Arc 2: Mysteries of the Past

Yuuki leapt back as a pair of golems tore free from their natural restraints. His golden hues rapidly studied the thin and weak metal plating that served at armor. He shifted his stance before lunging and drawing his sword, the blade hard to follow. Mifune Style: Flame Slice. Fire erupted from his sword as it carved through the armored chest, the golem staggering back a few steps before crashing to the ground. The genin ducked a swing from the second sentries fist. Even in its weakened state a blow to the head from that would be the end of it. Yuuki's blade snapped the knee of the golem, sending it tumbling to the ground with a satisfying thud. Yuuki leapt to his feet and drove his sword in the glowing 'eye' to finish it off.

The Jounin leapt back after Aokawa pulled the researchers to safety. From what she could see, these guards were mostly concentrated in the tunnel. Though there was still too much chakra in the air to get a clear count. One by one she watched her students and brother take down the strange machines. While time had weakened them greatly, she still enjoyed seeing the young Genin handle themselves rather well in the unusual battle.

As soon as the immediate area had been cleared, Tsubaki moved through the ruined golems to scout ahead. Only a few of the lumbering guards remained though for some reason it seemed their armor was in considerably better shape. Faster too, she noted while weaving through the numerous attempted blows. Sliding to a stop with her back facing a door that barely remained in place, she wove several hand signs. Lightning Style: False Darkness. Branching spears of lightning leapt from her hand, effectively destroying the heads of all five golemns.

"The path is clear," Tsubaki's voice crackled over the radio. Looks like it's time to see just what that well the guardians talked about was.

The two scientists shuffled back, Lauren carefully nudged Shinn over avoiding a trap on the floor pushing him and herself a bit back. The two quietly watched as the Shinobi were quick to act as the cloaked figures were swiftly handled. Her eyes kept locked forward keeping back as Shinn stood near her. "Just who the heck are they?" He asked just as one of the cloaked dolls turned jumping towards them running at the two. Lauren suddenly stepped her foot forward, reaching out as she pushed on a pressure pad causing the floor to suddenly start collapsing in, She pulled her foot back shuffling away just enough to avoid falling in the whole as the cloaked one suddenly fell into the pit falling down in a similar trap to the one Ayumu had discovered flying out to a seemingly endless drop.

The two kept back as all the cloaked figures were taken care of, a bit of a surprised look on both their faces as one of the foes laid before them, the cloak exposed revealing not a man but a strange looking target dummy.

What appeared to be meant to show where the eyes were a faint green glow appeared to fizzle out as the wooden dummy seemed to deactivate, laying as it was a few kunais pierced through it. Shinn's eyes fixating down noticing the etching in the wood staring at it from a distance, more so cautious knowing all the traps around them. "Hmmm... strange... its... somewhat similiar though its nothing I've seen before." He spoke looking forward glancing down the hallway. "I have a feeling there isn't going to be much ahead here... we should maybe finish sweeping it but I get the feeling this way is a decoy."  Lauren shrugged a bit. "I found it interesting. Wonder if yer buddy shinobi ran into these guys too."

Alice stood back watching quietly as they were suddenly assaulted looking in awe. She watched the puppet defend her looking on seemingly with childlike wonder. She finally witnessed as the puppet was moved behind her, covering her body acting as a shield  using its body and some certain cloth to cover her up. She could hardly believe what was going on, nor could hold back the excitement despite the danger these cloaked figures seemed to present them with. It was almost confirmation to her there would be plenty of juicy things for them to find out!

Seji flipped around kicking away one of the wooden dummies going for him. His eyes fixating ahead keeping a watch on Alice, moving forward a bit attempting to keep in close contact with his Genin. He minimized his influence, seeing the general attackers as being not as major of a threat to act fully himself. He wanted to make sure to let them shine only throwing one more kunai just in time to strike down another of the cloaked figures before it could get close to Alice. It didn't take too long for all their opponents to be taken out as Seji stood up tall, looking more relaxed though keeping alert.

"That be my lil' tadpoles. Show'in dem who is boss, these.... um... wooden guys..." He spoke as he pulled away the cloak seeing as he suspected it wasn't a human... granted he was still quite thrown back seeing what appeared to be some more complicated looking target dummy making him scratch at his temple.  His eyes glanced around a little bit puzzled how they had moved on their own, as far as he could tell there didn't seem to be someone else there controlling them, not to mention how independent they seemed to act.

It wasn't long before the commotion had settled Alice had popped out excitedly away from Jin's puppet. She smiled brightly lifting her hand up. "Way to go! You guys are awesome!" She spoke out excitedly not at all seeming to show any sign of fear or hesitation. She scurried ahead moving forward moving past Mochi and Kiso to the large door at the other side of the room. "They always got the biggest traps right before something good! Lets... go.... see!" She spoke pushing open the door as her face seemed to practically glow in excitement.

As the door opened wide it appeared almost unexciting to those who might not know better. It looked to be a simple office, a desk sitting near the back and what looked to be a sleeping place on the floor. A few strange objects were placed around the room. The room itself seemed rather... homely.... tranquel. It was a strange feeling even Alice could feel. It was, however, not the sensation of moving into the room but the large assortment of books and scrolls laying upon shelves sprawled around the area. They seemed in rather great condition given their age, although time had worn them down to some extent, Alice carefully shuffling through a few finding one that seemed to be in a good enough condition for her to at least hold without worry of it falling apart. She glanced through, a perplexed though excited look on her face.

"This.... this isn't the common language of that time... its quite similiar though I can sort of figure out a little of it... this is... AMAZING!" She spoke with a gleefull smile carefully shuffling through some pages having found a goldmine of information even if it wasn't something she could actually fully understand..

Dr. Lumen && Tueor

The golems all fell rather quickly, time being as much their enemy as the shinobi. As each and every one was destroyed, their eyes lost their glow, and the faint green glow returned to the room. They appeared to be be powered by the strange energy, that was not pure chakra, yet similar to it*.

In the next room, Lumen's gasp was heard yet again.

"This is amazing!"

Inside the room Ao had dropped them off at, a well was placed. It shined to the point it was nearly hard to look at. The energy that glowed from it, a dazzling green, spread out across the room in tendril, heading down every hallway. One tendril spread out, pointing at all the robots, before dissipating to become invisible. Lumen seemed mesmerized, walking slowly towards it. Tueor, though impressed, scanned the room for writing.

"This energy, it must be what lets all the plants grow throughout the temple. It gives them energy to live, replacing the sun. This... this is unbelievable. This is from a time before ninja, so it must be ninshu that does this. Why the impact of this could change the world. Imagine if we were able to replicate this."

Lumen was getting closer and closer to the well, before he reached his hand out at one such tendril.

"Is this chakra? Enough to be visible? Why, I don't know much about ninja, but I hear that is incredibly rare."

And he touched it. Immediately, something was wrong. His flesh seethed, swelling up on his arm, and becoming splotchy like a toad's skin. Lumen screamed horrible, echoing across the chamber, his eyes slowly changing as well. Where the splotches formed, stone soon followed.

* (It's Nature Energy, like the stuff for Sage Mode. Whole temple's powered by it. Also, nearly done people.)

Akihiro Tsubasha

Aki sighed, looking at his teacher, smirking. He pulled his scarf down, revealing his mouth, as his weapons now clanged against eachother. Karuy finally did appear, and quickly went on Aki's shoulder. Aki smiled, gently rubbing his head. "...Where have you been?..." Karuy looked at him, moving his hands all the while. "... I was joking you little scoundrel..." Karuy jumped down, looking towards the chamber, slowly walking towards it. It was an odd thing, but Aki kind of slowly moved towards it.

Then the scream came. "...I got this!..." He said to his teacher, starting to run, as did Karuy. From afar he could see the energy manifesting. Without saying a word, he pushed Lumen out of the way, him stumbling in front of it, as it enveloped Aki. For a moment, the energy felt like a slight tingly sensation, but then a sharp pain overcame Aki. His scream was louder than Lumen, as he gaped his mouth, holding his stomach. A tail briefly appeared, a puffy one, and his hair started to grow, along with a black shadow on his eyes. His teeth grew sharper, and his eyes became light brown, looking at Lumen, then at Tueor, growling.

But, the energy dissipated, and all the changes started to fade away, leaving Aki on his knees, gasping for air, and still holding his stomach, hunched over, as his eyes went back to normal. He was sweating, before he felt a paw across his face. "You baffon!" He had expected to be his teacher, or the other two, but looking, he only saw Karuy. Aki was now confused, and wanted to speak, but the tanuki slapped him again, then crossed its hands across his chest. "Ya should be thankful you didn't kill those guys! You fool!"

"...What the h-hell?..." Aki blinked a couple of times, as he taught he was haluccinating. He poked Karuy on his belly. It was a short break before Aki jumped back. "...Wh-What? What's- Are you?..." "Use your words kid! And, I am Tanukaba, one of the members of the Kanto Hill sage region, servants of Kazuhiko, the Tanuki Sage, you dunce!" Aki breathed a little, still looking confused, clearly shocked and appalled by this thing. "Now get up on your feet idiot! You're not that hurt!" Aki slowly nodded, raising up, stretching a little. Karuy- Well, Tanukaba, was right. It didn't feel that bad.

Conclusion

With the threat taken care of and the groups coming to their own of their small side trips through the temple, everyone met back together near the front. While one group had found itself in a relative dead end (fortunately with Ayumu found in one piece) the others had come back with more. Alice had a few of the more intact books in her possession, having been carefully wrapped up and tucked into her bag in order to minimize the risk of damage them. The third team had reported back the strange room filled with nature energy that had seemed to be producing the strange wooden puppets that had been defending the temple despite no sign of life at all within the complex. The team stayed the night, the Kemuri Shinobi keeping watch just incase any more surprises might be in the temple although the night was quite. The group finally left the next day, the team having found more then enough to fuel more funding for future expeditions.

Finding their way back to the village, the Scientists departed from the Shinobi, a quite upbeat Alice attempting to give nearly all of the Genin a hug (where she could manage to) with the rest of the team saying their farewells before the ninja were on their way back to Kemuri with a job well done... not to mention a decent amount of cash awaiting them for their arrival back at the village.
