|Personal Information|

Personality

Ansgar is a man who very much enjoys his privacy, and has a general distaste for humanity. He believes in the worst of many situations, and of human nature. There's not even a traumatic backstory for this, he's just one of those people who hates most other people. If he had his way, he'd just be left alone and never see anyone ever again. Barring Solfrid and Sofia. Those two can stay. Ansgar... doesn't have friends. Doesn't make them, doesn't want them. He doesn't even really have acquaintances, largely because he's rarely around other people, he's a little hard to approach, and even once you do, he's usually fairly abrasive, especially with his policy of honesty, especially when it comes to white lies. He doesn't believe in breaking things gently, figuring that hiding things from people who should know them only ever ends badly. He'd be the guy in the zombie apocalypse who got bitten and then immediately told everyone about it, rather than pretending it didn't happen, basically.

Despite this, he feels obliged to help people out at least every now and then, and once he commits himself to being your friend, you can count on him showing up to help you out in dire moments. He actually does have a softer side, which he only really fully opens up to his sister (as of now). He can be jokey, immature, and giggly, it just doesn't show all that often, nor does his dry, deadpan sense of humour, which is frequently rather grim and incredibly quick-witted. Rarely, that side of him slips out whether he wanted it to or not. He's also rather stubborn and hard to sway from a course once he decides to actually take that action or accomplish that goal, focusing easily and sharply on what's to hand. Also, he's probably never been in a relationship in his life, nor felt the desire to. He emotionally depends quite heavily on Solfrid and, at least a little, her approval. He's not sure what he'd do if Solfrid died, or went missing, or hated him.

Likes

Solfrid: Ansgar would quite literally kill or die for Solfrid, such is his loyalty to and liking for her. He may be sullen, stoic, terse, and jerkish to most other people, but he couldn't possibly do that to Solfrid if he tried. Just her mere presence draws him out of his shell at least a little, even before she starts pulling him from it. It's probably been years since Ansgar's even been angry at Solfrid.

Solitude: Ansgar far prefers to be on his own or just with his closest circle (Solfrid and only Solfrid, at this point) rather than out with other people and socialising. He can semi-frequently be found brooding about something. Of course, Solfrid pretty much never lets him do this, when she's around. She's mean.

Training: Like the freak he is, Ansgar actually enjoys his exercise and training. How he does so is a mystery to me, but he enjoys it. Maybe because it lets him be away from people, except his ever-present sister, when she feels like heckling him. She's not just mean, she's a dork.

Loyalty: Ansgar is loyal, and he expects the same in return. Not just towards him, but between other people. For example, he would look more unfavourably than the 'average' person would on someone if they cheated on their spouse, or if they betrayed a friend. Breaking a deal, oath, or promise is close to the lowest anyone can sink, in his eyes.

Dislikes

Religions: Ansgar dislikes how hypocritical, exploitative, and authoritarian many religions can be, and how people often get 'pushed' into joining this religion, either by upbringing or by 'conversion'. This does, of course, somewhat conflict with his nature as living, literal proof that some religions are actually true and worth following. He broods on this a lot.

Lemons: Not much to expand on, here. Ansgar fucking hates lemons and how they taste with every fiber of his being. Anyone eating lemons is branded a known lemon-sympathiser.

Driving: Ansgar detests having to drive, much preferring to let others do it, like Solfrid. And she enjoys it, so that's a win-win. If forced to drive, the badass warrior-monk drives... like a grandma with arthritis. He's extremely cautious, and repeatedly expresses that he'd rather be on his own two feet, feeling safer there. He's more than happy to be in the car while someone else is being a daredevil, though. Part actual enjoyment and part Stockholm Syndrome from being in the same car as his sister so much.

Alcohol: Alcohol has never appealed to Ansgar. He's never gotten why people like it so much, when it turns them into idiots. He tried it once, and immediately spat it back out. As a result, he also looks down on alcoholics. He won't rail against it, but he'll quietly disapprove.

Being mistaken for a couple: Since Solfrid and he looks so different, and given how close and young-looking they are, the two of them are often mistaken for a couple by those who don't know they're siblings, or once even by someone who knew they were siblings. Solfrid may be able to laugh it off, play it up, and make a joke of it, but Ansgar has to hold back anger every now and then, because he's tired of it and has been almost from the start. He holds it in more for Solfrid's benefit than anyone else's.

Guns: It's a personal thing, Ansgar doesn't like guns. Not for pacifistic reasons, either. For reasons of how impersonal they are. If he's going to fight someone, he wants to be up close and in their face.

Goals

His own and Solfrid's safety and happiness. If necessary, Sofrid's before his own.

A peaceful life.

Fears

That he might lose Solfrid, either through death, detachment, or a fallout. Especially if it's through a failing of his own. And you can be sure he'll find some way to attribute it to his own failing.

Strengths

Incredibly brave, doesn't take things and people at face value/always suspicious/hard to con or fool, very good at focusing on things

Weaknesses

Dislikes people and is generally alone, intensely protective of Solfrid, too honest and honourable for his own good, deaf

Background

Ansgar was born deaf. His mother was the daughter of a multi-millionaire businessman who was a Norwegian immigrant, and his father was something Ansgar never knew much about, only that he was apparently called Jurgen Hronnson, worked as a government cryptologist, and acted a little paranoid. Apparently, he was right to do so, as he was found stabbed to death in a back alley eight months after Ansgar's birth. In reality, Jurgen was Heimdall, who had been called back to the Overworld Asgard for reasons that I am not going to disclose. (OoooOOOoh, plot) Sofia persevered, however, and raised Ansgar on his own. Not particularly difficult, given the wealth of Sofia's upbringing. A few days after his first birthday, he had a cochlear implant put in. Life passed normally until about four years later, when Sofia remarried to Harold Solberg, a handsome actor, philanthropist, volunteer fireman, and all-round good guy. He had a surprisingly small fanbase, and this marriage was relatively quiet.

Harold only stayed long enough to give Sofia another child before he never made it home one day, a couple of years after the child's birth. This child is, of course, Solfrid. In Harold's will, he left all of his possessions to Sofia, even if she didn't really need it. Ansgar took an immediate liking to Solfrid, and through her own childhood acted every bit the older brother protector. As for himself, he liked to stay mostly out of the public eye and away from other people, although he quickly took an interest in various physical activities, such as rock climbing, parkour, a variety of martial arts, abseiling, skydiving, jogging, and a few various others. He tried skateboarding once, but ended up sucking extraordinarily at it. He likes to pretend that never happened. Because it didn't. Absolutely not. Solfrid's lying to you.

In school, Ansgar did... well... let's just say he successfully achieve mediocrity and leave it at that. He didn't do so great in academic studies, because he didn't put in as much effort as he should've, but he excelled on the sports side of things. At one point, he'd been picked to be a Quarterback for his high school's team, but he was dropped because he couldn't effectively lead and communicate with the team. His quick wit, good looks, and physical activity won him plenty of admirers, but he brushed all of that aside, too focused and disinterested to get involved with that. At this point, despite his focus, he didn't really have a goal in mind. He had no idea what to do, other than look after Solfrid. After school, he didn't go into uni/college, instead spending all his time focusing in on his hobbies. At some point also, he decided against keeping the cochlear implant, preferring to embrace his deafness. It took him time to actually adjust to this, but it worked out in the end. From his time with hearing, he could speak both English and Norwegian, since it'd been a family tradition to keep up speaking their 'native' language. It took him years, but he learned to lipread. In fact, he'd gotten good enough at it that he could still carry on a conversation as though he were not, in fact, deaf.

Regardless, things changed when Ansgar was about 30. A fire giant broke into their country home with a veritable army of thralls, who managed to drag Ansgar, Solfrid, and Sofia out of bed and into the main entrance hall. There the giant had them bound and laid out on the floor, chanting out of a book and preparing a knife to sacrifice the three for some purpose. Out of the blue, a rainbow streaked out from the ceiling and down around the three. Out from the rainbow stepped two men, one blond and one a dark brunet. Sofia immediately recognised them as Harold and Jorgen, respectively. The two wielded swords, and swiftly struck down the giant and his thralls, before freeing the three. Together, the two explained that they were Baldur and Heimdall, granted Ansgar and Solfrid their birthrights, explained their natures to them, and gave them a location to be at in about four years. Then they stepped back into the rainbow, which Heimdall explained to be the Bifrost, and left.

After this, Ansgar's activity only increased in intensity, and he redoubled his martial training, spurred by recent events. Ansgar's attachment to Solfrid also grew, and at times he seemed like a second shadow to her, partially from paranoia that something would happen to her when she wasn't with him. When the time came, the two packed up some stuff, chose one of Solfrid's cars, and set out to Skirnir's Diner.

A dwarf-forged set of metal escrima sticks that can lock together to become a very short staff. They can also extend to double their length. Incredibly durable, and with a slightly blue tinge. It was an unusual request, but Heimdall knew Ansgar's training well enough to know that'd be the weapon best suited to him. They have runes to always return to Ansgar's hands if thrown or lost, and to strike harder than they physically should.

A completely blank, featureless mask made of eternally polished steel, perfectly smooth and almost entirely impervious to damage. It is rounded rather than flat, looking something like an oval-ish orb. This mask was made by Brokkr and Eitri, the legendary creators of Mjolnir, Gullinbursti, and Draupnir. It can be fitted to anyone, automatically resizing to perfectly fit them. It can be breathed through as though it were not there, though protects against any harmful airborne toxins or diseases, and can be seen through, smelled through, and heard through (too bad Ansgar can't use this), but only the hearing works both ways. This mask supposedly has many effects, but Ansgar may only access two.

Firstly, the wearer can choose to enter a sleep state, acting as though asleep, but going through the process in about an hour, maybe more and maybe less depending on the level of fatigue, awaking as though a full and restful sleep was had. However, nothing can rouse the wearer from this sleep before its completion. This is to reflect Ansgar's driven nature. Secondly, the wearer may occasionally react instinctively to physical danger a half-second or so before it presents itself, if the wearer is not aware of it.

Likes

Ansgar: Solfrid's first and truest companion in life has always been Ansgar. There's almost nothing she wouldn't do for Ansgar, although 'leave me the frack alone, sis' isn't one of them, nor is 'stop trying to give me friends, you great, blonde, dork'.

Trivia: Solfrid is a bit of a purveyor of trivia, having spent long afternoons by googling and reading up on obscure things 'just in case'. If you need to know what M&Ms stands for, she's your gal. Same if you need to know why Lyme disease is called that.

Grapes: It's a weird choice, but Solfrid would rather eat a whole bunch of grapes than pretty much any other fruit. And she's almost conditioned her brother into enjoying them as much as she does.

Compassion: Solfrid is, by nature, an incredibly kind, caring, and giving person, and she likes this quality in others. She often tries to convince others to show more compassion in their lives, mostly through example, although she won't hesitate to verbally put down people that show unnecessary cruelty.

Cars: Solfrid drives, and she drives fast. Fortunately, she's got the skills to handle herself on the road, so nobody's life is really at danger. That's what she says, anyway. She's more than aware that everyone is capable of making mistakes, even herself, so she's skilled at not just dangerously driving, but skirting the edge of thrilling driving while actually giving herself and other drivers (mostly other drivers) enough room for error.

Dislikes

Unnecessary force: Solfrid is a big proponent of reasonable escalation of force, and doesn't like it when people jump straight to shooting everyone, even if they're trying to beat you. Once that gun is pulled, however, she feels justified in stabbing the wielder in the gut, since they escalated first. Unlike many who stick to this, she doesn't take loopholes in this.

"Pragmatism": Don't mistake this, Solfrid has no problem with actual pragmatics. It's just those who hide behind this 'for the greater good' and such mentality to try and excuse their own actions and choices that she takes issue with. She doesn't give a damn if you're fighting against Hitler, you don't just shoot prisoners and make a mockery of the Geneva Conventions, then argue that because the enemy is literally Hitler, it's alright.

Dishonesty: It doesn't really matter to Solfrid what sort of lie you told her, it's a principle. She doesn't lie to you, and expects you to not lie back to her. Of course, it's not an equal judgement; a little white lie ranks lower than someone not holding up their end of a bargain. She also extends this to people who hide behind labels to excuse their behavior or give it an outlet or some such. For example, her especially strong manifestation of this, the aforementioned hatred for "pragmatism" and "for the greater good".

Pop music: Personally, Solfrid (and Ansgar, actually, before he got the cochlear implant removed) dislike most of the most popular and mainstream songs, less out of being a 'hipster' and more because she just legitimately doesn't like the style.

Goals

To add as much and take away as little from the world as possible in any way she can.

The safekeeping of her family (and friends, to a lesser extent).

Proving herself worthy of her abilities.

On a lower scale, getting her brother a friend or, through some miracle, a partner.

Fears

That Ansgar will lose his way and become too dark for her to willingly follow and support. Damned if she'll acknowledge it if he ever reaches that point, though, unless it is ridiculously obvious.

That she'll die having not done enough for the world.

Strengths

Very likable and kind 'n shit, deceptively not just a pretty face and actually very good at numbers and finances, rather genre-savvy and possesses a strange amount of common sense

Weaknesses

Too honest, her looks can often attract unwanted attention that has to get 'dissuaded' by Ansgar, sometimes unwilling to do what needs to be done

A coin that changes form every time it leaves the sight of anyone, between coins from the past, present, or future, very occasionally from other timelines. Anything from an old shilling from the era of King James I, a New Zealand ten cent coin minted a month ago, a German 2 Euro coin minted in three years, to a 25 Dinar with the face of Emperor Julius XXIV of New Rome minted in 6525 AD. No matter what form it is in, Solfrid can always tell that it's her coin when she holds or sees it. She may also dictate exactly how it lands when flipped, even if the position is against all physics, such as balancing on one corner of the edge.

A medium-sized seax that could be dated to around the 8th Century AD, although it's in near-perfect condition (its blade is a little notched) and has a disc-shaped pommel with a stylised rendition of the sun on one side and the face of Baldur on the other. This pommel is made of gold, and has a strange habit of avoiding the worst of the damage or dirtying that the dagger undergoes.
