focus on them and right now, my ADHD is playing Tasmanian Dannigan with me! Ha ha!

Hey. Just letting you know that I'm still trying to focus on this.

It's definitely described as a composite longbow on my character sheet. In terms of more details, I'm not feeling particularly creative when it comes to fantasy right now, but I'll try and have some input here.

I'm thinking that at the very least, it'll be something she picked up after she became a paladin, and that it was given to her for the sole purpose of being used in Mielikki's service. Also thinking of calling it Heartseeker, or at least that's the first name I considered. I did think about calling it Sydämen Etsijä (apparently Finnish for "heartseeker" according to Google Translate), but in the end I decided to stick with the English name.

That's fine! It's a roleplaying game, not a university exam, right? Hah! The idea is to have fun with it! =)

If you aren't feeling creative when it comes to fantasy (and are instead hankering for a non-fantasy approach), what would that approach be? Something Exalted-like (which I've never played)? White Wolf (which I most definitely have)? Sci-fi (the reason I have two games because I love both genres)? If the answer is, "None of the above" then that's okay too! Roleplaying is a wonderful hobby where imaginations soar and daydreams are shared. There is no time clock to punch into, no duties to perform. Just fun, togetherness, and sharing! At least, that's how I see it. =)

I mean, this game is in the fantasy genre, at least by my reckoning. And I don't know how much Exalted fits with the setting, at least in terms of power levels and general aesthetic.

And yeah, I'm glad that you're not putting me under any pressure here. But I also don't want to delay my entry in this game too much, if that's going to cause problems for people.
