Standing there sheepishly, Atlas seemed to calm down a little upon being reassured. "That's good to hear... w-well not good! of course, I mean school is important-- um- I'm just saying I'm glad I'm not the odd one out. That.. would be miserable" he fumbled over his words a little, gee, he really wasn't good at this."But I really would appreciate the help! you two are very nice." He smiled and went on to say more, but joy began to fly off. He seemed confused and watched as she approached another small group of people. Shrugging he turned to Jordan.

"haha.. yeah yeah-- that makes sense. I really hate coming off rude though- it seems nowadays anything will ruffle someones feathers-" He scratched his head, a small yawn leaving his mouth as he thought about he previous times he's gotten reprimanded for disrespect. He looked at Jordan again, quietly listening to her until she asked him a question. "ooh- well all those things do sound fun. Hm.. well I do enjoy being outside, especially at night when all the stars are out! you know-- I have books on basically all the recorded constellations- oh! I love books, and bugs- and-- Hmm, I do like baking too I suppose..--"

He stopped himself and Jordan could see his eyes pause as he thought about something. "Wait hey- you like books? I really love books! Oh you'd love to see my collection of books, I have basically everything! awh.. darn I would have loved to take all my books here." as he ranted about his love for books he hadn't realized he began flying upward a little. he was excited to possibly find someone into books just as much as he was. or- well even a little would be fine too.

Jordan - Outside the School Gates - Mentions: _Yua Watanabe_ _Yua Watanabe_ (Atlas)

She grinned as she looked up at Atlas, rising slowly above the ground. His excitement was mirrored in her, and she bounced on her heels.

“Yes! I love books! I mean, among other things too, of course. You should see my book collection! It’s probably not as extensive as yours by any means, but either way, you should totally make sure you come to book club! It’s a really special place. I’m sure you’ll find a whole lot of people to connect with there! We’d love to have you. We meet in the Library, which is a really special place itself. You should definitely check it out when you get the time. It’s like a whole different realm in there, I’m looking forward to hearing about what it looks like for you! You’ll have to tell me! That’s one of my favorite things about the Library, I spend so much of my time just listening to people and their experiences with it, but it’s one thing to hear about it and imagine what it’s like, and a whole other thing to experience it! Sometimes I dream about getting lost among the shelves listening to the books whisper their own stories, and wandering across groups of people discussing their own stories, and even the Library relaying in a hushed tone its own story, and all the stories blend into one within the room and it’s so full, so relaxing, and so complete.”

She rambled on in one long paragraph of text, evidently having a lot to say about this one subject. That wasn’t all she had to say, but she had come across a slow point in her speech, in which she reflected and realized that she had chattered on far long enough and should say something more constructive and direct.

“Have you heard anything about the Library before coming here?” She asked.

Keefe - Running At the School Gates at a Less Worrying Speed - Mentions: EmilySmith EmilySmith (CJ) & clementinn clementinn (Devan)

Keefe snorted a laugh at Devan’s immediate jump into action, and he didn’t intend to follow after him, but CJ’s comment only brought back his worries. He couldn’t let Devan fall, what if he got injured and had to sit around all sad with a broken leg!

“Good point CJ! I bet ten dollars I’ll catch him and save his life!” He grinned at the girl then took off running himself. “Don’t worry bro! I’ll keep you safe!” He called wildly, a grin of pure joy on his face. Keefe nearly knocked over some smaller kid in his sprint, and was forced to practically leap over the kid in order to not bowl the poor one into the ground, but it didn’t serve as a deterrent, he just called back a quick “Sorry!” and hurried on to be at the base of the gate on the off chance Devan were to slip and fall.

George - Right Beside the School Gates - Mentions: Silent Child Silent Child (Berry) & clementinn clementinn (Geode & Fern)

George nodded as Berry spoke, and distantly engaged expression on his face. It was interesting, yes, but it seemed he was more aware of what was happening with Fern and Geode. He had nothing to add on the fact of nature and leaves and that stuff, but he did have something to say about Fern.

“Hey… don’t you think you should let her go?” He said directly to Geode, a sort of challenge underlining his tone. “Aren’t you being a little… controlling? Fern was doing alright before, and she’s going to be alone in her classes. You aren’t going to be one of those weird kids who won’t let his sister hang out with her friends, are you? She can stand at least, can’t she?”

Soren - Hiding a Good Distance Away From the Crowd - Mentions from a distance: Takeo, Agrona, and Joy

He was still glaring darkly at everything. Yes, still. He’d paced a few steps around, but mostly he stood where he was and watched everything. He was taking it all in making quick judgements. The judgements were rather simple: avoid that person, that person looked scary, that person looked like they needed their head dunked under water, this person looked in his direction so he needed to watch his back, those people were loud, and everyone as a whole was plain and simply bad.

He wanted something to do—or something to purposefully not do—and he absolutely hated this waiting. It just kept dragging on and on and on and on and the longer he waited the more he wanted to be anywhere but here. Waiting. His hands were itching to do something, and the only thing that kept him from lashing out at a random student when they walked too close was the fact that his arms were crossed tightly across his chest and his glare seemed sufficient enough.

There was one commotion among the students that caught his eye the most. A haughty self-important idiot had approached a frightened flimsy-looking guy and started a rather apparent nerve-wracking interaction. Soren couldn’t help but watch from the trees. Shortly after a fluttering good-girl joined, and the duo became a trio of skin-crawling confrontational, nit-picking, and annoying children who decided for themselves that they were worth something. Or perhaps it was only two of those people and the other poor guy got trapped in the middle. Either way, whoever they were, whatever they were doing, he was watching them. Perhaps he would just curious to see how it would play out.

Joy- Outside the School Gates- Silent Child Silent Child (Agrona) RIP Mint

"And as for you-" She switched her focus on a dime, seemingly unable to keep her attention in one place now that she was all riled up. She turned back to Agrona and pointed a very aggressive, accusatory finger at him. Her sense of- possibly very misplaced- justice seemed to boil over with every word. Agrona hadn't even spoken to her yet, and she'd already decided it was her responsibility to handle this perceived threat to the peace of the Academy.

"I don't know who you think you are, but you have no right to pick on him!" Despite her small frame, she carried enough passion for several people. It blinded her to any trouble she might've been getting herself into. "We're all misfits here, okay? You're not better just because he's nervous."

Devan- On the gates - EmilySmith EmilySmith (CJ) Northe Northe (Keefe) (Mentions Jordan and Atlas)

He nearly ran right into a couple of younger kids, an Avian boy and a Weredog girl. "Woops! My bad! Lemme just get past ya-"

He stopped just outside the gates and stared up at them. They were a lot taller up close. Didn't matter, he was still convinced that he could do it. He shot one last mischievous grin at his friends, and hoisted himself up.

Geode & Fern- Right Outside the School Gates- Northe Northe (George) Silent Child Silent Child (Berry)

"Hm? Oh- she's fine, I guess she can stand-" Geode folded to the challenge pretty quickly and set her down, but he didn't take his hands away until after he'd fixed her braids and adjusted her clothes a little. "I guess I'm just worried about her after last year's... uh... that. I'm her brother, it's my job to keep her safe, y'know?"

"I was safe..." Fern mumbled under her breath.

Cassandra Jones
(Watching Devan)

CJ rolls her eyes when he jumped across the gates before leaning her head on a wall, "These two of my best friends are dumbasses." She mutters looking at Keefe and Devan as they ran.

『 TAGS 』 Northe Northe (Jordan) (Mentions Devan)

Staring down at Jordan he chirped with joy, heck finding someone with an interest of boring books? here? well while it isn't that surprising his expectations wasn't the highest either. he sat there listening to her ramble intently. he enjoyed having someone to ramble too- or listen to ramble. "Library? you guys have a library-- oh my well I, figured but you make this one in particular sound really cool! i-ive never been to a real library before! i- did find an old library rule book around an old park though- the guidebook made them sound pretty boring- I haven't heard much of anything upon coming here. My grandpa simply ushered me to any place that would accept me. my community it pretty tight-nit soo- unless one person hears about anything, none of the village will."

He explained. he went to say more but quickly backed flew backwards, forcing himself to land as some kid flew passed them. Atlas's attention moved to 'Devan' instead, his face contorting into one of confusion to shock. "..For an infernal without wings he seems to be taking a pretty big risk. He's.. pretty big too-- he might really break something if he of all people fall-" Looking at Jordan he pointed. "Um- is he, nice? do you know those guys?" He seemed worried, but didn't want to outwardly say that, afraid he might come off as too overbearing. He's never talked to any other infernal besides his family, so he seemed nervous about wanting to even dare say anything.

    – Outside the School Gates

Berry - Right Outside the School Gates

Berry watched the interaction unfold, his wings twitching slightly as George challenged Geode. The tension was subtle, but it was there. He hadn’t expected George to be so direct, and part of him worried that it might escalate into something uncomfortable.

His gaze flicked to Fern, who still radiated excitement despite being held in place by her brother. Berry understood overprotectiveness—he’d seen it before, felt it before—but there was something about the way Geode handled Fern that made Berry uneasy. Not that he thought Geode meant any harm; it just seemed like he was trying too hard to protect something that didn’t need protecting.

Berry stayed quiet as Geode hesitated, then eventually relented and set Fern down. He kept his hands on her for a moment longer, adjusting her clothes and fixing her braids with a sort of nervous energy. When he spoke again, there was a weight to his words.

"Last year’s… that?" Berry didn’t repeat it aloud, but the way Geode trailed off stuck with him. What exactly had happened last year?

Fern’s quiet protest tugged at his attention, and Berry glanced at her, expression softening. “You seem like you can take care of yourself,” he said gently, offering her a small, encouraging smile. “You were just telling us about how excited you are for your classes, right? And the Library.”

Jordan - Outside the School Gates - Mentions: _Yua Watanabe_ _Yua Watanabe_ (Altas), Devan, Keefe, & CJ

Jordan ducked and stepped to the side, turning her gaze up to watch Devan. It wasn’t hard to find Keefe sprinting to catch up and CJ nearby looking disappointed. Sometimes she felt bad for that girl. CJ was so nice, Jordan didn’t understand why she insisted on hanging out with those rough guys.

“That’s Devan, he’s nice enough. I don’t know him that well, he’s one of those ‘sports guys’. And… as you can see… yeah… that’s him… climbing the school gates.” She sighed, observing his ascent. She wondered if Joy was seeing this yet and if she was about to flutter up to the infernal and demand he quit fooling around. “That whole group is nice, if you’re ever in need of help or something, none of them are criminals or anything.” She gestured at Keefe as he charged over and was shouting something about catching ‘Dev’ if he fell.

“That’s CJ.” She pointed at the girl. “She’s really nice, and a lot more accommodating than those two loud-mouths. You should say ‘hi’ to them sometime, introduce yourself. They’re a lot better than some kids here.”

Keefe - Standing beneath Devan - clementinn clementinn (Devan) & EmilySmith EmilySmith (CJ)

“I got you Dev!” Keefe called, finally taking his place in the splash zone where Devan might fall. But… Devan was climbing alarmingly fast, and Keefe felt a sinking feeling, realizing he might just lose some money on this bet, or possibly that maybe the whole thing was a stupid idea.

There wasn’t any sign of that inner feeling, as he was grinning as widely as ever, his arms extended up towards Devan and his little white wings flip-flapping in excitement. He was Dev’s spotter, and would jump to catch him before he fell. He did, for a moment, look down to grin at CJ, snickering softly at her face.

George - Right Beside the School Gates - Silent Child Silent Child (Berry) & clementinn clementinn (Fern & Geode)

George nodded at Geode in a way that said ‘yeah, that’s what I thought, weirdo brother’. He didn’t offer any other contributions to the conversation, believing his role to have been done for now. Besides, he didn’t really feel like he wanted to engage in conversation with these people anymore, especially not Geode. His gaze wandered away aimlessly, tuning them out for a little bit as he watched a strange event occurring nearby, some older kids he recognized causing a disturbance.

The Academy

The students would have to wait no longer. With the first toll of the bells of the school year, the gates to the school finally began to open.

The open gates revealed the courtyard, decorated with bushes and benches around a crescent-shaped pond that reflected the blue morning glow of the sky. A statue sat a ways behind it, a faceless, nameless depiction of a figure in a long robe with their arms out in a welcoming pose. Behind that, the stairs into the building where the future of the students awaited.

Joy- Outside the School Gates- Silent Child Silent Child (Agrona)

She looked like she might explode.

Her face had flushed with a deeper red, highlighting her freckles and making her look like a little strawberry that was ripened on sheer rage. He was even more insufferable than she'd expected. Just hearing his voice, as rich and melodic as it was, felt like pins and needles down her spine. She just couldn't stand it.

The smug lilt in his voice. The overly fancy language that he used. The taunting. It was like he was daring her to do something about it herself instead of relying on the safety of the adults, and she could not resist. He was winning, and she couldn't let that happen.

She waited for Takeo to speak up, and when he didn't, she took things into her own hands. She steadied her hands in front of her and let the patterns of her wings light up as she prepared a spell. She'd show him what she could do about it-

The bells tolled, and she froze. The light from the spell she had been preparing died. Her hands clenched into fists, and she glanced between Agrona and the gates. She could either stick around and win this debate or join the rest of the student body. Her choice was clear. She let out a frustrated shout and swiftly flew off to find Jordan again, she would not let her reputation of punctuality and perfection be spoiled on the first day.

Devan- On the school gates- Northe Northe (Keefe) EmilySmith EmilySmith (CJ)

"Keefe, dude, I'm fine! I'm not gonna-"

He probably could have made it over, he had the athletic ability, but the loud sound of the bells and the gates suddenly opening with him still clinging to them had caught him off guard, and his foot slipped.

Geode & Fern- Right outside the school gates- Northe Northe (George) Silent Child Silent Child (Berry)

Geode let out a sigh of relief when the gates opened. As much as he liked being out in nature, the idea of getting inside to the safety of the Academy building was comforting. He felt as if the obvious tension in the air had finally dispersed as the focus of the crowd of students shifted to going inside. He visibly dropped his shoulders a bit.

Fern's energy quickly returned. She tried to be the first one to squeeze through even the slightest gap between the gates, only to be stopped by a quick hand on her shoulder from her brother. He pulled her back.

"Careful! It's easy to get lost in the Academy, I don't want you running off alone!"

"I won't!" She hurried over to George and took hold of his sleeve, already considering him close enough of a friend to do that despite knowing him for maybe fifteen minutes. "I'm not alone!"

"Fern-"

"I'll be safe! Okay bye!" She pulled George in through the gates with her and disappeared into the crowd.

Geode took a very deep breath and shot a nervous glance to Berry. "It's fine... she'll be fine... um- you're new, you can follow me if you want?"

    – Entering the School Gates

Berry watched as Fern all but dragged George into the crowd, her excitement practically radiating off her. He couldn't help but smile a little. She was definitely the type to rush headfirst into things without hesitation.

His gaze shifted to Geode, who was clearly trying to convince himself that everything was fine. Berry wasn’t sure how much he believed that, but he wasn’t about to argue. Instead, he nodded.

“Yeah, that’d be helpful.” He glanced toward the gates, where students were flowing into the Academy. “I get the feeling getting lost here is easier than it looks.”

As he walked beside Geode, Berry glanced up at him. “So… you were here last year?” He kept his voice casual, though he was still thinking about that unfinished sentence from before. He wasn’t sure if Geode would answer, but maybe he’d say something about what ‘that’ was.

Even as he spoke, Berry’s wings twitched slightly. The energy around them had shifted—excitement, nerves, anticipation. The start of something new. He exhaled quietly and adjusted his bag, following Geode into the Academy.

Interactions: clementinn clementinn (Fern, Geode), Northe Northe (George)

Soren - Approaching the School - Mentions: No One

Soren actually felt a little bit of relief when the bells tolled and the gates finally opened. The crowd was moving, and then they’d disperse into their classes, and everything would be familiar once more. He was in no rush to enter though, only the silly kids who thought reputation and making names were important ever went in first. That wasn’t Soren. He couldn’t be last either, he’d made that mistake once already. He was going to wait until he could sneak inside hidden among a small crowd and find his own way on the grounds.

That left him lurking still. He approached a little closer, keeping his arms crossed as he waited, his eyes darting around quickly and anxiously. He kept asking himself whether now was good time or not. He couldn’t decide. He chose to wait longer. He could wait. It was better than getting caught in the stampede.

Jordan - Entering the School - Mentions: _Yua Watanabe_ _Yua Watanabe_ (Atlas) & clementinn clementinn (Joy)

Jordan gasped as the gates opened. Her eyes glimmered brightly and she bounced in excitement. She looked at Atlas, grinning. “Come on! Stick with me, Joy’ll find us soon, there’s no way she’ll let herself be late!”

Even as she was saying that she caught sight of Joy over the crowd. Jordan jumped up on her toes and waved her hands wildly. “Joy! Over here! Come on!”

She then waved to Atlas, gesturing him to follow. “She’ll catch up! Let’s go!” She hurried off, her excitement too great to contain. She turned back and continued waving at both Atlas and Joy.

Jackson - Entering the School - Mentions: ur mom lol(JK—it’s No One)

Jackson, still hovering somewhere in the world, slunk his way into the school like a prowling cat and vanished somewhere off to the left, neglecting to go wherever he should’ve been going. His gaze lingered on the crowds as he left, but he had enough of people for a while.

Keefe - At the School Gates - Mentions: clementinn clementinn (Devan) & EmilySmith EmilySmith (CJ)

“Dev!” Keefe quite literally screamed his bro’s name, his little wings flapping wildly as he reached up and jumped, grabbing hold of Devan before he could fall. Unfortunately, even if Devan was still holding into the gate, Keefe was about to pull him right off. “I got you Dev!” Keefe declared.

George - Following Fern - Mentions: clementinn clementinn (Fern & Geode) & Silent Child Silent Child (Berry)

George was a little shocked initially, but he didn’t resist as Fern pulled him through the gates. He did look back at the others two and wave, perhaps a little tauntingly. His smile might’ve been genuine, or it was a grin of triumph at the older brother who couldn’t control his little sister.

He hurried to keep up with the girl, doing his best to not fall behind or lose her in the crowd. “I can’t believe the gates are finally open!” He laughed lightly. “Listen! We’re gonna have so much fun, I know my way around, come on, let’s go this way, it’s faster and maybe we can break through the crowd.”

He grabbed her hand in return and picked up his steps to lead, masterfully shoving and weaving through the crowd. He was careful she never fell behind though. Soon, the two of them made it just about to the front of the crowd. George nearly tripped as he tried to bound up the stairs in a rush.

CJ gasped and sighed in amazement when Keefe caught Devan. She walked over to them with a 'I told you' face. "See! This was as dangerous as I said." She said looking at the both sternly and as eyeroll.

The Academy

As the students filtered from the gates, to the courtyard, to up the steps and into the Great Hall, professors and staff members made sure to herd the students in the correct direction. First years were encouraged to sit near the front so they could hear better when the Headmaster himself gave his beginning of the year announcements.

The Great Hall was a dim, expansive room only illuminated by the windows near the main door and the candles that lined the tables. Dark stone bricks made up the floor, the walls, and the pillars that stood in the middle to hold the ceiling of such a gigantic room. Banners with the school's symbol decorated the pillars and bricks, welcoming students new and old.

A few of these banners and tapestries had always been there, previous students would have known that, but they also would have noticed that there were far more of them than had been there the previous year. A closer look would have revealed the damage done to the bricks from last year's incident that the school was trying to cover up. Must not have had time to repair everything before class rolled around...

Fern- Front of the Great Hall- Northe Northe (George)

Fern only slowed down once she got inside, stopping to take everything in. She wasn't a particularly tall child, and the greatness of the room only seemed to shrink her in comparison. Her eyes reflected the candlelight.

Then, she gathered herself once more, and tugged on George's hand again as she squeezed through the crowd to get to the front of the room just as she had been directed. "Is it like this every year? What's the Headmaster like? What are these papers-"

Geode- Hanging behind everyone- Silent Child Silent Child (Berry)

He nodded, a little awkwardly. "Y-yeah, I was here last year. I've been attending for a few years now. It's kinda weird here, but you get used to it after a while."

He kept messing with his clothes. He nearly fell a few times when someone knocked into him or he simply tripped over his own feet, he was like a stack of twigs that could be blown over by a gust of wind. He managed to stay upright, barely, but he kept his head low and his limbs tucked in close to his torso.

"Um- my dad is actually a professor here. I don't know if I've mentioned that yet- but yeah. I know a lot about how things work at the Academy, so if you have questions about a-anything at all, I'm happy to answer them."

Joy- At a table in the Great Hall- Northe Northe (Jordan) _Yua Watanabe_ _Yua Watanabe_ (Atlas)

It took Joy a little bit to find her people in the crowd. Even with her ability to fly over everyone's heads, when everyone was a misfit, it was hard for anyone to really stand out. On top of that, she had one more thing she planned to do.

When she fluttered into the Great Hall, ahead of everyone else, she didn't follow the rest of the students to the tables. She greeted one of the professors, said she'd be back shortly, and flew to one of the pillars. Even with the banner that covered it, she knew it was there. She pulled it aside to reveal the particular brick she was looking for.

It was a bit damaged from the incident, but what was on it was still legible. Clay Peters, in his own handwriting, and the date he graduated. Very few students got to graduate with their names carved into the stone of the Great Hall, only the best got to permanently leave their mark, and Joy knew this well.

She pressed her fingertips to grooves in the stone, just for a moment. A reminder of the shadow she was living in, and how much brighter she needed to shine in order to escape it.

With that, she flew off again, finding an open spot at a table and setting down her bag to hold a space for her friends. She waved down Jordan and Atlas when she saw them, using just a bit of magic to make her wings glow so they could pick her out easily.

Devan- Late. - Northe Northe (Keefe) EmilySmith EmilySmith (CJ)

"Thanks..." He huffed out something between a sigh and a chuckle. "I probably would've been fine, I'm tough! But thanks anyway."

It was only then that he noticed just how behind the three of them were, and how if they didn't hurry, they'd be late. He cursed and tried to wriggle out of Keefe's grasp
