Bio: Born in Birmingham, England to an Italian immigrant and her abusive English husband: Andrew Albert Pickens, or as he was known back then: Alberto Peterson was a self made man from the very beginning. His father had left him and his family when Alberto, was just a young boy in search of work in the new world of America and as such his mother was left alone to protect and provide for four young children in a country whose language she barely spoke. Due to this abandonment and a lack of family wealth, Al never received a formal education like most of the boys his age and was exclusively home schooled by his mother, thus learning a very alternate view of the world to that taught in the conventional English classroom.
Peterson worked many jobs in his early years, mostly serving a manual labourer for dangerous and unlicensed contractors so that he could keep food on the table and clothes on his back, though the nature of these jobs made them very volatile and a highly unstable source of income. A lack of stable employment was what led, the newly dubbed Andrew Pickens (who had changed his name to avoid the discrimination that came with his immigrant background) to sign up for His Majesty's armed forces, where he would serve as a member of the British Cavalry. Andrew proved to be an exceptional soldier, perhaps in part due to the affinity for violence that had been birthed from years of poverty and neglect and he was swiftly sent off to the colonies of South Africa to help subdue the uprising of the Boer rebels where he would remain for three years of his life.
Despite initial intentions to use his army salary to pay for the food and accommodation of those that he left behind, Andrew never had much contact with his family whilst overseas and upon his return to England he found that much had changed in his absence. Andrew had spent not two months away when his mother had been shot by an unknown perpetrator, something he would later find out was a result of her inability to pay for the drugs that she had been living off of for half of his adult life. His siblings were in no better state: his younger brothers had got themselves into a rough crowd after their mother's death and in order to provide for the family his only sister was forced to sell her own body just to make ends meet. Seeing his family in such a sorry state Andrew was appalled: he ruled that no member of his family would live in poverty again and using the remainder of his soldier's salary he purchased four ticket to New York, USA.
America promised a new life for the Pickens family and it was even revealed that they had family that they had never before met working within the area who were more than happy to find work for their cousins. Andrew became a bodyguard for a Mr. Michael Goldenweiser a businessman with a less than stellar reputation who was using his many hotels as a scheme to launder money among other illegal activities. Andrew tolerated the man for a time, using his experience as a soldier to protect him for almost five years, though as time progressed his patience with the man began to wain as too did his ambition grow.
If one were to ask Andrew Pickens who it was that had shot his charge in the chest during his annual trip to the races he would claim ignorance of the matter, however what he did know was that Michael had for some reason or another decided that he should be the sole inheritor of the Goldenweiser estate and all that came with it. There would descent at first, and a little bit of treachery, but over the course of the next few years Pickens would mold Goldenweiser's old organisation in his own image creating a criminal empire that would last a thousand years, or so he thought.
More recently cracks have begun to pop up in his empire, the Great War had taken a lot from the world but from Andrew Pickens it had taken more, almost all of his men had conscripted, along with Pickens himself, though only around half of them came back, leaving any wholes that have yet to be filled. Before the war Andrew's brother-in-law Stanley Godwin had served as mayor of New York City giving him a certain degree of control over the city's politics however his inability to deal with the rampant gang problem had left him unpopular in the eyes of the masses and as election day grows ever closer Godwin has begun to distance himself from the family operations. Even his own blood were beginning to conspire behind his back, for they thought Andrew had grown complacent during the war years, and that he should step down for a younger more capable leader of the family business. Despite all of this Pickens remains steadfast in his ambitions and intend to retain control of the city no matter the cost.
