About 200 years after the gold rush of 1849 asteroid mining finally began to mature. Of course, such a venture was mostly for the rich at that time. But a little over three decades have passed since then. 99% of asteroid mining is done by large corporations. However, there are a handful of intrepid entrepreneurial men who won’t be denied the next frontier.
I am one of those men. Apparently I wasn’t good enough for NASA, or DARPA, or SpaceX, or any of the other dozen space agencies or colonial pursuits. Oh I managed to find work as a glorified tech or space janitor.
You? You ran into the same obstacles. You found work as a cargo pilot, or shuttle pilot. Routine and boring work largely being taken over by robots.
We met at a bar - something I seldom did. But the bartender knew me. Apparently I always ordered the same drink - a Virgin Mary, then a second. After that it was some 0 calorie fruit flavored drink. Then some hot shot company pilots and such came in and you, me, and a few other people were asked to move to make room for a group. The owner manager looked apologetic and offered us free drinks.
I had looked at him and asked - within earshot of the others - if the group thought to make reservations. A couple of the men from the Company started to bristle. The answer was obvious, but I said to forget it.
We got to talking. The conversation drifted to the idea of striking out on our own. The idea was insane. The costs were incredible. First, you needed a ship, plus peripheral mining scooters (ATV’s for space), food and air, fuel. Then we would have to compete with the big companies. I said, I had most of that already figured out. What I needed was a pilot. I already had a ship. It was junk, but still serviceable. Not much space, but that would come in time. (The tech links I have above should give clues as to my methods.)
