Vitals

Age: 41

Race: Human

Affiliation: Venus, loyal to UEF

Gender: Male

Sexuality: Heterosexual

Theme Song: Mombasa Suite

Appearance: At approximately 195 cm in height, Aidan is an imposing man, like most native Venusians. Grey, searching, too-wide eyes stare out from behind specially crafted partially tinted glasses. His expression is almost always intense, focused, even strained to the point of being painful; only in sleep does he ever seem to truly be able to relax. Likewise, his entire body language hints at an almost pathological desire for precision in all movements, from the broadest of gestures to the tiniest of twitches. Only the dark circles under his eyes and his occasional lapses of attention hint at Aidan's perpetual exhaustion.

Birthplace: Eros-II, Venus (one of four farming communes located beneath Aphrodite)

Profession: Near-Orbit Traffic Controller-in-Chief (former UEF Medic)

Psionics or Cybernetics: A misuse of his talent led to Aidan's psionic abilities turning inwards, significantly increasing his control over himself at the price of losing all other psionic capabilities. His highly-parallelized mind is capable of simultaneously performing multiple independent tasks with negligible penalties to his concentration. When used in conjunction with his keen sense of observation, he is a peerlessly perspicacious person, capable of deducing much from very little. Likewise, he has a degree of control over his own movements outmatched only by cyborgs.

These abilities come at a high cost to Aidan. He is constantly tired as he is always using all of his abilities to the fullest, being incapable of switching off. It is not rare for him to sleep over half-a-day to recuperate, and even then he is occasionally prone to sudden bouts of narcolepsy or distraction. Difficult or strenuous situations give him head-splitting but mercifully short-lived migraines.

Equipment:
  • Datapad: The modern man's omni-tool, Aidan's datapad is as vital to him as his eyes. A burning need for information that is accurate up to the second makes this small, somewhat antiquated but reliable tablet invaluable to him.
  • Medikit (possibly): While he is nowadays very unlikely to be carrying the tools from his days as a practitioner, he hasn't thrown them away and can always acquire new ones if needed.

Character Skills/Flaws
Character Skills:
  • [M] Medic - Can treat combat injuries in tense situations, with the proper equipment.
  • [m] Administrator - Excels at organizing and coordinating group efforts thanks to years of experience and his psionic abilities.

Character Flaws:
  • Exhaustion - The candle that burns twice as bright. Since he is constantly operating near the very peak of his abilities, any unexpected exertion can shut him down without warning. A sufficiently challenging fight could knock him out cold, while less difficult but still strenuous activities will leave him sleepy and distracted.
  • Tunnel Vision - His ability to focus on a few very specific things means it is very easy for him to miss the bigger picture.
  • Not a Warrior - While Aidan has some basic combat training from his time in the army, he never put it to use and has forgotten most of it by now. As such, he is not proficient with any weaponry, and is more likely to dodge and flee in any combat situation.
  • Weakened Awareness - If Aidan is not focusing on something, it is much more likely to escape his passive awareness.
  • Terrible Memory - Aidan's heightened awareness requires that much more brain capacity be allocated to processing real-time information. As such, he is very quick to forget all but the most important details of his life.
  • Maniacal Tendencies - A constant drive for perfection can easily lead Aidan astray. He has been known to spend almost an hour undoing and redoing his shoe laces, in an attempt to achieve an optimal setup (he succeeded in the end).

Known Associates:
  • The Board of Executives: The de facto rulers of Venus, made of representatives from the major corporations which first colonized the planet. Aidan isn't familiar with all of them, but would know at least one or two. (Note: I wasn't clear on who the rulers of Venus are, so I made something up; if this isn't permissible, I can change it)
Personality
Fears:
  • Letting People Down - A high opinion of himself makes Aidan believe it is his moral duty to assist others. As such, he applies extremely high standards to himself and is terrified of not being up to a task.
  • Falling Asleep - There have been a few times when he unexpectedly fell asleep during critical moments, and he does not wish to repeat those experiences.

Optimism vs. Pessimism: Leans more towards optimism, if only because he believes anything can be achieved with sufficient willpower and information - especially when he is involved.

Introvert vs. Extrovert: Information is a one-way street for Aidan. While he is very extroverted in the sense that he is constantly seeking out people and engaging in conversation with them, he is unlikely to share much information about himself or about his reasoning.

Justice vs. Mercy: The high standards he applies to himself must apply to everybody else. Consequently, he has a strong sense of justice.

Feelings on the Union: Aidan is loyal towards Venus first, but believes its success is tied to Earth's continued support. He harbors no ill will towards the planet or the Union, so long as they are willing to trade fairly with Venus.

Common Mannerisms: The passion with which Aidan focuses on a task is inversely proportional to the emotion he displays. While many take this to mean he is an unfeeling man, it is anything but - on the contrary, emotion drives many of his actions. It is an unfortunate side effect of the control he exerts over his own facial features that he seems the least interested when he is the most motivated.

Interests & Hobbies: A long sleep cycle and a demanding job leave little room for hobbies, but what little free time he has is often spent enjoying classic movies or playing high-precision simulation games.

Overall Personality: Aidan often dominates any room he is standing in through the unmatched intensity of his words and actions. When he addresses someone, it is not uncommon for that person to feel like they are the only thing in the world which matters to him. His constantly-shifting, scrutinizing, wide-eyed gaze seems to take in everything about his interlocutor; only his glasses serve to mitigate this effect.

Otherwise, Aidan's personality is dominated by a desire to do things the right way. He genuinely considers himself to have a moral obligation to help other, less efficient people, but doesn't let his low esteem of others get in the way of friendliness. In fact, when not intensely focused on a task, Aidan is a very warm and enthusiastic person, so long as interesting conversation is a possibility; small talk is not his forte.
History
History: Despite several attempts to track down his ancestry, Aidan isn't entirely sure of his origins. Records going back further than the second wave of Venus settlers are almost entirely unavailable. His best guess is that he is descended from some of the initial factory workers brought over when mankind first attempted to settle the planet.

Born in Eros-II to agricultural engineers, superb academic results assured Aidan a ticket to one of the best universities of Aphrodite where he studied to become a doctor. Having graduated with honors, he was approached by representatives of the UEF to receive psionic surgery as part of a program to create a better class of field medics. Despite some initial reticence to join the army, he was swayed by the prospect of being a psion and accepted the offer.

The surgery went without complications, his mind having been able to withstand the initial trauma. Foremost among the abilities he gained was the ability to sense the pain of nearby people and to de-activate it, allowing him to locate injured soldiers on the battlefield and perform operations which would normally be extremely painful to the patient. After some promising initial results, he was sent to Earth to put his abilities to good use. Two years passed, during which he acquired a certain reverence among the troops for his abilities and his dedication.

Then, something went wrong. Aidan's memories of the event are fuzzy, but he has been able to piece together that he over-exerted himself at some point. The knockback interfered with the surgeries he had received and stripped him of his abilities, rewiring his brain in the process. When he woke up, it was like discovering the world for the first time. Previously subtle connections between events leaped at him, bright as day. Motivations and reasons became transparent to him. He felt like he was living ten times more than he had before, and relished in it.

The downsides soon became apparent too. He was quickly judged unfit for military service, and honorably discharged. Upon returning to Venus, an initial attempt to become a general practitioner didn't last very long. The work was uninspiring, and he felt his talents were wasted on such a small scale. It was a few months before he first considered a career as a public servant, but the more he thought about it the more it appealed to him. The idea of effecting planet-wide change was attractive, when so much of Venusian society was still dysfunctional after all this time.

He started as a low-level data technician, sifting through the huge influxes of information to find what was truly relevant. From thereon, his rise was meteoric, as he gained a reputation for unrelenting efficiency and high throughput. He went on to various managerial positions, and while the work was much more stimulating than before, his eyes were forever set on the optimization of ever-greater and more complex systems.

Four years ago he requested a transfer to traffic controller, which surprised his superiors as it was considered a downgrade from his current position, but it made perfect sense to Aidan. Near-orbit traffic was a complicated affair, and while sophisticated computer algorithms had been developed to handle it well, he believed there was room for further improvement. Under his guidance, his lanes became the fastest on Venus, thanks to detailed, self-correcting route plans made months in advance. Two years later, he had been promoted to Controller-in-Chief and became responsible for the oversight of all incoming and outgoing traffic from Venus.

The planet is currently going through a renewed economic boom, and Aidan likes to think his management skills played a part. He has never been happier, but now that the problem of traffic is solved, he is looking for his next challenge.
