Fantasy Arkentales (Looking for players)

Put simply, this is a light hearted JRPG-inspired RP in a similar vein as games like Etrian Odyssey, and animes like Overlord, Log Horizon, and the (highly divisive) Sword Art Online. Unlike the JRPG trope though, there likely won't be two nations at war nor would the world be facing a turbulent period with monsters on the rise. Instead, the opposite is likely true with the world having survived radical changes, and settling into a more peaceful era. Even so, there are still crises and dangers in the form of human ambitions, and ancient relics of bygone eras disrupting the present peace.

  • Long ago, two denizens of heaven fell in love and decided to marry. On the wedding day, the groom sent his messenger ahead with the dowry, a magic treasure box containing many precious gems and jewelry painstakingly collected from every corner of the evening sky.

But on his way to the bride’s palace, the messenger was buffeted by a flock of northward geese, and dropped the treasure chest, which fell through the clouds into the sea.

The box’s contents spilled out, and formed the first land, plants, peoples, and living things of the earth.

At the wedding, the groom apologized sincerely to his bride for losing her dowry, but the bride led him to a place where they could peer at the world forming beneath the clouds, and said. “You've already given me the best dowry a person could've desired.”

The road you’re on is a straight and easy one, gently rising and falling over the hills spaced some sixty feet apart as if to avoid tiring the traveller while keeping hidden what’s beyond the next hill so as to gather anticipation with each approaching step. Journeying on it has been almost a pleasure in itself.

A town sits close by, but your thoughts tend to the town beyond where you have business to take care of. It wouldn’t hurt to stay a night though where there’s food and comfort, and most importantly, people.

As you ascend the top of the next hill, you see a young girl sitting next to the road. Her attire shows that she’s most likely from the town nearby, and her eyes reveal that she’s been waiting for you to pass.

With a friendly smile and a cheerful tone, Zeke shifts the rather big, stuff sacked over his shoulder and approaches the young girl.

"Excuse me little one, but this town is Strongmill correct?"

She nods. At first, she seems relieved by your friendly manner, but faint worry enters her face a second later when a fear seems to occur to her. "That's correct, mister." There's a moment's pause then she asks what seems to have been on her mind. "Sir, might you be an adventurer?"

Zeke tilts his head as he notices the expression change on the little girl's face. He puts the sack down and crosses his arms at her question, "Hmmm.... I've never thought about it, but I guess you can call me an adventurer. Why do you ask? And you shouldn't be out here alone."

She smiles softly at your concern. "I can handle myself." Taking a closer look at her outfit, you notice that the gloves, and the pouches at her belt aren't exactly gear that the everyday townsfolk would wear. "Sir, if you'll let me, I'd like to hire you. We need adventurers to help us drive away the King of the Forest that's taken residence inside the town mill."

Zeke smirks at her comment and scratches his nose, "Haha very well!" Zeke then tilts his head again and crosses his arms, a little bit of confusion on his face, "Hire me? You don't look old enough to have a job yourself. And why haven't the adults taken care of this problem?"

Zeke then frowns a little, "I may have been born at night, but it wasn't last night. I don't say yes to strangers without details. Please tell me more of this 'king'."

"Well... actually, it's the mayor of our town who'll hire you. And we've tried, sir. Mr. Robinson, the adventurer who lives in our town, climbed the mill last week, but he fell and hurt his leg. When he told us what kind of monster was in the mill, everyone grew scared. My father - he's a retired adventurer - said that this is a situation only adventurers can handle. That's why I've been here waiting by the main road to see if I can find anyone who'll take care of the king for us. "

"The King... we call him the King of the Forest because he keeps the balance in the forest next to our town. He rarely ever leaves the forest so we were very surprised to find him in our mill one morning. Please, sir, won't you help us?"

Zeke let's out a small sigh, feeling bad for pestering the little girl. Then he cracks a grin and puffs out his chest, "Very well then! My name is Zeke and I shall help you and your town."

He then picks the sack back up carries it over his shoulder, "But first, is there a forge in town? I would like to make sure my sword and shield are in perfect condition. This being must be called king for reasons other than keeping balance no? He must be strong."

The girl beamed with happiness. "Oh, thank you, sir! I am called Frederica, and my father is the owner of the town inn. Please stay with us tonight till you're ready to face the King."

"I'll tell our blacksmith to check your equipment. I'm sure he'll be willing to help if it's for the town. No one really knows how strong the king is. He usually stays in the forest, and only comes out once a year in the spring to bless our fields at night. No one's ever really seen him either. Even Mr. Robinson, who got knocked off the top floor of the mill, only caught a glimpse of him."

Zeke chuckles as Frederica becomes cheerful, "Thank you for offering a room to me, I greatly appreciate it."

Zeke then scratches the back of his head, "I mean no disrespect, but I would rather tend to me weapons myself. If you can just tell the blacksmith I'll be stopping by, that would be great. I'll also be using my own tools, but I will pay him if he desires."

As Zeke begins to walk past Frederica, he stops and turns around to face her, "Eh one more thing Frederica, but is there others waiting? I would imagine this would be more than a one person job."

"Sure, I'll tell him that. I don't think he'll mind."

"Yup, there's an acolyte staying at our inn as well. When he heard the problem we're in, he offered to help right away."

"The town is this way~" She skips ahead a little to lead the way. Beyond the next hill, they can see the rows of houses and surrounding farmland that comprise Strongmill.

Zeke smiles as he shifts the bag and follows Frederica, a cheerful look on his face. He smile gets wider as he can't wait to tend to his weapons. He picks up his pace to catch up to Frederica.

Half an hour later, you're walking down Strongmill's main street. The houses on either side have shops on the first floor with attractive coloured awnings that gave the community a light, friendly feel.

"Our inn is further down this street." Frederica said, pointing to the only three story building in sight. "Would you like to rest first, or go to the blacksmith's?"

(Feel free to add details to the town. I'm not very good at designing places so the description is quite vague at the moment.)

Zeke looks at the inn as Frederica points out it, "I'll stop by the inn first, I would like to change out of my armor before heading to the blacksmith's."

Zeke looks around as they continue walking. The main street seemed to be pretty busy. People of all sorts walking, buying, and socializing with each other. ' The town seems to be in good spirits despite the situation, that's good. ' he thinks to himself.

"So where is the mill located exactly?"

"Okay, let's go meet Father first."

"The mill's just outside of town where the fields are. Everyone in town helped to build it so they decided to put it where it'd be easy for everyone who wants to use it.

The inn was one of the last buildings on the street. Like the rest of the buildings in town, it had a strong wooden frame, appealing white bricks, and blue shingles. A sign on the porch says, "All travellers welcome."

Frederica bounded lightly up the steps. "Dad, I'm home."

"Welcome home." The voice was deep, but sounded kind and reserved. As you cross the door frame, you see that the voice belongs to a man with rectangular spectacles behind the counter, tending to a guest sitting on a stool on the other side. You heard from Frederica that he was a retired adventurer, but this unimposing looking man doesn't seem to have the physique for the travel and dangers that adventuring entails. You'd thought the same about Frederica as well, but she had said she could handle herself. At the time, you thought it was just childish confidence, but looking at her father, you wonder if maybe she wasn't kidding after all. You look more closely at her father, but whatever secret strength parent and child might possess, you don't see it.

Zeke walks up to the counter, "Good day to you sir, my name is Zeke. Your daughter told me of the town's predicament, so I'll help to the best of my abilities."

Zeke offers a handshake to the man.

"Thank you Steven, I greatly appreciate your hospitality."

Zeke continues, "If I can just change and drop my things off, that'll be fine. I'll be heading to the blacksmith of your town."

"Also, is the acolyte staying here as well? I would like to meet him or her since we will be working together."

"Of course." A ring of keys hung at his waist. He took one off, and handed it to his daughter. "Frederica, please show our guest to his room."

"I'll be happy to introduce you. But I'm afraid he's out at the moment. Perhaps you'll like to visit the blacksmith, and rest before meeting him."

Zeke smiles as Frederica begins to show him to the room. Zeke does want to rest for a while, but the thought of working on his weapons gets him excited.

"I'll just change real quick, and then head to the blacksmith's shop. I don't want to take anymore of your time, so if you just kindly point me in the right direction, I'll escort myself."

"Sure. It's the building with the black roof we passed by earlier. There's a gold coloured sign that says 'Smithy' on it."

You and Fredreica take the flight of stairs behind the counter at the back of the room. On the second floor, there are three rooms on either side of the hall, and at the far end, two washrooms, and opposite to it, stairs to the third floor where Frederica and her father lives. Frederica unlocks the middle room on the right. "Here you are." The door opens into a small room for one with comfortable furnishing and a window view towards the forest, and farther away, the white tipped mountains. Frederica hands you the key. "Please make yourself comfortable. Meals are offered downstairs three times a day. And there's a bath on the first floor."

Zeke nods as he enters the room and turns around to Frederica, "Thank you and your father for all this. Now may I ask this? Is it just me and the acolyte facing the King? Or are you waiting for others?"

Frederica's face fell a little. "It's just the two of you, sorry. Mr. Robinson has pledged his help too, but with his injured, I'm not sure he'll be much help. So please retreat if things get dangerous."

Zeke shakes his head when Frederica mentions Mr. Robinson, "No no, there's need for him to endanger himself more. Hopefully the two of us with will be enough. Once again thank you for all this, I'll be changing now and off to the smith shop."

Zeke smiles once more at Frederica before closing the door.
