Honestly just from the first post, the tone/theme is exactly the kind of thing that I'd sit and read a book of.

Anyway yes. Hello! While the cult investigation is going on at a charming pet store I will try writing something that beautifully ties bugboy in with the rest of the story. And those infamous co-owners (as well as decide and solidify what exactly they're up to and how competent they are at it).

So the cult leader killed the art dealer, but on somebody else's orders? Using his miracle-disembowelment powers. Either one of Vixkrik's associates is involved with the cult, or they've struck some kind of deal with them in exchange for the use of his powers for their own ends. Perhaps they're responsible for supplying funds or property or connections in exchange for his powers- they see a powerful Dreamer and think they can control him with money. And of course, all of that leaves a (hastily covered up) trail leading to the company.
...Which I quite like, if only for how much of a bad idea that would be for them to do, and I'm assuming it'd wind up with them not having as much power over the deal as they thought. Or just not having a complete picture of what they're dealing with, and who might be investigating.

But that would depend the nature of the cult leader (or whoever killed Ms. Hardinel, if it was someone else and I managed to get the wrong end of the stick). Or perhaps the deed was carried out by a cult member with some (unpredictable) aspects of the Dreamer power imbued upon them by the leader? To make the link a little less direct. Again, depends how that mechanic works exactly.

Yeah, I think the idea here is that Dreamers often wind up with abilities that make them very difficult to conventionally deal with, so a Dreamer who got dealt a lucky hand on powers would be able to make a lot of money doing dirty work for others. I think his power, just so that we're all on the same page about what happened, is the ability to know intuitively what is being observed and what is not being observed, over a radius that he has some control over. Combined with augmentations and expensive gear it means he's slippery. I also think he's kind of dim and doesn't really 'like' the abstract nature of his power. Doesn't relate to his dream avatar at all. Since that should happen sometimes.

His Dream Avatar is a many armed, many eyed colossus with a spherical and too large head that sits in a dark cave with no exits, recording on stone tablets.

And I was imagining that Polyocules was himself the killer - dream cultists are mostly dangerous in that they're batteries Dreamers feed off of. Not capable of carrying out anything fancy like assassinating a rich lady in a nice district in a relatively secure residential tower with no real hard evidence left behind.

If I had to pick a route to take, I'd say that it's probably the case that Vix's buddies (or just one of them) are giving the guy money and guns in exchange for services rendered. If they are reprehensible enough it is perhaps the case that they killed Ms. Hardinel for really dumb reasons, and if they aren't it's probably tied to making a quick buck or covering something embarrassing up, right? Another interesting angle to consider is that they are testing out people that they think are capable of getting the drop on Vix - who better to send than a bloodthirsty, effective, and ultimately dispensable Dreamer? The guy probably doesn't even quite realize his peril dealing with them, since he's so enamored with the cash.

Since neither of them are 'important' the way that Olly was worried about he'll probably get little red daggers in his eyes when he figures the thing out. Definitely going to aim for the head on that one.

Sounds good. XD Just a question, were there any length posting requirements? I usually don't write quite as much as your introduction post.

Mmmm, not really. Just enough! Maybe like three or four grafs for the intro and a graf or two for body posts? I will tend to run long if I am way into something but I don't have any particular requirements in mind.

Alright, alright good to know and can do. Same, sometimes I can write paragraphs upon paragraphs and sometimes I just... can't.

Makes sense to me! And also sounds fun. I was wondering if his power directly related to the disembowelling, but if he's augmented and/or armed then that can take care of that. More so if he's adopting "ritualistic" habits to fit a view of himself. But anyway! I doubt that the two criminal masterminds will be that bothered about the method, so long as their whims have been met.

And I'm absolutely for them being reprehensible and dumb, and likely to get careless once they think they've gotten away with it. Not to mention as disposable as they are despicable, unless they somehow develop into sympathetic characters before Olly's swift boot of justice comes down on them. Stranger things have happened.

Okay, here's a sketch of what I was planning as the background behind the assassination and the dealings with Polyocules. Wrote it as part of a longer summary for my own reference, but I'm posting this chunk here because a) Vix won't know most of this when I'm writing from his perspective and b) the ideas within can be inspected and changed as needed... or if I've made an obvious mistake, whoops.
Also c) it's useful to be on the same page when it comes to NPCs and their motivations, if it shapes what others are involved in.
d) I ended up writing something thing that's more akin to a police report than writing an actual narrative post for the RP, great job me

Going with the names I had for these two beforehand, but not sure exactly how they'd be treated... let's say as surnames. I'm sure every species has different naming conventions, but hey.

The assassination of Ms. Hardinel by Polyocules was ordered by (Mr.) Crimaron and (Mr.) Ona-ti, two of the three owners of the Arcadian Assurance Company. The AAC is an unassuming but well-known insurance firm that caters to the rich of Port Gladys, and its owners keep some esteemed company.

Crimaron is a Hamaedron whose intelligence and suave nature has become somewhat overshadowed by his greed. He and Vixkrik started up what became the AAC, with the Hamaedron bringing his knowledge of running a business to make something of the Druner's skills as an actuary. He also recruited Ona-ti, an Anonoki with some more dubious ties. Things went well for almost a decade, the AAC becoming recognised as a legitimate and trustworthy company, with Crimaron leading the way in buttering up potential clients. After all, a Hamaedron is far more appealing to most than a Druner or an Anonoki, and Crimaron had experience in dealing with people, albeit not of such a high social status. Ambitious and aspirational, he is not somebody who takes "no" for an answer, and is rarely happy with what he has. He has a weakness for gambling and showering objects of his affection with lavish gifts, and is quickly jealous if anyone else tries to (in his eyes) outperform him.
He is good-looking and stylish (as typical for his species), his attire reminding others of his (supposed) wealth. He talks easily to others and is superficially likeable. Insults or accusations he will laugh off once before turning and becoming offended, though he's at least aware enough not to make threats beyond the legal kind.

Ona-ti, the Anonoki, is more of a silent partner of the AAC. From the start he has had little interest with dealing with the rich customers themselves. Instead he was responsible for drawing in the details and making the necessary connections to support Crimaron's grandiose ideas. His own ambition is one to match, and he has plenty of experience in how the world works (and confidence in himself), as well as being the eldest of the three. He was always careful with what he tied his name to, staying out of the spotlight to the extent that most customers had no idea an Anonoki was even involved in the company.
Was always careful, that is. As with the other two, the level of wealth Ona-ti accumulated was new territory for him, but it's safe to say he got overwhelmed in a way even Crimaron didn't. Instead of mixing with the rich and their social politics, he found solace in the seedier parts of Port Gladys where he had learned his trade. But he had too much trust and too much hubris: word soon got around of the money he had, and it quickly began to dwindle. Instead of gambling, he developed a habit for Blue Spore, a soporific drug that potently affects Anonoki, and it didn't take long for his care in his work to vanish completely.

By the time of the current events, Ona-ti has outlived his usefulness for business as far as Crimaron is concerned (and Vixkrik had always only been distantly polite to this partner he understood was necessary). But he is still always asking for money, offering nonsensical plans and invented names in a way which clearly make sense to him and lets him believe that he's as sharp as before. Crimaron's funds are fast dwindling to nothing due to his own habits, but Ona-ti is already in debt, and seems to earnestly believe that Crimaron is willing to help him. So, in the Hamaedron's eyes, a drain on resources doubling as a potential scapegoat, who still carries himself as though he's the one confidently behind every scheme.

Several weeks ago, Ms. Hardinel had been brought to the AAC to affirm the value of a client's art pieces that they wanted to insure. It was not the first time she'd done this, and she had met Vixkrik and Crimaron face to face before in a business context (though she was not a customer of theirs). Later that evening she met Crimaron again at an art exhibition—he had learned of it when speaking to her earlier, and feigned interest, pretending that he was already attending before buying his way into the event. He purchased one of the art pieces and offered it as a gift for her, but she refused, making it clear that she had no interest in him and would rather spend the evening doing her job. Alone.

A few days later he turned up at her place of work, stressing all the while that he was there as a client. He wished to sell the piece of art she had been interested in, and that he now had in his collection. She, perhaps understandably, just told him to leave, and he soon lost his temper, insisting on his role as an innocent customer who was being denied business for no good reason. Likewise, she replied with some less than complimentary words. But he had enough sense to leave before the argument drew real attention, and she never saw him again.

Ona-ti is the one who made contact with Polyocules and his cult, told by Crimaron to state that he was there on his own behalf only, though the Anonoki hinted that he had "powerful friends". He offered the cult leader a "gift" of money and weapons, with the promise of more if he would carry out a job or two. Ms. Hardinel had been an experiment of sorts, a preamble to killing Vixkrik: somebody who lived a similar lifestyle to the Druner, but in an apartment with security to protect her and the artwork she might have stored at her place of residence. As Crimaron spun it to the Anonoki, she was a target unconnected to them, but who had money and presented some challenge to this new ally of theirs. In truth, he was obviously still angry at her rejection, but perhaps expected the task to be too much of a challenge for Polyocules. Or maybe being two steps away from her murder was enough to make it seem unreal. He was certainly surprised when he learned of her death, though neither guilty nor regretful. Ona-ti, for his part, was just delighted that it had worked according to plan, proving that he could still do it.

They had tried hiring another killer once before, and it not only failed but nearly got both of them arrested on suspicion of conspiracy. Since then, Crimaron seemed to grasp the difficulty of what they wanted to do and became more careful: not only with distancing himself from the crime itself and finding somebody capable, but figuring out how to more discreetly take the money. He used one of Ona-ti's old programs to make a few payments into an account under a false name, under the guise of backdated art sales. They slipped their way amongst the legitimate records as Ms. Hardinel's account was automatically compiled and closed as the system learned of her death. Of course, anyone with the know-how would notice this, and again Ona-ti was the one sent out to retrieve the money and render it untraceable... well, however that's done in entirely virtual currency like this. And perhaps not done completely effectively. Still, it covered the cost of Polyocules' gift and reward, as well as helping stave off looming bankrupcy.
As for the art piece purchased, Crimaron intentionally gambled it away a few nights later, pretending that he wasn't glad to be rid of the thing.

Okay, chances of either of them evolving into sympathetic, forgivable characters is dwindling fast. Crisis averted. Let the boot of justice swiftly fall.

I might try to flesh out his character a bit more, but for now I think we can assume he uses brutal methods because he is just kind of nasty and short tempered and something of a specialist with melee weapons.

What's interesting is that in spite of being really gross people neither of them can really defend themselves, so from a non-Association perspective it's kind of messed up that Olly is just going to kill them both in cold blood to keep a creditor happy. I suppose part of his detachment is resigned acceptance of a certain degree of realpolitik, and it's not like they're blameless.

This works great! Having one of them be addled and slow and careless explains how that plot will eventually unravel once folks chew through Polyocules.

Maybe they keep trying to work with him on another hit or are figuring out the Vix angle with him (Poly)? That would give Vix something to very shortly start worrying about.

That's true. I guess it's just an escalation of manipulation and greed, with the mindset of "Well, I'm not killing anyone myself, therefore it's not really my fault that they're dead and my hands are clean". Leaving aside the fact that, as well as being directly responsble for murder, they're funding and arming a Dream cultist... whoops.
Especially the kind to take to his assignment with such enthusiasm.
Either that shocks the two that hired him, or they think that it might lead investigation away from being a paid job—it's just a Dreamer gone crazy.

I have them down as not really knowing much about Dreamers. As in, they're obviously aware that they exist, but they exist as kind of... a class of bizarre yet dangerous beings who have to be bribed or avoided. With no idea that Vix is one of them, though doubtful they'd have a change of heart about killing him if they did find out.

I'm assuming there's some kind/s of Port Gladys police looking into it but without knowing fully what they're dealing with. Or just private security companies/specialist services that have to be paid to investigate or pursue anything (ah, space capitalism). Maybe as soon as they learn that a Dreamer is involved and that Olly is here, they back off anyway.
If Hardinel's family are around, they might want somebody to do something about it.

(This is all just... Hypothetical suggestion things. I need to actually write that scene-setting post soon, but probably won't have time today... but weekend is soon)

He's definitely suspicious of them (or at least suspicious of Crimaron, probably underestimating Ona-ti's involvement), thanks to their behaviour and also from watching them via Dream powers. But not to the extent that he actually knows what's going on... he doesn't think they'd actually have the guts to kill someone, let alone make a serious attempt at him. It's more that he think's they'll try to forge documents giving up his ownership of the company, or try to disgrace/depose him in some way.

Also makes me wonder how his Dreamer ability would work in relation to Polyocules', AKA if his "knowing when he's observed" includes Vix's out-of-time observation ability, if it would even work on another Dreamer.
(Though I'll say that Vix didn't see this murder happen. Though in future, who knows how it would work... HMM)

But yes, I'd say that Crimaron would send Ona-ti to get in touch with Polyocules again, if he thinks they've gotten away with it. Probably at the worst possible time, when the net is closing. Maybe Ona-ti acts on his own and just gets caught and disowned: the general consensus is that the person organising the killings has been dealt with, but Olly may not be convinced.
RIP in peace mushroom man

Anyway yes. More hypotheticals/ideas that may or may not come to anything...
Not sure how Micael would fit into this side of things just yet, but I'm guessing it'll mostly be from another angle and there will be Yet More Ideas once it all starts...

W/r/t Polyocules and Vix, maybe if you have one guy who knows when things are being watched, and one guy who watches things from outside of space and time, maybe it is a kind of a itch-on-the-brain awareness that drives Polyocules nuts whenever Vix is observing him, and he's canny enough to figure out that it's more Dream stuff?

I think making it Olly's problem is Hardinel's friends and family involving private security - the Silver Arrows are a paramilitary organization that hunts and kills rogue dreamers, so they're the ideal people to put on the case if you think a dreamer is out of control. You're right that there is a PG police force, but it's likely the case that they are apprehensive about getting involved in what feels like disputes between rich people - too many opportunities to irritate power broker types. If they're looking it's a pro forma thing.

I see that you posted in the main thread! I will give Callista a chance to go and then post on my own. Probably won't be super active on RPNation during weekdays for the next week or so, we're having kind of a crazy moment at work.

YohhananArbuckle YohhananArbuckle Wait, does Callista live/work on Sand Elms?

Provisionally, yes. If you had different stuff in mind I can either edit or we can elide over those details... and sub in new details. I figured the neighborhood was pretty underdescribed so putting a name on it wasn't a big deal, apologies if that stomped on something you wanted to do.

Nah, it's totally fine, and I had no thoughts in mind. I just wasn't sure if that's what your post implied.

All good to know! Some things to play around with in future...
Mainly I was posting background/setting to get my foot in the door, as I'm guessing it'd be a little while longer before Vix's plot intersects with the rest of it.

Good luck with the work craziness! I'm not super active either, but am around to check on alerts and things.

Oh shoot, I just realized I've been setting everyone back with my slowness. I'll get it out in a bit, hopefully. Or at least by tomorrow. Sorry about that. I've been dawdling with my two paragraphs of text for no other reason than y'all intimidate me, yike.

Edit: Okay, I have posted. It's quite late, so I'm not sure if my info, grammar or whatever is totally off, so do tell me if I need to change something.
